CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
12x11 Surface Tension
JJ turned back to stare out into the dark night sky. She had been watching Emily fill out paperwork at her usual unrelenting pace. If she could get through the stack by the time they landed, she and JJ could go home together. Judging by her intense look of concentration, Emily was highly motivated to make it happen. JJ left her alone, sitting on the couch across from her. She had a lot on her mind anyway - and a horrible feeling brewing in her gut. It was her intuition. About Spencer. And she hadn't had the chance to talk to Emily about it yet.
David walked casually down the center aisle of the plane. JJ spotted the drink in his hand immediately.
"Hey, can I try a sip?" She asked, running a hand behind her neck. Dave looked back at her with raised eyes and a slight smirk, before handing over the glass.
"Help yourself."
"I'm a white wine kind of gal, but…" She smiled mischievously and took a sip. "Whoo, yeah, that just woke up my back molars, thank you."
"Like the best things in life, an acquired taste." David smiled, raising the glass in a sort of toast.
JJ smiled but it didn't reach her eyes. She dropped her gaze to the floor and rubbed her neck a little. She looked sad - maybe a little worried. David stayed quiet, inviting JJ to speak.
"Do you think Spence is making a mistake bringing his mom home?"
"It's hard to say. Not long ago I told him he shouldn't waste the precious time he has left with her. I guess he took it to heart."
"I worry about him, you know?"
"Yeah, it'll be fine. If it proves too difficult, he'll adjust."
"I just have a bad feeling…"
"About what?" Dave asked. He looked cautiously interested.
"I don't even know. I can't put my finger on it."
"JJ, we have enough problems in this life that are real and present. Let's not bring imagined ones to the table, too." He smiled comfortingly.
JJ's eyes couldn't help but drift to her wife. She was still leaning over the papers in front of her, completely in her own world. She evidently didn't hear any of her conversation with David. JJ conceded, allowing herself to let go a little. She wanted to take Dave's advice - mostly because she wanted his words to be true.
"Okay. I will drink to that." Dave reached across the aisle, offering her his drink again. She frowned, holding up her hand, "Oh, in spirit," she said with a chuckle.
