1. Int. Darcy´s Room. Day.
Darcy is over the moon at getting the part and is doing a little victory dance, when Clare comes in.
Clare:
Mom wants to know, if you need anything from the store.
It´s an awkward moment between them, as Darcy stops dancing.
Clare:
You have to tell me what happened!
Darcy:
Guess who´s playing Juliet in Degrassi´s modern re-telling of the play?
Clare:
You? Can you act?
Darcy:
The directors seem to think so and Craig believes in me.
Clare:
His name is Craig, huh? Do you think, he likes you?
Darcy:
I don´t know. Maybe he´s being nice, because that´s how he always is.
Clare:
You really like him, don´t you?
Darcy:
He´s cute and nice. He´s one of those guys you just know, would make a perfect boyfriend. It´s no wonder, that I´m not the only girl, who likes him.
Clare:
You can get him, if you want to.
Darcy smiles.
Darcy:
Was that a compliment?
Clare:
Don´t let it go to your head, okay? You´re both pretty and nice, when you´re not kicking me out of your room, that is. Why wouldn´t he like you?
Darcy:
Maybe because there´s another girl in the picture, who´s known him longer than I have.
Clare:
You can use that to your advantage.
Darcy looks intrigued.
Darcy:
How do you figure?
Clare:
Hello? What´s new and mysterious is always exciting. Haven´t you seen any Rom Com´s?
Darcy gets an idea.
Darcy:
With him I can be, whoever I want to be. He doesn´t have to know, that I was a small town girl, who hasn´t tried anything. I take back everything, I´ve ever said about you being too smart for your own good, Clare!
Clare looks pleased.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Little Miss Steaks. Evening.
Darcy waves goodbye to a young couple, who have finished their dinner and are leaving.
Darcy:
Come again any time!
They wave goodbye to her and leave. Craig comes over to her.
Craig:
Your talents are wasted on waitressing. You should be a hostess.
His compliment makes her smile.
Darcy:
Do you think, I would be good at it?
Craig:
You would be a natural. Your people skills are top notch.
Darcy:
I guess, it comes from experience.
Craig:
From what?
Darcy sees that she has to think quick and comes up with a quick lie.
Darcy:
From playing in a band.
He looks at her with interest.
Craig:
You played in a band?
Darcy smiles, She might as well go along with the lie now.
Darcy:
Yeah. I was the singer and the only girl in the band. Talk about a situation, where your people skills get stretched to the max!
Craig:
Do you play an instrument?
Darcy shakes her head.
Darcy:
No, but I´d like to learn.
Craig:
I´m jamming with my friends Spinner and Marco after school tomorrow. You can come, if you want. I guarantee, that they won´t bite. They´re very nice guys and there´s no danger of them hitting on you, if that´s what you´re afraid of.
Darcy:
Sounds fun.
The restaurant manager comes over to them.
Manager:
I don´t pay you to stand around and play the mating game. There´s customers waiting.
Darcy:
Sorry.
The manager leaves them.
Craig:
My garage, four o´clock. Do you know the address?
Darcy:
I can get it later, We´d better get back to work.
Craig:
Yeah. I can´t wait to hear you sing.
He leaves her and her fake smile fades.
Darcy:
Neither can I!
She shakes her head and goes back to work.
3. Int. The Dot. Evening.
Paige and JT are going over the scripts, they have in front of them, while playing footsie under the table. Spinner comes over to them.
Spinner:
Can you keep it PG? There´s kids in here.
Paige:
Sorry, Spinner. We´re still in that "everything is new and exciting phase".
Spinner:
You know, that it´s not me, who´s the prude, but the boss ...
JT:
We get it. You´ve been very cool about this, so we won´t get you in trouble.
Spinner:
Much appreciated!
He leaves them and they get back to work. JT can´t concentrate though.
JT:
What did you mean, when you said the "new and exciting phase?". Is this just a phase, you´re going through?
Paige smiles at him re-assuredly
Paige:
I know, that you´re a beginner, when it comes to relationships. Which I practically am too, since I´ve only had one boyfriend, but I have learned a few things.
JT:
It´s not that I mind you rambling, but do you have a point?
Paige:
It´s not gonna be like this forever. What we´re going through now is like a super fun weekend. At some point, it becomes Monday and we move into the next phase.
