WHAT IF? - SEASON 2 EPISODE 10 - DIAMONDS AND PEARLS PART 2

1. Int. Ellie´s Room. Evening.
Ellie is trying to read a "Buffy - The Vampire Slayer" comic book, but she´s so tired, that she´s getting cross eyed. Realizing that she can´t remember what she´s read, she has to go back a few pages, but quickly gives it up. She puts the comic away and kisses her cheap ring, before turning the light off and going to sleep. We fade to:
2. Int. Crypt. Night.
Ellie the Vampire Slayer is kicking butt on a pair of hapless Vampires, who don´t stand a chance against her.
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
What´s that thing, you don´t want in your room?
She quickly does away with the Vampires and "Dusts them".
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
Dust!
Manny (dressed as a fictional version of Faith (the sexy Vampire slayer turned bad, for those not in the know), comes into the crypt.
Fictional Manny/Faith:
Wow, Ell. Your little quips keep getting worse!
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
It´s like I´m losing my ability to pun!
Fictional Manny/Faith:
You´re losing more than that.
"Buffy/Ellie" looks worried, as "Faith/Manny" looks triumphant.
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
What did you do this time?
Fictional Faith/Manny:
I didn´t do anything. They did.
Buffy´s "Crew" consisting of JT as Xander, Jimmy as Giles, Paige as Cordelia and Liberty as Willow, come in.
Fictional Jimmy/Giles:
We´re deeply sorry, Ellie, but you must understand that saving the world has to come first.
Fictional Liberty/Willow:
We can still hang out! After we´re done saving the world, of course!
Fictional JT/Xander:
Yeah, Ell. It´s not like we´ll never see each other again.
Everyone looks at Paige/Cordelia to say something, making her annoyed.
Fictional Paige/Cordelia:
What?
Fictional JT/Xander:
Say something nice to cheer her up!
Fictional Paige/Cordelia:
I guess your hair could look worse today!
The other look annoyed with her.
Fictional Paige/Cordelia:
I can´t lie to her and pretend, that it´s a good thing! If this doesn´t make her feel like the world´s biggest loser, I don´t know what will!
Fictional JT/Xander:
Try it with a little less honesty next time, Paigy!
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
But I´m the slayer! You can´t save the world without me!
Fictional Manny/Faith:
They decided that since you´re getting married, you´re not as dedicated to the cause, as we are.
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
Guys, she´s evil! Remember when she tried to kill us?
Fictional Jimmy/Giles:
Yes, but now that we can´t count on you to save us, we have to settle for what we have.
Ellie sulks and throws her stake away.
Fictional Ellie/Buffy:
I´m supposed to be the chosen one!
Fictional Manny/Faith:
Don´t be sad! I´m sure being a homemaker will be just as exciting as being a Vampire slayer. It´ll all be five by five!
The others can´t help themselves from laughing, as "Buffy Ellie" looks sad. We fade to:
3. Int. Ellie´s Room. Morning.
Ellie´s alarm clock rings, but she´s already up and staring up at the ceiling.
Ellie:
What were you thinking, when you said yes?
She takes the ring off and hides it under the covers under the "Out of sight, out of mind" principle.
OPENING CREDITS
4. Int. Hallway. Day.
Ellie isn´t looking as cheerful as she was the day before. She runs into Marco and Ashley, as she heads up the hallway, but barely notices him because she´s so tired.
Marco:
Earth to Ellie!
She more or less comes to and smiles at them, but soon has to yawn.
Ashley:
Were you out partying all night?
Ellie:
Very funny, Ash! I had this weird dream and I could fall asleep, after it woke me up.
Marco:
What was it about?
Ellie:
I was Buffy again. Only this time, I was losing my slayer powers.
Ashley:
Have you ever thought about making your Buffy dreams into fan fiction?
Ellie:
I don´t think this one would have gotten many readers!
Marco:
Where´s your ring?
Ellie gets shy and puts her hands in her pockets.
Ellie:
Oh, that. I just didn´t feel like wearing it today. Are we off to class, or are we gonna stand here and talk all morning?
Ellie starts walking, as Marco and Ashley look each other in the eyes. They both clearly see, what´s going on.
5. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Hazel is sitting by herself again, when Paige comes in. She clearly feels sorry for her and walks over to her.
Paige:
Will you bite my head off again, if I sit down next to you?
