WHAT IF? - SEASON 4 EPISODE 6B - LIAR
IT´S TIME FOR ANOTHER "B" EPISODE, WHICH MEANS THAT IT CAN BE SEEN AS AN "EXTRA" EPISODE, THAT WASN´T ORIGINALLY PLANNED. SORRY ABOUT THE WAIT (I CAN SEE ON THE READER NUMBERS THAT MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING IN VAIN FOR IT THESE PAST DAYS), BUT MY PERSONAL LIFE SOMETIMES GETS IN THE WAY OF MY WRITING.
I FELT LIKE THERE WAS A CLIFFHANGER I HADN´T DEALT WITH FROM THE ANGIE EPISODE IN SEASON 2 AND FROM THERE, THIS EPISODE CAME TO ME. IT ALSO CAME FROM ME FEELING LIKE WE COULD ALL USE SOME CHEERING UP, WITH THE WAY THE WORLD LOOKS RIGHT NOW, SO IT´S DEFINITELY MORE ON THE LIGHT HEARTED, THAN THE DRAMATIC SIDE. THERE´LL BE PLENTY OF THAT IN THE REST OF THE SEASON!
1. Int. Child Psychologist´s Office. Day.
Angie is taking a Rorschach test (the one with the ink blots FYI), with Caitlyn sitting next to her. The psychologist holds up a picture for her to say, what it looks like to her.
Angie:
A cat head.
He puts the picture down on holds up another one.
Psychologist:
Let´s try one more. What about this one, Angela?
Angie:
I don´t know what to tell you.
Psychologist:
It doesn´t look like anything to you, except for an inkblot?
Angie:
Kinda.
Psychologist:
It´s okay. There´s no right or wrong answer.
Caitlyn:
Can you tell anything from that she told you?
Angie rolls her eyes at how embarrassing Caitlin is being.
Psychologist:
It´s only the first session, miss Ryan. But from what I can tell so far, Angela is a happy and well adjusted child.
Caitlyn looks relieved. Angie more like this was what she expected him to say.
Psychologist:
I´d like to finish with talking alone with her for a few minutes.
Angie:
It´s fine with me.
Caitlyn:
I´ll be right outside the door, waiting for you, Sweetheart.
Caitlyn leaves them. The psychologist gives Angie a friendly smile.
Psychologist:
I didn´t want to say it in front of your mom, but I have a gut feeling why you can´t concentrate in school.
Angie:
I´m just not good at school!
Psychologist:
You can tell me. I´m bound by law to keep it a secret between you and me.
Angie takes a moment to consider it first, while she looks at the floor.
Angie:
How did you deal with having your first crush?
She looks up at him, wanting answers.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Elementary School Hallway. Day.
Angie is with her friend Jenny, who´s getting books from her locker. Angie is distracted though, by the sight of her crush, an 11 year old boy named Jordan, who´s laughing with a pair of his friends close by.
Angie:
What do you think it would be like to kiss him?
Jenny:
Gross is my guess!
Angie:
I don´t think, it would be. I think, it would be really nice.
Jenny closes her locker and looks over at him too.
Jenny:
He´s not the worst of the boys here, I guess.
Angie:
It´s not like he would want to date someone like me anyway.
Angie sighs.
Angie:
Why can´t I go back to a month ago, when he was just another boy?
Jenny:
Have you tried talking to him?
Angie:
How do I start? "Hi, I´m Angie and we´ve never talked, but I think you´re cute! Wanna make out?".
Jenny smiles at her.
Jenny:
He´s never gonna know, unless you try something!
Angie:
I know, but the question is what to try?
She thinks hard, trying to come up with something.
3. Ext. Elementary School. Day.
Jordan is waiting outside of the school by himself, sitting on a bench. Angie comes out and is pleasantly surprised to get this chance to talk to him alone. She walks over to him and they make eye contact, when he hears her coming.
Angie:
Stranded?
Jordan:
My mom´s car broke down on the way here. I could be in for a long wait.
