WHAT IF? - SEASON 4 EPISODE 27 - ONE VISION (PART 0NE)
1. Int. Sean´s Living Room. Evening.
Sean and Emma are doing what they do a lot of the time, when they´re alone, making out like there´s no tomorrow on his couch! She starts to let her hand slide down the front of his pants, but he stops her.
Sean:
We used the last one half an hour ago, remember?
Emma:
I´m sure that it was at least an hour ago!
Sean:
More like twenty minutes actually!
Emma:
That´s still way too long!
His words do little to stop her, but he man´s up enough to do so and sits up. She looks disappointed.
Sean:
You know that I´d want to, if he had a condom, but ...
Emma:
It´s okay. One unplanned pregnancy was enough for this lifetime.
He closes his eyes and tries to get turned off.
Sean:
Name something unsexy.
She smiles to herself and decides to play along.
Emma:
Is that how all guys do it, when they need it to shrink?
Sean:
It´s one of two sure fire ways.
Emma:
What´s the other one?
Sean:
Something making violent impact with your nuts.
Emma:
Okay, something unsexy ... my mom naked.
Sean:
You´ve shown me pictures of her, when she was our age and she was kinda hot then, so ...
She makes a disgusted face.
Emma:
Eww! Please tell me you´re not picturing my mother as a naked teenager!
Sean:
Now I can´t stop myself! Try something else, quick!
Emma:
Okay ... the idea of me cheating on you!
Sean:
With who?
Emma:
Pauly Shore. I know that you´ve never been able to stand him! In fact, I think that was one of the first personal things, you ever told me about yourself.
Sean:
His career is in such a sad state now, that I more feel sorry for him! Plus, it´s too unrealistic and your mom is about to do things to me ...
Emma:
I dunno! If it has to be realistic ... Manny perhaps?
Sean:
Do you have any idea how a guy´s brain works?
Emma:
Okay ... in that case, there´s something, I´ve wanted to discuss with you. I´ve decided not to go to college, so I can stay here and we can start a family together, as soon as we´re ready to financially.
Sean opens his eyes, looks her deep into hers and gulps.
Sean:
That did it!
He looks unsure whether it´s a good thing or not.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Auditorium. Day.
Preparations are in full swing for the upcoming senior prom with streamers being hanged, speakers being put up and the auditorium as a whole being made to look much more inviting, than it usually is.
JT and Toby are having their troubles getting a speaker up on stage, with them having enough trouble carrying it between the two of them.
Toby:
Put it down! I need a break!
JT:
Alright!
They put it down and catch their breath, as Sean walks past them, easily carrying one that´s the same size on his own. They look at him jealously.
Toby:
Show off!
JT:
I could do that ... If I spent as much time in a gym, as he does!
Toby:
Like that´ll happen!
JT:
Hey, I´m stronger, than you are!
Toby:
With those spaghetti arms?
JT:
If mine are like spaghetti, then yours are like Angel Hair Pasta!
Emma comes over to them to settle the dispute.
Emma:
Easy there, boys!
Toby:
Emma, who´s stronger out of me and JT?
JT:
It´s me, right?
Emma looks like she doesn´t know what to say, that won´t hurt the feelings of either of them, but she´s saved by Sean who comes up behind them.
Sean:
You´re equally weak. It´s like comparing a snail to another snail.
Emma:
Well put!
JT and Toby look like their pride was a little hurt by their remarks.
Sean:
Do you want me to take that for you?
JT/Toby:
No, we can handle it!
They suddenly get a burst of energy and get back to work, although it´s still not going that well.
JT:
Why do I feel like I´m carrying this by myself?
Toby:
That´s funny, I feel the exact same way!
Sean and Emma can´t help laughing a little at them.
Sean:
I´m really gonna miss those guys!
Emma smiles teasingly at him.
Emma:
Is someone, who said that there was no way it would ever, ever, ever happen, starting to get nostalgic, now that he´s about to graduate?
Sean:
Maybe a tiny little bit!
Emma:
Admit it, Sean! You´re worse than I am, when it comes to these things and I´m terrible at them!
Sean:
I just want to give you the best prom I can and then it´s bye, bye Degrassi once and for all!
He looks equal parts happy and sad, that his high school days are coming to an end.
3. Int. Hallway. Day.
Emma and Manny are comparing what people wrote in their yearbooks.
Emma:
I´ve got ...
She has to count.
Emma:
Three "Have a nice Summer", two "Have an awesome Summer" and one "Have an unbelievable Summer".
