WHAT IF? - SEASON 4 EPISODE 26 - DEVIL IN HIGH HEELS PART 2
ATTENTION! THIS IS PART TWO OF A TWO PART EPISODE, WHERE THE EPISODES WERE RELEASED AT THE SAME TIME! BE SURE TO READ PART ONE, BEFORE YOU READ THIS ONE OR YOU WILL BE VERY CONFUSED AT WHAT´S GOING ON!
1. Int. Veronica´s Room. Evening.
Veronica is lying on her bed, talking to someone on her phone.
Veronica:
It´s not something I do often, but you caught me at the worst possible time right before ... well, you know.
Scott (voice over):
It´s okay! Kind of funny actually. I had no idea that you did that, but I guess it´s true, that everyone does.
Veronica:
Thanks for understanding. I´d also prefer, if you didn´t tell anyone. It´s natural, but still kind of taboo.
Scott (voice over):
I you need a hand or a finger next time, let me know!
Veronica:
Couldn´t you hear, how good I am at it?
We can hear Scott laughing on the other end.
Scott (voice over):
See you in school tomorrow.
Veronica:
See ya. Sweet dreams.
She hangs up on him and looks pleased with herself. She texts someone and we get a shot of the screen.
To Sav:
We got away with it. This was the best day in a long time. I wish every day could be like this one. XOXO.
We cut back to Veronica, who leans back and looks up at the ceiling, while smiling to herself.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. School Counselor´s Office. Day.
School Counselor had Veronica in the hot seat.
School Counselor:
Veronica, I want you to know, that there´s nothing to be scared of. This is standard protocol, when a top student gets detention.
Veronica:
Did Ms. H. tell you the reason?
School Counselor:
Yeah, she said that you asked for it. Something about a boy?
Veronica:
Two of them. One I´m with and rather wouldn´t be and one, I wish, I could be with.
School Counselor:
You´re not the first teenager, who´s run into this problem. Matters of the heart are difficult, when you´re your age. You can talk to me. I´m bound to secrecy by law.
Veronica:
Are you sure, you can handle the whole truth?
School Counselor:
I´m a professional. There´s nothing, I haven´t heard before.
Veronica:
Alright! You asked for it!
The school counselor braces herself for it.
3. Int. Principal´s Office. Day.
Hatzilakos is working on her PC, when School Counsellor pops in.
School Counselor:
I talked to Veronica Malone, like you asked me to.
Hatzilakos:
How did it go?
School Counselor:
She has so many daddy issues, that it´s coming out both her ears! She´s fine though, except for a bad case of "Fell for the wrong boy syndrome".
Hatzilakos:
Some things never change!
The school counselor leaves her again.
4. Int. Hallway. Day.
Sav is talking to Danny and Derek.
Danny:
Thanks, man! You´re a life saver!
Derek:
We promise to take care of your van, like it was our own.
Sav:
It´s fine. I don´t need to it on Saturday anyway. Just make sure that I get it back in one piece.
Danny:
We´ll pay you back a favor some ... day.
They see Veronica coming towards them and Danny loses the ability to speak. She winks at them, as she walks past them and clearly likes to soak up the adulation.
Danny:
She is a goddess!
Derek:
An easy 10!
Danny:
That girl blows the top off the scale! Can you imagine being the guy, who gets to tap that?
Sav:
Don´t you have enough, in the one you have?
Danny:
Yeah, I do. But that doesn´t mean a man can´t dream!
Derek:
Whoever the lucky bastard is, you just know that it´s some jerk, who doesn´t deserve a girl like her! It always is, when it comes to the prettiest ones.
Sav just smiles to himself and doesn´t say anything.
5. Int. Physic´s Class. Day.
Gina and Rochelle are working together, while Veronica is working with Anya. Rochelle looks jealous, that Veronica is getting on so well with Anya again. Gina is trying to keep her mind on the job and pours a green liquid in one beaker into a red liquid in another beaker. She makes a face, since it didn´t go right.
Gina:
How can it turn purple? I think, we need to start over.