Angie:
Mind if I wait for my dad with you?
Jordan:
Not at all. Have a seat.
She sits down next to him and looks a little nervous.
Angie:
Your name is Jordan, right?
Jordan:
And you´re Angela, but everyone calls you Angie.
She looks pleasantly surprised.
Angie:
You´ve noticed me?
Jordan:
You´re hard not to notice. Why are you still here?
Angie:
Detention. I told Mrs. Anderson, that she smelled like a brothel.
Jordan laughs, making her laugh along with him.
Jordan:
You´re not the only one, who´s wanted to say that to her.
Angie:
You too, huh?
Jordan:
I wouldn´t have the guts to tell her to her face. Won´t your parents get mad, that you got detention?
Angie:
They probably would be, if they weren´t so used to it!
Jordan looks impressed with her.
Jordan:
I never knew, you were so wild!
Seeing that it´s working, Angie decides to go along with it.
Angie:
That´s me, wild and crazy! No one tells me what to do!
Jordan:
If you want to hang out after school sometime, I´ll hang out with you, just to see what kind of things you get up to.
Angie:
How about tomorrow?
Jordan:
Yeah, sure.
She´s so excited, that she almost can´t hide it, as Joey´s car pulls up by the curb.
Angie:
That´s my dad. See ya.
Jordan:
It was nice to finally talk to you, Angie. I´ve wanted to, I just didn´t know what we would talk about.
Angie:
Ditto.
Angie smiles widely, as she gets into the car.
4. Int. Living Room. Day.
It´s also report card day and Angie hands hers nervously over to Caitlyn, who´s sitting next to Joey on the couch. They look less than impressed.
Angie:
Before you say anything, there´s an explanation that goes along with those grades!
Caitlyn:
I suppose you think it´s a step up, that there´s only three D´s this time? How do you explain your F in English?
Angie:
That teacher doesn´t like me. She´s had it in for me, since the beginning of the school year!
Joey:
Is she the the one you told, that she smelled like a brothel?
Angie looks apologetic.
Angie:
I´m aware, that it won´t help me get that grade up, but she really did!
Ciatlyn rolls her eyes, while Joey tries his best not to laugh.
Caitlyn:
Are you trying to sabotage your chances of getting an education?
Angie:
No, I swear!
Joey:
Ange, getting detention again and now this report card. If you don´t watch out, they´ll end up holding you back a year. It´s not something you want to try, believe me.
Angie:
I´ll try my best to do better.
Caitlyn:
And?
Angie:
Not mouth off to the teachers, so I get detention again!
She tries not to look annoyed at having to do this every month.
5. Int. Elementary School Hallway. Day.
Angie comes walking down the hallway and is met by Jordan.
Jordan:
Hi, Angie. We´re still hanging out after school, aren´t we?
Angie:
As fas as I know.
Jordan:
Cool, cuz I was thinking about some stuff, we could do.
Angie:
Sure. I´m up for anything!
Jordan:
Anything, I can come up with?
Angie:
Anything! We´re talking no limits at all!
Jordan:
You´re really cool, Angie. Not like the other girls.
He leaves her. She smiles to herself.
6. Int. Classroom. Day.
Angie and Jenny are talking before class starts.
Angie:
He told me that I´m cool and not like other girls! My heart melted, right then and there!
Jenny:
Are you ignoring the problem, that he thinks you´re someone, you´re not?
Angie:
I can be a wild girl, if I put my mind to it!
Jenny:
Can you? What do you think, a wild girl does?
Angie takes a few seconds to think about it.
Angie:
I don´t know. Do you?
Jenny:
You´d better find out fast, or he´s gonna know that you were lying!
Angie:
It´s not like I´m completely clueless! They do stuff like ... make out with boys, who are older than them.
Jenny:
That´s one, you´ve never come close to doing.
Angie:
Shop lift.
Jenny:
That´s two.
Angie:
Get into fights.
