WHAT IF? - SEASON 1 EPISODE 15 - YOU´VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMING PART 2

1. Int. Jay´s Apartment. Evening.
We open on something, I don´t think any Degrassi fan in their wildest imagination evert thought, they would see: Ellie and Jay dancing to the Outkast song "Hey Ya" and enjoying themselves together! Jay even busts out his worst dance moves just to amuse Ellie and it gets a giggle from her. In turn, she shows him her worst moves and they pretty much couldn´t be worse!
Jay:
We need a break. This is getting too silly!
Ellie:
That´s exactly why it´s fun! I never get to be the silly girl! I´m always the serious one, who wishes she could be more fun.
Jay:
I´ve enjoyed myself this past week with you. Even if I still don´t think, there´s anything to be afraid of.
Ellie:
Probably not, but she did give me a scary vibe, when I talked to her. Haven´t you seen "Fatal Attraction"?
Jay:
That was just a movie! I think this was an excuse to hang out, so we could get to know each other better.
Ellie smiles, but can´t hide that she might have had an ulterior motive.
Ellie:
I haven´t heard you complain.
Jay:
No one´s complaining here! After a day of guy talk at the store, it´s nice to talk to a sensible girl, who can talk about something besides girls and hockey.
Ellie:
We can talk about those things! How about them Cowboys?
Jay:
That´s a Football team, Ellie.
Ellie:
I heard it in a movie and thought it might apply. To be honest, I´d pretty lost when it comes to talking sports.
Jay:
I can talk to work work friends about that kind of stuff. I can talk to you about other things. Like what´s your biggest interest right now?
Ellie:
I´ve been reading a lot of Rene Descartes books lately. You probably don´t know, who that is.
Jay:
French philosopher, who famously uttered "I think, therefore I am".
Ellie looks very surprised.
Ellie:
I guess, I should learn not to judge a book by is cover!
Jay:
It comes from me watching Monty Python with Alex. The re-wrote it to "I drink, therefore I am". It was sort of my motto for a while, until I smartened up.
Ellie smiles, happy that she didn´t get him all wrong.
2. Ext. Apartment Building. Evening.
Jay hugs Ellie goodbye.
Jay:
Are you coming over tomorrow?
Ellie:
I really should catch up on my homework. Okay, but the day after tomorrow is dedicated to school stuff!
Jay:
The day after tomorrow is Saturday! You can´t work on a Saturday!
Ellie:
You are such a bad influence on me!
They smile at each other and make eye contact. A moment of electricity sparks between them, but they manage to pull themselves out of it.
Ellie:
I´d better hurry up, if I´m gonna catch my bus.
Jay:
You´re sure, you don´t want me to drive to home?
Ellie:
I´ve been mooching so many rides off you, that it feels like, I should start tipping you! Are you picking me up after school at the Dot?
Jay:
It´s a deal. Get home safely, okay? I couldn´t bare the thought, that anything should happen to you.
Ellie:
Goodnight, Jay.
She starts walking up the street and Jay heads back inside.
We cut to a little away from there, where Caroline (dressed in black, so as to not be seen), is watching them. She looks so angry, that she could literally kill someone!
OPENING CREDITS
3. Int. Classroom. Day.
Ellie is in class by her PC, but is looking a bit tired and is having trouble concentrating to Marco´s amusement. Snake is teaching the class.
Snake:
Can you guess, what to do next?
Paige raises her hand.
Snake;
Yes, Paige?
Paige:
Press control-L?
Snake:
Give the young lady her prize!
Paige looks pleased. Ellie gets a private mail and checks it.
From Marco:
Did someone keep you up last night? You´re looking like you could fall asleep at any moment.
Ellie writes a quick reply.
I was still so pumped with adrenaline, when I came home, that I couldn´t fall asleep. A cup of joe in the next break should do the trick.
Marco looks surprised, when he sees it and instantly writes a reply.
What exactly did you and him do last night?
She smiles to herself, as she writes her reply.
We danced the night away. So help me, but I´m falling head over heels in love with him and we haven´t even kissed yet! I wanted to kiss him so badly, when we hugged goodbye, that I felt like I could burst!