Rochelle:
Forget it. Look at the disaster unfolding before our eyes.
Gina:
Isn´t there some unwritten law against that?
Rochelle:
Am I alone in thinking, that Veronica hasn´t been telling the truth lately?
Gina:
You have a feeling too, that she´s lying all the time?
Rochelle:
Are you thinking, what I´m thinking?
Gina:
Probably not. I was debating with myself whether to get the pizza or the dish of the day for lunch.
Rochelle:
I was thinking, that it´s time we took her down a peg or two. Let her know, who´s really in charge.
Gina:
What´s the plan?
Rochelle whispers something to Gina, who looks excited. Rochelle grabs the full beaker and walks over towards Veronica and Anya. She pretends to slip and the liquid goes all over Veronica´s pants. The teacher comes rushing to, as Rochelle pretends to be hurt.
Teacher:
Is anyone hurt?
Rochelle:
Only my pride. Sorry, Veronica.
Veronica:
As long as you´re okay, that´s the main thing.
Teacher:
You need to take a shower ASAP, or it´ll burn through your skin. I´m afraid those pants are done for.
Rochelle:
I´ll buy you a new pair.
Veronica:
What am I supposed to wear?
Teacher:
I´m sure you can find something in the lost and found, that will fit you.
Veronica:
Seriously?
Teacher:
It´s that or walk around without pants on.
Veronica:
I´ll pass. Can you finish this yourself, Anya?
Anya:
Yeah. Run off and take that shower!
Veronica hurries out of there. Rochelle pretends that her knee was hurt and grimaces in fake pain.
Teacher:
Go to the school nurse and get checked out.
Rochelle:
Alright. I does hurt a lot, I´ll admit.
Teacher:
Gina, help her get down there. I´ll give you both an automatic B. Your health is more important.
Gina comes over and "supports" Rochelle (who´s doing a really good job at selling her fake injury).
6. Int. Hallway. Day.
Rochelle is now walking perfectly normal. Her and Gina high five.
Gina:
Thanks for the B, by the way!
Rochelle:
It was an unexpected bonus. If there´s a guy, then there has to be evidence on her phone.
Gina:
Do you think, there is?
Rochelle:
We can always invent one, if there isn´t. She´ll be a social pariah, before the school day is over. Even a loser like Anya will think twice, before talking to her.
Gina looks like she´s starting to have second thoughts.
Gina:
Rochelle, you know I love you, but isn´t this over the line? It´s not like she´s hurting anyone.
Rochelle:
She´s hurting Scott, if she´s cheating on him.
Gina:
Yes, but ...
Rochelle:
I´ll do all the work, if you´re growing a conscience, all of a sudden. Keep a look out for me. Knock on the door, if you see anyone, who could bust us.
They reach the door to the girl´s locker room. Rochelle sneaks inside, while Gina keeps a lookout.
7. Int. Girl´s Locker Room. Day.
We can hear the shower running from afar, when Rochelle comes in. Veronica´s clothes are strewn on a bench, with her phone next to it. Rochelle picks it up and turns it on. She looks annoyed.
Rochelle (muttering to herself):
Of course, there had to be a code! Dammit. Let´s see. Maybe it´s 1-2-3-4.
She types it in and smiles.
Rochelle (muttering to herself):
This is almost too easy!
She opens the text message app and looks delighted. She then gets out her own phone and takes a picture of the screenshot, before turning the phone off and putting it back exactly, where she found it and sneaking out again.
8. Int. Hallway. Day.
Rochelle comes back out to a worried looking Gina.
Gina:
Did you find anything?
Rochelle:
An absolute gold mine! You won´t believe, who she´s been shacking up with!
Gina:
Who?
Rochelle:
Sav.
Gina looks shocked.
Gina:
No way! She wouldn´t do that to Scott.
Rochelle:
It gets even funnier. They´re not just doing it. She´s in love with him.
Gina:
Well, if they´re in love ...
Rochelle:
This has nothing to do with love. High School is a war. In a war you take whatever advantage you can get and save the ethical questions for later.
