"Time travel?" Barbara had slowly inched away from Captain Carter as the scientist in the military-woman-clothing was almost salivating after the resident Linguist had translated what she had said.
"Yes? Mind you, I don't know the technology nor the mechanism behind it. I remember it was connected to the sun…" Barbara had joined Carter together with Dr. Jackson several hours after their meeting with General Hammond. It was decided that they will try more methods to wake the girl or try and find other methods to return the girl back to her reality, but for now Barbara had volunteered to provide whatever information she could remember. And now she sent Carter on a mumble spree as the scientist tried to think of a possible explanation.
"What had gotten into her?" the familiar drawl of O'Neill from the door was heard as he entered the laboratory. He was accompanied by Tea'lc.
"Barbara had suggested the availability of time travel with the Stargate, and this happened," Daniel waved his hand towards the blond woman and the girl who kept moving away from the excited scientist.
"And I had recently was tasked to do research on the applicability of time travel with the Stargate! If what Barbara just said then I definitely have to find a way, or will find a way!"
"Well, that's good. Well, we have a debrief that we have. P… P something," stammered O'Neill on the name of the planet.
"It's P2X-555, O'Neill," interjected Tea'lc.
"Good for you. Do I have to be baby-sitted? Like, don't you have any other things to do?" Barbara had found herself near Dr. Jackson as she peered at Colonel. And then she had switched her attention onto Tea'lc. "I have to ask, does the larvae just sit there, or does it constantly slither in its pocket? Does it feel like a pregnant lady's stomach with constant movement?"
Tea'lc didn't respond to the onslaught of questions in any other way than an elevated eyebrow but that was enough for Jack to turn to his team's linguist. "Daniel, this is you queue to find this young lady something fun and quiet to do."
"But I…"
"Right, I'll take her," murmured Daniel and gently herded the young girl out of the lab towards his own.
"Almost there, sir. This time of year, the direct line between P2X-555 and the Earth takes us within 70,000 miles of the sun. I have to update the computer's drift calculation to include gravitational space/time warping," explained Carter over a microphone. She was standing in the Control room, adding final touches to her calculation. Barbara was standing next to her, peering at the team standing below in the Gate room.
"We know that. Let's go!" answered her O'Neill after a beat and turning back to Daniel.
As Carter finished her calculations Barbara tapped Carter's shoulder.
"Yes Barbara?" the girl quickly mimics a sun, holding both hands in the shape of a ball, and a flare with her right hand rising in a wavy pattern. "I don't think I understand the first a=nor the second signs, but something wavy rising?"
The girl rolled her eyes preparing to try again, but at this moment General Hammond entered the control room going straight to Carter.
"How's the hand?" reaching down he takes and inspects Carter's hand. It has a nasty gash that has been stitched and taped but it looks inflamed.
"It's a little sore, but it'll be all right. Thank you." In the background, one of the technicians announced encodement of the first Chevron.
Hammond hummed approvingly and then held a small yellow piece of paper, folded in half. "I'd like you to take this note along with you. Keep it in your vest pocket until you get on the other side. It's fairly self-explanatory," he handed the note to the captain.
"Sir, is everything all right?" Carter couldn't help herself but ask, as the General was acting a bit stranger than usual.
"Everything's fine. Time to ship out, Captain," nodded Hammond and Carter put the note in the vest pocket. She then waved the girl and went down to join her team in the Gate Room.
As soon as the Gate was dialed, and the team went through it Barbara turned to the General. Folding her hands on the chest she smirked at him. As soon as he smiled at her she huffed shaking her head in disbelief.
"Don't smirk at me like this, young Lady. It wasn't me who just tried to help the team by obscure signs. Don't think I didn't see you," the girl huffed at General's reply before turning back to the gate, worry clearly seen in her eyes. "They will be fine." And privately he added, they should.
The team had arrived at a room that for the first minute was a copy of the Gate Room before fading into an active testing site of a rocket. They had managed to survive the "fake" testing and soon were led to a holding cell.
"I'm fairly certain that we've traveled back in time, roughly about thirty years," Carter started deep in thought. As she had gained O'Neill's attention she had continued. "For a second or two, I think we were in both time-frames simultaneously, which is why the Stargate seemed to be there one minute and was gone the next."
