WHAT IF - SEASON 2 EPISODE 44 - GONE TOO SOON

Disclaimer: I don´t own Degrassi or the characters from it.

Author´s Note: Welcome to the season finale! Are you excited? I would be, especially when I was told that it´s a double length episode! Sorry for making you wait a few extra days for it, but I decided at the last moment that the ending and some other scenes needed a re-write, which has ended up making the episode much better than it originally was, if you ask me.

The next chapter after this one will be another explanations chapter, before we move into season 3. Before we get ahead of ourselves though, let´s get on with the season finale!

1. Int. Spinner´s House. Evening.

It´s party time at Spinner´s house, as he´s celebrating the end of high school for him. It´s a nice little party with maybe 12 to 14 people there, including most of his friends. He´s looking a little drunk and holds up a beer with one hand, while he has his arm around a stunningly beautiful looking Terri.

Spinner:

Hey, everyone! Speech time!

Terri rolls her eyes at him, as people turn their attention to him.

Terri:

You´re really gonna do your speech? Honeybuns, I wouldn´t!

Spinner:

I just want to say, to all of you who have been with me and Terri through all these years, that it´s been a privilege knowing you guys. You´re a pretty great bunch of people, when push comes to shove.

Jimmy:

So are you, Spin.

Spinner:

Thanks, pal. But life must go on and in one way or another, we´re all done with high school here.

Jane, who´s standing next to Darcy, holds her hand up.

Jane:

I´m not. Just saying.

Darcy:

I still have two years left.

Spinner:

Those two excluded. It´s been a wild ride and I´m not sure, if I´d wanna do it again. Then again, I wouldn´t change anything, because it led me together with Terri at the end.

He gets a big aww from most of the girls there, as Terri nearly blushes.

Spinner:

I was a proud D student, but when it comes to love, I know how to make smart decisions. Which is why I´m asking her to move in with me.

He turns to Terri, who clearly wasn´t ready for the question and is speechless.

Spinner:

I love my mom, but 18 years of us living together is enough. I´m gonna move out no matter what, so what do you say?

Terri:

Yes! Of course, it´s yes!

They kiss, as their friends applaud them.

Paige and Marco look like two puppy dogs in love, as they watch them.

Marco:

Mental picture taken!

Paige:

Check! I´m so happy, that she got her storybook romance!

Marco:

If there´s a chance for her, then there could be a chance for us.

Heather Sinclair (off screen):

Fat chance!

They look up at Heather Sinclair, who we finally get to see in all of her glory. Well, glory is a perhaps not the right word, since she´s a kind of quirky looking girl, who´s only a little over five feet tall. She´s a snazzy dresser, though!

Heather:

Storybook love doesn´t really happen. We all know that!

Paige:

Heather, haven´t we discussed you never talking to me again? I thought, we agreed to it!

Heather:

I´m bored! Everyone here is so boring!

She sulks, as she crosses her arms.

Marco:

Maybe if you weren´t sucking the life out of the room, it would get better!

She sticks out her tongue at him.

Heather:

Why have you never liked me, Marco?

Marco:

Because there´s diseases I would rather set loose on the world, than you! Why are you still talking to us?

Paige;

How did you even get an invite?

Heather:

Who do you think stopped the rumors between Spinner and Jane?

Marco:

That was you?

Heather:

He knew to go to the best. No one knows how to replace one scandal with another better than me.

Paige:

It´s great that you´re proud of your mass manipulation skills, Heather! Now go and bug some other people!

Heather:

I can´t. I need a date to prom. Wanna go. Marco?

Both Paige and Marco start laughing.

Paige:

If you´re practicing a comedy act, it´s coming along!

Marco:

I wouldn´t drink any more tonight, if I were you!

Heather:

I´ll pay you 200.

They stop laughing, as he sees that she´s serious.

Heather:

Is that not enough? 300, but that´s as high as I´ll go.

Paige:

Hon, ... I can´t believe, I just called Heather Sinclair hon! Heather, you do know that he prefers men, don´t you?

Heather:

Why do you think, he´s my number one choice? Despite your meanness, you´re handsome, someone I could show off to my family, which I can´t say about 99.9 percent of the boys at Degrassi and I know that you won´t try any funny business, since I´m not interested in doing that sort of thing with you.

Marco and Paige look at each other in disbelief.

Heather:

Okay, 350, but I really can´t go any higher than that and I need an answer now. So?

Paige:

I can figure out something, if you want to go with her. It´s a lot of money. Again, it´s Heather Sinclair! How am I even saying these things?

She steps away from them to try to wrap her head around it, as Heather looks at him anxiously.

Heather:

Is it a date?

Marco:

I guess so.

She smiles and looks like, she´s already looking forward to it. He looks like, he´s dreading it.

OPENING CREDITS

2. Int. Hallway. Morning.

Ellie is lying on the floor, holding her stomach with laughter, not caring at all what people think of it. Marco looks embarrassed, that people are staring.

Ellie:

You can´t expect me to stop laughing! That´s the funniest thing, I´ve ever heard!

She tries to stop and catch her breath.

Ellie:

Oh, god! My stomach is starting to hurt, but I don´t care!

She goes back to laughing, as he helps her get up.

Ellie:

I couldn´t even think of a movie with that plot! You and the devil herself, going to the prom together!

Marco:

With what I´ve already saved up, that money can go to the down payment on a car. If one night and by that I hope no more than four hours in the company of that piece of hell spawn will get me some wheels, I can do it! Plus, she´s paying for the tickets, so I can afford a six pack too, in case the night is a complete disaster!

Ellie giggles, but looks like she´s got her laughing under control. It definitely stops though, when Heather approaches them. Her and Ellie clearly don´t like each other at all.

Heather:

Get lost, Ellie. Business talk.

Ellie:

With pleasure!

They give each other the evil eye, as they pass each other.

Marco:

You get ten seconds.

Heather:

Do you wanna get paid?

Marco:

Yes.

Heather:

Then you´ll shut up and listen. The evening will begin at 4 o´clock, where you´ll be picked up in a limo from your parents´ house. Unless you would like it to be somewhere else, of course.

Marco:

No, that´s fine! I was kind of hoping, that we´d just go to the dance, though.

Heather:

What do you think this is, Heather´s free giveaway? You´ll be working for your money. Understood?

Marco is looking more and more like he wants to back out of it.