Jenny:
I´ve seen you apologize to a dead worm, that you accidentally stepped on and squished! You´re not the fighting type. Why not come clean to him now and then he can make up his mind, if he likes the real you? I can´t see why he wouldn´t.
Angie:
Because this is working! I´ll let him find out gradually, after he´s fallen for me.
Jenny:
It´s your funeral!
Jenny clearly isn´t along with the plan, but Angie looks unfazed by it.
7. int. House. Day.
Angie and Jordan come up to a house on a fairly pleasant looking street.
Jordan:
This guy has the best apple tree on the street and he always chases us off, when we try to steal one. Today, it´s finally gonna happen!
Angie doesn´t look too sure about it, making him self conscious.
Jordan:
Although I guess that´s kind of tame, compared to the things you do. We don´t have to do it, if you don´t want to.
She makes her decision and smiles at him.
Angie:
It sounds like a great idea, Jordan!
Jordan:
I was thinking that since he doesn´t know you ...
Angie:
I can create a distraction. Got ya.
Jordan:
All I need is one minute. Trust me, these apples are worth it.
Angie:
I´ll take your word for it.
They slap hands and she walks up to the door, while Jordan begins to sneak around the back. Angie walks up to the door and knocks on it. Soon after, a gruff looking man in his 60´s opens the door.
Man:
What do you want?
Angie:
I´m collecting for the needy in the 3rd world.
Man:
I´m not interested!
He tries to close the door, but she isn´t one to give up that easily.
Angie:
Will you hear me out, just for a minute? If you still don´t want to donate after that, I promise never to knock on your door again.
The man isn´t looking too interested in her offer, but since it´s a kid and everything, he goes along with it.
Man:
You get half a minute.
Angie:
Thanks so much. You wouldn´t believe how many have slammed their door in my face today!
Man:
Time is ticking.
Angie:
You´ve seen the newscasts from over there, haven´t you? Is it right that we have it so good, when they have practically nothing and kids like me are are being sold into slavery, because their parents can´t afford to feed them? For just a tiny amount, you can make a huge difference in their lives. Did you know, that it only takes a dollar a day, to keep a child from dying from starvation?
Man:
I don´t care! I gave you thirty seconds, so scram!
He slams the door in her face, just as Jordan comes around from the back with a pair of large, delicious looking apples in his hands.
Jordan:
Let´s get out of here!
They run off together laughing.
8. Ext. Street. Day.
Angie and Jordan are enjoying their apples on a bus stop bench.
Angie:
That jerk doesn´t deserve to have apples that are this good anyway!
Jordan:
You won´t get any arguments from me on that subject!
Angie:
The sad part is that he probably does the same thing, when it comes to real collectors.
Jordan:
I wish, I could have seen you work your magic.
Angie:
There´s no magic to it. It´s just being myself.
She can see that Jordan is starting to like her, the way she wants him to and she´s clearly liking having this power over him. They throw the pits into a garbage bin and wipe their hands on their pants.
Jordan:
I´m counting on you to come up with a good one now!
Angie:
I know exactly what we should do!
Jordan:
Will it get us into trouble?
Angie:
Probably not, but it could be very funny!
Jordan:
You´re so cool!
Angie can´t hide, that she loves it when he praises her like that.
9. Int. City Hall. Day.
Angie and Jordan come walking through city hall and up to the reception, where a woman in her 30´s is working as a receptionist. She smiles at them, perhaps a bit surprised at getting visitors that are as young as them.
Receptionist:
Let me guess. Your dad or mom works here and you need to talk to them. What´s their name?
Angie:
Actually, we´re here for a different reason.
Reception:
Oh?
Jordan:
We´ve decided to get married.
Angie:
Also, we´d like to do it today, please.
The receptionist looks shocked to say the least. Angie and Jordan try their best to keep a straight face and do a remarkably good job at it, for a pair of kids their age.
Receptionist:
How old are you?
Angie:
He only recently turned eleven, but I´m almost twelve!
Jordan:
If you can direct us on where to go and who to talk to, that would be great.
