Chapter 9
Friend or Foe?
"Princess!" A loud female voice called from across the palace gardens.
Serena giggled as she shrank within a tall row of lush green hedges. The weather was warm today with just a hint of humidity that lingered like a sticky sweet kiss in the air. She tucked her long pink gown behind her as the girl neared, ensuring that her presence would remain a mystery for the moment. Her approaching footfalls grew louder on the hard cobblestone pathway that winded endlessly throughout the gardens. Serena held her breath.
The girl came to a stop just before the hedges, panting and covered in sweat. Her long blond hair stuck to her face as if she had just emerged from the nearby lake. It was Femi, her youngest guardian. She wore a flowing sky blue gown that was underneath a fitted breast plate of polished steel. A long staff hung from her fingers, dancing just above the ground, seemingly ready to strike with a deadly force if challenged.
Serena watched her with amusement. She wasn't afraid, quite the contrary in fact. She was amused. The Shadow Warriors were everything but imaginative and fun. They were all business and no pleasure. The Moon princess intended to change that even if it was their first week on the job.
"Princess! I cannot protect you if you insist on playing these childish games!" Femi fumed as she turned a wide circle. A rustle to her right caught her attention and she ran off, huffing and muttering to herself.
Serena bravely poked her head out from her hedge, straining to hear the fading footfalls of her livid guardian.
"You know princess, the south side of the garden provides more adequate coverage." A voice said from beside her.
Serena spun on her heel. Another guardian stood next to her, towering over her small stature. He stood well over six feet and his long white blond hair cascaded along the back of his broad steel armor that sat beneath a sapphire blue cloak. A heavy sword rested at his hip, ready to be unleashed upon any who dared to get too close. He lacked the serious demeanor of his comrade, in fact his piercing lavender eyes were gentle and kind.
Serena's features curved into a smile. "I like the way you think Prince Nikko."
He shook his head with a snide grin. "Just Nikko, princess."
"Very well, Nikko." She laid her hand on his arm. "Your mission is to get me to the south side of the garden…" She trailed off as she could hear yet another voice calling for her. "…without detection by any of your other warriors."
Nikko chuckled heartily. "Rhea and Femi will be easy to evade in this unknown land, but Fabian… well… there lies our problem." He bowed low to her. "I shall do my best princess." He took her hand in his own and brushed his lips along the back of her hand.
Serena felt ripples of warmth wash over her at the feel of Nikko's lips. Her cheeks flushed red. As a princess she had plenty of people before her, bowing and kissing her hand all the time. None hand sent a shiver up her arm.
"Hurry." Nikko took her hand and led her down a nearby stone stairway to the lower gardens.
Together the two snuck down the narrow passageway to the lower gardens. A looming canopy of vines and flowers sheltered their escape, shielding them from any eyes above. Trickles of sunlight filtered through the gaps, glistening off of Nikko's armor. Though he was the largest of the Shadow Warriors in her guard, she was amazed at his gentleness. His hand was rough but warm over her small one. Serena felt her cheeks flush as he looked back to shoot her a grin.
Before them something flashed by. Nikko paused and like lightning pulled her into the thick vines that covered the garden wall. He pulled her close to his chest and put a hand over her mouth to keep her quiet. His hold on her was strong and firm. She felt her heart skip a beat as her deep blue eyes settled on his.
Nikko pulled away his hand and held one finger before her lips. To their left the quiet clank of armor could be heard. It was so faint that Serena could hardly pick it out from the chirping of the birds and bubbling of a nearby fountain, but Nikko had heard it. Serena tried to keep herself from laughing as Fabian came into view. His dark hair was tied back behind his head, the loose ringlets hung between his broad shoulders. He was just as tall as Nikko only his eyes, a dark green, did not hold the same tenderness as his brother's.
"I hear you." He whispered as his eyes scanned his surroundings. He did a slow turn, looking over the shrubs and flower bushes near him. "Princess? Where are you?"
Serena pushed her head against Nikko's chest to quiet the laughter that threatened to escape. He wrapped her arms around her, pulling her tighter as Fabian did another circle before disappearing up the stairs that Nikko and Serena had just descended.
"He's gone." Nikko whispered after another minute. He released Serena who looked up at his wide grin.