Marco reads her reply and looks shocked.
Marco:
WHAT?
All eyes are suddenly on Marco, including Snake.
Snake:
I had no idea, that anyone besides me finds this so interesting! Or were you busy chatting with Ellie about which party to go to this weekend?
Ellie:
We´re not really the partying type, Mr. Simpson.
Snake:
I find that hard to believe.
He walks down and looks at Marco´s monitor. Ellie looks like, she´d like to crawl into a hole and hide away in it.
Snake:
It sound like quite a guy, you´ve found there, Ellie. Is it anyone, we know?
Ellie:
I´d rather not disclose that, Sir.
Snake:
Love is a splendid thing and I wish you the best of luck with him. That doesn´t mean you and Marco don´t still need to pay attention in my class, unless you´re looking to fail it.
Marco:
It won´t happen again, Mr. Simpson.
Snake:
Back to what we were talking about ...
Ellie looks a little embarrassed. Marco looks happy for her.
4. Int. Music Room. Day.
Craig is jamming with Ashley and they´re playing The Police´s absolut classic "Every Breath You Take", with Craig on guitar and Ashley on the piano. Craig sings it wonderfully and they have Darcy, Emma, Terri and Manny there to be their audience.
Manny;
Is there any way that a guy can be sexier, than when he´s singing that song to you?
Darcy:
Not in your eyes obviously!
Manny:
Come on, it´s the ultimate love song!
Terri:
I´d hate to burst your bubble, but it´s actually from the point of view of a guy, who´s stalking a girl.
Emma:
It is? I never knew that.
Terri:
It becomes a lot darker, when you know what it´s really about!
Manny:
I´d rather go on pretending, that it´s a beautiful love song!
Darcy:
I´m with you, Manny. All that darkness just isn´t for me!
We cut back to Craig and Ashley, who sing harmony on the outro.
Ashley (singing):

Craig (singing):
I´ll be watching you.
We cut to Darcy´s face. She can´t help looking a little worried.
5. Int. Hallway. Day.
Darcy comes back from the "concert" and opens her locker. A note falls out and she picks it up. Chantay comes over to her.
Chantay:
Where were you? You missed out on some top class gossip!
Darcy:
Watching a totally hot guy sing love songs, while playing guitar!
Chantay:
That sounds a lot more exciting! Can I come next time?
Darcy:
I´ll ask.
Chantay:
Another note from Rick?
Darcy:
Probably. Let´s see, what he wrote this time.
She unfolds the paper and reads what´s on it, while Chantay sneaks a peek.
Chantay:
Wow! That boy is really into you!
Darcy:
Maybe a little too much. I met his former stalking victim today.
Chantay:
He has one of those and you still want to go to the dance with him?
Darcy:
He´s been open about it from the start and he explained, that he´s not that guy anymore. I don´t want to be someone, who´ll discount someone for something they did because of a mental disease, they were born with. It isn´t right that they should feel excluded, just because they weren´t born as lucky, as we were.
Chantay:
But you´re still worried, aren´t you?
Darcy:
He´s on medication, but what if he loses it and goes off his meds? Am I gonna be his number one target, then? I need to have a talk with him.
She looks like, she´d rather not have to.
6. Int. Cafeteria. Day.
Ellie is hanging out with Marco and Ashley.
Ellie:
I hope, that´s the most embarrassing thing to happen to me this year!
Marco:
There´s still a month left, where you can top it.
Ellie:
That one will be hard to top!
Ashley:
You´re actually falling for Jay?
Ellie:
You don´t have to tell the entire school!
Marco:
We need three reasons why, so we don´t think you´re losing it again.
Ellie:
He´s hot, for one!
Ashley:
What else?
Ellie:
He´s different from anyone else, I know. Things with Jay are always simple. I guess, I´ve always looked down on people for not being overly intelligent, but with him it´s kind of an advantage. Things are either good or bad, end of story. I wish, I could look at the world more like that.
Marco:
You still owe us one more.
Ellie:
The last one would be the way he makes me feel safe, when I´m with him. Like he´s never going to let anything bad happen to me.
