WHAT IF? - SEASON 2 EPISODE 4 - GIRLS AND BOYS
Disclaimer: I don´t own Degrassi or the characters from it.
1. Int. Hallway. Day.
Danny is getting advice from Derek. They´re looking at Chantay, who´s getting things out of her locker.
Danny:
My 6th sense is telling me, that she´ll turn me down. This is starting to feel like a bad idea.
Derek:
She´s just a girl, we go to school with. If she turns you down, then you move on to the next one.
Danny:
Wish me luck.
Derek:
You won´t need it. She´ll say yes.
Danny works up his courage and walks over to her.
Danny:
Hi, Chantay.
Chantay smiles at him.
Chantay:
Hi, Danny. Are you ready for another exciting day at Degrassi?
Danny:
Yeah! Or were you being ironic?
Chantay:
It could be worse, I suppose.
Danny:
I was thinking that maybe we could ...
He sees that she´s distracted by Jimmy, who walks past them.
Chantay:
Hi, Jimmy!
She watches him walk past them without noticing her. It makes Danny lose his nerve, though.
Chantay:
You were saying?
Danny:
I was wondering, if you want to go to the game tonight, but ...
Chantay:
Sure!
Danny looks pleased.
Danny:
I can pick you up at your house.
Chantay:
I´m meeting up with Darcy and Peter at The Dot, before the game. You can meet us there.
Danny tries to hide his disappointment.
Danny:
Of course, that´s what I meant. That we should go as a group.
Chantay:
You can bring Derek, if you want.
Danny:
Cool. I´ll see you later.
He walks back to Derek, looking a little defeated.
Derek:
So?
Danny shakes his head.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Danny´s Room. Day.
Danny is lifting weights, trying to build up his physique. Liberty is egging him on.
Liberty:
Five more. You can do it.
He does it and puts the weight down, before grabbing a water bottle and taking a large sip. Liberty writes his progress on a chart.
Liberty:
I gotta admit, that I didn´t think you would follow through.
Danny:
I won´t make any team, if I don´t.
Liberty:
If you think that I buy for a second, that this isn´t girl related, then you must think, I was born yesterday. It´s that Chantay girl, isn´t it?
Danny:
It could be.
Liberty:
I´ve seen the way you look at her. There´s no shame in having a crush, little bro,
Danny:
I doubt, she thinks of me that way. I tried to ask her our today.
Liberty:
Did she turn you down?
Danny:
She didn´t even get, that I was asking her out. It looks like she has a crush on Jimmy.
Liberty:
As in the Senior. who´s dating Hazel? Good luck with that, Chantay!
Danny:
I don´t understand, what I´m doing wrong. I´m not ugly or dislikable, am I?
Liberty smiles at him with sympathy.
Liberty:
You´re neither, Danny. She wants him, because he´s a prize. Someone who would make her instantly popular, if she dated him.
Danny:
I´ll take your word for it. You know a heck of a lot more about girls, than I do! I know guys and if I was Jimmy, then I couldn´t say no, if she came on to me.
Liberty:
It´s not like I´m friends with them, but from what everyone says, they´re rock solid. Plus, they´ve been together for what, two years now? They´re not likely to break up out of nowhere.
Danny:
Thanks for the pep talk, but if I don´t take a shower before the game, then I can wave any chance of getting some sweet smoochies from Chantay goodbye.
Liberty:
Keep it up and you´ll get her eventually ... says the girl, who chased after JT for 3 years and still lost him to another girl. Maybe you shouldn´t take my advice!
The siblings smile at each other and Danny leaves to take a shower, as Liberty writes down the last of his data.
3. Int. Locker Room. Day.
Jimmy is with Hazel, who´s in her Spirit Squad uniform. There´s no one else in there.
Hazel:
Usually, I would have complained about having to make out in a stinky locker room, but these are special circumstances.
Jimmy:
Hazel, we need to talk.
Hazel:
We can do that any time! I finally have you alone.
She tries to kiss him, but he holds her away.
Jimmy:
I´m breaking up with you.
Hazel looks shocked.
Hazel:
You can´t be serious! Is this because I got high at your party?
Jimmy:
It´s part of it. I can´t have someone in my life, who´ll bring drugs into it.
Hazel:
It was one time!
