CH 96
Over the six week patrol, the crew kept busy attending May Day calls and chasing
FFV.
One day MacGyver walked up on the bridge looking sad and upset.
"MacGyver, are you ok?" Two Dads asked while the bridge crew looked on.
"I received an email from Doctor Wallace. Rose, the little girl, passed away this morning after a seizure caused by the tumor" Everyone was shocked as they remembered the little girl.
"How's her mum doing?" Kate asked.
"Not good. Her health has deteriorated in the past month."
"Any news about the court case against Braxton Mining?" RO asked.
"There's good news. Because it was in the papers, a group of Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd lawyers offered to be their lawyers for only a small fee. Five percent will be donated to Sea Shepards and Greenpeace."
"That's great," Bird said.
"The case starts next week. The lawyers have copies of everything, so there's plenty of evidence."
"Won't we have to testify?" Two Dads asked.
"If we did, we would've gotten word about it weeks ago."
"Good point," Mike said.
It was afternoon when they returned to Cairns, and the crew was looking forward to shore leave. MacGyver was in the galley when her phone rang.
"June Roth, hello?"
"June, it's John Wallace."
"Hi John, you sound happy."
"You have no idea. We won!"
"That's wonderful news!"
"Thanks to you, June."
"That is great news. So some of the Hammersley crew didn't need to testify."
"No, with all of the evidence from the water and fish samples, video footage, and reports, it was enough."
"That's great news."
"Yes, it is. Braxton Mining was fined eight hundred million dollars for dumping toxic waste. The remaining families on Stroke island will get two billion dollars split between them."
MacGyver was shocked. "Oh my…. That might just about bankrupt them."
"Not quite. Everyone on Stoke Island agreed with the five percent donation."
"That is great news."
"Yes, it is. And the toxin levels are almost gone, but we were told it is unsafe to fish for ten years. Fishing will be banned for ten years."
"I understand." They talked for another minute before hanging up.
June walked out of the galley and up to the bridge, where she used the PA system to share the good news. Everyone is pleased that it is over and that the Braxton Mining Co will pay a heavy price for what they have been doing for years.
When Hammersley docks, the crew's looking forward to their shore leave. When June saw Jim that night, he walked into the kitchen for a hug and kiss. She told him the news.
"That is great news after what they all been through."
"True. How was work?"
"Busy with this terrorist thing."
"I hope it will end soon."
"Same here" They enjoyed their time together when June got shore leave, and Jim was not out on a mission or training.
A Month later, Hammersley was tasked to help Madeline Cruise once again. They head to a rendezvous point where they wait for over three and a half hours for four men to show up. One of the men showed up running onto the beach waving his arms around.
"That's Agent Smith," Madeline said.
"Where're the others?" Mike asked as shooting erupted from the bushes.
"X! Go in and get Agent Smith!"
"Yes, Sir!" They went in, Kate gave the code word, and Agent Smith replied with his word.
"Quickly" Kate yelled. He ran and jumped into the RHIB. "Go! Go! Go!" Kate called out.
The RHIB turned and headed back to Hammersley. When they were on board, Hammersley headed back to Cairns. When MacGyver managed to see where wounds were on the agent's arm.
"Agent Smith…"
"What?" he said, snapping at her. "Sorry."
"You're going into shock, Sir. Come with me to the wardroom so I can clean up your arm wound."
"What?" then he noticed the blood on his arm. "I'll see your doctor if you've got one on board."
"I'm a qualified medic, Sir."
"Alright."
Macgyver took her gear off and passed them to Dutchy. "This way, Sir," showing him to the wardroom.
"Now, get on the bed and lay down," MacGyver ordered as she went and got what she needed from the cupboard.
She put the gloves on, and Agent Smith closed his eyes while she cleaned his wound. Then the door suddenly banged open, causing the agent to jump and knock the stuff MacGyver had on the bed onto the floor. MacGyver turned to see who had just barged in. It was Madeline Cruise. Taking her gloves off, she stepped forward.
"I want to see Agent Smith." Ms. Cruise demanded.
"You can bloody wait, Ms. Cruise. I'm dealing with his wound first. You'll have to wait till I'm finished. And don't you dare come barging in here like that ever again! You knock and wait for an answer. Now get out!" MacGyver said angrily.
