WHAT IF? - SEASON 5 EPISODE 13 - DISSIDENT

1. Int. Hallway. Day.

Chantay is standing by her locker and is looking a little depressed, as she watches the video of Peter proposing to Mia at the game, that she´s already seen who knows how many times by now. Danny comes over to her and they make eye contact.

Danny:

They still haven´t accepted "I was busy watching videos on Face Range" as a valid excuse for being late for class, you know?

Chantay:

Can you guess which video I was watching?

Danny:

Either something with a monkey or Peter proposing to Mia.

Chantay:

Monkey videos are fun, but I can´t help feeling a little to blame for Peter getting his heart broken.

Danny:

With all those girls after him, I don´t think he´s missing Mia too much!

Chantay:

Which girls?

Danny:

The girls who saw the video and felt sorry for him! He´s been getting friend requests from cute girls, like you wouldn´t believe.

Peter comes over to them, looking like he´s in a great mood.

Peter:

Don´t you know that we have a test to get to?

Danny:

We´ll be there in a moment.

Peter:

Cool. That dress looks really nice on you, Chantay.

Chantay smiles at his unexpected praise of her clothing.

Chantay:

Why thanks, Peter!

Danny:

I hope you aren´t coming after my girl, now that you´re single again?

Peter:

Why would I do that, when there are so many other great girls to choose from?

He heads off to class and Danny smiles knowingly to himself.

Chantay:

He usually looks like he wants to run out of here, whenever we have a test.

Danny:

You wanna know what I think happened over the weekend?

Chantay:

What?

Danny:

He got some strange!

Chantay looks unsure of what he exactly means by "Strange"

OPENING CREDITS

2. Int. Cafeteria. Day.

Chantay, Darcy, Mia and Jane are eating their lunch together at one of the tables.

Chantay:

Have you guys ever heard the term "Getting some strange"?

Darcy:

You mean like "Getting some take out, that looked strange?". Because that happened to us over the weekend!

Mia:

What did it look like?

Darcy:

You don´t want to know, trust me!

Jane:

Darcy, I´m pretty sure that what Chantay meant by the term, was having casual sex with someone, you don´t know.

Darcy:

Oh! That´s something completely different then! Why would anyone want to do that?

Jane:

It´s exciting and kind of extra naughty, because you know that you´re not supposed to be doing it.

Her three friends look at her with surprise and she becomes self conscious over it.

Jane:

Or so I´ve read!

Chantay:

Where?

Darcy:

I´d like to know!

Mia:

Me too!

Jane smiles nervously, as she tries to come up with a good lie for them.

We cut to Peter, who´s hanging out with Danny and Derek.

Derek:

You´re not even gonna tell us, who she was?

Peter:

She was just some girl, I met on Face Range, okay?

Danny:

Does she go here?

Peter:

No, she goes to another school.

Derek:

Which one?

Peter tries quickly to come up with a lie and does so.

Peter:

She goes to Northern Tech. Are we done with the third degree now?

Danny:

And you said that she´s the same age as you?

Peter:

Yes, now if you don´t mind, I´d like to get the chance to eat my lunch while I can!

Derek:

My cousin is a Senior there. I can get her to find out more about this girl for you.

Peter:

Thanks, but no thanks. We both agreed that it was a one time thing.

Danny:

Man, I wish I´d tried that just once, before I hooked up with Chantay!

Derek:

One last question and then I´ll let you eat in peace. Was it good?

Peter:

It was the best sex I´ve ever had. Are you happy now?

Derek:

That doesn´t sound sincere!

Peter:

Well, it was. Which is why it blows a big one, that it could only be a one time thing, but that´s how life is sometimes. We can´t always get what we want, no matter how much we want it.

Peter starts eating his lunch and Danny starts to come up with an idea.

3. Ext. Van Zandt House Driveway. Evening.

Danny and Chantay are playing some one on one Basketball against each other, although he´s clearly letting her win. She sinks a shot and smiles teasingly at him.

Chantay:

You just got beat by a girl again! How does that feel?

