Binding the Galaxy Together
Chapter 9 – Path Made Clear
For the past three weeks, Izuku Midoriya's morning routine had been the exact same. Ever since that day he rushed in to save his "friend" Katsuki Bakugo from that sludge villain, he was constantly surprised for the turn his life had taken. In the span of one day he went from a depressed quirkless boy with shattered dreams of being a hero, to being the protégé of All Might, the number one hero, and the future holder of his impossible quirk; One For All. Every morning now he was out here at Dagobah Beach hauling trash out of it bit by bit to train his body into becoming the proper vessel it would need to be to handle One For All's power. Every day a different group of muscles burned from the strain they were being put through. But that was the whole point of this. All Might was quick to point out that the size and weight of all the different pieces of garbage would be good in working out all the muscles in his body over time. Arms, legs, knees, back, everything he would need to do what All Might can and then some.
Though it was hell, Izuku couldn't be more grateful that the number one hero of all people was paying such close attention to him and investing in his dream of heroism. The one other person whose support he was ever thankful of was his mother's. She was of course curious as to why he came to her one day with a meal plan to put nothing but nutrition into his diet. But the determination he was showing now to try and get into U.A. was enough for her to not ask any more questions. She knew full well how her son could get. And seeing him like this now, it made her happy to see him work so hard at something in a way that wasn't just writing down quirk statistics in a notebook. She was more than happy to help whatever way she could and food was the way how in this case.
Three weeks passed since the sludge villain attack and finally people had dropped the subject at school. For the most part anyway. A kid every now and again would still ask him or Katsuki about what happened. Izuku would stammer and start mumbling again. Katsuki would just tell the student to go die and walk off. Other than that, life at school was pretty much the same for him as any other kid. Boring. Katsuki had also backed off on his bullying of him since the sludge villain. In fact he barely even acknowledged Izuku's existence now. Izuku wasn't going to question it however. He had more important things to worry about.
This Sunday morning he was expecting to be no different than any other morning for the past weeks. Get up early, jog to the beach, and get to loading trash into the back of All Might's truck. Like clockwork, there All Might was in his skeleton-like body standing by his empty pickup.
"Good morning, young Midoriya." The number one hero warmly greeted his successor.
Stopping in front of him to catch his breath from his jog, Izuku waved to his mentor while he bent over and grabbed his knees.
"Good morning…*PANT* …All Might." He wheezed out.
"Hey don't lose your breath before you even start, kid." All Might warned. "I'm glad to see you're taking your training seriously but we're still just getting started. Try not to bite off more than you can chew for now."
Izuku nodded knowing he was right but still couldn't help but feel there was something also wrong with it too. He was applying to U.A. of all places with people who have had nearly their entire lives to get used to their powers. If he was to even have a chance of holding a candle to them, he had to push himself harder to catch up. The gap was too wide to be taking things easy, especially with someone like Katsuki being one he would be applying with.
"Right. Got it." Izuku replied back.
As he stood back up straight, he took the jacket of his tracksuit off and tossed it on top of All Might's truck. Then the hero himself poofed into the body everyone in the world recognized and admired.
"Excellent!" He laughed.
Then he pointed to the gigantic pile of trash that covered the beach from end to end.
"Hurry, young Midoriya! I want to see a good dent in the progress today!"
"I'll do my best, sir!"
With that, Izuku ran into the sand and began to look around for his first piece of trash to haul back to the truck. The calculations he was making in his head were going faster than his legs could carry his body. His eyes darted around as he ran into a trench formed by the fake walls of trash and stopped in the middle of the path. As he looked around, he started mumbling again to himself about what to carry and which part of his body he should work on today. Then his thoughts were interrupted when something fell from above and landed on top of him.
Ever since he had begun this routine with All Might, Izuku had gotten a pretty good grasp of how his days usually go. Wake up, eat breakfast, jog to the beach, haul trash, rinse wash repeat. It was a good routine that worked out very well for him and the burning in his muscles was a testament.
He was very sure that a girl his age falling on top of him and him putting a hand over her eyes was not a part of his training.
"Why are you grabbing my face?"
What followed next was a series of intangible babbling from the boy that could have been mistaken for a drunken man trying to form words. Izuku's face had gone even redder than the hair of the girl currently sprawled across his own body.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
The scream startled Camilla enough to jump off him and to her feet. A call of the Force made her lightsaber jump from its place on her belt and into her waiting hand. With her thumb over the activation button, she turned her head in every direction thinking the boy saw a threat she didn't.
"What is it?! Is something wrong?!"
"I'm so sorry!"
"…..what?"
Looking back down to the boy she fell on, she could make out through the Force the shape of him on his knees and bowing his head so far down he was making an impression in the sand.
"I'm sorry I touched your face without permission! It was an accident I swear! Please forgive meeeeeeeeee!"
There were endless tears gushing out of this kid's eyes. The Padawan in front of him returned her weapon to her belt seeing no need for it and got down on her own knees to try and calm him down.
"Hey hey hey! Don't worry about it! Like you said, it was an accident! Just please stop bowing...and crying."
Still sniffling up a storm, Izuku lifted his head up to look into the face of the girl in front of her. Though he did so quite slowly.
