WHAT IF - SEASON 3 EPISODE 2 - CRUSH ON YOU
1. Int. The Dot. Day.
Anya is having some fries and a soda with Sav. She´s enjoying it, but his mind looks to be elsewhere.
Anya:
These are really good fries, don´t you think?
Sav:
Who do you think is hotter? The blonde by the counter or the black haired one over at that table?
Anya looks over at them and sees a pair of girls, who are much more classically pretty, than she is and it brings her down.
Anya:
I dunno. They´re both pretty, I guess.
Sav:
They´re not just pretty, they´re hot! They aren´t lying, when they say that Degrassi has the hottest girls in Toronto.
Anya:
Can we talk about something else? It´s the only think you´ve been talking about lately.
Sav:
Sorry, Anya.
Anya:
It´s just a constant reminder, that I´ll never get the kind of reactions from boys, girls like them do.
Sav smiles at her, trying to cheer her up.
Sav:
You have a ton of other qualities, that make up for it. If anyone was looking for the biggest heart of gold, they wouldn´t have to look further than you.
Anya:
I´m not girlfriend material, is that it?
Sav:
Give it time and they´ll see, what I see.
Anya:
A sad excuse for a girl, who still hasn´t been on date number one?
Sav:
The best kept secret at school. All you have to do is let them in.
She takes his kind words with a smile, as he gets distracted again.
Sav:
Check out the brunette, who just walked in!
Anya´s smile fades, thinking that she´ll probably never be seen by him, the way she wants him to see her.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Convenience Store. Morning.
A very tired looking JT is walking through the store with Toby.
JT:
I tell you, man. There just aren´t enough hours of the day.
Toby:
In the Star Wars universe, there´s planets that have 30 hour days or even longer.
JT:
You wouldn´t happen to have your X-Wing parked around the corner, so we can go there?
Toby laughs.
Toby:
I wish!
They reach a cooler and JT grabs himself an energy drink. They head for the counter.
JT:
Ah, my morning pick me up!
Toby:
You know that they aren´t good for you, don´t you?
JT:
You could say the same about lots of things. I´m not gonna give up eating chocolate, just because I would have fewer cavities.
Toby:
Chocolate isn´t addictive. Those drinks are and highly!
JT:
You clearly haven´t met my aunt Martha.
They reach the counter and JT hands the can to the cashier, who rings it in.
Cashier:
Our most loyal customer! You´re having your usual breakfast, I see.
JT:
It´s the breakfast of champions!
Toby (quietly to himself):
Or the oblivious.
JT doesn´t hear him and has already taken a big sip, before they´ve left the store.
3. Int. Foyer. Morning.
JT and Toby enter the school to see Manny helping out Emma with hanging up posters. It´s for an 80´s themed back to school dance. JT and Toby come over to them.
JT:
How did you land this sweet gig?
Emma:
My dad´s a teacher. Do I need to explain further?
Toby doesn´t look that into the idea behind the dance.
Toby:
An 80´s dance? Really?
Manny:
Haven´t you heard? The 80´s are in again!
Emma:
In the 80´s they were nostalgic for the 60´s, in the 90´s it was the 70´s and now it´s the 80´s that everyone loves.
JT:
Come on, Tobes. Get with the times!
Toby:
Can I skip forward a decade, so it´s the 90´s, that are in again?
JT:
The early 90´s for the most part still sucked, music wise. Unless you fancy an evening of rocking out to Michael Bolton, "Achy Breaky Heart" or that weird Madonna song, Lenny Kravitz wrote for her.
The girls finish and look over their work.
Manny:
It´s hanging straight enough.
JT gives her a hug from behind and gently kisses her neck. It makes her smile.
JT:
Do I have a date for the dance?
Manny:
Only since you asked nicely.
Emma:
Are you going with Kendra, Toby?
Toby:
I don´t think so. Me and her are kind of in a weird place.
Emma:
I´m dateless too. It´s hard enough to drag Sean to any school event and an 80´s dance is absolutely out of the question!
Manny:
Here´s a crazy thought. Why don´t we go together, all four of us?
JT:
It´d be okay with me.
Neither Toby or Emma look dismissive of the idea. Sav and Anya pass by them and notice the poster.
4. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Anya and Sav come up to Sav´s locker, which he opens.
Anya:
When are you picking me up?
Sav looks a little confused, making her frustrated with him.
Anya:
For the dance? We always go to these things together.