Danny:

My pride is hurt! We´d better call it a night, before the neighbors come over to complain.

Chantay:

I should get home too. It´s getting late.

She hands him the ball and gives him a small kiss.

Danny:

I´ve been thinking ...

Chantay:

It´s that time of the month, huh?

Danny:

I´m trying to help you here, but if you don´t want it ...

Chantay:

Okay, I won´t say anymore! For the next thirty seconds, at least!

Danny:

You know that girl, Peter hooked up with?

Chantay:

Did you find out, who she was? Sorry!

Danny:

Only that she goes to Northern Tech. He also seemed really bummed out, that it was only a one night stand and like he wished it could have been more.

Chantay:

It sounds like he´s found a girl, who thinks like a guy!

Chantay suddenly gets an idea in her head, but shakes it off. Danny becomes curious.

Danny:

What were you thinking of?

Chantay:

Just ... a girl, who thinks like guy. We know one of those!

Danny:

You mean Jane?

Chantay:

The same Jane, who today showed her knowledge when it comes to terms for having casual sex.

Danny:

That doesn´t mean anything. Anyway, she has a boyfriend.

Chantay:

It didn´t stop Mia from sleeping around.

Danny:

I´ll need to see more evidence, before I believe it!

Chantay looks pretty sure in her case, though.

4. Ext. Degrassi. Morning.

Chantay arrives for school and is surprised to see Jane and Peter arriving together and laughing. She waits for them to catch up with her and they smile at one another.

Chantay:

Good morning, guys. You´re looking like a pair of eager students, who can´t get the school day started fast enough!

Peter:

For once, you´re close to right in that assumption!

Jane:

Which is the best trilogy? "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings"?

Chantay:

Lord of the Rings, any day!

Peter:

Come on! Really?

Chantay:

One has a slug monster and the other has Aragorn or whatever his name was! There´s no competition there!

Jane:

Plus the effects are so much better. Face it, Peter. You´re in the minority!

They stop walking, so Peter can make his point.

Peter:

Here´s my impression of the "Lords of the Rings" trilogy. This is the first movie.

He takes three steps back and walks three steps forward.

Peter:

This is the second movie.

He takes three steps back and walks three steps forward. Jane and Chantay can´t help giggling a little.

Peter:

Now for the big finale!

He takes three steps back and walks three steps forward, before pretending to take a ring off his finger and throwing it into the flames of Mordor. After pretending to look at it for a few seconds, he shrugs and turns to face the girls.

Peter:

It´s three movies filled with people walking from point A to point B! How can you say that it´s better than the greatest story ever told on screen?

Jane:

That´s one thing, we´ll never agree on!

Peter:

Then it´s a good thing that we agree on so many other things, isn´t it?

Him and Jane smile at each other just a little too long and none of them want to break the eye contact between them, which only makes Chantay even more suspicious and she smiles to herself.

5. Int. Classroom. Morning.

Darcy and Mia are sitting next to one another and are waiting for everyone else to arrive and for school to start for the day.

Mia:

Do you think he´ll talk to me today?

Darcy:

I can´t say. There´s no textbook on how long it takes to get over a broken heart, I´m afraid.

Mia:

I just hope that he forgives me soon, so we can start moving on.

Jane, Chantay and Peter come in, making Mia a little nervous as she looks up at them.

Jane:

Hi, guys. Kinda early, aren´t you?

Darcy:

You know me! Hi, Peter.

Peter:

Hi, yourself and to you, Mia.

Mia looks pleasantly surprised, that he talked to her.

Mia:

Hi, Peter. You look happy today.

Peter:

I have a reason to for once. Jane, do you want to sit together?

Jane:

Yeah, sure. Later, girls!

Peter and Jane take seats a little away from the other and immediately get into talking again. Chantay sits down with Darcy and Mia, who watch them with a little bit of suspicion in their eyes.

Darcy:

Since when do they sit together?

Chantay:

My guess is since they started sharing a bed.

Mia:

Oh.

It takes a moment for it to sink in for Mia and Darcy, what Chantay meant exactly.

