"How do I look?" Reyna asked as she adjusted the tuxedo. Hylla looked at her and slowly stood. She walked toward Reyna and fixed her tie.
"You look great, Reyna. You really do," Hylla said. She tucked some of Reyna's hair behind her ear. "I'm proud of you."
"Oh," Reyna muttered. She stared at her sister and wasn't sure what to say. Then, she quickly turned. "I should go."
Reyna turned away, and she stepped forward. Hylla grabbed her forearm and kept her from walking away, "Are you seriously going to run away from this conversation? Because it has to do with emotions?"
"I'm sorry," Reyna muttered with a sigh. She hung her head. "I'm really bad at these conversations."
"I can tell," Hylla retorted as she adjusted Reyna's tuxedo again. "Why?"
"I don't know," Reyna admitted. "I guess that I spent so long never dealing with my emotions that I am so, so bad at it now."
Hylla nodded her agreement, but Reyna scowled. Hylla kissed her forehead, "I know that the two of us like to run from our feelings. You need to stop doing that."
"But not you?" Reyna grumbled as Hylla put the finishing touches on her tuxedo.
"Nope," Hylla responded.
"Why are you in such a good mood anyway?" Reyna questioned as she started to take the tuxedo off. The charity event was in three weeks, and Chiron wanted to make sure that everything fit those volunteering as servers. The event seemed to be important to Chiron. Reyna wanted to do a great job for him. "Also, what happened to your nose?"
"Got punched in the face because one of the hunters realized I was in Exterminata," Hylla revealed as she waved her hand. "And, Thalia asked me to be her new partner."
"You really going to do this whole hunter thing?" Reyna asked as she carefully laid the tuxedo out on the bed. She slipped on pants and grabbed her shirt for the bar. One hand moved to her jaw. Her lip was hurting her, and it wasn't just the memories.
"Why not?" Hylla shrugged. She leaned against the dresser, but her eyes stayed glued to Reyna's side. Reyna held onto her shirt, finding herself unable to put it on just yet. "I have experience with it."
"Are you able to restrain yourself from killing them?" Reyna questioned. Hylla didn't answer. "I'm serious. I don't want you to make the mistake of going off instinct and killing a creature."
"I won't," Hylla promised. "I already got a whole spiel about how I'll be working in the office for a few months before I get official training. Only then am I allowed to go out to crime scenes with Thalia. So, I'm a glorified report writer."
"Could be worse," Reyna rebutted. She sighed as Hylla did not move her eyes. "Will you just ask already?"
"What happened?" Hylla questioned in a quiet voice. Reyna traced the three scars that Otrera had reopened. She winced in pain and looked down.
"Grandma," Reyna answered. A glance up showed the confusion on Hylla's face. "When I ran from home, I found mom's pack. And the alpha of the pack hated the fact that I was alive. She wanted me to fight her to the death. I got my ass kicked, and she tore open my side before Exterminata interrupted."
"And, you were older?" Hylla asked in a hopeful voice. Her knuckles whitened as she clenched her fist.
"No," Reyna replied. "It was the same week."
"Fuck," Hylla cursed as she hung her head.
"Stop with the guilt," Reyna ordered. She put on her shirt and laid back on the bed. "Let's just get this on the table. I got the scars on my side from grandma. She was a bitch. What about the one on your leg?"
"Werewolf took a bite out of it. He was an idiot," Hylla explained. She pointed to her bicep. "Got shot with a crossbow during training. It fucking hurt. What about your thigh?"
"Shit. I don't remember actually," Reyna admitted. She pressed her lips together and tried to remember. "I think I stole something and hopped a fence. I didn't have the right momentum, and the top of the fence cut my leg. I also saw that scar on your foot."
"I stepped on a knife," Hylla muttered. Reyna laughed. "It wasn't my fault! When I was in basic training, someone dumbass left a knife on the ground. I had to get up in the middle of the night and stepped right on it. What about your left thumb?"
"Bit down on it as I was cleaning a wound," Reyna replied. "It was already infected, enough to give me a fever. I wasn't paying attention to how hard I bit down. There's a few across your back."
Hylla fell silent and looked away. A frown slipped onto Reyna's face as she sat up and studied her sister. Hylla finally spoke, "Punishment for failure."