"She's….she's so close!"
His face was still just as red as he dared to look up and get a better look at her. The first thing he noticed was her heavy looking clothes and the long flowing cloak she had on over them. The belt and long red tube he saw clipped to it gave him some idea of what these clothes were supposed to be but he wasn't going to jump to any conclusions. He figured he was already in enough trouble with her for touching her face. But then he took a look at her face barely mustering the courage to do so. From first sight, Izuku surmised this girl was around his own age. Those thoughts were pushed aside when he finally took a gander at her eyes and their color, or rather lack thereof.
"Your eyes…." He whispered out loud.
Hearing that caused Camilla to droop in her posture a little bit and a sigh accompanied it. Of course it was the first thing to be noticed.
"Could we maybe not get into that?" She asked sounding disappointed.
The way she turned away from him and pulled her hood a bit more over her head was a clear sign to Izuku that her eyes were a sore subject.
"Uh…s-sure." He said as he adjusted himself up to where he was sitting on his knees.
"Young Midoriya!"
Izuku started to momentarily panic as his buff mentor rounded the corner of the trash path and looked down at his successor.
"Is everything alright? I heard-oh."
The giant sized human stopped in his tracks when he noticed there was another person there. The interesting fashion statement led him to believe this child was an intern or a sidekick but he kept his thoughts to himself for now and worked to try and figure out what was going on here. Izuku was on his knees, there were a few pieces of trash scattered around the two of them, and the other person was kneeling in front of the young green haired boy.
"Is there something we can help you with, young one?"
When the figure turned around to face, All Might could see through the hood the face of a young girl looking back at him. Seeing that made him jump to an assumption.
"Aaahhh! So that was you I just heard screaming just now! Well I certainly hope nothing happened to-"
"A-actually, All Might….that was me." Izuku raised his hand and bowed his head again out of sheer embarrassment.
All Might himself staggered when Izuku admitted that to him, right in front of a girl that looked to be his age no less.
"….OK…young Midoriya." He said as some sweat ran down the back of his head.
"Rule one of talking to girls, kid. Never admit you can scream like one in front of them."
Then he got back on track and looked down at Camilla in front of him. She in turn seemed to be looking right back at him with a look of awe and astonishment. All Might figured she was star struck upon being in front of the number one hero as most kids that age tend to be.
"So much power…so many lights."
When she muttered that however, neither he nor his successor really knew what to make of it. So they just decided to start with simple questions.
"What exactly is going on here? And what is your name, young one?"
The voice from this giant man was boisterous and grand. To Camilla it gave her the impression that he was some sort of idol in this world. And the sheer power she could sense radiating off his body through the Force only backed that theory. She stood back up and brushed the sand off her clothes before looking back and forth between him and the boy she fell on.
"I apologize. I was just walking around and I stumbled upon this place. I heard this one here walking and I kinda got startled and tried to hide. But I ended up falling on him by accident."
That made sense to All Might. That would explain the bits of trash surrounding her landing spot.
"And I kinda put my hand on her face thinking she was trash on my body." Izuku admitted as he rubbed the back of his head.
All Might nodded in understanding while he looked down between the two of them. Then he focused on the girl about to ask for her name yet again but stopped when he finally took notice of something through her hood.
"Oh my goodness, young lady. Your eyes."
Camilla did not attempt to hide her frustrated sigh as she whipped her hood off her head.
"Yeah yeah. I know. I'm blind." She bemoaned.
"Well you certainly shouldn't be out here by yourself. Surely you must have wandered in here by mistake. Let's get you out of here and find your parents."
Rather than happily accept the help of the number one hero like he himself expected, the girl before him merely turned and to look at him and shook her head taking both him and Izuku aback.
"No thank you. I knew full well I was coming in here. The smell alone was enough to point that out."
That confused the two of them. She meant to come in here? Why? And how? She didn't seem to have a cane with her or a service animal that most disabled people seem to have. Hell she didn't even have glasses to cover her eyes. They were about to ask what she meant by that until-
*SCREEEECH!*
Looking up, Izuku and All Might saw some of the trash that Camilla fell from was starting to lean over. Then a few of the bigger pieces started to fall towards the green haired boy. All Might was about to reach out a giant arm to catch it but someone beat him to the punch. Izuku covered his head in case the trash hit him. Then he took in a sigh of relief a few moments later when he didn't feel anything impact.
"Whew. Thanks All Might."
"Uuhh….it wasn't me, Young Midoriya."
Confused now, Izuku opened his eyes and looked up to see All Might still in front of him. But between him and Izuku, the girl now stood turned back to facing the other teen and had her right arm stretched out and directed over Izuku's head. Trailing his vision up further, the scrawny teen gasped in amazement as he saw the trash hovering above him by a meter or two. Both Izuku's and All Might's gaze went back and forth from the trash to the girl who was "holding" it. She pushed her arm out a bit further and the trash followed her mental command through the Force. When it was a bit behind Izuku, she dropped her arm and the trash too fell to the sand.
All Might was astonished that she reacted so quickly and used her power with such precision despite her lost sense. Izuku however was on a whole other elevation. The stars he had in his eyes were shining even brighter than the sun coming over the horizon.
"That's amazing! A telekinetic power! Such versatility!"
