A/N: So... there seems to have been a glitch last night (guess that happens when you upload ~22 chapters) and a bunch of formatting didn't save as it was supposed to. Then through your reviews, I found out this chapter ended up being a chapter from another story (Something New: a Frozen x RWBY crossover). Thanks for letting me know, and sorry about that. Here's the real chapter... *praying it works this time...*
Previously on Because Why Not?…
Ruby and Weiss's relationship has been strained since the death of Mr. Schnee, and they separate so Weiss can focus on saving the mistreated faunus that work for the SDC. Although they agree to separate, both of them are heartbroken.
After the service, Winter takes Weiss to the company headquarters to start the paperwork to assume control as the new CEO. But after a heart-to-heart, Winter advises her sister against her newly chosen path as she tries to step up to be the sister that Weiss both wants, and needs, even realizing the sacrifice she'd need to make if Weiss was to follow her proposal.
Meanwhile, Ozpin talks to Qrow about the status of the maidens and whether he's brought the graduating hunters and huntresses up to speed on the real situation behind the recent events.
"Thanks again, Winter." Weiss said, as they stood in front of the door to the hotel room Weiss and Ruby had been staying in.
"No problem, just remember what I told you." Winter replied. "I'll have a copy of our contracts sent to your scroll in the morning once the company's lawyers notarize them."
"Goodnight." Weiss said as Winter left her to head back to her own room.
Weiss held the card to the door in her room and slowly opened the door, afraid to face Ruby after the events of the afternoon. She stepped into the dark room and closed the door. She waited a moment for her eyes to adjust, and stepped forward into the room that held two double beds. Only one of them had been used the days they'd stayed there, but now Weiss found herself looking at a pair of freshly made beds with nothing but Weiss's white luggage case sitting at the foot of the farthest one.
Weiss turned to the light switch and switched it on to confirm that Ruby seemed to have left. The thought that Ruby would simply disappear without a proper goodbye sent a wave of nausea through her as for the millionth time, she replayed their conversation in her head.
Winter had helped her realize exactly what path she was choosing to go down, and offered an option to take both at the same time. Weiss had never seen a contract weighted so unfairly in one party's favour before, but Winter had basically forced her into signing an agreement that said Weiss would be free to live as she chooses, and if she one day felt that she'd wish to take over the company, she would be free to relieve Winter of the role at any time. Winter even recommended adding a portion that allowed Weiss to dictate Winter's goals in running the company in her stead and simultaneously retain an advisory position that would fit with a career as a huntress. The only thing missing was Ruby herself.
"Come on, think!" Weiss said to herself, wiping the hot tears that had once more started falling from her eyes. She looked at the room again, the beds were untouched. When she opened the drawers, Ruby's things had been removed, and the bathroom was exactly the same as she'd left it in the morning.
Weiss turned to the door and her eyes widened as she found a piece of paper taped to the back. She tripped over herself as she lunged for the paper, tearing it from the door and landing in the corner as her eyes flew from the top to the bottom, recognizing Ruby's untidy scrawl in an instant. More than that though, Weiss noticed that it was even more messy than usual and words were carelessly crossed out here and there and the ink had run where drops of water had landed. It didn't take genius to know Ruby had been crying when she'd written it.
Weiss,
By the time you read this, I'll probably be waiting to board the last flight to Vale. I would have liked to stay to say goodbye, but this hurts more than I thought it would. If I did stay, I might not have wanted to leave, and that wouldn't be right. I'm a huntress, and you're a CEO now. Our lives will keep us apart even if we want to work things out - words I'm sure you'd say to me if I'd suggested to try. I just want you to know that I'll be okay, and maybe you'll find yourself hiring me to do a job one day. If so, lets get together to catch up.
But I'm getting ahead of myself now. I love you Weiss. You've been my best friend, and the best partner I could have ever had. So good luck in your adventure, and wish me luck in mine.
~Ruby Rose~
Weiss clutched the letter in her hand as a fresh wave of tears burned her eyes. She refused to accept that Ruby would disappear so easily from her life and quickly looked at the time. She only had half an hour to get across the entire city to the airfield before the flight Ruby'd mentioned would depart.
