Chapter 13 – Dinner at the Midoriyas
Probably only five minutes after Camilla and Izuku finished talking to Ryukyu did they arrive at the apartment complex the latter resided in. Once they were in front of the door, Izuku took out his key to it and opened it up allowing both him and his new friend inside. When they were and the door was closed behind them, Camilla watched as the green haired boy took of his shoes and left them at the door. Assuming this was what they preferred in their house she took off her own and set them by Izuku's. She was glad she wasn't wearing her Jedi boots for this. If they really smelled as bad as Nejire said they did, then she feared she'd probably get thrown out before they all passed out.
"Come in and make yourself at home." Izuku fully welcomed her in as he took off his backpack.
Camilla nodded and took a look around getting a lay of the land through the Force. This home was quite small but definitely more than enough for just two people living in it. Some furniture was laid evenly around the floor and there was a flat rectangle sitting in front of the couch. For entertainment reasons perhaps? She did notice a lot of people were holding smaller rectangles up to their faces today as she passed them by. Was it just a big communication device sitting in the room then? She couldn't ask for answers here. If she did and it turned out it was a very common thing to have, then Izuku would probably start questioning as to why she didn't know more. She already said she didn't know about hero culture and the modern society here. But she played that off as just coming from far away and isolated from the other people. That half truth wouldn't be able to work every time though.
"Mom? I'm home." Izuku called out.
"I'm in the kitchen, sweetheart."
The voice was more than familiar to Izuku but new to Camilla. As they walked further into the apartment a new figure came from another part of the small home and gave Izuku a warm hug. Through her Force granted vision, Camilla could make out the shape of this woman to be just a bit shorter than Izuku currently was and a little plump. Her emotions were content and peaceful.
"Did you have a good day at school, honey?" Inko greeted her son.
"Well it was…interesting." Izuku truthfully told.
Inko grew curious at that remark but put that thought on hold the moment she looked and saw the new person in her apartment. She didn't even bother to hide the wide smile growing on her face as she eyed the girl's body up and down.
"And is this is the friend you told me about?" The excitement in her voice was way too obvious for Izuku's liking.
"Just be cool, Mom." He quietly pleaded.
Since she couldn't make out the details on Inko's face, Camilla merely thought she was wondering what her name was. Though in hindsight, she should have thought a bit more about that level of excitement that seemed to gush out of her in those last few moments. She bowed slightly to the woman in front of her as politely as she could.
"Hello there, ma'am. My name is-GAH"
Before she could get a syllable of her name out, the Padawan learner found herself being strangled in the shockingly tight grip of the small woman. For such a small physique this woman sure could give some strong hugs.
"Oh I'm so happy my baby boy made a new friend! I'm so happy!"
As Inko hugged the life out of the girl and let her tears gush free like a wild hose, Izuku just began to panic as he saw Camilla struggling for her.
"Mom, please! Let her breathe!"
Regaining control of herself, Inko let go of the girl and backed up a few steps while she wiped her eyes dry.
"I'm sorry about that, dear. It's just…it's been a long time since anyone has befriended Izuku. So….thank you for being kind to my son."
The redhead just stood there taking in her tone and thinking a bit more deeply on it.
"Wow. It's clear she cares for her son. But she sounds so sad at the same time. Izuku told me he was bullied since he was little because he has no power. It must have done a number on her too, seeing her son like that."
She bowed again to the woman.
"It's nothing you need to thank me for, ma'am." She said to her.
Inko smiled as she looked up and down the girl again and gave her eyes one last wipe with her hand.
"Oh I'm sorry again. You were about to introduce yourself when I hugged you."
She stood up again, now sporting a small smile as she looked at the woman before her still with her sunglasses on.
"I'm Camilla Sharro, ma'am. And I'm thankful for being invited into your home."
"And I'm Izuku's mother Inko Midoriya. It's a pleasure to have you. Please make yourself comfortable. I'm almost done with dinner."
While Inko made her way back to the kitchen, Izuku led Camilla away and to the living room where they both sat down on the couch.
"Sorry about that." He apologized. "But I did tell you to be prepared."
"I was prepared for an outburst in volume. I wasn't prepared for the hidden strength your mother has in her body." Camilla retorted. "But she does seem like a nice person."
She took a few sniffs in the air. The scent brought a smile to her face.
"And whatever she's cooking sure smells amazing."
Izuku was now smiling with her.
"Oh yeah. My mom is an amazing cook. If you love the smell just wait until you taste it."
"Chalk another one up in the win area for Earth's food."
By smell alone Camilla could tell she was going to love it.
"Izuku go change out of your school clothes before dinner is ready." Inko called.
"Alright, Mom!" Izuku called back and stood up. "I'll be right back just uh…here. Watch TV or something until I get back."