"That's not all I got." Camilla decided to enlighten on something else since she exposed her power to them. "Believe it or not I can see. Maybe not as well as you but my abilities allow me a limited form of vision. So you see I didn't just wander in here like you assumed I did."
That last bit was directed towards All Might with a little bit of annoyance thrown in. Taking the hint, All Might backed up in his opinion of this girl and rubbed the back of his head.
"Oh uh…yes! Yes you're right. I am indeed sorry, young lady." He then said as he looked back down at her again. "You were blessed. To be born with such a condition and then to discover a quirk that allows you to overcome it and then some."
Camilla shrugged at that agreeing with him. Yeah she was born pretty lucky in that regard.
"Now I don't believe you've told us your name, miss."
The girl then turned to look at the big guy as she adjusted her cloak on her shoulders.
"Camilla. Camilla Sharro." She replied. "And you two?"
Izuku shot straight up to his feet and bowed to her, causing Camilla to tilt her head in confusion again.
"My name is Izuku Midoriya. And well…I don't think I need to introduce All Might of all people."
As if to go with Izuku's introduction, All Might did a few of his more popular poses for the girl as his successor shared his name. The kids always seemed to love it when he flexed his arms for them.
"Who's All Might?"
The beach suddenly went so silent not even the sound of the waves crashing nearby could be heard. All Might and Izuku were frozen in place as they both heard a question asked that they had never expected to be heard in either of their lifetimes. Nervously, Izuku stood back up and looked at the girl with nothing but shock plastered all over his face. Immediately those emotions could be sensed by her through the Force as if they were screaming into her ear.
"You….you're….you're kidding right? Haha! Hahahahaha! You have to be! Who hasn't heard of All Might?!"
As Izuku kept laughing, All Might slowly started to join in thinking too that it was just a joke from the blind girl.
"Yes! Hahahahahahaaaaa! A very well played jest indeed, young Sharro!"
"What jest? I really don't know who you are."
For the second time the glass had shattered and now both of them were staring at this girl with disbelief. Camilla, finally getting an idea that this All Might was someone of great importance, decided to ease them up a bit with a bit of the truth.
"I'm sorry but I don't really know a lot about this place. I don't come from anywhere near here."
"But...but All Might is the symbol of peace for the entire planet! You have to have heard of him."
Izuku almost sounded desperate for her to say she did. As if his entire world view depended on it. Camilla was just looking at All Might with that new information floating around in her head.
"Symbol of peace?"
That was something she would have to bring up with Ryukyu later. For now, filled with sympathy, she turned to both of them and gave soft shrugs with her answer.
"I'm sorry but I haven't. But….I suppose it wouldn't hurt to learn."
"Camilla? Camilla are you there?"
The familiar voice to the Jedi caused her to reach into the pouch on her belt and pull out her small communicator. R3 must have given Ryukyu the other one. She pressed and held down the button on it before she spoke into it.
"Yes I'm right here." She responded.
"Oh thank goodness. I came in to check on you this morning and found you gone. Where are you?"
"Uhhh….you know that's a good question." She wondered.
"Wait a minute I know that voice." All Might muttered. "Would that happen to be the dragoon hero Ryukyu?"
Izuku's eyes filled with stars again at the mention of the name.
"Whoa Ryukyu?! The current number nine hero?!"
"Yeah that's her." Camilla responded.
What did he mean by number nine? Clearly there were still a lot of things to learn about this world that she wasn't told yet.
"Would you mind if I spoke with her?"
All Might could tell Ryukyu had a better idea of who this kid was since she knew Camilla's name. Hesitant at first, but Camilla could sense no bad intent coming from All Might and placed the communicator in his giant hand.
"Press and hold the middle button to speak. Let go when you're done."
Just like a police radio or walkie talkie. How interesting. Looking down at the thing All Might was intrigued by the design of it. It certainly didn't look like anything he had seen. But nevertheless, he pressed a big finger down on the button and held the device to his mouth.
"Ryukyu? This is All Might."
"What? All Might? What are you doing with Camilla?"
"Actually I only just met young Sharro mere moments ago. We're out here at Dagobah Beach."
"Dagobah Beach? What is she doing out there? In fact, what are you doing out there?"
All Might like Camilla, decided to tell a bit of the truth. He knew Ryukyu could be trusted not to spill the beans on secrets. She was no Uwabami.
"I'm out here giving private workout lessons for a young child I have discovered. I intend for him to be fit enough for the U.A. entrance exam next year. He has a long way to go before he's ready but I have nothing but faith in him that he will succeed."
Izuku felt like crying again upon hearing his longtime idol praise him in such a way again. It was almost too much for him sometimes. Upon the mention of U.A., Camilla suddenly grew a bit more interested in these two. The same place Nejire and Ryukyu were trying to talk up yesterday was apparently Izuku's hopeful destination. She couldn't help but wonder why. After what she heard about this hero society she wasn't too sure she was on board for it.
"I brought him out here to the beach as part of his daily training. We got a bit interrupted by young Sharro here when she walked in. But don't worry about a thing. We're all just fine here."