Manny:
Who was that from?
Emma:
Kendra. What´s your score?
Manny:
No one wished me an unbelievable summer! I did get plenty of "See you arounds" though!
Emma:
I only got one of those!
She looks a little disappointed.
Emma:
What if they´re all glad, that they´ll never have to see me again?
Manny:
When we see them again at our tenth reunion, most of them won´t remember me neither. Toby and Liberty will and Kendra perhaps, but except for JT, you, Craig and Sean, who I´m guessing I´ll still be seeing on a regular basis, they won´t even remember my name.
Emma:
That´s so sad!
Manny:
It´s life. Now it´s time for the next chapters in our lives to start unfolding.
JT and Toby come over to them. Even JT looks a little sad, making Manny worry instantly and she gives him a hug.
Manny:
What´s the matter with you?
JT:
I miss Degrassi already!
Emma:
You of all people?
JT:
I don´t mean the classes. I mean seeing you guys and my other friends every day.
Toby:
So do I. It´s first starting to hit me now, that it´s the end of an era, we´ll never get back again.
Emma:
Do you want a hug too, Toby?
Toby:
That would help.
He gets a small hug from Emma.
Manny:
Are well all set for prom?
Emma:
If you mean prom, economy style, we are!
JT:
You too, huh?
Emma:
We´re both agreed that it´s more important for us to save up for our future together, than us blowing a lot of money on what it just one evening.
Toby:
I´ve always been glad, that Kendra is low maintenance!
Manny:
Does that mean you guys are gonna continue dating, even after you go away to college?
Toby:
We´ve agreed to see, if we can make it work. If it does, great. If it doesn´t, then we´ll be like the other sixteen billion high school couples, who ended up breaking up, because the distance was too much for them.
Manny:
That´s the right way to look at it.
Sean and Craig pass them by and Sean and Emma quickly smile at one another, as the boys walk on to their next class.
4. Int. Auto Shop Class. Day.
Sean and Craig are working on a car for their final exam. Their teacher walks around to check what his students are doing, to make sure they do it right.
Teacher:
You have twenty minutes left! Use them wisely!
Sean sees what´s wrong and smiles to himself.
Sean:
I got it!
Craig:
Got what? I don´t get it and I´m staring right at it!
Sean works his magic on the engine in no time at all and looks like he´s in his element.
Sean:
Try turning the key now.
Craig gets behind the wheel and the engine roars to life as he celebrates.
Craig:
Roar, baby, roar!
He turns the engine off again and gets out. Him and Sean high five, as the teacher comes over to them.
Teacher:
Congratulations. I´m pretty sure that´s a new record for this class.
Sean:
Does that mean, we get an A?
Teacher:
You can add a plus to that A, both of you.
He goes back to checking on the other students. Sean and Craig both look thrilled.
5. Int. Cafeteria. Day.
Sean and Craig are celebrating their A plus with a cup of hot chocolate.
Craig:
Not that I´ll ever need it for anything, but you made my parents very proud of me today. Thanks, pal!
Sean:
I´m not sure, if I should tell mine. My dear old mom could die of a heart attack from the shock!
Craig:
It´s nicer to hear you speak about them that way, than when I first met you and they were "The bastards, who couldn´t get rid of you fast enough".
Sean:
Yeah, well ... you grow up and learn to see it more from both sides. Have you forgiven your old man?
Craig:
I´m not sure, I ever will. At the same time, I think he would have been proud of the man, I´ve become.
Sean can see, that it still lies deep within him, everything that happened.
Sean:
What is it, they say? It´s not where you came from that matters, it´s where you´re going?
Craig:
What about you and Em? Where´s that going?
Sean:
We´re getting an apartment together, something bigger than the small one I have now.
Craig:
What about college?
Sean leans in to talk to Craig, so no one else can hear them.
Sean:
Don´t tell anyone, but she´s decided not to go.
Craig looks surprised.
Craig:
Emma, the girl who was practically created to go to college?
Sean:
She says, that she wants to get a job here and possibly start a family soon.
Craig:
How do you feel about this?
Sean:
I´ll go along with whatever she wants to do. If she wants a family, I´ll give her a family and if she wants to go to college, I´ll support her in that too.
Craig has to take a moment to take it in.
Sean:
It doesn´t matter to me, as long we´re still together. I´ll move to Alaska or Brazil or a mountain in Tibet for her, if that´s what it takes.
Craig:
Do her parents know this?
Sean:
I don´t think, they do yet.