Hazel:
Not today. I´m not in a biting mood.
Paige takes the seat next to her.
Paige:
The cops told us, that your house had been robbed. Are you okay?
Hazel:
They´re exxagerrating. It´s not like they emptied the house out.
Paige:
Still, it has to be scary to know, that a stranger was in the house without your knowing. I don´t know if I´d ever feel safe at home again, if it had been me!
Hazel doesn´t like Paige digging into it and snaps.
Hazel:
Good thing that it wasn´t you then, wasn´t it?
Paige:
Hazel, I´m just trying to be a friend.
Hazel:
You decided that I wasn´t worthy of your friendship, remember? You´re so fake, that you might as well have been made out of plastic!
Paige stands up and shakes her head.
Paige:
Why did I bother?
She leaves Hazel and goes to sit far away from her. Ashley and Marco have seen the whole thing and clearly aren´t liking, that their two old friends are fighting.
6. Ext. Degrassi. Day.
Amy is doing schoolwork with Alex out in the sun, as are many other students. Ashley and Marco come over to them.
Alex:
It´s a lie. He did not ... oh, hi Ashley!
Amy:
Slap your butts down and join the party!
Ashley:
Can I talk to you in private for a sec?
Amy:
Sure, I guess. Keep my spot warm, Marco.
She gets up and Marco takes her seat next to Alex.
Marco:
What are we studying?
We cut to Ashley and Amy, who have stepped a little away from the rest fo them.
Ashley:
What´s the deal with Hazel?
Amy:
It´s a long story. She´s been on a down hill slope for a while now.
Ashley:
She isn´t acting the Hazel I knew.
Amy:
You can´t tell her, that I told you, but she´s been leading a double life.
Ashley:
How long has this been going on?
Amy:
Since you all decided to ditch her. She´s been lonely, so she started smoking weed.
Ashley:
We are talking about the same Hazel here, aren´t we? I can´t imagine her doing drugs.
Amy:
I sort of got her started.
Ashley rolls her eyes at her.
Ashley:
Amy, you didn´t!
Amy;
I didn´t think, she´d turn into a mix of Harold and Kumar! Now she´s really in trouble and I can´t help feeling, like it´s partly my fault.
Ashley:
What kind of trouble?
Amy:
I probably shouldn´t tell you, but she needs help.
Ashley listens intently.
We cut back to Marco and Alex, who are getting along splendidly.
Alex:
Madonna was a corporate, record company creation! Cindy was the real deal!
Marco:
Someone doesn´t know their pop history! Not to demean Cindy, but ...
Ashley and Amy come back to them.
Ashley:
Save the "Pop Talk" for later. We have work to do!
Alex:
What kind of work?
Ashley:
First we have to save a girl from herself, before we stop one from making a huge mistake. Sound fun?
Alex:
I´m in!
Marco:
You´ll have to fill me in, as we go along.
Ashley:
You two deal with Ellie and we´ll deal with Hazel. I know what to do, I think.
She looks determined, as her mind is racing.
7. Int. Hallway. Day.
Ellie is getting things out of her locker, while Marco and Alex watch her from afar. Alex looks almost giddy.
Alex:
I can´t wait! I´ve never done anything like this before!
Marco:
If we hit her with a one-two punch, that should at least have her on the ropes.
Alex:
I didn´t have you picked for a boxing fan?
Marco:
A sport where one half naked, muscular guy fights another half naked, muscular guy?
Alex:
I guess if you look at it that way!
Marco:
It´s now or never. Move!
He gives Alex a pad on the back and she walks over to Ellie, who looks a little intimidated of her.
Alex:
Ellie Nash. Just the girl, I was looking for!
Ellie looks nervous and takes a step back.
Ellie:
Whatever it is, I didn´t do it!
Alex:
You´re not marrying Jay then? That´s a relief!
Ellie looks at the same time relieved not to be getting beat up and worried at what Alex said.
Ellie:
Would it be that bad, if we did?
Alex:
Can you imagine Jay walking up the aisle? If you ask me, you dodged a bullet! I mean, he´s fine for a boyfriend, but marriage? That´s for life! And let´s face it, as much as I like him, Jay isn´t exactly "Mr. Reliable".
Ellie:
He has been to me.