She sprang to her feet, throwing her door open as she grabbed her weapon from the rack next to it. She clipped it onto her belt as she flew down the hall and threw her shoulder into her sister's door.
"Winter!" Weiss yelled as she skidded to a halt with an inch to spare as Winter quickly sheathed her own weapon and pulled a jacket on over her underwear.
"Weiss! What's wrong?" Winter asked as she buttoned her pants back up and motioned for Weiss to walk with her as she quickly left her room and made for the nearest exit, already guessing what had happened. "Ruby left?"
"She's going on the last flight to Vale!" Weiss replied with a desperation she'd never felt before. It was as if her entire life was ending and the only way she could save it would be to get to Ruby before she left. If she did get to Vale… Weiss didn't think she'd be able to find her again as the third year students were permitted to live wherever they chose as their curriculum was primarily mission based.
As if reading her mind, Winter nodded and summoned a giant knight's arm from a glyph, catching her sister by surprise. She looked at Weiss and smiled.
"You weren't the only one to do that test of Father's. But on a more serious note, choose your landing strategy?" Winter asked her sister as she pulled a cartridge of wind dust from her pocket and tossed it to her sister who caught it nodded as she stepped onto the large arm which raised her high into the air and waited as she created a series of glyphs, infusing them with the entire cartridge Winter had given her.
"Wish me luck." Weiss said as she crouched on the hand as Winter took a position as to imitate her summon. She simply nodded and stepped forward, while throwing her arm forward as if she were pitching a baseball.
The giant knight's arm pushed Weiss forward, and Weiss jumped, increasing her speed just as she went through the first glyph, the wind dust activated and propelled her forward at breakneck speed and then she went through the next nine glyphs accelerating to a speed only Ruby might once have ever travelled at as she flew through the air to the airfield, her trajectory surprisingly perfect, even as she lost speed and the clap of air her movement had created caught up with her.
Her skin felt like ice, and her clothing felt as if it were about to rip off entirely, but if it meant catching Ruby, then she no longer cared. She summoned a few glyphs, using the remaining dust in her rapier to add an air cushion to them as she came down at a speed far too fast to survive.
Weiss hit her last glyph and then pavement as she flew toward the security gate where guards took notice of the bundle of white that was rapidly flying toward them.
Weiss summoned glyphs to slide on as she avoided their booth and sped into the airfield. The reports of their weapons only spurred her on as she flew faster and faster to the terminal where she could barely make out the fuel hose being disconnected from the only aircraft set to leave this late in the day.
Weiss felt a bullet graze past her head, a lock of hair falling as she turned to see a man with a rifle aimed at her. She spun her weapon's cylinder, creating a water glyph before hitting it with a fireball to give her a cloud of steam.
She turned back and barely jumped in time to avoid colliding with a luggage truck that was driving back to the storage garage behind her. Weiss watched as the aircraft loomed closer, a man waving light rods was urging the craft to take to the air and Weiss flew the last hundred feet, tackling him and rolling off him as her momentum carried her into one of the landing struts of the craft, sending a jolt of pain through her body.
The man she'd tackled groaned as he stood back up and spoke into his radio. She no longer cared what happened, as long as she was here.
"Alright, drop the weapon and step away from the craft." He said as he transformed his glowing sticks into a pair of shock batons. Weiss had to admit she should have seen something like that coming, so she complied.
"Before you let this craft leave, I need somebody that's on it." Weiss said as she carefully drew her scroll out of her pocket and handed it to the guard. It was open to the contract Ruby had made with her sister. She knew that the very nature of the contract put all the blame on Ruby, and as the owner of it, Weiss could press charges however she saw fit. What Winter had seen that gave her the foresight to transfer it earlier that evening, Weiss felt she'd never know, but she was infinitely thankful for Atlas's jurisdiction laws.
"What's the name?" He asked as he reluctantly pulled out a passenger manifest from the bag he had strapped to his back.
"Ruby Rose." Weiss replied as a small army of guards arrived on three separate open bed trucks. They hopped out and aimed their combat rifles at Weiss who remained where she was with her weapon at her feet and her hands in the air.
The man nodded and whispered with an officer that approached him, pointing to his manifest before the officer swiped his face with his hand.
