Phoebe - JUNE
"Good thing you're here." Piper said as soon as Paige walked through the doors of P3. "This one," She said and pointed at Phoebe "is leaving soon, so I'm really going to need your help." The two sisters were surrounded by brightly coloured themed decorations, most of which still had to be put up.
Phoebe scoffed and let a cardboard box drop to the floor. "Sure, let's pretend that I haven't been here helping you for the last three hours." She walked through the mess on the floor and sat heavily on a bar chair.
Next to her, Paige sat down as well, placing a familiar looking box on the counter. "Good thing I decided to bring these then, hmm?" She said and opened the lid to reveal delicious looking donuts, just the smell of them alone lifted Phoebe's spirits. Abandoning her work as well, Piper snatched the one Phoebe had been reaching for and leaned on the counter next to her sisters to eat it.
"Why are you putting all of this up now anyway? You're not hosting the party until Saturday, right?" Paige asked while stuffing her mouth with a chocolate glazed donut.
"No, but tomorrow is that teacher-parent thing and Friday we're taking the boys to the zoo, so I only have time to do this now." Piper said and removed a pack of candles from the chair next to Paige, so she could sit down as well.
"How did your date go with Henry yesterday?"
Their younger sister's face lit up at the mention of her boyfriend, "Really well! We went to this Italian restaurant…" Paige continued.
Phoebe felt a little behind, she hadn't even heard about their date. Actually, she hadn't talked to Paige about Henry in a long time, although, from what she heard, it seemed as if they were getting quite serious. Keeping up with Paige's love life, was becoming less of a priority when her own was so infinitely more interesting to her.
The sound of her phone ringing ended her musings, and she shifted through her handbag for a couple of seconds before she got her hands on it. Seeing that it was Billie calling, she quickly got out of her chair and moved away from her sisters, who looked at her back curiously.
"Hey sweetie, what's up?"
She could barely make out Billie's reply, there were so many other people talking and laughing in the background. "Billie? I can't hear you, it's too loud. Did you forget something?" Behind her Piper asked Paige another question about Henry which continued their conversation.
The sound coming from her phone grew muffled, and then suddenly there was a lot less background noise, as if Billie had gone into another room.
"I did it! I'm done!" The blonde's voice came through loud and clear,
Confused, Phoebe took a look at the clock behind the bar. "It's only a little over ten, I thought you said you weren't going in until eleven. I was going to be there when you got out."
"Someone called in sick, and another never even showed up. So they asked me if I wanted to go in earlier, and yeah. By the way, umm, you're dating a genius! I got an A!" Her voice was so excited; Phoebe could imagine the huge smile on her face.
"You did? Honey that's amazing, I'm so proud of you!" She said, momentarily having forgotten her sisters were in earshot of everything she said. Behind her, Paige raised her eyebrows and looked questioningly at Piper who quickly turned back to her decorations pretending to be busy with them.
"I'm gonna come pick you up." Phoebe promised, "I'll be there in ten minutes tops, okay? See ya, bye." Holding her phone against her chest she couldn't help smiling, she was so happy for Billie and couldn't wait to see her.
"Uhh, who was that?" Her younger sister asked curiously.
Phoebe turned around quickly and grabbed her car keys and jacket. "Oh, ehh, that was… a, friend. Yes, one of my friends." Giving both Piper and Paige quick hugs, she hurried towards the door.
"Where are you going?" Paige continued, but her sister had already disappeared out the door.
With her last exam over and done with, Phoebe was taking Billie out for dinner to celebrate. She was currently parked outside her dorm waiting for the younger woman to appear, when the passenger door was suddenly opened and the blonde climbed inside. "Hey" Phoebe said, leaning over about to give Billie a kiss on the cheek, Billie surprised her however, by putting both hands under her face and pulling her in for a deep kiss.
They pulled away a few seconds later, both slightly breathless. "I've waited to do that all day". Billie said sounding mildly embarrassed.
Phoebe smiled, "I'm happy you did." She held out her right hand and felt her stomach twitching happily when the other woman immediately grasped hers. "So, where to?"