Gina:
Can you at least keep me out of it? This doesn´t feel right.
Rochelle:
With that attitude, it´s no wonder that you´ll never be queen bee.
She grabs her phone and starts typing.
Rochelle:
Now all we have to do is sit back and watch the show unfold!
She presses send and looks pleased with herself. Gina is clearly more torn over it.
9. Int. Auto Shop Class. Day.
Scott is working on a car with Randy and Charles.
Scott:
Check the radiator hose.
Randy:
Sure, Scott.
Scott gets a text message and gets his phone out. The teacher immediately comes over to him.
Teacher:
You can text on your time. This is my time! Back to work.
Scott puts his phone away, but gets it out, once the teacher´s back in turned. He makes wide eyes, at what he sees.
Charles:
What is it?
Scott:
Some couple´ s dirty text messages to each other. Rochelle sent it to me.
Charles and Randy rush over to look on the screen and laugh, when they see it.
Randy:
That is one dirty minded girl! Do you think, she goes here?
Charles:
If she does, then I´d like to have her phone number!
Scott:
I don´t know why you sent me this, Rochelle, but thanks!
The teacher comes back and snatches the phone out of his hand.
Teacher:
You can have this back after class.
Scott:
Come on!
Teacher:
It´s not up for discussion!
Scott looks annoyed, but is still amused by what he read.
10. Int. Hallway. Day.
Veronica is now wearing a pair of sweat pants, that are at least one size too large for her. In stead of getting dirty eyes from guys, she´s now getting laughs. Anya is with her.
Veronica:
They were the only pair, that sort of fit me.
Anya:
It could be worse. At least you don´t have walk around for the rest of the day in your panties. This is just you getting to feel awkward and out of place like the rest of us.
Her words make Veronica smile.
Veronica:
I´m glad, that we´re talking again. Rochelle and Gina would have made fun of me.
She gets a text message and gets her phone out. She doesn´t even open the text message and puts it back in her pocket.
Anya:
Nothing interesting?
Veronica:
It´s from Rochelle. Chances are that it´s gossip about people I don´t know and couldn´t care less about.
Anya:
It could be someone, I know.
Veronica gets her phone out again and checks the message. She´s shocked, when she sees it.
Veronica:
This is a screen shot from my phone. How did she get this?
Anya:
Maybe while you were in the shower?
Veronica:
If Scott sees this, he´ll go ballistic!
She looks concerned.
11. Ext. Degrassi. Day.
Veronica comes outside with Rochelle.
Veronica:
What´s your deal? I thought, we were friends.
Rochelle:
I´ve tolerated you, because I had to.
Veronica:
This could ruin my life! Even if you don´t like me, why would you do that?
Rochelle:
I want Scott and you´re in my way. Dump him today, or I´ll tell him whose phone it came from and who you had that very steamy conversation with.
Veronica:
You bitch!
Rochelle:
Don´t blame me. If you´d kept your panties on, this wouldn´t have happened.
Veronica:
It´s not like I planned for it to happen.
Rochelle:
I´ll do what it takes to become queen bee and to do that, I need Scott. Trust me, it´s not that that I want to let him touch me, but if that´s the prize I have to pay, then so be it!
Veronica look likes she´s ready to give up.
Veronica:
I´ll break up with Scott, so you can have him. Is that all?
Rochelle:
Maybe one more thing. Just to make sure that your popularity is completely buried.
Veronica shakes her head in dispair.
12. Int. Hallway. Day.
Scott is talking to his friends and are laughing at the text message, that all three of them are looking at.
Charles:
I wish, I could see the entire conversation.
Randy:
If I did, I would bust a nut instantly!
Scott:
If Veronica was like this, I would never want another girl!
Randy:
Not so loud. She´s coming this way.
Veronica and Rochelle come over to them.
Rochelle:
Isn´t it the funniest thing, you´ve ever read?
Charles:
More like the hottest! Where did you get it?
Rochelle:
I saw in on Face Range and figured it deserved to be shared.
Randy:
So, you don´t know who the girl is?
Rochelle:
Not a clue. For all I know, it could be fake.