Alex:
That´s great! I´m glad to hear, that he´s grown up, since I dated him! Trust me, that guy wasn´t someone, a nice girl like you would have wanted anything to do with!
Ellie looks suspicious.
Ellie:
Why are you saying these things? Jay thinks of you as one of his best friends and he would never say anything bad about you.
Now it´s Alex, who can´t stop herself from smiling a little.
Alex:
I didn´t mean it like that. He could be really sweet, when he wanted to. To tell you the truth, you could do a lot worse than him. Just don´t get married too soon, okay? You don´t want to end up like my mom, believe me!
Ellie:
I´m sorry. Is this gonna take a lot longer, because I need to get to French?
Alex:
Au revoir, then.
Ellie leaves her and heads to class. Marco comes over to Alex.
Marco:
Did it work?
Alex:
I´m not sure I want to do this anymore, if it´s gonna break them up.
Marco:
Not you too?
Alex:
Jay needs a girl like her in his life, badly! Plus, she does seem to really be in love with him. Maybe them marrying wouldn´t be the worst thing, that could happen to either of them.
Marco:
Sure, when they´re older and know what they´re doing! Jeez! Do I have to do everything myself?
Marco gets out his cell phone and calls someone. He puts the phone to his ear.
Marco:
Mrs. Nash, how have you been? It´s Marco, your daughter´s friend.
He waits for her to reply, as Alex walks away from him.
8. Int. Girl´s Room. Day.
Ashley and Paige have retreated to the girl´s room, so they could speak in private.
Paige:
Hazel? As in Hazel Aden?
Ashley:
I didn´t have her picked for a dope fiend either, but it explains a lot.
Paige:
Why didn´t I see it?
Ashley:
She doesn´t get high at school. It´s not like we can keep an eye on her 24/7.
Paige:
I would offer her my help, but she´d probably chew me out again.
Ashley:
What you did was kind of bitchy. Not that I can claim to have been a good friend either.
Paige:
What do we do? She´s still our friend, isn´t she?
Ashley:
I have an idea, that might work. I´ll need your help, though.
Paige:
Anything. It´s time we got her back on track.
Ashley looks pleased at how dedicated Paige looks to it.
9. Int. Computer Lab. Day.
Hazel is staring at her screen in frustration, while she tries pressing a bunch of buttons on the keyboard. Amy is sitting next to her.
Hazel:
Don´t do this to me!
Amy:
I´m sure you pressing a bunch of buttons, isn´t making things go faster!
Hazel:
I would want to go home, if I don´t have to face the guilt, every time I see my mom!
Amy:
Do you have to go straight home after school?
Hazel:
Not if I don´t feel like it.
Amy:
What do you say we go to The Dot?
Hazel:
Why not? It´s not like it will get me in more trouble.
Amy:
Good, because I have a surprise for you.
Hazel smiles a little.
Hazel:
What is it?
Amy:
You´ll see. The only thing I´ll tell you, is that I guarantee, you´ll love it!
The promise of a nice surprise has Hazel cheered up a little.
10. Ext. Street. Day.
Hazel has her eyes closed and is being led up the street to The Dot by Amy.
Hazel:
This is ridiculous! Can I open them now?
Amy looks through the window and makes eye contact with Paige. They wave at each other.
Amy:
Soon. We have to do a left turn soon, so brace yourself.
Hazel:
Consider me braced!
Amy opens the door and leads her inside.
11. Int. The Dot. Day.
We see that Paige, Terri, Marco, Ashley and Spinner were waiting for Hazel, who comes in with Amy.
Amy:
You can open them now.
Hazel does and looks confused.
Hazel:
What´s this?
Paige:
This is your friends coming together to help you.
Terri:
I don´t know the details and I don´t need to. If my friend is in trouble, then I´m always ready to help.
Hazel can´t help smiling.
Hazel:
I didn´t think we were friends anymore.
Spinner:
Don´t you know us better than that? By the way, Jimmy would have been here, but he´s still grounded. You have to settle for him being here in spirit.
Marco:
We never stopped caring about you, Hazel.
Paige:
If we can help you, then that´s what we´ll do. Just tell us how.
Hazel almost starts crying with joy and her friends give her a group hug.
Hazel:
Sorry, you guys, it´s just ...
Ashley:
You don´t have to explain. Just tell us, what you need.
Hazel:
I need three hundred dollars, but I wouldn´t expect it of you.