Sav:
I was thinking about finding a real date. You know, a romantic one or at least one, that could end up being it.
Again, she´s disappointed, that he doesn´t think of her "that way".
Anya:
If that´s what you want ...
Sav stops what he´s doing and smiles at her, trying to make it seem like a positive thing to her.
Sav:
We hang out nearly all the time at school, every weekend, every day after school and most days until it´s time for one of us to get home to bed. It´s only for one evening.
Anya:
Before I know it, you´ve found a girlfriend and I´ll be yesterday´s news.
Sav:
I would never and I repeat, NEVER take a girlfriend, who doesn´t accept us being close.
His words get a small smile out of her.
Sav:
You´re like a second sister to me, only unlike with Alli, we´re kind of the same. I couldn´t begin to imagine what my life would be like without you.
Anya:
You say that now, but ...
Sav:
Anya, you´re my best bro and I believe in bros before hoes.
Those weren´t the words she needed to hear, but she plays it off with a passive/aggressive smile that goes way over his head.
5. Int. Classroom. Morning.
JT comes in and takes a seat next to Danny (who´s sitting next to Derek on his other side), now that JT has been held back a year.
JT:
Morning, my man! What´s swinging?
Danny:
How can you be this calm?
JT:
Why shouldn´t I be? Life is great!
Derek:
Maybe it will be again, after we get this test over with!
JT´s smile quickly fades.
Danny:
I spent all of last night preparing and I still don´t feel ready.
JT:
I completely forgot.
Danny and Derek both stare at him.
Derek:
How can you forget that the first major test of the year is today?
JT:
It´s not the first time. I´ll wing it.
Danny:
I wish that I had your confidence!
JT:
You´re talking to a rare breed, the ultra-experienced high school slacker!
Danny:
You´re saying that, like it´s a good thing?
JT:
Years of doing as little as possible with minimum effort has taught those of us, who follow the grand path of laziness, how to get out of these situations with passing grades. It´s a grossly under rated artform, if you ask me!
Derek:
I hope so, for your sake.
Miss Kwan comes in carrying a large stack of papers and it makes JT gulp. It seems that all of his confidence was just for show.
6. Int. Cafeteria. Day.
JT is hanging his head with disgust in himself, while Manny tries to cheer him up.
JT:
Why didn´t I pay attention this time around either?
Manny:
It´s only one test.
JT:
I´m lucky, if I get a D. Statistically I should get at least one right, since all of my answers were complete guesses, shouldn´t I?
Manny:
Thank god for multiple choice tests, huh?
JT:
It wasn´t multiple choice.
Manny:
In that case, I think that your teacher will have a good laugh at some of your answers!
He lets his head fall down on the table and she strokes his hair to comfort him.
We cut to Anya, who´s sitting alone at a table, reading a book. She´s surprised, when Roxy comes over to her, holding a cup of coffee.
Roxy:
Mind if I sit with you?
Anya isn´t sure how to react.
Anya:
I guess not.
Roxy takes a seat and smiles warmly at her. It makes the shy Anya ease up a bit.
Roxy:
Catching up on some homework?
Anya holds up her book. It´s "Lord of the Flies".
Anya:
I´ve seen the movie, so it´s not very exciting.
Roxy:
I read it last year, so it´s still fresh in my memory.
Anya:
For school?
Roxy smiles at Anya´s innocence.
Roxy:
You really haven´t heard?
Anya:
No one tells me anything, except for my friend Sav. It´s like there´s the lowest of the low as far as being the shizzle around here and somewhere deep below them, there´s me!
Roxy laughs.
Roxy:
I used to feel that way at my old school, before I ran away from home.
Anya:
Was it that bad there?
Roxy:
It isn´t something, I like to think about. You´ll probably hear it from someone else, so you might as well hear it from me. I spent most of the last two years living on the street. Which is also why I´m still a Sophomore, in case you were wondering.
Anya can´t help being a little shocked.
Anya:
You were homeless?
Roxy:
That´s another way of putting it. Me and my friend Red were sort of saved from that life, you could say. We live in a group home now.
She takes a sip of her coffee, as Anya looks at her with sympathy.
Anya:
Sorry, but it´s the first time I´ve spoken to someone, who´s been homeless. It must have been terrible.