Ashley:
We could all use a friend like that. Only you want to be more than friends, don´t you?
Ellie:
How do you, you know, get to that point? I can´t so what I did with you, Marco and me and Jay getting a day of pretending that we´re in "The Breakfast Club" won´t happen either. Can I just ask him to kiss me?
Marco:
You´re asking me? The only guy I´ve kissed is Dylan and that wouldn´t have happened, unless he had held my hand through the entire way to getting there.
Ashley:
You also can´t go back in time and get to know him in Grade 2, like I did with Jimmy. I´m afraid you´ll have to find your own scoring technique, little Grasshopper! Though with a guy like Jay, that simple "ask him technique", just might work.
Ellie considers it.
7. Int. Garage. Day.
Chester is looking over Jay´s work on a car and looks impressed.
Chester:
This isn´t the work of your average apprentice. Maybe you should be teaching the others how it´s done.
Jay:
Thanks, boss. I try my best.
Chester:
As fra as I´m concerned, you´re a God sent! That cute little red head thinks so too. Is she coming down today?
Jay:
No, I´m meeting her after work.
Chester:
Some guys have all the luck! The rest of us had to settle for the ones, no one else wanted. My prom date was Big Rhonda. Believe me, when I tell you that they called her that for a good reason!
Jay laughs.
Jay:
I suppose, I am lucky, that a girl like that will give me the time of day. We´re very different, though. Then again, that could be why it´s so exciting.
Chester:
Save those sweet thoughts for later. There´s a 91 LeSabre out front that needs it´s brakes fixed and it has your name on it.
Jay:
I´ll get right on it.
Chester goes to check up on his other mechanics. Jay smiles to himself, before going back to work.
8. Ext. Garage. Day.
Jay comes outside to find the car, he´s meant to fix, among the others, they have waiting. He looks through them and barely notices Caroline approaching him.
Caroline:
Jay? Can we talk?
Jay is startled and has to take a moment to compose himself.
Jay:
You just gave me my first grey hairs!
Caroline giggles, but it´s kind of in un-nerving way.
Caroline:
I didn´t mean to. This is the only way I could get in touch with you.
Jay:
Annie, I ...
Caroline:
You don´t need to explain. I can see how I probably went too far, when I sent you all those messages. I was lonely and in a very messed up place, so I felt like you might understand.
Jay:
It´s not that I don´t want what´s best for you. I do. Confessing that you love me and things like that, it´s stepping into a territory, I´d rather not step into.
Caroline:
But I do love you! I know that I´m young, but I know what love is. These feeling that I´m feeling, they´re real, Jay.
She starts to move in closer to him and it makes him uncomfortable.
Jay:
That´s close enough. To be honest, you should probably leave, before my boss sees.
Caroline:
Sees what? Two people in love. Ellie can´t give you the kind of unconditional love, I can.
He sticks out his arm and holds her at arms length. He looks at her very seriously.
Jay:
How did you know about me and Ellie?
Caroline:
So, there is something there?
Jay:
That´s none of your business! Look, you really need to go. This obsession you have with me is ... I´m not sure what it is, but it can´t be healthy. I´ve never been your boyfriend and I never intended to be. I was only being nice, because you looked like you could use a friend.
Caroline:
No, you weren´t. Maybe you didn´t know it, but I can feel that we have a special connection. This was meant to be and if she gets in the way of it, well, then I´ll make sure that she isn´t a problem anymore.
She tries to move in and kiss him, but she pushes her away.
Caroline:
Jay ...
Jay:
You really need to go, or I´ll call the cops. This has gone too far, as it is and now you´re talking, like you would hurt Ellie? Stay away from her and stay away from me! You need help!
Caroline:
The only thing you need is me. If you won´t see it, then I´ll have to make you see it.
Jay:
What do you mean by that?
Caroline:
You´ll find out soon.
Jay:
What´s that supposed to mean?
She doesn´t answer him and walks away from him. Chester comes out, just as he´s about to go after her.
Chester:
What´s the hold up? Chop, chop, Jay! Time is money!
Jay doesn´t like it, but has to ler her walk away, so he can get back to work.
