WHAT IF? - SEASON 4 EPISODE 14 - SAIL AWAY SWEET SISTER
1. Int. Joey and Caitlin´s House. Morning.
JT comes in with baby Julia on his arm. She´s grown a lot since the last time we saw her, being three years old now.
JT:
Do you remember where you left it?
Julia:
No, sorry. Are you mad at me?
JT:
No, of course not, Pumpkin Pie!
He kisses her forehead and sits her down on a chair.
JT:
But we don´t have all day, so we need to find it fast.
Julia:
It could be in Angie´s room. I played with it in there yesterday.
JT:
Do we dare? On one hand it´s an invasion of her privacy and on the other, you´ll be fussy all day, if you don´t have your dolly.
He takes a second to consider it, before making a decision.
JT:
Don´t tell her, okay?
Julia nods in understanding.
2. Int. Angie´s Room. Morning.
No one is there, when JT comes in. He looks around and quickly finds Julia´s doll lying on the floor, amid the rest of the mess. He shakes his head to himself and smiles. He´s about to leave, when he notices that Angie has left her diary on her dresser. Being curious, he picks it up and starts looking through it.
JT:
Let´s see what she wrote about you.
He quickly scans through it and while the first pages mainly make him smile, the final entry however doesn´t. Whatever it says is enough to make him shocked.
3. Int. Manny and JT´s Room. Evening.
Manny and JT are snuggling on their bed, but his mind is elsewhere.
Manny:
That was a fun day. Did you notice, that Julia didn´t cry once?
JT:
She´s growing into a little lady.
Manny:
Not for a while yet, thankfully!
JT:
These things happen fast. One day they´re little kids and the next, they´re doing adult things.
Manny:
The most adult thing Julia does is eat with her spork and even that, you can´t say she´s good at yet! We still have many blissful years ahead, where we get to enjoy her being a kid, until she becomes a teenager and starts thinking that we´re lame for trying too hard!
She smiles at JT, but he doesn´t smile back at her.
Manny:
Unless you weren´t talking about Julia.
JT:
I took a peek in Angie´s diary.
Manny:
JT ...
JT:
I know, but I was curious what she´d written about me. In stead I found out that she ... she ...
Manny starts to get worried.
Manny:
JT, if anything is wrong with her, we need to tell Joey and Caitlyn.
JT:
I don´t think she´d want them to know this.
Manny:
What is it?
JT:
Brace yourself for a shock. Angie ... has a crush on a boy.
Manny´s worry quickly turns to laughter.

4. Int. Emma´s Room. Morning.
A still slightly tired looking Emma with morning hair turns on the computer to check her E-Mails. We find out here that her current login name is SeansGirl89. Opening the E-Mail program, there´s plenty of junk mail among it and things like that, but the top one catches her attention. She clicks on it and looks very interested in what it says. Spike knocks gently on the door and comes in.
Spike:
You´ll have to make due with eating cereal for breakfast, Em. I forgot to buy bread, when I was at the store yesterday.
Emma:
I´ll survive. Check out this E-Mail. Does it look legit to you?
Spike comes over to look at the screen.
Spike:
"Dear, Ms. Nelson. Through contacting blah, blah, blah I found out blah, blah, blah. I´m writing to you as a representative of King and Kubrick Publishing inc. We would like to arrange a meeting to discuss a possible deal to have your works published. We consider you to be a talented writer and think that you have a lot of potential, which we can help you to get the most out of".
Spike looks proud of Emma, who´s still not sure.
Spike:
It looks legit to me. Snake!
Snake (off screen):
What?
Spike:
Come and look at this E-mail, Emma got!
Snake soon comes in to join them. He looks it over and smiles at Emma.
Snake:
I don´t see any signs that it´s a fake. Do you want to meet with them?
Emma:
I guess so!
Emma eases up and finally lets herself enjoy her success.
