...
"We've got one more stop to make," Daiz informed Bulma.
"Please tell me we're not carrying another load of supplies!" the Earth born woman protested.
The Kabochan pirate chuckled, "No it's time to get something to eat."
"Good. I'm starv…."
Bulma let out a squeal of surprise as she suddenly found herself airborne. Daiz had scooped her up in his arms and taken to the sky.
"Warn me next time, you jerk!"
"Sorry about that. In a bit of a hurry, we have to meet Turles," Daiz declared.
The blue-haired genius made a face," Well there goes my appetite."
"I seriously doubt you'll refuse indulging in the food offered by this place!"
Bulma screeched as the armored figure holding her suddenly hurtled toward the ground below. He landed smoothly on his feet.
"Oops! I forgot to warn you again!" Turles's second-in-command exclaimed.
A teasing grin lit his face. Bulma was tongue-tied for a moment but quickly composed herself. Why did he have to look at her like that? At that very moment her stomach rumbled loudly causing her to blush furiously. If only she could just disappear! When the space mercenary burst into laughter at her misfortune Bulma gave him one of her signature icy glares.
"Your eyes literally flash sparks when you're angry. No wonder Turles is so fond of goading you, " Daiz commented.
Color suffused Bulma's face once more the Kabochan warrior cleared his throat and turned away. Waving for her to follow he walked up to a sizable non-descript stone building. Daiz threw open a huge wooden door and the bluenette gasped in astonishment as she peered into an elegant dining establishment. When she tried to enter the pirate grasped her left forearm.
"Wait!" he whispered.
Only three patrons were seated at highly polished wooden tables set with exquisite dinnerware that appeared to be fashioned out of shells. The dimly lit room was designed to appear as part of an ocean floor with accents of coral and mother of pearl. A large tank spread throughout the room containing beautiful specimens of aquatic life to further enhance the oceanic theme.
"It seems safe enough. But I'll go in first. Just to make sure," Daiz said as he stepped into the posh eatery. His eyes scanned the room and he kept in front of Bulma.
"You can't be too careful when you're in our line of work," the former royal stated.
"I'M not in YOUR line of work!" Bulma snorted.
"For all practical purposes for the time being you are," the dark green-haired warrior affirmed.
Before she could send back a snappy retort Turles grandly swept into the room. He was followed by Gartoas, Gohan and the Kabochan female.
"So nice of you to decide to join us, Bulma," the Saiyan remarked.
Daiz gave her a warning glance as she bit her lip to keep from uttering her thoughts on the matter. Bulma slipped into the seat the he pointed to. As luck would have it the pirate sat beside her.
Gartoas took the seat across from Daiz after Turles seated himself at the head of the table.
Daiz didn't miss the look of utter disdain Gartoas shot the Kabochan female as she passed his seat on the way towards her own.
"Is there something you'd like to share, Gartoas?"
"Ah don' trust that female!" the Kardanagan grumbled.
"Hmph! You don't trust ANY woman. You wouldn't trust your own mother!" Daiz huffed.
"O' course not! Tha' woman was ah bigger thief than Ah was!" the burly bearded pirate exclaimed.
"Discussing your questionable parentage is hardly appetizing conversation, Gartoas," Turles broke in.
The hefty crewman's face reddened but he kept silent. He glared at Daiz and Gohan as they barely managed to stifle their amusement at Turles's remark.
A small procession of the restaurant's workers carried in tray after tray of delectable offerings that were placed on the table for Turles and those who accompanied him.
Taimaz was totally occupied with gawking at the sheer array of different dishes that set the table. There was enough to feed an army it seemed! She could only begin to imagine the expense of such a repast.
Bulma was pleased as Daiz unexpectedly began to point out dishes she would most likely enjoy. Although she resented the reason behind her presence at the posh eatery's table. The young scientist soon found herself devouring several servings of the luscious food before her.
