Chapter Thirty-one: Bucky Take the Wheel
Emma had been telling the truth when she said she trusted Sam. He reminded her of a boy she had a crush on in Kindergarten, not that she had a crush on Sam. There was just something about Sam that told her he was exactly who he said he was: someone who just wanted to help and he did just that. He did more for them then Emma thought he should.
He allowed them into his house, and then offered to help them using his top secret government bird wings. The Falcon, it was called. He went with them to kidnap Jasper Sitwell, who had been on the Lemurian Star and who knew about Zola's algorithm. He revealed to them what was once Natasha kicked him off the roof. It was a program for choosing Insight's targets; now and in the future. Emma wasn't sure that worked. After Insight predicted their future, they started killing people a few million at a time. There was that cold feeling again and it traveled throughout her entire body.
Insight was launching in 16 hours so they need to be quick about stopping it. Unfortunately they had to take Sitwell with them but luckily Natasha had moved to position herself between Emma and Sitwell. The few times that Emma had come across Sitwell he always appeared to be a nice guy but she also always thought there was something off about him. She thought that of him and Alexander Pierce. She thought they were like anyone working for SHIELD and chosen to keep everything close to the vest. She supposed that was how they fooled everyone.
They had been planning on using Sitwell to bypass the DNA scans but unfortunately, it did not work out like that. The Winter Soldier had other plans. The man had literally gotten the jump on them by landing on top of the car and pulling Sitwell out through the window. It took Emma a second to register what the hell just happened. It was safe to say that Sitwell probably didn't survive being thrown off the damn bridge.
"Holy shit!" Emma exclaimed.
"Language!" Steve and Natasha said in unison.
She stared at them like they had two heads. Did they actually forget that they weren't actually her parents or the fact that she was an adult? Also, is that really something they should be focused on right now? Emma couldn't ponder any further as the Winter Soldier began shooting at the both of them. Natasha was forced to jump into Steve's lap while jumped into Sam's. Steve put the car into park suddenly causing the Soldier to fall off of the car but he landed gracefully much like a cat. If it were the Olympics of falling of cars the Winter Soldier would have won the gold medal. They were staring in awe when they got rammed by a car and once again, the Soldier was on the roof. He was like the cat wouldn't stay away.
The bastard punched through the roof and ripped out the damn steering wheel. There was no fucking way to drive the car now. If Steve and Natasha wouldn't let her curse out loud she was going to do so in her own damn head. Good thing they weren't full fledged betzazoids. The next thing she knew the car was being flipped and they were sledding down the road on a car door thanks to Steve's quick thinking. Emma and Sam ended up rolling off the door away from the others.
The Winter Soldier blew Steve off the bridge then went after the others. Natasha ducked behind one car with Emma, overnight her as she did so, while Sam hid behind another car. At one point, Natasha and Emma ended up getting separated from Sam while the Winter Soldier chased them down. Natasha managed to fool the soldier with a recording device. Natasha had told Emma to hide while she went Black Widow on the soldier's ass, wrapping her legs around his neck.
When Natasha got shot Emma couldn't stay hidden for long and came running out with Steve. They fought side by side to take down the Winter Soldier. He got the upper hand on the both of them by grabbing Emma around the throat with his metal arm. He lifted her up off the ground and held her there. He held her tightly enough to make her uncomfortable but not enough to cut off her air supply. He sent a warning glare to Steve that if he tried anything he would kill her. Her eyes caught the soldier's and as she gazed into his familiar blue eyes, his own softened.
"Penny," the Winter Soldier whispered.
"Why?" she asked as his hands tightened around her throat then he dropped her.
Steve took up the fight with the soldier again as Emma lay on the ground, coughing. The fight intensified and the Winter Soldier almost got him a couple of times until Steve grabbed him backwards by the face. His mask fell onto the ground and he turned around, revealing his face. Steve and Emma froze as they gazed into the face of Bucky Barnes.
"Bucky?" Steve asked in shock.
"Who the hell is Bucky?" he asked.