Not even thinking about it, Izuku placed the remote to the TV next to Camilla before he got up and went to his room. He shut the door immediately when he was inside and looked around the walls at all his All Might merchandise taking up most of the volume. As he began to take his uniform off he thought back to the events of the day. One seemed to overshadow the rest. The fight with Katsuki. Izuku had seen Camilla use her quirk before but never in a fight. Going up against someone like Katsuki with an incredible quirk he was sure was going to be drawn out. But no. Camilla ended that fight before thirty seconds after the first explosion went off. She didn't even really hurt him. All she did was sweep him off his legs and then hold him down with her Forceful Mind power while she told his ex friend to back off. For a moment Izuku was afraid Katsuki was just going to go off on Camilla again when she let him get back up. Thankfully that wasn't the case and he just left, vowing to finish things when they were in U.A. together.
With his school uniform off and his casual clothes now on, Izuku set the uniform aside and took another look around his room. His thoughts wandered again as he once more found himself surprised that the hero his room was decorated in was now his teacher. He was also glad his mother didn't suggest Camilla look inside to see all of it. Not that she could anyway with her being blind and all. His mom would probably just point it out to her anyway and-
Wait.
Blind girl.
Outside.
…did he?
*THUD!*
Izuku paid no mind to the pain in his forehead as he threw it against the wall of his room realizing a moment of complete stupidity he just performed out there.
"Did I just tell a blind girl to watch TV?!"
Outside on the couch, Camilla first watched Izuku walk to his room then picked up the thing he placed beside her. She looked it over figuring its shape but could not for the life of her figure out what it was supposed to be. She ran the fingers over it and surmised that there were buttons all over this small thing, whatever it was. Also, what was a TV how was she supposed to watch it?
"So much to learn about this planet." She mumbled to herself. "What am I supposed to do with this little thing?"
She ran her fingers over the buttons more and tried pressing a few of them but nothing happened. It wasn't until the one at the very top was pressed until some noise was finally heard.
"Introducing the new All Might themed energy drink. Now packs just as much as a smash as the hero himself."
The noise was coming from the big rectangle thing in front of her. She could at least deduce that much but could not see a thing that was happening on it. What was happening on it was a commercial break for whatever show happened to be on that channel at the time. A spokesperson decked out in All Might themed apparel was holding a can with the same color scheme as the hero's famous suit.
"A drink can pack a punch?" Camilla was taking the sales pitch literally. "Why would anyone want a drink like that?"
*THUD!*
The new noise drew both her attention and that of Inko's over to Izuku's room where it came from.
"Izuku?" Inko called. "Are you alright in there?"
"Fine, Mom!" Izuku called back.
The door opened back up and out walked the green haired teen rubbing his forehead.
"Just bonked my head is all. Nothing bad."
Inko rolled her eyes and went back to preparing dinner while her son took a seat next to Camilla again while she looked right at him and he looked at her while picking up the TV remote.
"Sorry…" He muttered.
"You say that a lot. You know that?" Camilla replied to him. "But what are you sorry for this time?"
"For uh…suggesting you watch TV." He sheepishly said back. "I kinda forgot you couldn't."
"No no it's alright." The Jedi insisted. "But uh….what is TV?"
Once again, Izuku looked right at Camilla with widened eyes and a shocked expression. Wow this girl was seriously out of touch with the modern world. First she didn't know who All Might was and now even TV is unknown to her? From the kitchen, even Inko could hear the question asked. Though was pretty sure the sounds of food cooking on the stove made the words get distorted.
"Wow you uh…you really do come far away don't you?"
The question from the boy caused Camilla to look away feeling a bit silly and a bit nervous. Not to mention a bit sad as she remembered just where she came from and the people she wouldn't ever see again.
"Yeah." She answered softly. "Really far."
She was frowning, which meant she had to be upset about something. He didn't want to press but Izuku did want to help her feel better. He clicked the TV off and looked around for something to help change the subject. His eyes landed on the belt she was wearing which had that familiar red metal tube hanging from it.
"Say, what is that thing on your belt? I don't think I've ever really asked."
Perking up a little bit, Camilla's hand went to her side and her finger's traced over the hilt of her weapon. She plucked it from her belt and held it fully in her hand before her fingers opened up and it levitated off her palm.
"This little thing?" She was smiling again.
"Yeah." Izuku looked at it closely, remembering just what came out the open end earlier in the fight. "What is it? Some kind of sword?"
"That's exactly what it is." Camilla answered.
The weapon returned to her palm right side up and she held it up towards the ceiling. One press of the button and,
*PSSSSHHHHEEEEW!*
The green blade erupted from the top of it again and the loud hum it gave off rang out through the entire apartment. Looking at the blade up close, Izuku was immediately captivated by it. It was so bright and looked so powerful just by the noise alone. It was one thing to see it used in a fight and swinging around. But that didn't give him the best view of it. Now that he was staring at the blade up close, he could only wonder what aspect of Camilla's quirk gave power to it. He thought momentarily about touching it with his finger but recalling just what it did to the sidewalk not too long ago, he put that thought away and just continued to gaze. The fact that this thing was colored in green was all the more alluring to him. And the red coloring on the hilt of it caught him too. The shine on it didn't exactly look like a paintjob but it had to be. Right? No metal on earth could naturally be red.
"Oh my."