"MacGyver, what's all the yelling about?" Mike asked.
"Sir, Ms. Cruise came barging into the wardroom demanding to see Agent Smith. At present, I was treating his arm wound where he was shot. Until I'm finished cleaning and dressing his wound, she can wait, Sir. Now, if you'll excuse me, Sir, I've got work to do." She stood back and closed the door.
She turned back to the agent, who was still lying down, picked up the stuff from the floor, put them in a bag, and then started all over again.
"You sure put her in her place. I hope you don't get into trouble with the captain."
MacGyver smiled. "Na, the Captain, knows I'm right. There are rules when you're walking through the wardroom; you gotta knock fist. Gee, you could have been shot in the ass. Imagine the sight she would have seen if she came barging in here then."
He laughed. "It would have been shocking. I understand where you're coming from. So, Roth, you're not June Roth by any chance, Jim's wife?"
"You know my husband, Sir?"
"Yeah. We met yesterday; he's a great bloke. He said to me if I were to see you on Hammersley, to tell my wife I miss her."
MacGyver smiled. "I miss him too."
"He also said to show you this" he pulled out a pen drive from his pocket.
"Do you know what's on it?"
"Terrorist activities; it's encrypted. He said to show it to you and then to give it to Ms. Cruise."
"Ok."
"You know something?"
"No, I don't, but there might be something on there he wants me to know about."
"You don't have clearance."
"I do; look, give it to Ms. Cruise, ok?"
"Alright. You are good at what you do."
"Thank you."
"Jim's one lucky guy."
"Yes, he is. Can you tell me what happened with the mission?"
"Everything was going to plan. I met up with Jim, he gave me two pen drives. He said for me to give you one and give the other one to Ms. Cruise. Only tell you that there are two pen drives. I contacted Madeline Cruise, and she told me and the three others to meet on the beach at a certain time. We were on our way back when all hell broke loose. They were waiting for us. They knew we were going to be on that beach at that time. We fell into their trap. The other three died. I pretended to be dead. I saw them going through the pockets of the others. I saw one of them holding up a pen drive like the one I got. Then they left. I should have waited longer. But I…."
"You went into shock, and you wanted to get the hell out of there."
"Yeah, so I got up and ran. They saw me running and chased me to the beach. The radio was no good; it was shot to pieces."
"You are safe now, and we're on our way home." MacGyver finished up.
"There, it's all done."
"Thanks," he sat up. MacGyver went to the cupboard and got a couple of antibiotic tablets.
"Oh, no…"
"Sir, it's to stop an infection from setting in since we don't know what sort of bullets they were or where they have been."
"Alright." She passed them to him along with a bottle of water. He drank the whole bottle and had the tablets. "Thanks, shame it's nothing stronger."
"Sorry, the only thing we've got that is strong is coffee. Sorry, no rum on board."
"Shame," he laughed at her rum joke. "Very funny."
"With what you told me about what Jim said to you about the two pen drives and the fact that the rebels searching the pockets, they must have known about them since that is what they were looking for."
"Are you thinking that Ms. Cruise sold the three SAS agents and me out? Why?"
"Whatever's on that pen drive, she doesn't want anyone to know."
"But why do I have to give it to her? She would either keep the drive or have the information sent to her computer or ACIO."
MacGyver smiled. "She will have to wait till tomorrow."
"Why?"
"We are on communication lockdown till further notice. So if she wants the information sent, she'll have to wait till the lockdown is lifted."
"She won't be happy."
"I know. Let's get you a rack where you can sleep."
"Thanks, June." They opened the door to see and Mike there as they left the wardroom. He was just about to knock on the door.
"Sir"
"I want to see Agent Smith now!" Madeline barked.
"No!" Macgyver said, folding her arms in front of her.
"Captain, tell your medic to step aside."
MacGyver looked at Mike.
"MacGyver, can she see him?"
"All right, she can, Sir, but" then she looked at Madeline, "Next time you come on this ship, bring your manners with you, Ms. Cruise" She stepped back and let Mike and Ms. Cruise into the wardroom.
"Have you got it?"
He pulled out the pen drive and gave it to her. She turned to Mike, "Give this to your RO and tell him to send it at once to my office," She walked out the door. MacGyver steps outside to see that she's gone then turns to Mike and Agent Smith.