Jimmy:
But you loved it and that´s what scares me! Drugs and scandals can ruin careers as fast as an injury can. Mix them up at this stage and I can kiss my chance goodbye.
Hazel:
What do you expect from me? I can´t turn back time!
Jimmy:
It´s more than that. I don´t see a future with you anymore.
Hazel starts to cry.
Hazel:
That´s it? I don´t get say in it?
Jimmy:
We should have stayed broken up, after the last time. If that hurts to hear, then I´m sorry, but it´s better to do this now.
Hazel storms out of the room. Jimmy looks relieved, that he got it out.
4. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.
Jimmy walks on the court, where his team mates are warming up. Hazel follows soon after and walks over to Paige (who has rejoined the squad) and the other girls, who are doing their own warm-up´s, led by Paige. Paige sees, that Hazel has been crying and goes to tend to her.
Paige:
Mia, can you take over?
Mia Jones, a gorgeous but very petite Sophomore takes over leading the warm up´s.
Mia:
Do what I do.
Paige and Hazel walk away from the others.
Paige:
Are you alright?
Hazel:
Jimmy broke up with me.
Paige:
Come here, Hon.
Paige gives her a much needed hug.
Paige:
Did he say why?
Hazel:
Only that he can´t see a future with me anymore. How´s that for a slap in the face?
Paige:
I know it might feel that way, but you´re not the first girl to go through a break up and you won´t be the last. This is what you have friends for. It´ll suck for a while and before you know it, you´ll be ready to move on. Like poof!
She smiles at Hazel, who still looks depressed.
Paige:
We can get out of here and spend the entire evening eating ice cream and watching Ryan Gosling movies, if you want.
Hazel:
Someone has to lead the squad and Mia has only been here a month. Can you do it in my place? I can esaily imagine all those people staring at me, when I spontaneously bust out in tears.
Paige:
I got this. Do you want me to come over after the game?
Hazel:
That´s okay. I´ll probably go to bed early and cry myself to sleep.
Paige:
I´m not interested in taking your title. You´ll still be head of the squad for the next game.
Hazel forces a small smile for her and walks away. Paige walks back to the girls.
Paige:
Thanks, Mia. I can take it from here. Hazel will be MIA tonight, thanks to a private issue. Which means that I am back in charge!
Paige smiles and can´t hide, that she´s enjoying it.
5. Int. The Dot. Evening.
Danny is sitting at a table with Darcy, Peter and Chantay.
Danny:
I say that we win by ten.
Peter:
Do you want to put some money on that?
Darcy:
Peter ...
Peter:
Okay, I won´t bet.
Chantay finds it amusing.
Chantay:
What was that about?
Darcy:
Peter is trying to rid himself of his sins, so he will be worthy to date me.
Chantay makes wide eyes and it clearly speaks to her romance loving heart.
Chantay:
Did I hear that correctly? You´d do that for her?
Peter:
When you have as many as I have, then it isn´t the worst idea!
Chantay:
Would you do that for a girl, Danny?
Danny:
It´s a little much for a date, wouldn´t you say?
Chantay:
I think, it´s incredibly romantic. I hope, I´ll find a guy someday, who would do all that to impress me.
Danny sees that he said the wrong thing and tries to save it. Hazel comes in at the same time.
Danny:
I didn´t say that romance isn´t important, it´s just that ...
Darcy:
Sorry, Danny. Isn´t that the head of the Spirit Squad?
Chantay:
It is. Shouldn´t she be getting ready to cheer?
Danny:
Which must take a ton of warm up, right? There´s nothing more dangerous than spelling out letters with your arms!
Chantay and Darcy look at him with disgust.
Darcy:
That is so sexist!
Chantay:
How can you demean what they do like that? They work hard to entertain you the best, they can. The least you can do is respect them for it!
Darcy:
Cheerleading has come a long way in the past 20 years, I´ll have you know!
Chantay:
Is it because you don´t think that what girls do, means as much as what boys do?
Danny:
Not at all! I didn´t know you felt that way.
Darcy:
You´re talking to the first and second alternate.
Peter had to stop himself from smiling at how badly Danny is doing with Chantay. They can´t help overhearing Hazel saying goodbye to Spinner. She´s got a cup of coffee to go.
Hazel:
Have fun at the game.
Spinner:
I´ll make sure to cheer enough for the both of us! Unless you want me to boo Jimmy?
