WHAT IF? - SEASON 2 EPISODE 38B - OFF THE WALL
Disclaimer: I don´t own Degrassi or the characters from it.
Author´s Note: Why is there an episode 38B, you´re probably wondering? The reason is simply that the rest of the season had already been written, when I came up with this one and it didn´t feel to me like the season would have been complete without it. It decided to do it this way, since it´s sort of a sister episode to episode 38, in that it´s basically one long story with one character, in this case Spinner. I hope you´ll enjoy it.
1. Int. Rehearsal Room. Evening.
We open on Spinner and Marco, who are in the middle of chugging a pair of beers. Jane and Darcy egg them on.
Jane/Darcy:
Chug, chug, chug, chug!
Spinner is clearly better at chugging than Marco is and finishes his first. He lets out an "Ahh" and is looking pretty drunk. Marco finishes his and it´s like the eyes are rolling around in his head. He´s almost about to fall backwards, when Spinner saves him from falling.
Spinner:
Easy, champ! Is it lie down time?
Marco:
It´s nightie night time.
Spinner:
Fair enough.
He drags Marco over to a couch and helps him lie down. The girls look a little worried.
Darcy:
Are you okay, Marco?
Marco:
Mmm (indicating yes).
Spinner:
That´s drunk for yes.
Darcy:
I should be getting home too or I´ll never make curfew.
She grabs her guitar case and gets ready to leave.
Jane:
Are you coming to Chantay´s movie night tomorrow?
Darcy:
I wouldn´t miss it for the world. Bye, guys.
Spinner:
Get home safely, Darce.
Darcy:
I´m more worried about you, than I am about me. Take good care of him, Jane.
Jane:
You know, I will.
Darcy waves goodbye to them and leaves them.
Spinner:
I guess that´s the end of our "we finally have a decent rehearsal room" party.
Jane:
Which we should follow up with a "we finally played a song without making any mistakes in our new rehearsal room" party. Once it happens.
The two of them laugh.
Spinner:
We´ll get there. I know where there´s another party, one that´s probably more happening than here, if you want to go?
Jane:
Sounds cool.
Spinner:
There will be a massive amount of drinking and probably weed smoking going on there. I hope that´s not a problem.
Jane:
Spin, the only reason I´m not drinking is because I´m still in hot water from the last time.
Spinner:
You can sleep at my house, if you want. My mom likes you, I´m sure she won´t mind.
Jane:
In that case, I think we´re off to party our minds out, aren´t we?
Spinner:
I guess we are!
They smile at each other and fist bump. We fade to:
2. Int. Spinner´s Room. Morning.
Spinner wakes up in his bed and he´s looking more than a little worse for wear. He slowly opens his eyes and tries to lift his head, but he gives up.
Spinner:
How much did I have last night? My head!
He tries again and somehow managed to sit up. He looks around and is a little relieved.
Spinner:
At least you managed to get home somehow. The question is how?
He yawns, but makes wide eyes, when he sees a bra on the floor. Hearing footsteps approaching the door, he braces himself for the worst.
Spinner (to himself):
Don´t be Heather Sinclair!
The door opens and he´s a little relieved to see that it´s Jane, who´s wearing a Ramones t-shirt that´s so large, that it probably belongs to Spinner. She´s looking a lot fresher than he is and smiles widely at him. He tries to force one back for her, even though it hurts his head to smile.
Jane:
Morning sleepy head. Did I wear you out last night?
Her words hit him like a ton of bricks, as she gets under the covers with him.
Jane:
You wore me out. I slept like a stone.
Spinner:
What exactly did we do?
Jane:
Is there anything we didn´t do? If there is, I haven´t heard about it.
Spinner lies down and stares up at the ceiling in disbelief. Jane lies her head down on his chest and smiles to herself.
Jane:
Wouldn´t it be great, if we could lie in bed and stay naked all day?
Spinner:
A-huh?
Spinner puts his hand up to his head and rubs his temples, as he tries his best to remember what exactly it is he´s done with her.
OPENING CREDITS
3. Ext. Degrassi. Morning.
It´s Monday morning and Spinner is arriving at school with Marco, who finds it hysterically funny.
Marco:
And you still have no idea, what did with her that night?
Spinner:
I can guess, but no. Apparently I was really good at it.
Marco:
Man! Who knew that you and my uncle Emilio had something in common?
Spinner:
Your uncle Emilio?
Marco:
He does his best work when he´s drunk too!
Marco gets a small head start, before Spinner chases him inside.
4. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Spinner and Marco come walking up the hallway and he sees Darcy and Mia coming towards them. Feeling embarrassed, he slows down.
Marco:
Move it. We´re late.
Spinner:
What if she´s told them? They had a movie night last night.
