The next day, the ring had informed them that the past life Hermione had experienced was King Arthur's, and that it was Guinevere who was put under the Bringer of Sorrows' curse. Upon further research, they found that only those who presented as an omega were affected by the Bringer of Sorrows' song.
"This makes things difficult. We're going to have to find a way to keep you from hearing the Bringer of Sorrows' song so that you won't fall into a coma. I wish that we knew what to look for with this, and how to help those who do succumb to the song. So far, nothing that we've found says whether they were able to wake them or not," Hermione said, frustrated, as she leaned back in her chair and pinched the bridge of her nose.
Narcissa took off her glasses and began to rub her temples when suddenly, a patronus of a stag came bounding into the library. It trotted in front of both women and began to speak in Harry's voice.
"Something is wrong with Andromeda. You need to come quickly!" The patronus dissipated into a mist after relaying the message. The women looked at one another in shock. Narcissa stood to leave, but Hermione grabbed her wrist, stopping her.
"Wait, we don't know what's going on. For all we know, she could be the first victim of the Bringer of Sorrows' song and it's not safe for you to leave until we know how to keep you from falling victim to it," Hermione said with concern in her voice.
Narcissa huffed in annoyance. "She couldn't have fallen victim to the song because she's not an omega, she's a beta. Like Bella. I need to see her because she's my sister, and even though we aren't as close as we once were, that doesn't mean I don't still love her and want her safe," she yanked her arm away from Hermione and began to walk away again, only to have Hermione follow her and grab her arm again, halting her once more.
"That doesn't mean that something else isn't at play here. We don't really know if the trials will start in the order the ring tells us or if they're just random. Please, Narcissa. I can't risk losing you like this. I'll check on her and come straight back here after I find out what's going on. Can you be okay with that and promise me that you will continue to look for a solution to our problem for the Bringer of Sorrows? Honestly, I'm not even sure I want to know what the other trial will be, let alone how we're going to deal with The Bard of Chaos. Especially if it is like you say, and it turns into a demon Pied Piper," Hermione said worriedly.
Narcissa sighed in defeat and nodded. "Fine. I'll continue our search. Although I'm not sure what good it will do when we've scoured every inch of this library on the matter. We might have to outsource from other places for more information. Hhmm...I could always look in the vaults for more books; although, I'm not sure if there are any on this matter there, but it's worth a look," Narcissa said.
Hermione agreed that she should check the Black family vaults, but that she needed to use extreme caution when going. Hermione gave her the Ring of Knowledge as well as the Necklace of Protection then used the floo to go to Andromeda's house to see what was going on.
Green flames burst from the floo and Hermione walked out of it to see Harry sitting next to Andromeda, who seemed fine. "What happened?" Hermione asked as she walked over and sat in a chair across from them.
"I came over to drop Teddy off since I had him today. When I got here, I found her passed out on the couch. It took a while to wake her, but now that she's awake, she doesn't seem quite like herself," Harry said in a panic. Hermione looked at Andromeda and then saw something on the table in front of them.
"Harry, what is that piece of parchment?" Hermione asked.
Harry looked down at the parchment. "I'm not sure, I found it on the floor by her hand. It only says one word on it: 'sorrow' and I'm not really sure what that means," he said as he continued to try getting Andromeda to come back to herself.
Hermione cast a Wingardium Leviosa and floated the letter over to her, then held it suspended in the air in front of her. Not wanting to touch it just yet, she began to run every single one of her known diagnostic spells on the letter. Especially since she suspected the letter had been tampered with, and someone had made it to curse whomever opened the letter.
"Harry, this letter has been tampered with. I think she's been cursed by something. Although, at the moment, I'm not exactly sure what," as she spoke, she levitated the letter back onto the table and then began to cast diagnostic spells on Andromeda, trying to get an understanding of what was happening to the second eldest Black sister. The diagnostic spells told her that there was nothing wrong with her physically, but there was something that was not quite right with her mentally. Hermione ran some more refined spells to test her mental state, trying to narrow down what could be going on with Andromeda. After a few spells, she stopped and gasped as she realized what was wrong with her.