9. Int. Foyer. Day.
Rick is hanging up posters for the school dance with Toby. Rick is holding them up, while Toby (on a small step ladder) is fixing them to the wall with tape. Darcy comes over to them.
Darcy:
I knew that you were passionate about things, but hanging up posters?
Rick immediately drops the poster, to Toby´s chagrin.
Toby:
We´ll never finish this way!
Rick:
Sorry, Tobes. I have more important things to attend to.
Toby:
I´m taking a bathroom break.
Toby leaves them.
Rick:
You´ve busted me. I got a ten dollar discount on our tickets for hanging these up.
Darcy:
I can pay for my half, if it´s a problem.
Rick:
No! You´re my date, so I can´t make you pay.
Darcy:
Rick, I don´t want you to get the wrong impression. We´re not actually dating yet. We have a date planned. There´s a difference.
Rick:
You wouldn´t have said yes, unless you wanted to go with me, did you?
Darcy:
The thing is that I don´t know, if I´m on the look out for a boyfriend yet. I´m still getting used to my new surroundings and I´m trying to make new friends, so maybe a boyfriend would be too much, too soon.
Rick:
Darcy, the old me would have taken that as a personal insult, but I get it. It wasn´t that long ago, that I was the new kid here.
Darcy:
It´s just that I know how intense you can be and with your history and all that ... I don´t want to think it, but it worries me.
Rick:
No one is more ashamed of how things went down with Terri, than I am. Thinking back, I don´t even recognize the guy, who did that. How can I convince you, that I´ve changed?
Darcy:
We could do a trial date, perhaps. I´m not working tonight.
Rick:
If you can settle for one, that can´t cost more than ten dollars.
Darcy:
A night at home doesn´t cost more than that. I´m not expecting anything fancy.
Rick:
My house at 6?
Darcy:
Sure. Have fun with your posters!
They smile at each other and she leaves him. Toby comes back from the bathroom.
10. Ext. Street. Day.
Ellie is heading up to The Dot and clearly has "Blister in the Sun" by Violent Femmes on the brain, but can´t remember the lyrics that well.
Ellie (singing to herself):
When I am a walking, something, something, dum, dum, dum, da, da
Cuz I´m something, something and I just might, stop to check you out
La, la, la, da, da, da, blister in the sun
She stop singing and whistles the last part.
Ellie (to herself):
I really should learn all the lyrics to it sometime!
She gets a phone call and gets her cell phone out. She puts it to her ear.
Ellie:
Caroline?
Caroline (voice over):
I´m sorry, Ellie. I didn´t know who else to call. It´s about Jay. I have to talk to you about him.
Ellie:
What is it?
Caroline (voice over):
He did things to me.
Ellie looks concerned.
Ellie:
What kind of things?
Caroline (voice over):
I can´t talk about it on the phone. Can we meet somewhere?
Ellie:
If he did something, then you should go to the police.
Caroline (voice over):
I can´t. I shouldn´t have told you anything. I´m sorry for bothering you.
Ellie:
Don´t hang up! Where do you want to meet?
Ellie looks desperate to help Caroline.
11. Ext. Park. Day.
We see that Caroline is playing with a folding knife, while she´s talking to Ellie. She throws it and it digs into the earth.
Caroline:
At the park, maybe? I can be at the fountain in ten minutes.
Ellie (voice over):
I´ll get there, as soon as I can. I just can´t believe that Jay would do something like that.
Caroline:
Neither could I, until he did it. I´ll wait for you.
She hangs up and picks up the knife again. She stares at it with a morbid fascination and stares at her own reflection in the shine of the blade.
Caroline:
Sorry, Ellie. It has to be done.
She throws it again, this time at a tree, that it digs into.
12. Int. The Dot. Day.
Jay is at the counter, talking to Amy and Sean. He looks at his new watch.
Sean:
Did you buy that with your first paycheck?
Jay:
Yeah, I figured it was time I got one, that could actually keep time and wasn´t just for show!
Amy:
Look at Jay, the big spender! Is Ellie enjoying the fruits of that too?
Jay:
We´re not a couple, if that´s what you think.
Amy:
Why not? Ellie is cool in her own weird and slightly uptight way and you´re well, you. The two of you would make a half bad couple.