"Fine. Get her off. You two, help." He barked, pointing to two of his men as he turned back to Weiss. "You, leave the weapon and walk to that truck."
Weiss followed his direction as she watched one of the guards drive the truck with the staircase back to the aircraft. The other guard and the worker with the shock batons boarded and as Weiss neared the rear of the truck the officer had indicated, she heard the shocked cry as Ruby stepped out to a scene Weiss couldn't imagine what she was thinking.
"Ruby!" Weiss called, ignoring the officer ordering her to get into the back of the truck, and taking a step toward Ruby which caused all the guards to raise their weapons again. Weiss stopped but didn't move back to the truck.
"Weiss?" Ruby gasped in surprise, taking the steps two at a time and forcing the guard to run down to keep up with her. He needn't have bothered as the next second there was nothing but a row of rose petals leading up to Weiss who stood one foot away from where Ruby had stopped. "Why are you here? Why'd you stop the flight?"
Weiss could hear the strain in Ruby's voice. The one that meant she'd been crying. The one that meant she might start again at any point. And she knew she would be no better. "Because I'm hoping it's not too late to fix the biggest mistake I've made in my life."
The two stood in silence, ignoring the officer shouting at them and the guards bracing their rifles on their shoulders as they simply stared into each others eyes.
Ruby blinked and Weiss felt herself slam backward onto the ground as Ruby's semblance hit her hard. Ruby's mouth smashed to hers and she quickly reciprocated the kiss as wrapped her arms around her girlfriend, with the hope of never letting go again.
"That's enough! Get in the truck!" The officer shouted as he pulled Ruby up by the arm.
"Hiyaa!" Ruby cried as she spun and punched the man in the throat and flipped him as Weiss got back to her feet. Ruby flipped the officer over and shoved her knee deep into his back before she noticed a great many safeties being clicked off.
Weiss grabbed Ruby as she put her hands up and pulled her off the officer and a few steps back. Quietly, she whispered as she pulled Ruby closer. "We're sort of getting arrested now."
A moment of silence passed before Ruby slowly turned and offered her a slight grin before wiping the look off her face and raising her hands like her girlfriend's.
"So… into the truck, right?" Weiss asked as the very unimpressed guards who all looked down at their officer that was now coughing as he tried to get air back into his lungs.
"Weiss, I'm not complaining about you coming to get me or anything, but…" Ruby hesitated as she tried to find the words she wanted to use. "Why exactly didn't you send me a message on my scroll?"
"I… was afraid you wouldn't answer if I called." Weiss replied as she looked down at her hands. One was rested in her lap as was usual, but the other lay on the bench next to her. Through the thin bars that separated her from Ruby, stretched the younger girls fingers, entwining with her own. "I… I wouldn't have answered if our roles were switched."
"Oh… I guess it was all just as good." Ruby replied with a small laugh. "Yang took my scroll and said if you called, she'd punch you through the speaker."
"I can imagine. What I did… it wasn't right. My thinking wasn't right." Weiss replied with a frown at her hands. "I put my position as CEO ahead of my position as your girlfriend-"
"No, Weiss. You made the right choice." Ruby cut her off simply. Silence stretched between them for a moment before Ruby continued. "As huntresses, we were taught to follow our orders but to be smart enough to know when deviating from them would yield a better result than following them. You chose your company for the right reasons, and I hate to admit it but even though I was crying from the hurt of you leaving, I was happy that you took that path. The SDC needs as much help as it can get to get rid of the reputation your father created."
"So you're saying that coming back was a mistake?" Weiss asked as she turned to look at Ruby who glanced back through the bars before looking down at their entwined fingers.
"I don't mean that. Just… I think… I don't know… I just want to be with you. I can't really explain anything else." Ruby replied as she ran a frustrated hand through her hair.
"It's alright." Weiss replied with a squeeze of her fingers. "I was set on leaving you, and I needed Winter to show me that I was just setting myself up for failure as a CEO. I hate to admit it, but my father was right on one thing."
"What was that?" Ruby asked, turning her head to lean on the bars and look at her girlfriend. Weiss returned the gaze, mirroring Ruby's position before she replied.
