WHAT IF? - EPISODE 16 - YOU´VE GOT ANOTHER THING COMING PART 3

Author´s Note: Just a quick shout out to all of you, who are reading. This is already quickly turning into the most succesful of my Degrassi series, so a big thank you to all of you who are reading it. Here´s the final part of this triple episode and I´m sure that you´re eager to find out what will happen to Ellie and the rest of them. Have an awesome weekend and I hope you´ll enjoy the episode.
1. Int. The Dot. Evening.
We´re almost back, where we left off. Jay is on his way out.
Jay:
It has to be just me. The girl is psycho, I have no idea, what she´ll do, if I don´t follow her orders.
Sean:
Would you cool it, for just a second? We have no idea, what she has planned!
Spinner:
At least let Sean go with you. You could be walking into a den of wolves.
Amy:
I say that we should call the cops. Let them handle the psycho bitch!
Jay:
They could shoot her, if things go wrong. This is just as much my fault for leading her on.
Sean:
It´s not your fault! What matters is making sure, that Ellie is safe. I have a plan, if you´ll listen to it.
Jay:
Tell me on the way.
They hurry out of there. Spinner puts his arms around Amy and kisses her hair. They both look worried.
2. Int. Car. Evening.
Jay is driving, with Sean in the passenger seat.
Sean:
Where are we heading to?
Jay:
The place, where we met her.
Sean:
Makes sense, now that the cops have scared everyone out into other parts of the city. Do you think, she would do something to Ellie?
Jay:
That girl is seriously sick in the head! There´s no telling, what she´s capable of. I never should have talked to her.
Sean:
You had no way of knowing, Jay.
Jay:
She might as well have been any of the dozens of girls I slept with and promised the world to.
Sean eyes him suspiciously.
Sean:
Dozens?
Jay:
The half a dozen girls, I´ve slept with. My dad tried to teach me, that this is what you get for stomping on their hearts, but would I listen?
Sean:
You never did anything with her besides talk, did you?
Jay:
No, nothing.
Sean:
Then it can´t be your fault. Ellie won´t think it is either, if I know her right.
They both look determined to save her.
3. Int. Trailer. Evening.
Caroline has made the trailer up to be romantic with candles and things, but in a sick and demented kind of way. Ellie is sitting on the floor, duct taped on her hands and feet and with tape covering her mouth. Caroline comes back in and she´s still holding the knife.
Caroline:
What the hell is keeping him?
Ellie struggles to get free and tries to say something, so Caroline tears the tape off of her mouth.
Ellie:
Caroline, you can still stop this! It´s not too late!
Caroline:
You´re right. It´s not too late for me!
She puts the tape back over Ellie´s mouth.
Caroline:
You´d better hope, that he likes you as much, as you think he does. Otherwise ...
She lets the knife run on the blunt side down Ellie´s cheek. Ellie cries in her panic.
Caroline:
You and me will be in for a long night!
She smiles at Ellie in a sick and twisted way. Ellie´s eyes are fixed on the knife.
OPENING CREDITS
4. Int. Dining Room. Evening.
Darcy is having dinner with Rick and his mom.
Darcy:
It tastes great, Mrs. Murray.
Rick´s Mom:
It´s miss Murray, I´m afraid. Rick´s father ... well, that´s a long story, I won´t bother you with. I can get you more potatoes, if you want?
Darcy:
It´s okay.
Rick´s Mom:
Don´t be silly! You and Rick are both growing and to do that you need things to grow on! I´ll be right back.
She grabs the potato bowl and leaves them.
Darcy:
Sorry, Rick, but I can´t eat anymore! I´ve already eaten twice of what I would usually eat for dinner.
Rick:
You don´t have to. That was her excuse to run off and cry. She still can´t ...
Rick himself has trouble finishing the sentence.
Rick:
She still can´t deal with my dad´s death. That was also when things started to go really wrong in my head, so I probably can´t either.
Darcy:
How long ago was it?
Rick:
Three years ago. He was killed in a head on collision with a semi. I´m sure, you don´t want to hear about it.
Darcy:
I would. I came here to find out for myself, who the real Rick Murray is.
Rick:
He´s perhaps a little nerdy, but he´s not ashamed of it. You know what they say, we´re the ones, who´ll end up with all the money some day.
Darcy smiles at him. He looks into her eyes.
Rick:
I´m also a normal 16 year old. who wants the same things that other 16 year old´s do. To have friends, a girlfriend and a feeling like you´re somewhere, where you belong and you´re liked. There´s just this tiny little chromosome error, I was born with, that´s given me an in-balance in my brain, that I can´t control without medication. It made me do things, I never imagined that I could be capable of. You have my word Darcy, that I would never dream of doing anything to hurt you. All I want the chance to be like everyone else.