"Little bump in the calculations, Captain?" inquired O'Neill.
"I'm sorry, sir. I don't know what to say," apologized Carter.
Barbara has taken to sitting in the briefing room. An open book and a handheld device Dr. Jackson has set her up with in hopes that she will be able to translate him some of the documents from the Ancients were left on the table. Right now, the young woman was overlooking the Gate room. She didn't really have a timetable how the events were unfolding. She aggressively rubbed her eyes. She was so ready to start climbing the walls just to scratch that itch and try and dial the gate herself, even though she knew nothing will come of it). She couldn't really focus on the translations.
"Still no sign of SG-1, sir. They never made it to P2X-555," a technician jogged up the stairs to inform General Hammond who had just stepped out of his office.
"Very well. SG-5 will have to complete their mission," the General had acknowledged the information.
"If I may ask, sir… what are we going to do about SG-1?"
"They're out there somewhere. Hopefully, they'll find their way back," the general hummed
"They will get back here. They are smart. You did give Captain Carter the paper with the sun flare dates. Even two of them," responded Barbara, unsticking her focus from the Gate and looking at the military men.
"Barbara, neither of us speak the Ancient," responded Hammond after a few seconds. The young woman huffed, swiping the handheld device, and furiously typing on it. She couldn't even grab the paper with a pen or pencil as whatever she wrote was registering for everybody else in the language of Ancients. The only way she could try and communicate with non-speakers was to use a computer keyboard. She shoved the device into the General's hands.
As the team goes through the forest trying to get to the interstate road O'Neill forces the team to stop as they ponder the contents of the note.
"'Help them. August 10th, 9:15 A.M., August 11th, 6:03 P.M.' That's helpful," O'Neill hands over the note to Daniel.
"Well, I suppose he had to be intentionally cryptic so as not to risk changing his own history
"August 10th…that's cryptic," O'Neill lets out a laugh.
"Well, wait a second, it just means that on August 10th at 9:15 A.M., something is going to happen," Dr. Jackson tried to calm his friend down.
"And happen again the next day at 6:03. We just have to figure out what that something is," tackled on Sam. And then she had remembered something. "Before we left, I think Barbara was trying to tell me something, but I am a bit unsure of what that was."
"Sun Flare!" crowed together Jackson and Carter. Then the scientist of the group had continued, "What if a massive solar flare just happened to occur at the exact moment that we were traveling between Earth and another Stargate? If the wormhole itself was redirected closer to the sun because of the Earth's magnetic field, the increased gravity could slingshot us back to Earth."
"Okay, geek later. We need to catch ourselves a car. We have two dates so we can check it out to see if the hint and the dates work out," O'Neill, with a small jump in his step continued towards the road. His teammates followed as they exchanged small smiles.
Barbara had almost thrown the book she was trying to translate at the wall as the sirens came to life. She took a quick peek into the Gate room and as if her thoughts were confirmed it had established a connection. She raced downstairs to the control room.
"Incoming traveler, sir. It's SG-1," the surprised technician informs Hammond as he enters the control room.
"Open the iris."
Hammond quickly goes to the Gate room, Barbara on his heels. They both enter the room as SG-1 steps through the wormhole.
"Yes! We're home thanks to one sparky young Lieutenant Hammond," O'Neill snaps a half-salute to Hammond as the team descends the ramp.
"And a very nice hint from Barbara," Jackson nods his thanks to the young woman. She merrily smiles at him.
"How did you know, sir?"
"When I was a young lieutenant, I was ordered to escort four people out of Cheyenne Mountain. In the vest pocket of one, I found a note with my name on it. Needless to say, I followed its instructions, "Hammond answers. And when asked about how he knew to time his note he adds with a grin on his face, "Not until I saw the cut on your hand. Remember when I took your cuffs off."
"Hey, did you get to see Cassandra, or did you actually manage to get on time through the Gate?"
"We have seen Cassandra," brows furrowed answers her Jackson. "Do you know what she meant by 'your journey's just beginning'?"
Barbara shrugs her shoulders, a soft smile on her lips as she turns away to collect her things from the Briefing room.