Marco:
I´m sure they had more interesting things to talk about.
Spinner can´t believe his eyes, when he sees that both Mia and Darcy are practically eating him with their eyes, as they approach him.
Mia:
Morning, Handsome.
Darcy:
Let me know if you´re handing out rides to The Spinner Express.
She winks at him as the girls pass them. Spinner is looking gobsmacked, while Marco is trying his best not to laugh.
Spinner:
Am I in an episode of "The X Files"?
Marco:
More like the triple X files!
Marco continues on, half laughing to himself, as Spinner tries to comprehend what´s going on.
5. Int. Classroom. Morning.
Spinner comes into the classroom, still trying to comprehend what´s happening.
Ellie:
Here, Spinner. Sit with me!
Spinner looks over at Ellie, who´s waving him over.
Terri:
And leave your old friend hanging?
Hazel:
Or you could sit with me. You don´t mind, do you Paige?
Paige:
Yes, because he´s sitting with me!
Spinner mouths "what the ..." to himself.
Spinner:
I´ll sit with Marco, ladies.
All four of them look disappointed, as Spinner takes a seat neat to Marco. He holds his head in his hands.
Spinner:
Why is this happening?
Marco:
If I had to take one guess, it would be the school gossip princess, who spent last evening in Jane´s company.
He looks over at Spinner, who shakes his head in frustration.
6. Int. Hallway. Day.
Spinner is talking to Chantay, who´s fixing up her make-up in a small mirror, that´s taped to the inside of the door of her locker.
Spinner:
Chantay, what exactly have you been telling people? I need to know.
Chantay:
You couldn´t expect me not to! It´s the gossip story of the month, maybe even counting next month and I´m first with it!
Spinner tries to keep calm, since she´s apparently not gonna apologize.
Spinner:
Just tell me, what you told them.
Chantay:
All of it? That could take a while, because Jane had a lot to say about your crazy love making session. Although, I don´t really know if I´d call what you did love making.
Spinner leans against the locker next to hers, as he tries to grasp it all.
Chantay:
She said that you were amazing. According to her and I quote "It was the best first time, any girl could have asked for". I´d be happy with that review.
Spinner:
That was her first time? Oh, God!
Chantay:
It´s the first of many. Stay sober next time and your karma is re-aligned!
Spinner:
She thinks there´s gonna be a next time?
Chantay finishes her make-up and looks him in the eyes.
Chantay:
I wouldn´t be surprised, if she´s planning your wedding in her head right now. All those months longing for you and then for it to finally happen, when she had almost given up, that sort of thing usually only happens in movies. You´ve made her feel like the most special girl in the world. I hope that someday, I´ll get to try what it feels like. Although, I´ll probably need a real man like you for it, won´t I?
She leaves him to think about it.
Spinner:
How could you be this dumb?
He kicks a locker in frustration and hurts his foot in the process.
7. Montage.
We get a montage of Spinner´s school day, as he tries his best to hide from Jane and avoid being hit on by more girls. Jane sends him tons of texts, but he´s too scared to open them. Marco acts as his wingman, without whom, it wouldn´t be possible. Spinner is thankful to him.
8. Int. Boy´s Room. Day.
Marco is giving Spinner a peptalk.
Marco:
One final dash for the door and you´re home free.
Spinner:
I´ve never been this happy to have a Monday off from work!
Marco:
With that, I mean free until tomorrow, where you´ll have to do it all over again!
Spinner:
Why did I have to be so good at it?
Marco:
It´s not the worst skill to have, my friend.
Spinner:
The only problem is that I for the life of me, can´t remember what I did that was so great for her. It´s like it´s completely erased from my mind.
Marco:
Couldn´t you just ask her?
Spinner:
That´s a conversation, I´d rather avoid having. Wish me luck.
Marco:
Five bucks say she´s right outside the door.
Spinner:
Don´t even joke about that! Okay, you´re on.
Spinner leaves him, as Marco smiles to himself.
9. Int. Hallway. Day.
Spinner comes out from the bathroom and just as Marco predicted, there is Jane waiting for him. She smiles nervously at him.
Jane:
I saw you go in.
Marco comes out from behind Spinner.
Marco:
You can pay me tomorrow. Hi, Jane.
Him and Jane smile at each other, as he leaves them.
Jane:
I´ve been texting you, but you haven´t replied.
Spinner:
Jane, it´s complicated ...
Jane:
Was I bad? Is that it?
She starts to become upset and Spinner tries to console her without touching her.
Spinner:
No, you were great!
He gets a smile from her.
Jane:
I was? You´re not just saying that, aren´t you?
Spinner:
Of course not! You were the best! It´s my own performance, that I´m ashamed of!
Jane:
Oh, trust me, Mama Mason raised you well!