JT:
The "not as exciting phase", is that what you´d call it?
Paige:
You can´t keep the excitement of the beginning of a relationship up forever! The next part, where we become each other´s best friends, will be also exciting, just in a different way.
JT:
I guess, I still have a lot to learn about this stuff.
Paige:
I´ll be happy to impart what limited wisdom I have on the subject. However, we probably should get some work done.
JT:
Yeah, of course.
Paige:
I was thinking that since Mercutio is now a girl, maybe we should make Tybalt one too. Otherwise, when they have their big fight, it´ll be a boy killing a girl and with Raditch being up in arms about it needing to be PC, yadda, yadda, yadda ...
JT:
We´ll look into it.
He tries to make it appear, that he isn´t worried and smiles it off.
4. Int. Manny´s Room. Evening.
JT is getting advice from Manny, while he´s playing with Julia, who clearly likes him and is comfortable around him.
Manny:
She likes you.
JT:
Babies are easy.
Manny:
You wouldn´t be saying that, if you were raising one!
JT:
All they want is food, love and a nap, when they need it. I wish, it was that easy with Paige.
Manny:
Isn´t it? You seem like a very uncomplicated couple.
JT:
Usually we are. We know how to make each other smile and we still haven´t had a fight or even said a hard word to each other.
Manny:
What´s complicated about that? It sounds to me, like you two have it made.
JT:
It stems from my lack of experience. She said that we´re still in the phase, where everything is new and exciting. She used those exact words.
Manny:
Isn´t she just speaking truth?
JT:
New and exciting is all, I have to offer her. Without that, why would she stay with me? What if this is a phase and she wakes up tomorrow and realizes, that she didn´t want me after all?
Manny:
Don´t you think, she could have gotten someone, who would better fit the profile for a boyfriend of a head cheerleader?
JT:
I guess so.
Manny:
You´re the one she gave her heart to. We haven´t always seen eye to eye, but even I can see how in love up to both ears, she is. If you continue to be yourself, then it´ll all work itself out.
JT:
You never gave me a chance, back when I had that crush on you. There must have been a reason.
Manny smiles warmly at him.
Manny:
If there hadn´t been a Craig and now a Julia, who got in the way of it, then I might have given you a chance.
JT:
You´re only saying that to make me feel better.
Manny:
When you first came up with the crazy idea, that you would get a date with her, did anyone except for you believe, that you would get it?
JT:
Not one.
Manny:
She still ended up saying yes, against almost impossible odds. Doesn´t that tell you something?
JT:
I still wish, she was as easy as Julia here.
He takes it in, as he tickles Julia´s tummy. She happily coos.
5. Ext. Degrassi. Morning.
Darcy arrives for school and sees Craig talking to Marco and Spinner outside. She walks over to them.
Craig:
Darcy, hi! These are the guys, you´ll be jamming with tonight. This is Marco and Spinner.
Marco:
I´m Marco. You can probably tell from looking at us, who the drummer is. You know how they are!
Spinner:
If you´re in any doubt who the bass player is, just follow the scent of cockiness, that comes from having the easiest job in the band and getting to look down on those, who have hard jobs, when they make mistakes!
Darcy:
Hi, guys.
She seems to like them already.
Marco:
Craig tells us, that you have experience from other bands.
Darcy:
Just one.
Spinner:
What kind of music did you play?
Darcy:
It was ... ehm ... kind of hard to explain. I guess you could call it fusion.
Craig:
Fusion of what?
Darcy:
You know, a bit of this and a bit of that.
Marco:
Did you play any gigs?
Darcy:
Yeah!
Spinner:
How many?
Darcy:
Oh, I don´t know. Fifty?
The boys make wide eyes.
Craig:
Fifty! We haven´t played ten between the three of us!
Spinner:
You´re 15 and you´ve played that many gigs? Are you some kind of child prodigy?
Darcy sees, that maybe fifty was a bit high and wants to get out of the conversation.
Darcy:
Look, I´d better get to class. See ya tonight!
She leaves them and they look impressed.
Marco:
You looked as surprised, as we did.
Craig:
I had no idea! I can´t wait to see, what she brings to the table.
Spinner:
Maybe we can get to play more than one gig this time around! Plus, she´s pretty easy on the eyes!