"What a cold bitch, Sir."
"MacGyver…"
"It's true, Sir. I'll talk to you later. Agent Smith, feeling hungry?"
"Yeah, I am."
"Come on, let me whip something up for you, Sir."
"Thank you."
"Sir…" She says to Mike.
"MacGyver…" They went their separate directions.
MacGyver whipped up a cheese and onion omelet and a hot chocolate for the agent. He enjoyed it
"That was amazing. How did you make the eggs so light and fluffy?"
"I lightly beat eggs by hand as you saw."
"You did well."
"Thank you."
After he finished his meal and MacGyver did the dishes, she showed him where he could rest.
Then she went and knocked on the comcen door. RO opened it and let MacGyver in. She closed the door. "Here," he passes her the pen drive.
"Thanks. Have you sent it?"
"Nope," MacGyver grinned, "communication lockout?"
"Yep, for another twenty-four hours."
"What a shame," she said, smiling as she opened her laptop and put the pen drive in. Opening the drive, she finds that it is encrypted. So she copied the file and put it on her portable hard drive, then she removed the pen drive and passed it back to RO. Then she went through her encryption programs and opened it up.
"Oh. My. God!"
"What is it?"
"It's a list of names and locations of terrorists, weapons, and who they're connected to."
"That's good, isn't it?"
"Look at these locations… around the islands like Samurai Island and others. Something's not right." She did some typing, and then the dots appeared on a map.
"Why these islands? What is so important about these islands?"
"Perhaps the terrorist's home base is there."
"Who knows. Oh my God."
"What is it?"
"One of the names… I know him. He is ex-navy. He retired on medical grounds. He is not a terrorist; in fact, he has been helping me locate special boxes. Get the CO in here. I think these are a hit list."
Shocked, RO picked up the phone and asked Mike to come down to the comcen.
When mike walked in. "RO, can you step out, please."
"Sure," then he walked out, closing the door.
"MacGyver?"
"You better sit down, Sir." He sat down, and she showed him what was on the pen drive.
"Is it a terrorist list?"
"No, it's a hit list. I recognized one of them; he's ex-navy, retired on medical grounds. He was helping me find the whereabouts of a boat that got the cases on them. He was able to tell me that the boat had arrived, but the cases were put on an island, although he doesn't know which one."
"When can you find out who these others are?"
"Let's start from the first one and google him and see what we get. We are just in range, so I'll use my own internet."
MacGyver did the first guy; there was nothing on him, so she did some more. They learn that two are EX SAS, three are Navy, and others are businessmen with business in Afghanistan and East Asia.
"This is interesting… they all have been or have connections to Afghanistan."
"But what about the ex-navy and SAS?"
"My best guess is that they served over there at one point in time. If they had served together on a mission, something must have happened cause someone over there wanted these men dead" Then she did some more typing for a couple of minutes.
"Bingo, the two men were from a team over in Afghanistan. The three ex-navy are from the shore party that went in to help rescue them… oh my… I remember that mission. The SAS was pinned down, and a group of navy went to shore and took out the rebels and returned with the SAS group."
"How do you know this?"
"I was on that shore party, Sir. But how the hell did this information get out. Sir, the SAS mission and the rescue mission are classified. No one except for the high-ranking officers knows about it. And now, someone leaked the names of five of those men from that mission. Sir, you better call fleet command about this. Tell Captain Thomas to tell the fleet's admiral that operation stardust has been compromised. He would know what it means"
"We are on lockdown."
"Except for emergencies. He's got to know, Sir, and find out what happened to the others and where they are."
"Ok, I'll make the call."
"Sir, Jim told Agent Smith to show me the pen drive. When he did, Jim must have known the SAS men on the list and wanted me to find out if they were terrorists or on the hit list."
"Thanks for telling me, MacGyver."
"Tell Captain Thomas I'm emailing the list to him; hopefully, he can find out more about these men on the list."
Mike stood up and walked to the door, opened it, and walked out, and RO walked in just as MacGyver sent the email with a message to Captain Thomas.
"Everything alright?"
"No, but it will be in time." She closed her laptop and left to return to her cabin when she heard over the PA system about the storm they were heading into.
