WHAT IF? - SEASON 2 EPISODE 30 - ROCK WITH YOU
Disclaimer: I don´t own Degrassi or the characters from it.
1. Int. Book Store. Day.
Emma is browsing for books with Manny.
Emma:
Spike told me, that it has to be the 1980 biography. He´s read the other one already.
Manny:
Do you remember what it´s called, or who wrote it?
Emma:
No and no! I wish, I´d written it down.
Emma makes eye contact with a very handsome guy, who´s around 19/20 years old. They smile shyly at each other, which Manny notices.
Manny:
Anyone you know?
Emma:
I´ve seen him a few times and we always smile at each other. I have no idea, who he actually is.
Manny:
Don´t you want to find out?
Emma:
I do and I don´t. Things are still up in the air with Sean.
Manny:
I like Sean as much as the next girl, but this is what, five times you´ve broken up?
Emma:
Depending on what you count as a break up.
Manny:
I don´t claim to be a relationship expert, but there´s a clear pattern here. You´re addicted to him!
Emma:
No, I´m not!
Manny:
Then go over and talk to this guy. If you´re not feeling it, then cut the conversation short and come back to me. Just say something to him.
Emma:
This is only to prove, that I´m not addicted to Sean! That´s ridiculous!
Emma quickly fixes her hair and walks over to the guy. Manny looks pleased.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Classroom. Day.
Emma is feeling like a bit of a star, as she´s being questioned by JT, Toby and Liberty. Manny is sitting next to her.
Liberty:
He thinks, you´re in college?
Emma:
I might have said, that I´m 19, so he would invite me.
JT:
Bad girl!
Toby:
Like you wouldn´t have done the same, if anyone could have believed that someone as short as you could be 19?
JT:
I´m not saying, that I wouldn´t have!
Manny:
Your first college party and you´re not even in college yet!
Liberty:
What will you do, if someone finds out your actual age?
Emma:
I can´t see how they would, but if they do, then I´ll quietly sneak out.
Sean comes in and takes a seat not too far from them.
Manny:
Did you hear, Sean? Emma´s going to a college party.
Emma is clearly looking for him to be upset, but is a little annoyed, when he smiles it off.
Sean:
You and a bunch of frat guys? You won´t last half an hour!
Emma:
I was told, that there´ll be girls there too.
Sean:
College partying is going crazy to a level, that you can´t!
JT:
That´s a little rude!
Sean:
Not when it´s the truth. You have a ton of great qualities, Em, but Buddhist monks cut loose more often than you do!
Emma:
Then it´s time I did! I can be a "Party Animal" for an evening.
Sean:
I´ll have to see it, before I believe it!
His words only make her determined to prove him wrong.
3. Int. Hallway. Day.
Spinner and Amy are talking.
Amy:
How many songs are you playing?
Spinner:
Five, probably. Each band gets twenty minutes.
Sean comes over to them.
Sean:
What´s up, guys?
Spinner:
One of the other bands had to cancel. We´re in the battle of the bands!
Sean:
Cool! When is it?
Spinner:
Tonight at Above the Dot. Are you coming?
Amy:
You have to, Sean. Ashley and Alex will be off in "Girlfriend Land", so I´ll need someone to keep me company. You can bring Em, if you want. I won´t mind.
Sean:
She´s going to a frat party, by the sounds of it.
Spinner:
Emma Nelson? Blonde haired Emma?
Amy:
Calling her by different names won´t change it, Spin!
Sean:
I was as surprised, as you are. You know what, Amy? You have yourself a date! I need something to take my mind off it.
They fist bump on it. Jane and Mia come over to them and are looking excited.
Jane:
Do you know, if it´s sold out?
Spinner:
I can´t imagine, that it is.
Jane:
Cool, cuz I was thinking of inviting my brother and my eh ... guy, I´m sort of undefined with.
Mia:
The word she´s looking for is boyfriend!
Jane blushes, which the others find amusing.
Jane:
I told you not to call him that!
Spinner:
I wouldn´t worry, if I were you.
Jane:
Awesome! See ya later!
Jane and Mia leave them.
Spinner:
I guess, we´re meeting Jane´s boyfriend tonight!
Amy:
Is it weird, that I hope, he´s small too, so they´ll look like two little munchkins?
Spinner:
It is, but I love you anyway!
He gives her a kiss on the cheek, that makes her smile.
4. Int. Basement. Evening.
Emma is putting the final touches on her make up and is truly dressed to kill! Manny looks her over and is impressed.
Manny:
There´s gonna be jaws dropping, when they see you!