"You certainly were worth the trouble mother went through to get you here." She said with another chuckle. "None of my other guards were this fun."
"None of my assignments have been this … intriguing." Nikko responded.
"I'm an assignment… like homework." Serena said with a brow perked. She felt a small pang at his comment. It was a harsh reminder that he wasn't there to play games with her but for a more sinister purpose.
"Not quite like homework." Nikko said with another grin. "More like an adventure."
"Adventure… not a word I've heard used when speaking about my protection before." Serena stated.
"You are not just any assignment just as the Moon is not just any kingdom. Being with you each day princess, is certainly an adventure and I enjoy being here." Nikko continued. "The Moon is a beautiful kingdom. Charon is very cold and dark. The sun's warmth hardly reaches our home."
"It must be beautiful though… my mother told me about her days she spent there with your father some years ago. She said it's dark but the planet is full of life. She had never seen so many creatures before… and they exhibited their own light like the fireflies on Earth." Serena added dreamily.
"It is beautiful… but it pales in comparison to the beauty of your kingdom, princess…" He opened his mouth to continue but paused again.
"Is it Fabian?" She whispered to him but Nikko silenced her with a finger pressed again, to her lips.
Before Serena could get another word out a loud explosion rocked the lower gardens. Serena screamed as a shower of stone, flowers and tree limbs rained down over them. Nikko flung his body over hers, shielding her from the debris.
Serena cowered beneath him as the garden went silent. "Nikko?" She whispered.
The air was dusty, all around her petals were still falling to the ground. The garden was unrecognizable. The stone steps that led from the high gardens were obliterated. The nearby fountains had crumbled and all the flowers and plants had been blown to pieces. They were trapped. Only the walls of the lower gardens remained.
"Nikko." She repeated as she shook her guardian again. She pushed him over. He flopped onto his back, motionless. A large gash was visible right beneath his hairline.
To her right, just as the dust was settling, she saw two figures approaching. They were soldiers. She could make out red cloaks, the same that were worn by the soldiers of Earth.
"Nikko!" She whispered again, viciously shaking him. His head rolled from side to side but he didn't come to. She pushed his white blond hair back from his face. The wound was nasty but he was breathing. She knew she couldn't stay there.
"Princess!"
Serena ducked low and looked around her. "Fabian?" She whispered.
"Up here."
Serena's gaze followed the remaining wall that led to the higher gardens. She could see Fabian's features just above the vine.
"Stay calm princess." He told her as he took off his cloak and ripped it in half. He quickly knotted the two pieces together and flung it over the wall. "Grab it and hold on tight. I'll pull you up."
Serena cast a look at the approaching soldiers. Their features were slowly growing into focus as the dust was settling. She could see one had golden hair, long and wavy. The other had short blond hair. They were getting closer.
"Princess… look at me." Fabian said urgently. His deep green eyes focused on hers. "You can do this. Grab the cloak."
Serena shakily stepped towards the wall. She cast a glance down at Nikko's motionless body. "I can't leave him."
"They don't want him princess… they want you!" Fabian said. "Now quick!"
Serena reached forward and wrapped her arm around the cloak. Fabian pulled her up and with one arm, he wrapped it around her waist and lifted her up.
Another loud explosion rocked the gardens, sending a wall of stone crumbling near them. Serena screamed as she felt Fabian too, shielding her with his body. She could hear the stone and rock clink as it hit his steel armor.
"Fabian!" Femi's voice could be heard. She and Rhea, weapons drawn, ran towards them, jumping over the piles of debris that littered the once beautiful Moon garden.
"Over here!" Fabian responded as he stood, shaking the dust from his uniform. "Take the princess to the palace!" He lifted a shaking Serena up. Serena looked herself over, amazed that the only damage she had endured was several tears to her pink gown. Her hair, up in its usual odango style, was miraculously still intact albeit a few strands of hair out of place.
Nikko, finally having regained consciousness, jumped and appeared next to Fabian. He unsheathed his sword but swayed dangerously, fighting to keep alert.
"No!" Serena suddenly felt a wave of panic as the two Earth soldiers spotted them. She looked straight into the eyes of the guard with the short blond hair. His green eyes widened as he unsheathed his own sword and came charging towards them.
Serena screamed.

Serena shot up.
Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the bright lights. She wasn't in the gardens at the Moon Palace. She was in the temple. She recognized the sliding doors and simple furnishings. She was on a bed in the middle of the room. She could feel the soft sheets on her legs. Her white gown was gone, instead she was in shorts and a tank top.
"You're up."
Serena jumped but was quickly pushed back down onto the bed by a gentle but strong hand.
"You need to stay lying down." Amy said as she took out her stethoscope and listened to her chest. "I'm not sure what spell Femi cast over you but there is a lot of dark energy within you."
"What does that mean?" Serena asked as her attention turned to Amy. Where was Blake?
"I'm not sure yet but I think there was some already within you from when you were first taken. That was the first time I noticed something was off. Femi may have only reinforced that energy. I believe it is the reason you can't transform." Amy explained as she took off her stethoscope and grabbed her flashlight. She shined it into Serena's eyes.
Serena recoiled. "Jeez Amy… don't blind me."
"No concussion." Amy continued as she pocketed her flashlight. "I think you're okay"
"Clearly I'm not okay Amy!" Serena snapped. "I can't transform. If I can't transform, I can't use the Silver Crystal… if I can't use the— "
"Stop." Amy said, shaking her head. "Don't think like that right now Serena. We'll figure out a way to get this dark energy out. Raye is about to search the fires and Trista is looking back through her archives. This fight isn't over."
"Of course not… but I just get the feelings things will get worse before they get better." Serena whispered as a knock sounded at the door.
Blake appeared. His right arm was bandaged and he had a few visible bruises on his arm but he was standing and walking on his own.
" You're… you're okay" Serena said softly to him as she sat up.
"I'm gonna go check on Raye." Amy said, politely excusing herself. She cast Serena one long glance as she left the two in silence.
A wave of guilt washed over Serena. The day had finally come. He knew her secret; a secret she had kept from him for their entire three-year relationship. She hadn't told him about her history in Tokyo as Sailor Moon or that she was a reincarnated princess or that her destiny was … No. He didn't know everything. How could she even begin to explain?
"Why didn't you tell me?" Blake asked after a long beat. He ran his fingers through his dark brown hair. He emitted a long sigh as he watched her mentally battle with herself. "Three years of conversations and the fact you are Sailor Moon never came up even once."
"I couldn't, I tried to. Goodness knows I tried a million times but I could never think of what to say. How could I? And it was my past Blake, I was done… at least I thought I was." She said sheepishly. She reached for his hand but he simply stared at her.
"You should've told me Serena… jeez I asked you to be my wife. I asked you to spend the rest of your life with me and you said yes. YOU said yes… and still you couldn't…" He turned from her in frustration.
"What are you saying Blake? You don't want to be with me anymore?" Her voice quieted as she felt her insides go cold.
He hesitated with his back still towards her. He looked out the small window, watching the ever present downpour create a waterfall off the edge of the temple. It was so dark out that it seemed as if the ground was a lake that stretched on for miles. A loud boom of thunder shook the temple as the lights flickered. "I don't want that Serena. But where do we go from here?" He turned towards her and leaned against the wall. His deep blue eyes bore into hers.
"I love you Blake." She whispered and climbed out of the bed. She went over to him and put her hands on his hips. He didn't wrap his arms around her as he normally would have. "I left a lot of baggage here when I left and I never intended to return to it. I wanted a fresh start. You were the fresh start I needed. I didn't think I'd find a man so wonderful or good to me, but I did. I'm sorry I wasn't honest with you. You didn't deserve that. You deserve so much more and I want to be the woman that you deserve Blake, I truly do. I promise to tell you everything you want to know if you'll still have me."
Blake looked down at her. He put a hand on her cheek and met her lips. "I love you Serena… that hasn't changed." He whispered back and at last, wrapped his arms around her. "No more secrets."
"No more secrets." Serena promised as she met his lips again.
"Am I interrupting something?" Darien asked from the doorframe. His arms were crossed.
Serena's cheeks flushed as Blake wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "No… we're done here."
"Great, we're having a meeting in the fire room." Darien said with a curt nod and left. He gave Serena a questioning glance but thankfully, said nothing more.
"He's the next question I'll have." Blake said to her as they crossed the room. "I don't like how he looks at you."
