And I know a boy who's broken every vow he's made
Who's spoken every callous phrase
But he can listen like a rainy day and drown it out

Clara looked around at the preparations that were going on. Preparations for her wedding. She appreciated the help everyone was so willing to do. Peter and she hadn't had an elaborate ceremony. They had kept things simple and she was okay with that.
She wanted this time to be different and not just so she got the things she missed out on before. She wanted it different so that it was her and Jesse's day. She didn't want ghosts from the past marring her new memories.
Sometimes though, she wondered if that was right or not.
"Miss?"
The softly spoken question brought Clara from her thoughts to find Constable Grant standing in front of her. The look of concern on the Mountie's face was apparent.
"Are you alright?" Constable Grant ask, seeing that he now how Clara's attention. "You looked far away there."
Clara smiled. "I'm fine," she assured him, touched by his genuine concern. "I was just lost in thought. I'm realizing that Jesse is nothing like my first husband."
"That's not necessary a bad thing."
"True," Clara agreed. "Though some people might think it was. Jesse's had a colorful past," she said, realizing that she was talking to one of the few people who might not know everything about the man she was going to marry. "He's had his trouble with the law."
Nathan reached up and rubbed his jaw. "That I'm aware of," he said lightly.
Clara smiled herself. Jesse hadn't made the best first impression with Constable Grant. "But he's changed and he's been nothing but kind to me. Yes, he has his faults but he's a good person. He's just nothing like the man I use to dream about marrying."
"Sometimes what we want changes as we change."
Clara nodded in agreement. "That's true," she commented. She felt the heat rise in her cheeks as she realized she was pouring her heart out to Constable Grant, whom she'd had little interaction with since he came into town. "But you probably don't want to hear this and I'm probably keeping you from something."
"Sometimes, being a sounding board ends up being a public service," Nathan told her.
Clara laughed feeling a little bit more at ease. "I should be going though," she added. "Thank-you for listening to me babble," she added, standing on tip toe to give the Mountie a quick kiss on the cheek before heading on her way.
