Hazel, Paige, Ellie, Marco and Terri are celebrating passing their mid terms with dinner at The Dot. They all hold up their glasses.
Hazel:
To the end of our last mid terms at Degrassi!
They toast and drink.
Ellie:
Just a winter formal to go and Christmas, here we come!
Marco:
Plus New Year´s Eve. I´m expecting all of you to come to my party.
Terri:
No one here would miss it for anything.
Paige:
Isn´t it kind of weird, that we´re doing all these "lasts"? The last mid-term, the last winter formal. Before we know it, it´ll be prom and we´re hugging goodbye.
Ellie:
Have you figured out, who you´re going with to the formal?
Paige:
I THOUGHT (stares Marco down) that I had a standing date with someone in cases like this, but he´s bailed on me.
Marco:
Hazel asked me first, Hon. Sorry.
Ellie:
Can´t you find real dates?
Marco:
Let´s see, my choices come down to Dylan, who would only go with me out of pity, since he´s seeing someone and ... that´s it!
Terri:
There´s more than two gay guys in Toronto! You´re telling us, that you can´t find one to go to the dance with?
Marco:
Where are all these terrific gay guys then, because I can´t see them anywhere?
Terri:
Have you tried looking on-line?
Marco and Hazel clearly hadn´t and look at each other.
Hazel:
I don´t know. The idea of going with someone, I don´t know kind of scares me.
Terri:
Which is why you chat with the guy first, before you meet him. I´d give it a shot, if I were you.
Paige:
Plus, don´t you think it would it make Jimmy jealous, if you showed up with some super hot hunk on your arm?
Marco:
I don´t think it´s for me, but if you want to give it a try, you should. I can just go with Paige.
Paige:
See? Everyone wins!
Hazel doesn´t look dismissive of the idea.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Paige is holding a coin in front of Hazel, who looks a little nervous.
Paige:
You´re sure, this is how you want to settle it?
Hazel:
The dance is tomorrow. I have to decide now.
Paige:
You call it.
Hazel:
Okay, so heads is the guy from Western and tails is the guy from Lakehurst.
Paige flips the coin in the air and they let it fall on the ground, before looking at it. Hazel looks a little disappointed.
Paige:
I guess, you´re going with the Lakehurst guy. Of course, we could flip again and not tell anyone.
Hazel:
No, it´s fine. Fate has spoken and I´m going to the formal with Damien from Lakehurst!
Paige:
It doesn´t bug you, that he has the same name as the creepy kid from "The Omen", who was Satan re-incarnated?
Hazel:
I´m sure this Damien can´t be that bad! He seemed okay, when I chatted with him. Straight A student, class president, it all sounds great on paper.
Paige:
Almost too good, if you ask me. No one´s that perfect!
She picks up the coin, as Manny and Liberty come walking past them. Hazel shoots murder eyes Liberty´s way, but Liberty doesn´t notice, which just annoys her even more. We follow Manny and Liberty.
Liberty:
How can you not go?
Manny:
It´s just one dance, plus Joey and Caitlin really want to go their Christmas Party. Considering everything they´ve done for me, this is the least I can do for them.
Liberty:
At least you´ll have JT for company. I guess, he isn´t one for looking at happy couples these days. Not that I can blame the poor guy.
Manny:
Don´t worry about us. We´ll send you happy thoughts for your date with Jimmy all evening, while we goof off with Angie and Julia.
Liberty:
Am I dreaming? I never thought a guy like Jimmy Brooks would ask me to a dance!
Manny:
He´s seeing, what the rest of us have seen for years. Some secrets can´t be kept forever, no matter how well you try to hide them.
The girls smile at each other and Liberty looks excited for the dance.
3. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Spinner is trying to contain himself from laughing, to Jimmy´s annoyance. Amy finds it funny too.
Jimmy:
Are you gonna be like this tomorrow?
Spinner:
Sorry, dude! It´s still funny!
Amy:
What can you possibly have in common with the queen of the nerds?
Jimmy:
She´s perfect for me.
Spinner:
I can see how she would be perfect, if you needed help with your homework!
Jimmy:
If you give her a chance, then you´ll see what I see. She´s a cool chick, when you get to know her.
Amy:
I just hope she doesn´t talk school all night! Once that final attendance bell rings, I don´t want to spend a second thinking about it, until we have to come back in January!