6. Ext. Courtyard. Day.

Darcy and Mia are grilling Chantay for info.

Mia:

That can´t be true!

Chantay:

Let´s examine the evidence, shall we? Peter got laid last weekend, that much has been close to established. According to Danny, he really likes this girl, but for whatever reason, it could only be a one night stand. Like for instance if ... ?

Darcy:

That girl in question has a boyfriend?

Chantay:

You also don´t just meet someone and fall for them enough right away, that you want to start a relationship with them.

Mia:

I won´t say that it never happens.

Chantay:

We can agree though that it´s rarely, that it happens that way?

Mia:

Very rarely, yes.

Chantay:

Him and Jane have been working together for a long while, they probably know one another better or as good, as anyone else does. Yeah, she has a boyfriend, but it´s not like he ever does anything with us or she talks much about him.

Darcy:

She´s always the one who tells people to follow their heart.

Mia:

She would tell me, if anything had happened between them!

Darcy:

You mean, like you didn´t tell her, when it came to Sav?

Mia still doesn´t look convinced. Darcy and Chantay are starting to though.

7. Int. Hallway. Day.

Peter opens his locker and sighs, that he still has so much of the school day left. Darcy comes over to him and smiles at him flirtingly.

Darcy:

Hi, Pretty! Sorry, I meant Peter!

He smiles back at her in a friendly way.

Peter:

What´s up?

Darcy:

Are you doing anything tonight?

He looks interested.

Peter:

Not yet.

Darcy:

I was wondering if you want to go and see a movie or something?

Peter:

Like in a date?

Darcy:

What do you say?

Peter takes a few moments to consider it, then nods.

Peter:

Any guy would be a fool to say no to you.

Darcy:

Can I pick the movie?

Peter:

As long as it isn´t a chick flick.

Darcy:

You have my promise, that it won´t be. Pick me up at house seven o´clock?

Peter:

You got it.

Darcy:

Cool. I´m looking forward to it.

She leaves him and he smiles to himself, now that his day has been brightened a little.

8. Int. Classroom. Day.

Darcy sits down next to Chantay and Mia, who were waiting for her.

Darcy:

If they are hooking up, then he´s doing a nice job hiding it.

Mia:

He said yes?

Darcy nods.

Mia:

That´s your theory out of the window, Chantay.

Chantay:

Did he have to think about it?

Darcy:

Only for few seconds.

Chantay:

But he had to think about it, true or false?

Darcy:

True.

Chantay:

In that case, I´m nowhere near convinced.

Jane comes over to join them and they zip up on the whole subject.

Jane:

So, when are we meeting up?

Mia:

The movie starts at eight, so half an hour before?

Jane:

Sounds cool to me.

Jane looks none the wiser of what´s going on.

9. Int. The Dot. Day.

Chantay and Danny are having their usual after school hangout time at The Dot. She´s looking pleased with herself.

Chantay:

The trap is set. All we have to do now is wait to see if she´ll fall into it.

Danny:

You´re starting to scare me a little with all this snooping around!

Chantay:

It´s for their own good.

Danny:

It´s their lives and they don´t need you interfering in them. After this, I want you to promise that you´ll give it a rest for a while.

Chantay:

Even if I think they´re making a huge mistake?

Danny:

It´ll be their mistakes to make. It´s not that I mind, more that I think, if you don´t stop, then people will start avoiding us. This might come as news to you, but most people like having a private life, that´s kept private.

Chantay nods in understanding.

10. Int. Cinema Lobby. Evening.

Chantay, Mia and Jane are waiting in line to get in.

Jane:

You´re sure, we shouldn´t wait for Darcy?

Mia:

None of us told you? She has a date, that´s taking her here.

Chantay:

She was real excited about it too. I´m kind of surprised, that she didn´t tell you herself.

Jane looks glad on Darcy´s behalf.

Jane:

Is it anyone we know?

Mia:

That´s the best part! It´s Peter.

Jane tries not to look like it upsets her, but isn´t doing too good of a job at it.