Scott:
Too bad, boys. You´ll have to fantasize about an invisible woman.
Veronica:
Can we talk, Scott? In private.
She takes his hand and leads him away. Rochelle keeps a keen eye on them, as she keeps talking to the other two boys.
Scott:
What is it?
Veronica:
Scott, I have break up with you. I´m sorry.
Scott looks angry, but tries to contain his rage, since he knows it could get him in trouble.
Scott:
Were you waiting until after my birthday to do it?
Veronica tires not to smile, now that he´s given her an out.
Veronica:
I didn´t want to ruin it for you. Let´s be honest, we´ve only been making each other miserable. Can you see us doing another year of that?
Scoot starts to calm down.
Scott:
I guess not.
Veronica:
It´s time that both of us moved on.
Scott:
There isn´t another guy, is there? If you´ve been cheating on me, then I´ll punch his teeth down his throat!
Veronica:
Nothing personal, Scott. But you´re no longer allowed to ask me that.
She walks away from him, looking a bit relieved, as he tries to deal with his frustration. Rochelle and his friends come over to him.
Randy:
What did she say?
Scott:
She broke up with me. That ungrateful little ...
Rochelle:
She isn´t worth your time, Scott. You need a girl, who is.
She starts stroking his arm and he looks somewhat interested.
13. Int. Classroom. Day.
Snake is in charge of English class for the Sophomores, which includes Veronica, Holly J, Sav, Anya, Rochelle and Gina. Veronica looks anxiously at the clock, as Gina reads her Haiku.
Gina:
My dog loves to play
With it´s tail and with it´s ball
I love my dog
Snake:
Not bad at all, Gina. Only the word "loves" is two syllables, so you were one over on the first sentence. You´ll get it right next time.
Gina sits down next to Rochelle and doesn´t look too distraught.
Snake:
We have time for a few more. Veronica, wow us with your skills as a poet.
Veronica comes up in front of the class, but looks apprehensive.
Veronica:
Mr. Simpson, I´d really rather not have to do this.
Snake:
Everyone here is learning. We easily get self conscious about our work. I´ll be the first to admit, that I´m my own toughest critic. That´s why it´s a help to have others judge, how good your work is.
Veronica:
It´s kind of controversial, you could say.
Snake:
As long as there´s no swearing, we don´t mind a bit of controversy. Do we, class?
Her classmates all make it known in their own way, that they´d rather have something controversial, than something boring. Rochelle is clearly looking forward to it with a twisted smile on her face. Veronica looks nervous and clears her throat.
Veronica:
I am a big slut
I will spread my legs for you
For a single buck
A shock falls over the other students. There´s a nervous laugh or two, but mostly stunned silence.
Veronica:
Mr. Simpson. I didn´t write that. I had another one written and someone made me read this one in stead.
A few tears start flowing down her face and what might have seemed funny is now uncomfortable for everyone. Snake especially looks concerned about her.
Snake:
Who made you read it?
Veronica:
I can´t tell you. Someone I care a lot about will end up getting hurt, if I do.
Veronica turns to look at her classmate and makes the decision to come cleans.
Veronica:
I love having sex. Am I alone in this?
Most of the boys and some of the girls:
NO! NO!
Veronica:
I don´t think, that makes me a slut. I think, it makes me a very ordinary 16 year old, who´s perhaps a little more controlled by her hormones, than most girls are. That doesn´t mean, there´s anything wrong with me. It´s not like I jump from guy to guy. I just happened to find one, who could turn me on. Before I knew it, I´d fallen in love with this awesome guy, who makes me feel loved and like I´m special to him, something my ex-boyfriend never did. Popularity and certain social rules dictate that I shouldn´t be with him, but to that I say to hell with those rules! If I have to keep up a front for the rest of my time in High School and pretend to be someone I´m not, then I´d rather be myself and unpopular. I´m done with the lies and backstabbing to get ahead. It´s not worth it and it never was.
We see Rochelle looking annoyed, that her plan backfired. Anya and Sav in particular look proud of Veronica, while others are just enjoying this unexpected bit of entertainment at the end of a long school day.