Both kids turned their gazes over the couch to see Inko standing there looking at the blade of Camilla's lightsaber with the same kind of amazed interest as her son.
*Ssshhhhhhhhp!*
"Sorry. Was that bothering you?" Camilla asked as she returned it to her belt.
Inko shook her head to both get out of her daze and answer the girl.
"Oh no not at all, dear. I was just going to tell you both that dinner is ready. So come and sit down."
Excited to taste more of this planet's food, Camilla followed after Izuku from the couch and over to the table where they were to eat. The table was right behind the couch they were sitting on and Inko was bringing over more food to place on the table to serve to the two kids. When they were seated, Inko brought out a couple glasses and a pitcher of water for them before taking a seat herself.
Taking in a breath through her nose, the many scents flooding into the Jedi nearly overwhelmed her. It all smelled so good and she couldn't tell anything apart from the other. There was one plate in front of her with a small bowl of something else to the side and a glass for her water on the other. The same was in front of both Inko and Izuku.
"This all smells so wonderful, Mrs. Midoriya." She complimented the chef.
Inko smiled in return.
"Well thank you, Camilla." She nodded to the redhead. "So I gotta know now. That green sword thing. Is that your quirk?"
Camilla only smiled and shook her head no to the question. As she got a hand ready to demonstrate the main use of her "quirk" Izuku was internally smiling knowing his mother of all people would get a kick out of this. As the girl next to her moved her hand, the pitcher of water moved as well and hovered through the air before it stopped before her glass. When Camilla was done pouring herself some water, she returned the pitcher to its spot on the table. The reaction was pretty much how Izuku was expecting to be.
"Well I'll be! Another mind mover!" Inko was excited and held out her own hand.
To Camilla's surprise, the pitcher did the exact same thing she made it to before. Only Inko caught the pitcher's handle in her palm and poured the water out manually. Then she placed it down by hand. At first the young Jedi thought the Force was at play but knew better a moment later to assume that. Just because she has a similar ability doesn't mean it's automatically the Force.
"Oh wow. So you can move things telekinetically as well?" She asked to be safe.
"Well…not so much move as attract." Inko shrugged. "My quirk only lets me attract small objects towards myself. I'm not as versatile as you seem to be."
"Well it's still nice to meet another with a similar power to mine."
Izuku wanted to tell her mother more about her new friend's quirk but refrained from doing so. That was Camilla's story to tell not his. It was only polite. So he grabbed his chopsticks and began to eat the meal in front of him and Inko began to do the same. But a few seconds in, the mother looked over again at the redhead and noticed she was still just looking at it the plates in front of her, as if analyzing it. Was she not hungry after all?
"Camilla? Is everything alright?" She asked.
"Hm?" The young Padawan perked her head up again. "Well I'm just wondering, Mrs. Midoriya…what is all this?"
Izuku nearly choked on the bite of food he had in his mouth at the time when she asked the question. Inko meanwhile was a growing a bit concerned as to why the girl was asking what was in front of her like she couldn't…why was she wearing those sunglasses again? She turned to her son hoping for some clarification here and he just let loose a breath before turning to Camilla again.
"I think you should take the glasses off now."
Sad to say but Izuku was right and Camilla knew it. She was hoping deep down she could get through this dinner without having to let another one in on this little fact about her and avoid the inevitable pity. But here she was. Inko was looking back and forth between the two of them wondering just what her son was talking about with the sunglasses. Though if the idea she had in her head right now was right then this girl was getting hugged again. Hard. Slowly and with a lot of hesitation, Camilla slid the sunglasses off her face and kept her eyes closed as she folded the shades up and set them aside on the table. After a few seconds of waiting, she opened her eyelids and showed Inko what was behind them. A small gasp escaped out of the mother and both hands covered her mouth as she got her first good look.
"Oh my….Camilla…your eyes."
Another sigh passed by Camilla's lips as her "gaze" seemed to lock on to Inko in her place.
"Yeah…I know." She groaned.
Seeing a good amount of tears well up in his mother's eyes caused Izuku to spring into action in order to prevent the floor from being soaked.
"No no! Mom it's alright! Her quirk allows her to see! Kinda!"
That seemed to do the trick as Inko flipped back and forth between the two teens a couple times before she grabbed a napkin and wiped her eyes. She was still upset and sympathetic to the girl for her condition but the news that it was being countered by her quirk was quite interesting. She definitely wanted clarification here though. How did a quirk that allowed her to move things with her mind also translate into something like that?
"How?" She asked with one word.
Once again, Camilla had to tell the fake story of her nonexistent quirk. How she was born blind and she was lucky enough to be born with such a wide ranged mental power that allowed much more application than just telekinesis. Her sight and a couple more of her abilities were briefly explained to the matriarch of the home while she sat there leaning in close in extreme interest. When the explanation was done, Inko was sitting there with a look on her face that nearly rivaled her son's in terms of starry eyed wonder.
"That's….wow." She couldn't find the words. "So….you can see me right now."
Camilla nodded.