"He told me that if I ever had to choose between two things I wanted, then I hadn't worked hard enough to deserve them both." Weiss replied with a wry smile. "If it weren't for Winter, you would have gone back to Vale, and I would have had to take on the entire dust company alone."
"Weiss, I know you weren't close with your family, but why would Winter help now?" Ruby asked gently. "You told me yourself never to make a deal with her if it could be helped."
"And it's a good thing you didn't listen." Weiss replied as Ruby stuck out her tongue. "Otherwise, I couldn't have gotten them to stop your flight."
"About that, I didn't break the contract, did I?" Ruby asked with raised eyebrows.
"No, I broke it by showing it to the guard, but how it's written, the blame is pushed onto you." Weiss replied with a small grin. "But about Winter… we used to be close like you and Yang. But when Winter left for Atlas Academy, things changed and we had a falling out. We're going to work on it though."
"That's nice to hear." Ruby smiled. "Yang's probably going to try to hit you after today though. Breaking up with me, pulling me off a flight, getting me arrested, and now asking to get back together isn't exactly the best series of events that could have happened."
"I know. I'm really sorry, Ruby. At least they let us stay in neighbouring cells." Weiss smiled in return. "I really am sorry for ever thinking it couldn't work between us."
"I know you are, Weiss. It still hurt, though." Ruby replied. "I knew it was coming but I don't think I would have dealt with it as well as I told you before. I was barely an hour into the breakup and Yang didn't know what to do. I don't think she's ever actually been speechless before."
"Ruby… I still have no idea how things will change going forward." Weiss confessed with a bit of sadness. "I have no idea if we'll be able to stay together or not."
"That's how it's always been, hasn't it?" Ruby asked and Weiss slowly nodded, not entirely sure where she was going with her thoughts. Ruby waited and finally, Weiss voiced her reply.
"Yes, that is how it's always been." She spoke, her voice wavering slightly. "But I want to change that. You have no idea how much I want to be with you."
"Actually, I do, Weiss. Because I feel the same." Ruby replied to Weiss's comment before turning more serious. "But for now we can't make promises we can't keep, alright? I don't want either of us to get our hopes up when we don't know what will happen next. So for now, let's just live for today."
"Thank you, Ruby." Weiss nodded. She squeezed Ruby's fingers tightly through the bars and Ruby squeezed back.
"Now, there's just one thing left to do." Ruby said, much more upbeat than she had been a moment ago. "C'mon, Weiss. Let's get out of here."
"What are you doing, Ruby? You can't break out of jail!" Weiss said with her usual attitude, happy that Ruby was once again herself.
"Oh, no. I've planned something better!" Ruby explained vaguely as a guard ran down toward their cells as Ruby made a show of trying to pull the bars apart.
"Step back against the wall! Now!" he shouted as he pulled a small pistol from his belt. Weiss stepped back and Ruby simply released the bars.
"Do you have any idea who you've just arrested?" Ruby intoned with a voice Weiss immediately recognized as the mocking 'rich kid' voice she'd used to use to make fun of her once-upon-a-fight in their second year. "This, is Weiss Schnee. You know, the new CEO of Schnee Dust Company? Ring any bells, or are your ears as deaf as you are blind?"
The man stepped back, not sure if he wanted to react to the insult. Regardless, he pulled on his radio as Weiss tried to make herself look impatient by tapping her foot while waiting.
"Uhm… could you check the white girl's id?" He asked into the radio. The response was muffled in static, but he replied quickly, telling Ruby and Weiss how the conversation was going. "I don't care, just do it and do it quick!"
"Are you about finished yet?" Weiss asked while putting as much snide into the question as she could.
"Sorry, miss." He put up his hand as he pressed his ear piece to his ear with his other hand. "Yeah, I'm bringing her up now then."
Weiss watched as he fumbled the key ring at his waist and slotted the small piece of brass into her barred door. He opened it with an awkward half bow and cleared his throat.
"So sorry for the mix-up, Miss Schnee." He said as he looked down at the floor. "Your family was fundamental in creating our security system here, and I really do hope we haven't offended you in any way."
"Release her as well. I'm not pressing charges." Weiss waved with her hand to Ruby's cell. Weiss walked off without waiting for a reply and Ruby smiled slightly as he fumbled for his keys, not sure whether he should follow Weiss or her instructions.