Craig:
Don´t you have a girlfriend?
Spinner:
A guy can´t look? Plus, I´m sure that most guys would rather look at her on a stage than the three of us!
Craig:
Except for Marco´s fan club, of course!
Marco:
Shut up! We´ll be late for class, if we don´t move it.
They head towards the school.
Spinner:
Are you thinking of having pink t-shirts made for them?
Marco:
Are you thinking of having grey ones made for yours, because you´re so bland?
Craig just shakes his head at their banter.
6. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Darcy is smiling to herself, while the miss Oh is talking. Chantay, who´s sitting next to her, can´t concentrate on class because her gossip loving mind is going on overdrive,
Chantay:
Why can´t you stop smiling and why did I see you talking to three hot grade 11 guys this morning?
Darcy (whispering):
I´m jamming with them tonight.
Chantay (whispering):
Is that what they call it, where you come from?
Darcy (whispering):
Not that! Playing music!
Chantay:
You and those guys?
The rest of the class suddenly pays attention to them, making them embarrassed.
Miss Oh:
Which guys would that be, Chantay? Or maybe it´s Darcy, I should be asking, since she seems to be the one, who knows them.
Darcy:
It´s just these three guys from grade 11, I know.
Miss Oh:
I´m sure, they´re a very fascinating subject to the two of you. Can you wait with the girl talk until after class?
Darcy:
Yes, miss Oh.
Chantay:
We´re sorry, we disrupted your class.
Miss Oh goes back to teaching. It´s clear that Darcy has scored some cool points with Chantay, from the way Chantay looks at her. Darcy is well aware of it and enjoys feeling like the cool kid for once.
7. Int. Cafeteria. Day.
Paige and JT are still working on the script, but are only halfway through. Paige gives up and lays her head on the table in dispare.
JT:
We have to cut the songs out. Getting the script ready will be hard enough.
Paige:
Why did we think, this would be easy? They probably had months to re-write the script for that movie! Doing it in a few weeks is impossible!
JT:
It´s too late to back out now.
Paige:
Does it feel good or funny to you?
JT:
Not really.
Paige:
I´m sorry, that I talked you into this. I thought, it would be a fun project for us to do together. We might as well be honest, it´s turned into a nightmare!
JT takes her hands and she looks up at him.
JT:
We need a night off. A night of fun.
Paige:
We don´t have the time, JT!
JT:
Then we´ll make the time for it. When you think of me, I want you to think of me as a guy, you have fun with.
He gets a smile out of her.
Paige:
Do you know, how I also think of you? As the best boyfriend, I could possibly have at this stage of my life.
JT:
You said, that the fun will go out of this relationship. I intend to prove you wrong.
Paige:
That wasn´t how I meant it, but I can´t wait to see you try.
They smile at each other.
8. Int. Garage. Evening.
Craig, Marco and Spinner are jamming away, sounding as rusty, as they are. Craig stops playing and the others stop too.
Craig:
We used to sound decent!
Marco:
We also had Jimmy in the band back then.
Spinner:
We´ll get better again! Check this out.
He does a drum solo, that starts off alright, but gets rather messed up at the end.
Craig:
Don´t quit your job at The Dot, Spinner!
Caitlin lets a slightly nervous looking Darcy in. The guys are happy to see her.
Darcy:
Hi, guys.
Marco:
I hope, you can make us sound good!
Caitlin:
Do your parents know, that you´ll be hanging out with these three?
Darcy:
I don´t think, they´re as bad as they look.
Caitlin:
Craig, we´re going to visit my parents. We can´t put the kids through this.
Craig:
We weren´t that bad!
Caitlin:
If you´re gonna continue with this, you should look into finding somewhere else to rehearse. At least until you become better, because that ...
She just shakes her head and leaves them.
Craig:
Which means, we can make all the noise, we want to! Is there any song, you want to start out with? I know lots of them.
Spinner:
Do you know "I Wanna Be Sedated"?
Marco:
Spinner, I know you want to play in a Ramones cover band, but ...
Darcy:
I think, I remember the lyrics to it, or most of them anyway.
Spinner smiles at her.
Spinner:
You like The Ramones?
Darcy:
I like a lot of old school punk. MC5, Blondie, Television, Bad Religion, NOFX ...
Spinner:
NOFX too? I don´t think any of the other girls I know, have heard of them!
