WHAT IF? - SEASON 5 EPISODE 19 - NEARLY LOST YOU
1. Int. Boy´s Dressing Room. Day.
KC is getting dressed after gym and squirts some deodorant under his armpits. Dave (Wesley´s friend, who we met briefly in an earlier episode) is almost finished getting dressed nest to him.
Dave:
Is that the final touch, that sends the girls over the edge?
KC:
Wanna try it, to see if it works?
Dave:
I have my own. Seriously, what´s your secret, man? You have like ten girls chasing you around all the time!
KC:
I don´t know if there´s any trick to it.
Dave:
You´re lucky, dude! The rest of us can´t even get one girl to like us and you have so many that you can pick and choose between them.
KC:
It´s not the kind of blessing, you think it is. Especially when you have a girlfriend, who´s on the warpath!
Dave:
You mean Jenna? She always seemed cool to me!
KC:
She used to be. Now I´m not sure what she´s turning into!
KC looks worried that he could have created a monster.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Hallway. Day.
Holly J is with Anya, who´s in her brand spanking new Power Squad uniform, that looks great on her. Holly J isn´t looking too into what Anya is suggesting to her though.
Holly J:
Anya, you know that I´d love to help you out, but auctioning myself off to the highest bidder wasn´t on my to do list, when I woke up this morning!
Anya:
It´s only one date and if it turns out to be terrible, then I´ll make it up to you, I promise! It´s just that we only have one girl, who´s signed up for the charity auction so far and I could really score some brownie points with the girls on the squad, if I got an attractive one like you to do it! Pretty please with sugar on top?
She looks at Holly J so pleadingly that Holly J gives in.
Holly J:
Alright, but I´m expecting an extra large Christmas present from you this year!
Anya:
Who knows? You could end up meeting your future husband through this.
Holly J:
Sure and if the makers of "South Park" are right, the world could be taken over by crab people! That doesn´t mean one is more likely to happen than the other!
Anya:
It´ll be good for you to go out on a date again! How long has it been?
Holly J:
Too long! Meanwhile my boy crazy 14 year old cousin has gone through more of the male part of her species in four months of her freshman year here, that I have in my entire lifetime!
Anya:
Are your parents still making you keep an eye out on her?
Holly J:
I gave up weeks ago. Trying to keep up with her life makes trying to outrun a formula one car with two broken legs sound easy!
Anya looks like she believes her.
We cut to KC and Jenna, who are coming down the hallway together.
KC:
Are you gonna stay mad at me all day over this?
Jenna:
I think that I have a right to!
KC:
For the last time, they´re collecting money to help out at my group home among others like it. How was I gonna say no to her, without feeling like a selfish jerk?
Jenna:
Okay, maybe I´ll put myself up for auction too then, if it´s so important to you.
KC:
Don´t be like that!
Jenna:
I think, I will do it, just so you can experience seeing the one, you thought cared about you, getting sold off to someone else! Newsflash: You´re gonna hate it!
KC gives up trying to argue any more with her and in stead tries to come up with an idea.
3. Int. Gymnasium. Day.
The freshmen are having PE and are warming up, which also means that it´s a good chance for single boys like Dave to check out what the girls in his grade look like in their gym clothes. KC is trying his best not to check them out, but he is human after all. Connor is the only one of the three, who can help himself.
Dave:
This is the best time of the week!
Connor:
You like gym that much?
KC:
Connor, he means because of the girls!
Connor:
They´re always there! You see them every day.
Dave:
Yes, but they usually have more clothes on, than they do right now!
Connor gets what he means or at least pretends to.
Dave:
Who of these honeys are you hoping will win that date auction for you, really?
KC:
I don´t care who wins it.
Dave:
Yeah, right!
Connor:
It´ll probably be Harriet Sinclair.
Dave and KC look over at her and we get our first look at the latest member of the Sinclair clan to join the series, the pretty and well built redhead Harriet Sinclair, who smiles back at them, when she notices that they´re looking at her.
