WHAT IF? - SEASON 1 EPISODE 4 - WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS?
1. Int. The Dot. Evening.
Sean is trying to study, while Spinner is closing up. He´s frustrated, that he´s not getting it.
Sean:
I´m throwing in the towel!
Spinner:
It´s not that I mind having company, but it´s closing time.
Sean:
I might as well go home and hope, that my neighbors are done doing it.
Spinner smiles to himself.
Spinner:
Are they that loud?
Sean:
Yesterday, my furniture started shaking!
Spinner:
Don´t you wish, it were you?
Sean:
What do you think? With Ellie hating me and Emma putting me in the doghouse, it´s not like there´s a whole lot of action these days.
Spinner:
I can introduce you to one of Amy´s friends.
Sean:
As tempting as that is, I have more than enough problems with the two girls, I´m involved with ... or don´t know, if I´m involved with anymore! This whole thing is downright confusing!
Spinner:
We all have our problems. I´m introducing Amy to the gang tomorrow.
Sean:
Amy and your friends? As in Paige, Hazel ...
Spinner:
As in that group of friends. I´m more than a bit worried over, how it will go.
Sean:
I would be too! It´s got recipe for disaster written all over it!
Spinner:
This could be a birthday to remember!
He looks nervous over it.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Sean is walking down the hallway, looking pretty miserable. He sees Ellie talking to Ashley by her locker and works up the nerve to walk over to her.
Sean:
Hey, Ellie. Can we talk?
Ellie:
I have no idea, what we would talk about.
Sean:
I don´t want to leave things, the way we did. I still care about you.
Ellie:
You have a funny way of showing it!
Ashley:
Leave her alone, Creep!
Sean:
Ellie, please!
Ellie:
I have nothing left to say to you, Sean.
He´s annoyed, but takes the hint and leaves her. She´s clearly upset at the whole thing.
Ellie:
Why do I still like him, despite what he did?
Ashley:
I felt the same way about Craig for a long time, after he cheated on me with Manny. It´ll go away soon, you´ll see.
Ellie:
Good, because it´s like having teeth pulled!
Ashley:
Look on the bright side. At least tonight, you can get your mind off him.
Ellie:
I don´t know, if I want to go.
Ashley:
It´s Spinner´s birthday. You have to be there!
Ellie:
It´s just, being around a whole lot of people again ...
Ashley:
Which is exactly what you need! You like to hide away in that little shell of yours and I´m not letting you do it this time! You´re having fun tonight, whether you like it or not!
Ellie sees that there´s no use in arguing, so she smiles and goes along with it.
3. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Paige and Hazel are sitting by their PC´s, waiting for class to start and gossiping.
Hazel:
What a fashion disaster!
Paige:
Did you see Heather Sinclair´s new haircut?
Hazel:
I couldn´t decide, if it was a haystack or a bees nest!
They laugh, but it stops, when Amy comes in and takes a seat on the opposite side of the room.
Paige:
Can you believe, that we´re forced to spend an evening with her?
Hazel:
Is it racist of me, to call her "White Trash?".
Paige:
If the shoe fits ...
Spinner comes in and walks over to them.
Spinner:
We´ve made a deal with the pizza place, that they´ll deliver them at seven sharp. Unless you want cold pizza, you´d better be on time.
Paige:
No chance of that happening. We´re all looking forward to it, Spin.
Hazel:
Anything in particular, you´re wishing for?
Spinner:
You don´t have to get me anything. I have my girl and I have my friends back. What else could a guy wish for?
He leaves them to go and sit next to Amy, who gets a good morning kiss from him.
Hazel:
Would you kiss those lips, if you knew, where they´d been?
Paige:
Not on your life!
They force themselves to look away from it, when the teacher arrives.
4. Int. Hallway. Day.
Jay is trying to pick change out the vending machine with a bent wire hanger, when Amy comes over to him.
Amy:
Any luck?
Jay:
Nah. It´s been sucked dry.
He hides the wire hanger away in his pocket and they walk away from the scene of the crime.
Amy:
Are you coming to Spinner´s party?
Jay:
I prefer being around people, I can stand!
Amy:
I know, what you mean. I´m seriously considering faking an illness or a sudden emergency.
Jay:
Aren´t you known for being a party girl?
Amy:
If it´s parties like the ones, I´m used to going to, with people I know. Parties with people, I know look down on me and would rather spend the night in jail, than within fifty feet of me, I can do without!
Jay:
You could make new friends.
He has to contain himself from laughing, as he says it.
Amy:
You don´t think, I can?
Jay:
You´re great at making friends! When you´re both drunk.
Amy:
Stop walking for a sec.
Jay stops walking and she looks him in the eyes.
Amy:
I can make friends, sober or not!