Emma:
To be honest, I am starting to get cold feet. We both know that I´m not the best, when it comes to meeting people.
Manny:
So ... pretend to be someone, who is good at it!
Emma seems to like the idea.
Emma:
I´m already starting on a lie, so why not go all out with it?
Manny:
Who are you going to be, then?
Emma:
Let´s see. I´m Emma from ... Manitoba!
Manny:
Where, specifically? They will ask.
Emma:
Winnipeg?
Manny:
That´s in Manitoba, last time I checked! What else? You´ll need a background.
Emma:
My parents are both professors ...
Manny:
That makes you sound like a nerd!
Emma:
Okay, so let´s say that my dad is a radio host and my mom is a beautician. That way I only have to remember half a lie!
Manny:
Good thinking! You´re gonna have a blast, Emma. I can feel it!
Emma looks confident, that Manny will be right.
5. Int. Frat House. Evening.
Emma is standing by herself and looking quite alone, as the wild party rages on around her, She´s looking at her "date" drinking a beer bong, while some of his buddies cheer him on.
Frat Guys:
Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!
They cheer, when he finishes it and Emma just shakes her head at it. A girl of around 20 (Maggie) comes over to her and smiles at her.
Maggie:
You´re looking more than a little out of place. I´m Maggie.
Emma:
Emma. Do you go to TU?
Maggie:
Yeah, I started last summer. I don´t remember seeing you there.
Emma:
We probably take different classes.
Maggie:
What´s your major?
Emma thinks fast.
Emma:
Biology. It´s a passion of mine.
Maggie:
My room mate is a biology major. You must know each other.
Emma:
Isn´t that a coincidence?
Emma tries to keep a straight face, making Maggie laugh.
Maggie:
Relax, Emma. I´m lying even more, than you are!
Emma:
You could tell?
Maggie:
I´ve always been good at reading people. I can also easily tell, that you´re not old enough to be here. How old are you?
Emma:
Sixteen. Please don´t tell anyone.
Maggie:
Don´t worry. As someone, who BSéd her way into many frat parties, when I was your age, I would be a total hypocrite to turn you in! Do you want to get a drink?
Emma:
Yeah, sure.
Emma looks happy to be making a friend and follows after Maggie.
6. Int. Above The Dot. Evening.
The competition is about to start and there´s lots of people there, mostly teenagers. Jane leads in Johnny and Lucas. Bullfrog (Eli´s dad) is the emcee for the event.
Bullfrog:
Welcome everyone to the K-TRT Battle of the bands. We have six bands here tonight fighting for the coveted title of best band and the two thousand dollar gift certificate to Gunther´s Music Emporium. First up, please give it up for "Starstruck"!
A band consisting of four girls get on stage with their instruments and start playing a pop rock song.
We cut down to Spinner, Sean and Amy, who are watching them. Spinner looks a bit nervous.
Amy:
They´re nothing special.
Spinner:
Maybe not, but they know how to play basic chords!
Jane brings Johnny and Lucas over to them.
Jane:
Johnny, Lucas, this is Sean, Amy and Spinner.
Lucas:
Which one of you is Spinner?
Sean:
The one, who doesn´t look like Ryan Gosling.
Lucas laughs.
Lucas:
You would fit in perfectly at our school!
Amy:
Which one of you is the brother and which one is the boyfriend?
Jane looks embarrassed, as Lucas and Johnny.
Johnny:
I´m your boyfriend? Don´t you think, you should have told me first?
Spinner:
To be fair to Jane, she has denied it all the time.
Johnny:
That would make you Spinner?
Spinner:
That´s the nick name they gave me.
Lucas:
It fits.
Spinner:
How´s that?
Lucas:
You keep the girls following you around, until it makes their heads spin. I´m thirsty. What do you say, Johnny?
Johnny:
I could use a drink. Are you coming, Jane?
Jane:
In a moment.
Lucas and Johnny leave them and Lucas deliberately bumps into Spinner´s shoulder on the way.
Jane:
Sorry about that. My brother is a caveman, when it comes to social skills!
Spinner:
Is it me, or does he not like me?
Jane:
You and 99 percent of the rest of the world! I´d better go after them.
Jane follows after Johnny and Lucas.
Amy:
I´ve seen both of them down at the ravine, back when it was my hang out.
Sean:
Those guys have bad news written all over them.
Spinner looks a little worried, as the girls on stage rock on and are sounding quite alright.
7. Int. Frat House. Evening.
Emma is waiting by the bathroom with Maggie. A drunk guy comes over to them.