Connor:
Add that her family has money to spend to how she seems to like you and all probability points to her.
Dave:
That wouldn´t be too bad, would it?
KC:
She doesn´t have the best reputation.
Dave:
That´s exactly what I mean! It´s a sure thing with her.
KC:
I don´t want a sure thing, I wanna get it over with! Which reminds me, I need one of you to put in the highest bid for Jenna.
Connor:
Sure, if you think I can get her for three bucks.
Dave:
It´s still more than I have!
KC:
Seriously, guys?
Dave:
Next time, try not asking us in the middle of December!
Connor:
You could pull out. Then she would too.
KC:
That´s not an option, I can consider.
He doesn´t look like he´s looking forward to it.
4. Int. Lobby. Day.
Anya is the auctioneer for the charity date auction and is on stage with a couple of the other girls from the Power Squad, who are also in their uniforms for the occasion. There´s lots of students there to see it, among them Sav, who has his arm around Mia and smiles proudly up at her. She smiles proudly back at him. The ones to be auctioned off, who are split into boys and girls on separate sides of the stage, don´t all look too keen on what´s about to happen though. One of them is Jenna, who looks down at a couple of pretty scary looking senior guys, that have their eyes on her. Holly J sees the chance to mess with her and can´t help herself.
Holly J:
Don´t worry. They´re probably not out scoping for their next virgin to sacrifice!
Jenna:
What do you mean "next"?
Holly J:
Oh, nothing. I´m sure, they´re just rumors!
Jenna gulps and looks scared, while Holly J smiles to herself.
We cut back to Anya.
Anya:
Welcome to our charity date-off. We hope to raise a lot of money to help underprivileged kids in the city have the kind of Christmas they deserve this year, so I hope you brought plenty of money today! First up is a personal friend of mine. Holly J Sinclair. Let´s hear it for her.
The crowd applauds and Holly J comes up to join Anya.
Anya:
Tell them a little about yourself, Holly J.
Holly J:
I´m from a wealthy family. I´m close to a straight A student and I don´t know what else to say, really.
Anya:
Let´s get the first bid of the day. Do I hear 20 dollars?
A tall and athletic looking guy with teeth so white that he could star in a toothpaste commercial raises his hand. Holly J seems to like him as an option.
Anya:
We have 20! Can I get 25 from anyone?
A much more normal looking guy, who´s not nearly as attractive as the first one raises his hand. This doesn´t seem to suit Holly J though.
Anya:
We have 25! Do I hear 30?
The athletic looking guy raises his hand again, to Holly J´s relief.
Anya:
30 from the guy with the whitest teeth in the room! Anyone for 35?
The normal looking guy shakes his head, which pleases Holly J.
Anya:
30 going once, twice, sold for 30 dollars! Next up is KC! He´s probably a little nervous so give him a hand, everyone!
Holly J comes down to join Sav and Mia, who are applauding KC with the rest of them.
Mia:
That´s what I´d call lucky!
Holly J:
You´re not the only one!
Sav:
Anya is a total natural at this!
Holly J:
Tell me about it!
We cut back to the stage, where KC is with Anya. There´s lots of girls his age who have their saved up pocket money ready to bid on him.
Anya:
So KC, what´s special about you?
KC:
I don´t know if there´s anything special about me. I´m in the gifted class, but apart from that I´m just a nice, ordinary guy.
Anya:
A nice, ordinary guy, just like my mom wants me to find one of! What do you say girls? Do I hear 20?
14 year old girl #1:
I bid twenty!
14 year old girl #2:
I bid twenty five!
14 year old girl #3:
Twenty five and one penny!
14 year old girl #1:
Thirty!
14 year old girl #2:
Thirty five!
14 year old girl #3:
Thirty five and one penny!
We quickly cut to Sav, Mia and Holly J who are following the auction with interest.
Mia:
That one girl is really a cheapskate!
Sav and Holly J nod in agreement, as the prize keeps going up.