Spinner:
Amen! Just tell me one thing and look me in the eyes, when you do,
Jimmy looks him in the eyes.
Spinner:
Tell me that this isn´t about you wanting to "Win the break up" with Hazel, because that´s kind of how it seems to me.
Jimmy:
Nothing could be further from the truth! I like Liberty, end of story!
Hazel comes into the classroom with Paige and is one big smile. They come over to Amy and the boys and sit down close to them.
Amy:
What´s up with the smiley face?
Hazel:
Just that I have the greatest date ever for the winter formal!
Spinner:
It isn´t one of the guys from the Football team, is it? I keep telling you girls, they´re not worth it!
Hazel:
Those Neanderthals aren´t fit to tie my shoes! You wouldn´t know him, but he´s a Junior, who´s class president at Lakehurst.
Amy:
Class president! If you like over achievers, then you sure scored the jackpot!
Hazel:
Thanks, Amy. It´s nice to see, that someone here can be happy on their friend´s behalf!
Jimmy tries to hide his jealousy by mocking her.
Jimmy:
A Junior? Robbing the cradle, are we?
Paige:
Aren´t you going with a Junior?
Hazel smiles, that Paige got one back at him.
Jimmy:
Girls mature faster that guys. Everyone knows that!
Hazel:
Have fun with your lab geek at the formal, Jimmy. I´ll be partying with the elite, as far as dating prospects go!
She looks to him for a jealous reaction and gets some satisfaction, when he avoids her eye contact.
4. Ext. Degrassi. Evening.
We´ve cut to the night of the formal and Hazel and Terri are outside the school in their fancy dresses. Hazel looks nervous, but Terri is more used to it.
Hazel:
This is the worst idea, anyone has ever had! What if he turns out to be a creep?
Terri:
Then you tell him, there won´t be a second date.
Hazel:
Have you had any misses?
Terri:
A few, but with all those fish in the sea, what does a few matter?
Hazel:
I almost wish, he doesn´t turn up. Change that. I wish, that he doesn´t turn up!
Terri:
Isn´t that him there?
They see Damien coming towards them. He´s quite handsome and dressed in a fancy suit, but there´s something not quite right with the picture. Hazel looks like she´s ready to run away.
Hazel:
How do you start off one of these things?
Terri:
You say "Hi, I´m Hazel. It´s nice to meet you".
Hazel:
I can see, how that would work!
Damien comes over to them and smiles at Hazel.
Damien:
I take it, you must be Hazel, based on your picture.
Hazel:
Yeah, that´s right! Hazel is me!
Terri smiles to herself at Hazel´s nervousness and sees the need to help her.
Terri:
I´m Terri. Hazel and me go back years.
Damien:
It´s nice to meet you too, Terri.
Terri:
They´ve made it look like a million bucks in there. Shall we?
Damien:
Sure. I didn´t know whether to bring you a gift ...
Hazel:
That´s fine. If anything, it takes the pressure off, so I´m glad, you didn´t.
Damien:
For what it´s worth, this is my first time trying this too.
Hazel:
It is? That´s kind of a relief!
They head inside and Hazel looks a little more at ease.
5. Int. Manny and Craig´s House. Evening.
Angie is hugging Caitlin goodbye. Joey and Caitlin are ready to leave and they also have Manny there with them.
Manny:
Don´t worry about us. You deserve a night on the town.
Joey:
The money is on the kitchen table with the ...
Manny:
You´ve told me a hundred times! I´m sure me and JT with our collective wits, can handle taking care of two kids for an evening.
JT comes out to them with Julia clutching at his leg and being dragged along!
JT:
Sorry, it took a while. Something got stuck to my leg!
Julia:
Don´t go!
Manny:
He´s not going anywhere! Joey and Caitlin are.
Joey and Caitlin smile at how cute it is.
Caitlin:
Someone´s crazy about you, JT.
JT:
Not half as crazy, as I am about her.
Angie:
Come Julia. Let´s see if we can´t find a fun toy, you can play with.
She takes Julia´s hand and leads her into the living room. JT´s wide and loving smile, as he watches them doesn´t escape Manny´s attention.
Joey:
We´ll be home around eleven.
Manny:
Stay out all night, if you feel like it! Everything here is under complete control!
They wave goodbye to each other and Joey and Caitlin leave them. Manny drags JT into the kitchen and kisses him.