Craig:
You´re not at all worried, that you´ll be the reason, she´ll feel like she ruined her life, if she decides down the line, that she made the wrong call?
Sean:
I can´t say, that I haven´t thought about it.
Craig:
It´s not just her, I´m worried about. If you build your entire life around her and she leaves you, what will you be left with?
Sean thinks about it, knowing deep down that Craig is most likely right.
6. Int. Toby´s Room. Evening.
Toby and JT are having one of their last gamer sessions, at least for a while. They´re playing Tekken and Toby is deliberately playing bad, so JT can win. He does and lifts his arms in celebration.
JT:
In your face! Or rather, your character´s face!
Toby:
Let´s play something else, you´re not to so good at.
He starts shuffling through his games.
JT:
This is another thing, I´m gonna miss.
Toby:
Don´t get me started too! It was bad enough at school today.
JT:
It just sucks, that we´ll be in different places of the country in a few months.
Toby:
I know, but we always knew it was coming.
JT:
It feels like we need some grand finale to perfectly wrap it all up, before we can move on.
Toby:
Isn´t that what prom is supposed to be?
JT:
Yeah, I guess so.
Toby picks out a game and puts it in the console.
Toby:
Those things only happen in movies. Ready for a blast from the past?
JT:
Bring it on!
The start screen for "Duck Hunt" comes on the TV and Toby gets out the "gun" from and old junk box.
JT:
Oh, you´re so gonna lose!
Toby:
The only grand finale guys like us get, is having a badly pixellated dog laughing mockingly at us!
JT doesn´t look like he entirely agrees with him.
7. Ext. Street. Evening.
Sean comes walking down the street, still thinking about what Craig said. He comes passing by a rather sexy looking and tall blonde woman, who looks like she´s hooking.
Lady:
Hey kid!
Sean:
I´m not interested!
He walks past her, but she follows after him.
Lady:
Are you sure? I could make you happy, if you´ll let me.
Sean:
I couldn´t afford the kind of happiness, you´re selling, even if I wanted.
Lady:
Come on! Let´s at least talk about it!
Annoyed, he turns around to face her. What he sees shocks him though. It´s Emma, who´s the hooker!
Emma:
That´s more like it! You know, you want to.
He has to wipe his eyes to make sure he´s actually seeing it and when he does, he sees that it isn´t Emma, just some poor unfortunate woman, who´s ended up in this situation.
Lady:
I´ll give you a blowjob for fifty.
Sean:
No thanks.
He walks off, still shocked at what he saw, even if it wasn´t real. The woman just looks annoyed at losing a customer and walks back to her spot.
8. Ext. Convenience Store. Evening.
Sean comes walking up to a convenience store, where a beggar is sitting outside, begging customers for their change. Instinctively, Sean tries to avert eye contact with him.
Beggar:
Can you spare some change, sir?
Sean turns his head to look at him and is shocked to see himself a much older man staring back and holding a paper cup with a few coins in it up to him.
Old Sean:
Please, sir. I haven´t eaten all day.
Sean shakes the cobwebs off and realizes, that it´s not in fact himself as old, it´s just some very dirty guy in his 50´s, who´s sadly ended up on the bottom of society´s rung. He gets a few coins from his jacket pocket and puts them in his cup. The beggar smiles at him.
Beggar:
Thank you so much. God bless you.
Sean:
Yeah, you too.
Sean walks into the store, confused at what´s going on.
9. Int. Store. Evening.
Sean has more or less gotten together the things he needs in his shopping basket, when he walks over to their magazine stand and browses through the magazines. He sees Emma smiling back at him from the cover of a bridal magazine, dressed as a beautiful bride.
Imaginary Emma:
Is this what´s in our future? You know, I´d love that!
He smiles to himself and keeps browsing until he sees a copy of Playboy. Emma, in a very skimpy bikini, makes herself sexy for him on the cover of it.
Imaginary Emma:
Or is it more this side of me, you like? I know that you love it, when I get down and dirty!
Sean smiles to himself, as he continues browsing to a Modern Parent magazine, where a nine months pregnant Emma is on the cover with her hands on her giant belly.
Imaginary Emma:
You know that there´s nothing I wouldn´t do for you, right? I would give up my entire life for you, if that´s what I have to do. You´re everything to me.
Sean smiles sadly to himself.
Sean (muttering to himself):
That´s what I´m afraid of.
He can´t help looking worried.
10. Ext. Joey and Caitlyn´s House. Evening.
Sean knocks on the door to the house. It´s opened by Manny, who´s dressed as a princess and is just as surprised to see him, as he is to see her dressed as princess, fake looking plastic tiara and huge pink Tutu included!
