AN: So this would take place after "New Possibilities". Just an added little scene.

On a Sunday, near September

Where you woke surprised to remember

How the light attaches to a change of heart

What was simple, now there's questions

The kind that I don't look my best in

And the ghost of me will keep us far apart

-Marianas Trench "The Death Of Me"

"You matter to me."

It was hardly a declaration of love. Yet someone it touched her more than all of Lucas' sweet words. Nor was it one of Jack's grand gestures. But it was honest and sweet.

Elizabeth picked up a picture of Jack. She still missed him. She knew she always would. However, he couldn't be with her. Jack wouldn't want her to go through life longing for what use to be. What could've been. Even if he hadn't told her to open her heart to love again, Elizabeth would know that was what he would want.

But it was still scary and confusing.

A hand on her shoulder brought Elizabeth out of her thoughts with a gasp and a jump.

"Sorry," Bill said from beside her. "Are you okay? I saw a light still on, and then I knocked a few times and didn't get an answer so I came in."

"I'm fine," Elizabeth said. "Just lost in thought."

"Really lost in thought from the look of it," Bill commented, glancing at the other photo's on the table.

Elizabeth looked over and gave him a weak smile as she placed the photo back.

"You know having feelings for Nathan is not a betrayal to Jack."

Elizabeth opened her mouth to protest but stopped when she recognized the knowing look Bill was giving her.

"I can tell, Elizabeth. I think a lot of us see it."

"How can I fall for another Mountie, Bill?" Elisabeth asked, walking over to the settee and sitting down.

"I think you already have," Bill told her. "You just don't want to admit it out of fear. Which I understand, but don't settle for someone else just because you feel he's the safe choice."

"Who says I'd be settling?" Elizabeth tried to protest.

Bill just shot her another knowing look as he headed for the door. "It's late. I'll be heading home now that I know you're okay."

"Bill, who do you think is a better fit for me?" Elizabeth asked, as Bill reached for the doorknob.

"I don't think it's my place to say," Bill said, glancing back at her.

"I'm asking," Elizabeth replied. "When I asked you not to investigate the flowers, you did anyway, so I think you owe me a reply now."

"Was I too obvious?"

Elizabeth laughed. "They both gave me flowers after you talked to them."

"Oops," Bill replied. "In that case let me give you this perspective. Lucas is flashy. Generous at times, yes but he's use to having things a certain way. If he had ended up in Hope Valley with nothing but the clothes on his back, I think he'd head home to an easier life."

"Unlike me."

"Unlike you," Bill agreed. "Nathan is steady. He's genuine. He might have trouble expressing himself with words, but you can still pretty much figure out where he's going to stand on most subjects. Plus, he's already proven he'll love a child under his care like they were his own. What you need to figure out is which kind of man you would rather spend your life with. I can tell you which one Jack would have chosen for you," he told her and the slipped from the little home before Elizabeth could say anything else.