5. Int. Kitchen. Morning.
The family are getting ready to leave for their perspective days, with Manny helping Angie put the final touches on her look for the day. She looks pretty in a cute sort of kid way and looks pleased with it, when Manny shows her in her small make-up mirror.
Angie:
Wow!
Manny:
It´s wild what a tiny bit of make-up can do, isn´t it?
JT looks like he´s the only one, who isn´t on board with it.
JT:
Are you guys okay with her wearing make-up?
Angie looks annoyed with him.
Angie:
Why shouldn´t I be allowed to? There´s lots of girls in my grade, who wear make-up.
Joey:
As long as it´s not more than what she has on now, I have no problem with it.
Manny:
Let her be a kid, JT.
JT:
That´s what I´m trying to. I´m sorry Angie, but you´re too young to wear make-up. It´ll only lead to you starting to go on dates with boys.
Angie:
Then you´re not gonna like, what I´m doing tonight!
JT:
You have a date?
Angie shoots him a smile to comfort him.
Angie:
It´s just me and my friend Jordan, who happens to be a boy, sharing a pizza and going to the cinema. Nothing wild or crazy.
Joey:
You can rest easy knowing that I´ll be driving them there AND picking them up afterwards!
Caitlyn:
That means no hanky panky!
Joey:
Don´t think that I won´t be checking your neck for hickeys, young miss Jeremiah!
Angie rolls her eyes at them.
Angie:
You guys are SO embarrassing right now! I´ll wait in the car.
Angie leaves them.
JT:
Can´t we discuss this? She´s way too young to go on a date!
Caitlyn:
Like it or not, she´s almost a teenager.
JT:
Well, I don´t like it!
He sulks, which the others find a little amusing.
5. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Sean is waiting by Emma´s locker with a flower, he picked for her. It makes her smile and he´s glad to be the reason, why she´s smiling.
Sean:
Happy anniversary.
Emma:
Am I being terribly unromantic, if I can´t remember which one it is?
Sean:
Guess.
She thinks hard and puts her arms around him.
Emma:
Our first kiss, isn´t it?
Sean:
No, but you´re close. It was a first, just not that one.
They smile at each other.
Emma:
Oh, the other one!
Sean:
Yes, that one!
Emma:
It´s crazy to think, that it´s almost been five years since we had our first kiss. I still remember it, like it happened yesterday.
Sean:
Do you want to commemorate the occasion in a fitting way tonight? We could start by going back to my place after school ends and ...
He whispers something in her ear, that makes her smile.
Emma:
Are you trying to give me more writing material? Because I´ve never heard of that one before!
Sean:
Could you leave it out of your stories? I´d prefer it, if what we do in the bedroom, stays between us.
Emma:
They don´t know that it´s about us.
Sean:
It´s one thing for you to tell Manny about it and her to occasionally giggle, when she sees me. Having strangers knowing intimate details about our relationship feels kind of icky.
Emma still fakes a smile for him, but starts to worry.
6. Ext. Degrassi. Day.
Emma and Manny are catching some rays in between classes.
Emma:
Can I ask you a theoretical question?
Manny:
If you´re ready for a theoretical answer.
Emma:
Say that you were offered a big opportunity, like your dream job offer for example.
Manny:
I haven´t decided exactly what that would be yet, but go on.
Emma:
But you knew that it could upset JT, if you accepted it.
Manny:
Why would he get upset?
Emma:
Because ... your boss is super hot and looks like he´s into you!
Manny:
JT trusts me. He knows that he has nothing to worry about.
Emma:
Okay, bad example.
Manny:
Can we stop speaking in code, so you can tell me what this is really about?
Emma:
I´m on the verge of being offered a book deal.
Manny looks at Emma and makes wide eyes.
Manny:
Say that again?
Emma:
A publisher wants to release my stories.
Manny:
For real? You didn´t dream this?
Emma:
I can show you the E-Mail I got from them.
Manny looks happy for her.
Manny:
That´s amazing, Em!
Emma:
Is it, when it comes down to it?