Marco:

Yes, Heather. I understand.

Heather:

Your suit doesn´t have to be flashy, but then again that´s another reason why I picked a homosexual. You know how to dress yourselves properly. From there, we will be joining a small graduation party for my cousin Hermione. I hate her and you´re there to help me shut her up. After that, we´ll go to prom, where I will expect a good amount of dancing, but allow you to leave at ten o´clock, should you choose to.

Marco:

That´s it?

Heather:

Six hours from start to finish. When the clock hits ten, I´ll hand you your money and you´ll never have to see me again.

Marco takes one final chance to reconsider it.

Marco:

Don´t make me regret it anymore, than I already do!

She looks pleased.

Heather:

Great. See you tomorrow, Marco.

She leaves him and he tries to take in, what he´s gotten himself into.

Marco (to himself):

Mental note: Keep enough money for two six packs.

He looks up the hallway at Heather walking away and shakes his head to himself.

3. Int. Marco´s Room. Day.

Marco, Spinner and Jimmy are fully dressed for prom and look like three pretty handsome guys.

Spinner:

Can you believe, that we´ve made it to senior prom?

Jimmy:

You´re only there as Terri´s guest.

Craig comes in, with his tie still undone.

Craig:

Spinner deserves it as much as anyone! Says the guy, who´s only there as Paige´s guest.

Jimmy:

I´m taking my ex. How is that any better?

Spinner:

Why aren´t you taking Liberty again?

Jimmy:

I already took her to her Junior prom. She thinks that going to two right after each other would leave her "Prommed Out", but It´s cool. This way I get concentrate on having fun with you guys.

Craig:

Marco, fashion emergency!

Marco gets to work helping his hapless friend.

Marco:

Don´t you have your own prom to get to?

Craig:

I don´t really do ... the whole school thing anymore. I mean, I did in the beginning, but it was a hassle having to tour with a teacher, so we dropped it. I mostly do on-line courses.

Spinner:

You´re basically like me. A working man.

Craig:

That´s the word for it! Thanks for fixing my tie and bailing on her, Marco.

Marco:

You´re welcome. How long until it´s four?

Spinner looks at his watch.

Spinner:

Three minutes.

Marco:

I´d better get outside.

Craig:

We´d better get going, if were gonna meet up with the others.

Marco:

The pre-party you´re going to sounds a lot more exciting than whatever meeting of the demons, I´m in for!

All three of them put their arms around him and give him a group hug.

Craig:

Bye, Marco.

Spinner:

It was nice knowing ya!

Jimmy:

You had a good run, buddy!

He breaks free and leaves, as they get ready to follow after him, still laughing.

4. Ext. Marco´s House. Day.

Marco is waiting outside with his parents and his friends. They all look impressed, when a stretched white limo of the absolute most expensive kind comes driving towards them.

Marco´s Mom:

I don´t think one of those has ever driven on these streets before!

Marco´s Dad:

How rich is this girl´s parents, exactly?

Marco:

No one at school knows.

Spinner:

To find out, they´d have to talk to her.

Marco´s Mom:

Does she have a brother?

Marco and all of the others eye her.

Marco´s Mom:

It couldn´t hurt to ask!

The limo pulls up to the side of the road and a driver gets out from the driver´s side. He walks all the way around to open the door for Heather, who gets out, looking like a million bucks. The boys are a little taken aback by the sight.

Craig:

Hi, how are you doing? What am I thinking, it´s Heather Sinclair!

Heather:

Nice to see you again, Craig. Written any more pop songs about girl´s underwear lately?

Craig:

I thought that it had been too long, but I guess it hadn´t, Heather. You know why? Because with you, it can never be too long!

Heather:

We like shoes too, you know. Say, here´s an idea. Next time you could write one, where you do a girl, who wearing a pair of pumps! After that it could be a coat and maybe a sweater, if you´re feeling adventurous.

Marco sees the need to intervene.

Marco:

Can we get going?

Marco´s Mom:

Just one picture, Marco. Please.

He looks like he doesn´t want to, but Heather comes over and poses with him for his mom´s picture. He manages to fake a smile to keep his parents happy.

Heather:

Can I see the picture?

Marco´s mom hands her the camera and Heather doesn´t look satisfied.

Heather:

No one must ever see that picture!

She hands the camera back to Marco´s mom and rejoins Marco, taking his hand.

Heather:

That was beyond terrible! Try this time!

Marco:

Yes, Heather.

Heather:

Ready when you are, mrs. Del Rossi.

They pose, as Marco´s mom takes the picture. It´s no doubt a vast improvement over the last one. His parents are kind of stunned by Heather´s behavior, though.

Heather:

Let´s roll. We´re on a tight schedule.

Marco:

Yes, Heather.

He follows her into the limo and it drives off.

Marco´s Dad:

I can see why she´s single!

The boys nod in agreement.

5. Int. Limo. Day.

The limo is driving and she pours them a glass of champagne.

Heather:

It´s non-alcoholic, so don´t get too excited. Not that getting drunk wouldn´t make it easier, but it would make it harder to put on a convincing show.

Marco:

What kind of show?

Heather:

How many dates do you think I´ve been on?

She hands the glass to him and he looks a little confused.

Marco:

I don´t know what the norm is.

Heather:

It´s more than zero, I can tell you that much.

Marco suddenly feels a little sorry for her.

Marco:

You´ve never been on a date? But, the stories ...

Heather:

Were started by myself to hide the sad fact, that the boys liked me as little, as I liked them.

Marco:

Are you saying, it´s to hide that you´re gay?

Heather:

I´m very much on the fence about it. Boys are just too gross sometimes! Mostly it´s so they don´t think I´m some total loser, who never does anything.

Marco smiles to himself and is suddenly enjoying himself a little. She notices his smile.

Heather:

A real smile. I was hoping for it, but I wasn´t expecting it.

Marco:

Tell me about Hermione.

Heather:

Urgh, I guess we have to! I´ve told her for years about my hot latino boyfriend and for all of that time, I´ve managed to find excuses for her not to meet him.

Marco:

He doesn´t exist?

Heather:

Not in reality and I´ll be completely humiliated, if you don´t do a good job pretending to like me. After this, I can tell her that I dumped you and start fresh. Otherwise she will forever refer to you as my made-up first boyfriend and since I´m sadly forced to see her regularly, that would royally suck.

Marco:

I´ll try my best.