He can´t help being a little flattered.
Jane:
I know that we´re in a place where there´s a PDA code and I don´t want to get in trouble, but we could meet later at the Dot. Say, eight o´clock?
He clearly wants to say no to her, but just can´t bring himself to do it, seeing how happy she looks.
Spinner:
I´m looking forward to it.
She leans in to whisper in his ear.
Jane:
If last time wasn´t your best, I can´t wait to see what you´ve got up your sleeve! I´m going in with VERY HIGH expectations!
She gives him a small kiss on the cheek.
Jane:
Oops, my lips accidentally hit your cheek! I´m sorry.
She heads up the hallway and Spinner watches her leave, as he wonders what he´s gotten himself into.
10. Int. Spinner´s Room. Day/Rehab Facility. Day.
Spinner is lying on his bed, while talking on the phone with Jimmy, who´s still in rehab and is talking to Spinner on an old fashioned pay phone. We switch back ond forth between the two, as they speak. Jimmy looks very happy to get a chance to speak to him.
Jimmy:
What´s up, bro?
Spinner:
Your dad told me, they were letting you out.
Jimmy;
Next week, unless they change their minds. That way I can still graduate in time.
Spinner:
I´m glad for you.
Jimmy:
It´ll take me working my butt off, but you know I´m not afraid if that.
Spinner:
As long as you can sit on your butt doing it!
They laugh.
Spinner:
It´s time for that leg to heal up.
Jimmy:
Since when did you become a medical professional?
Spinner:
It´s funny you should say that. I have an, I don´t know if you could call it a medical problem, but it does involve the human body, so ...
Jimmy:
Don´t start telling me about something weird, you found on your junk!
Spinner:
Again, quite a relevant choice of words there. What I found on my junk was Jane and I have a date with her tonight.
Jimmy laughs a little.
Jimmy:
All that "she´s too young" and "it would be better to stay just friends with her"?
Spinner:
There´s more.
Jimmy:
This is where the question comes in, isn´t it? Okay, fire away.
Spinner:
From what I got from her, I wasn´t just good the first time, I was like a porn star dude good times a thousand!
Jimmy tries hard not to laugh.
Spinner:
It´s not funny.
Jimmy:
I´m not laughing. I swear.
He has to hold his mouth so as not to laugh.
Spinner:
Me being me, I somehow ended up telling her that the next time would be even better. What the hell do I do, man?
Jimmy:
Do the same things, you did the first time, only make them last longer.
Spinner:
I ... is that all there is to it?
Jimmy:
If she liked it the first time, she´ll like it again.
Spinner:
I guess that makes sense. If only I don´t have a clue what I did.
Jimmy:
You must have picked up some moves during those months with Amy.
Spinner:
Do you think they´ll work on Jane?
Jimmy:
Isn´t there only one way to find out?
Spinner nods in silent agreement.
Jimmy:
Or maybe you´d rather not do it with her?
Spinner:
On one hand, I could see us being perfect for each other, but on the other, there´s someone else, I´d rather be with. I don´t want to ruin my chances with her, if they haven´t already been by this mess.
Jimmy:
Let me guess. It´s that girl, who works the counter at Luigi´s pizza, that you´ve been saying is the hottest girl you´ve ever seen?
Spinner:
I don´t even know that girl. You know this one almost as well as I do, but let´s leave it at that. I can only handle one girl problem at a time.
Jimmy:
Let me know how it turned out. You hear plenty of great stories down here, but there´s nothing like news from home. Ya feelin´ me?
Spinner:
I´m feelin´ ya, bro. Later.
Spinner hangs up and picks up a mini basketball, he had by the side of his bed. We now see that there´s in an accordingly small hoop glued to his wall.
Spinner:
Make the shot, you do it with her.
He throws it and it misses by a wide margin.
Spinner:
Fate has spoken.
He starts contemplating how to break the bad news to Jane.
11. Int. The Dot. Evening.
Spinner comes in and the place is happening tonight. At one table we have Paige, Hazel, Ellie, Amy and Terri. At another is Mia, Chantay, Darcy and Jane. Jane sees him and runs over to him. She puts her arms around him.
Jane:
Hi, Honey. Wanna get out of here?
Spinner:
Jane, we need to talk. Can we go outside?
Jane:
Yeah, sure.
He doesn´t notice the other girls staring at them, as they leave.
12. Ext. The Dot. Evening.
Jane and Spinner come outside.
Spinner:
If I start rambling, just let me finish and then you can say something. I have to get this out now, or I don´t know if I will.
Jane:
I´m listening.