Roxy:
It´s no deluxe breakfast at the Hilton with a Spa day to follow, but it wasn´t like I was miserable all the time. When I read "Lord of the Flies", I was squatting with a pair of girls in a condemned apartment building. We only had the floor to sleep on and very little in the way of money, but we had tons of laughs and a roof over our heads for a while.
Anya smiles to herself at the thought of it.
Anya:
That sounds nice.
Roxy:
I´m still better off here. There´s less chance of the roof collapsing on top of me!
Anya giggles.
Roxy:
Except that I only know two people here and they´re both guys. I don´t mind listening to guy talk, but it gets kind of boring after a while. Which brings us to now and I saw you sitting here, so I thought why not? Believe it or not, but deciding to talk to you ranks very low on the list of the scariest decisions, I´ve had to make!
Anya looks happy to be making such an interesting new friend.
7. Int. Hallway. Day.
Anya and Roxy come walking down the hallway together, still getting to know each other.
Anya:
I´m as boring and average, as it´s possible to be. I´ve never had anything bad happen to me, all of my grandparents are healthy and I´m not ashamed to say that I love my parents to bits and they´ve done a great job raising me. I almost feel guilty for it now, hearing how sucky your life has been.
Roxy:
How about if in stead of you feeling guilty, I feel happy on your behalf? That way we both win!
Anya smiles at the suggestion.
Anya:
That sounds a lot better.
Roxy:
Living on the streets teaches you to look on the bright side of almost any situation. It beats feeling sorry for yourself.
Anya:
I can imagine.
She stops in her tracks, when she sees Sav talking to and flirting with Darcy. It looks to be working too, by the amount of smiling they´re doing and how unnaturally close they´re standing to each other. Now it´s Roxy, who looks at Anya with sympathy.
Roxy:
Stings, doesn´t it?
Anya:
He told me this morning, that he was planning on asking someone else. I figured that I had a few days to get used to the idea first.
Roxy:
Welcome to the world of having boys disappoint you. Here you told me, that you´ve never had anything bad happen to you. It looks like you just have.
Anya:
It´s not like I own him. I´m hurt that us spending nearly every waking hour together, doesn´t seem to matter to him.
Roxy:
It sounds like you´ve been friend zoned.
Anya:
I already knew that.
She has to fight the urge to cry.
8. Int. Classroom. Day.
Sav and Anya are fighting the boredom in a very boring biology class, where they´re watching some educational movie, that looks like it´s 20 years old, if not more. On the screen, some bees are gathering nectar from some flowers.
Speaker (voice over):
The nectar that these worker bees bring home are the life blood of the hive. Without it, the entire of process that leads to the queen birthing new eggs will stop and the hive itself will die out.
He continues speaking, as Anya writes something on a slip of paper and shows it to Sav.
It reads:
Who´s the girl?
He looks at it and writes a reply, trying his best to be as inconspicuous as possible.
He writes:
Alli´s BFF´s sister. We´ve talked lots of times.
Anya quickly writes a reply. It reads:
Do U like her?
She awaits anxiously, as he writes his reply. It reads:
I think so. She said yes.
Anya tries her best to fake a smile for him, but there´s clearly a deep pain hidden underneath it.
We cut back to the TV, where we´re getting close up´s from a beehive.
Speaker:
The worker bees gladly give their lives to please their queen and ensure her survival. After all, she is the one that all other life inside the hive revolves around.
We cut back to Anya, whom it doesn´t escape how well this relates to her own life.
9. Int. Hallway. Day.
JT is sleeping on a bench, when Emma sees him. She quietly sneaks up on him and gives him a wet Willie. It wakes him up and he looks annoyed.
JT:
What is this, grade school again?
Emma:
It´s time to wake up or you´ll sleep through your next class.
He sits up and wipes his eyes, as she takes a seat next to him.
JT:
Like there´s any point in going! I´m so tired, that I can´t concentrate on anything anymore.
Emma:
Lucky for you that there´s an easy solution.
JT:
When am I supposed to find the time? Today there´s school, then it´s straight to a three hour production meeting, before I have to get home and babysit Julia and Angie, so Manny can go to her Spirit Squad thing and Joey and Caitlin can visit their friends. I get almost no sleep at night, because I feel like there´s all of this pressure to fall asleep, so I end up lying awake half the night thinking about it.
Emma:
You´ll have to sleep at some point. Eventually your body will give in.
JT:
I´ll have time to catch some shut eye, when I retire someday.
He yawns and Emma feels sorry for him.
