1. Int. Emma´s Room. Evening.
Sean is sitting on Emma´s bed with his eyes closed.
Sean:
Can I open them now?
Emma (off screen):
Okay, you can open them now.
Sean opens them and smiles widely at what he sees. It´s Emma in her prom dress and she is looking stunning! So much that his jaw literally drops.
Sean:
Oh, wow!
Emma smiles at his praise and he can´t help himself from kissing her.
Sean:
What did you do with my girlfriend?
Emma (sarcastically):
Ha, ha!
Sean:
I´m gonna be the proudest guy at that entire prom, because I get to go there with you on my arm.
Emma:
I won´t say that I did too badly either. Have you thought about, what I said? About us?
Sean:
Have you told your parents?
He tries to look her in the eyes, but she averts it.
Sean:
Don´t you think you should discuss it with them first, before you make this life changing decision?
Emma:
They´ll only tell me, that I´m making a mistake.
Sean:
Are you worried, that they could be right?
Emma:
All I know right now, is that I love you and I want to have a family with you. Why wait until I´m done with college to do that?
Sean:
I want to make sure, it´s what you want. All I want is the best for you, Emma.
She looks up at him and smiles lovingly.
Emma:
I know.
She gives him a big hug. He can´t help noticing though, that she never gave him a clear answer.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Joey and Caitlyn´s House. Evening.
The two couples, Manny and JT and Sean and Emma are having their pictures taken by Spike and Caitlyn in their fancy prom clothes. Joey, Snake, Angie and Julia are there too of course.
Caitlyn:
Just a few more, I promise!
Joey:
Don´t make a promise, you know you can´t keep, Honey.
Snake:
We´ve taken up enough of their time already.
Manny:
We would like to spend our evening at the actual prom!
Caitlyn:
Okay, you´ve done your duty. As ease, soldiers!
Emma and Sean walk over to Spike and Snake.
Spike:
Have a nice prom, Sweetie.
Snake:
The next one you´ll go to will be in college.
Emma looks a little uncomfortable at what he said, so Sean "saves her".
Sean:
I´ll make sure, that she gets home safely.
Spike:
We know, you will.
Snake:
We could have done a lot worse, as far as a son in law goes, Sean.
Sean:
It means a lot to hear you say so.
Snake:
It´s all your own achievement.
Spike:
What he´s trying to say, is that we´re proud of you.
JT and Manny come over to them.
JT:
Aren´t you proud of me too?
Snake:
I would more say, that you turned out as expected, JT!
Manny:
As much fun as this has been, we have places to be!
She gives Julia a hug goodbye.
Manny:
Do you promise to be a good girl, Julia?
Julia:
I promise.
Angie:
If she isn´t, then I can keep her in line!
Sean can´t help noticing, that Emma looks more than a little jealous of Manny.
3. Int. Auditorium. Evening.
The prom is in full swing and we´re treated to an extra surprise, since Liberty is there! She´s standing with all of her old friends and gets big hugs from especially Manny and JT.
Emma:
Since when do they allow non-graduates to come to prom?
Liberty:
Since I convinced my little brother to get a senior, that wasn´t going, to buy a ticket for me! So if anyone asks, my name tonight is Sharonda!
JT:
You always were the smart one!
Manny:
We haven´t talked in ages! How was Boston?
Liberty:
Brilliant, which is why me and Jimmy have decided to stay there.
Toby:
Can you say Yale?
Emma:
As in the best college in the world?
Liberty:
As in that precisely! Jimmy is transferring too, so we´ll be starting at the same time.
Kendra:
I still can´t believe, that I with all honesty can say, that my old lab partner went to Yale. Well done, Liberty!
Toby:
We always knew that you could do anything, if you set your mind to it!
Liberty smiles widely and Emma at the same time looks happy for her, but also a little jealous.
Sean:
Congratulations, Liberty. I guess all that hard work paid off, huh?
Liberty:
Who knows if I would have gotten there, if there hadn´t been a guy, who took me to a dance like this a few years ago, when I was at my lowest and showed me a fantastic time, even if it was just to make his girlfriend happy?
Sean:
Nah. That evening was all my pleasure.
They smile at each other.
Liberty:
So, who wants to dance? This is a prom, right?
JT:
That it is and may I ask for the first dance, miss Van Zandt?
Liberty:
If you don´t mind, Manny?
Manny:
I´ll have plenty of time to dance with him later. Go wild!
Everyone except for Sean, Manny and Emma go to dance. He feels a little like the fifth wheel right away.
Sean:
I could go for some punch. You, Em?
Emma:
Yeah, sure.
Sean:
Manny?
Manny:
My experiences with prom punch aren´t the best. I´ll pass.
Sean:
I´ll be right back.