JT:
What was that for?
Manny:
You´re gonna make the best dad!
JT:
You think so?
Manny:
I do and you know what? It´s super sexy!
She winks at him and they smile at each other.
JT:
I just love kids. It makes it easier.
Manny:
I know. It´s why I love you.
Angie comes in and interrupts them.
Angie:
Can I have a juice box?
Manny:
Sure you can, Honey. They´re in the fridge.
Angie opens the fridge and gets one out before closing it again. She unwraps the straw and sticks it in the top.
Angie:
What are you doing?
JT:
We´re just talking. What do you think? Should we watch cartoons first or order pizza?
Angie:
Pizza!
Manny and JT smile at her childish enthusiasm. It´s obvious to anyone, that the two of them together would probably make perfect picture book parents.
6. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.
The dance is huge and as Terri said, they really made the gymnasium look like a million bucks! Several couples are dancing and having fun including Liberty and Jimmy, Toby and Kendra, Ellie and Jay, Paige and Marco, Mia and Peter, Chantay and Danny and Darcy and Rick. One who doesn´t have a dance partner is Jane, who´s gone "Gothic Rock Girl" with her dress, that´s catching the eyes of everyone. She dances over to Marco and Paige. Marco clearly loves her outfit.
Marco:
The gods of Gothic Rock has sent us their princess!
Paige:
Cute and edgy at the same time! I give that dress a big thumbs up!
Jane:
Thanks. Are you having fun?
Paige:
Who isn´t? Are you here with a date?
Jane:
I figured why go with one person, when I can go with everyone?
Marco:
I love the way you think! If anyone isn´t having fun at this dance, then it´s their own fault, Hon!
Paige:
I might have to trademark my catch phrase, before everyone steals it from me!
Jane:
I guess so, Hon!
Paige:
Stop it! That word is mine!
Jane and Marco smile at each other. Her smile fades though, when she sees Damien dancing very close with an uncomfortable looking Hazel.
Jane:
Urgh! Who brought the worst of Lakehurst here?
Marco and Paige stop dancing and look worried.
Marco:
You know him?
Jane:
That guy is infamous for trying to get into the pants of every girl, he meets.
Paige:
Has he hit on you?
Jane:
Me, Mia and half the other girls in our grade! If it has a decent rack and walks on two legs, then he´s ready to jump into bed with it. If he gets what he wants, then he´s right on to the next one.
Marco:
I´m so disgusted right now, that I can´t put it into words!
Paige:
We have to tell Hazel.
Jane:
I definitely would, before she does something, she´ll regret. MIA! PETER! LET´S DANCE!
She dances over to them and they start three way dancing. Paige and Marco start to form a plan.
We cut to Hazel, who´s got one eye on Jimmy, while she´s dancing with Damien. The song ends and it´s time for a slow dance. He smiles at her as charmingly as he can.
Damien:
Finally. I was starting to think, I needed to have a talk with the DJ.
Hazel clearly isn´t that crazy about the idea of dancing closely with him, but goes along with it when she sees Jimmy and Liberty doing it.
Hazel:
Can you slow dance?
Damien:
Check this out.
He grabs her hand and is clearly very smooth, when it comes to this. Paige and Marco come over to them.
Paige:
Is it possible, that I could steal Hazel away for a moment? Best friend talk.
Damien:
I wouldn´t want to stand in the way of that.
Hazel:
Can´t it wait?
Paige:
No, it can´t, Hon!
Hazel:
I´m sure, it´ll just take a minute.
Damien:
I´ll be right here waiting for you.
She leaves with Paige, leaving Marco and him in an uncomfortable situation.
Marco:
So? How about those Blue Jays?
Damien:
I´m not really into baseball. Are you?
Marco:
No.
They´re left wondering what to talk about.
7. Int. Girl´s Room. Evening.
Several girls are in there, when Paige drags Hazel in.
Paige:
Jane knows him from her Lakehurst days. He a player with a capital P!
Hazel:
That´s sort of the feeling I got too.
Paige:
I can find some guys, who´ll tell him to get lost in a nice way.
Hazel:
Don´t do that!
Paige:
Seriously? Have you lost your mind?
Hazel:
I´ll look like a fool in front of Jimmy. He can´t know that I came here with a loser, especially not when he´s having such a great time with Liberty!