Darcy:
Well, that´s a shame. Cuz I like that you´re not like the rest of them.
Her words make Rick smile.
5. Ext. The Ravine. Evening.
Jay comes walking down towards the trailers, he´s looking very nervous. The Ravine, which before would have been bustling with activity on a Friday, is completely deserted.
Jay (to himself):
Remember, when your biggest problem was if Alex found out, that you had been cheating on her? Those were the days!
He reaches the trailer and knocks on the door, before walking in.
6. Int. Trailer. Evening.
Jay comes in and is shocked to see Ellie taped up. Caroline smiles at him.
Caroline:
So glad, you could make it!
Jay:
Let her go. She has nothing to do with this.
Caroline:
Wrong! She has everything to do with this! She´s the only thing standing between us and eternal bliss.
Jay:
You´re crazy!
Caroline:
Only crazy about you. It´s her own fault for moving in on you.
Jay:
Let´s go for a walk. You can still bring the knife, is you want to.
Caroline:
Ah, ah! I call the shots here!
Jay:
Caroline ...
He looks her in the eyes.
Jay:
I´ll do whatever you want. As long as Ellie doesn´t get hurt. This is about you and me, not her.
Caroline is clearly torn, but agrees to it.
Caroline:
She´s still not going anywhere, until you´ve convinced me, that you´re not lying.
Jay:
I´m not. I swear on my mother´s grave.
Caroline approaches him, holding the knife out in front of herself. They leave the trailer.
7. Ext. The Ravine. Evening.
We see from the point of view of someone hiding behind the trailer, that Jay and Caroline walk away from it, with Caroline walking behind Jay. It´s Sean, who sneaks into the trailer, when he´s sure, they can´t see him do it.
8. Int. Trailer. Evening.
Sean comes in and immediately rushes to Ellie´s aid. He starts by gently removing the tape from her mouth.
Sean:
Did she hurt you?
Ellie:
No, but that girl is seriously demented! We have to help Jay.
Sean:
Jay can take care of himself. The only thing he cares about is you getting to safety, so I´m not letting him down, whether you like it or not.
Ellie smiles, as he tears the tape off her feet and hands.
Ellie:
He said that?
Sean:
You´ll have plenty of time for fuzzy romantic moments, when you´re safe and sound.
Ellie:
Am I completely crazy to like him?
Sean:
He did just risk him own life, to save yours. That has to count for something, doesn´t it?
Ellie:
I´ll need a hand to get up. My legs are asleep.
Sean:
I´ll do you one better.
He picks her up and carries her out.
9. Int. Rick´s Room. Evening.
Darcy is lying on Rick´s bed, when he brings in a bowl of popcorn.
Darcy:
If it had been any other kind of food, I would have said no.
Rick:
There´s always room for popcorn and jelly!
Darcy:
If I keep eating like this, you´ll be taking a tub of jelly to the dance!
Rick lies down next to her and they both dig in.
Rick:
I´ve told you all of my deep, dark secrets. Don´t you have any?
Darcy:
My life hasn´t been all that exciting so far. I´m just a small town girl, who´s trying to fit in at a school, that´s ten times bigger than the one, she came from.
Rick:
What was life like, where you came from?
Darcy:
The two best words to describe it would be quiet and protected. My sister is still adjusting more than I am. You hear all those stories about the crime and all that stuff, when you grow up in a small town and it makes it seem so scary. I´m glad to say, that it so far isn´t.
Rick:
It can be, but it´s all about who you know. Get the right friends and you´ll be alright.
Darcy:
I feel safe in here with you.
They make eye contact and move in closer. She pulls away at the last second, though.
Darcy:
I´m sorry, Rick. I don´t know if I´m ready. I´ve never had an actual boyfriend before.
Rick:
There´s a first time for everything, isn´t there?
Darcy:
I guess so.
She gives in and kisses him. The popcorn bowl gets knocked over and popcorn goes everywhere, but they don´t care.
10. Ext. The Ravine. Evening.
Jay and Caroline have stopped. She´s still pointing the knife at him.
Jay:
You´ll have to put that away, if we´re going to kiss.
Caroline:
I knew, that I could make you see reason.
Jay:
First lower the knife.
She does, but is still holding on to it. He moves in close and kisses her. She´s so taken by the moment, that she doesn´t realize, that he´s grabbed her wrist as tight as he can. It´s only too late that she finds out what´s going on and stops kissing him.
Caroline:
You´re hurting me!
Jay:
Let go of the knife.
Caroline:
You bastard! I trusted you!
Jay:
You need help.
She kicks him away and he topples over. She looks at him with crazy eyes.
Caroline:
I´ll kill Ellie for this!
She runs towards the trailers. He gets up and runs after her.
