WHAT IF? - SEASON 6 EPISODE 3 - IT´S TRICKY

1. Int. Degrassi Hallway. Day.

Declan is enjoying the sights of all of the new girls at his school with a small smile on his face. Fiona comes over to him and smiles at him teasingly.

Fiona:

Are you on the hunt already?

Declan:

With that many pretty girls here, what guy my age wouldn´t be?

Fiona:

Those in relationships?

Declan:

Even they do their share of window shopping, trust me!

Fiona:

I won´t lie and say that I don´t either. Some of those Power Squad girls ... wow!

Now it´s Declan, who smiles teasingly at Fiona.

Declan:

It doesn´t make you a bad person. No one says that you can´t gather your appetite out on the town, as long as you eat at home.

Fiona:

What about you? Is there anyone, you have your eye on?

Declan:

Not yet, I need to get to know a girl a little first, before I can make up my mind on it.

Fiona:

That´s new for you!

Declan:

At Vanderbilt it wasn´t a problem, because I already knew all I needed to know about the girls, I could have been interested in there, for better or worse. Here the only one I know so far is you and we´re not going down that path!

She nods in solid agreement.

2. Int. Other Degrassi Hallway. Day.

Declan and Fiona are walking to their next class.

Declan:

How did you do it, when you started here? Getting to know new people, I mean.

Fiona:

With me it was kind of blind luck. that Bianca saw me crying in the bathroom and took pity on me. Thanks to her, I was introduced to Imogen right after and the rest is history.

Declan:

How is Bianca doing, by the way?

Fiona:

She´s so tired most of the time from the radiation treatments, that she can barely do much of anything these days.

Declan:

I feel so bad for her. No one should have to live through something like that, least of all someone who´s our age.

Fiona:

I feel for her too, but we can´t do much more than try to be the best friends to her that we can, Immy and I.

They come up to a poster, that Declan notices and looks interested in.

Declan:

This could be something. Tryout´s for the next school play today.

Fiona:

If you want to meet new people, it´s probably not the worst route to go.

Declan:

You know what, my dear sister? I believe, you could be right!

He smiles to himself.

OPENING CREDITS

3. Int. Emma´s Old Room. Evening.

Fiona is paying Bianca a visit and they´re lying next to one another on Emma´s old bed.

Fiona:

At least you´ve gotten this sweet room out of it. Beats living in the basement, huh?

Bianca:

I guess so. It´s mostly because it´s easier for me to get up and down the stairs up to here, than those down to the basement.

Fiona:

It´s that bad, huh?

Bianca:

Every one of those radiation treatments make me feel, like I´ve just done 5 rounds in a UFC ring against two Ronda Rousey´s! I wouldn´t wish this on my worst enemy.

Fiona:

At least Dallas comes around to keep you company, right?

Bianca smiles a little to herself.

Bianca:

It´s incredible how considerate he´s been. I always thought that guys like him were all about themselves, but he´s proving himself to be much more than that. You´re probably still in heaven right now, aren´t you? Basking in that first big love glow with the girl of your dreams.

Fiona:

I should be, but I´m not.

Bianca:

Why?

Fiona:

B, I´ve known that I only like girls that way, not boys, since I was around eleven years old and since then, there´s been one day that I knew would have to come eventually, when I someday found my first girlfriend/girlfriend, that I´ve been dreading like crazy. Can you guess which one it is?

Bianca:

Coming out to your parents?

Fiona:

I´m such a walking cliche, aren´t I?

Bianca:

It´s a rite of passage for all gay people, I´m afraid.

Fiona:

I know, but I feel like I´ve hit them with so much already these past years. I don´t want to be the problem child, that there´s always something new going on with, that they then have to deal with as parents.

Bianca:

Look, no one says that you have to tell them right away. Take your time.

Fiona:

That´s just it. I don´t know if I can much longer. Now they´ve gone and fixed me up on a date with one the "Most Eligible Bachelors" in town for this Friday, or at least that´s what my mom has called him.

Bianca:

So, tell them that you can´t go and why. If there´s one thing life has taught me so far, it´s that even if the truth isn´t the easiest to tell someone sometimes, it´s still the best policy in the long run.

Fiona:

Right now, I just want to get through the short run! Friday also happens to be mine and Imogen´s one month anniversary.

Bianca:

Which I´m guessing that she has made plans for?

Fiona nods and looks annoyed over her problem.