Back at the agency building, Ryukyu was sitting on Camilla's bed with R3 in front of her and the other comm device in her hand. When she heard All Might was personally training someone for U.A. she thought she misheard it but no. All Might had taken special interest in someone? She wondered what brought something like that on. All Might was definitely one for the public eye but she never thought of him taking on a personal student. He didn't even offer internships or work study opportunities for U.A. students. Still, she pressed the button down and spoke back again.
"So Camilla is alright?"
"Yes she is! Is she staying with you by chance?"
"Yes. Her situation is a delicate one that I'm doing my best to straighten out. I can't really say that much else about it."
"I'm sure you have your reasons. But do you want me to escort her back to your building?"
Ryukyu thought about that for a second. Clearly Camilla had no intentions of going anywhere if she left her master's lightsaber and R3 behind. Maybe she just needed a walk to clear her head. She could give her that much.
"No it's not necessary."
Back at the beach, Camilla smiled in knowing Ryukyu trusted her.
"But she does need to come back eventually. There are some things later that need to be discussed."
Of course the young Jedi knew what it was going to be about, but she still didn't have an answer. She didn't even have the workings of one. Meanwhile All Might and Izuku were both wondering what it was that these two had in common with each other? Was it something similar to what they were doing? No way. Nothing could ever be as big as One For All. They were sure of it.
"I think she got the message." All Might responded. "In fact, if it's alright with you, I think I'll take her and my student out for breakfast."
Both Izuku and Camilla looked at him surprised by the idea. Why was All Might interrupting their training now?
"I have no problem with that at all."
"Excellent! I shall speak with you later, Ryukyu! And uh….would you mind keeping word about my student quiet? Last thing he needs is the press following him around."
"I understand completely. Your secret is safe with me. I look forward to hearing from you again, All Might."
With the conversation over, All Might handed the communicator back to Camilla and she took it.
"Thank you. And I apologize for interrupting your training. I should leave you two alone now."
Before she could even get a step in, her stomach gave off a loud growling noise.
"Would I be correct to assume you haven't had breakfast yet?"
All Might never lost his smile, even when Camilla nodded as if in defeat, having an idea where this could be going.
"Well then let's get walking! There's a nice place nearby that serves up a hell of a tamagoyaki."
"Are you really sure it's alright to just go eat now? We still have training to do after all."
Izuku sounded very surprised that All Might was so okay with going off book like this. However, the number one hero did not have the same definition of going off book.
"Of course! One slight detour in plans for today won't hinder anything so long as we get right back to it. Besides, I think we owe young Sharro here for stopping that trash from falling on you."
Camilla was about to retort that it wasn't necessary to pay her back for that but she had a feeling All Might was going to keep insisting. Stupid stomach. It kept growling at the most inopportune times. Reluctantly, she began walking after All Might leaving Izuku there in his place. He was frozen stiff where he stood upon finally realizing something.
"Holy crap I just talked to a girl!"
As he processed that, Izuku's legs began to move albeit in a slower pace after his mentor and the ruby haired girl he had just been near. They both waited for him at the top of the stairs leading down to the beach and then they both followed All Might from that point on as he led them to this restaurant he knew of. It was a short walk only taking maybe five minutes. When they came to a stop, two out of three of them looked up and down the place taking in the details while the other was using the Force to make out as much as she could. She could see a few outdoor dining tables on the patio and a small door to what appeared to be a very small establishment. All Might and Izuku saw that as well as a few other details. Like the chipped paint on the door and the cardboard box covering a hole in the window from only one side.
"All Might…how long has it been since you were here last?" Izuku asked his idol.
The number one hero himself laughed sheepishly again as he saw just how rundown this place had gotten.
"I admit it's been a little longer than I had initially thought. But never judge a book by its cover young Midoriya! Holes in the wall like this are part of what make this city great! Now go in there and ask for a table out on the patio. Fitting through the door is such as hassle."
With a shaky nod, the skinny teen walked through the door of the café leaving All Might and Camilla alone. The number one hero looked down to the girl to get a closer look at her. Her eyes may have had no color but the shape of them and the rest of how her faced looked signaled to him that she was clearly not Japanese. If so, then where? Camilla definitely sounded more like a common American name. Was she a runaway that bumped into Ryukyu?
While those thoughts ran through his head, the thoughts inside Camilla's head were more focused on the sheer amount of power she could feel radiating off this big buff man as if he were a human generator. She knew this planet was practically dipped in Force energy presumably because of the people's quirks, but this was a whole other level on its own. Mirko has those super strong legs of hers, Nejire shoots energy blasts, and Ryukyu can turn into a freakin full sized dragon. What kind of power was THIS strong?
Both those trains came to a stop when Izuku walked back out with a waiter following him. The waiter himself smiled brightly and immediately bowed when he realized who was in front of him.
"A-A-A-All Might! Welcome to our café! P-please! Sit wherever you'd like!"
And the pro did just that. He stepped over the gate to the patio and took a seat at a table in the corner. His successor and their new acquaintance joined him soon. Izuku took a seat next to All Might and Camilla sat across from the boy her age. The waiter came over with three glasses of water for the table and was about to leave before All Might stopped him.
"Three orders of the tamagoyaki please."
As the waiter walked off and wrote down the order on his tiny notepad, the two kids looked up at him.