Jay:
They´ll never accept you into their precious clique! Do you see yourself going shopping with Paige or on a double date with Jimmy and Hazel? They´ll talk about you behind your back and treat you like dirt, because that´s what overprivileged pieces of trash do.
Amy:
Spinner isn´t like that.
Jay:
Because he´s as dirt poor, as we are. We belong with our kind and his so-called friends with theirs. There´s no middle ground.
Amy:
Just to prove you wrong, I will make a friend at that party!
Jay looks intrigued.
Jay:
Ten bucks say, you won´t.
Amy:
I´ll walk right up to you tomorrow with her or him and make you pay up!
Jay:
I almost wish, I could be there to see it!
She walks away from him, looking stubborn. Jay looks pleased.
Jay:
Easiest ten bucks, you´ve ever made!
He saunters off to class and pick pockets a kid on the way.
5. Int. Ellie´s Room. Evening.
Ellie is getting ready to go to Spinner´s party, when Ashley comes in. She smiles at how pretty Ellie looks.
Ashley:
Dishing out the make-up! Anyone special, you´re looking to impress?
Ellie:
Won´t every guy there be taken?
Ashley:
I don´t know about Marco.
They laugh.
Ellie:
I´ve been down that road one too many times!
Ashley:
You haven´t exactly been lucky in love, have you?
Ellie:
I´m hoping for better luck with the next one. Unless, I end up back with Sean.
Ashley:
You don´t want to go down that path, do you?
Ellie:
I miss him. Most of all I miss holding him and feeling him close to me.
Ashley:
He couldn´t wait five minutes to cheat on you, after you walked out the door. Doesn´t that tell you everything, you need to know?
Ellie:
I suppose so. It´s party time, isn´t it? So let´s stop talking about our depressing love lives and try that crazy thing called life!
Ellie tries to make it appear, like she´s fine. Ashley can see though, that it´s still a work in progress.
6. Int. Spinner´s House. Evening.
Banners have been hung up to celebrate Spinner´s 17th birthday. He´s in a great mood and opens Amy´s present for him. It´s a set of drum sticks.
Amy:
I wish, I could afford to get you drums. You mentioned, that the ones you had were worn down.
Spinner:
I broke one yesterday, so it´s perfect timing. Awesome! Thanks.
They kiss.
Amy:
If you´d still been with Paige, then she would have given you some expensive gift.
Spinner:
I wouldn´t have been as happy, as I am with you.
She looks sad, to his surprise.
Spinner:
What´s the matter?
Amy:
I don´t deserve someone as nice and caring, as you are. Let´s face it, I´ll never fit into your world.
Spinner:
My world is whatever I want it to be. If they won´t accept you, then I´ll do the same to them.
Amy:
You say that now, but ...
Spinner:
There´s no but´s here!
Amy:
Except for the two, we have!
She smiles and looks a little cheered up.
Spinner:
It´s not like they´re from Mars and you´re from Venus. Paige and Hazel can be very nice, when they want to be.
Amy:
I need to see it, before I believe it!
The doorbell rings.
Spinner´s Mom (off screen):
HONEY! YOUR GUESTS ARE HERE!
Spinner:
You think, you have something to be embarrassed over! Praise yourself lucky, that you don´t have my mom to ruin your cool!
He leaves her and lets the first of the party guests in. She braces herself for what´s to come.
7. Int. Pharmacy. Evening.
Sean is in line at the pharmacy, Emma comes in and they see each other. They smile at each other, as she hurries along and he gets to the front of the line.
Sean:
A bottle of Aspirin.
The pharmacist gets to work finding it for him.
8. Int. Mall. Evening.
Emma comes out from the pharmacy to find Sean waiting for her.
Emma:
Someone might get the idea, that you´re following me.
Sean:
I guarantee, that it was pure coincidence. Brought about by incessant sounds of love making, coming from my neighbors.
He shows her the bottle and it makes her smile. She shows him her bottle of baby formula.
Emma:
My little brother has a tummy ache, or my mom thinks he does. It was an excuse to get out the house.
Sean:
Are you in a hurry, or do you want to split a pizza?
Emma:
I´m not big on Pizza´s these days, but I´ll eat something healthy with you.
Sean:
Healthy? You seriously want me to eat health food?
Emma:
It´ll be good for you, considering all the junk, you keep putting into that ever growing gut of yours!
Sean:
You´re sassy today! I like it!
They head off to find a place to eat.
9. Int. Food Court. Evening.
Emma and Sean are enjoying a Falafel.
Sean:
It´s seriously just chick peas?
Emma:
What gave you the idea, that healthy food can´t taste good?
Sean:
When did you start eating healthy?