Manny:
There´s a rational explanation for this!
Sean:
I don´t need to know it!
Manny:
I´m playing princesses with my daughter. The girl is all about the princesses these days.
He looks a little relieved, that it wasn´t some weird sexual thing.
Sean:
I need to talk to you about Emma.
Manny:
What about her?
His face turns serious.
11. Int. Manny and JT´s Room. Evening.
Sean sits down on their bed and Manny sits down next to him.
Sean:
No JT here tonight?
Manny:
He´s getting some Toby time. I could tell, that his separation anxiety was kicking in again.
Sean:
Him too, huh? I don´t mean with Toby exactly, but ...
She smiles at him.
Manny:
I get what you mean. I can´t stop thinking about how much I´m gonna miss Degrassi either. But if no one ever graduated, then who´s gonna teach the next generation or make sure, that the students have access to food and a roof over their heads?
He smiles slightly back at her, but his smile quickly fades.
Sean:
Manny, I´m worried that Em is giving up too much for me. What if she wakes up five years from now and realizes that I´m the reason, she ruined her life?
Manny:
You mean about the "No College" thing?
Sean nods.
Manny:
I didn´t like it any more than you do, but since I´m not going to college either, at least not for the time being, I can´t exactly be preachy towards her on it.
Sean:
I´ve never had any delusions, that I would end up going, but college is made for someone like her. I know that she would love every minute of it, if she went.
Manny:
Is your real worry, that´s she´s blinded by love?
Sean:
I love her more than life itself, but it´s like she wants to put her future in my hands, when I´ve clearly proven, that I´m not someone you should ever, ever do that with!
Manny smiles warmly at him.
Manny:
Sean, you´re not the same angry little boy anymore, that you were when we first got to know you back in grade 7. That kid it would have been an absolute disaster to trust with anything important!
Sean nods in agreement.
Manny:
That´s not who you are now. You´ve become a lot more responsible, than most of your peers are. You´ve supported yourself and lived on your own for close to four years now. I´d say that if anyone in our class is ready for adult life, it´s you.
Sean:
That´s just normal life stuff.
Manny:
I love Emma to bits, but she´s never even tried to pay bills or had to make dinner for herself, because of how sheltered her life has been. Having someone like you to teach her these things, wouldn´t be the worst thing for her.
Sean:
Do you think she´ll feel that way, when she´s slaving away as a waitress or a receptionist, knowing that she could have made more of herself and had a job, she actually loved?
Manny:
She´s gonna follow her heart, no matter what anyone else says. That´s how she is and what it means for her to be truly happy, only she knows.
They´re interrupted by a knock on the door.
Julia (off screen):
Are you coming back to play some more soon, mommy?
Both of them smile at her innocence.
Manny:
In a minute, honey!
Julia (off screen):
Okay!
Sean:
I should go. You have much more important things to do, than listen to me whining!
Manny:
As the one, who´s known her the longest and probably knows Emma better than anyone, all I can tell you is this: When she sets her mind on something, it´s close to impossible to get her to change her mind. The best thing you can do is roll with it.
Sean:
You don´t think anything could change her mind?
Manny:
Except for you breaking up with her, I can´t think of anything.
He ponders what to do.
12. Int. Sean´s Apartment. Evening.
Montage - Music "She´s the One" by Robbie Williams.
We see Sean sitting by himself in his apartment and reminiscing about his past with Emma, as he looks over the pictures he has of them, the first being the picture that Spike took of them, when they were about to go on their first date.
We get a montage of their years together: The first time he saw her. The first time they bonded, when she found out about his dog, that he missed so badly. The dance, where she saved him from getting into a fight with Jimmy, by asking him to dance. Their first date, that was such an unmitigated disaster! When he pushed her and she broke up with him afterwards. When they got back together at her mom´s wedding and finally, when they were with their son in the hospital, right after he was born in the brief moment, where they tried what´s it´s like to be a little family.
We cut back to Sean, who looks at another picture, this one a brand new one with the two of them. She looks truly happy on it, which makes him smile, as he looks at her. He picks up his cell phone and calls someone, as the music slowly fades.
Sean:
Trapper, hi! It´s your long lost little brother!
He smiles to himself at Trapper´s response.
Sean:
It´s going alright, except for one thing. I think, that I might have to break up with Emma for her own good.
He still looks torn on the matter, though.
CLOSING CREDITS