14 year old girl #3:
Forty five and one penny!
Harriet:
Eighty!
Everyone´s eyes turns to look at Harriet, who´s enjoying the attention.
Anya:
Going once, twice, sold for eighty dollars! Well done, KC! That´ll be a hard one to top!
KC smiles nervously at Harriet, as he gets down from the stage.
Anya:
Next up is Jenna. Let´s hear it for her!
Jenna gets a nice little applause, as she walks over to join Anya. She´s still looking very nervous though.
Anya:
So Jenna, what made you decide to volunteer yourself for this?
Jenna:
Ehm ... I don´t really know. It just seemed like fun, I guess.
Anya:
Are you a fun girl yourself, Jenna?
Jenna:
I´d like to think that I am!
Anya:
Okay, let´s start with twenty.
There´s a deafening silence, since no one wants to bid on her. Jenna is so embarrassed that she looks like she´d rather run away than anything else.
Gracie (in a bad attempt at making guy´s voice):
Here!
Anya:
We have twenty! Anyone else? Going once, twice, sold for twenty dollars!
Jenna comes down from the stage and Gracie comes over to her. Jenna looks grateful that she saved her from further embarrassment.
Jenna:
Thanks.
Gracie:
We´ll split the dif, okay? 20 bucks is a lot of moolah for me.
Jenna:
It´s a deal. I guess we´ll be going on date then!
Gracie:
What do you want to do on it?
Jenna:
Make sure that KC isn´t having too good of a time with Harriet Sinclair!
Jenna clearly doesn´t like the idea of them going out.
5. Int. Mall. Evening.
KC is waiting for Harriet to show up and doesn´t see Jenna (wearing one of Gracie´s hoodies as a disguise) along with Gracie, watching them from afar.
Gracie:
Maybe she´s blowing him off.
Jenna:
She´s just being fashionably late, I bet!
Gracie:
It looks like you´re right.
We cut to KC, who´s met by Harriet, that´s dressed more casual than you would think for a rich girl going on a date. It fits with what he´s wearing though, since he doesn´t own any fancy clothes.
KC:
Hi, Harriet. I was worried that I would be underdressed.
Harriet:
I already know much more about you, than you think.
KC:
Then you also know that I can´t afford to take you anywhere expensive.
Harriet:
That´s alright. I´m paying for everything tonight. There are advantages to dating a Sinclair, you know?
KC:
I won´t say no to that!
Harriet:
We´d better get going. We have a reservation.
They walk off together. The jealousy can easily be read all over Jenna´s face.
6. Int. Little Miss Steaks (Floor Area). Evening.
Holly J is on her date with Troy, the guy who won the auction for her. What she´s finding out fast though is that he´s just as boring, as he´s good looking and she can´t wait for their food to get there fast enough.
Troy:
You should see some of the pictures my dad has shown me of patients, he´s had in his dental practice´over the years! Really unbelievable stuff!
Holly J:
I´m sure, it is, Troy!
Troy:
I can show them to you sometime, if you play your cards right.
Holly J:
No, that´s okay!
Troy:
Show me your teeth.
Holly J looks a little uncomfortable at his request, but still opens wide. He inspects them.
Troy:
I knew it! You have a perfect overbite! You also have a cavity in one of your corner teeth. And one more in the one next to it!
She closes her mouth again and tries not to look too creeped out by him.
Holly J:
Thanks for telling me!
Troy:
You´re probably not brushing your teeth correctly. What you need to do is ...
He opens his mouth to really show off his teeth and seeing that he´s about to put on a demonstration for her, she sees the need to put a stop to it.
Holly J:
What´s keeping our food, huh? I´m gonna go and ask them!
Troy:
I´m sure that if we called one of them over here ...
Holly J:
That could take forever! Let me deal with it!
Troy:
Don´t be long!
He shoots her his toothpaste smile, but it´s not working as well on her anymore.
7. Int. Little Miss Steaks (Bar Area). Evening.
Holly J comes up to the bar.