"I can't really see all of you, though. Like, I can see your body, the table, the food, and I could see farther than that if I concentrate. But I can't make out the smaller details. I can't see your facial details or the color of your hair or clothes."
She was about to go into detail about how she saw the lights that represented their Force connections but thankfully she was able to stop herself upon remembering these two don't know what the Force is. Camilla mentally slapped herself for forgetting that.
"It's still an amazing power, Camilla." Izuku complimented. "I'm sure you'll be able to get into U.A. with it."
The name of that school perked Inko up again.
"Well then, I didn't realize I had another future hero at my table."
The young Jedi nodded to the mother with a small smile.
"Yes, ma'am. I'm gonna train up the best I can and apply for U.A. myself."
"Well I wish you nothing but the best of luck, dear." Inko replied as she looked to Izuku. "My baby here has been training hard this past month to get ready himself."
"Oh I know. That's how we met. I kinda fell on him."
Izuku was growing uncomfortable with how much his mother was smirking at him when Camilla dropped that little tidbit of knowledge. Trying hard to change the subject now, he turned to the plate.
"So! The food in front of you! It's called katsudon! Ever had it before?!"
The green haired teen was immensely grateful that Camilla rolled with the subject change and looked down to her plate. So the smell from the plate was called katsudon. Interesting. There were so many different scents and ingredients rolled into one that it was interesting. She wanted to taste it and looked over to find a fork but rather there were two sticks. She picked them up and looked at them all sorts of confused. The Jedi then looked to Izuku and Inko and could make out the shape of sticks they were holding in their hands and tried to recreate how it was being held in their hands. It was a pitiful attempt. She couldn't get them to stay in her fingers the way they were supposed to.
Izuku recalled how when they had breakfast together she just used her power to levitate the food up to her mouth. He thought about suggesting the same here but the katsudon wasn't as solid as the tamagoyaki and a bit messier. It needed utensils in order to get as much as possible. And with his mom's cooking in front of her, he wanted to make sure his new friend got such.
"You've never eaten with chopsticks before?" Inko asked the girl.
"No, ma'am. I always used a fork." Camilla replied.
"Oh that's no problem. We have plenty. Izuku?"
"Got it!"
No time passed at all before Izuku shot up out of his chair and went to the kitchen to fetch a fork. When he came back and placed it next to her, she was still trying to figure out the placement of the sticks in her hand. Then the Jedi stopped a moment and thought of something. Letting go of the sticks, they began to float above her palm thanks to the Force. Her pinky and ring fingers closed while her thumb, index and middle finger stayed extended, almost how one would normally hold chopsticks. A few fiddles of her fingers later, the sticks were positioned and lined up in the narrow angle she made out Inko and Izuku holding them in. Closing her fingers, the sticks did to and clicked together at the tips. She repeated the action a few more times getting used to it.
"Ha. Force chopsticks." She mused to herself.
Izuku took his place back in his seat while he watched the blind girl learn how to use chopsticks in her own way. Both he and Inko were stunned for a moment as she figured it out. The hand form was fine and the sticks were at the right angle. Now she just had to use them and see if it worked. A moment later she did. The chopsticks floated down to the plate full of katsudon and they dug into the food. Pinching her fingers, Camilla made the sticks grab a chunk of the food and hold it up to her mouth. Leaning forward, she took the food into her mouth and began to taste Inko Midoriya's cooking for the first time.
*Munch munch…chew…smack…gulp*
The first bite stayed in Camilla's mouth for about ten seconds before she finally swallowed it. Inko was worried a bit that the girl didn't like it based on her flat unreadable face as she ate. Thankfully she was proven wrong in the next moment when a bright smile shined off her face.
"This is amazing!"
Immediately Camilla commanded the sticks to go back down and start raking more of the katsudon into her mouth as fast as possible. Izuku and Inko couldn't help but smile with her as they watched her state of utter joy. Once again, the culinary parts of this planet astounded the Jedi. Growing up at the temple she of course ate. But the food she was served was pretty much slop compared to this. The Jedi followed a strict diet to promote both physical and mental health in one. The only exceptions to that rule were the ones that weren't human and also needed other sources of food for biology reasons. Then the war came and all that was mixed in with…war rations. Packets of tactical food that had barely any taste but were full of nutrients needed to keep fighting. It was horrible.
Now here comes planet Earth and Inko Midoriya blessing her with all this food that had actual taste to it. The mixture of flavors she had experienced so far in her less than a week here already blew anything the temple kitchen ever made her out of the water. She almost wanted to jump over and hug the woman right then and there. But first, finish dinner. And boy did she. Those sticks were raking in that food to her mouth like a gardener outside raking the leaves off the sidewalk.
"I'm glad you like it, Camilla. Maybe slow down though. I don't want you to leave with a stomach ache."
Inko's warning did work a bit as Camilla slowed down with the sticks. She sat back up straight and set them down for a second to grab her glass of water and wash what she had in her throat down.
"Right. Sorry Mrs. Midoriya."
"Oh there's no need to apologize. You like it. I'm glad. It's just the way you attacked it, it's like you've never eaten real food before."