She smiles at him.

Heather:

Thanks. I know that I´ve already named a few reasons, why I chose you, but I didn´t name the most important one. That, despite everything you´ve called me over the years, I always pictured you as a nice and decent guy.

Marco:

Hey, you´ve called me things too!

Heather:

Wouldn´t High School have been much less fun without us bickering?

Marco:

Is that why you´re so hostile to everyone?

Heather:

No, usually it´s because I can´t stand them!

He takes a sip and smiles back at her.

6. Ext. Garden Party. Day.

The "other" pre-party is hosted by Paige´s parents, who are throwing a barbecue for her and her friends to celebrate their graduation.

Craig is busy talking to Ellie, who looks very interested.

Craig:

It´s exciting! Every day is like a new adventure!

Ellie:

What kind of big arenas have you played?

Craig:

Well, it´s still mostly coffee shops and places like that, but I played some huge arenas on the Barenaked Ladies tour!

Ellie:

So, mister rock star! What´s next?

He smiles at her flattering words.

Craig:

A top 10 single hopefully? I´ve been writing some really good songs lately.

Ellie:

That´s awesome. It´s so great, that you´re living out your dream.

Jay comes up behind her and hugs her.

Jay:

Did you know that Ellie had a crush on you, when she first saw you?

Ellie gets embarrassed, as Craig smiles widely.

Ellie:

I can´t believe, you just told him that!

Craig:

I´m flattered, Ellie. Really.

Ellie:

It was long ago.

Jay:

Aren´t you just a little miffed, that you could have had this, Craig?

Ellie:

Jay, I might have to leave you at home tonight!

Craig:

No, I´m not. Because she clearly found something better.

Him and Ellie smile at each other and he fist bumps with Jay.

Craig:

Just make sure you take good care of her. She´s a jewel, that one.

Jay:

You don´t need to tell me.

Craig:

I need to use the head, but I´ll find you again later.

He leaves them and heads into the house. Before he does, he takes one last look back at Ellie, who´s looking so happily in love with Jay that´s it´s almost infectious on him and sighs to himself.

7. Int. Bathroom. Day.

Craig locks the bathroom door and takes a small baggie with two small pills from his jacket pocket and puts one on the sink. He then changes his mind and takes out the other one too, before putting them in his mouth and swallowing it down with tap water. It looks like it helped a little and he takes another huge drink of water.

8. Int. Fancy House. Day.

Hermione Sinclair, an 18 year old doll of a girl, is enjoying her graduation party with plenty of her friends and family there. One of them, who we recognize is Holly J. Heather and Marco come in, holding hands.

Marco:

Is that her?

Heather:

My complete opposite.

Marco:

She´s nice? Sorry, force of habit!

Heather:

Everyone loves her. Well, maybe not everyone, but she has had seven boyfriends, has 493 Face Range friends, she´s been student body president at Western two years in a row and my mom has wished for years, that she´d given birth to her in stead of me.

Marco:

What´s she really like?

Heather:

A complete and utter bitch!

Marco:

Why did I even ask?

Heather:

Follow my lead and you´ll do fine.

They head over to Hermione and Holly J, who´s finding something very funny.

Holly J:

Stop it, Hermione!

Hermione:

Seriously, I think that she´s becoming flatter!

They see Heather with Marco and Holly J´s mouth drops, while Hermione plays it much more cool.

Heather:

Hermione, Holly J, let me finally introduce you to Marco.

Holly J:

Way to go, Heather!

Heather smiles at Holly J´s reaction, as her and Hermione stare each other down.

Hermione:

How did you meet, Marco? Since it´s one of the only interesting things that´s ever happened to Heather, she´s told the story countless times.

Marco:

Dance class, when the teacher paired us up to dance the Marimba. I knew right away.

Hermione:

He´s got that part memorized.

Heather:

Give it up, Hermione! You wanted proof and I got it for you.

Hermione:

I still don´t believe it. You´re too bland and ugly to get someone like him.

The girls continue staring each other down, as Holly J gets an idea.

Holly J:

They could kiss! Like in that old song "If you wanna know, if he loves you so, it´s in his kiss".

Hermione:

Great idea, Holly J. You´ll be a real asset to Degrassi next year.

Marco:

You´ll like it!

Holly J:

I think so too!

The two of them smile at each other, as Heather turns to Marco, trying to hide her massive nerves. She whispers in his ear.

Heather (whispering):

You don´t have to. I can´t expect that from you.

Marco (whispering):

Why don´t you shut up and kiss me, so we can give this bitch something to cry over?

She clearly likes his answer a lot and she kisses him. He does a pretty good job of appearing convincing, while she clearly doesn´t want it to end. People there smile and some snicker at the sight of it.

Hermione:

Fine. You can have your measly little win, Heather!

Heather stops kissing Marco, who has to take a moment to compose himself afterwards. She looks triumphant.

Heather:

Now you know that I never lie!

Hermione:

As if you don´t lie about everything else! Having a boyfriend doesn´t change, that you don´t have any friends!

Marco:

She has plenty of friends!

Hermione:

Why is she alone in her room every day after school and all of every weekend then? Her mom and mine talk every day and they worry a lot about her.

Heather´s strong demeanor starts to fade, now that she´s being humiliated after all. Hermione looks down on her, all high and mighty looking compared to little Heather.

Hermione:

Take that little incident, where you went crazy and cut up your clothes with a kitchen knife. Does he even know, that you see a shrink twice a week and your mom watches your eat dinner every night, to make sure that you eat enough?

Holly J sees that this is getting out of hand and tries to stop Hermione, since Marco doesn´t know how to react.

Holly J:

Come on, Hermione. That stuff´s personal.

Hermione:

As her boyfriend, shouldn´t he be told these things, so he knows what kind of pathetic girl, he´s getting himself involved with?

Heather:

You don´t know anything!

Marco sees that this is tough for Heather and puts his arm around her, while Hermione snickers at the reaction she got out of her.

Marco:

Let´s try that catering. I´m a sucker for deviled eggs.

Hermione:

She didn´t know that about you? How unsurprising!

Heather:

Shut up, Hermione!

Marco drags her over to the buffet table, as she tries hard not to cry.

Heather:

I´d been planning how that would go for months and it never went like that!

Marco:

At least your younger cousin seemed nice.

Heather:

She hasn´t been spoiled yet by the toxicity, that is our family. Not that she´s not well on her way.

