I never cared how I dressed before

But I cared that night

Anticipation ran through my bones

And my clothes never fit right

I can't wait 'til we meet again

-New Found Glory "I Don't Wanna Know"

She had never fussed too much over what was fashionable. She had simply dressed as those around her did. She hadn't felt special. Her clothes seemed normal and functional.

Here in Coal Valley they just seemed showy.

She was an outsider here in this little mining town. Her clothes, which had helped her to blend in while living in Hamilton, only labeled her as such here in Coal Valley.

Her short time here had opened her eyes to how much she really did have. She had grown up sheltered by loving parents. She had been giving material things that she had taken for granted. Even with the few things that she had brought with her on this teaching assignment, she had more than may of the people in this town.

What she had worn once simply to blend in with everyone else, now served as a reminder that she wasn't one of the townsfolk. It served as a barrier between her and her students as her clothes seemed strange and excessive.

These people had quickly captured her heart though. They had suffered much and yet they still forged on. They made do with what they did have and didn't fret over what they didn't.

She wanted to help in anyway she could, especially in the way that she had been brought to Coal Valley and that was to teach the children. However, in order to properly teach this children she needed to find a way to connect to them.

One way that she saw to do that was to dress more like them. Dressing like them wouldn't make her one of them but it would help to keep her from standing out quite so much.

Simple dresses wouldn't be a cure all but it would be a step in the right direction.