Paige:
Hazel, this whole "Who won the break up" thing has to stop! It´s making you lose the ability to think clearly. Why can´t you be happy for Jimmy and move on?
Hazel:
Why can´t you do that with JT?
Paige:
That´s ... different! Plus, I´m not the one who came here with a mondo creepozoid!
Hazel:
Admit it, Paige. It´s driving you crazy, that neither JT or Manny are here and you have no clue, what they´re doing right now.
Paige sulks, since she can´t deny that Hazel is right. She shakes her head to herself.
Paige:
I really hope, they´re not doing it.
Hazel:
They probably are.
Paige winces at the thought.
8. Int. Manny and Craig´s House. Evening.
Manny and JT are playing "Monopoly" with Angie, who´s winning big and enjoying every moment of it. JT rolls the dice and lands on a chance card. He picks on from the pile and reads it.
JT:
You´re the luckiest person in the world and therefore you win the game!
Angie:
That´s not what it says!
Manny takes the card from him hand and reads it out loud.
Manny:
You have been arrested for not paying your income taxes. Move straight to jail for two turns.
Angie:
Ha, ha! Busted!
JT:
Yes, but you almost fell for it!
Angie:
No, I didn´t! I´m a lot smarter, than you think, I am!
Manny:
It´s also approaching your bedtime, little lady. I vote, that we should declare Angie the winner.
Angie:
I want to play until the end!
Manny:
That could take all night. You know the rules.
Angie:
Okay!
JT:
Hey, I´ve never been a fan of rules either, but they´re there for a reason. You have a whole day tomorrow to have fun, but it won´t be as fun, if you´re sleepy all the time, will it?
Angie:
I´ve never thought about it that way! Now it makes sense!
It´s like a light bulb goes off over her head and JT and Manny find it adorable.
Manny:
Off to bed, Honey. I´ll be listening to make sure, you brush your teeth, so don´t even think you can get away with it!
Angie:
Alright. Nightie night!
JT:
Sleep tight, Angie.
Angie:
JT, you´re like a dad already! You should get some kids of your own!
She leaves them, as they try not to laugh.
Manny:
There you have it from the horse´s mouth!
JT:
She doesn´t know, what she´s talking about!
Manny:
I think, she does. In fact, I can´t think of anyone better, to be Julia´s dad.
JT:
What about Craig?
Manny:
What about him? He calls me every once in a while and the only thing he wants to talk about is Julia and how she´s doing. It feels like, he couldn´t care less how I´m doing. That´s why I´m so glad, I have you.
She takes his hand.
JT:
I wish, you would have told him, before he left.
Manny:
Me too, but it´s too late now. I can´t exactly tell him over the phone either.
JT:
Promise me, that you´re not gonna dump me out of nowhere, when he comes back. After Paige, I don´t know, if I could take it.
She looks him in the eyes.
Manny:
I promise you, that we will be together, the way you want us to. The way we both want us to.
She leans in to kiss him and they start making out.
9. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.
Liberty is taking a break from the dancing to have some punch with Toby and Kendra. Hazel on the other hand is having her troubles with the very grabby Damien.
Hazel:
Stop it! You´ll rip my dress!
Damien:
You don´t have to pretend. We both came here for the same reason, didn´t we?
Jimmy comes over to them and stares Damien down.
Jimmy:
I´m pretty certain, that she didn´t!
Damien finally gets her hands off Hazel, who moves away from him.
Damien:
Mind your own business!
Jimmy:
I can´t, not when it comes to this one.
Hazel for the first time all evening is smiling.
Jimmy:
See, she´s always going to be a lot more to me, than just my ex-girlfriend.
Damien:
I should have figured! Hazel, tell this loser to leave us alone!
Hazel:
Don´t call him a loser. If anyone´s the loser here, it´s you!
Jimmy:
You have a lot to learn about how to treat women. Now, are you gonna leave on your own, or do I need to find some guys and help you with it?
Damien:
I can´t believe this!
He spits at Hazel, who just steps out of the way.
Damien:
Tease! You led me on!
Jimmy:
That´s enough!
He goes to grab Damien, who takes a step back.
Damien:
I can find the door on my own!
He angrily storms away and Hazel looks relieved.
Hazel:
Paige told you?
Jimmy:
Actually, it was Marco. Why would you go here with such a creep?
Hazel:
I didn´t know. He looked perfect on paper.
