Hey everyone, 087-B here, back with another chapter of Gravity Falls: Sinnoh Adventure! With "A New Day" out of the way, I can finally focus on my other stories, especially this one! Maybe I can finally update more frequently for a while!
But...I have band camp next week. Eugh.
But enough about that, in the previous chapter, we followed Group A in their escapades up the Northern portion of Route 215, and Pacifica and Mabel battled! First rival battle with them in a while! Now that I think about it, that last chapter was pretty Pacifica-focused. This story needed a chapter like that badly.
In this chapter, we'll be checking in on Group B in the Southern half of the route. In case you've forgotten, Group B consists of Dipper, Soos, Wendy, and Lucas. Maybe they'll finally regroup with Group A and reach Veilstone City in this chapter? Who knows! Read to find out!
Now, on with the show!
-Chapter 33: Road to Veilstone - Part III-
Wendy carefully sidled along a muddy slope, back pressed against a damp rock wall, before she slid down in front of a few plants that were just about her height. She smirked. "Knew it dude, these are berry trees."
Dipper hurried around a few trees and panted. "Did you...really...need to...take...the mountain path…?"
Wendy shrugged. "Why not? It's much more fun to just shuffle along ledges than walk on wet grass."
Dipper sighed. "So you did all that just to find berries?"
"Not just any berries, specifically Chesto Berries." Wendy examined the berries. "...I have no clue what those look like."
Dipper ducked under some trees and pulled out his regional guidebook. "Uh...oh, they're blue, or indigo...like this."
The boy showed Wendy the picture, and the teen looked back and forth. Finally, she plucked a few berries off of one of the plants. "Perfect, just the ones."
"Why do you need Chesto Berries?" The boy asked. "They wake Pokemon up, yeah, but...Awakenings can do that, and so can Full Heals."
"They're not for me, they're for Pacifica." Wendy said, crossing in her arms. "They're for her Feebas."
Dipper raised an eyebrow. "Why would-"
"Hey dudes!" Soos walked around the trees, Lucas in tow.
The man chuckled. "Try not to run off too far, we can't get separated."
"Heh, sorry…" Dipper rubbed the back of his head. "Uh...Wendy was just getting some Chesto Berries, apparently for Pacifica's Feebas."
Lucas thought for a moment before something clicked. "Ah, for evolving it, yes?"
Wendy snapped her fingers. "Bingo."
Dipper blinked. "...am I missing something here? I've never heard of berries being used for evolution…"
"That's cause berries aren't used for evolution, ya dork." Wendy said. "I'll explain later, okay?"
Dipper shrugged, still wrapped up in confusion and curiosity.
"Can we move on? I kinda...don't wanna be drenched out of my clothing." Lucas chuckled dryly, shivering somewhat.
"Yeah dudes, let's get back on the path." Soos said. "I think the rain is seeping through my bag, and I don't think a freezing Pokemon egg is a healthy Pokemon egg."
"Yeah, we've all got eggs to care about. C'mon." Dipper beckoned with a simple hand gesture, as everyone went around the trees and returned to the main path of Route 215.
By this point, both groups had passed the halfway point, and were closing in on regrouping outside of Veilstone City. A place long discussed, nobody really knew what to expect, save for Lucas, who refrained from discussing anything about the city to let everyone get their own first impressions upon arrival. Dipper was incredibly excited to take on the gym challenge. All he knew was that the Gym Leader was a Fighting-Type user, and he had a feeling his Staravia would easily net him a badge. Shrugging off his previous gym experience, what with initially losing to Gardenia back in Eterna City, the boy in he ball cap felt like he had this fight in the bag.
"You excited?"
Dipper snapped out of his thoughts to look up at Wendy, who was walking beside him. He smirked determinedly. "Heck yeah, it'll be a sinch!"
"Oh really?" Wendy chuckled. "I get that you have a Staravia, but don't get too cocky. You might get reckless and throw the match as soon as it starts."
Dipper rolled his eyes. "Are YOU ready? What kinda team do you have for that challenge?"
"Pffft, none of your business, Dipstick." Wendy teased. "My team's mine, and your team's yours."