Her friends all start getting out what ever money they have.
Hazel:
Seriously, it´s my own problem.
Spinner:
Nonsense. I have twenty ... something dollars!
Paige:
I have three hundred in my account, but we´ll need to stop by an ATM.
Hazel looks both relieved and very moved by it all.
Hazel:
I don´t know what to say.
Paige:
Say that you´ll be our friend again and come back to our group, where you belong. It´s been long enough.
Hazel:
I couldn´t agree more!
Marco:
Is it me, or is it sounding like it´s "Hug it Out Time"?
Hazel gives Paige a big hug. The others look happy for them.
12. Int. Ellie´s House. Day.
Ellie comes home from school and closes the door behind herself.
Ellie:
Hi, mom! It´s just me!
She comes into the living room and is surprised to see Jay waiting for her there with her mom.
Ellie:
Why aren´t you at work?
Jay:
This was more important.
Ellie´s Mom:
I called him, after Marco told about your engagement. How could you not tell me something like that?
Ellie:
I was going to. I just hadn´t ...
Jay:
Tell me honestly. Are you having second thoughts?
Ellie smiles sadly at him.
Ellie:
It´s not that I don´t want to maybe marry you someday. Truth be told, I can´t imagine spending my life with anyone else.
An air of relief comes over the room.
Ellie´s Mom:
You really love him that much, Honey?
Ellie smiles and nods.
Jay:
You´re lucky that I love you just as much, Ellie Nash.
Ellie´s Mom:
If that´s the case, I think it´s time we introduced Jay to the rest of the family.
Ellie:
That sounds more like the kind of step, I can handle right now!
She looks pleased at how it all turned out.
13. Ext. Police Station. Day.
Amy and Hazel come out from the police station. Hazel looks more at ease than she has in a while.
Amy:
What did they say?
Hazel:
Funnily enough, it wasn´t the first time that a teenager had lied to their parents and gotten in trouble because of it!
Amy:
Shocking, huh? So, you´re off the hook?
Hazel:
More or less. I have the necklace back, I´ve mostly told the cops the truth. All that´s left is my mom.
Amy:
You left out what you spent the money on, didn´t you?
Hazel:
They don´t need to know everything.
Amy:
Look Hazel, I know that I´m hardly one to preach with my crazy past, but you´re heading down a slope, you don´t want to go down.
Hazel:
I´ve learned my lesson. There´s a time and place for smoking dope and it´s called college!
Amy:
Just promise me that you won´t sell more stuff, so you can high every day.
Hazel:
I don´t need it anymore. Not now that I have my friends back.
She smiles to herself and Amy looks happy for her.
14. Int. Hazel´s House. Day.
Hazel is being stared down by her mom, who´s holding the necklace.
Mrs. Aden:
I don´t understand, why you would pawn it.
Hazel:
I needed money for clothes and things.
Mrs. Aden:
You could have come to us for money, if you needed it that badly.
Hazel:
I know. Look, I´m really sorry, okay? There´s something else, I have to come clean about. I haven´t been going to my prayer group. That was an excuse to go out at night.
Mrs. Aden shakes her head at the news.
Mrs. Aden:
I´ll have to tell your father.
Hazel:
Then tell him. I still have the same rules, I did when I was thirteen.
Mrs. Aden:
It´s those friends of yours again, isn´t it?
Hazel:
It´s me telling you and dad, that I´m not gonna live the way Somalian girls do back in Somalia. I´m Canadian and I deserve the right, to live like the other Canadian girls do.
Mrs. Aden clearly doesn´t like it, but is mostly just happy to have the necklace back.
15. Int. Ellie´s Room. Evening.
Ellie is lying on top of Jay, who´s lying on her bed. They kiss and she laughs.
Ellie:
I´ll be sure to check twice, the next time you ask me!
Jay:
When would you like that to be?
Ellie:
How about on my 21st birthday?
Jay:
Are you sure you´ll be ready by then?
Ellie:
I can promise, that I´ll be more ready.
Jay:
That´s enough for me. Now we just have to take a little more than three years more of each other, before we get there.
Ellie:
It probably won´t be as bad, as it sounds!
He tickles her sides to get back at her and she giggles.
Jay:
Do you think, we´ll make it that far?
Ellie:
I know, we can.
They kiss.