"Thanks." Ruby nodded before she left in a cloud of rose petals.
The guard simply looked down the corridor at the now distant ladies as they turned a corner and sighed before once again speaking into his radio.
"Your flight will leave at ten tomorrow morning."
"Thanks, we'll be there." Weiss spoke into the phone before hanging it up. "Ten o'clock, Ruby."
"Whoo! We get to sleep in!" Ruby cheered as she tackled Weiss into the bed.
Weiss giggled as Ruby started tickling, or at least trying to do so. Weiss pushed her off and they both moved up to the pillows to get comfortable. It had been a very long day and now she was exhausted.
"No screwing each other while I'm in the room." A deadpanned voice spoke from the other double bed in the room.
"Sorry Winter. We won't do anything, promise!" Ruby said, sitting back up with her hand in the air like she was taking an oath.
"Ruby, get back here!" Weiss complained, pulling her by the back of her nightshirt into the bed before wrapping her securely in her arms.
"I'd feel more assured if Weiss agreed to my request as well." Winter said after a moment of Ruby giggling where Weiss fluttered her fingers around her neck.
"Don't worry, I'll wait till you're asleep." Weiss replied, earning her a smack with a pillow from the other bed that was being held by a summoned knight's arm. "Sorry! I won't do anything!"
Weiss's panicked shout sent Ruby into full on laughter as Winter joined in with a small chuckle of her own.
"That really hurt though." Weiss complained once the pillow was sent back to Winter's bed. "Winter, can you give us a lift in the morning?"
"Sure. I have a flight to catch at eleven myself." She replied sadly as she looked up at the ceiling. "There have been rumours that the movement against the kingdom's capitals will still take place in two days time. The General has ordered the special forces to have a unit standing by in each kingdom and I've been assigned to Mistral."
"Aren't those orders classified?" Weiss asked, as Ruby returned her cuddle as she calmed down.
"We have special clearance since we already know about the issue." Ruby replied. "Ozpin sent me a message just before you called me off the plane."
"Oh… so Yang and Blake?" Weiss asked, wondering if they'd been given clearance as well.
"Yang's the one who read the message to us, so…" Ruby shrugged, ignoring the glance Winter had sent their way. "We're a team anyhow, so I don't see why they shouldn't know about it."
"Alright." Weiss nodded, settling the matter. "Well, goodnight Winter. And again, I'm really sorry about your room."
"You got the girl, that's all that matters." Winter replied as she turned away from the couple. "I sleep light, so don't try anything."
"Geez, you make me out to be some horny teenager or something!" Weiss protested as Winter shrugged her shoulders.
"You're a horny adult who has her partner in bed after a fight." Winter replied. "Have your makeup sex another time."
"Weiss, just give up. She's just trying to get you mad." Ruby shushed her girlfriend and pulled her tight.
"It's working." Weiss grumbled sleepily as she tucked into Ruby's neck.
Ruby suppressed her giggling as she felt Weiss's body relax and felt hers follow suit. It's not that Ruby hadn't enjoyed the night they'd spent together the previous week, but she thought that this was her favourite type of cuddling with Weiss. Simply relaxing together like this when they were awake, or asleep, or somewhere in between.
Ruby smiled slightly, remembering the sweet nothings they'd whisper when they weren't sure whether or not they were dreaming. Ruby had never taken them to heart, but it didn't change the fact that those small words made her feel special beyond belief. Not to mention the smile that would stretch across Weiss's face and fade moments later as a blush took its place.
"Ruby?" A whisper shattered her thoughts and she shifted ever so slightly under the sleeping Weiss and looked over at Winter who was looking at her while lying on her back. "We haven't had time to speak together, and now isn't the time, but I'd like to meet you properly one day. Until then, keep Weiss happy, alright?"
Ruby nodded, giving Winter a smile before turning and placing her lips on Weiss's forehead. Wherever her girlfriend had gone in her dreams, Ruby was sure she was happy with the way her lips smiled just enough to be noticeable.
"Goodnight, Ruby." Winter whispered before shifting herself on the bed and falling to silence.
Ruby remained awake, simply enjoying Weiss's presence for almost an hour before she too succumbed to her fatigue.