Marco:

Try eating something to calm down. The shrimp looks delicious.

Heather:

It´s not too fattening either, I guess.

He picks one out for her, breaks off the tail and feeds the body to her. It makes her smile a little.

Heather:

Sorry, but I´ve always dreamed of having a guy feeding me something in a romantic way.

Marco:

You really haven´t tried anything, have you?

Heather:

I´ve tried kissing ... now.

It takes a second for it to sink in with him.

Marco:

We just had your first kiss?

Heather:

I wasn´t expecting that for my 350!

She smiles at him, as he takes it in.

Marco:

Was it what you expected?

Heather:

It was nice. I´m pretty sure that I like guys after all.

Marco:

I´m glad, I could help! I can´t believe, I´m saying this, but I´m sort of enjoying myself. Why aren´t you like this all the time?

Heather:

Not a bitch?

Marco:

If you want to be blunt about it!

Heather:

People annoy me really easily and when they do, I can´t help speaking up. I haven´t had anyone I could call my friend, since I was five and it makes me bitter, when I see them laughing and making plans to hang out together, when no one wants to do that with me. I tried to make friends my first days at Degrassi, I really did, but girls like Paige and Hazel had already made their minds up about me and spread the word to the other girls, that I was a bitch. When they all decided to reject me, I decided to give them the bitch, they all apparently wanted. In time, I gave up on them, like they gave up on me.

Now he really feels sorry for her and how he´s treated her.

Marco:

I never took the time to give you a chance either, did I?

Heather:

Don´t blame yourself. It´s not like anyone else did.

Marco:

Paige and Hazel are both different now. If you told them, the way you just told me, I´m sure they´d apologize.

Heather:

Is it okay with you, if we stop by my parent´s house on the way, so they can meet you?

Marco:

That´s the first time today, you´re not giving me an order to follow. Of course, we can.

She smiles and looks cheered up.

9. Int. House. Evening.

Everyone is getting ready to leave for prom and Paige is hugging her mom goodnight.

Paige (whispering):

Thanks for not fighting in front of them.

Paige´s Mom (whispering):

This is your night. I wouldn´t dream of doing anything to ruin it for you, like I know, I do so often.

They break the hug and smile at each other, as Craig comes over to them. He´s looking a little more confident now.

Craig:

Are you ready to go, my beautiful date?

Paige´s Dad:

I think, you have a flatterer there, Paige.

Paige´s Mom:

Have you two ever considered it? You make a cute couple.

Paige and Craig look at each other and almost have to laugh.

Paige:

Me and Craig? That sounds like something better suited for fan fiction!

Paige´s Mom:

Why not? What do you do, Craig?

Craig:

I´m trying to make it as a full time musician.

Paige´s Dad:

In that case, you dodged a bullet, Honey!

They laugh, as Ashley and Alex come over to them.

Ashley:

Are we hitting the road?

Paige:

I believe, we are!

Paige´s Mom:

Have a great evening, kids. I hope that you have as much fun at your prom, as I did at mine.

Paige rolls her eyes at them.

Paige:

We´re not kids anymore, mom!

Paige´s Dad:

You still are to us.

Paige smiles at them, as they leave them.

Paige:

You guys go outside. I´ll join you in a moment.

Alex:

Cool. Later, biaches!

Ashley and Alex head outside with the others.

Paige:

You can join them. It´s just that I have to put these boots on and they have tons of laces and stuff.

Craig:

I can help with it. As your date, wouldn´t you say it´s the least, I can do?

Paige:

Aren´t you the gentleman tonight? Thank you, Marco, for cancelling on me!

They smile at each other, as she gets the boots out and sits down. He takes her other shoes off and puts the boots on him. They do look really nice (and quite expensive), but not really practical.

Craig:

You´re gonna end up getting sore feet.

Paige:

I can worry about those tomorrow, as I keep them soaked in nice, warm water with some bath salts. Tonight, I want to look and feel like everything is perfect and this last year has been one long cake walk!

Craig:

I take it, that it hasn´t?

Paige:

Breaking up with JT was one the dumbest decisions, this dumb girl has ever made. Before I knew it, he was off in happy land with Manny, while I was spending my evenings at home with my mom. How sad is that?

Craig:

As sad as when the worst song you´ve written is the only one, people want to hear? A song, that you wish you´d never written and would do almost anything to never have to play again.

She smiles warmly at him.

Paige:

You´re not the first one to think that way about their big hit.

Craig:

It´s not even a hit. It´s a ... stupid novelty song, that goes in one ear and out the other. I have good songs too, it´s just that no one wants to hear them.

Paige:

The plight of the sensitive artist.

Craig:

If I could change one moment in my life, it would be to let the idea lie, when I first came up with it. Everything would have so much better now, if I had.

He gets sentimental and completely stops working, as he becomes lost in thought. Paige takes over for him.

Paige:

Do you miss her?

Craig:

I have a picture of us with Joey, Caitlin, Julia and Angie, we took the day before I left for the Barenaked Ladies tour. I look so happy in that picture and I remember feeling that way too. Like my world for that one moment was as perfect, as it could be. When I look at that picture every night, before I go to sleep, I wonder what on earth I was thinking to give all of that up. I don´t just miss her, I miss everyone at that house and you guys. I even miss going to school.

Paige:

Degrassi will still be there next year. Just saying.

Craig:

If only it were that easy.

She finishes her boots and stands up, before posing them for him.

Paige:

Are they the cherry on the sundae or what?

Craig:

Absolutely. I´m proud to call you my prom date, even though I don´t think I would have believed you, if you´d told me a few years ago.

Paige:

Me neither, but hey, things change. I hope those are dancing shoes, because I intend to have a blast tonight!

Craig:

You know what, Paige?

He looks her in the eyes and smiles at her.

Paige:

What?

Craig:

I think, you could be just the antidote for my blues, I so desperately needed.

Paige:

Does that make me Lady Gaga?

They laugh a little and leave together.

10. Ext. Sinclair Residence. Evening.

Marco and Heather come out of the limo, in front of her parent´s very expensive looking house. Marco looks impressed.

Marco:

If your family is this rich, why don´t you go to a fancy private school?

Heather:

Can you keep a secret?

Marco:

As far as I´m concerned, everything you tell me and I see tonight is in the strictest of confidence. You won´t have to worry about Paige or Hazel laughing over your misery later.