4. Int. Hallway. Day.

Imogen is explaining her plans for their anniversary.

Imogen:

I´m thinking that we start with dinner at my house, then we go to the movies and then back to my house for a little sleepover? Does that sound good to you?

Fiona:

I couldn´t imagine a better way to spend my evening!

Imogen looks pleased.

Fiona:

You´re sure that your dad won´t mind me sleeping over?

Imogen:

You´ve slept over lots of times already!

Fiona:

I just meant that since we´re now ... more than friends?

Imogen becomes a little shy.

Imogen:

He doesn´t actually know about that part yet. I´ll tell him soon, I promise, but ...

Fiona:

Immy, it´s okay! It´s not like I´ve told my parents either. We´ll get to that part, when we´re ready.

They smile at one another.

5. Int. Auditorium. Day.

It´s try-out´s time for the upcoming play. Declan is trying out with Mia as his acting partner, while Eli, Marisol and Clare watch them.

Declan:

Bella, I know that it´s insane for me to think this way, but I can´t stop myself!

Mia:

What about Mary? Don´t you love her?

Declan:

I´ve never felt this way for her, that I feel about you! I love you, Bella!

Mia:

You love the idea of being with me! You don´t even know who the real me is!

Declan:

Then give me a chance to learn!

Eli, Marisol and Clare applaud them.

Eli:

That was great, you guys! Very convincing.

Eli turns to talk to Clare and Marisol.

Eli:

They´re the best couple, we´ve seen so far by a mile.

Mary:

Are we all agreed then, that they´re our Bella and Edward?

Eli:

What do you say, Special Consultant?

Clare:

There´s no competition.

Eli:

Congratulations! You two will be the leads in our original production of "The Outsider"!

Mia and Declan both look pleased.

6. Int. Hallway. Day.

Holly J comes out from the auditorium, where Declan is waiting for her.

Declan:

Hi, Holly J.

Holly J:

I heard a rumor that you were coming here, but I didn´t want to believe it, until I saw it with my own eyes.

Declan:

Did they cast you for a part?

Holly J:

Yeah, I´ll be playing Mary, Edward´s unlucky girlfriend, who gets dumped in the end for Bella.

Declan:

Congratulations. It´s been a long time, since we last talked.

Holly J:

Not long enough, Declan!

Declan:

What did I do now?

Holly J:

Please, like I need to tell you!

Declan:

I really don´t know!

Holly J:

The last time you and Fiona came to visit, where you "accidentally" walked in on me in the shower?

He smiles to himself, but she isn´t finding it as funny.

Declan:

Now that you say it, I do kind of remember. What were we, 13-14?

Holly J:

It was last year!

Declan:

Are you sure? I don´t remember it that way!

Holly J:

Positive! Now if you´ll excuse me ...

Declan:

Okay, I apologize! Can we be friends now?

Holly J looks him defiantly in the eyes.

Holly J:

That´s the thing with you, Declan. You can never just be friends with a girl. I don´t know a more than a fraction about what your escapades when you were at Vanderbilt were like, but I know enough from people I know there, to know that I don´t feel like being next number on your list! Have a nice day!

She walks past him and up the hallway. Her turning him down this way only looks to have made him even more interested in her.

7. Int. Restaurant. Evening.

Declan and Fiona are celebrating with a nice dinner at an upscale restaurant. Declan is enjoying a serving of oysters, that he eats right from the shell.

Declan:

Not bad, I gotta say!

Fiona:

I told you that Toronto has it´s share of great restaurants, if you know where to look for them.

Declan:

I´m liking this place more with every day!

Fiona smiles at him knowingly.

Fiona:

Who´s the girl and why won´t I like her?

Declan:

I´m working on something with a long shot, you could say..

Fiona:

You can at least tell me her name?

Declan:

Holly J. Sinclair.

Fiona doesn´t look all that pleased with her brother.

Fiona:

Can´t you find someone else?

Declan:

What´s wrong with her?

Fiona:

She´s a back talking bitch, for one!

Declan:

Haven´t you punished her long enough?

Fiona:

I´m still alive, aren´t I?

Declan:

So, she made a mistake, when you first moved here. I´ve forgiven you for dozens of them and you can´t find it in your heart to forgive her for making one?

Fiona doesn´t like it, but can see that what he says makes sense.

Fiona:

You´re never going to get her in bed with you anyway. She´s never liked you, ever since we were little.