Holly J:
Can you tell me what the status is on our food?
The bartender turns around and she´s surprised to see that it´s the other guy, that bid on her.
Kenny:
No, but I can ask for you.
Holly J:
Say, aren´t you the other guy, who put a bid in for me today?
Kenny:
You have a good memory.
He goes to check and she looks over at Troy. He´s busy admiring his own picture perfect smile in the glow of the silverware, making her shake her head at him. Kenny comes back to her.
Kenny:
They apologize for the wait, but say that it´ll only be few minutes now.
Holly J:
Thanks.
Kenny:
How´s your date going?
Holly J:
Awful! I´ve met some boring and self obsessed people over the years, believe me, but he puts all them to shame and then some! I can´t wait for it to end.
Kenny:
I´m sorry to hear that.
Holly J:
There´s not the slightest bit of you that´s enjoying this, considering that he beat you to me?
Kenny:
I only put in a bid to press the prize up. It was for a good cause, after all.
Holly J looks a little disappointed.
Kenny:
If I was gonna ask you out, I wouldn´t need the excuse of an auction to do it.
Holly J looks like she´d rather be on a date with Kenny now, than with Troy. She doesn´t even notice her cousin coming in with KC by her side.
8. Ext. Parking Lot. Evening.
Jenna and Gracie are scoping the place out and are looking through the windows.
Jenna:
Dammit! I can´t see them!
Gracie:
We could inside?
Jenna:
And order what? A glass of tap water? That´s all I can afford in there!
Gracie:
What else do you suggest we do?
Jenna:
We´ll just have to wait for them to come out.
Gracie:
That could be hours from now! I´m going home.
Jenna:
You´re not leaving me here alone, are you?
Gracie:
Jenna, it´s important that you listen to me right now. This whole jealous girlfriend thing, it´s only going to lead to him breaking up with you.
Jenna:
I know, but I can´t stop it!
Gracie:
You need to take a long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself, if this is who you want to be. A boy crazy girl like Harriet, who allows her standing with boys to control who she is. Are you coming with me?
Jenna sees that she´s right and nods.
9. Int. Little Miss Steaks (Floor Area). Evening.
KC is enjoying his steak and is eating it fast, since it´s clearly the best food he´s had in a long time. Harriet is taking her time with hers.
Harriet:
Take it easy KC, it´s not a contest!
He stops eating and wipes his mouth his napkin.
KC:
Force of habit, I guess.
Harriet:
I think, I know the real reason why.
KC:
Do you now?
Harriet:
It´s because whenever you get something good for dinner at that group home, you live in, you have to eat fast, if you want to get seconds.
KC looks a little surprised that she knew, but takes it with a smile.
KC:
Good guess. I didn´t think, you knew where I live.
Harriet:
It´s why I find you so fascinating, KC! You´re like, the ultimate underdog!
KC:
If you say so.
Harriet:
No, I mean it! Your story is truly inspirational, that with a dad who´s been in jail for last many years and a drug addict mom, who they had to take you away from, you´ve still made it to the gifted program at Degrassi! They could make a Hallmark movie about your life and I´d gladly watch it!
KC gets a bit uncomfortable that she brought it up.
KC:
You know about that part too, huh?
Harriet:
I did my homework on you a long time ago, KC. Which is why I have a proposal for you.
KC:
Harriet, you´re nice and all, but I´m with Jenna.
Harriet:
What can she give you, that I can´t? The answer is nothing. There´s whole lot of things I can afford to give you however, that there´s no way she could afford to give you. Say for instance nice meals like the one we´re eating now or perhaps even a chance to move into a place of your own.
KC looks her in the eyes and can see that she means it. He can´t help being a little intrigued by her offer.
KC:
Okay, I´ll hear you out, but that´s it!
Harriet:
That´s more like it!
She smiles to herself.
We cut to elsewhere in the restaurant, where Holly J is at her wit´s end waiting for her horrible date to come to an end!