Again, not something to go into full detail over.
"Oh I have." She honestly replied. "But I think it's safe to say your cooking wins over anything else I've eaten in my life."
Izuku just laughed a bit and continued to eat off his own plate as he too agreed with Camilla's words. A few more bites were had between the three of them before the girl was asked another question.
"So that sword of yours? Is that part of your power too?"
Izuku was the one to ask this one. Camilla smiled a bit, remembering how Nejire asked that same question when she was explaining the Force to her. Taking the hilt of her belt and holding it up for both him and Inko to see, she explained the more obvious bits about it.
"No. This isn't powered by me. This is called a lightsaber and it's a very powerful and very dangerous weapon, only to be wielded by those who are trained rigorously on how to do so properly."
Inko was a little off put at the sound of a girl her age holding onto something like that if it really was so dangerous. But she wasn't about to bombard her with more questions at the dinner table. Especially after just meeting her. Slowly, she put the sword back to her belt while Izuku just followed it as it floated there.
"It's beautiful." He commented. "Who built it?"
Camilla took another sip of her water before answering.
"I did."
As she returned it to her belt, the two Midoriyas looked at her surprised yet again.
"Wait, you made that yourself?" Izuku asked again.
"Sure did." The girl smiled as she ran a couple fingers over the hilt of her little creation. "But enough about me. I have some questions for you if that's alright."
Izuku sat up straight again as the girl sitting next to him looked right at him.
"Oh uuuhhh…sure. What do you want to ask?"
"Alright. My first question is one that I hope isn't too sore for you. But after today I have to know. What is Katsuki's problem with you?"
It was amazing really how quickly Izuku's mouth turned into a frown at the mention of his former friend's name. Inko too grew concerned as she watched her son slump in his seat and wondered just how Camilla learned of the Bakugo boy's first name.
"Oh honey, please don't tell me Katsuki is bothering you again."
Her maternal instincts were starting to flare up and she was more than ready to call the Bakugo house and have a talk with Katsuki's mother and father. Sensing that his mother was getting upset, Izuku's hands went up in to try and talk her down.
"Nothing too bad happened, Mom. I promise."
"He's telling the truth, Mrs. Midoriya. I was there. And I do admit I took a bit of pleasure in knocking him to the pavement."
Rather than fearing for her son's wellbeing, now Inko was more shocked that anyone, let alone a blind girl took on Katsuki Bakugo and won. She didn't condone child violence like this and never would though.
"You fought Katsuki and won?"
Though she could make an exception just this once. The smirk from Camilla told her everything she needed to hear.
"I wouldn't call what we did a fight but he did try to hit me and I heard a boom." She turned to Izuku. "Was that boom from him?"
"Yeah. Kacchan's quirk is called Explosion. The sweat that comes off the palms of his hands is like nitroglycerin and he can make it detonate at will."
So the guy makes explosions come off his hands. A strong power yes but was that really all he had to back up his words from before? His power alone? That ego of his had to get fueled by something but just his power alone seemed a little too farfetched. She had heard of Sith and even Jedi who had ego problems like that but for someone like Katsuki, there had to be something else. Camilla could feel the hatred coming off him for Izuku like an open faucet.
"Well it didn't do him much good against me. Did it?" She joked.
Izuku turned to his mom again to fully explain.
"Kacchan ran into me and Camilla while we were walking home from school. Camilla though stood up for me and told him to leave me alone. Kacchan didn't take that well and tried to attack but Camilla made quick work of him using her quirk and lightsaber together. After that, he just left vowing that we would finish things when we were at U.A. together. Well…when you two were at U.A. together at least."
The last line made Inko frown again as she thought back to when Izuku and Katsuki were still friends as little boys. She looked to Camilla and saw a confused expression on her face and felt that she would find out about this sooner or later.
"You see Camilla, Izuku and Katsuki used to be really good friends back when they were younger. Granted Katsuki did always have something of an egotistical streak even as a small child. Part of that could be due to his mother being so aggressive. Mitsuki was never one to go soft on a lot of issues, even when it came to her own kid. Despite that, he and Izuku were still such close friends. Their shared adoration of All Might bonded them and they always proclaimed they would be heroes just like him. Then Katsuki got his quirk and Izuku was diagnosed as quirkless. From there, it just went so downhill so fast. Instead of coming home laughing, Izuku would come home crying with burn marks and bruises on him. I tried everything to get it to stop but…schools these days just can't do much it seems."
Inko brushed back a few tears as those memories played back in her head. Images of Katsuki over at this very apartment on the couch with little Izuku watching All Might on TV together, opening up trading cards, playing with action figures, she loved those days. But more and more they were replaced with the images of Izuku standing in the doorway trying to play off his injuries as accidents when she knew for a fact they weren't. Then the arguments with the schools trying to get Katsuki to stop and their responses that made her sick. Just because her son had no power didn't mean he didn't he was any less alive than any other kid. Why should he be treated as such?