A couple of hours later in the late afternoon, after having had both dinner and coffee, Phoebe had not wanted their day to end just yet and invited the blonde to see her apartment which she had agreed on. As they walked to her car with their hands clasped, they noticed an older lady turning her head to look after them as they passed her, making Phoebe look nervously between the two of them.
"How… How out are we?" She asked once they were both inside her car.
Billie gave her a careful smile and took a deep breath, "Well… I've never really told anybody about me being into both men and women. But I don't really care if random people on the street, or my classmates find out, I can't imagine any of my friends having a problem with it." She looked down and picked at a loose thread on her pants, "My parents however, I don't really know what they would say. I mean, I don't think they'd disown me or anything, but it's not like they would be thrilled."
Phoebe reached over and grabbed her hand, stopping her fidgeting and making her look up.
"What about you?"
The witch smiled, "I told my sister Piper about you."
Billie looked up quickly in surprise, "You did".
Nodding, Phoebe started the car and pulled out of their parking spot, "I did yeah, and she's happy that I'm happy, but she's also known for a while that I've gone… both ways before. Paige is uhm… Well I haven't told her, but I don't think she'd mind, honestly she'd probably just be upset to know I told Piper before her." They both laughed.
"So you won't mind if I kiss you in the middle of the street?" Phoebe asked, referring to her question about how out they were.
"Not at all."
Did I leave any clothes on the floor before I left this morning? Phoebe thought to herself as she unlocked her front door to let herself and Billie inside her apartment.
She swung the door open and gestured for the blond to enter, "Welcome to my humble abode" she said formally making Billie laugh. Phoebe had just closed the door behind them, when she heard a voice coming from her living room, that she did not expect at all.
"Phoebe? Finally, I've been here for more than an hour, why weren't you answering your phone?" The sound of her older sister's voice drifting closer to the two of them, made Phoebe freeze in the middle of her walk and she hurriedly turned to her date. "I'm sorry, I really did not plan this," she whispered giving the blonde an apologetic smile.
Your sister? Billie mouthed and received a tight lipped Yes in response before the witch entered her living room to see her older sister in the middle of it.
"Piper, what are you doing here?" She asked, with Billie trailing slowly into the room behind her.
Piper started talking without really looking up, "Paige brought me here after we finished at the club, honestly Pheebs you really have to tell her about-". Piper's disapproving expression turned into a surprised one when she finally noticed the younger woman behind her sister. "Oh! Hi, you must be Billie?" She said offering her hand, Phoebe was happy to notice that she sounded slightly embarrassed at having obviously interrupted their day.
Billie stepped forward shaking hands with the eldest Halliwell, "I am yes, and you must be…"
"Piper!" Phoebe exclaimed stepping forward to introduce the two of them. "This is Piper, yes. My older sister."
Piper narrowed her eyes at the use of the word older, "I'm not really that much older," she mumbled but gave her sister's date a warm smile. "Billie, I'm happy to meet you, Phoebe's been telling me a lot about you."
A blush crept up the younger woman's cheeks and she shot a quick glance in Phoebe's direction, "I've heard a lot about you guys as well."
Phoebe, feeling slightly annoyed by her sister just showing up and accidentally merging her love-life with her family-life, turned to the other witch, "Piper how did you even get here?"
"Paige… umm, dropped me off." She said shortly, sending Phoebe a knowing look.
The silence that followed was awkward and Billie shifted her footing a couple of times before turning to Phoebe, "You know, if you guys want to talk I can just go…-"
"No!" Both Phoebe and Piper interrupted, startling the younger woman slightly.
"Billie I just came to talk some sense into this one," Piper explained and gestured to her younger sister, "but I can do that another day." She turned towards the front door, but then quickly turned back around, "Billie, if you want, I would love to invite you to come have dinner at our house this weekend. Our other sister Paige, her boyfriend's coming over as well, so you wouldn't be the only new face."
Billie was a little stunned but happy for the offer, "Thanks Piper, I would love that, but I'm actually going to my parents this weekend". Phoebe silently breathed out a sigh of relief; she wasn't sure she was ready to share the blonde with the rest of her family just yet.
"Oh that's alright!" Piper said, "How about the weekend after? You guys can think about it together, alright?"