Serena emitted a nervous laugh. "It's just…. just Darien."
Blake stopped and raised one eyebrow.
"Okay, okay… later." She said as she kissed his cheek. "Let's go."

"What are you doing?!" Lita screeched as she ran across the Cherry Hill Temple's kitchen. She was busy preparing dinner for the scouts for that evening and was beginning to rethink her offer to allow Nephrite to assist. Her dark green eyes flashed dangerously at him that was offset by the fact she was wearing a very frilly red apron.
"You said to add some seasoning." Nephrite stated as he stirred the pot merrily.
"That's paprika! A LOT of paprika." Lita said, panicking. "It'll make it spicy."
"It'll make it delicious." Nephrite corrected as he continued to stir. "Your food could use more flavor."
Lita's eyes opened wide. She resisted an overwhelming urge to slap him. "Excuse me? I am a professional chef, Tokyo's best, my food doesn't NEED anything." Her tone was strained, barely above a whisper.
"And your food is good." Nephrite stated quickly, sensing her anger. "I just wanted to try something new." He raised his hands defensively and stepped away from the pot just in case she decided to throw it at him.
Lita pushed him aside and dipped her spoon into the pot. She lifted it to her lips, blew, and then tasted it.
"It's good right?" Nephrite grinned as a few strands of his long auburn hair fell before his eyes.
Lita was surprised. It was pretty good. She had never thought of adding paprika to her dish before but it actually complimented the other flavors well. "It's good." She admitted as she set her spoon down on the counter. She lifted her hand and pushed his hair back behind his ear for him. "And just a word of advice, a chef always has his or her hair back to keep from contaminating the food."
Nephrite was surprised at her tenderness towards him. Her fingers had sent a shiver down his spine. "That's why you're wearing that dress over your jeans?" He asked, pointing to her apron.
"It's called an apron, not a dress, and it protects my clothing from any splatters. Plus, it has some handy pockets for storage." She smoothed out the red apron. "It's not my apron of choice but it's all Raye has at the temple and you'd do well to wear one next time. I can see half the soup on your shirt."
Nephrite looked himself over. His dark jeans and black shirt were coated with specks of sauce, seasoning and other mystery foods. "Yeah… maybe." He agreed and in one swift movement, lifted his shirt up above his head and tossed it aside.
"I'll get the bowls. You grab the ladle. Everyone is meeting in the fire room and we have dinner." Lita said, quickly changing the subject. She averted her eyes from his naked torso. She didn't notice the strong definition of his abs and toned arms nor did she see the large tattoo with his knight's crest nestled between his cut shoulder blades. No, instead her fingers fumbled to catch a grip on the bowls.
"Maybe I'll get the bowls." Nephrite stated as he caught a bowl that Lita had let slip. His hand was like lightning, catching it just a few inches from the tiled floor.
"Yeah… um… I'll get the soup." She said, keeping her eyes away from him.
Nephrite took the bowls into the next room while Lita brought in the pot. Everyone was already seated on the plush pillows that littered the floor around the fire. Blake and Serena were in the corner; Blake was holding her with his one good arm while Serena's hand rested over his. Next to them Amy and Zoisite were deep in conversation with Mina and Kunzite bickering nearby. Darien and Jadeite were speaking to Raye who was seated before the fire, getting herself ready for her next reading. Amara and Michelle were snoozing together on their pillow, both exhausted from work that day.
"Dinner!" Nephrite announced as he brought the bowls and spoons to a short table. He helped Lita disperse the steaming bowls of soup as Trista finally arrived.
"Let's get started." Raye said as everyone sat down with their soup. She rubbed her temples as the fire flared up. Outside the thunder shook the temple walls as the room quieted. Instantly her brows furrowed. The fire cackled and grew in size as Raye exhaled deeply.
"Serena…" She reached for Serena's hand.
Cautiously Serena left Blake and settled beside her friend. She laid her hand in Raye's. Instantly the fire roared. Trista waved her staff over the fire and an image popped up. It was the Moon gardens. Serena's mouth fell open as the dream she had just earlier that day came to life before her. She saw Nikko and Fabian, Femi and Rhea… the explosions, the debris and chaos. The last image she saw was the knight from Earth. His features, clearer now with Trista's staff, were clear as day. The golden locks and green eyes were impossible to miss.