Drunk Guy:
Heyy! How would you two like, to make me the meat in your sandwich?
Emma makes an "Urgh" face.
Maggie:
Sorry, Romeo. We only like girls.
Drunk Guy:
Suit yourself! How long have you waited, cuz I gotta take a dump?
Maggie:
Way too long. I think, that someone´s fallen asleep in there.
Drunk Guy:
Ah, crap! I´ll have to go and do it in the garden.
He waddles off and Emma tries to take it in.
Emma:
You handled that like an expert!
Maggie:
Dumb drunk guys aren´t the hardest to fool! But you do like girls, don´t you? Or are my instincts completely off today?
Emma smiles shyly.
Emma:
That depends. Are you coming on to me?
Maggie:
I might be.
The door opens and a pair of girls come stumbling out and past them.
Maggie:
I would do the girl thing and invite you in, but I have to leave something for your imagination, don´t I?
She smiles flirtingly at Emma, before heading into the bathroom. Emma looks flattered.
Emma (to herself):
This evening just took an interesting turn!
Her face says that she´s flattered.
8. Ext. Frat House. Evening.
Maggie and Emma are taking a small break from the party, that´s still raging on inside, while they have a tropical looking drink.
Maggie:
Have you ever tried kissing a girl?
Emma:
No, the only ones I´ve kissed are my on/off boyfriend, who I´m currently on my fifth break-up with and a piece of slime, who was using me to cheat on his girlfriend. I only kissed him once, but it was enough for one lifetime.
Maggie:
Five times! Are you guys going for a record or something?
Emma:
You´d almost think so, wouldn´t you?
The girls giggle.
Emma:
You could write a book on us and I´m sure, the last page hasn´t been written yet!
Maggie:
That means you´re single now, doesn´t it?
Emma:
Single and ready to mingle!
Maggie:
Is that so? When did you find out?
Emma:
Last year, when I lost my virginity. I can´t believe, I just blurted that out!
Maggie:
You found yourself fantasizing about a girl?
Emma:
I wasn´t expecting to, but she kept popping into my head and then I had this dream. It´s a really long story! How did you find out?
Maggie:
There was a girl, I played soccer with. She found a girlfriend our sophomore year and I all of a sudden found myself being jealous of her. Flash forward to a year later and I had my first girl on girl kiss. After that I knew for sure.
Emma:
Were you scared?
Maggie:
A little, but I was more excited.
Emma:
Are we gonna kiss? That sounded awkward!
Emma looks a little embarrassed. Maggie just smiles at her.
Maggie:
I´ll tell you what. Finish that drink and show me some killer moves on the dance floor. Then we´ll see, if you get lucky tonight.
Emma quickly finishes her drink.
9. Int. Above The Dot. Evening.
Jane and the others are eagerly awaiting their chance to play, at the side of the stage, while Bullfrog introduces them.
Bullfrog:
This next band told me that they picked their name based on the genetic make-up of the band. Please welcome "Two of Each"!
Jane and the others take the stage and Spinner counts them in to start their song.
We cut to Amy and Sean watching the show in the crowd.
Sean:
They´re better than I expected them to be!
Amy:
I´d go so far, as to call them close to decent!
Johnny and Lucas come over to them.
Johnny:
What do you think?
Sean:
We were just saying, that they aren´t too bad!
Lucas:
We agree. (to Amy) It has to sting for you though, to see your boyfriend and my sister up there together.
Amy:
Why should it sting? They´re just friends!
Johnny and Lucas laugh mockingly.
Johnny:
And you´re dumb enough to buy it?
Lucas:
He´s been stringing her along, since they met! You´d have to be blind not to see it!
Sean gets angry and gets in Lucas´ face. His words hit home with Amy, though.
Sean:
Spinner is my friend, so if you have a problem with him, then you have a problem with me!
Johnny:
You think, it´s fine then, for an older guy to take advantage of a young, inexperienced girl, because that´s what he´s doing!
Lucas:
All so he can have his ego stroked by her every day. Meanwhile she´s so stuck on him, that she can´t move on. Is that fair on her?
He stares Amy in the eyes, before they leave them. Amy look shaken up.
Sean:
What a douche! Are you alright?
Amy:
Compared to some of the things I´ve tried, this was a cakewalk!
Sean:
They´re wrong about Spinner. He´s not that kind of guy.
Amy looks up at the stage and at Spinner and Jane, who are clearly enjoying themselves.
Amy:
Sometimes, I´m not so sure.
She looks worried.
10. Ext. Street. Evening.
Emma is waiting by the curb with Maggie for her taxi.