"Well, I don't want to steal anymore of your time," Piper continued, "Pheebs, we can talk later. Although I really think you need to talk to Paige, she's been asking me a lot of questions that's not really for me to answer." Sending her younger sister a meaningful look, the eldest Halliwell turned to Billie, "Billie it was really nice to meet you, and you think about having dinner with us alright? See you Pheebs!".
As quickly as she had suddenly intruded on their time together, Piper was out the door in a hurry.
For a moment the two of them just stood there looking at the spot Piper had vacated, then to Phoebe's surprise Billie let out a short laugh, "Wow, not only do I get to see your apartment, but I also got to meet one of your sisters all in one day, how's that for some progress?"
Phoebe laughed and threw her arm around the younger woman's shoulders, "Come on, let me give you the grand tour."
After having given the blonde a quick tour of her home, the two of them settled on the couch, sitting close enough that their legs were almost touching.
"So, you're going to your parents this weekend?" Phoebe asked, sounding somewhat surprised at what Billie had told her sister earlier.
The blonde looked at her apologetically, and the witch immediately regretted her tone of voice. "I should have told you earlier, sorry." She explained and squeezed the older woman's hand. "I usually spend some time with them every summer, but when they asked a couple of weeks ago, I initially turned them down… I love them, I really do, but… I always leave them feeling sad and depressed."
"But you're going anyway?" Phoebe prompted, when the younger woman fell silent. She had an idea about why being with her parents made Billie sad, but she didn't want to push her into talking about something that was obviously a sore subject to her.
"Yeah," She continued, "my dad called me yesterday. They almost never do." She added and gave the witch a quick look, before her gaze fell to their joined hands again. "He said my mom was really sad that I wasn't coming, and that umm, that he was too. Which basically broke my heart, so now I'm going anyway I guess."
"But then you'll be sad." Phoebe stated, caressing the back of the blonde's hand with her thumb.
Billie only shrugged in response. After a few seconds, she rearranged herself on the couch and ended up leaning her head against Phoebe's shoulder, "Is this okay?"
The witch's pulse quickened at their closeness – being this close she could smell the faint scent of Billie's shampoo.
"It's more than okay." She responded softly.
They sat in comfortable silence, with the window open, Phoebe could hear the traffic from the streets below.
"They still live in our house." Billie said softly after a couple of minutes in silence. "Our old house," she explained "the one we lived in when everything happened … I hate being there and I hate the fact that they still live there. It's like they're living at the scene of a crime … which I guess they literally are huh?"
"Why don't they move?" Phoebe thought out loud.
"Despite all the years that have passed, they still think she's alive. They still hope that she'll come back some day. That's why they won't move, they hope the doorbell will ring one day, and that they'll open it to find her on the other side."
"Do you think…" Phoebe started, almost afraid to ask, not wanting to upset the blonde, but at the same time not able to let the thought go, "Do you think she's still alive?"
The living room grew silent - it was as if her question had dimmed even the noise of the streets below them. Billie straightened herself on the couch, removing herself from the other woman and Phoebe was just about to apologize, thinking that she had crossed the line when the blonde answered her question.
"No." She said sharply, turning her head to look Phoebe in the eyes. "In fact… I hope she's not." She admitted softly.
Phoebe was slightly shocked by the admission, it wasn't at all the answer she thought she would get.
"I can't afford to think about all the horrible things she would have gone through had she still been alive. All the cruel things she could be experiencing right now while we sit here." Her eyes grew glossy while she explained her answer to the other woman. "It would literally kill me to know that she is alive right now, in some horrible place, while I'm living my life, going to school, falling in love, doing all the things she will never do."
The older woman's heart skipped a beat at the admission Billie seemingly hadn't even noticed she'd made, and she gripped the younger woman's hands in both her own.
"That's not even the worst." Billie said, misreading Phoebe's surprised expression. She wiped away the tears that spilled over, but let her hands be pulled back into Phoebe's again.
"When I was thirteen, police found the body of a child buried in a field a couple of miles away from our town. At that point, things had died down. People didn't avoid us like the plague anymore, I made friends again, my parents were trying to actually live. But when that body was found… It was like back when Christy was taken all over again. People would go to extreme lengths to avoid us, God my teacher couldn't even look me in the eye while the investigation was going on!" Billie cried, burying her face in the crook of her elbow.