Jane:

You don´t mind this, Mia?

Mia:

No, it´s nice that she can take his mind off how me and him ended.

Chantay:

Since they´re both single, it´s like killing two birds with one stone.

Jane:

Yeah, but won´t it be weird for you to see them together?

Mia:

I´d rather see him moving on with a sensible girl like Darcy, than hear about him hooking up with strange girls. I would have felt the same way, if it had been one of you two he was dating.

Chantay:

How very big of you, Mia.

Mia:

What´s important to me is that Darcy was open to me about wanting to date him and asked for permission first. Like a REAL friend would!

Jane tries not to look struck by her remark and doesn´t look too proud of herself. They see Peter and Darcy coming towards them on their date.

Chantay:

There´s the happy couple!

Mia:

Don´t they look cute together?

Jane:

Yeah, I guess so!

Jane can´t hide her displeasure with the two of them dating though.

11. Int. Cinema. Evening.

Chantay, Mia and Jane are tactically seated a few rows behind Darcy and Peter, who look like they´re enjoying the movie. As are Mia and Chantay, while Jane is having trouble keeping her concentration on the movie, since her eyes are fixed on Peter and Darcy. There is a jump scare in the movie that gets a reaction out of the rest of the movie goers and makes Darcy snuggle herself in as close to Peter as she can. She grabs his hand and seeing that he doesn´t mind holding it only makes Jane even more jealous, to the point where she can´t take it anymore.

12. Int. Cinema Lobby. Evening.

Jane comes out from the women´s room and runs into a cheery looking Darcy.

Darcy:

Hi, Jane! Are you enjoying the movie?

Jane:

It´s a little hard to follow, but I guess, it´s okay. How´s you date going?

Darcy:

I know that it´s premature to say so, but I really think he could become my next boyfriend.

Jane:

Are you sure that you´re compatible? Him, the bad boy and you, the good Christian girl ...

Darcy:

I´m much more than some stereotype and so is he!

Jane:

I didn´t mean it like that! Just that there could be other guys, who you would be more compatible with and other girls, that he would be more compatible with. Objectically!

Darcy:

Like who?

Jane:

Have you ever thought of asking Derek out?

Darcy laughs it off.

Darcy:

Good one, Jane! If you´ll excuse me, I´d rather not keep my date waiting for too long!

Darcy smiles at her and heads into the women´s room. Jane looks annoyed that she can´t just come clean about how she feels about Peter and that Darcy has now become involved in it.

13. Int. Cinema. Evening.

The movie ends and the lights come on. Jane looks relieved that the movie is over and stands up.

Jane:

Let´s get out of here.

Chantay:

What´s your hurry?

Mia:

We could stop by The Dot for a soda on the way home, if you guys are up for it?

Jane:

I´d honestly rather go home.

Chantay:

One soda won´t hurt you. It´s practically become a tradition.

Mia:

I´ll get my mom to drop you off at home afterwards, if you´ll come.

Chantay:

Doesn´t it beat having to wait by yourself, until your mom comes to pick you up?

Jane:

Alright! A fast soda!

She looks like she´d rather get it over with, so she can get home.

14. Int. The Dot. Evening.

Jane is sulking over her soda, while Mia and Chantay vividly discuss what happened in the movie, they just saw.

Chantay:

Who would have thunk that a movie about a bunch of blue aliens could be so gripping?

Mia:

Definitely in the top ten movies, I´ve seen! What did you think, Jane?

Jane:

I thought that it was very long.

Darcy and Peter come in and are met with smiles from their friends, minus Jane.

Darcy:

Was that a great movie or what?

Chantay:

We were just saying the same thing!

Mia:

Did you like it, Peter?

Peter:

It wasn´t Star Wars, but I´ll agree that it was better than most other sci-fi movies.

Darcy:

You with your Star Wars!

Mia:

It sounds like Jane is the only one of us, who wasn´t all that excited over it.

Jane:

I only said that I though it was a little long! Can we get out of here soon, Mia?

Mia:

Okay, I´ll call my mom!