Emma:
Manny knows how lucky she is. You do so much for her and Julia.
JT:
Don´t feel sorry for me. I do it, because I want to.
He lets out another deep and long yawn.
JT:
If only I could remember which class I have next!
Emma:
It´s true. Julia will grow up to be the most well adjusted girl around and a lot of it will be, because she has such a great dad. By her dad, I don´t mean Craig.
They smile at each other.
JT:
Thanks, Em. But seriously, can you help me find out which class I have next, because I don´t have a clue and my brain is way too tired to work right now!
Emma:
Have you tried texting Danny?
JT:
That would work. You´re the best.
She gets up from her seat.
Emma:
No, you are. Just not when it comes to school!
She heads off to class, as he gets his phone out to text Danny.
10. Int. Hallway. Day.
Anya and Sav come out from a classroom with several other students.
Sav:
Man am I glad, that we only have one class left!
Anya:
Yeah, but it´s math.
Sav groans.
Sav:
Of course it had to be! So, what are we doing after school? I´m thinking a Chris Tucker marathon.
Anya:
As tempting as that is, I have plans for once.
Sav looks disappointed.
Sav:
You´re punishing me, because I asked Darcy out, aren´t you?
Anya:
No, someone actually asked me to do something with them!
Sav:
That girl I saw you with in the hallway?
Anya:
Her name is Lexy and she seems pretty cool. You don´t mind that I make a new friend, do you?
Sav smiles at her.
Sav:
Of course not. It has to be nice to be making friends with a girl for a change.
Anya:
You really don´t mind me bailing on you?
Sav:
We can hang out anytime. I hope you have a blast.
They smile at each other.
11. Ext. Hospital. Day.
Anya and Lexy come up to a large hospital. Anya looks surprised.
Anya:
You want to hang out at Toronto General? Is this some sort of morbid thing?
Lexy smiles at her.
Lexy:
We´re here to see Red. I want you to meet him.
Anya:
Why is he in the hospital?
Lexy:
They bring him in for a thorough check up once a month. It´s standard with AIDS patients in his stage of the disease.
Anya looks shocked.
Anya:
Did I hear you right? He has AIDS?
Lexy:
Bad things happen in life. Let´s not keep him waiting.
Anya follows after Lexy inside, still trying to take it all in.
12. Int. Waiting Room. Day.
Red is waiting with several others and is reading a magazine, when Anya and Lexy come in. He looks happy to have some company.
Red:
Hey! Who´s our new friend?
Lexy:
This is Anya. She´s cool in her own way.
Red:
It´s nice to meet you.
Red reaches out his hand to her and she can´t help being apprehensive to shake it. He doesn´t get mad though and looks understanding in stead,
Red:
It can´t spread through a handshake, Anya.
Anya gets over her fear and shakes his hand, as she smiles politely at him.
Anya:
Sorry about that. It´s nice to meet you too, Red.
Lexy:
How long have you been waiting?
Red:
So long, that I´ve lost track of time. You´d think, they´d at least let the dying get to the head of the line!
Anya can´t help giggling a little, making Red smile.
Anya:
Again, I´m sorry. I know, that I shouldn´t laugh.
Red:
Why not? I hope to do as much laughing as I can, in whatever time I have left.
A doctor comes into the waiting room and Red sees him. He walks over to him and talks to him. Anya and Lexy look each other in the eyes.
Lexy:
Do you think you could go on, knowing that it´ll be over in a year or two at the most?
Anya:
I would try to make the most of it too.
Lexy:
I know that with me, it would drive me nuts. How he goes on without letting in destroy him, I´ll never know.
We cut back to Red and from the looks of it, the news look pretty good. He shakes hands with the doctor and comes back to them smiling.
Red:
Guess whose T-Cell count is the best it´s been in months?
Lexy:
Congratulations. Any idea why?
Red:
They say that it could be because I´m eating better. I almost had to laugh!
Lexy:
Where to now?
Red:
Anywhere, that isn´t here?
Anya:
I could go for something to eat. There´s a good and very affordable pizza place not far from here.
Lexy:
Sounds great. See, Red. I told you, she was cool.
Anya:
I´m not! If anything, I´m anti-cool!
Red:
Welcome to the club, Anya.
Anya looks glad that she´s made some new friends, even if they are a little out of the ordinary.
13. Int. Taxi. Evening.
The taxi driver has pulled up to the curb. JT is fast asleep in the back seat and is snoring loudly.