"Careful Bulma. You wouldn't want to ruin your girlish figure!" Turles teased.
The irate bluenette shoved her plate away from her and folded her arms over her chest with an indignant expression on her face.
"Don't mind him," the Saiyan's second-in -command advised.
He pointed at the wheeled cart a blue toad-like creature was pushing up to the table. Bulma's mouth watered at the sight of heavenly dessert items that covered the cart's surface. She didn't care what Turles thought she was going to sample at least a few of the tempting treats.
Meanwhile Taimaz was simply aghast at the amount of food the two Saiyans were imbibing with gusto. How could anyone manage such quantities of food at a single meal?
"Better get enough to last you 'til the evening meal," Daiz suggested.
"I don't require much unlike others!" Taimas snapped.
"Obviously you mean the Saiyans. They certainly can put it away. You'll get used to it," her fellow Kabochan chuckled.
"Not likely!" the blue and black armored female snorted.
'She's probably just tired," the dark green-haired pirate thought to himself.
Taimaz fought her gnawing hunger pangs until she could no longer resist the tempting aroma of the smorgasbord before her. With a sigh of utter disgust she placed a meager amount of food on her plate and resentfully began to consume it.
"If I refuse to eat then I risk the others becoming suspicious. I've come too far to let my chance to obtain justice for my race and planet slip through my fingers,' the former barkeep thought.
Sure enough, she turned to face him as Daiz tapped her lightly on the shoulder.
"Are you alright, Taimaz? You've barely eaten a thing."
"If the food is not to your liking feel free to request something else," Turles suggested.
"Thank you, Commander but that won't be necessary. I'm just not very hungry," Taimaz spoke up quickly.
"As you wish," the dark-skinned Saiyan replied.
Gartoas gave a snort of annoyance but said nothing. The Kabochan female shot him a fierce glare then kept her gaze on the plate before her.
Turles noticed the exchange immediately but kept his thoughts on the matter to himself. He trusted Daiz and knew that Gartos would be undoubtedly biased against Kabochan woman. But being a master of deceit he knew that people weren't always what they seemed. It was worth keeping an eye on the mysterious female. The pirate commander hadn't taken well to her presence but relented for the sake of his second-in-command. It was almost amusing how the gallant Daiz was always willing to assist a damsel in distrees. Hopefully she would become resentful of life aboard his ship and be on her way.
Though he'd take his own life before he admitted it; seeing a living resemblance to the woman he lost rubbed salt in a wound that refused to heal.
….
Daiz scratched his head in puzzlement as he searched the ship for its commander. There was only one place left..
The Kabochan slipped silently into the room that held the restoration tank that contained the lifeless form of Zailora. A lump formed in his throat as he took in the sight of her. It was quite evident now that she carried the Saiyan's child. The unborn infant was kept alive by the machinery that forced air and nourishment into the deceased female. Floating in the miraculous healing fluid kept her body from decay. He'd never understand how the entire process went about but it was heartbreaking to see the once vibrant beauty practically reduced to a cocoon.
Turles stood in front of the tank with his back to Daiz. His head was bowed and his right hand rested on the cool glass of the tank. The Saiyan's profile was quite visible. A line of moisture trailed down the Saiyan's face. Daiz abruptly hurried from the room brushing at his own eyes he'd let Turles mourn in peace.
Sorrow turned into annoyance as Daiz slammed into the considerable girth of Gartoas.
"Don't you have to orbit around a planet somewhere?"
"Jus' fulla jokes ain't ya? Guess Turles's pinin' over tha woman again, ay?" the Kardanagan mused.
Daiz nodded with a heavy sigh.
"Ifn' thet brat don' survive es' likely ta lose is' mind," Gartoas said flatly.
"I know," his crewmate said in a hollow voice.
Taimaz hurried back to the bridge area before she was discovered by the two male pirates.
Maybe disposing of the evil Saiyan's brat would be just the thing to do….
….