Phoebe felt horrible, she couldn't imagine what the uncertainty of never knowing what happened to someone you loved felt like, and she wouldn't wish that kind of pain Billie had gone through on even her worst enemy.
"Come here honey." She whispered, enveloping the blonde in a hug, leaning them both against the back of the couch. After a while, when Billie had calmed down a little, she spoke into the crook of Phoebe's neck. "It wasn't even her body – it was some boy who'd died almost twenty years earlier."
"And you know what? I remember wishing it had been her. Because at least then we would have known. Then it would have finally ended." She said softly, breaking Phoebe's heart a little with every word. "God, how horrible is that?" She asked and released herself from the comforting embrace.
"Hey," Phoebe whispered, reaching up with her left hand to wipe away a stray tear, "I get it. You're not horrible Billie, I think it's only natural to want closure."
Beside her, the blonde took a deep breath and gave her a teary smile.
"Wow, I really set the mood for our evening huh?" Billie stated after a moment and released a short laugh.
Phoebe smiled carefully and leaned over to place a soft kiss on the other woman's lips, "I'm happy you feel comfortable enough with me to tell me things like that."
Billie blushed slightly and leaned her head against the back of the couch, "I'm happy you actually want to listen to my sad sob story of a life."
"You know what? I think we need a drink." Phoebe suggested and stood up to go to the kitchen, "Wine?"
"Sure."
When Phoebe returned with a glass of wine for each of them, she found Billie looking at a framed photo sitting on the small table next to the couch.
"Is this Paige?" Billie asked quietly, picking the frame up and holding it out in front of her.
When Phoebe's eyes landed on the object in question, her heart skipped a beat when she realized just what picture the younger woman was holding, and just what person she was pointing to. She didn't know what to say, because the woman smiling from between a younger version of herself and Piper wasn't Paige, it was Prue.
She sat the blonde's glass on the table next to them and took a drink of her own.
"It's not actually, Paige, I mean." She took Billie's right hand in her left and squeezed it. "Since we're in the mood for sad sob stories," she said, mimicking the other woman's earlier words, "I might as well tell you mine."
She could see that she immediately had Billie's full attention, and she set down her glass of wine, and took the outstretched picture frame in her hand instead.
"This is Prue," She explained tilting the picture for Billie to see. "She was my oldest sister and although we disagreed a lot, she was one of my best friends." Phoebe had thought of what she could tell the blonde in advance, so her next words sounded almost completely true. "She died four years ago, in an accident."
"Phoebe I'm so sorry." Billie breathed and leaned forward to pull her into an embrace. When they parted Phoebe continued.
"I didn't tell you earlier because of what you told me about Christy, I didn't want to upset you and bother you with my sad story. But it's not something I wanted to actively keep from you, so I'm glad you asked." She finished and smiled somewhat sadly at the picture in her hand.
"What a sad coincidence." Billie concluded after a while, her expression unreadable to Phoebe "That we've both lost a sister."
A little over an hour later and Phoebe kissed Billie goodbye in her doorway and watched her leave until the elevator doors closed. She looked at the time on her phone, almost 7 pm. They probably just finished eating at the house, she thought to herself. Wanting to talk to Paige, but not really feeling like driving, she chose the lazy option.
"Paige!" She called and waited.
Three seconds later her younger sister appeared in her hallway in a cloud of orbs.
Paige quickly looked around the room before her eyes worriedly fell on Phoebe, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," She laughed, "I just wanted to talk to you, aaaand maybe get ride to the manor?"
Her younger sister rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, "Really? Is that what I am to you? A taxi?"
Phoebe laughed and snuck her arm through one of Paige's, "Of course not honey!" she said reassuringly "You're much faster than a taxi!"
Unable to not crack a smile, her younger sister surrendered, "Alright, fine, hold tight."
Suddenly, the feeling of free falling was all Phoebe felt for a second, but then the firmness of the Halliwell Manor's kitchen floor replaced it just as fast and her older sister Piper materialized in front of her pulling her into a hug.