Taxi Driver:
Hey! Wake up!
He reaches over to the back seat and shakes JT´s arm. It slowly wakes him up and he yawns.
Taxi Driver:
We´re there.
JT:
What do I owe you?
The driver checks the meter and stops it. It comes to twenty dollars and a few cents.
Taxi Driver:
We´ll call it an even twenty.
JT:
Thanks.
He hands the driver a twenty, as he yawns again.
Taxi Driver:
You´re welcome. I´d get some shut eye, if I were you, kid. You look like a walking ghost.
JT:
Funny, that´s exactly how I feel! Unfortunately, I´m now on to my 3rd job.
JT leaves the taxi, as the driver puts the money in his pocket.
14. Int. Joey and Caitlin´s House. Evening.
JT comes home and Manny greets him in the hallway.
Manny:
Good, you´re here. I can still make it in time, if I hurry.
JT:
I´m sorry. The production meeting kept dragging on.
She smiles at him and gives him a quick kiss.
Manny:
It´s not like I´m mad at you or anything. Don´t wait up. I probably won´t be home until after midnight.
JT:
That´s okay. I have to be awake to give you your goodnight kiss, don´t I?
She smiles to herself, as she shakes her head.
Manny:
What in the world did I do, to find someone as amazing as you?
JT:
I´m not amazing. You just make it easy.
Angie comes out to join them.
Angie:
Can you teach me how to play Rommy, like you promised?
JT:
When did I promise you that?
Angie:
Yesterday, remember?
Manny:
I heard it too. You have a job on your hands tonight, JT!
She gives him a small hug, before leaving them.
JT:
You go and clear the table and I´ll get the cards. We have a deck in out room.
Angie:
I´ve never seen you and Manny play cards.
JT:
We play a little poker sometimes.
Angie:
If it isn´t for money, then I can´t see Poker being fun to play.
JT:
There´s ways, Angie. Ways that I won´t tell you about, until you´re much older! Now go and clear the table.
Angie:
Sure!
She runs off looking happy, as he tries to drown another yawn, but fails at it.
15. Int. Manny and JT´s Room. Evening.
JT gets a deck of cards from a drawer, but also goes to another drawer. He pulls out a can of energy drink from it and downs it in two large sips, before burping loudly. We can hear Angie giggling from the other room.
Angie (off screen):
I heard that!
He smiles to himself, feeling the energy rush through his body.
16. Ext. Degrassi. Morning.
Sav is waiting for Anya outside of the school, when JT and Toby pass him by. JT looks even worse than he did the day before.
JT:
I should have skipped that final energy drink.
Toby:
Let me get this right. You have sleep problems and you drink energy drinks in the evening too?
JT:
Only when I really feel like I need it. Anyway, I´m pretty sure, I slept at some point.
Toby:
But you´re not sure?
JT:
Time has started to lose all meaning. It´s crazy, because it´s just sleep!
Toby:
It´s not un-natural for people with stress issues to have sleep problems.
JT laughs.
JT:
Me stressed? Have you forgotten, who you´re talking to?
Toby:
You´ve been going close to 24/7, week after week for months. How long has in been since you tried doing it without shots of artificial energy, to keep you going?
JT:
A few months ago probably.
Toby:
It shouldn´t be a requirement. Your body needs rest, whether you like it or not. At some point, it will get it´s way.
JT knows that Toby is right, but doesn´t say anything.
We cut back to Sav, who´s met by a shyly smiling Anya.
Sav:
Please tell me that your evening was better than mine!
Anya:
What did you do?
Sav:
I tried to pump Alli for information on Darcy. In stead I ended up listening to her talk about boys for most of the evening. She knew that she had me for once, the sneaky little runt!
Anya giggles.
Anya:
It sounds bad!
Sav:
This school will not be ready for it, when she starts here next year! What did you do?
Anya:
I met her friend Red and we all went for pizza. After that, the three of us went to see a movie, where we met up with Roxy´s boyfriend, Rick. He seemed nice too and also paid for our tickets.
Sav looks happy on her behalf.
Sav:
It sounds like you had a fun evening.
Anya:
I did. I also have a date for the dance now. He´s gay, but a date is still a date.
Sav:
Look at us! It´s like both of our worlds have opened up massively these past 24 hours.
Anya:
I know. Although I´m not sure, if it´s not a good thing.
She smiles to herself.
CLOSING CREDITS