Spinner:
I can´t do it with you again, for many reasons. You´re really great, you´re one of the most awesome girls I´ve ever met, but there´s the age difference and we´re in a band together. Most of all, I like someone else more. It wouldn´t be fair on you, if I went in knowing that, because you deserve so much more. If nothing else a guy, who´s only crazy about you.
Jane smiles at him, to his surprise.
Jane:
Is that it?
Spinner:
I guess so. I was really drunk that night, Jane. I let it go too far and I´m so ashamed over it. If you never want to see me again, I totally understand.
Jane knocks on the window and he looks confused.
Spinner:
What was that for?
Jane:
I time that I came clean too, Spinner.
The girls who were in on the plan come out to join them. It´s basically all of those, who pretended to be in love with him.
Spinner:
What´s going on here?
Jane:
I needed a clear answer. Chantay was the one, who came up with the idea.
Chantay:
Don´t worry about your reputation, Spinner. I haven´t told anyone anything. I love my gossip, but I would never do that to Jane.
Hazel:
It was fun to see the look on your face, though.
Ellie:
Priceless.
Jane:
Not that there is anything to tell, besides us sleeping next to each other.
He looks very relieved.
Spinner:
We didn´t do anything? Thank, God!
Mia:
At least you know for sure now, huh Jane?
Jane:
Sorry, Spin. It´s not gonna happen.
Spinner:
I can live with that!
He takes a deep, calming breath.
13. Int. The Dot. Evening.
Spinner is sitting at the counter with Amy.
Spinner:
I wouldn´t have expected you to be a part of it.
Amy:
You can call it my farewell present. A thanks for all those months, where you were the best boyfriend in the world.
Spinner:
Until I started flirting with Jane.
Amy:
I was sure that you and her would hook up, the second we broke up.
Spinner:
Don´t you know me better than that?
Amy:
I should have. For what it´s worth, if I meet a guy like you in college, I´m not hesitating to ask him out.
Spinner looks happy for her.
Spinner:
You got in? Congratulations.
Amy:
Full scholarship and everything. It wouldn´t have been possible without your support. You made me believe in myself in way, that I´m not sure I could have imagined, before we started dating. Thanks.
Spinner:
It´s yourself, you should be thanking. All I did was nudge you in the right direction.
They smile at each other, as Paige comes up to them.
Paige:
So, Spin. What have you learned from all of this?
Spinner:
That I´d rather have Jane as a friend?
Amy:
That it´s really dumb to drink so much, that you can´t remember anything the day after!
Paige:
The best memories are the ones you can actually remember.
Spinner:
I´ll keep that in mind. I have to give it to you, you girls got me good!
Paige:
Marco was in on it too. He told me, that you owe him five bucks.
Spinner:
I´ll have to get him back some way.
Paige:
If you do, then I want in on it. Anyway, I gotta split. See you tomorrow.
Spinner:
See you, Paige.
Paige leaves the restaurant.
Amy:
So, if it´s not going to be Jane, then who is going to be?
Just as she says that, Terri comes up to them.
Terri:
I´m gonna leave with Paige. You´re not mad at me, are you?
Spinner:
Like there´s any way, I could get mad at you!
They smile at each other and linger on it just a little too long, which Amy quickly picks up on. She smiles to herself.
14. Int. Bus. Evening.
Jane and Mia are riding home on the bus.
Mia:
You´re not bummed at all?
Jane:
Not really. Two years doesn´t sound like a lot, but at our age ...
Mia:
It might as well be a lifetime.
Jane:
Plus, if we broke up, it´ll ruin way too many things for the both of us.
Mia:
It sounds like a clever, well thought out decision. Are you gonna go for it with Johnny DiMarco now?
Jane:
If I could only get him to cut off that mullet!
Mia giggles.
Mia:
He´s had it since grade 2. You could be in for a tough time.
Jane:
Maybe I should get him to grow out the rest in stead.
Mia:
Aren´t you afraid that he´ll hear about what you and Spinner didn´t do?
Jane:
I have it covered. Spinner once told me who to go to, if you need a scandal covered up at Degrassi.
Mia looks intrigued.
15. Int. Hallway. Day. (flashback)
Jane is talking to someone, who we can´t see.
Jane:
Spinner told me, that you´re the best.
Heather Sinclair (voice over):
He wasn´t lying. Got the cash?
Jane gets some money from her pocket and hands it to Heather.
Jane:
Do I need to do anything?
Heather Sinclair (voice over):
Just sit back and let me work my magic. This time tomorrow, your little escapade will be less talked about, than which of his four sweaters Simpson is wearing.
Jane:
Cool. I didn´t do anything with him, just so you know.
Heather Sinclair (voice over):
Like I´ve never heard that one before! Later, Jane.
Jane:
Later, Heather.
Jane smiles to herself and looks happy with how it all turned out.
CLOSING CREDITS