If it weren't for Camilla's ability to sense emotions, she might have never picked up on the malice coming off Inko on that last sentence of her explanation. She knew that feeling all too well. The frustration of being treated differently, the teasing, the unwarranted bias against her. Masters and younglings gave her that treatment save for Master Morlev, Yoda, and a few select others like Obi-Wan and Anakin. Yes she was by all means defective but she didn't let that stop her. She worked twice as hard to be taken seriously and stay at the level of her fellow students and kept that dedication into becoming Master Morlev's apprentice. And she could tell Izuku was putting in that same effort while he was training with All Might. Yeah he had no power but he was clearly giving his training for U.A. his everything and then some. She couldn't help but see some similarities between him and her.
Sensing again that the two of them were upset as they looked back on bad memories, Camilla thought about how she could get the place feeling a bit cheery again. Inko was such a kind woman and Izuku was her…
What was he?
That was it. She hadn't fully said it herself but Izuku said it over the phone to his mom, she assumed to just calm her down. So why not make it official?
"Izuku?"
The boy in question looked back up and to the ruby haired girl.
"Yes"
"You're a nice person and you deserve to have a happy life same as anyone else. So in that spirit, would you mind if you and I were officially friends?"
The question did indeed throw Izuku for a loop. He certainly wasn't expecting a question like that to be asked at the dinner table.
"I'm…you…want to really be friends with me?"
Wow this kid was so damaged by society the thought of anyone wanting to be friends with him seemed like a foreign concept. It made Camilla sick but she pushed those thoughts away for now. She just kept a friendly smile on her face and kept talking.
"Yeah." She pointed a finger up to her eyes. "We defects have to stick together. Right?"
When she held her other hand out for him to shake, Izuku could feel another flooding of tears at the edges of his eyes ready to burst out and soak the walls and all the food on the table. His sniffling could probably be heard from the next floor down.
"Are you seriously about to start crying?" Camilla wasn't sure if she was hearing him right.
Shaking his head, Izuku grabbed a napkin and wiped his eyes dry before he could let any tears loose.
"Uhhh n-no. No. No crying here. Promise." Izuku sniffled one last time though, making his sale not very convincing.
It didn't matter though. He was too happy right now to care about that. A wide smile grew on his face as he reached over with his hand and grasped Camilla's own to shake it.
"Friends." He proclaimed.
"Friends." Camilla happily shook the hand of the future hero.
"BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!"
The moment was ruined two seconds later when across the table, Inko burst out crying herself with two large geysers of tears flowing from her eyes and onto the floor.
"OH MY BABY MADE A NEW FRIEEEHEHEHEEEENND!"
"MOM, PLEASE! NOT ON THE FOOD!"
Camilla knew that now would not be a good time to laugh. So she just kept her lips curled into her mouth and held her laughter back the best she could while Izuku calmed his mother back down. With the friendship between the two of them officially forged, the night went on and dinner was fully consumed. The only things left behind were plates, bowls, and cups with only small remnants and crumbs on their surface from what used to be there. Both Izuku and Camilla sat back in their chair feeling very satisfied and very full from the meal.
"Alright. I think I'm good on food until….next year." Camilla commented.
"We'll have a plate waiting for you on the first." Izuku joked back.
Inko stood up out of her chair and smiled at the two conversing and began to gather all the dishes together to bring them to the kitchen for washing. The two kids just sat there for a bit more, letting their full bellies dictate their decisions to move.
"I suppose we should try standing up now." Izuku suggested. "Camilla, you have telekinesis. Think you can move me so I'm standing?"
"No…too full to lift my arms." Was his answer from his new friend.
Before he could retort back, a familiar tone rang between them coming from Camilla's communicator. Jolted back into some sense of alertness, she reached into her pouch and pulled it out to speak, silencing the tone.
"Yes?"
"Camilla it's Ryukyu. I'm all done with what I'm doing. How are things over there?"
From the kitchen, Inko turned her head back to look at Camilla again when she heard that Ryukyu was talking to her.
"Right. Well, we just had dinner here and it was one of if not the best thing I've ever eaten. Izuku's mom is an amazing cook."
On the other side of the communicator, Ryukyu was smiling knowing her guest had a good time.
"That's nice to hear. Now can I speak to him?"
Wordlessly, Camilla held the communicator out to Izuku and he took it into his own hand, remembering how to use it. Still nervous to talk to the number nine hero he was, but he was a bit better this time considering his mind was still on his full belly.
"Good evening, Miss Ryukyu." Izuku greeted.
"Hello, Midoriya. Thank you again for letting Camilla go to your house with you."
"Oh it's no problem at all, ma'am. She's cool to hang out with."
"That's great to hear. But anyway, I'm ready to come and pick her up so would you mind giving me your address?"
Pick her up? As in….come there? To his house? In person? Just like that Izuku was up in his chair sitting straight as the mere thought of having a top ten hero at his door overpowered the fullness in his stomach. Inko was right there along with him though she was more surprised to hear that Camilla's current guardian wasn't a family member but the number nine hero.
"Right….my uh…address….its uh….The Jedha Tower Apartments Complex. Apartment 2G."
