"Which door?" Lili asked, deciding to let Mabel lead.
Mabel walked forward, opening one of the doors in the upper hallway. The door led to a bedroom, and the sickly smell of old people drafted up to Mabel's nose. Seeing nothing of great interest, Mabel closed the door.
She walked to the next door and grasped the doorknob.
Voices filled the young girl's head. She recognized a few of the voices such as Neil's and Dipper's but most of them were lost on her. Struggling, she tried to focus in on the other voices.
"Mabel!"
"Maybe that old guy was crazy after all…"
"Yeah, but he's a jerk with tight pants and a guitar. I need to keep him away from Wendy at all costs."
"Shar-ing?"
"Well, well, well, someone's looking desperate!"
"You have to trust me!"
"How bout the Mystery kids?"
Lili's hand on her shoulder snapped Mabel out of her daze. Mabel smiled at her friend and turned the doorknob.
The two girls looked inside to find a bedroom with two twin sized beds. Sticky notes, papers, books, and chewed pens laid scattered around the left side of the room. Charts and posters about supernatural creatures covered the walls. Although there was a bunch of stuff laying around, it was an organized mess.
The right side of the room was cleaner. The bed was covered in pink sheets with stuffed animals decorating the top. Different sweaters lay next to the bed, along with a pair of knitting needles. In the center of the room was a desk with two unlabeled red books, a scrapbook, and an open book about mythical creatures.
Lili stepped into the room. "Not the way I would decorate my room if I had the choice, but it works okay."
Lili walked over to the sweaters, looking at each of the designs. After finding nothing interesting she turned back to see Mabel staring at the bedroom, tears running down her cheeks.
"It's just like how we would have decorated it." Mabel said, crying again. Slowly she stepped into the room, taking in her forgotten bedroom. She lunged for the scrapbook before Lili had time to react.
Mabel opened the book to find pictures of her and her brother staring back at her. Flipping through the pages, she saw photographs of the two of them. According to the scrap book they had fought gnomes, gone to petting zoos, and Dipper had apparently kissed a merman at one point. There were pictures of a red haired girl, a guy with a question mark shirt, and two almost identical old people hugging each other.
"You and your brother look close." Lili said over Mabel's shoulder.
Mabel nodded, turning to the last page. The top of the page was labeled new friends. A single picture lay on the page. In the photograph was a picture of their new – or rather old – companions. In addition, a small girl with black clothes and hair was drawn on the picture between Norman and Neil.
"He's hot," Lili said under her breath, staring at one of the boys in the picture.
"Who?"
Lili blushed. "I said that out loud?"
Mabel nodded feverishly.
Lili sighed.
"Show me, show me!" Mabel urged.
Lili shrugged. "I guess it wouldn't do any harm to tell you…." She trailed off and pointed at the boy with red goggles on his head.
Mabel squealed when she saw the boy Lili was pointing to. Already she could picture the two of them going on picnics and eventually getting married. Mabel pulled Lili out of the room and went into perfect match mode, talking about how they could get the two of them together.
"We all knew each other at one point, there's no doubt one of us knows who he is! We just have to find him and I could get you two together in no time. He and my brother are the only ones still missing, right? Maybe they're together!"
"Mabel stop!" Lili yelled, yanking her hand away. "I just think he looks cool, nothing else. He could be a really obnoxious guy for all we know. Besides, we don't know who he is or even if he's still here. He could have gotten kidnapped with the rest of the town's people for all we know."
Lili frowned when she looked back at her friend, who had stopped walking.
Sighing, Lili walked past the girl and headed down the stairs. Mabel grinned as she passed.
Just wait, Lili, you will have your boyfriend or my name isn't Mabel.
Raz sneezed.
"Coming down with a cold?" Dipper asked jokingly as the two of them walked down across the parking lot. Up ahead was the Gravity Falls Mall.
"Nah, I'm too cool for that."
Dipper rolled his eyes as the two of them walked through the automatic doors. Dipper immediately noticed that something was wrong. The Mall, which normally would have some shoppers, even on a slow day, was empty of all life. Various stores looked like fights had happened nearby. The Build-a-Beaver store had a broken window.
"Let's see where can we find some food," Raz said, not paying attention to the lack of people. "Oh, that place look promising!" He said as he spotted Hoo-Ha Owl's Pizzamatronic Jamboree.
"Raz, wait, we shouldn't split up!" Dipper cried as the boy disappeared into the restaurant.
"Great, just great." Dipper said with a sigh.