Receptionist:
Marriage licenses are down the hall, but I doubt if they´ll give you one.
Angie:
Why? If we think that we´re old enough to make this decision, who´s to say that we aren´t?
Jordan:
We´ll have a talk with the folks down there, see if they´re more reasonable. Down the hall, you said?
Reception:
There´s a sign on the door. You can´t miss it.
Angie:
Thanks and since you´ve been so nice to us, you can come to our wedding! I´ll come down and get you, when it´s time.
Reception:
Thanks, I guess!
Angie and Jordan head up the hallway and can no longer stop themselves from laughing. The receptionist watches them leave and smiles to herself, while shaking her head.
10. Ext. City Hall. Day.
Angie and Jordan come out, still chuckling.
Angie:
What´s the world coming to, when they won´t allow two eleven year old´s to get married?
Jordan:
I loved your argument, that if they could marry off princesses your age in medieval Europe, then you should be allowed to do the same.
Angie:
That one came to me out of nowhere!
Jordan:
It´s so weird to think, that I hadn´t talked to you until yesterday. Now it feels like I´ve known you my entire life. Only you´re still fresh and exciting. It´s hard to explain.
Angie takes his words with a smile.
Angie:
You don´t have to try. I get what you mean.
Jordan:
You feel the same way, huh?
Angie conscience starts to get the better of her, seeing as he´s fallen too hard for her act.
Angie:
Jordan, there´s something, I should tell you ...
Jordan:
Before you do, let me tell you what I have in mind.
Angie:
What?
Jordan:
There´s this older kid on our street, who always picks on me. I say that we steal his bike and throw it into a river or something.
Angie:
Haven´t we already done the stealing part?
Jordan:
You´re right. We´ll do it tomorrow.
Angie gets quiet and he gets worried.
Jordan:
Sorry, I tend to rush into things.
Angie:
It´s still better than running into things!
Her little joke eases the mood between them a little.
Jordan:
If I´m scaring you off by being too forward, let me know.
Angie:
You´re not, Jordan. We can do one more thing and then I really should be getting home.
Jordan:
Same here. My mom hates it when I´m late for dinner.
Angie:
Mine too. Any ideas?
Jordan:
There is one thing, I´ve sort of been thinking about.
Angie looks intrigued.
11. Ext. Park. Day.
At a park, a little away from everything and hidden behind a grove of trees is a half covered storm shelter, that those of you who read my other series "Degrassi: Aftermath" will know very well, since several important scenes took place in this spot. That was of course many years later, when it was old and run down, but here we get to see it in it´s prime, right after it was built. Jordan holds Angie´s hand, as he leads her to it.
Angie:
What is this place?
Jordan:
It´s a storm shelter, but I hear that teenagers use it as a make out spot.
Angie:
I can see why. It´s nice and secluded.
Jordan:
Which is why I thought it would be the perfect place for our first kiss.
Angie bats an eye at what he said.
Angie:
Could you repeat that, just so I´m sure, I wasn´t imagining it?
Jordan:
Does that mean, you want to too?
Angie:
Yeah!
He looks pleased with her response.
Angie:
Only I´ve never actually kissed a boy before.
Jordan:
I haven´t had my first kiss either. But I couldn´t imagine anyone better to have it with than you. It seems like we´re kind of the same, you know?
Caught up in the moment, they´re almost about to kiss, when she pulls away from him, as she finally can´t take the lying anymore.
Angie:
Jordan, I´ve been lying to you all the time, since we first started talking! I´m not some wild girl and I don´t even know what one does! I´m just a girl with a big mouth, that from time to time gets me in trouble. I´ve never stolen or anything like that, until today at least.
Jordan looks disappointed and Angie clearly isn´t feeling too proud of herself.
Angie:
I´ll understand it, if you never want to speak to me again.
She starts to walk away from him.
Jordan:
I still want to kiss you!
She turns around and smiles at him.
Angie:
So do I, but you should be kissing the real me. Not the girl, I made up.
She leaves him to think about it and looks glad, that she made the right decision in the end.