"Trust me. You'll enjoy this." Then he turned back to the girl across from him and Izuku while keeping that trademarked smile of his right on his face.
She seemed to have her own gaze locked onto Izuku. He couldn't tell why though. For Camilla it was odd. All Might was radiating so much power off himself yet Izuku…he didn't seem to radiate any. Yes there was a small connection to the Force in him but nothing very noteworthy. However that wasn't what was concerning her. What did concern her was the fact that she could feel a whole bunch of fear flowing out of him.
"Is…he OK?" She asked the buff hero.
Looking down to his successor, All Might gently nudged his shoulder. Izuku did jerk his head back up to look at him but when he turned and saw Camilla again, he froze in his place.
"You can talk to me, you know. I won't bite or anything."
Hearing that did very little to calm him down but verbal permission to speak seemed to do the trick. Mustering up a bit more courage to talk to the female in front of him, Izuku opened his lips to speak. It only took him one false start before actual words came out of them.
"I'm…I'm still just sorry…for earlier…."
"Wait. You still feel bad about grabbing my face?"
The meek "Mhm." from the boy made Camilla just look at him in sheer amazement. Again she didn't need her power to sense the lack of confidence in this guy. It was in his voice alone.
"Wow. Just…wow."
"You don't have to feel bad. If anything, Izuku, I should feel bad for falling on you."
She was sure that she said the right thing to make him feel better. But the moment she stopped talking, the feeling of anxiety could be sensed coming off Izuku again. If she could make out the details on his face, Camilla would be able to see the scrawny boy's face turning red again.
"What? What's wrong?" She asked him.
"I think young Midoriya is a bit flustered because you called him by his first name." All Might answered.
Once again, the idea of learning how things worked on this world seemed overwhelming to Camilla. Even calling people by their names had a social protocol?
"I'm…sorry. I didn't mean anything by it." She softly muttered.
She turned away nervously unsure of what to say now. All Might surmised maybe she was an American after all and came from a place where calling people by their first names was the norm.
"Hahahaaa! It's no trouble at all, young Sharro!" He waved it off with a laugh to make her feel better. "Right, young Midoriya?"
Shakily, Izuku looked to Camilla once more and nodded his head to her.
"R-right. It's no trouble. It's just customary here to call people by their last names unless you're super close or something to them." He stammered. "But if you want, you can call me Izuku. I don't mind."
Now Camilla turned her head back and the two were looking each at other eye to eye. So to speak at least. The faintest hint of a smile could be seen by the two of them as she gazed at Izuku.
"Well alright. Only if you call me Camilla. It sounds a lot better than Sharro if you ask me."
The redness in his face gone, the green haired teen looked to the ruby haired girl with a bit more confidence.
"Alright then. It's nice to meet you, Camilla."
"Good to meet you too, Izuku. And you as well, All Might."
"The pleasure is mine, young lady!"
With introductions officially out of the way, the three of them began to converse again. This time at a much more comfortable level.
"So how does your power work?" Izuku had wanted to ask that since he saw her use it. "Is it just basic telekinesis? Or does it just work on small objects like my mom does? I know so many mental emitter type quirks can move various objects of different sizes so that leaves a ton of variables on the table. I wonder if it can be used to move even human bodies too. That would mean your potential for moving this is practically limitless. And if it also allows you to see-"
As more and more words started to flow out of Izuku's mouth, All Might and Camilla were both looking at him unsure of what to make of his muttering. He was talking so fast at this point neither of them could really keep up. Hell they weren't even sure Izuku himself was keeping up.
"Does he…do this often?" The blind girl asked All Might.
"More often than you'd think." He answered.
They allowed him to mumble on for a few more seconds before the buff pro hero nudged him. Good timing it turned out to be since the waiter from before came out with three identical looking plates of food. One each one were chopped up rolls of eggs and chopsticks on each plate. One by one the plates were set in front of the three patrons and the waiter left them alone once more. Happily, All Might told them to dig in as he didn't hesitate to do so himself. Izuku smiled enjoying the savory scent coming to him from the food and picked up his chopsticks. Right as he did however, he looked over to Camilla who wasn't moving. He could hear her sniffing a few times but she wasn't reaching for her chopsticks. He didn't have a clue as to why until he looked at her eyes again.
"Oh crap! I'll get you a fork! Uh…waiter!"
"Don't worry about it."
She raised a hand to wave off his concerns. Then using that same hand, she held it over her plate. One cut portion of the rolled up eggs began to float off the surface and above her hand. Izuku seemed to be in a trance as she watched the girl use her power so freely just to eat breakfast. She took the first bite of her gifted meal and let it run over her tongue a bit before she began to chew it. Both the guys in front of her watched her seemingly analyze her food not knowing what was going through her head.
A moment later she swallowed the first bite and seemed to freeze in her seat. All Might was worried she didn't like it and was more than ready to order her something else. The next moment however, she used her power to throw the rest of the chunk into her mouth and start eating it like it was the first thing she'd ever eaten. When she swallowed that bite, she looked at the two of them with her eyes closed and a wide smile plastered on her face.
"This is delicious!"