Manny:
How many writers do you think struggle for years to get anything published?
Emma:
How many?
Manny:
I can´t tell you exactly, but it´s a lot! Why wouldn´t Sean like it?
Emma:
He doesn´t want everyone to know about our most intimate details. I can see where he´s coming from.
Manny:
So can I, but an opportunity like this might not come along twice. You have to at least find out, if it something or not, before you make a decision. If it is, then you tell him. If it isn´t, then who says that he has to know there ever was an offer?
Emma:
Sneaky and clever at the same time. Thanks, Manny.
Manny:
Anytime. What you have with Sean is great, but just imagine where this could take you. Your smut could be what thousands of lonely middle aged women read before they to to bed with their cats.
Emma thinks about it and smiles to herself.
7. Int. Hallway. Day.
Emma and Manny come down the hallway and see JT coming towards them. Manny smiles at Emma.
Manny:
Wanna have a little fun with him?
Emma smiles back at her and they go to meet JT.
JT:
Hey!
Emma:
That´s the best greeting, JT Yorke can come up with? "Hey"?
JT:
My comedic sense isn´t up to par today.
Manny:
Cheer up, Honey! It´ll still be at least a year, until Angie starts having sex.
JT looks freaked out by the thought, to the girl´s amusement.
JT:
Don´t even say that!
Emma:
If she goes by our average, with you getting pregnant at 14 and me at 15, that´s still three years until she pushes the first one out.
Manny:
We´ll get the baby to call you grandpa, how about that?
JT:
That´s not funny! I´m late for class.
He leaves them, but they look unapologetic.
Emma:
You don´t think it´s mean to tease him?
Manny:
If Angie growing up freaks him out this much, then he needs to get teased. If he learns from it, then so much the better.
Manny smiles to herself.
8. Int. The Dot. Day.
JT and Toby are sitting at a table but JT is disgusted by a couple, who are around fifteen years old, that can´t keep their hands off each other at a nearby table.
JT:
Don´t they know that this is a family place?
Toby:
Not this time of day! How many people would you guess have had sex in that bathroom, you, Paige, Emma, Sean, Kendra, Manny and me included?
JT:
I´d rather not know!
Toby:
It´s probably the first time they´re in love, so let them enjoy it.
JT:
How would you feel, if that was your daughter?
Toby:
Projecting much?
JT:
I don´t want Angie to do the things, we´ve done with girls. I want her to ...
Toby:
Remain a kid forever?
JT looks annoyed, that he´s right.
JT:
Is it totally wrong of me to want that?
Toby grins at him.
Toby:
No, but it is an impossible dream. She´s a good kid, even if she is too much like you were sometimes. She´s not gonna change too much overnight.
JT:
That´s what I´m worried about. I wasn´t exactly the smartest kid in the world, if you remember?
Toby:
If you´re that worried, find out what movie she´s going to and which cinema. Sit in the back and try ...
JT has had enough of the couple and goes to scold them.
JT:
Don´t you have any self respect, young lady?
Boy:
Say what?
JT:
Don´t even get me started with you! I know exactly what´s on your mind!
The couple look annoyed with him, as Toby comes to break it up.
Girl:
Take a chill pill, Grandpa!
JT:
What would your dad think, if he knew you were doing this?
Boy:
Her dad is dead.
JT sees his mistake and calms down. He looks apologetic, as does Toby for him.
Toby:
He´s having a really bad day. You´ll have to excuse him.
JT:
I´m sorry about your dad. Go back to what you were doing.
Girl:
Like I need your permission to?
Toby lead him back to their table and they sit down again. JT looks shocked at his own behavior just now.
Toby:
I was about to say don´t cause a scene, before you beat me to it with that memorable display of spontaneous insanity!
JT:
This is driving me nuts! I have to go with them now!
Toby:
I´m going with you, just in case.
JT looks grateful to him for it.