Troy:
I´m still not sure which dentist school to go to. I mean, there´s so many great ones out there, that it´s impossible to choose!
Holly J:
The exact same problem keeps me awake at night!
Troy:
It does? I knew that I couldn´t be the only one!
Holly J:
No, it doesn´t, Troy! Look, you have some fine and very white teeth and if you met a girl, who has the same kind of aspirations that you have to be a dentist, I´m sure it would work out great for you guys! This however, it isn´t working out for me, sorry!
He looks disappointed.
Troy:
Was it something I said?
Holly J:
It was a lot of the things you said, but not just that. It´s clear to me that we aren´t compatible and it´s better that you tried finding someone else. Preferably someone who´s as interested in their teeth, as you are.
He looks to take the rejection well.
10. Int. Little Miss Steaks (Bar Area). Evening.
Holly J comes up to the bar, where Kenny is wiping off some wine glasses. She smiles at him and takes a seat.
Holly J:
Don´t you have a machine to do that for you?
Kenny:
Don´t you have to go home?
Holly J:
I need something to take my mind this evening!
Kenny gets a beer from one of the coolers and opens it for her, before putting it in front of her.
Holly J:
Thanks. I don´t even know your name.
Kenny:
It´s Kenny and you still have to pay for that!
Holly J:
Can I at least get a glass for my beer then?
Kenny:
You women are always so demanding!
He gets her a glass and they smile at one another.
Kenny:
I´m going out to a club after work, if you want to come. It´s usually pretty kicking.
Holly J:
That depends. Is it a date?
Kenny:
I told you that I wouldn´t need some charity auction as an excuse to ask you out, didn´t I?
She can´t help being fascinated with this guy and looks into the idea.
11. Int. Hallway. Morning.
Holly J is talking to Anya, Sav and Mia about the events of the day before.
Anya:
Was it hard for you to learn the routine too, Mia?
Mia:
Not really. I was used to it from Junior High.
Anya:
Lucky for you! I hadn´t done any gymnastics before this, since I was nine!
Sav:
You can discuss it later. I want to hear how Holly J´s date with "Bright White" went.
Holly J:
The first half of the evening was a horrible disaster and the second half was a total blast! Troy turned out to be incredibly self involved.
Anya:
I´ll think of a way to make it up to you.
Holly J:
You don´t have to. Because after I dumped his butt for Kenny, the evening took a much more positive turn.
Mia:
Who´s Kenny?
Holly J:
A very interesting guy! You might remember him as the other guy, who put in a bid for me at the auction.
Anya:
So it did work for you after all, just not in the conventional way?
Holly J:
You could say that.
Sav:
Is this a guy, you´ll be seeing again?
Holly J:
I think, that´s safe to say.
She smiles to herself.
12. Int. Foyer. Morning.
Jenna arrives for school and KC immediately comes up to her.
KC:
I need to talk to you, Jenna.
She looks like she´s bracing herself for the worst and looks him in the eyes.
Jenna:
This is the part where you break up with me, isn´t it? I knew that it was too good to be true!
KC:
No, I´m not! What gave you that idea?
Jenna:
Come on, KC! Harriet is both prettier than me and she has money, the likes of which I can only dream of. There´s no good reason why you shouldn´t choose her over me.
KC:
There´s only one reason, I need. That I like you, not her.
She looks relieved and smiles at him.
Jenna:
Do you really mean that?
KC:
With her, I´ll be another one of her conquests that she plays with, until she loses interest. I don´t like girls, who do that sort of thing. I prefer girls like you. Girls who are honest about who they are and I know, I can trust.
Jenna:
Even when I´m being irrational and jealous?
KC:
I wouldn´t mind, if you turned it down just a tiny bit!
Jenna:
I´ll try to. I was so sure, you were going to break up with me today!
KC:
How many times do I have to tell you? There´s only one girl here, I feel that way about and even if she doesn´t think she´s as pretty as some of the other girls, we go to school with, she is in my eyes.
She looks glad. He smiles back at her.