He leaves them to get some punch. Manny and Emma take it in, that they´re at their senior prom.
Manny:
Here we are. The evening all of high school has been building up to!
Emma:
Manny, answer me truthfully. Do you think I´m making a massive mistake with Sean?
They look one another in the eyes.
We cut to Sean over at the punch stand, where he´s found out that they have five different kinds in five different colors.
Sean (muttering to himself):
What´s wrong with just having one kind?
Annoyed, he walks back to the girls. He almost reaches them but sees that Emma is talking and that they aren´t paying attention to anything except for each other. He sneaks in close enough, that he can just hear them.
Emma:
On one hand, I want to go to college, but what if I can´t hack it? Manny, I´ll be alone for the first time, like really on my own with no safety net!
Manny:
You´ll still have us.
Emma:
And what if it drives me and Sean apart? I mean how many marine biologists have you heard of, that are married to auto mechanics? None, because they don´t exist.
Manny:
I´m just afraid, you´ll end up regretting it.
Emma:
This way, I know that I´ll always have him and I won´t feel the kind of personal defeat, I would feel, if I flunked out of college. I´m not sure, if I could ever get over that. With Sean I have the safety in knowing, that my life doesn´t have to change too much.
He decides that he´s heard enough and walks over to them. Emma clams up, when she sees him coming.
Sean:
They have five different kinds. You should probably come with me.
Emma:
Can´t you choose for me?
He shakes his head at her answer.
4. Int. Auditorium. Evening. (later)
Most of the couples are dancing, but one that isn´t is Sean and Emma, who are sitting at a table with Sean quietly steaming and her not knowing why.
Emma:
Do you wanna dance?
Sean:
I´m taking a break.
Emma:
Okay, but I didn´t come here to sit at a table and be bored, while everyone else is having fun.
Sean:
Maybe it´s time you realized that life isn´t all fun and games, Emma. Have you thought about that?
He looks her in the eyes and she looks in disbelief at what he just said.
Emma:
What´s you problem, Sean? Are you trying to ruin prom for me?
Sean just shakes his head and refuses to answer her, so she stands up and grabs his hand.
Emma:
Whatever it is, we need to talk it out, but not here. We´ll find somewhere private.
He semi-reluctantly stands up and goes with her.
5. Int. Hallway. Evening.
Emma pulls Sean into an empty hallway, a little away from the party.
Emma:
Are you gonna tell me, what your issue is?
Sean:
My issue is that you´re using me as an excuse not to go to college.
Emma tries to play it off, like she doesn´t know what he´s talking about.
Emma:
What?
Sean:
I heard you talking to Manny.
Emma:
That didn´t mean anything!
Sean:
I think, it does. It means that I can´t be with you anymore.
From her reaction, it´s clear that she doesn´t want to believe, that this is really happening.
Emma:
After all we´ve been through ...
Sean:
You still couldn´t tell me the truth, could you?
Emma:
I was going to eventually.
Sean:
That just isn´t good enough. There´s nothing I want more than to spend the rest of my life with you, but I can´t do that knowing that you´ll always have doubts about me. If you didn´t, then you would have told me the truth.
She starts crying, which only makes him feel worse, than he already is.
Emma:
Is it over?
Sean:
You should go to college and chase your dreams, Emma. Don´t let an irrational fear of failing hold you back, because I know, you´ll do great. As for myself, who knows where life will take me? Have a great life, Em. You deserve better than me.
He leaves her and she breaks down crying.
6. Int. Auditorium. Evening.
Manny and JT are dancing next to Craig and Allison.
Craig:
Nice moves, JT!
JT:
I owe it all to having two left feet!
Emma comes over to them, still crying and looking very upset and they stop dancing to tend to her.
Manny:
What happened, Em? Why are you crying?
Emma:
Sean broke up with me.
JT:
What kind of guy would do that to a girl on prom night?
Craig:
Someone, who isn´t thinking straight.
Emma:
He said like it was for the last time this time.
Allison:
Wait, how many times has there been?
Emma:
One too many apparently. I´m going home. I don´t want to be here anymore.
Manny:
I´ll go with you to get your coat.
Emma:
Thanks, Manny.
Manny puts her arm around and her and they walk off. JT shakes his head at it all.
JT:
I´ll be the first to admit, that I´ve never liked her being with him, but I never thought he would do this to her.
Craig:
It has to be a mistake. He loves her.
Allison:
In that case, don´t you think you should go and find him, before she walks out the doors of his life forever?
Craig smiles at her.
Craig:
I won´t be too long.
Allison:
I´ll be right here waiting for you.
They kiss and Craig leaves her and JT in an awkward situation, since they´ve never talked before.
JT:
So, you and Craig. How´s that working out for you?
Allison:
Good. You and Manny?