Camilla didn't hesitate to resume eating at a much faster pace now. Izuku and All Might exhaled in relief and delight that she was enjoying her food. And wow was she enjoying it. The way she used her power to throw bit by bit into her mouth and lovingly enjoy the taste was almost adorable to watch. When she was almost done, they remembered that they hadn't even started on theirs. They decided to follow her example and eat in a slower pace than her. Though one of them had to be reminded of that.
"Slow down there, young Midoriya." All Might warned. "You don't want to get a stomach ache right before we get back to training."
Before she took the last bite of her food, Camilla stopped herself and looked at Izuku again making out his form through the Force. She remembered what was said when the pro hero used her communicator to speak with Ryukyu. She set the last bit of tamagoyaki down on her plate and washed what was in her mouth down with some of her water before she spoke directly to Izuku.
"Right. That's why All Might said you we're out there at the beach. You're training to go to U.A. High?"
Izuku swallowed some more of his meal before continuing. The determination in his voice was starting to flow out and replace the timid boy who was afraid to look at her.
"That's right. I only have a little over nine months now before the exam. It's not going to be easy. If anything I'm sure this is only the start of ten months of pure hell. But it's all going to be worth it if I can achieve my dream of going to the same school All Might went to. Then I'll become the greatest hero ever known."
As she listened in, Camilla grew a little more impressed with this boy than she was upon first meeting him. As he gave that little speech, the timid little stick seemed to vanish and in his place sat a determined and driven guy who seemed ready to give his all and then some to achieve his dream. It honestly made her appreciate his goal.
"That sounds like a great dream to have." She nodded to him with a small smile. "I sincerely hope you get it."
"Thank you." Izuku smiled in kind. "That means a lot to me. Trust me."
All Might looked between the two kids as they conversed and patiently waited for his turn to bring up a subject matter he had wanted to but couldn't quite transition into. So he just went for it.
"So I'm curious, young Sharro. How did you come to be in Ryukyu's care?"
Camilla quickly realized she had to be very careful here. She knew she could divulge some of the smaller details but the knowledge that she was from another planet had to remain under wraps for the time being. At the same time though, she didn't want to lie to them. How was she supposed to tell the truth but also not tell the truth at the same time? She just had to take it one bit at a time.
"Ryukyu and I met a couple nights ago when I was involved in an accident. Since I'm technically an orphan with nowhere to go and no next of kin, Ryukyu offered to let me stay at her building until something more permanent could be figured out."
Or she could abridge it down to just two sentences. That was an option. As she finished, she could sense a bit more emotion coming off Izuku and All Might that seemed to be a blend of sympathy and worry. Ryukyu said Camilla was staying with her at her building but they didn't know why yet. Now that they knew a bit more about her situation their first instinct was to feel bad about it.
"I'm sorry, Camilla. That must be rough." Izuku muttered.
"Buddy you don't even know the half of it."
Out loud she said something else.
"Don't worry about it. It's just a rough patch for me right now. I'll get through it."
It did little to ease their worries but they didn't press any further. Something Camilla was very grateful for. The less they asked, they less she needed to explain herself and risk getting caught in a web of bald faced lies. Them taking that short little tidbit and being satisfied was perfect for her.
Soon enough, everyone finished their meals and All Might paid the check. When they left, they stood at the entrance to the café. Camilla was looking to the right while All Might and Izuku were looking to the left.
"The beach is back this way."
"And I'm positive Ryukyu's building is this way."
"Are you sure you don't need us to escort you back?"
Smiling to ward off their worry, Camilla waved to the two of them.
"Trust me. I'll be ok." She answered him before redirecting her words to the green haired boy. "Good luck with your training, Izuku."
"Thanks. I hope you get your situation figured out." He bid back to her.
"I will. May the F-"
She stopped herself from finishing that sentence and curled her lips in. No. She couldn't say that here lest she get caught with more questions.
"Uhhh…may the what?" Izuku wondered to her.
"Umm…nothing. I promise. Anyway, bye."
Not giving them time to form another word, Camilla began to walk away with her cloak fluttering in the breeze. Izuku and All Might were certain that there was something she wasn't telling them about that sentence she stopped herself from finishing. Hell they barely learned anything about her at all. And they wanted to know. They had so many more questions in the back of their heads raring to be asked. But after they learned she's apparently an orphan with nowhere to go they didn't want to ask her anything in fear of her thinking it was some sort of interrogation. So they dropped it but they so badly wanted to know. Why was Ryukyu letting her stay at her building and not a hospital? What was with those clothes and the pieces of round metal on her waist? How did her quirk allow her to see and move things with her mind? It was all just too much to think about.
"So back to training?"
"Yes! Let's go!"
They could ask their questions later. Try as they might they couldn't shake the feeling that they would be seeing her again. They just didn't know when or where. But something was telling them they hadn't even begun to see the last of Camilla Sharro. As they began to haul out more trash that thought stayed in their heads.
As Camilla kept walking and turning the corners on the street, she was mentally kicking herself for almost letting a "May the Force be with you" out of her mouth. Coming up on the street the agency was, her mind transferred from that to the feeling of immense power to no power at all she could feel coming off All Might and Izuku respectively.