Zoisite's soup bowl fell to the floor as everyone's attention turned towards him.
"It was you." Serena said just as Zoisite's face came into view in the fire.
Zoisite stood, holding up his hands defensively. "Hey… what I did during the Silver Millennium is not the type of man that I am now. I worked for Beryl then, I serve my prince now."
"You tried to kill me." Serena stated, unsure of how to process this information. She knew Zoisite was no longer a threat to her, but an ally. Still, she couldn't shake the overwhelming feeling of danger she now received from him.
Zoisite signed. "Jed and I attacked that day to get you Sailor Moon. Obviously we didn't succeed."
Jadeite shook his head. "Hey, don't pull me into this too."
"The memory is incomplete." Trista stated as she waved her staff, sending the images into nothing more than a sliver of smoke. "We do not see how it ends."
"The Shadow Warriors protected me." Serena surmised. "The Generals lost."
"Do not assume anything." Raye advised Serena. "That could be dangerous. We know at some point these Shadow Warriors no longer protected you. Today they threaten you and the Generals help protect you. We are still missing many pieces of the puzzle."
"Keep searching the fire." Serena stated as she hugged herself. She felt so uncomfortable with everyone's eyes on her. She wasn't sure how to process this information, especially with Blake now aware that she was not only a sailor scout, but royalty. She could add that fact to the already long list of awkward discussions she was to have with him.
Raye nodded and went back to searching the fires as Trista sat with a bowl of soup.
"Serena." Amy said, calling her friend over to her as Zoisite went to speak to the other Generals that had crowded around Darien.
Serena joined Amy on her pillow. "Thanks again for earlier Amy…"
"It's no problem." Amy stated dismissively.
"How are you holding up?" She asked her, feeling awful about not having asked sooner. She couldn't image what Amy was going through with her identity exposed.
"Actually, it's not as bad as I thought it would be." She stated as she brushed her hair back behind her ears. "Zoi has been great at keeping everyone away."
"Zoi?" Serena felt herself grinning like a school girl at the sound of his nickname. "And how is Zoi treating you?"
"He's a perfect gentleman." Amy said quickly as her cheeks flushed. She pulled her light blue cardigan tighter around herself as thunder shook the temple walls again.
"And?" Serena prodded as she bumped shoulders with her. "You like him."
Amy's cheeks flushed beet red as she hid her face within her hands. "I don't know Serena. I can't like him, he's … he's…"
"A man." Serena finished for her. "I don't see what the problem is."
"He used to be our enemy." Amy said as her hands fell from her face. "It just… doesn't feel right."
"Being happy and liking someone is normal Amy. You haven't had a boyfriend since Greg back in high school, even then I don't think you guys were really a couple. You deserve some happiness Amy even if it is with Zoisite." Serena stated as she set her hand on her friend's shoulder. "Give him a chance."
"You're telling me to give you a chance after you just freaked over what you saw in the fire?" Amy asked, incredulous.
"You were quick to defend him, but you are right Amy. He's not the enemy, and I can't be upset over something that happened in another life." Serena stated. She caught Blake staring at her from across the room.
"Give him a chance." She told Amy and then with a grin, stood and crossed the room back to Blake.
"Are you aware of how crazy all of this sounds?" He told her as soon as she sat next to him. He sat down his still full bowl of soup and looked at her. "Like you all need to be committed crazy."
"To an outsider, yes, I'm aware of how it sounds." Serena whispered back to him. "But this is our reality. This isn't our first life… we were all first born in the last millennium." She said, looking him directly in the eye. "The world was much different then."
"How old are you?" Blake asked, apprehensive.
"I haven't lied to you. I'm not thousands upon thousands of years old. I lived during the Silver Millennium when our solar system was full of life and wonders that the world now lacks." She explained. "I was a princess of the Moon Kingdom, everyone here came from different planets but we were all united against our enemy, Queen Beryl. She brought death and destruction to our peaceful galaxy." She continued. "The Generals, the four men with Darien, were his protectors that were brainwashed to join the Negaverse, the evil that gave Queen Beryl power. They were enemies that have since become our allies."
Blake studied her for a moment, taking all of the information in. It was clear it was weighing heavily upon him. "Reincarnation." He said.
