Chapter 5: Chosen

Was this really happening? Was a sister really about to kill her brother for a disagreement? Was this truly the shadows? Was this truly the way of the Na'vi? How could any of this even be real? She couldn't comprehend it. Every clan she had met had been so loving, loyal to one another and anyone who may pass through them. Every clan had a special connection to Eywa but nothing like this. Her biggest question right now though, was why was Kauri risking his own life for someone he had just met? As much as she disliked him, he had saved her or at least protected her, she only had to return the favor.

She saw the knife being lifted to the sky and it was at that moment that Hanoa had loosened her grip on Tuk's hair which was a perfect opportunity. Tuk hissed as Kauri accepted his fate. Getting out of her grip, she had tackled Hanoa to the floor, knocking the knife out of her hand, holding her own against her throat. "You will never be true Na'vi." Tuk hissed.

Hanoa hissed back before grabbing her and defending herself. The girls got into a vicious cat fight as the clan began getting riled up. Kauri swallowed hard and Manaaki did his very best to calm the people, but he was no true leader. The people feared him, they did not worship him. That's all this clan was run off - fear.

Hanoa had Tuk in a hold that was difficult to get out of and she knew that she would have to get in touch her human like skills that Jake had taught her, fighting like Na'vi right now was no use because Hanoa was not ready to give in and she wouldn't until Tuk was no longer breathing. Letting out a gasp, she elbowed Hanoa's stomach strongly, causing it to knock the wind out of her body and allowed Tuk to get out of her grasp. "We have to go." Kauri told her, running up to her.

"How? Where?" Tuk asked, looking around. Kauri swallowed hard, riots were about to happen within the cave and it was not good. Before he could even say anything, Hanoa had come back up to Tuk, slicing her shoulder with her knife. "Argh!" Tuk yelled out in pain, before turning to defend herself once more. As the women once more fought on the ground, Kauri trying to pull them apart, Tuk finally got the upper hand and ensured that Hanoa would get back up again, at least within enough time for them to escape.

"Come on." Kauri told her, grabbing her hand and leading her through the people. Running through the people and out of the cave.

"My people!" Manaaki called out. "We must bring them back! Do not let them leave!" He yelled as they all war called, grabbing their bows and arrows chasing them.

Tuk heard it all and felt sick to her stomach, how could there be so much evil on such a beautiful planet.

"You good?" Kauri asked her knowing she was bleeding badly.

"I'm fine. We need to go." She told him. "My Ikran." She whispered out, calling for Pele. As they continued to run through the darkness, she held onto his hand tightly so she did not lose her way as she struggled to see. She could see the light approaching closer and closer, she could hear Pele calling for her, she could feel that Pele was concerned for her. Calling to her Ikran once more, they finally reached the entrance to the cave.

"Climb on!" Tuk told him as she instantly connected to Pele and climbed on, Kauri right behind her. Pele flew immediately but the Kutawato had caught up and were now firing their bows and arrows at them, their spears. "Calm Pele, remain calm." She soothed her Ikran as they flew further and further away yet still dodging the weapons.

They eventually found a safe place to land and Tuk, leaned against the wall slightly. She was so exhausted. "I should kill you for this." She mumbled to him. Pele rubbed her head against Tuk's neck with concern for her rider.

"I told you. I am not what they are. I never have been. I want to stop this, I want it to change." Kauri told her softly.

"You can do that yourself. I am returning home." She told him. Kauri just swallowed hard and chose to not respond to it.

"You are hurt." He told her.

"I am fine."

"Allow me to help you."

"I said I am fine." Tuk spat.

"Curse your stubbornness." he said simply. "Now sit down so I can help you." Tuk just rolled her eyes and finally gave in, sitting down.

As he was cleaning her, Tuk swallowed hard. He was so gentle. "All this for a meal." She said with a slight chuckle.

"I am sorry. I shouldn't have dragged you into this. It is not yours to fix." He told her softly, attending to her wound with the natural flora and medicines surrounding them. Tuk swallowed hard and just looked ahead of her.

"It is done." She told him softly.

"They will come after us, you know. This isn't the end." He told her truthfully.

"I know." She said simply. "The sun will be rising shortly." She added, concerned for his eyes.

"I will be alright." Kauri reassured her.

"You can lose your vision." She told him, turning to face him in concern. Kauri looked at her and swallowed hard.

"I'd rather my vision than lose myself," he said softly. Tuk looked at him and swallowed hard, she was now understanding how bad this truly was for him.

"How did she die? Your mother?" She asked softly. Kauri swallowed hard, he hated talking about it because his mother was his best friend.

"She was poisoned." he told her softly. "By a member of the Kutawato, he had found out of my mothers plans to change the ways of the people. My father ordered his execution, from that moment on I knew I couldn't continue what she had started, it was too dangerous." he said softly, sadly. "I had to pretend to agree with the way in which they chose to live and every day it killed me. Every day I lost more of myself. I may as well have been dead." he told her honestly. For the first time since meeting him, Tuk felt sorry for him, felt he was different and felt he had a soul.

"I am so sorry.." She whispered, moving her hand to his arm.

"It was a long time ago." He said softly, shaking it off.

"I lost someone a long time ago too."

"Who?"

"My big brother." She said softly. "He was my best friend. I was only 8 at the time. The sky people took him away from me." She said, feeling her throat tighten at the thought of Neteyam and the anger she had towards them.

"What happened to them?" He asked curiously.

"They killed their home, they tried to do the same here but my parents, they fought so bravely, fought for our people. I almost lost my father too but they never gave up and eventually we won." She told him.

"Well I can see where you get your strength from." Kauri replied with a small smile, before Tuk nodded and turned back to fix her wound.

"Thank you…" Was all she said softly.

Why all of a sudden did she feel so different towards him? It was almost as if the cave was flooding her with negative feelings, she felt like she had lost herself within the cave, but now…now she was back in the open, in the fresh air, in the light, she felt like herself again, like she had been found and she could see his heart, his soul. She was so confused but she knew something had to be done. She knew she couldn't do this alone, she needed her family. Something had to change.

After all, Eywa chose her, right? Like she had chosen her father all those years ago.