"What? What did you find, Hermione?" Harry asked with panic in his voice.
Hermione cast one more spell to confirm what she thought was the problem with her, only to find out that her theory was correct. "She's been possessed by something malevolent, and I have a pretty good idea of what it is. But as of this moment, I'm not sure how to get rid of it," Hermione said as she leaned back into her chair with a sigh.
"What do you mean she's possessed and you think you know what it is, but not how to help her?! Hermione, what have you been getting into here lately?" Harry asked as he stood up and walked over to stand next to Hermione.
Hermione sighed once more and looked up at Harry. "I was assigned a relic retrieval mission at Stonehenge a few months ago and found out that there are bigger things that are beginning to come into play here in the near future, far worse than anything we've ever faced before. That's including anything we've had to deal with as children," she pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration as she tried to think of what she could do for Andromeda until she could find the spell she would need to dispel the malevolent entity from her.
Harry looked at her in shock at the information. "What could possibly be worse than what we went through during the war?"
Hermione looked up at him and sighed. "Demonic trials, to put it simply. I was informed recently that there is a prophecy of three coming trials of chaos and death that, if not dealt with, will bring a demon lord to this plane of existence who will destroy the world. So yes, the upgraded versions of what we faced as children. Almost sounds like old times, doesn't it?" She said sarcastically. "Where is Teddy, by the way?" She looked up at Harry who had now started to pace in thought and anxiety.
He looked over at her, expression worried. "I had to send him over to The Burrow since I wasn't sure what was wrong with Andy. They'll protect him if anything happens. So, do you think that one of the trials that you were told about came in the form of possession? If so, how do we get rid of it without hurting Andy? I can't imagine that the process will be pleasant, let alone easy," he said as he started to pace once more, anxiety rolling off of him in waves.
Hermione stood up and put her hands on his shoulders to stop him, as well as try to expel some of his anxious energy. "I have some thoughts as to what we should do for this, but it requires time to get the answers I need. Your pacing is not helping anything right now. Although, if it's any consolation, you're not the chosen one this time," she joked with a shy smile.
He looked at her in disbelief. "That isn't really helpful, Hermione. I don't care who the chosen one is. I care that, once again, some outside force is causing our friends to suffer. But since you've brought it up, who is the chosen one to defeat this great evil?" He crossed his arms over his chest and looked at her sternly.
"Weirdly enough, Narcissa and I are the ones that will be in the line of fire for the trials. We found out yesterday at Stonehenge. We've been researching it as best we can, but we've run into a wall with finding information on the subject, even with all the books that Black Manor has to offer. Narcissa is going to Gringotts to see if she can find anything there that might help with this. Although, if the first trial deals with possessing people, we may have to branch out to other practitioners for help with research because England isn't exactly full of helpful material on possession that doesn't involve the Catholic's way of dealing with it," Hermione said as she looked sadly at Andromeda.
Harry looked at her confused. "I take it that it doesn't end well if we were to take that route. What do we do for this?"
Hermione sighed and ran her hand through her hair. "We're going to have to lock her up somewhere so that she can't hurt anyone. Somewhere with a soundproof room as well, so no one can hear her."
Harry opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by Hermione. "Trust me when I tell you that it has to be a soundproof room otherwise—"
As they were talking, Andromeda's eyes swirled completely black. She stood up from the couch and apparated away with a loud crack.
They turned around at the sound and both groaned in frustration. "Odin help me. We need to find her quickly before whatever is inside of her causes catastrophic problems. You need to send out Aurors that are betas to find her, because I'm not completely sure who would be safe from whatever is using her body right now. As for me, I need to find Narcissa and keep her safe from her sister, as well as look into safe ways to extract that thing from her," Hermione stated. They nodded to each other as they apparated out of Andromeda's house to where they needed to be.