Sean:
I´m fine with it, if that´s what you´re worried about. Me and Ellie are better off as friends, anyway.
Jay:
She was supposed to come down here after school. I don´t know what´s keeping her.
Sean:
Give her a call!
Jay gets his phone out.
Amy:
I´d give her a little more time, if I were you. Trust me, there´s nothing that can make me run away faster, than a guy who´s too pushy right from the beginning.
Sean:
It used to work on you.
Amy:
That was back when I was "That kind of girl". Ellie is the anti "That kind of girl".
Jay:
Seeing as I´ve messed it up with every other girl except for Alex, who, let´s face it, was extremely patient beyond the call of duty, I´ll take you advice and wait!
He puts his phone away. He can´t help looking a little worried, though.
13. Ext. Rick´s House. Evening.
Darcy comes up to Rick´s house and rings the doorbell. She´s dressed casually. Rick opens it and he´s wearing a tuxedo. It makes both of them smile.
Rick:
Believe it or not, this isn´t what I usually wear around the house.
Darcy:
We should have agreed on how to dress. I figured, that since we were just hanging out, casual would be the way to go.
Rick:
Come inside.
He leads her in.
14, Int. Dining Room. Evening.
Darcy is let in by Rick and his mom.
Rick´s Mom:
We´re so glad, you could come. Rick loves to talk about you, so it´s like I´m meeting a celebrity for the first time!
Darcy:
He doesn´t say anything bad about me, I hope.
Rick:
I would never do that.
Rick´s Mom:
A big part of Rick´s anger management classes were about learning to cleanse himself of negativity. Isn´t that right, Rick?
Rick looks embarrassed, which his mom doesn´t register. Darcy does though and she sympathizes with him.
Rick:
Yes, it was.
Rick´s Mom:
You kids take a seat and be back with something for you to drink! We´re having a pot roast, Darla.
Darcy:
Sounds great!
Rick´s mom leaves them. There´s an uncomfortable silence.
Rick:
m sorry about that, Darla.
Darcy smiles.
Darcy:
It´s okay. My mom has called my little sister´s new friend Alli everything from Abby to Maddy. It could just be a mom thing to do.
Rick:
Look, I know that there´s a lot more reasons not to date me, than there are to date me. My back will always be against the wall, when it comes to my past. I see how some of the girls move over to the other side of the hallway, when they see me coming, like I´m looking to kidnap all of them or something. That´s the prize I´m paying, for what I did.
Darcy:
I´d like to be the one, who gives you a fresh start. The bible tells us to forgive and forget and I don´t want to be someone, who doesn´t practice, what she preaches.
Rick:
You´re the first girl since Terri to give me a chance. I want you to know, that I´m grateful, you did.
Darcy:
One step at a time, okay, Rick? I don´t think any of us should rush into something, we might not be ready for,
Rick:
I can live with that.
He nods and they smile at each other.
15. Int. The Dot. Evening.
Jay is still at The Dot and is now very worried about Ellie. So is Spinner, who´s on the phone with Marco. Sean and Amy are also still there.
Spinner:
No, we haven´t heard from her either. It´s as if she´s disappeared off the face of the earth. Give us a call, if you hear anything.
He hangs the phone up.
Spinner:
Paige´s brother is taking him and Paige out, so they can look for her.
Amy:
Who would hurt Ellie?
Sean:
She feels guilty, when she kills a fly. Literally!
Jay:
We have to do something.
Jay´s phone rings and he looks relieved, when he looks at the display.
Spinner:
It´s her?
Jay nods and puts it to his ear.
Jay:
Ellie? Are you okay?
Caroline (voice over):
So, you´ll pick up for her, but you won´t, when I call?
Jay:
Caroline?
Caroline (voice over):
If you want to see Ellie alive again, then listen carefully to my instructions.
Jay:
Caroline, please don´t hurt her!
Caroline (voice over):
Whether I hurt her or not, all depends on you. You WILL BE MINE, JAY! If I have to do this to make you see that we belong together, then that´s what I´ll do!
Jay:
What are the instructions?
He listens carefully.