"Well now my curiosity is piquing." The boy said. "C'mon, tell me!"
"I don't gotta." Wendy shrugged. "Tell me your team then."
"You already know my team..." Dipper muttered.
"Exactly."
"So what's the point if I told you?"
"There's no point, just like if I told you my team."
Dipper grunted. "Uh...Wartortle, Rotom...and the egg I guess...is that all?"
"Close, one more." Wendy replied.
"One more? I've only seen those two."
"Nope, I'm pretty sure I showed off my last one back in Eterna City."
"Sheesh, way back then?" Dipper sighed. "Uhh...hmm."
"Give up?" Wendy chuckled.
"Nope, lemme think..." Dipper pursed his lips before something clicked in his head. "Wait, Flareon!"
"There, I didn't have to tell you anything." Wendy said.
Dipper thought for a moment. "...but that means none of your teammates have any natural type advantages over Fighting-Type Pokemon."
"You don't know the movesets, dude. Plus, Rotom is part Ghost-Type, thus rendering him entirely immune to Fighting-Type attacks." Wendy said. "I've been a trainer longer than you, dude, I know what I'm doing."
"True..." Dipper rolled his eyes. "...buuuut you're pretty rusty. Three years of doing nothing and the only Pokemon you've caught since your return was Rotom."
"Dude, stop, you're doing something...terrible!" Wendy mocked a gasp.
"...what?"
"You're...winning this argument!" Wendy threw up her arms, they playfully smacked the boy's head with a chuckle. "You're a dork."
Dipper snorted and chuckled himself, rubbing the back of his head. "Heh...sheesh, this is such a boring walk."
"Wanna make it more interesting?"
Dipper raised an eyebrow. "Interesting how...?"
Wendy smirked and pulled out a Pokeball, letting the sphere get doused in the rain. The older, duller looking ball was tossed in the air, then caught in Wendy's hand.
"Battle me, dude."
The boy's eyes widened. "Wait, huh?!"
At that moment, Lucas and Soos has hurried up from behind the two to catch up with them. Lucas exhaled, panting slightly. "Sheesh, don't just hurry off like that!"
Soos panted. "Yeah...dudes...!"
"Heh, sorry guys." Wendy chuckled.
"...you...wanna battle?" Dipper asked.
"Yeah man, c'mon." The girl extended her arm out to the boy, pointing the Pokeball in his face. "Show me whatcha got."
Dipper simply stared at the Pokeball for a moment. "...you have three Pokemon. I have four. How is that fair?"
"We'll use three each." Wendy said. "Is THAT fair enough for you?"
"I'll be the referee, if that's okay." Lucas offered. "I'm quite interested to see how this will play out."
"Me too dudes!" Soos got between the two. "Don't worry Dip, I'm rooting for you all the way! ...unless Wendy gets the advantage. Then I'm rooting for her."
The two simply looked at Soos with dumbfounded looks.
"Anyways..." Wendy muttered. "That sound good? We fight, then keep going until we reach the entrance to Veilstone City, and then we wait for everyone else so we can enter together. Sound good?"
Dipper smirked and nodded. "You're on, red head."
The two took opposing sides on the path, ignoring the rain drizzling on their caps. They readied their Pokeballs as Soos sat under some trees to watch, and Lucas stood between the two, off to the side, to announce the start of the match.
"The match between Dipper Pines of Piedmont, California, North America, and Wendy Corduroy of Gravity Falls, Oregon, North America, will now commence! Each trainer is allowed the use of three Pokemon, and no switching is allowed until one Pokemon is rendered unable to continue battling." He called out. "Trainers, choose your Pokemon and...begin!"
"Go! Flareon!" Wendy threw out her old Pokeball, out popping the scruffy red quadruped Pokemon. It plopped down on the grass on all fours, prepared to do battle.
Dipper eyed the Flareon. He hadn't ever recorded its data, so he pulled out his Pokedex to do so.
Flareon, The Flame Pokemon
Type: Fire
Ability: Flash Fire
Inhaled air is heated in the flame sac in its body to an intense fire over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
"Huh, interesting..." Dipper muttered, putting away his Pokedex.