Marco:
Congratulations, Spinner. You´ve met your musical soul mate.
Spinner:
I didn´t think a girl like you would like old school punk.
Darcy:
Just because I look like a good girl, doesn´t mean I am one, does it?
She smiles flirtingly back at him.
Spinner:
I guess not! 1, 2, 3, ,4 ...
The band starts rocking and Darcy grabs the microphone.
Darcy:
Twenty, twenty, twenty four hours ago ...
I wanna be sedated!
She´s definitely helping the band sound better, to Marco and Craig´s delight. She´s enjoying the attention, she´s getting from the three boys.
9. Ext. Amusement Park. Evening.
Paige is shaking her head, while JT looks excited.
Paige:
I´m not doing that with you!
JT:
There´s a first time for everything, isn´t there?
Paige:
Maybe when we´re older, but ...
JT:
Paige, there´s no time like the current! I want to do it and I´m doing with or without you. What´s it gonna be?
Paige:
Okay, I´ll do it! I hope, you´ll enjoy it, because I know, I won´t!
JT:
I guarantee, you won´t regret it!
Paige:
Let´s get this over with, so we can get on with the rest of the evening!
JT smiles widely and we see that they´re next to a huge and rather scary looking rollercoaster. We can hear people who are already on the ride screaming in the background.
JT:
I´ve been on it once a year, since I was ten. Trust me, it´s not as scary as it looks.
Paige:
I hope not, because I´m practically peeing my pants at the thought of getting up in that thing!
JT:
I´ll hold your hand through the whole ride. This is something, everyone should experience once in their lives.
Paige:
My hair is gonna be a complete mess afterwards. You´ll have to walk around with a girl, they´ll call "Haystack" behind our backs.
JT:
Paige, you could be bald and I´d still be crazy about you.
Paige:
Do you promise not to get mad, if I hurl on you?
JT:
Not for a moment. I´ll wipe it off with a smile.
Paige:
You are not like the average boyfriend, JT Yorke!
They kiss and get in line.
10. Int. Garage. Evening.
The band finish playing a song and look pleased with how it went.
Craig:
Not bad! Caitlin could actually allow us to keep playing in the garage!
Marco:
You have a good voice, Darcy.
Darcy:
Thanks, Marco.
Spinner:
This is the best workout I´ve had in weeks! I need a drink.
Craig:
There´s sodas in the fridge.
Spinner:
Where´s the fridge?
Craig:
Come with me.
They leave the other two, who go to sit on the couch.
Marco:
I feel like, I should warn you.
Darcy:
About what?
Marco:
We´re sitting right where Craig´s daughter was conceived!
Darcy:
I did not need to know that!
Marco:
It was a test. If you´re gonna be in a band with us, then you´ll have to deal with remarks like that. You´re still sitting, so that tells me a lot about you.
Darcy:
Sex is a natural thing, right?
Marco:
Are you a wild girl?
Darcy:
I you mean someone, who goes from one guy to another, then no. But I like to party as much as the next girl.
Marco:
Tell me about this band, you were in.
Darcy:
What´s to say? It was a band I was in and we played a lot of gigs.
Marco:
Were the others your age?
Darcy isn´t liking being questioned on it, but tries to shake it off.
Darcy:
Some of them.
Marco:
How many were you in the band?
Darcy:
Five, I guess.
Marco:
Five, you guess? How long ago was this?
He starts to look suspicious.
Darcy:
Not that long ago and yes, there were five of us.
Marco:
Which instruments did you have in it and what was your name?
Darcy:
Let´s see ...
Marco:
You are totally making this up!
Darcy sees that she´s been busted, just as the others come back in.
Marco:
Guys, I think that Darcy has some explaining to do.
Spinner:
Why?
Darcy:
Because I´ve been lying to impress you. I haven´t played in a band before, but I´ve always wanted to. I haven´t played any gigs and I´m not that much into old school punk. I only remember that song, because it was in an episode of "My So-Called Life". I used to watch it, because I had a crush on Jared Leto. I remembered the names of those bands from my cousin´s CD collection. If you´d asked me anything about them, I would have been busted.
They guys start laughing. It makes Darcy smile too.
Darcy:
I´m trying to have a character defining moment here, you guys!
Spinner:
What else haven´t you told us?