9. Int. Cinema. Evening.
Angie and Jordan take their seats next to one another, armed with plenty of candy, popcorn and soda! It all looks very innocent and like they´re just two kids having a fun night out on the town. They don´t even notice that sitting in the back row, wearing sunglasses as a disguise, is JT sitting next to Toby. Toby feels a little ridiculous, sitting next to a guy wearing sunglasses in a movie theater!
Toby:
Take those off! You look ridiculous.
JT:
Have they come in yet?
Toby:
If you took your sunglasses off, you could see them for yourself.
JT does and sees Angie and Jordan laughing together, He doesn´t like it.
JT:
Whatever joke he told had better be PG!
They´re surprised to see Emma, Manny and Sean come over to join them. Manny sits down next to JT and acts casual. Emma sits down next to Sean.
Toby:
This is a nice, unexpected surprise!
JT:
What are you doing here?
Manny:
Like we´d miss "Alvin and the Chipmunks 5: Revenge of the Chipettes" for the world?
JT:
I knew that I shouldn´t have told you, where we were going.
Emma:
Are they here?
Toby:
They´re flirting down in the front rows.
Emma sees them and smiles.
Emma:
Aww, they´re so adorable!
Sean:
Remember our first date?
They smile at each other. JT is still annoyed, as the only one.
JT:
Wasn´t your first date a total disaster?
Emma:
Right until he talked to me the day after and I knew that I still had a chance. If he would accept that from me, then he would accept anything.
Sean:
I still would, within reason.
JT:
And god knows how many break up´s later, here you are!
Toby:
Would you rather that she used our old technique?
JT:
You mean stare at the girl from afar, hoping that she´ll notice, but knowing in the back of our minds, that there´s no chance of scoring with her?
Toby:
That one!
JT:
Any day of the week!
The previews start playing and the lights begin to dim, ending the conversation.
10. Int. Cinema. Evening. (Later)
JT isn´t concentrating much on the movie, in stead keeping his focus solely on Angie and Jordan, who gets up to go to the bathroom. JT sees this as a chance to have a little talk with him and gets up.
Manny (whispering):
You´re not gonna do anything dumb, are you?
JT (whispering):
When have I done that before?
Manny (whispering):
More times than I can remember!
He leaves her and she tries to concentrate on the movie. Emma leans in to talk to her.
Emma (whispering):
I wasn´t expecting a time travel subplot, but it´s not bad for a kid´s movie!
Manny (whispering):
As long as we don´t get another Chipette version of "My Heart Will Go On"!
Manny goes back to following the movie. Emma turns to Sean.
Emma (whispering):
Can you make sure that JT doesn´t lose his temper with that boy?
Sean (whispering sarcastically):
I don´t know. I´m pretty into this!
We hear the first notes of "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls coming on with Chipette vocals to match and he gets up.
Sean (whispering):
On second thought ...
He follows after JT.
11. Int. Bathroom. Evening.
Jordan is washing his hands after his bathroom visit. JT comes in and stares him down, making his uncomfortable.
JT:
Having a nice time, Jordan?
Jordan:
How do know my name?
JT:
The girl you´re on a date with is like a kid sister to me.
Jordan:
You must be JT.
JT:
Exactly. You can´t tell Angie this, but I´ve been watching you all night. You´re quite the little gentleman, aren´t you? Sharing your popcorn and candy with her. Is it because you want something from her?
Jordan starts to get nervous.
Jordan:
No, I swear! We´re just friends!
JT:
Is that all you want to be with her?
Jordan:
Yes! I mean no!
JT:
Which is it?
Jordan:
I´d like to be her boyfriend. Please don´t hit me!
He puts his hand up to guard himself, but is relieved to see JT offering him a fist bump in stead.
JT:
Three rules: Take it slow, always treat her with respect and there´s absolutely no cheating on her of any kind. Are we clear?
They bump fists. just as Sean comes in.
JT:
You have my blessing.
They smile at each other and Jordan hurries out of there. Sean looks a little impressed with JT.
Sean:
I was afraid you´d stuck his head down the toilet!