"I don't get it. I can sense everyone's connection to the Force on this world but why did that All Might person have so much of it? And why does Izuku have so little if not none at all? What is happening here? I'm only on this world my second day and I'm more confused than I've ever been! They want me to go to U.A., to be a hero for this world but….gaaaah! Why is this all happening to me?!"
Frustrated as she was, Camilla did her best to remember her training. Getting her emotions under control was vital to being a Jedi. An untamed mind makes a dangerous animal. A mind centered with its body, and has the Force as its ally, makes for a fierce warrior. The difference was night and day. Master Morlev always taught that to her. For the most part she handled those teachings well but she still had her episodes where she was overwhelmed. After all she only landed on this planet two days ago. She figured after calming down from yesterday's bad news and learning about U.A. High School, she figured she'd make the best out of a bad situation and learn how to live on this planet. But U.A. still wasn't sitting right with her after hearing about how this super powered society worked. All the heroes of this work were paid to do so? And people couldn't use their powers even if it meant they could help or needed to defend themselves? It just seemed so backwards to her. The Jedi always taught her she would keep peace as a knight. Was getting a license here really the only way she could do that?
As she entered the agency building, Camilla felt the locks on the door were no longer latched and pushed her way in. When she entered her room on the second floor, she threw her cloak off and draped it over R3 who beeped in irritation.
"Camilla? Are you back?"
Hearing the dragoon hero's voice, Camilla sat on her bed and called to her.
"Yeah I'm back."
It was only a few seconds later when Ryukyu walked into the room and took a seat at the chair she was in yesterday.
"Did you have a nice breakfast with All Might?"
"I did. He's a very kind man. And Izuku is nice too."
Izuku? That must have been the name of the student All Might said he took on.
"Right yeah he did say that. I'm surprised the number one hero has taken someone under his wing. I was sure after Sir Nighteye he was done with sidekicks.
Putting a tab in whomever Sir Nighteye was Camilla went back to that sentence to repeat something.
"Izuku said that too. The number one hero. What does that mean?"
Ryukyu blinked. There was indeed still much she had left to explain about this world. But this one was thankfully easy.
"Since there are so many professional superheroes in this world, the idea to rank them on a scale of popularity was put into official effect. The more work you do as a hero and more villains you put away, the more known you become and the higher you are ranked on the charts. Every hero always vies for the number one spot. While I rest currently and number nine, and Mirko at five, All Might has stood undisputed as number one for years now. Every fight with a villain he's ever been in has been completely one sided. And every time he runs into a crumbling building to save its occupants, he always comes out without a single casualty. This trend carried him up and up the numbers until finally he stood alone at the top, barely a rival alive to match. Save for the number two hero behind him."
The heroes here were all ranked in popularity? What point was there even to a system like that? Camilla's thoughts were jumbled. Sure the Jedi had their ranks from youngling to master but there was never any chart numbering them from least to most popular. Then again the numbers of the Jedi weren't nearly enough to occupy a whole planet like this one. Also the chart has apparently been around for some time so she let that be and just focused on the chart itself. With Ryukyu, she could transform into a freaking dragon. That was an incredible power. And she was just number nine? What the hell kind of power did All Might have that got him up to number one? Could he flick his fingers and blow up the planet if he wanted to or something? Actually with how much power she could feel off him earlier, it probably wasn't that far off a guess.
"Wow….he sounds like quite guy." She finally answered as she looked at Ryukyu. "Is that why you wanted to become a hero in the first place? To get high up on a ranking list?"
"Not even close."
The way she said no and how the dragoon hero didn't hesitate in her answer made Camilla flinch just a bit. It almost sounded like she was insulted by such an idea. Keeping that same tone, Ryukyu went on.
"I hardly care about the charts. I only got so high up on them because I take my job as a hero so seriously. No. I became a hero because I know for a fact I can and should use my power to protect people who can't protect themselves. It's as simple as that. And if that comes with being placed number nine on the hero ratings then so be it. It's helpful in boosting business I'll admit that much but it's not even close to one of my biggest reasons for doing what I do. I'm a hero, Camilla, because I've known I could be one since I was a child and wanted nothing more."
The way she talked about her job, Camilla could tell easily it wasn't just about making money or the rankings or anything like that. She did it because she loved it and she knew it was what she was meant to do. She took on the responsibility of saving people from danger without a second thought. Was that…was that what All Might thought too? And Izuku? Mirko and Nejire?
Over in the chair, Ryukyu was studying Camilla's face and watching it twist into various forms of thought and confusion. It made the number nine hero a tad concerned.
"Are you alright?"
Shaking her head a bit, the Padawan gathered herself.
"Yeah. I just uh….what you said was helpful."
Ryukyu knew what that meant.
"You've been thinking more about U.A.?"
A nod was the first part of her response.
"I have. I still don't have a clear answer but…I think I will soon."
Nodding, Ryukyu stood back up to leave the room.
"Then I'll leave you to it. Mirko and I both have to go out and patrol. Nejire will be coming with me. We'll come back later when it's time for lunch."