"I know where those are. I'll be there soon to get her. Thank you again."
The conversation ended and Izuku handed the communicator back to Camilla while she looked at him oddly after the name drop of his home.
"Jedha? First Geonosis street now….maybe it's just coincidence."
Shaking that thought off, she attempted to stand up and succeeded in doing so. She still had a few minutes before the dragoon hero arrived there to pick her up.
"Do you need any help with the dishes, Mrs. Midoriya?"
When she received no answer after a few seconds, the girl turned around thinking maybe she didn't hear her ask the question. The Jedi was about to ask again but noticed Inko wasn't standing at the dishes washing, them, she was at the doorway to the kitchen and a lot of surprise was easily sensed from the mother.
"Mrs. Midoriya?" Camilla was only slightly concerned.
"Your guardian…is Ryukyu?" Inko barely managed to ask it.
Almost immediately Camilla understood as she remembered an important fact about this world.
"Right. Heroes are celebrities here."
"Yeah. She's uh…she's letting me stay at her building for a while until things with me get fully sorted out."
"Sorted out? Are you in some sort of trouble?" Inko sounded worried there.
"No nothing like that. It's just…" Camilla sighed. This was not something she wanted to get into. "…it's very complicated. And it's not something I'm really fond of repeating right now. I hope you understand."
After spending a few hours with Inko, it was clear to Camilla that she would not take the news that she was an orphaned alien with a mystical power that wasn't a quirk very well. It would probably mentally destroy the poor woman. Izuku though, she was still on the fence about him. He was her friend yes but she still needed time to think about telling him. Maybe one day in the future but definitely not now.
Inko could thankfully sense though that the subject was making Camilla uncomfortable. She didn't like not knowing things a lot of times but she did just meet this girl today. And she's Izuku's first real friend in years. So that earned her a pass. For now at least.
"Alright, Camilla. I won't force anything out of you." Inko relented. "But do promise me you'll stay out of trouble. The last thing I need is to worry about a second kid who just goes running into danger like this one tends to do."
"It was one time, Mom. And Kacchan was in trouble! Death Arms and Kamui Woods tore into me already about it!"
Camilla was about to question what Izuku was even talking about but decided against it. She just answered Inko.
"Well I'll certainly try to keep that promise. But you have to understand I can't one hundred percent assure you I can. After all, if Izuku and I are going to become heroes, then won't danger be kind of our daily routine?"
That was the best way she could answer Inko without saying that she had fought for two years on the front lines of a war far away and regularly avoided death multiple times a day with her master. Again, it would probably destroy the woman. Camilla did hear a sigh coming from her though before she responded back.
"I know." Inko answered. "But I'm a mother. I love my son more than anything in this world. And I guess I still have a habit that I carried over from his younger days."
Camilla tilted her head, a bit confused.
"What habit is that?"
Inko just smiled, even though she knew the girl couldn't see it.
"Any kid whose friends with my son I treat like they're my kid too."
That line brought about some new feelings Camilla couldn't ever remember feeling. Inko just said that being friends with Izuku meant she would treat the young Jedi as if she were her child as well? She couldn't wrap her head around that. Camilla never knew her own mother. She couldn't even remember what her parents voices sounded like since they were killed so young. The only parental figures she could remember in her life were her older brother Cayden and Master Morlev. R3 didn't count. The droid was just her friend. Still though, the idea of having both a friend and someone like a mother in her life felt really…good. She didn't even notice the smile on her face grew a little bit more when Inko said that to her.
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!*
The front door being knocked on caused all three current occupants in the apartment to turn their heads toward it.
"That must be Ryukyu." Camilla surmised as she sensed the dragoon hero on the other side of it.
Suddenly the two Midoriya's grew very nervous as Camilla walked to the front door and opened it up. The two of them slowly joined the young Padawan and stood behind her as she did so. Sure enough, there was Ryukyu in full costume and her famous mask covering one side of her face. The sight of her caused Inko and Izuku to go stiff. The number nine hero in all of Japan was at their doorstep.
"Was everything alright out in the ocean?" Camilla asked the pro hero.
"Yes. In fact I need to talk to you about that later." Ryukyu told her before looking to the Midoriyas.
Her eyes locked first on Izuku.
"So this is the kid All Might is teaching. He…doesn't look like much. Then again it's not fair to judge someone upon first sight. Already learned that lesson with Camilla."
"Thank you both for letting her come over." She said to both of them.
Immediately both of them bowed.
"It's no trouble at all!" Izuku didn't mean to shout.
"She was a delight to have!" Inko didn't either.
Ryukyu chuckled at their response while Camilla went over to put on her shoes to leave.
"So you are Izuku right? Camilla's told me some interesting things about you."
The boy in question stood right back up straight when the number nine hero used his name again.
"Right! Uhhh….um…..one second!"
Izuku zipped off to his room and returned only a second later with a charred notebook in his hands.
"CanIhaveyourautograph?!"
He said it so fast but Ryukyu had heard that question asked so many times she could recognize it no matter what speed it was said at. Smiling, she took the pen Izuku offered her and signed her name down on a blank page. Satisfied, Izuku gawked over the new addition to his book.