11. Int. Trailer. Evening.
Caroline comes into the trailer and screams in an insane rage. She kicks the candles over and it sets fire to a mattress in there. It quickly starts to spread and she runs out again.
12. Ext. Ravine. Evening.
Caroline comes out from the trailer, as Jay cautiously approaches her.
Caroline:
WHERE IS SHE?
Jay:
She´s safe. Sean helped me. You know, the guy who really saved you. It wasn´t me, it was him.
Caroline:
NO! I REMEMBER THAT YOU CARRIED ME OUT!
Jay:
I did, but it was Sean that took him down. I´m not worthy of your affection. I´m a screw up, who couldn´t hack it in High School and I allowed negativity to rule my life once, just like you´re doing. It cost me close to everything. The last thing I am is a hero.
Caroline:
I don´t have anyone. You were the one person in my life, I didn´t think would betray me.
Jay:
I´m gonna count to five and then I´m taking the knife from you. It´s for your own good.
He slowly moves in closer and she doesn´t notice Sean sneaking up behind her simultaneously.
Jay:
One, two, three ...
Caroline:
NO!
She jumps him in a rage and even though she´s smaller than him, him not being prepared is enough for her to get the better of him. She furiously tries to stab him in the face, but he manages to move his head just in time.
Jay::
SEAN!
Sean:
Party´s over, Caroline.
He grabs her from behind, but her fury has given her extra strength and he can´t hold her, so she wiggles free. She tries to lunge at him with the knife and all he can do to protect himself is put his hands up. It´s Jay, who manages to grab her hand and hold tightly enough onto it, that Sean doesn´t get a knife to the face. The blade stops only about an inch or so from one of his eyes. Jay slowly pulls it away and takes the knife from her hand with his other hand and throws it away. Ellie comes running down to them, having watched it all from afar. She helps a still very shaken Sean to get up.
Jay:
It´s over, Caroline.
Caroline:
LET GO OF ME!
Ellie:
Not this time!
Peaceful and sweet little Ellie shows a brand new side to herself, when she almost knocks Caroline out with one punch and Caroline falls to the ground, semi unconscious. The other two look at her in awe, as Ellie is holding her hand.
Ellie:
I think, I broke my thumb!
Jay:
Let me see.
Jay checks out her hand.
Sean:
Did it at least feel good?
Ellie:
Oh, hell yeah! That bitch deserved it!
Jay:
It´s not broken. How does this feel?
He wiggles her thumb a little and it clearly hurts a little.
Ellie:
It hurts.
Jay kisses her thumb gently. Sean rolls his eyes at them.
Jay:
How about now?
Ellie:
That helped a little.
Sean:
You´re really gonna do that old Indiana Jones bit, when we have a psycho on our hands?
Ellie:
Look after her for a second, will you?
Jay and Ellie kiss passionately, as Sean helps Caroline up. She sees them kissing, which doesn´t help her one bit.
Caroline:
That´s the icing on the cake!
Sean:
I´m usually the nice guy, when it comes to girls. You however, tried to stab me in the eye!
He drags her away, as Jay and Ellie keep kissing.
13. Ext. Rick´s House. Evening.
Rick is saying goodnight to Darcy.
Darcy:
That wasn´t how I planned this night to go!
Rick:
Do you regret us kissing?
Darcy:
No, because it felt right. You´re not a half bad kisser.
Rick:
Neither are you, for a small town girl.
Darcy:
I´m not a girl, who will kiss a guy, I don´t have further plans with.
Rick looks pleased.
Rick:
What are those plans?
Darcy:
For one thing, there´s the prom. After that, we have a long summer to spend together, if you´re not too busy. My grand plan is to be spend the summer here working.
Rick:
I won´t be too busy for you.
Darcy sees, that Rick´s mom is watching them through the window.
Darcy:
I´d kiss you goodnight, but we have an audience. Can you settle for a hug?
Rick nods and they hug. She blows him a kiss, as she walks away from him.
14. Int. The Dot. Evening.
It´s the day after and there´s a closed "Ellie Is Safe" party going on at The Dot, with most of her friends gathered. Everyone is of course wanting to hear the story from her.
Paige:
On a scale of one to ten, how scared were you?
Ellie:
Around 988.745!
Ashley:
If you´re gonna be a war reporter someday ...
Ellie:
Those plans are scrapped for posterity! There´s enough danger here, without me having to seek it out.
Terri:
There´s dog shows. Someone needs to cover them.
Ellie:
That´s more up my alley! I´ll take a poodle humping my leg over a bomb falling on my head, any day of the week!
Marco:
I think, that I speak for all of us, when I say "Thank God"! Don´t you ever scare us like that again!