Camilla thanked her and Ryukyu then left to go to work as a hero, leaving the stranded Jedi to think more about what U.A. could do for her if she decided to go there. This hero society seemed flawed in a lot of ways by the things she learned about it yesterday from Tsukauchi and the others. But there had to be more to it than that. That was what Camilla went to bed that night hoping for. Ryukyu managed to instill some of that hope into her with that explanation of why she became a hero. She needed more though. She needed to know why more of these people wanted to become heroes in the first place. But she couldn't just go around town asking people left and right interrupting them. So who did that leave?
One second later she remembered. She just had to wait until tomorrow to ask him. She spent the rest of the day meditating and went back up to the roof for a bit to practice her saber techniques a bit more. Sooner than they both thought, night came and it was time to sleep again.
The next morning out at Dagobah Beach the sun was starting to rise over the ocean and begin another week of school that Izuku was not looking forward to. Not only did it mean time away from his training but it also meant a possible ugly encounter with Katsuki. He had calmed down yes but still, the guy was a literal walking time bomb. One wrong word could be enough to set off one of those explosions of his. But he still had some time before he had to get going. All Might wasn't going to be at the beach until later so he had to get started with hauling trash on his own. As he looked out into the mountains of garbage, he worked out a plan and took a step into the sand to start.
"Izuku?"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!"
Just like yesterday, Camilla's greeting back was a high pitched scream. The green haired boy turned around shocked to see the girl was back again.
"Camilla?! Wha-what are you-"
"Sorry sorry! I didn't mean to scare you. I just needed to ask you something and I figured you'd be here again. Glad to see I was right."
Calming down a bit, Izuku readjusted himself so he was standing up straight. Though he was still nervous as hell that a girl willingly came looking for him.
"Umm…sure. What is it?"
"Why do you wanna become a hero?"
Izuku snapped out of it when he heard the question asked to him. He wasn't startled but he wasn't sure if he heard her right over his scream.
"What?"
"You told me yesterday you wanted to be the greatest hero but you never said why. So why do you wanna be a hero, Izuku?
The green haired boy blinked once. Yup. He heard her right.
"You came here this early just to ask me that?!"
"Well…" The blind Padawan shuffled the heel of her boots into the sand a bit. "…I've been thinking about something really hard for a couple of days. And trust me. It's been really hard. Then someone told me why they wanted to be a hero and it got me thinking a little bit harder. I wanted to ask a few other people but I do't really know them so I thought I could ask you. So would you mind telling me what's driving you?"
Alright. It didn't seem that odd anymore. She just sounded like she wanted a clearer picture and his help could probably make it happen. So Izuku opened his mouth.
"It's true that some people only become professional heroes to try and get famous or make a ton of money. But I don't really care about any of that. I just wanna devote my life to saving people with a smile on my face. A smile that will tell them everything they need to know just by taking one look at it. That everything is gonna be alright simple because I am here. That's what All Might did and he became the symbol of peace because of it. And now, I wanna follow in his footsteps and keep that peace no matter the cost!"
Again that same determined voice flowed out of Izuku like an open hydrant. Camilla could almost feel her blood pumping just listening to it. So it was true. Izuku wasn't greedy. He just wanted to do the right thing simply because it's the ring thing. Sure he may be tying himself too tight to All Might's image but that wasn't really her business. What was her business now was that her choice had been made clear now. If a guy like Izuku Midoriya was in line to get into U.A. and make the world a better place with no reward being asked in return, and the school was filled to the brim with kids like him, then maybe going there wouldn't be so bad.
A smile on her face, she looked to Izuku and briefly nodded to him before running back up the stairs and down the street. She knew what she had to do now.
"Thanks Izuku!"
The successor to One For All only watched blankly as Camilla vanished up the stairs and away from the beach in a burst of speed he did not see coming from her at all. He had no idea what that little chat was all about, but the smile that he saw on her at the end gave him the impression that she had a clear idea about something she wanted. He only hoped for the best for her as he got back to his training by hauling trash.
A short while later at Ryukyu's building, Camilla was inside the front doors waving her hand over the locks and using the Force to make them latch together again. When that was done, she headed for the elevator to head back up to her room. When the ding from it was heard, Ryukyu walked out of it. Her own thoughts halted when the two of them crossed gazes with each other.
"Oh good morning, Camilla." Ryukyu greeted. "Did you have a nice-"
"I'll do it."
Camilla didn't want to wait for her to finish. She was taken aback by how serious the girl in front of them sounded right now.
"You'll do it?" She repeated.
The number nine hero then saw a smirk grow on the young Jedi's face that looked similar to one Mirko would normally wear into a fight.
"I may not be able to be a Jedi in the way I was hoping I would be. But Ryukyu, if people like you and Mirko can use their power here for the same reasons I was training to use mine back on Coruscant, then maybe there can be a place for me here after all. So I'll go to U.A. High. I'll become a hero but more so, I'll become a Jedi that even in death, my master can be proud of. I will be a keeper of peace like I always intended."
A smile was now present on Ryukyu's face as she listened to the Jedi's drive. She had heard reasons for being heroes from kids before but it was the ones like this that made her proud of the children that would inherit this world. She reached into her pocket and fished out her phone.
"I'll call Mirko and Tsukauchi. Nine months will pass before you know it. We got work to do before it does."
A/N
Yeah part of me isn't really happy with how this chapter turned out but I couldn't think of anything better for it. Apologies. I promise they won't all be like this one.