Hazel:
Wouldn´t you get beat up, if you did that?
Spinner:
Probably.
Hazel:
Go ahead and cheer him on, like you always do. It isn´t your fault, that we couldn´t make it work.
Hazel leaves and we cut to Chantay, to whom this is very interesting information.
6. Montage.
We get a montage from the basketball game, where Jimmy is dominating the game with assists, rebounds and baskets a plenty. On the sidelines, we see Paige enjoying being back in charge of the squad and also being very impressed with Mia, who´s clearly a step above the rest of the girls.
In the stands however, things keep going from bad to worse for Danny, who manages to spill his popcorn all over Chantay, when he becomes too excited by the game. When he stands up and tries to apologize, he also spills his soda on her, making her mad at him. He tries to apologize, but she´s off to clean herself off, before he gets the chance to. He sits down and sulks. Chantay might be blind to what´s going on, but Darcy isn´t and she feels sorry for him.
7. Int. Foyer. Evening.
The crowd is being led out and judging by the happy faces, it looks like Degrassi has won. Darcy, Peter, Danny and Chantay come out with them.
Darcy:
Aren´t you glad, I stopped you from making that bet?
Peter:
We can get a milkshake with the money, I saved.
Darcy:
You said the magic word. Are you guys coming?
Chantay:
I have to get this in a washing machine ASAP.
Danny:
Again, I´m very sorry.
Chantay:
Just remind me not to sit next to you again! I´m gonna try giving it a quick rinse, before I go home. Maybe it can be saved. See ya.
She leaves them and heads for the girls room. Danny looks frustrated.
Peter:
You look like you could use a shake.
Danny:
You can say that again!
They leave together.
8. Int. Girl´s Room. Evening.
Chantay is frantically trying to rinse her shirt, but isn´t too happy with the result.
Chantay (to herself):
Danny, you dumbass! A brand new shirt too!
She looks annoyed and wrings the water out of it, before putting it back on. She looks herself in the mirror and can only laugh to herself at how un-cool she looks.
Chantay (to herself):
Who said that being a High Schooler would be pretty and graceful all the time?
She puts her jacket on and leaves.
9. Ext. Degrassi. Evening.
Chantay is standing at the curb and is trying to call someone.
Chantay:
Come on, mom! Don´t tell me, you´ve gone to bed already!
She waits impatiently for a few moments.
Chantay:
Mom, it´s me. Call me as soon as you get this. Bye.
She puts her phone away and considers her options.
Chantay:
You could get a cab, but that would cost you two weeks allowance. There´s the bus, where you´ll get home at midnight if you´re lucky and still alive!
She doesn´t even notice Jimmy coming up behind her.
Jimmy:
Don´t tell anyone, but I have conversations with myself too.
She almost can´t believe her luck, as she turns around to face him.
Chantay:
It´s not something, I do all the time. It´s just that I´m kind of stranded here, so I´m considering my options.
Jimmy:
Where do you live?
Chantay:
Hart Street.
Jimmy:
I can swing by that way. I promise, I won´t bite.
Chantay:
That would be a huge help. I´m Chantay.
Jimmy:
I´m Jimmy, but since you came from the game, I guess, you already knew that. What happened to your shirt?
Chantay:
I can tell you on the ride.
Jimmy:
It´s this way.
They walk off towards his parent´s car.
10. Int. Car. Evening.
Jimmy is driving. Chantay is clearly impressed with the car.
Chantay:
Is this yours?
Jimmy:
I wish! It´s my dad´s. Are you old enough to drive?
Chantay:
Not for another year.
Jimmy:
Which would make you a Sophomore. Am I right?
Chantay:
Just above those at the absolute bottom, that´s where you find me! You could describe me as the girl, who wishes she had as interesting life.
Jimmy:
Like a Kardashian or something?
Chantay:
I would mind getting a cut of their money, if that´s what you´re asking!
Jimmy:
Me neither.
They smile at each other.
Chantay:
What do you like to do?
Jimmy:
I don´t get to do a whole lot these days. I´m grounded after the cops had to shut down a party, I held. I get to drive from home to school and that´s it.
Chantay:
Was it at least a fun party?
Jimmy:
Oh, yeah. It was! Which house number?
Chantay:
38. It´s right up here.
Jimmy pulls up to the curb outside of her house.