Heather:

Like they do all the time, you mean?

Marco:

They´re really not like that anymore. I wish that I could make peace between you, before the night is over.

Heather:

You´d have better luck trying to swim to Europe. The truth is that were enjoying it while we can, until the bank takes it.

Marco:

Is it that bad?

Heather:

When you´re dealing with huge amounts of money, you also risk ending in huge debt, when things go wrong.

Marco:

Not to pry, but how much are we talking?

Heather:

Eight figures.

He takes a moment to calculate, then makes wide eyes.

Marco:

That´s over ten million dollars!

Heather:

When we moved in, I was just born and they had money like dirt. How things have changed. Truth is, that this date has been saved up to through the 25 dollar allowance, I get a week.

She takes his hand and smiles at him.

Heather:

Thanks for listening to me, Marco. It feels so nice to be telling this to someone, who´s at least pretending to be my friend, than to my shrink.

Marco:

As far as I´m concerned, we are friends now. I bet you discuss things like the "Clothes Incident" with her?

Heather:

That was when they told me, we have to move. Something in my head snapped and I went completely uncontrollable. It scared the hell out of my parents.

Marco:

All things considered, it´s understandable that you would act out.

She looks up at the house with a sad look on her face.

Heather:

This house has been the one constant in my life. I´m sure gonna miss it.

Marco:

How do you want me to act in front of your parents?

She looks him in the eyes and smiles at him.

Heather:

I thought we had silently agreed to stop acting for this one night.

Marco:

You still want me to pretend to be your boyfriend, don´t you?

Heather:

Let´s be honest, they wouldn´t buy it anyway. Hermione, even if she is a Harpy from hell, is also right that I wouldn´t stand a chance with a guy like you.

Marco:

If this had been the Heather, I´d met four years ago, when I first came to the school as a fresh new student, who didn´t know anyone there and I still thought I was straight ... I definitely would have considered asking you out.

She smiles at his answer.

Heather:

I have an idea. Kind of a wild one, if you knew me.

Marco:

What´s that?

Heather:

Telling my parents the truth for once.

He looks a little proud of her.

Marco:

That sounds like a wonderful idea.

They head inside.

11. Int. Foyer. Evening.

Marco and Heather are greeted by Janice, the 42 year old live-in housekeeper of the house, who´s excited to be seeing Heather with such a handsome date.

Janice:

You look radiating, Heather!

Heather:

Thanks. I think it might be the company, I´m keeping.

Marco:

To be honest, she´s the one, who´s pulling me up to her level.

Janice:

Oh, you´re so cute together! I hope you have a great night at prom.

Heather:

I have a feeling, that I will.

Janice:

I´ll go and tell your parents, that you´re here. They´ll be excited to meet him.

Janice leaves them, as Marco takes in his current situation.

Marco:

Is it you or me, who´s Cinderella at the ball, because I´m starting to have my doubts?

Heather:

Can´t it be both of us?

Marco:

I guess it can, since we´re making the rules. She seemed nice.

Heather:

Janice? Yeah, she is. I know that it´s a classic old timey rich girl cliche, that the maid is her only friend, but she´s been the closest thing, I´ve had to a friend these last years. Just between us, my parents probably wouldn´t have kept her on the payroll, if they didn´t think it would make me even more lonely, if she wasn´t here. Now they do, for as long as they can afford to.

Marco:

Heather, I promise you that after tonight, you will never have to be as lonely, as you have been, okay? I won´t have it!

She smiles at how sweet he´s being to her, but it begins to fade, when her parents join them. Richard and Hyacinth Sinclair (I´m really stretching it with H-names now, aren´t I?) are a well dressed couple, who clearly still believe in keeping up appearances and also look like two people who look way too different to be married to each other. He´s kind of homely looking, while she makes the queen of England look like Lindsay Lohan on a wild night out!

Richard:

We´re so glad you could come after all!

Hyacinth:

And you´ve managed to keep your dress free of stains! You finally did it!

Heather rolls her eyes at it and Marco can see, that she´s already a little embarrassed.

Heather:

Is there any embarrassing baby pictures you´d like to take out and show Marco, while we´re here?

Marco:

It´s such a pleasure to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair. Say, that´s a Cartier you´re wearing, isn´t it, Mrs. Sinclair?

Heather´s parents look a little impressed, that he would notice.

Hyacinth:

How could you tell?

Marco:

That hemline is a signature of theirs. I have a friend, who´s a fashion know it all and if you want to be in her company, then you´re bound to pick up something.

Richard:

For the first many years of our marriage, I would always give Hyacinth a new Cartier dress on our anniversary, so she could wear it for next year´s anniversary.

Marco:

That´s very romantic.

Hyacinth:

I just never liked wearing the same dress twice. It´s a pity that Heather is so freakishly small, or there would be a gold mine of gorgeous dresses for her to wear.

Heather:

I couldn´t even do that right, could I, mom? Growing was just too complicated for me!

Hyacinth:

There´s no need to get hostile, young lady! I´m sure there´s things you would be good at, you just haven´t found out what any of them are yet.

Marco is starting to see, why it´s impossible for Heather to talk to her mom and is relieved, when Richard decides to change the subject. Something, he´s surely a master at by now!

Richard:

Say, Marco. What do your parents do?

Marco:

My mom works in homecare and my dad is a plumber. He owns his own small company, that he´s been running for years now.

Richard:

She´s dating the son of a plumber, Hyacinth! What is he, Dusty Rhodes?

They all look at him like they don´t get the joke and he quickly loses his enthusiasm again.

Richard:

That reference was a little old for you young people, I get it.

Hyacinth:

I´m as old as you and I didn´t get it! The question is, can you provide for Heather?

Heather:

Mom, it´s only a date! Plus, Marco is gay.

They look surprised, as Marco eyes her for outing him in front of them.

Richard:

Why would you date someone, who´s gay?

Heather:

I´m paying him to take me. That´s right, your daughter is so pathetic, that she had to pay a guy to take her to prom!

Richard:

How much?

Marco:

350.

Richard:

Seems reasonable.

Heather:

Dad!

Hyacinth:

Heather, you should have told me. We could have hired someone much cheaper for you. The gardener´s son would have done it for a hundred, if we´d thrown in a breakfast Burrito.

Heather turns to Marco.

Heather:

Can you see now, why leaving my room is less preferable to a weekend trip, where you solely tour the poorest streets of Rio?