"Ugh, Dipper, just choose your teammate!" Wendy groaned. The boy took out one of his Pokeballs.
"I haven't had much use for this guy in a while, but since Eterna City is long past, and with the rain..." Dipper eyed the Pokeball in his hand before throwing it out. "Go! Magikarp!"
The Pokeball popped open, and out came the red fish Pokemon. It flopped down on the grass, hopping about and chanting its name absentmindedly.
Wendy chuckled. "By this point, I expected a Gyarados, Dipper."
"Gyarados...?" Dipper blinked.
Wendy stared before face-palming. "Oh for the love of...do you really not know?"
"Know what?"
"About Magikarp's evolution." Wendy shook her head. "Every trainer knows that if you work through the hardships of training a Magikarp, you get the super powerful Pokemon known as Gyarados. It's a really strong Water/Flying-Type that even learns Dragon-Type moves."
"Dragon-Type moves?!" Dipper exclaimed. "Sheesh, I gotta evolve him quick!"
"Take your time, dude. Don't rush an evolution, just let it happen when it does." Wendy shrugged. "Now if you don't mind, I'd like to battle."
"Heh, yeah." Dipper chuckled nervously. "Ahem, Magikarp! Use-!"
"Flareon! Use Quick Attack!" The teen interrupted.
The mammalian Pokemon shot forward at breakneck speed, striking Magikarp in a zig-zag loop before circling back over in front of Wendy. The attack sent Magikarp hurdling into the air, where it flopped down onto the grass behind Dipper. The boy gasped and whirled around.
"M-Magikarp!" He exclaimed, before he glared at Wendy. "Hey, that was a dirty move!"
"Quick Attack is a priority move, dude. It's meant to go first." Wendy explained. "Abilities and stuff don't matter when priority moves are used."
"Wow...I didn't realize battling was this complicated."
"Pfft, it'll be second nature once you're used to it." Wendy shrugged. "This isn't the first route of the region. Battles are gonna be getting tougher, dude. You gotta be ready."
Dipper nodded as Magikarp hopped back over. "Magikarp! Use Water Gun!"
Magikarp hopped up and shot a beam of water from its mouth, flying through the air quickly and striking the Fire-Type Pokemon. It flinched and slid back, but shook off the damage like it was nothing, simply repositioning itself in front of Wendy.
"Wait...what?" Dipper's eyes widened. "But...type advantage, a-and rain, and..."
"Magikarp's not built for battle until it evolves, dude." Wendy sighed. "Flareon is a much stronger Pokemon. Plus, it's evolved, which automatically makes it stronger."
"Well you have a point there..." Dipper thought for a moment before he had an idea. "Magikarp! Use Flail!"
The fish Pokemon flopped about aimlessly on the grass, before hopping towards Flareon, slamming into the dazed Pokemon repeatedly and sending it in numerous directions. Flareon grunted and yipped in pain before the final slam sent it hurling down into the ground, where it lay covered in mud and unmoving.
The single attack rendered it unconscious.
Wendy's eyes widened before she sighed and recalled her Pokemon. "You still did good, bud. Been a while since you last battled, and you're still awesome. Rest up."
Lucas' eyes widened from the sidelines. "A Magikarp that knows Water Gun, and even Flail at such a low level...truly a spectacle."
Dipper smirked and crossed his arms. "Take that!"
Wendy simply huffed and took out her next Pokeball; an all too familiar Ultra Ball. "Try this on for size! Go Rotom!"
The red head threw out her Ultra Ball, and out popped her infamous Shiny Rotom, sparkles and stars bursting from its being as it emerged from the ball. The form-changed Ghost-Type hovered in the air, twitching and twirling about with glee as it prepared for its battle.
Dipper grimaced. "Crap...which changed?"
"What?"
"Which type?" Dipper asked. "Is it Ice/Ghost or Ice/Electric?"
Wendy chuckled and shook her head. "I'm not telling. If you don't know, take a chance!"
"But that chance could cost me the battle!"
"So what?"
Dipper huffed. "So I won't win!"
Wendy blinked. "Dude, worry about the battle! Thinking about the outcome won't help. Besides, you don't have to win every match ever."