Dipper walked toward the pizza place only to stop before entering. For some reason this creepy store filled him with dread. Images flashed in his mind too fast for him to make out. Raz is in there. He might need help. Are you so scared that you can't help your new friend? Dipper closed his eyes. He just need to take one more step, to be brave just like his sister.
"I got the pizza" Raz yelled, holding a pizza box over his head. "It's a little cold but it should be fine."
Dipper shook his head, willing the fear away.
"That's fine. Was there anything in there?" Dipper asked.
"Just some pizza boxes and playground. I can see why they aren't doing well– the place is a mess." Raz answered, bringing the pizza over to the food court tables.
"So, what now?" Raz asked as he opened the box and took a slice.
"I thought there would be some people here who would help us get home, but…." He trailed off, gesturing to the mall.
"So? We just need to find the people and they can help us … we could be like secret agents! Just imagine: Raz and Dipper in the Case of the Ghost Town." Raz said excitedly, waving his free hand for dramatic effect.
"Uh…."
"We could even use that book to record our adventure!"
Dipper pulled out the book. He had only read a fourth of it but already he wished he could be like the fictional scientist the book was written by.
"It sounds crazy Raz, but yeah, why not?" Dipper chuckled.
"Yes!" Raz fist pumped. "Okay, Agent Dipper, where to first?"
Dipper's answer was cut off by a large boom noise that echoed through the empty mall. Small dings of rain drops against the windows followed after.
The two boys looked outside to see another storm had hit the town.
"Well, I guess we stay here. We should probably get some supplies anyways." Dipper said, leaving the table.
"Like what?"
"Great, just great." Coraline said, glaring at the raindrops hitting the window. "We finally get a clue and we can't do anything about it!"
Mabel looked at the scrapbook she had retrieved. She had hoped that by showing it to everyone they would be happy. However with the new downpour stopping them, everyone just fell back into their depressed states.
"Do you think there's another book?" Wybie asked, grabbing the book and flipping through the pages.
Mabel perked up. Of course! I make new scrapbooks every chance I get. There must be another book around here somewhere.
"Does it matter? We already checked the house and there's not much else here. The only place it could be is–" Coraline gestured to the rain.
"We won't have any idea where to look anyways." Norman added.
"So we're stuck here?" Wybie asked.
"Yeah, genius. We're stuck here with nothing to do." Coraline rolled her eyes.
"We could watch movies." Neil said.
"Movies!" Mabel echoed, the idea interrupting her thoughts. Happy to have a way to distract everyone, she raced to the TV room with Neil on her heels.
"Can we at least try to be adults?" Coraline shouted.
"It's not like we could go out there anyways. The golf cart would only get stuck in the mud." Norman said.
"Whatever. Can the rest of you at least try to make yourselves useful until this thing blows over?" Coraline snapped. She did not look back as she left the room.
"Well, that was helpful." Lili said after Coraline left ear shot. "What are we supposed to do?"
Wybie got up out of his seat. As he left the room, Norman and Lili heard him muttering about building something.
Norman glanced at Lili. "So... you're a psychic?" He asked cautiously.
"If you are just going to quiz me about what I can do I'm leaving." Lili said, not bothering to glance at the spiky haired boy.
"No, it's not that … it's just." Norman rubbed his shoulder. He never had to tell anyone about his powers before. Everyone in his home town knew that he had had them for the longest time or at the very least thought he was insane. Now he had to tell someone who probably thought he was just another normal kid about his powers.
'But if I tell her maybe she can help me.' He thought to himself.
"Help you with what?" Lili asked, having heard the boy's last thoughts.
Norman jumped. "Ah … I just … I was wondering if you can see ghosts?" Norman blurted out.
Lili glared at Norman. "Look, I get that my powers seem cool, but no, I can't speak to the dead. So you are just going to find someone else to talk to your dead grandma."
"I wasn't making fun of you." Norman muttered, looking down. "I was wondering if you were like me."
Lili paused, taking in what Norman just shared. "Sorry. I can be a bit hot-headed at times. I can't remember anyone else who can see ghosts. If you want, I know a few people who would be happy to help."
Norman shook his head. He looked at her and smiled. "Thanks, but I think I'm good."
Lili held out her hand. "Fine, but if you ever need help just ask."
Norman shook Lili's hand.
Still alive after... it's really been a while since I posted. On a better note I am hoping to release more chapters over this summer but it may be slow going.
I don't own anything but the story line.
This fic is beta read by Ensignily.