Emma:
I owe you a thanks. Tonight would have been a total bust, if it hadn´t been for you.
Maggie:
I was on the fence about going, but you made it fun for me too. It makes me wish, that I´d met you, when I was your age.
Emma:
Would you have asked me to be your girlfriend?
Maggie:
It´s more likely, that I would have spent weeks leaving little hints in the hope, that you would get it. I was still kind of shy, when I was 16.
Emma:
It sounds nice. Would you have asked me out on a date?
Maggie:
With sweaty palms, stuttering and the whole nine yards of embarrassment. Would you have said yes?
Emma moves in close to her and puts her arms around her.
Emma:
I would, if I knew that the night would end this way.
The two girls kiss, as they hold each other close. They look longingly at each other afterwards.
Maggie:
Why couldn´t you be a few years older?
Emma:
Or you a few years younger.
They´re interrupted by the taxi pulling up to the curb.
Maggie:
There´s your ride. Did you find out?
Emma:
I´d say, I did.
Emma leaves her and gets in the taxi. They wave goodbye to each other, as the taxi drives off.
11. Int. The Dot. Evening.
The band, plus Amy and Sean are celebrating. Jane raises her glass.
Jane:
Here´s to not finishing last!
They toast on it and drink.
Marco:
Darcy, you were killing it tonight! I didn´t hear you, play any wrong notes at all!
Darcy:
That can only be, because you were too busy trying to hear your own mistakes!
Mia, plus Jane and Darcy´s other close friends from their grade, Danny, Derek, Chantay and Peter come in. Darcy smiles.
Darcy:
I didn´t know, you came!
Chantay:
We couldn´t miss your first gig!
Peter:
Where by the way, you kicked butt!
Darcy looks delighted and gives hugs all around.
Amy:
Spinner, can we talk outside?
Spinner:
Sure. What about?
Amy:
I´d rather not say in front of everyone else.
They get up and head outside. Sean is the only one who notices.
12. Ext. The Dot. Evening.
Spinner and Amy come outside.
Amy:
I want you to be honest with me.
Spinner:
This sounds serious!
Amy:
It is.
She looks him in the eyes.
Amy:
Have you been leading Jane on?
Spinner:
Where are you getting this from?
Amy:
Whether you know it or not, you are. Her brother told me, that she can´t move on from you.
Spinner:
I´ve never even had a conversation with the guy. He doesn´t know me!
Amy:
I deserve an honest answer, after how long we´ve been a couple. Are you?
Spinner looks frustrated and clearly doesn´t want to admit it to himself.
Spinner:
Maybe. I don´t know! Everything was perfect, I had you and not a doubt in my head, that you were the one. Then this girl comes into my life, where it´s like we were practically created to be together.
She gets the message and starts crying, making him feel guilty.
Spinner:
Amy, don´t cry! I still want to be with you!
Amy:
But you also want to be with her, don´t you?
Spinner:
I don´t know, what I want! Is that, what you wanted to hear?
Amy wipes her eyes and tries to calm down.
Amy:
No, but it was what I needed to hear. Good luck with her, Spin. We´re through.
She walks away from him, leaving him looking frustrated.
13. Int. Basement. Day.
Manny has come over to help Emma move back up to her old room. They´re packing her things into boxes, while Joey and Snake fight with getting her bed up the stairs.
Joey:
You must have got it down here somehow!
Snake:
Maybe if we try getting it out at an angle.
The girls can´t help being a little amused at how amateurish they are, but they somehow manage to get it out.
Manny:
That´s one nice thing about being a girl. We always have an excuse, why we don´t have to move furniture!
Emma:
We´ll chuck that up as a victory for the double X chromosome!
Manny:
You´re all about the girl power these days, aren´t you?
Manny smiles teasingly at Emma, who blushes a little.
Emma:
Stop it! I knew, I shouldn´t have told you!
Manny:
What was it like?
Now it´s Emma, who smiles teasingly at Manny.
Emma:
Are you looking to find out for yourself?
Manny:
I´m curious! Was it the same or different?
Emma:
It was both. The same because a kiss is at the end of the day, is still just a kiss and different, because it was so new and exciting. She tasted really good too, after those drinks we had!
Manny looks happy for her.
Manny:
So, are we talking a major life changing event, or something you tried out?
Emma:
I don´t know yet. I have to let this sink in first, before I can make a decision.
Manny:
You still like guys, don´t you?
Emma:
Yeah, of course I do! But I´m not ruling the right girl out any more, as a possibility.
Emma looks glad, that she tried it.
CLOSING CREDITS