Emma:
We started doing it at home for Snake´s sake, when he was sick. You could say, it´s become a lifestyle choice. The thought of all of those toxins, I was putting into my body, makes me cringe!
Sean:
It´s probably better, that you´ve rid your life of toxic things. Like me, for instance.
Emma:
You´re not toxic, Sean. You´re one of the best things in my life, despite everything that´s happened over the last year. I had to keep my distance, after what happened. I felt like a fool.
Sean:
I was the fool. Would you have gone through with it?
Emma:
Probably. I´m still not opposed to it, in case you´re wondering.
She takes a sip from her water bottle and winks at him. He smiles back at her.
10. Int. Spinner´s House. Evening.
The party is going well and Amy is keeping close to Spinner. They´re talking to Craig and Manny.
Spinner:
How´s life at "Casa De Joey?".
Manny:
Better than it was before. I´m not saying, that being a teenage mom is easy, but Joey and Caitlin make it as easy on us, as they can.
Craig:
Joey sees it, as him having two daughters now.
Amy:
That´s nice. I went in and out of foster care for most of my childhood. I never found a family, it felt right with.
Manny:
I have to admit, that you´re not how I pictured you, Amy.
Amy:
How did you picture me?
Manny:
As some kind of wild party girl, I guess.
Amy:
The party has to end sometime.
Marco comes over to them.
Marco:
That is the absolute worst thing, you can say at a party! I need a dance partner, since my boyfriend decided to turn boring on me. Do you dance, Amy?
Amy:
Not well!
Spinner:
You´ve got a few sweet moves! I´ve seen it!
Marco:
Let´s see them!
He grabs her hand and leads her out on the floor. They start dancing and she´s a bit of a mess, compared to Marco.
Marco:
You´re doing good! Keep at it!
She dances with and looks like, she´s enjoying herself.
Spinner:
What about you, Manny? Care to dance?
Manny:
I´d love to, Spinner.
She takes his hand and they join the other two on the dancefloor.
11. Ext. Spinner´s House. Evening.
Ellie is outside, getting a break from the party, when Terri comes out.
Terri:
You needed a break too, huh?
Ellie:
Ashley was up in arms about me coming, but it´s too soon. You probably heard, what happened with Sean and Emma.
Terri:
Did you know, that Spinner and I almost became a couple, right before him and Paige did?
Ellie:
No, I didn´t.
Terri:
I had plans to go to a dance with him and we´d been flirting for a while. It must have been the year before, you started at Degrassi.
Ellie:
What happened?
Terri:
Paige got me drunk, because she wanted him to herself. I made a complete fool of myself at that dance and I never had the courage to ask him out again.
Ellie:
I can´t say, I´m too surprised! You still stayed friends with them. Why?
Terri:
Forever is a long time to keep things bottled up. Most of us will never see each other again, after we leave High School. I´d like to start out with a clean slate, when that time comes.
Ellie gets an idea.
Ellie:
Tell Ashley and Spinner that I´m sorry, but I have something important to do!
Terri:
Okay.
Ellie starts running away from her.
Terri:
Don´t you have your coat inside?
Ellie comes running back to her.
Ellie:
Thanks for reminding me!
Terri:
You´re welcome.
Ellie hurries inside and Terri enjoys a breath of fresh air.
12. Int. Spinner´s House. Evening.
Amy is done dancing with Marco and is trying to catch her breath.
Amy:
I´m danced out for now!
Dylan comes over to them.
Dylan:
You look like someone, who needs to be relieved.
Amy:
In a big way!
She hands Marco off to Dylan and they start dancing. She walks over to Spinner, who´s talking to Jimmy and Craig.
Craig:
If you guys are open to starting the band up again ...
Spinner:
Do you have time for it?
Amy:
What are we talking about?
Spinner:
Starting the band up again.
Jimmy:
Those weren´t half bad moves, Amy!
Amy:
Thanks. Do you dance?
Jimmy:
Do I dance?
He does a few fancy Michael Jackson dance moves to impress her.
Amy:
Very impressive! I´m getting a drink. Do you want one?
Spinner:
A root beer, but can you get a cold one from the fridge?
Amy:
Sure.
She gives him a kiss on the cheek and leaves them.
Jimmy:
I gotta admit, she´s fitting in nicely.
Spinner:
I was kinda worried over it.
Craig:
Manny likes her. Then again, Manny likes almost everyone!
They all nod in agreement on the matter.
13. Int. Kitchen. Evening.
Paige and Hazel are talking, now they have some private time.
Paige:
Did you see her try to dance?
Hazel:
Like a drunken giraf!
Paige:
You´re so mean!
Hazel:
When will he wake up and see, that she´s a walking disaster?
Paige:
Love really does make a guy blind!