"Yes." Serena replied. "My mother… the Queen of the Moon, sent all of us to be reborn in this century. She wanted to give us a fresh start." She took Blake's hand in her own. "It brought me to you."
"Wow." Blake sat back against the wall and ran his hands through his hair. "So you're a princess."
Serena blushed and leaned back against the wall next to him. "Yeah... try not to think of me that way. I'm just Serena. I'm not really a princess now."
"Yes you are." Mina said from across the room, interrupting them.
Serena sighed. Of course everyone was listening in to their conversation.
"You're still Sailor Moon though." Blake commented as he turned to her. "You're not just Serena."
"Yes." Serena admitted as she scooted closer to him. "But I can't transform. There's something wrong with me."
"The dark energy." Kunzite said as he stood. "I can feel it within you."
"That's what Amy said." Serena said, turning to look at him. "We can't figure out how to get it out."
Kunzite looked at her uncomfortably. "It's not an easy process to remove it once it's been placed within someone."
"What do we have to do?" Amy asked him. The conversation around them died out as everyone turned their attention to Kunzite.
"The Silver Crystal drew out dark energy once." He commented. "But since you wield the silver crystal, it may not work for you." He turned to look at the other generals. "The other options aren't desirable." He shifted uncomfortably.
"What are our other options?" Darien questioned. His gaze fell hard on Kunzite.
"Drawing the dark energy out of her could kill her." Nephrite stated. "It's almost impossible to take out the dark energy without taking life energy as well."
"There is also the option of actually using the dark energy until it has been entirely diminished." Jadeite added. "Though you've never used dark energy before. That may be what Nikko wants. It could consume you."
"The last option…" Nephrite spoke at last. "Is to overcome it yourself."
"How do I do that?" Serena asked.
Nephrite shrugged. "I can't tell you. It's something you'd have to figure out, princess."
"That's not helpful." She groaned as she ran her fingers through her long blond tresses. "What if I do nothing?"
"The dark energy could fester and grow. It could eventually take you over." Kunzite warned. "This was how Beryl was able to get so many to turn dark. She filled them with dark energy and they had no idea how to fight against it."
"I could become a slave to Nikko?" Serena screamed.
"It's possible." Kunzite said. "Though a slave is probably not what he has in mind."
"You can fight it Serena." Trista reassured her. "You are stronger than all of us here. The Silver Crystal may be able to protect you. Keep it close. We will find a way to beat the darkness."
The temple shook again as the lights flickered out. The only thing still illuminating the temple room was the fire. It roared one last time, nearly reaching the tip of the ceiling.
Raye shot up. "Something's happened."
Amara, who had been silent in the corner, suddenly stood and showed everyone her phone. She looked apologetically at the scouts crowded before her. "It's Mina…" She looked over at Mina whose color drained from her face. It was a video that had been posted to social media. It was her transforming into Sailor Venus and running to fight Femi.
"Mina." Serena gasped as Mina's phone suddenly buzzed in her pocket.
"I was next." Mina spoke at last as she cast a look at her phone. It was the number to her news station. She shakily put the phone to her ear. A loud voice could be heard speaking on the other line but no words could be made out. Within seconds the phone slipped from Mina's hand.
"They're at the news station. They want me to come down… with Sailor Moon. Fabian is holding the entire station hostage." Her voice quivered.
Kunzite stood quickly and put his hands on her elbows to steady her.
"They want a fight." Darien stated as he stood. "We're not giving up Sailor Moon."
"I'm coming." Blake stated as he too stood to join the scouts.
"No way!" Serena said quickly. "You're injured… you have no powers."
"I can't let anyone threaten you." Blake commented as he looked down at his fiancé. "I will always protect you Serena."
"We will protect her." Darien said. "That's OUR job." He moved forward to Serena and stood protectively next to her. "You'd just be in the way. You're a mortal."
"I can't just stay here!" Blake protested.
"He's right." Trista said to Blake. "You're safer here. This is our fight." Her eyes were kind but firm. Blake opened his mouth to protest but Serena shook her head. She couldn't let him put himself in danger. She couldn't handle losing him on top of everything else that was going on.
"Let's go." Raye said to everyone as she withdrew her transformation pen. "That is the last one of us that they will expose!"