JT:
Good. You know, I should ...
Allison:
I should too!
They walk off in opposite directions.
7. Int. Gymnasium. Evening.
Sean is playing pretend Basketball with himself to put his mind on something else.
Sean:
Cameron dribbles, he takes it past Barkley and Jordan is next, but he sidesteps Jordan for the big three pointer and the crowd goes wild!
He sees Craig laughing at him from the door and looks a little embarrassed as he walks over to him.
Craig:
Don´t you agree, that what you´re doing is beyond pathetic?
Sean:
It´s the only way I´m ever gonna win at anything.
Craig:
How about life? You still have a chance of winning at that.
Sean:
No, I lose again, like I always do.
Craig:
That sucks, man.
Sean:
Don´t feel too bad. If my grand dad was right, then for every winner, there´s ten losers born. I´m just in the unlucky 91 percent.
Craig:
It sucks because you´re letting your one chance to at least become someone, who feels like he´s a winner, walk out the door. What are you thinking, breaking up with Emma? She´s your soul mate, dude!
Sean:
You used to say the same about you and Manny. We saw how that worked out.
Craig:
I was wrong. Looking back, it was a kid in love, that didn´t know anything yet, who said those words. You and Emma might not be a poster couple, but you´ll never find anyone that you´ll love as much as her again. I´ve never been more sure of anything in my life.
Sean looks like he´s starting to think that he made the wrong decision.
Craig:
That girl loves you with the purest kind of love, you can find. The first love. Give her another chance!
Sean:
What if she ends up hating me, because I ruined her life?
Craig:
Then you have to make sure, that doesn´t happen, don´t you?
Sean:
How?
Craig:
Put your foot down and be a man. It doesn´t say anywhere in the "good boyfriend handbook", that you can´t do that, when it´s really important to you.
Sean:
If you happen to know where there´s a copy of that book, I´d like to buy it.
Craig:
Sorry, I don´t think it actually exists. The clock is ticking and we´re wasting valuable seconds. What´s it gonna be?
He gets a small smile out of Sean, after he´s considered it for a moment.
Sean:
Is there a chance that you could get hold of a guitar?
Craig:
I guess, I can, if I break into the music room!
Sean:
Would you be willing to do that for an old pal, who has to try to win his girlfriend back?
Craig smiles widely at his response.
8. Int. Auditorium. Evening.
Sean comes back in and looks around for Emma, but only sees JT talking to Toby and Kendra and walks over to them.
Sean:
Have you seen Emma?
They don´t exactly look like, they want to talk to him.
Kendra:
You mean our friend, whose heart you broke on prom night of all nights?
Toby:
That´s how horror movie villains are created, Sean!
Sean:
I know! Look, I made a massive mistake and I´ll have to do something big to win her back.
They look at him and JT smiles to himself.
JT:
You mean, like a grand finale?
Sean:
Call it what you want! Have you seen her?
Kendra:
She went with Manny, but we can find them.
Sean:
Make sure that she´s looking up at the stage in five minutes. Can you guys do that for me?
Toby:
Sure thing. What do you have planned?
Sean:
A desperate, last ditch attempt!
He leaves them to go and find Craig. Toby and JT smile at one another.
Toby:
I guess we are getting that grand finale after all!
Kendra:
What are you talking about, a grand finale?
Toby:
It´s just something, me and JT have been tossing around.
JT:
We won´t, if we wait here too long.
They go to find Emma and Manny
9. Int. Lobby. Evening.
We cut back to Emma, who´s in line with Manny to get her coat and still looks upset.
Manny:
I´m sorry, Em. I know this wasn´t how you pictured your prom night going.
Emma:
Maybe it´s for the best. Maybe we just are too different.
They´re interrupted by JT, Kendra and Toby, who come over to them with smiles on his faces.
Toby:
You´re not leaving already!
Emma:
Sorry, guys. My partying mood has gone out of me.
Kendra:
Before you go, there´s one thing, you need to do first.
Emma:
I´m not in the mood. I´d rather go home and get my cry on.
JT:
Usually I´d offer to drive you home, but in this one case ...
Manny:
It´s a girl thing, JT. You wouldn´t understand.
JT:
You´ve been saying that to me for years and I still don´t get what it means! Trust me, Em.
Toby:
You´ll be kicking yourself for the rest of your life, if you leave now!
Emma can´t help looking intrigued now.
Emma:
I guess that five more minutes can´t hurt too much.
The boys look pleased.
10. Int. Auditorium. Evening.
Sean is standing at the side of the stage, where the crowd can´t see them, with Craig (who has an acoustic guitar) and looks out over the crowd for Emma. He sees her come back in with Toby, Kendra, Manny and JT and takes a deep breath for courage.