Amy comes out into the kitchen, having clearly heard all of it.
Amy:
What´s that supposed to mean?
Paige and Hazel get defensive towards her.
Paige:
We were just talking amongst ourselves. It has nothing to do with you.
Amy:
I´m a walking disaster?
Hazel:
I didn´t mean it like that!
Amy:
Do you think, all of us were born with the kind of privileges, you have? I´ve been through things, that would give you nightmares, if I told you about them!
Paige:
We´re sure, you have, Hon. We´re sorry.
Amy:
The thing is, I don´t believe you! I believe, that the moment I´m out of here, you´ll be back to backtalking me, because that´s what bitchy girls like you do!
Hazel:
We don´t do that!
Paige makes eye contact with her. There´s no reason to lie too much.
Hazel:
Okay, but it´s not all we do!
Paige:
If you´d be willing to, then we´d really like to start over. No mean girl talking behind each other´s backs, which I´m sure you do with us too.
Amy:
I can´t say, I´m completely innocent of it. Look, I came here tonight to make friends. I suppose, we can start over.
Hazel:
What if we start by getting to know each other, before we form an opinion?
Paige:
What a novel concept!
Hazel:
Amy, I´m Hazel Aden and I was born in Somalia. Me and my parents came here as refugees and I´m not anywhere near as privileged, as you think I am. I´m just another girl at Degrassi trying my best, so I can go off to college and not have to rely on a man, like the women back in Somalia are forced to. I´m also a Muslim, which poses it´s own problems.
Paige:
I´m Paige Michalchuk and I admittedly used to be a mean girl, but I´m trying to better myself. I love my boyfriend JT, even though he can be kind of a dork sometimes. Luckily for him, I find it adorable. I also owe Spinner a lot of money for damaging his car, so I work as a popcorn girl at a movie theater. Trust me, Hon. My life is far from glamorous.
Amy:
I´m Amy Peters-Hoffman and I haven´t had the easiest of lives. My mom died when I was two and my dad has been in jail since I was eight. I went from one foster home to the next growing up. Some were bad, while others were more inviting. I live with an old friend of my mom´s and I´m terrible at making friends with girls, but I´m willing to give it a try, if you are.
The three girls smile at each other.
14. Int. Sean´s Apartment. Evening.
Ellie, Emma and Sean are calmly talking things out.
Ellie:
I was sure, you went right to it, after I left.
Emma:
I left less than a minute later. I swear.
Sean:
I want us all to go on as friends from here. Is that possible?
Emma:
It is on my part. I assure you, Ellie. I´m not someone, who wants to be seen as the other girl.
Sean:
For what it´s worth, she asked me if we´d broken up, before she took her dress off.
Emma:
I´m really sorry, you felt hurt.
Ellie:
I believe you. Both of you. We can try to move on.
Sean looks relieved.
15. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Sean is talking to Craig, as they get ready to go to their first class.
Craig:
You missed a great party.
Sean:
I had a sit down with Ellie and Emma.
Craig:
How did it go?
Sean:
Pretty good. We all agreed to move on.
Craig:
Who of them are you gonna date?
Sean:
I haven´t thought that far ahead. Ellie and me feels more or less finished. She´s a great girl and I´d like to stay friends with her, but the passion has never been there.
Craig:
You´re going for it with Emma?
Sean:
I guess, I am!
He takes it in and they head off to class.
16. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Jay is looking confident, that the ten bucks will soon be his, when Amy comes in, happily chatting with Paige and Hazel. It makes his jaw drop, as they walk over to him.
Amy:
I´d like you to meet my two new friends, Jay.
Jay:
You paid them, to do this!
Paige:
She didn´t have to.
Hazel:
The weirdest thing happened. We got to talking and found out, that we´re not all that different.
Jay:
It won´t last, Amy.
Amy:
What do you know? It´s not like I see you, with a ton of friends. Pay up!
Jay reluctantly pays her and she goes to sit with Paige and Hazel.
17. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Emma is walking to class, when Sean comes running to catch up with her.
Sean:
Whew! That was a nice bit of morning exercise!
Emma:
Did the health food give you more energy?
Sean:
To be honest, I ate a couple of candy bars, after you left.
Emma:
I never said, I expected you to be perfect.
Sean:
Listen, do you want to go on a date with me? Or I could cook in the apartment and we could have a date there. Whatever you want.
Emma:
You´re sure, Ellie won´t interrupt us this time?
Sean:
No one says, we have to do THAT.
Emma:
No, but I´m thinking, it might be time to. When and where?
Sean:
Friday, my place at seven? I´ll cook us something nice, I promise.
Emma:
It´s a date!
Sean:
This will be an evening, you´ll never forget, for all the right reasons.
They smile at each other.