Richard:

Ha! Good one, Heather!

Hyacinth:

No, it wasn´t.

Marco:

Do you wanna go?

Heather:

Yes!

The two of them hurry out of there.

12. Int. Limo. Evening.

Heather is trying to calm down, while Marco finds it a little funny.

Marco:

I´ve met some characters, but those two ...

Heather:

Imagine what it´s like to live with them, if you think it´s so funny.

Marco:

Your dad seems nice enough.

Heather:

He took his last name from my mom. He´s not a Sinclair by blood, who´s cursed like the rest of us! Anyway, he gets plenty of help from Jack and Jim.

Marco:

Are they his friends?

Heather:

Last names "Daniels" and "Beam"?

Marco sees what she means and stops smiling.

Heather:

That´s what he calls it, when it becomes too much for him and he locks himself in his office until the next morning. Not that I blame him, considered who he´s married to. The really sad part is that they stay together, because both of them think it´s the way out of their money problems. Whatever happens, I hope I don´t end up in a loveless marriage like theirs.

He sees that she needs some physical comfort, so he moves over next to her and holds her.

Marco:

Want to know a sad truth about me? I have only been on three good dates in my life.

His change of subject makes her smile a little.

Heather:

Really? Only three?

Marco:

The first was my first date with Ellie. We went to an art gallery and I knew that I´d found a friend for life, when we both agreed that while Descartes was brilliant, he was too complex in his thinking compared to Kierkegaard, to be as eternally relevant.

Heather:

You lost me after the word date!

Marco:

The point is that it was the kind of nerdy talk, I never thought I would have with anyone. Then there´s my second date with Dylan. The first one was a nervous disaster, that probably would have made for a good sitcom episode, but wasn´t fun to live through! But the second one, nothing got in the way. We ate at a small restaurant, where I had the Gnocchi and he had the Pasta Primavera. Before then, it still felt like he was Paige´s older brother, but after that it felt like he was my possible future boyfriend. Does that make sense?

Heather:

I guess, it does. Sounds nice. It´s not a lot through in four years.

Marco:

You´re not the only one, who´s been going through a drought. Our kiss was my first in over a year.

Heather looks stunned.

Heather:

Is every other gay man deaf and blind in this city?

Marco:

Love is hard. Especially when you don´t mind sticking out from the norm, like we do.

Heather:

Are you sure, there´s not a tiny bit of straight left in you?

He smiles and shakes his head.

Marco:

No, sorry.

Heather:

You still haven´t told me, who your third good date was with.

Marco:

Is it really that hard to guess?

She looks flattered, something she clearly isn´t used to.

Heather:

This one?

Marco:

Absolutely, this one!

Heather:

Even though it´s all gone wrong?

Marco:

Has it? All I know is that I´m getting to know a girl, who I wish I´d taken the time to get to know, rather than hurl insults at.

Heather:

It´s okay. You´re far from the worst.

Marco:

No, but I still did it, when I should have tried talking to you. Now that I am, I´m finding someone that I want to be friends with. A girl, who just needs someone to give her a chance to show who she is, under that scary mask she puts on for the world.

She´s so happy, that she blushes a little.

Heather:

Are you saying, that I should try being the real me? What if they reject the real me, like they did last time?

Marco:

Then you´ll still have me to help you through it. Anyway, so what if the people at our prom don´t like you? Most of them, you´ll never have to see again after tonight. Outside these windows, there´s a whole world full of people, who will only judge you based on how you are to them, from the moment they met you.

Heather:

You can´t expect me not to say my opinion.

Marco:

Heather, try this. In stead of blurting it out, like you usually do, try saying it in your head first and ask yourself "Is it wise of me to say this right now?". It works for the rest of us.

Heather:

I suppose, I can try it.

Marco:

If you avoid embarrassing me, you can keep your money. I´ll even pay you back for my own ticket.

Heather;

Is that a promise?

Marco:

Cross my heart. You´ll like the results so much, that you´ll want to stay that way.

Heather nods.

Heather:

Deal!

Marco:

In that case, I say let´s party!

They smile at each other.

13. Ext. Degrassi. Evening.

Students dressed for the prom are coming up to the school and there´s nothing but good times in the air. Craig looks pretty hyped for it too, as he waits in line with his friends. Jay and Ellie are in line behind them.

Craig:

Who wants to party? This guy wants to party!

Paige:

See, I told you that it would be fun!

Ellie:

I heard that we get the same DJ, who did Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne´s wedding.

Jay:

Honey, we talked about that whole "not believing everything you hear" thing, didn´t we?

Craig:

I don´t care if all he plays is Randy Newman records in reverse all night long! This evening is gonna be epic!

His big smile starts to fade though, when he notices one of the other couples waiting in line. A guy, who doesn´t look all that different from himself and a pretty Asian girl, who´s carrying a small, but still noticeable baby bump. The two of them look very much in love. Paige notices his staring at them and looks at them too.

Paige:

Remind you of anyone?

Craig:

A dance like this was where it all started with me and Manny. No one else had noticed how beautiful she was, not even herself, but I sure did. The moment she smiled at me, I knew that there weren´t any other girls at that dance, I wanted to dance with.

Suddenly tears start to flow from him eyes and he gets embarrassed, so he tries to hide it.

Craig:

God, I´m pathetic. Here come the waterworks!

Paige gets a tissue from her purse and hands it to him.

Paige:

Here, Hon.

He takes it and wipes his eyes.

Craig:

How can I not be over her all these months later?

Paige:

How can I not be over her boyfriend all these months later? Trust me, it´s perfectly natural.

Jay:

It took me a good long while to get over Alex. If you want pathetic, you should have seen some of my attempts at winning her back.

Ellie:

I wish, I could tell you, that I´ve tried it, but I haven´t.

Jay kisses her hair, to her delight.

Jay:

And you never will, because I don´t plan on ever letting you go!

Ellie smiles, but Craig has to fight crying again.

Craig:

I´m sorry. You´re just so perfect for each other!

Ellie:

I can´t disagree with you there!

Paige:

You´ll find love again too, Craig.

Craig:

I won´t. Not like I had with Manny.

Paige:

Have you considered that it could be even better next time?

Ellie:

They don´t always have to start with you getting the girl pregnant.

She smiles warmly at him and it cheers him up a little.