Jimmy:
Hand on you heart, did it have anything to do with trying to make me jealous?
Hazel looks guilty and nods.
Hazel:
Seeing you with Liberty, made me feel like such a loser, because I haven´t been abe to move on. I thought, that at least if I could win the break up, then it would be a tie and that wouldn´t be as bad.
Jimmy:
We have to stop this, Hazel. Enough is enough.
Hazel:
Agreed. You and Liberty make a cute couple and if you were gonna go with someone, who´s my complete opposite ...
Jimmy:
Hold on! You think, that´s why I like her?
Hazel:
Isn´t it? I must represent everything you hate right now!
Jimmy:
I´ve never hated you. We just weren´t meant to last.
Hazel nods and seems ready to accept it.
Jimmy:
Do you want to get to know her? If you do, then you´ll find out, that you´re not all that different.
Hazel:
I suppose, it can´t hurt.
They walk over to Liberty, Toby and Kendra. Liberty is surprised, but pleased, when Hazel shakes her hand.
10. Int. Manny and Craig´s Room. Evening.
Manny and JT are lying on her and Craig´s bed and are kissing.
Manny:
Did you bring anything?
JT:
Honey, the kids are sleeping!
Manny:
I can be quiet, if you can?
JT:
Manny, I´m a 16 year old male. Doing it quietly, so our parents or in my case my grandmother doesn´t hear, is what we do best!
Manny giggles.
Manny:
We can call it practice, for when we get married someday.
JT:
You want to get married?
Manny:
Sorry! I should have known better than to say the "M" word!
JT:
It´s not that I wouldn´t like to someday, just not now!
Manny smiles.
Manny:
You would? The idea of marriage scares Craig senseless.
JT:
It doesn´t for me. Not when it comes to you.
They hear the front door open and Manny begins to panic.
Caitlin (off screen):
Manny? JT? Are you here?
JT:
I thought, they weren´t coming home for another hour.
Manny:
I guess, old people can´t stay out all night! Act casual.
JT gets off the bed and sits down in a chair. He quickly grabs a magazine and pretends to read it, while Manny grabs her phone. Caitlin comes in.
Caitlin:
Hi, guys. Why aren´t you in the living room?
JT:
We didn´t want to be noisy, so the kids couldn´t sleep.
Manny:
How was the party?
Caitlin:
Good, just exhausting. JT, you do know, you´re reading that magazine upside down, don´t you?
JT quickly turns it around and tries to play it off.
JT:
We had a bet to see, how long it would be, until you´d notice.
Caitlin look suspicious.
Caitlin:
Joey´s waiting downstairs, if you want a ride home.
JT:
I won´t say no to that!
He gets off the chair and just nods at Manny.
JT:
See you tomorrow?
Manny:
Sure.
They smile at each other and he leaves them. Caitlin stares Manny down and Manny looks very small.
Caitlin:
How far have you gone with him?
Manny:
Nowhere.
Caitlin:
Manny?
Manny sees that she´s busted and gives it up.
Manny:
All the way.
Caitlin:
I just had to ask!
Manny:
I swear, I never meant for it to go this far.
Caitlin:
I´m guessing, that Craig doesn´t know?
Manny:
I´ll tell him, when he comes home for Christmas.
Caitlin:
If you don´t, then I will.
Manny looks like part of her is relieved, that it will reach a conclusion soon.
11. Ext. Degrassi. Evening.
Paige, Terri and Marco are saying goodnight to Hazel, who looks to have been cheered up again.
Terri:
My date was a bust too, if it´s any consolation.
Hazel:
Oh, no! Was he clingy too?
Terri:
He was so gay, that I was considering introducing him to Marco! You get those too once in a while!
The others laugh.
Paige:
Better luck next time, Hon!
A car pulls up to the curb.
Terri:
That´s my dad. See you at new years!
She hugs the others goodbye and gets into the car. It drives off.
Paige:
Wanna check if The Dot is still open?
Marco:
Haven´t you spent enough money there this past year?
Paige:
Not yet, apparently.
Hazel:
They´ll be out of business in weeks, when you move away!
Paige waves goodbye to her girls, who are leaving with their boyfriends.
Paige:
They´ll do just fine with the next generation. What about you? Is Jimmy out of your system?
Hazel:
Probably not. But I am ready to move on.
She looks hopeful for the future.
CLOSING CREDITS