Dipper simply breathed. "...Magikarp, use Flail!"
The red fish Pokemon flopped towards the hovering refrigerator.
Wendy smirked. "Rotom, counterattack with Shock Wave!"
The possessed appliance Pokemon quickly acted, spinning up into the air and shooting out numerous little beams of electricity at random. The spastic nature of the Pokemon's attacking methods made everyone duck and dodge away from the flying electrical bolts. A ripple of energy pierced Magikarp, sending it down to the ground where it spastically flopped before going still, falling unconscious. The rain of electricity soon ceased as Rotom returned to ground level with a giggly cry.
Dipper got up from the muddy ground, wiping as much dirt from his clothes as he could. He glared at Wendy as he recalled his Pokemon. "Maybe try and keep that thing under control next time!"
Wendy grunted. "I'm sorry, alright? It just acts out like this!"
"Whatever..." Dipper rolled his eyes. He thought about which Pokemon to use next.
Ugh...none of my Pokemon really work here. Combee is too weak for battling, Staravia is gonna be unable to fly...and both of them are weak to Rotom anyways. My best bet is...
"Go! Monferno!" Dipper threw out his next Pokeball, out popping his signature starting Pokemon. The monkey landed on the wet grass, wincing and hissing as the ran pounded against its body.
Wendy smirked. "Really? A Fire-Type in the rain?"
"It's my only chance!"
Wendy rolled her eyes and pointed at Monferno. "Quick, Rotom! Use Confuse Ray!"
Rotom obeyed, twirling about and shooting out a stream of spiraling orbs, which circled forward towards Monferno.
Dipper readied before making his move. "Monferno! Hop over and counterattack with Mach Punch!"
Monferno leaped into the air, doing a forward flip before its fist began to glow brightly. Before Rotom could react, the powerful punch connected, and the super effective attack dealt was enough to send Rotom spinning down to the ground, where it collapsed on its back and fainted.
Wendy sighed and recalled her Pokemon. "Bud, you gotta calm down during battle. But great work, you did your best."
Monferno returned in front of its trainer. Dipper smirked. "One down for me, two down for you."
Wendy glared before smirking. "You're doomed, dude."
Dipper was confused before his eyes widened. "Uh oh..."
"Go! Wartortle!" Wendy threw out her final Pokeball, revealing her prized starter Pokemon. Dipper quickly yanked out his Pokedex.
Wartortle, The Turtle Pokemon
Type: Water
Ability: Torrent
It is said to live 10,000 years. Its furry tail is popular as a symbol of longevity.
Wartortle was a bipedal, indigo-blue Pokémon similar to a turtle. It had brown eyes, a dark blue streak on each cheek, and two sharp teeth protruding from its upper jaw. It had three clawed fingers and pointed toes. Bluish white fur covered its long ears and tail, and a brown shell with a pale yellow underside encased its body. A thick, white rim separated the upper and lower halves of the shell.
Dipper put his Pokedex away and crossed his arms. "Wartortle...finally a chance to face it and observe it. I haven't seen it since way back in Floaroma Town..."
"What'cha thinking about, dude?" Wendy smirked.
"Well...I'm feeling confident." Dipper said. "Call me stupid, but I think that, since this weather isn't fit for either Staravia or Combee, I'm gonna go all out with Monferno here and see if I can win this."
"Okay...you're stupid." Wendy chuckled. "You can forfeit right here and accept that I've got the high ground this time."
"No, I think I can do this!" Dipper glared. "Monferno, use Mach Punch once again!"
Wendy snapped her fingers. "Skull Bash!"
Wartortle stood its ground, and when Monferno leapt up to attack, the turtle Pokemon retaliated by grabbing its fist to stop it. Then it threw the surprised monkey into the air, where it then leaped up and mashed its head into it, connecting temple to temple, where the Fire-Type was sent hurtling to the ground at high speeds, creating a cloud of dirt, dust, and mud.
Dipper braced himself, dodging some of the mud. "M-Monferno! Are you okay?!"