Jay:

It´ll happen when you least expect it. If it can happen for me, it can surely happen for you.

He looks a little comforted by their words.

14. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.

The Senior Prom at Degrassi looks to be where it´s happening tonight! Gwen Stefani´s "Hollaback Girl" is pumping from the speakers, people are dancing and there´s mostly smiles all round. The chaperones are busy too, since some of the young couples are having a little too much trouble keeping their hands, where they should be! Ashley, Amy and Alex are trying their hardest not to laugh at one couple in particular, who look to be in a contest to see, who can grab the other one´s bum the tightest. They eventually have to give in.

We see Marco and Heather arriving and Heather is soaking up that she for the first time in her life is the one who´s getting jealous looks from other girls, not the other way around.

We see Ellie and Jay are talking. They stop though, when Marco and Heather come over to them. You can almost see how Ellie becomes icy with the flick of a switch.

Marco:

Great party, huh guys?

Ellie:

It was.

Jay:

Heather Sinclair. I can´t wait to hear what insults you have lined up for me. Come on, gimme your best one.

Heather:

You two make a really cute couple.

Ellie and Jay look at each other like "huh?"

Ellie/Jay:

What?

Heather:

I mean it.

Ellie:

Marco, what´s she doing?

Marco:

She trying a new approach called being nice.

Heather:

Ellie, I know that we´ve never liked each other and I still kind of think you have a stick up your butt ...

Marco gives her a nudge with his elbow.

Marco:

Think before you speak.

Heather:

I´m trying! The nice thing I was gonna say, is that it´s cool that a guy and a girl, who are as completely different as you are, have the guts to say "to hell with it" and go for it anyway. There´s something kind of beautiful about it, if you ask me.

Both Jay and Ellie are stiil trying their best to take in how nice Heather is being.

Ellie:

Thanks?

Jay:

You two haven´t been doing any kind of drugs, have you?

Marco and Heather smile at each other.

Marco:

The only drug involved has been a dose of reality.

Heather:

Marco has helped me see, that the only one I was hurting by being bitter and mean was myself. If you´ll excuse me, I think my make-up could use a touch up, before the dancing starts.

Marco:

I´ll wait right here.

Heather leaves them and Ellie puts her hand up to Marco´s forehead to feel.

Ellie:

You don´t have a fever, so it´s probably not delirium.

He wafts her hand away.

Marco:

Stop it!

Jay:

That I didn´t expect!

Ellie:

There is a "We Hate Heather Sinclair Club" here, of which you are one of the founding members!

Marco:

I´m cancelling my membership, effective immediately and so should you. Once I got past the layers of gristle and grime, I found a girl who might as well have been you. Deep down, you´re kind of the same actually.

Ellie can´t believe what she´s hearing.

Ellie:

Me and Heather Sinclair?

Marco:

She´s had it tough these past years. If I had her family, I would change my name and move to the deepest part of some jungle, just so I´d never have to see them again! Her school life has been even worse and what we saw as joking and banter, was bullying to her.

Jay:

Ellie, a bully? What drugs are you on, seriously?

Ellie:

God, I think have been a bully to her. I´ve said some really mean things to her, things I would never say to anyone else. In my head it was okay, because it was Heather Sinclair.

Marco:

The scapegoat, everyone could take out their frustrations on.

Jay:

I did something nice for her once.

Marco and Ellie both stare at him in disbelief.

Ellie:

What did you do?

Jay:

I didn´t steal her purse. It was hanging on the edge of her chair and her back was turned. I could have taken it, but the nice guy in me decided not to. I was actually a little proud of myself. It had to suck for the two other kids I robbed to cover my losses, though.

Marco and Ellie try to take his answer in.

15. Int. Girl´s Room. Evening.

Hazel and Paige are in there, along with a couple of other girls, who are on their way out.

Hazel:

If you had told me back when we started grade 9, that we would both have platonic prom dates, I probably would have wanted to throw myself off a bridge!

Paige:

This was supposed to be my one last evening with my uber sexy artist boyfriend, before I moved on to college and found a rich guy, who spent all the money on me, that the poor artist could ever afford to.

Hazel:

My dream was to be discovered on the street, become a hot shot teen model and bring my celebrity boyfriend here, while the press waited outside for us.

They both laugh.

Paige:

We were such a pair of spazzes, weren´t we?

Hazel:

If nothing else, we had high enough thoughts of ourselves!

Paige:

Aren´t you glad that we had the chance to grow up here, so we turned out to be a pair of halfway decent girls?

Hazel:

Absolutely. I´m gonna miss you.

Paige:

Not half as much, as I´ll miss you. I mean who else is gonna volunteer to be my filter, that I let every thought I have pass through?

Hazel:

It´s a labor of love, Paige. Someone else will think so too.

They smile at each other, but their smiles fade, when Heather comes in. She looks almost shell shocked to be facing them like this.

Hazel:

If it isn´t the harpy herself!

Heather:

Look, you guys ...

Paige:

You´ve really hit a new low for being pathetic tonight, Heather.

Hazel:

I always had a feeling, that all of those stories about you with guys were made up.

Paige:

Especially since no one was able to verity it.

Heather looks a little shocked.

Heather:

You´ve been keeping tabs on me all of this time?

Hazel:

Why do you think no guys ever asked you out? It´s not like you´re ugly or anything.

Paige now is looking shocked too.

Paige:

I didn´t have anything to do with sabotaging your love life.

Hazel:

No, that was all me.

Heather tries her best to fight the tears, as Paige starts to distance herself from Hazel.

Heather:

Why? What did I ever do to you?

Hazel:

Like you don´t remember? Grade 5, when I´d just come here and you made fun of me for no good reason, except that I was new in class?

Heather:

I don´t! I was just a kid.

Paige:

Hazel, that´s seriously messed up!

Heather:

I´m sorry, okay? You didn´t have to ruin my life to prove your point!

Heather storms out of there looking upset, while Paige looks at Hazel in disbelief. Hazel looks kind of disappointed.

Paige:

What the hell?

Hazel:

I didn´t think, she would apologize like that.

Paige:

It never occurred to you to ask?

Hazel:

It was easier to go on hating her.

Paige:

She´s not the one, who needs to apologize. You are.

Hazel:

To her? Haven´t we always agreed that we hate her?

Paige:

For fun! Not to ruin the poor girl´s life!

Hazel sees that she probably went way over the line.

16. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.

Heather comes storming through the gymnasium, doing her best not to break down in tears. Marco comes to meet her.

Marco:

Are you ready to start shaking it?

He sees that she´s upset and looks concerned for her.

Marco:

What happened?

Heather:

Hazel. Apparently ruining my life has been her favorite pass time since grade 5.

Marco:

I´m sure, that isn´t true.

Heather:

Why did she tell me to my face just now then? I´m sorry, Marco. I thought that I could pretend to be someone else, but the fact is that everyone hates me here and you´re the only one, who wants me here.

Marco:

Don´t let her ruin your evening.

Heather gets the money for him from her purse and tries handing it to him.

Heather:

Take it. Your job is done.

Marco:

I can´t. Not now, after today.

She smiles sadly at him.

Heather:

You´re an alright guy, Marco Del Rossi. I only wish there had been more guys like you here.

She gives him a small hug and heads for the entrance.

17. Ext. Degrassi. Evening.

Heather comes out from the school and heads down the stairs. She looks around for a possible ride home and sees Craig standing by himself, looking melancholic. She takes a moment to consider it, before walking over to him.

Heather:

Shouldn´t you be in there dancing?

He turns his head and smiles sadly at her.

Craig:

Being in there only reminds me of everything I´ve done wrong, since I started here.

She smiles sadly back at him.

Heather:

Now, there´s a sentiment, I can sympathize with!

Craig:

Did you destroy your entire life?

Heather:

My mind perhaps.

Craig:

If you could, would you go back to your first day here and just change everything, knowing what you know now?

Heather:

Craig, if we could do that, where would the excitement in life be? Anyway, who says that things will turn out for the better?

Craig:

It occurred to me tonight, how much I gave up by leaving here. I got so nervous, that I did a double dose of my anxiety medication. I don´t know if this is the side effects, that I´m living through right now.

Heather:

If the side effect is you being nice for once, then by all means stick to the double dose!

He can´t help laughing a little, making her laugh along with him.

Craig:

Do you realize that this is the first time we´ve talked, where we didn´t start out with an insult?

Heather:

It´s nice for a change, don´t you think?

Craig:

Kind of, yes. So, you know why I´m out here. Why are you?

Heather:

I don´t feel like I belong with them.

Craig:

Hey, I haven´t even graduated! What do you say, that since we are here anyway, we go in a dance at least one dance?

Heather:

I don´t know ...

Craig:

Do you really want your prom memory to be that you left like this, just when the real fun is getting started?

He offers her his hand and she decides to take it.

Heather:

I guess not.

Craig leads her back inside.

18. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.

Marco is telling Hazel off, while Paige watches. Hazel knows that she deserves it.

Marco:

You couldn´t have kept it to yourself for a few more hours.

Hazel:

I thought, it would feel really satisfying.

Paige:

Did it, Hon?

Hazel:

Not now, it doesn´t.

Marco is relieved to see Heather coming back in, but is surprised to see her holding Craig´s hand.

Marco:

Ehm ...

Heather:

I found this poor guy outside. Hazel, I have something to say to you.

Hazel brazes herself for the worst.

Hazel:

Okay. I deserve it.

Heather:

Even though you´ve been a grade a bitch towards me, I choose to forgive you.

The rest look surprised and she smiles at Marco.

Heather:

If there´s one thing that today has taught me, it´s that this my chance to start fresh.

Marco looks proud of her.

Hazel:

Thanks.

Paige:

Wow, Heather. I don´t think I could be that forgiving!

Heather:

It´s prom. Why waste it on old enemies, when you can be enjoying it with new friends?

She leads Craig onto the dance floor. Marco offers his arm to Paige.

Marco:

It looks like we both got ditched, once again.

Paige:

Isn´t that the story of us in high school?

She takes his arm they follow after them, just as Jimmy comes up to Hazel.

Jimmy:

There you are! Are you ready to show them how it´s done one last time?

Hazel:

Jimmy, am I a bad person?

Jimmy:

If you had been, do you think we would have stayed this close for all of these years?

Hazel smiles at his nice words,

19. Montage - Music: "Photograph" by Nickelback

We get a montage of the prom as the song plays and the old friends hang out all together, for what they know might be the last time that they´ll be assembled like this.

Old friendships are even rekindled, as Craig also dances with Ashley, while Alex dances with Jay, until they´re interrupted by Ashley. Jay gladly lets her take his place and looks happy for Alex, that things turned out this way. He isn´t left alone for long though, as Ellie soon takes him hand and makes him dance with her. He smiles to himself, realizing that he too didn´t do too badly for himself.

We see Jimmy and Marco finally having the Michael Jackson style dance off, that they didn´t get to have in season 2, when Jimmy´s pants ripped. Both of them are great, but it´s clear that Jimmy is the winner. They fist bump on it afterwards.

We see Paige and Amy meeting on the dance floor and dancing a little together. They´re soon joined by Terri and Spinner and the four of them dance together,

We of course also see Marco and Heather dancing. He´s enjoying himself, but is even more enjoying watching her finally have one great evening of her life.

20. Ext. Degrassi. Evening.

The prom is ending and the attendees are leaving it. We cut to Craig, who´s with Heather and Marco.

Craig:

I heard about a wild after party, if you´re up for it.

Heather:

This has been a wild enough day as it is, without my first kegger to finish it off. Sorry, Craig.

Craig:

It´s cool. Marco?

Marco:

You know me. I´m never one to miss a party!

Craig:

Cool I gotta get the address from Jay and then I´ll be back, so don´t move. See ya, Heather.

Heather:

See ya, Craig.

He leaves them to find Jay, which he quickly does.

Marco:

I guess, that this is where our roads part for the evening.

Heather:

I didn´t in my wildest dreams imagine, that I would have this great a time! Thanks.

Marco:

You´re welcome. It looks like Craig likes you.

Heather:

Come on, Marco. A wanna be musician and high school drop out? I´m low on the totem pole, but not that low!

He smiles to himself.

Heather:

Plus and don´t tell him, but I can´t stand that song of his!

They laugh together.

Marco:

It does get on your nerves after the 50th time you´ve heard it, doesn´t it?

Heather:

You said it, not me. I suppose that´s it, as far as High School is concerned. So, tell me, Marco. Was it everything you hoped it would be?

Marco:

All of that and so much more!

He smiles to himself, as he thinks back on it.