Veronica:
Here´s my real Haiku, that I came up with yesterday, right after I talked to the guy, I´m in love with. I know that it´s not a masterpiece, but it sums up how I feel.
My heart yearns for him
He, who makes me smile
The only one, I love
She gets an applause for her Haiku and looks pleased.
Snake:
That was beautiful. Veronica.
Veronica:
Thanks. I owe it all to the guy, who inspired it.
She looks relieved to be done with the lies.
14. Ext. Degrassi. Day.
Anya and Holly J come out together. Jane hurries to catch up with them.
Jane:
I need to hear every detail!
Holly J:
It was only the greatest thing, I´ve ever seen!
Anya:
A kick to the nuts to the whole concept of popularity! You would have loved every second of it!
Jane:
Why did I have to be born a year before you guys? Finally something exciting happens here and I missed it!
Anya:
I´ll give you an extended highlight package!
We cut to Sav and Eli, who come out together. Sav almost gets knocked over by Scott, who deliberately bumps into him. Scott has clearly been told about the Haiku, given how angry he looks.
Sav:
Watch it!
They shake their heads collectively, as he walks away from them in a hurry.
Eli:
That guy is such a jerk! No wonder, that Veronica girl dumped him!
Sav:
I´m surprised, they lasted as long as they did.
Eli:
I can´t help wonder, who her secret boyfriend was or if there even was one to begin with. It would make for a hell of a play.
Sav looks at him and the pieces quickly start to fall into place in Eli´s brain.
Eli:
It was you?
Sav:
Don´t tell anyone.
Eli:
Are you gonna date her for real, now that she´s single?
Sav:
I hope so.
He looks pleased.
15. Ext. Veronica´s House. Evening.
A nervous Sav walks up to the door. He rings the doorbell and waits anxiously for a few moments. It´s Veronica´s mother, who opens the door.
Sav:
Good evening, Mrs. Malone. Is Veronica in?
Veronica´s Mom:
I take it, that you´re Sav. I wasn´t expecting you to be this polite.
Sav:
I try to be, as much as I can. Veronica has told you about me?
Veronica´s Mom:
We had a long talk, when she got home.
Veronica comes running down the stairs behind her and smiles at Sav, when she reaches the door.
Veronica:
Please, mom. Just for two minutes.
Veronica´s Mom:
You can have five. I remember what it was like to be young and in love. It was nice to meet you, Sav.
Sav:
You too, Mrs. Malone.
Veronica´s mom leaves them. Veronica steps outside and closes the door behind herself.
Sav:
I wasn´t expecting that!
Veronica:
I came clean to them about some of it, including you.
Sav:
How did they take it?
Veronica:
I left out the worst parts, but they were still shocked. If I´d told them the entire truth, they probably would have called in an exorcist!
Sav:
Did it feel nice to tell them?
Veronica:
It did. I have this theory that a lot of my issues come from living a lie for so long. Anyway, everyone lies, so how does that make me a rebel?
Sav:
Are they okay with us?
Veronica:
They weren´t at first, but I think that they started to feel sorry for me, after I told them how Scott had treated me. It lowered their demands to "Someone we can be sure, won´t mistreat our daughter". They´re sending me to a School for Girls, to be extra safe.
Sav:
Don´t they know, what goes on in those places?
Veronica:
Probably not, or they wouldn´t have send their little angel there! It´ll suck at first, but it´ll also be fun to see how much I can get away with.
Sav:
I have a feeling, that you´ll fit in just fine!
Veronica:
Look, Sav, the only boyfriend I´ve had treated me like dirt and I ended up hating his guts. If we´re gonna be a couple, then you have to promise, that you won´t try to control me. It´s fifty-fifty or nothing.
Sav:
Do you promise not to manipulate me with sex? Because I could easily see that happening a lot.
Veronica:
I can promise to try my best. You can´t expect miracles.
Sav:
I won´t.
Veronica:
If you agree to my terms, then I agree to yours.
They smile at each other and kiss to seal the deal.