Darcy:
I´m not wild in any way. We moved here from a small town, where nothing ever happened. I haven´t been drunk or smoked weed or anything like that and I go to church with my parents and my sister every Sunday. That´s usually the closest I come to attending a party that week.
Marco:
We aren´t wild either, Darcy. I go to church with my parents too.
Craig:
I spent most of my evenings looking forward to coming home and playing with a four month old. What´s wild about that?
Spinner:
You don´t have to pretend to be someone, you´re not with us, Darcy.
Darcy looks pleased.
11. Ext. Amusement Park. Evening.
Paige and JT are taking a break from the fun with some popcorn.
JT:
I guaranteed you a fun night, didn´t I?
Paige:
You did. I´m sorry, I said that thing yesterday. Every day with you so far has been a new adventure. I can´t see that ending anytime soon.
JT:
I never really though past the "getting you" part, until you said those things. Now that you´re my girlfriend, I have to find new ways to impress you.
Paige:
You don´t have to impress me, JT! Sure, it´s nice to have you shower me with romance, but it´s not like I expect if of you.
JT:
I know, that you could be with better looking guys than me. That just means, I have to find other ways to keep you interested.
Paige:
I can´t imagine a day coming, where I won´t be interested in you. As for the looks, I think you´re cute.
JT:
I´m well aware, that I´m short and kind of funny looking. My voice sounds more like a chipmunk´s than a womanizer´s!
Paige:
I have this weird crooked smile and you don´t want to know what I look like, before I´ve had my morning shower! I´m far from perfect either. Looks are only one part of the equation. With you it´s the whole package, I can´t get enough of.
JT:
You won´t be dumping me in the near future?
Paige:
Right now, I honestly have no idea, what I´d do without you in my life
She takes his hand and kisses it.
12. Ext. Joey´s House. Evening.
The band are saying goodbye to Craig.
Craig:
See if you can´t come up with a new band name.
Darcy:
What was your old name?
Spinner:
Downtown Sasquatch.
Darcy:
Wow! That is a terrible name for a band!
Craig:
You do better, then.
Darcy:
What about simply "Three Guys and a Girl"? It worked for that show "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place".
The guys look at each other.
Marco:
I have no problem with it.
Spinner:
We can always change it later, if it isn´t working.
Craig:
I guess, we have a name!
Marco:
I´m heading home.
Spinner:
Are you coming, Darcy?
Darcy:
In a second, okay?
Marco:
We´ll wait for you down by the road.
Spinner and Marco leave them.
Darcy:
I had to thank you.
Craig:
You don´t have to.
Darcy:
Maybe not, but I want to. It hasn´t been easy being the new kid in town. These last weeks since I got to know you have been special.
Craig:
Thank yourself. You´re an easy girl to get along with.
Darcy smiles at him.
Darcy:
You always do that.
Craig:
Do what?
Darcy:
You give me these nice little compliments.
Craig:
I can stop it, if you want it.
Darcy:
No, they always make my day better. I´m just worried if it´s because you like me, like me.
She looks at him anxiously.
Craig:
Darcy, if it hadn´t been for Manny, who knows what could have happened, but ...
Darcy:
It´s okay. We´re friends, aren´t we?
Craig:
And band mates.
Darcy:
I guess, that would be another reason. I mean, look at all the bands that broke up, because one of the couples in the band broke up.
Craig:
It only really worked for Fleetwood Mac.
Darcy:
The band still broke up, didn´t they?
Craig:
More or less, except for the occasional "We´re running low on money again" reunion tour.
His joke makes her smile.
Darcy:
I´ll see you in school, Craig. Say hi to Manny from me.
Craig:
I will. Get home safely.
She leaves him and he shuts the door.
13. Int. Darcy´s Room. Evening.
Darcy is getting ready for bed, when Clare comes in, wiping her eyes.
Clare:
You woke me up.
Darcy:
I´m sorry.
Clare:
Do mom and dad know, that you were out past eleven on a school night?
Darcy:
They won´t unless you snitch on me!
Clare:
Your secret is safe with me. Did you kiss Craig?
Darcy:
I don´t think, it´s gonna happen. I found something better, though.
Clare:
What´s that?
Darcy:
Friends.
She smiles to herself and Clare looks pleased for her.