Craig:
I´m only gonna ask one more time: Are you sure, you want to do this? I´m not gonna be left out on that stage looking like a fool, because you got cold feet!
Sean:
If I´m gonna make a fool of myself for anyone, who better than the girl, I love?
They fist bump on it.
Craig:
Are you sure, you remember the lyrics?
Sean:
I should, when you consider all the times we´ve have made out to the album it´s from. Do you remember how to play it?
Craig:
I toured with the Bare Naked Ladies for three months, where I heard them play it at every concert. Ergo, I´m pretty sure, it´s stuck in my brain forever!
They smile at each other, as we cut out to the stage, where the DJ is told something by Craig. He then lowers the volume and Craig starts plugging in his guitar for the song.
DJ:
Is there an Emma Nelson out there among you?
We cut down to Emma, who looks nervous at her name being mentioned like this. JT (with his arm around Manny) just smiles at it.
Emma:
What´s going on, JT?
JT:
You´ll see.
She doesn´t look sure, whether that´s a bad or a good thing, as we cut back to the stage where Sean comes out from the side and is handed a microphone by the DJ.
We quickly cut back to see Manny and Emma´s shocked reaction and Toby, Kendra and JT smiling at each other, before cutting back to the stage again.
Sean:
Emma, I know that you´re too good for me and I probably don´t deserve you. Yet, for some reason you´ve chosen to love me anyway. I love you too, more than you could ever being to imagine.
We quickly cut back to Emma, who has clearly forgotten all about why she was mad at him, before cutting back to the stage again.
Sean:
I don´t know what kind future, I can offer you and there´s lots of guys out there, who have better life prospects than I do and who would love to be with someone as wonderful as you. The only guarantee I can give you, is that I´ll never stop loving you for as long as I live.
Craig starts playing "If I Had a Million Dollars" by the Bare Naked Ladies, which only makes Emma smile wider.
Sean (singing):
If I had a million dollars
Craig (singing harmony):
If I had a million dollars
Sean (singing):
I would buy you a house
Craig (singing harmony):
I would buy you a house
Sean (singing):
And if I had million dollars
Craig (singing harmony):
If I had a million dollars
Sing (singing):
I´d buy you furniture for your house
Craig (singing):
Maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman
We cut down to Emma, who´s so happy, that she´s almost crying with joy.
Manny:
Your favorite song!
Emma:
He knows me!
JT:
Get up there and join him!
Manny:
Face it, Em. You didn´t pick him for his singing skills!
Emma laughs a little, then runs up to join them on stage.
We cut back to the stage, where they´re almost ready for the chorus.
Sean (singing):
And if I had a million dollars
Sean/Craig (singing in harmony):
I´d buy your love ...
Sean sees Emma and helps her up on stage, while still holding the microphone in the other hand. Once she´s up there, he holds it between them, so they can both sing into it.
Craig (singing):
If I had a million dollars ...
Sean (singing):
I´d build a tree fort in our yard
Craig (singing):
If I had a million dollars ...
Emma (singing):
I could help, it wouldn´t be that hard ...
We cut down to Manny and JT, who are dancing to the song with everyone else, including Toby and Kendra. She smiles ever so lovingly at him.
Manny:
She isn´t the only one, who got the man of her dreams, you know?
JT:
You mean Liberty? Yeah, she told me that her and Jimmy are doing alright!
Manny:
I meant me.
JT:
Would you have imagined in a million years, when we first met back in grade 5, that we would one day be dancing at your prom together, practically as man and wife?
Manny:
No, but there were a lot of things, I was wrong about, when I was ten. You don´t want to know, what I thought a Navy Seal was!
He has to laugh. Liberty comes over to them.
Liberty:
Is this what I´ve been missing at Degrassi, while I´ve been gone? If it is, then I almost wish, I stayed!
Kendra:
Only most of the time!
Toby:
The singers are usually better, though!
Liberty laughs.
Liberty:
There really is no other school in the world like Degrassi, is there?
Manny:
Not that I know of!
We cut to the stage, where Craig is still playing, while Sean and Emma hold each other.
Sean:
If you think this means we´re back together, you should know that it comes with one demand.
Emma:
What´s your one demand?
Sean:
That you go to college and get your dream education. I won´t take no for an answer this time.
She smiles at his "demand".
Emma:
If you say so, then I guess my only choice is to go.
Sean:
In that case, miss Emma Nelson. Will you do me the honor of marrying me, once we´re settled in our new place and ...
Emma:
Did you say what I think you just said?
Sean:
Well, do you?
Emma:
You know, I do!
Sean:
Can we agree then, that in addition to being by far the shortest, this was also our last and absolute final break up?
She nods and they kiss, as they hold each other tightly. We end the season with panning out from them to show the entire prom from above.