Jimmy:
There you go. It was nice to meet you, Chantay. Don´t be afraid to come up and say hi, if we meet at school.
Chantay smiles widely.
Chantay:
You´d be seen with me?
Jimmy:
I have 8 months left there. Why should I care, what a bunch of people, most of whom I won´t see again, think? You´re different from my other friends. Sort of young and unspoiled, you could say. They´ll like you too.
Chantay:
I should get inside. I´ll see you in school.
Jimmy:
Sweet dreams, Chantay.
Chantay:
Thanks, I mean, you too!
She smiles nervously at him and gets out of this car.
11. Ext. Street. Evening.
Chantay waves goodbye to Jimmy, as he drives away. She does a little celebratory dance on her way to the front door.
12. Int. McDonald´s Evening.
Peter, Danny and Darcy are waiting in the line.
Peter:
I need to drain the lizard. Can you get me a medium strawberry?
Darcy:
Will do.
He hands her the money and heads off to the bathroom.
Danny:
What are you getting?
Darcy:
I´ve always been a chocolate girl! I would eat chocolate all the time, if it wasn´t so fattening and rotted your teeth.
Danny:
Me too. The darker the better.
Darcy:
You´re preaching to the choir! I´m sorry, your date didn´t work out.
Danny:
Or as I like to call it "The Night of the Many Disasters"! I´ll never get a chance with her again, if I had one to begin with. Has she talked about me to you?
Darcy:
Not specifically. I hate to be the one to say it, but she doesn´t like you that way. You never had a chance with her, even if tonight had gone perfectly.
Danny takes it in, but doesn´t look too upset.
Darcy:
You´re a catch, Danny. If she can´t see that, then it´s her loss.
Danny:
You´re only saying that to be nice.
Darcy:
Don´t be so sure.
They make eye contact and there´s a clear spark between them, that none of them are sure how to deal with.
13. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Paige and Hazel come walking up the hallway.
Paige:
Is it better today?
Hazel:
Yeah, I got my cry on in a big way, when I came home. It feels like I´ve been cleansed of all things Jimmy related.
She sees Jimmy talking to Chantay and it´s clear that she´s not over it.
Hazel:
He´s found a new one already? Who´s she?
Paige:
Don´t you remember her from tryout´s? She had some French sounding name. Chanel or something like that.
Hazel:
Like the perfume? It´s fitting, considering how she´s all over Jimmy!
Paige:
I don´t think that´s her actual name. Look, they´re not even touching. You´re over reacting, Hon.
Hazel:
Mark my words. They will sooner or later and I´m putting my money on sooner! Unless I do something to stop it.
Paige looks like she´s about to object, but a look from Hazel shuts her up.
Paige:
I won´t say anything about how psycho that sounds!
Hazel:
All is fair in love and war!
Paige can´t help looking a little concerned.
14. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Danny and Derek are talking before class. Derek is amused.
Derek:
Now I wish, I would have gone!
Danny:
There´s no way it could have gone worse. I didn´t just lose the battle, I burned every bridge and salted the earth on my way out!
Derek:
There´s plenty of fish in the sea. So what, if you struck out with the first one?
Danny:
I think that a girl might have flirted with me, but I´m not sure.
Derek:
Describe it to me.
Danny:
She told me that I´m a catch, but I thought she was joking around.
Derek:
Why would you think that?
Danny:
She´s not the kind of girl, I thought could like me.
Derek:
She´s out of your league, is what you´re saying?
Danny:
I thought so, but when I called her out on it, she said that I "Shouldn´t be so sure". What do you make of that?
Derek:
She likes you. It´s clear as daylight.
Danny:
I don´t know why she would, since I haven´t done anything to lead her on. Not knowingly, anyway.
Derek:
Sometimes these things happen for no particular reason. Would you go out with her?
Danny:
Maybe. She´s super nice and hot as hell, on top of it!
Derek:
Then go for it! What do you have to lose, except for your virginity, if you´re really lucky?
He sees Darcy come in and they wave at each other. Derek quickly puts two and two together.
Derek:
Darcy, the ultimate sex goddess of love? She´s the flirting girl?
Danny:
I just call her Darcy.
Danny and Darcy smile at each other, before she sits down next to Chantay. He doesn´t look dismissive of it in any way.
CLOSING CREDITS