JT:
Nah, he seems like a good kid. Now that he´s been given a scare, I´m positive that he´ll treat our favorite little angel like a princess. You needed a break from the chipmunk insanity too, huh?
Sean:
It´s a reminder, that there´s a reason why they call them kid´s movies!
JT:
I would have thought you and Em would be celebrating in style. It´s not every day that your girlfriend gets the offer of a lifetime.
Sean looks confused. JT sees that he over spoke.
JT:
You didn´t know, did you?
Sean:
What kind of offer? She hasn´t told me anything!
JT:
Manny told me. I figured that you would have been the first one, Em gave the news to. She´s being offered a publishing deal for her stories.
Sean looks disappointed.
JT:
Why wouldn´t she tell you about it?
Sean:
I know why. She´s afraid of losing me again.
He starts to wreck his brain with thoughts.
12. Ext. Cinema. Evening.
Angie and Jordan leave together and not long after, the others come out.
Emma:
Well, that was one thing I´m not doing again, until I have kids of my own someday!
Sean:
That time, that sorrow!
Toby:
I need to go home and listen to some good music, to remind myself that such a thing exists!
JT:
Can´t say I blame ya. Later, Buddy.
Toby leaves them.
Manny:
I´ll ride with JT. See ya tomorrow!
Emma:
Don´t do anything, we wouldn´t do!
Manny and JT go off to find his car. Emma and Sean take it a little slower.
Emma:
Do you want to go back to your place and do something so adult, that kids haven´t heard about it?
Sean:
Like in your stories?
Emma:
Those are just my fantasies.
Sean:
Not from what JT tells me. Why didn´t you tell me?
She looks apologetic, but at the same time relieved that he´s being understanding.
Emma:
It´s not like I have a solid offer on the table yet. They only just contacted me today, saying that they´d like to meet and discuss a deal.
Sean:
That´s still huge!
Emma:
I thought, with what you said ...
They stop walking and he looks her in the eyes.
Sean:
Emma, writing is something you love and you´re clearly great at! If this is something, that can be a real future for you, of course I´ll support you every step of the way!
She looks over the moon at how sweet he´s being.
Emma:
Do you mean it?
Sean:
You´re the girl, I want to spend the rest of my life with. There´ll never been another girl, who´ll mean as much to me, as you do. If it wasn´t so crazy of an idea, I´d ask you to marry me here and now!
Emma gets a crazy idea and kisses him.
Emma:
Why don´t we?
Sean:
Get married? Did they slip something in your drink?
Emma:
I mean it. Let´s get married!
She smiles widely at him and he gives in.
Sean:
You are crazy, you know that?
Emma:
Only crazy about you!
They kiss passionately to seal the deal.
13. Int. Living Room. Evening.
JT is waiting on the couch and is casually watching TV, when a cheerful Angie comes home.
JT:
Hi, Ange. Did you have a nice evening?
Angie:
The best!
JT:
Where´s Joey?
Angie:
Parking the car.
She sits down next to him and he smiles back at her.
JT:
Was it a good movie?
Angie:
You know what the weird thing is? It´s like it went in one ear and out the other!
JT:
What a strange phenomenon!
Angie:
I kept hoping that he´d hold my hand all through the movie. You probably don´t want to hear me talking about this stuff.
JT:
No, it´s okay. Did he?
She smiles widely.
Angie:
Right at the end. Then he did it again, while we were waiting for dad to pick us up.
JT:
You really like him, don´t you?
Angie:
Yeah. I guess, I do.
JT:
You should also be going to bed. It´s past your bedtime.
She gives him a hug.
Angie:
Thanks for being cool about me dating. I get that it must be weird for you.
JT:
Don´t move too fast. I have to be able to keep up too.
They smile at each other and she heads to her room. JT smiles to himself.
JT:
They grow up in the blink an eye!
Even if he might not be entirely ready for Angie to become a grown up yet, he looks happy for her all the same.