Ellie:
I don´t plan to! That was enough excitement for one lifetime! I´m spending the next many weekends doing absolutely nothing under the covers!
Hazel:
Whose covers would that be?
Ellie gets shy and blushes a little. The others look happy for her. We cut over to Jay, who´s talking to Sean, Amy and Spinner.
Amy:
How scared were you guys on the ten scale?
Sean:
I refuse to answer that on the grounds, that the scale would have to go to infinity!
Jay:
I was confident all the time.
Sean:
No, you weren´t!
Jay:
That´s how I choose to remember it.
Spinner:
Any word on what´s happened to Caroline?
Amy:
Please tell me, that she´s drugged up in a looney bin somewhere!
Jay:
That´s pretty accurate, from what they´ve told me.
Sean:
At least that nightmare is over.
Jay:
Are you kidding? I still have the worst part to go!
He looks concerned.
15. Ext. Degrassi. Day.
Students, teachers, Jay´s co-workers, reporters and other on-lookers are gathered outside of the school. Jay is with Ellie and looks nervous.
Jay:
Can we bring back the crazy girl with the knife? She was less scary than this!
Ellie:
No one is expecting an "every man is created equal" or "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" kind of speech. Speak from the heart and you´ll do fine.
Jay:
Look, Ellie, I´m not afraid of many things, but public speaking is the one thing, that scares the hell out of me! In Grade 3, I had to do a monologue in a school play and I couldn´t remember any of it, so I stood there and looked like an idiot, until I ran off the stage in shame.
Ellie smiles at him.
Ellie:
We´re so much more alike, than I thought, we were!
Jay:
Is that a good thing?
Ellie:
It´s a wonderful thing. Calm down and prepare to be praised. If anyone deserves it, it´s you.
He tries to look brave for her.
We cut down to Sean, who´s with Spinner, Amy and Alex. Sean and Spinner are amused by how nervous Jay looks.
Sean:
He looks like, he´s ready to run for the hills!
Spinner:
Poor guy!
Sean:
I got away with nearly getting stabbed in the eye. I´ll take that over being up there!
Alex:
You can´t tell me, there isn´t a small part of you, that wants recognition. You should be getting a medal too.
Sean:
I prefer being down here with the common folk.
Amy:
Spoken like a true hero!
Sean can´t help looking a little proud.
We cut over to Darcy, who´s with Rick, Toby, Manny, Liberty, JT, Paige, Craig and Emma.
Emma:
Jay Hogart, a hero! I can´t believe my own eyes!
Toby:
I always had him pegged for a coward, who was all talk.
Liberty:
To think, I spent my Saturday at home watching Seinfeld re-runs! He was out there saving lives.
JT:
Just so we´re clear, watching Seinfeld re-runs is never a waste of time! I´ll be the first to admit, that I´m a huge Kramer fan! The guy is hilarious!
Paige:
You are such a dork! I have no idea, why I put up with it!
JT:
I think, I know why.
He gives her a kiss that´s so good, that it literally took her breath away.
Paige:
Oh, yeah! That´s why!
Manny looks down at Darcy and Rick´s hands.
Manny:
Are you two just at the holding hands stage or ...
Darcy:
If you don´t mind, we´d like to keep that to ourselves. There´s no need to take any chances, considering how great things are going.
Rick:
What she said!
They look happy together. The others look happy on their behalf.
We cut to the podium, where Raditch is ready to speak.
Raditch:
Today is a day, that fills all of us with pride. Jay Hogart has not just once, but now twice saved lives in this city, both times without hesitation putting his own life and well being aside to protect a fellow member of this community. He is the perfect example of an everyday hero. We are therefore gathered here today to award him the Cross of Valour, the highest order for civic bravery in the state of Ontario. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you deputy mayor Miles Hollingworth the second.
Miles Senior, who is of course looking a lot younger than he did in later seasons, steps up to the microphone.
Miles Senior:
It is my honor to bestow upon you this order onto you, mister Hogart. I think everyone here can agree, that you deserve it.
He hangs the medal around Jay´s neck. Jay shakes his hand.
Miles Senior:
You are the first to receive this award since 1998. What do you have to say to everyone?
Jay looks very nervous, as he steps up to the microphone.
Jay:
I ehm ... I ... Oh, no!
He turns to Ellie and is close to panicking.
Jay:
I can´t do this! Can´t you say something on my behalf?
Ellie just gives him a big kiss. The crowd cheers loudly.
Ellie:
You can do this, because I believe that you can. You´re not alone in life anymore, Jay. You have me now,
Jay smiles and gets his confidence back. He steps up to the microphone.
Jay:
I´ve always hated long speeches, so I´ll make it as brief as I can. If you want to know why I did it, then the answer is simple. I did it for love.
Ellie looks simultaneously proud of him and very smitten with him.