"So, how was the rest of your day?" Piper asked once she'd released her, sending Phoebe a sly look with one of her eyebrows raised, "I left your place hours ago, did you give her a detailed tour of your bedroom?".
Phoebe's mouth fell open in a scoff, "Piper! I don't like what you're insinuating." She said slowly, not able to keep herself from smiling slightly. Both of them missed the confusion and frustration their younger sister felt at being out of the loop.
"Do you guys know what I don't like? The two of you obviously keeping secrets from me!" Paige exclaimed in a slightly high-pitched voice.
Piper quickly turned towards the door, "You know what? I'm gonna go help Leo wrestle the boys into the bath." She mumbled, throwing Phoebe a quick look on her way out.
Phoebe felt nervous all of a sudden - telling Paige while Piper was in the room had actually felt safe, until her older sister bolted, leaving just her and Paige in the otherwise empty kitchen.
Her gaze unconsciously fell to her feet in the abrupt silence that followed Piper's departure and her throat seemed to dry up at the thought of what she was about to do. It wasn't that she thought Paige would never talk to her again once she told her- in fact she was quite sure that Paige was going to be completely okay with it - knowing her, she would probably just be pissed that Phoebe hadn't told her sooner, and that she was the last to know. But still, Phoebe felt terribly nervous.
"Paige I –"
"Phoebe, if there's –"
Both sisters began talking at the same time, and Phoebe looked up to find her younger sister much closer than she thought, pulling her gently towards the small kitchen table. Once they were both seated, she tried again.
"Paige I'm dating someone." She rasped, clearing her throat.
Her younger sister looked up, confusion written on her face, "That's it? That's you and Piper's secret?"
Phoebe couldn't help to laugh a little at Paige's open-mouthed expression.
"Yeah. Although, it's not really a secret. It's more of a, I-didn't-really-know-how-to-tell-you-kind-of-thing-and-Piper-already-kind-of-knew-thing."
At that, Paige looked if possible, even more confused, "Okaaay?" She said, stretching the word.
Phoebe breathed a quick sigh, closing her eyes briefly before opening them again. She grabbed her sister's hands on the table in her own. "Paige, can I just say a whole lot, without you interrupting me?"
Her younger sister nodded and squeezed her hands in comfort.
Phoebe took a deep breath, "I've never gotten to do this before." She began, her eyes fixed on their clasped hands. "Piper and Prue, they kind of just found out. Well, more like they just walked in on it." She said softly, the memory of her two sisters barging into her room while her hands were busy trying to open the clasp of one of her classmate's bra, was still the most embarrassing things that had ever happened to her.
"I'm dating a woman." She said bluntly, doing her best to keep her eyes on their hands, instead of hyper analyzing Paige's reaction like she really wanted to. "Her name's Billie and she's such a sweet and kind soul and honestly, I'm just really really happy."
"And I wanted to tell you, I really did, I've just never gotten to do that before, and the thought scared me, even though I know you would never think any less of me." Paige squeezed her hands tightly and Phoebe finally looked up to see her younger sister giving her a teary smile.
"You can say something now." She breathed, feeling very close to crying herself.
Paige got up, walked around the table and enveloped her in a tight hug. "I love you," She mumbled into Phoebe's hair, "and there's nothing you could tell me, that would make me love you any less."
Relief coursed through Phoebe's body, and she felt herself relax into her sister's embrace.
A moment later the two disentangled and Phoebe was suddenly attacked by Paige's endless questions – she couldn't stop smiling, she was so happy that Paige was okay with everything, and she looked forward to really talking with her sisters about Billie.
"Is she human?" Paige asked.
"Yes, and no I haven't told her."
Paige cracked a smile, "Of course, hah, could you imagine telling someone you just started dating, yikes."
Phoebe ducked slightly in her seat, "Well, I've actually been seeing her for almost two months." Seeing Paige's expression of disbelief, she hurriedly added; "We weren't dating at first, but that's how long we've known each other."
"Two months?! Phoebe Halliwell, you waited two months to tell me?!"
Oh yes, she was definitely pissed about that.
AN: Did you guys know that they are releasing Charmed on Blu Ray? I'm definitely getting those!