"Fuck," Reyna muttered. Hylla nodded.
"One of the instructors loved to use his belt like he was a parent hitting a child. Another instructor stopped the lashing before there was permanent damage," Hylla explained.
"A scar is pretty permanent," Reyna commented. She got out of bed and grabbed her jacket. Reyna carefully stretched. She was watching the door for the day.
"And your lip?" Hylla prompted. Reyna fell silent. "Unless you don't want to talk about it."
"There was this Succubus," Reyna said after a few moments. She took a deep breath. "Promise me that you aren't going to mope and blame yourself again."
"I promise."
"Alright," Reyna began. She swallowed painfully. "I was on the run for a long time, and I ended up getting involved in a small crime ring. Just as their runner. Then, they introduced me to this Succubus, and she offered me a place to stay. A place to stop running and settle down."
"It was too good to be true," Reyna continued. "All I had to do was deliver a few packages for her everyday. It slowly grew in responsibility, and then, I ended up signing a contract with her. It really fucked over my life, even if I didn't realize it at first. The jobs grew a little more dangerous and a little longer before I broke my arm during one of them. The Succubus told me she had another job for me. One that would be safer."
Reyna trailed off and felt bile rise in the back of her throat. She swallowed painfully, "I had been on the run for so long, and I thought I finally found a safe place. I thought she would do what was right for me. I fucking misread that situation."
"I was her toy for a little bit. Her favorite one. She grew tired of me at one point and wanted me to take on a client. I tried, but I freaked out during the middle of it. He got pissed off, and…"
"I didn't want to do it again after that, and when I said that," Reyna muttered as she motioned to her face. "That bitch marked me for the first time, and she kept doing it anytime I disobeyed her. She found plenty of clients for me to sleep with. Ones that could get the most use out of a werewolf."
"If I refused, she would withhold water and food from me, after marking me. I don't know how I never saw her cruelty before. How could I let myself get wrapped up like that?" Reyna ranted. She took a deep breath. "I think it went on for almost two years, and one day, I just lost it. I couldn't do it anymore. And I ran."
"I thought I got far enough away, but I ran into some trackers and got stabbed. I ran all the way here," Reyna explained. She sighed and hung her head. Hylla pulled her into a tight hug and held her close. Reyna slowly hugged her sister back.
"If that bitch ever tries to lay a hand on you again," Hylla swore. She was shaking in anger. Reyna remained silent as she buried her face into Hylla's shoulder as tears touched her eyes. "Fuck, Reyna. I'm so sorry."
Reyna couldn't find words, so she just nodded. Hylla pulled away from the hug, but kept her arm around Reyna's shoulder as they walked into the living room. She grabbed her keys and led Reyna outside to the car.
"I'm going to buy something for dinner," Hylla offered. "Do you want me to stop by on your break and give it to you? Or wait until you get home?"
"You can just wait until I get home," Reyna whispered. She cleared her throat and wiped her eyes. "Remember how we talked about running from our feelings? I kind of did that with Jason. He told me that he has a crush on me."
"And, you ran away?" Hylla asked as they sat in the car.
"I actually told him that I needed to get to work," Reyna answered. "And have avoided him ever since. So... yeah. I don't know."
"Do you like him?" Hylla asked. Reyna shrugged.
"I mean, I like having sex with him. He listens and respects me. He's cute and nice. I just haven't ever dated anyone. I don't even know how to do that. And I don't know if I like him. I don't know," Reyna groaned as she threw her head back against the headrest. "Why are feelings so fucking complicated?"
"I don't know," Hylla admitted. "You shouldn't run, though. Try to talk to him about it today if he's there. Alright?"
"Yeah," Reyna agreed half-heartedly. She glanced at Hylla. "I'm proud of you too, Hylla. You're really opening up. Not just to me, but other creatures."
"Don't remind me," Hylla grunted. Reyna smiled slightly. "I'm doing my best."
"That's all we can do, right?" Reyna said. Hylla nodded. "I will talk to Jason. Hopefully, I won't run away this time."
"I give it a fifty-fifty shot," Hylla remarked with a small smirk. Reyna nodded her agreement and looked out the window. She closed her eyes and rested her head against it. Reyna wasn't sure how the conversation would go. She just hoped Jason didn't hate her.