Mia gets her phone out and starts looking for her mom´s number.

Chantay:

So, are you guys going on a second date?

Darcy:

It hasn´t been decided yet.

Chantay:

Why not, if you like each other?

Jane has finally heard enough and stands up.

Jane:

Peter, can I talk to you quickly about some work stuff? It won´t take long, Darcy.

Darcy:

It´s fine with me.

Peter:

Sure, if it can´t wait.

Jane:

We shouldn´t discuss it in front of the customers, so let´s go outside.

Chantay fakes looking worried over what it could be about.

Chantay:

The Dot isn´t going bankrupt, is it?

Jane:

Not that I know of! Come, Peter.

Peter follows her outside and Darcy takes Jane´s spot at the table.

Darcy:

How did she react during the movie?

Mia:

They definitely did something!

Chantay:

No doubt about it!

The three girls nod in agreement.

15. Ext. The Dot. Evening.

Peter and Jane are talking.

Peter:

I can´t date Darcy, because it makes you uncomfortable?

Jane:

How can you go out with her, as if nothing happened between us?

Peter:

You´re the one, who wanted it to be a one night stand!

Jane:

I know and it isn´t fair of me to say that you can´t see her, considering what you´ve gone through with Mia. At the same time I can´t keep pretending around her for the rest of high school, that I´m okay with it, when I´m not!

Peter:

Jane, there´s no question that I´d rather be dating you. Since I can´t, I´m gonna date who I want to and unless you tell me right now that you´ll break up with Johnny and be honest with your friends about what we did, that´s how it´ll stay.

Jane:

It´s a lot you´re asking from me.

Peter:

Not if you´re serious about wanting to be my girlfriend. I know that´s tough, but I can´t and won´t bend on this. Then I´d rather take a chance on someone like Darcy, who it´s easy with and I know that I can learn to love.

He heads back inside, leaving her to think about it. Mia comes out to join her and she tries to look unaffected.

Mia:

She should be here soon. Are you okay?

Jane:

Yeah, why wouldn´t I be?

Mia:

Because it sucks to have crush on someone, you can´t have.

Jane at first looks surprised that Mia knew, then looks relieved that she isn´t mad at her.

Jane:

Did Peter tell you?

Mia:

Chantay put the idea in my head, but seeing how you reacted to seeing him and Darcy on their date made it too obvious to ignore. How far did it go?

Jane:

Far. As in all the way. Mia, I have no idea what I´m gonna do!

Mia:

You, who always has the answers for everyone else?

Jane:

It turns out that it isn´t so easy, when it´s myself!

Mia:

You have three choices. Johnny, Peter or neither. What´s it gonna be?

Jane thinks it over for a moment, before making a decision that makes her smile. Mia gets the meaning of it without it needing to be said.

16. Int. The Dot. Evening.

Jane comes back in and walks right over to where her friends are sitting.

Jane:

Darcy, I´m sorry, but I don´t want you to date Peter anymore! It´s not that I don´t hope you´ll find a nice boyfriend soon, because let´s face it, it´s become a bad running joke that you can´t find a guy, when you´re as pretty as you are! It´s just can´t be Peter, because I really like him and I want to be the one to date him. I think he wants to date me too.

Peter:

What about Johnny?

Jane:

He isn´t you.

They smile at each other. Darcy and Chantay give up their acts too, now that Jane has.

Darcy:

Sorry. Peter. I don´t think we should date anymore, when Jane feels this way.

Peter:

That´s alright, Darcy. I would have had to turn you down anyway.

He stands up and him and Jane kiss. Chantay looks proud of herself, that she led them together.

Chantay:

Not to brag, but I deserve at least some credit for this happy ending!

Darcy:

Which colleges have you applied to?

Chantay looks surprised at the question.

Chantay:

Why are you asking me that right now, when we have something so much more exciting to talk about?

Darcy:

No offense, but I want to make sure that we don´t go to the same one. I love you, but it´s close to impossible to have a private life with you as a friend!

Chantay nods in agreement.