12. Int. Kitchen. Evening.
Caitlyn is tasting her spaghetti sauce, looking pretty pleased with how it tuned out, when Angie comes in.
Caitlyn:
Hi, Honey. Give this a taste and tell me, if it needs more spices.
She dips her spoon in the sauce and hands it to Angie, who tastes it.
Angie:
I little more Oregano wouldn´t hurt.
Caitlyn:
That´s what you always think!
Angie:
What can I say? I love Oregano!
Caitlyn:
As long as that´s the only kind of green herb, you like!
Angie looks confused, trying to think of what kind of "Green Herb", Caitlyn could be talking about.
Angie:
Huh?
Caitlyn:
You´ll find out, when you get older!
She puts a little more Oregano in the sauce and gives it a swirl.
Caitlyn:
Did you and Jenny have fun?
Angie:
Actually, I wasn´t hanging out with Jenny.
Caitlyn:
You know that you´re supposed to call and tell me, if you change plans.
Angie:
I´m sorry. The reason I didn´t tell you, is that I hung out with a boy named Jordan.
Caitlyn:
We don´t mind, if you´re friends with a boy. If anything, we´d encourage you to, so you can broaden your perspective on the world.
Angie:
He wanted to kiss me.
Caitlyn:
In that case, maybe not with this particular boy!
She looks Angie in the eyes and Angie has to look away, telling Caitlyn all she needs to know.
Caitlyn:
You wanted to kiss him too, didn´t you?
Angie:
He´s really cute and not like most of the other boys. He´s sweet and sensitive.
Caitlyn:
Like you are. I´m not at all surprised, that a boy like him would like you that way.
Angie smiles to herself.
Caitlyn:
But you are kind of young to start making out with boys, Sweetie. I didn´t have my first kiss, until I was 14.
Angie:
Don´t you wish, looking back, that it had happened sooner?
Caitlyn:
No, because there is definitely something to be said for the time, you spend looking forward to it. When it happens, you hopefully feel great, but there´s a magic that goes away, once the mystery is solved and you know what it´s like.
Angie:
You´re saying that I should wait ...
Caitlyn:
Another year, minimum. If this boy really likes you, he´ll understand.
Angie nods in understanding.
13. Int. Elementary School Hallway. Morning.
Angie and Jenny are heading to their first class of the day. Jenny is making a disgusted face.
Jenny:
You almost kissed him? Ew!
Angie:
I can hear, that it´ll be a few years before you´re ready for a boyfriend!
Jenny:
I´d rather kiss a dirty old dog on the mouth, than any of the boys here! It´s still less gross than them!
Angie:
Jordan isn´t gross.
Jenny:
He is, if you don´t have rose colored glasses on.
Angie:
Do you think he´ll be okay with waiting?
They round a corner and see Jordan waiting for Angie outside of the door to their first class of the day.
Jenny:
It looks like you´re about to find out. Nervous?
Angie:
Only very!
She smiles nervously at Jordan, who smiles back at her. Jenny passes by him and heads into the classroom.
Angie:
I´m sorry about yesterday.
Jordan:
You don´t have to be. It was one of the best times, I´ve ever had. Until you left, anyway.
Angie looks relieved.
Angie:
You didn´t like my dramatic exit?
Jordan:
It didn´t give me the chance to patch things up. I´m not wild either. I do as my mom says and we go to church every Sunday. I´m like you, just a normal kid.
Angie:
I don´t know if anyone, who knows me, would describe me as being normal!
Jordan:
I´d really like to find out, why that is. Which is another way of asking you, if you´d like to be friends.
She looks flattered, the little one.
Angie:
I´m not sure that I´ll be ready for anything more, for what could be a long time. Are you okay with that?
Jordan:
What do you say, we put "that moment" somewhere far in the back of our minds, until we´re ready to become more someday far into the future?
Angie:
I think, that´s the best idea, either of us have come up with so far!
Angie smiles to herself.
CLOSING CREDITS