Out from the mini crater caused by the impact came the horribly battered Monferno. It panted and heaved, struggling to maintain balance as it stood. Finally he let out a cry and stiffened, before breaking into a fighting stance. It was ready for more.
Dipper smirked. "Yes! We can do this!"
"Sheesh, it's really resilient!" Wendy commended. "Go on then, make your move!"
"Will do." Dipper extended a hand. "Monferno! Flame Wheel!"
Monferno breathed and used as much energy and strength as it could muster to rev into a ball of fire. The rain couldn't extinguish it as it sped forward towards Wartortle.
Wendy chuckled. "Wartortle, use Protect!"
A see-through cube encompassed around Wartortle, and Monferno slammed into the outer panel, losing focus and stumbling back out of the attack as no harm was done to Wendy's Pokemon. The box soon faded, leaving Wartortle open, but ready to strike.
"Now let's end this." Wendy said. "Extinguish this monkey with Water Gun!"
With a smirk, Wartortle puffed up its cheeks, before it shot out a large stream of water from its mouth. It quickly doused the monkey and sent it tumbling back in the muddy grass, before it landed in front of Dipper. Monferno's eyes were shut, and it didn't move from where it lay. It had fainted.
Wendy had won.
Dipper collapsed to his knees, and he recalled his Pokemon to its ball. He stared at Monferno's Pokeball and sighed before putting it away. "I'll get you guys healed at Veilstone...nice work."
Wendy recalled her Wartortle and approached, offering the boy a hand. "Nice job, Dipper. That was fun."
Dipper took her hand and got to his feet, before he smiled. "You're strong, but I can totally be stronger!"
Wendy rolled her eyes. "One day, maybe."
Lucas clapped as he approached. "Phenomenal battle. Truly a sight to see."
"Yeah! Nice job dudes!" Soos cheered as he jogged over to the others.
Dipper chuckled and rubbed the back of his head. "Shall we all continue? We have a city to get to."
Everyone nodded, and once they were set, the four continued down the path to Veilstone City.
Just as Dipper, Soos, Wendy, and Lucas descended a small flight of stairs to head towards a building that served as a gateway between routes and cities, they happened to see that, not too far to their left, coming down another flight of stairs, was Group A; Mabel, Pacifica, Candy, Grenda, and Lazy Susan. Mabel locked eyes with her brother and grinned, sprinting over to hug him as the other four came over as well.
"Yay! We all did it!" Mabel giggled.
Dipper chuckled and stumbled a bit before he hugged his sister. "Good to see you too, Mabes. And yeah, we all made it to Veilstone City!"
"Well technically we are not there yet." Candy pointed out. "We have to step through the gate first."
"Let's make our first steps into Veilstone City super memorable!" Grenda said.
"Well then let's hurry!" Mabel eagerly pulled her brother over to the entrance of the gate. Then, once everyone was lined up in front, they stepped through together.
The building was dry, and everyone was thankful to finally be out of the endless rain. It was a relieving feel to be in an air-conditioned building, rather than out in a mucky route. Dipper led the others out into the streets, admiring the buildings for a brief moment before turning to the group.
"Alright everyone, we've finally made it! But we still gotta remember to keep our eyes out. This city doesn't have the best reputation in the world, so be careful and stay safe. Got it? Any questions?" The boy waited for a response, but all he got were wide-eyed, dropped-jaw expressions looking up and behind him. He turned. "What are you guys...
"...oh no."
His eyes locked with a large, rectangular building resting on a concrete hill. The massive blue and black building had numerous windows and some satellites on top, but the most striking feature was not the dishes, or the spikes, or the large yellow ring rotating around the exterior.
It was the familiar golden 'G' that was plastered on the front wall.
-(End Of Chapter)-
To be continued!
Yay! The first battle between Dipper and Wendy, the regrouping of everyone, and the arrival in Veilstone City, only to find another Team Galactic building, all in one chapter! And we only have two chapters left before the Season 3 finale! Your minds will be blown!
Also, no, none of Dipper and Wendy's interactions in this chapter indicate any sort of "WenDip". I don't support that ship, but to each their own. As for any romance whatsoever in this story...I don't wanna do any.
Ah yes, now for the next Caesar Cipher.