"Thank you very much, Ryukyu!"
"It's no problem at all. After all if you're Camilla's friend now, then something tells me I'm going to be seeing you more often."
The idea that Izuku would get to know another pro hero on a bit of a personal level made Izuku very excited. Inko too was sharing that feeling. She didn't know about All Might but Ryukyu at this point was probably enough for her to handle. Izuku feared that if his mother ever found out about All Might and the truth behind One For All, she might short circuit and just refuse to function. He was very thankful that Camilla did not say anything tonight that would even hint towards that even being a thing.
When her shoes were back on her feet, Camilla passed by the Midoriyas and joined Ryukyu at her side.
"Ready to go?" The dragoon hero wanted to be sure she had everything.
Camilla checked herself over. Belt, sunglasses, lightsaber, everything was there.
"Yeah. All set." She confirmed.
Nodding, both of them looked back at Izuku and Inko.
"Thanks again for having me over. Again, the food was amazing." Camilla said.
Inko flashed a warm smile to the young Jedi.
"You're more than welcome to come over again anytime, sweetie." Inko stated that as a fact.
Ryukyu was smiling now too. Her idea seemed to be bearing fruit. Camilla and Izuku now were officially friends it seemed. Good. The more people her age she gets to know, the easier it will be for her to transition into living on this planet.
"Have a good night, Camilla." Izuku bid to his new friend.
"You too, Izuku. Is it alright if I come find you tomorrow after school again?" The blind teen asked.
Izuku said yes quite enthusiastically to that. Happy and satisfied, everyone said good night one last time before Ryukyu and Camilla made their way to the elevator. Inko and Izuku watched them go all the way down until the elevator closed and they were no longer out of sight.
"So….quick question." Inko turned to her son. "Her eyes. Is being blind a thing that runs in her family?"
Izuku turned to her mother more than confused at the question.
"Umm…I didn't even think to ask that. Why?"
"Oh nothing really. Just asking because I'm curious about my grandchildren possibly being blind too. I'll love them regardless though."
"Oh. Well no I don't think that would be….."
It took Izuku longer than he was proud to admit to register what his mother just said to him as the door closed behind him. When he turned back to look at her, Inko had the biggest shit eating grin on her face looking dead at her son. That grin only grew as she watched Izuku turn red from head to toe and steam burst out of his ears.
"MOM I SWEAR TO ALL MIGHT IT ISN'T LIKE THAT!"
Inko fell to the floor laughing and continued to do so while her son tried in vain to make her stop.
Down at the ground level, Ryukyu and Camilla were just outside the front gate to the apartment complex. When they heard what they were sure was a horrified shriek, they turned back. Ryukyu was certain that voice was Izuku's and based on the words he used; she had a slight idea of what caused him to freak out. It made her smirk. Camilla on the other hand had no idea what Izuku was saying. She was more focused at the moment on the huge amount of embarrassment she felt flooding out through the Midoriya's door.
Shaking their minds off that, Ryukyu looked around and made sure no one was coming, pedestrian or vehicle, and gestured for the Jedi with her to stand back. When she was a good enough distance away, Ryukyu placed a hand to her mask and transformed into her dragon body.
"Hop on." She told Camilla.
Shrugging, Camilla took a few steps forward and Force jumped onto Ryukyu's enormous back and climbed up to where the dragon's neck met the shoulders. Grabbing onto the hem of Ryukyu's costume at the neck, Camilla signaled she was ready and Ryukyu took off into the sky. She didn't fly too high up but high enough where people wouldn't notice she was carrying a passenger on her back. When she was at a steady cruising altitude, she turned her head back a bit to talk.
"The ring that detached from your ship is at the warehouse with it now."
Underneath the sunglasses she put back on, Camilla's eyes were wide open.
"The hyperdrive ring?! You got it back?!" She had to yell since they were high up and flying a bit fast against the wind.
"Yes. I'll take you and your droid there in a couple days to survey the damage and see if anything could be repaired."
"A couple days?! Why not tomorrow?!"
Ryukyu turned her head back away to look forward again.
"Tomorrow you're going to be with Mirko for most of the day." She started. "I got a call this afternoon. I sent in a request for you me and her to be given clearance to go somewhere isolated so we can officially begin your training for U.A. That clearance ends the moment the entrance exam comes around so we have to make the most out of the time we have. Trust me. It's gonna pass faster than you'll know. I'll take you to your ship on the weekend."
"I can understand that! But why can't you just take me to see it after Mirko and I are done training for the day?!"
The next thing Ryukyu said was flowing with pity for the girl riding on her back.
"Let's just say when she's done with you, you'll be lucky if you're not too sore to walk the Midoriya boy home again.
When they got back to the agency, Camilla went to sleep far more concerned about tomorrow than Ryukyu wanted her to be. Better she got into it prepared she assumed. Tomorrow was another day, and that day was gonna be rough for the Jedi. Of this, Ryukyu was certain. Her friend would make sure of it.