Declan:

And there in lies the challenge! You don´t think that at Vanderbilt, I could get almost any girl I wanted, thanks to my looks and last name alone?

Fiona:

I know, you could.

Declan:

Even the ones I couldn´t with at first, I could eventually, if I wanted it bad enough. There was no challenge in it anymore. However ... if I can get Holly J in bed with me, now that would be an achievement, wouldn´t it?

Fiona smiles to herself at his plan.

Fiona:

That´s your plan, huh? Love her and leave her?

Declan:

That´ll teach her to treat you that way! Anyway, she´s a Sinclair. We can call it the first payment for their thousands upon thousands of sins from the past.

Fiona:

You are so evil!

Declan:

In this case, I see myself as a crusader for all of those, they´ve screwed over. Our family included, let´s not forget that.

They toast on it.

Declan:

Have you thought about what to do with your own situation?

Fiona:

I´m gonna have to lie to one of them, either mom or Imogen. I guess, I could pull out the old sick family member excuse.

Declan:

Before you do, try hearing me out. I have an idea, that would mean that you don´t have to lie to anyone and can still celebrate your anniversary with your quirky little girlfriend in whatever style, the two of you feel like.

Fiona:

Do tell, dear brother.

She smiles to herself and looks interested.

8. Int. Classroom. Day.

The Juniors are having art class and everyone is painting their own picture. Anya is sitting next to Blue and while she tries her best, her best in nowhere near as good as his, that looks like something a pro made. Fiona comes in and is late.

Fiona:

Hi, sorry I´m late! I have a note from the principal, that explains it.

She hands the note to the teacher, who looks it over.

Teacher:

That´s okay, Fiona. Find an empty seat and get started.

She does and takes an empty seat next to Holly J, to Holly J´s surprise.

Fiona:

Hi.

Holly J:

You´re talking to me again?

Fiona:

Oh, that? It was so long ago! How have you been?

Holly J:

Pretty good. You?

Fiona:

Great!

Holly J looks glad for her.

Fiona:

Well, except for this one thing.

Holly J:

Is it something I can help with?

Fiona:

I´ve made big plans with my special someone for Friday and my parents don´t know about us yet. My mom then, in all of the goodness of her heart, decided to fix me up with a guy she found for me on that night. If I tell her that I can´t go out with her guy, then she´s bound to ask me why and I´ll either have to come up with a lie to explain to her why I can´t, or tell her the truth.

Holly J:

Why don´t you think your parents will accept your special someone? He can´t be that bad, can he?

Fiona leans in to whisper to her.

Fiona (whispering to Holly J):

Because it´s a she.

Holly J sees what she means and nods in understanding.

Holly J:

I see.

Fiona:

Either way, there´s no way I can win!

Holly J takes a few seconds to consider it.

Holly J:

What if I went out with this guy for you?

Fiona:

You would do that for me?

Holly J:

It´s not like I have any other plans!

Fiona:

That would be fantastic! My mom tells me that he´s a real catch too, so you probably won´t regret it!

Holly J:

I´m sure, he will be!

Fiona:

This is such a weight off my shoulders, you have no idea!

They smile at each other.

9. Int. Hallway. Day.

Declan is heading up the hallway, when Eli comes over to him.

Eli:

Declan, just the guy I was looking for!

Declan:

Well, you found me!

Eli:

I´ve been trying to get people together for a reading over the weekend, as a way to get an informal start on things. We´ll buy some pizzas and have a little party afterwards.

Declan:

Cool, as long as it isn´t tonight.

Eli:

It´s not. It´s tomorrow at my house. I´ll text you the address.

Declan:

Sounds great. Say, there was something I wanted to ask you about the play ...

Eli:

Anything! I love talking about my work!

Declan:

Where did the names come from?

Eli:

Uhm ... Clare came up with Bella and Edward for the main characters. I think that I was the one, who came up with the name Mary for the jilted girlfriend.

Declan:

So it is true, that you and her wrote it together?

Eli:

Yes. I wrote the words, but it´s her story for by far the most part.

Declan smiles knowingly to himself.

Declan:

Bella, Edward and Mary. It´s a little funny, when you think about it.

Eli:

I´m sorry, I´m not following you.

Declan:

It´s just my own strange sense of humor. See you later, Eli. I have a class to get to.

He walks away from Eli, who looks at him walking away with a puzzled look on his face.

10. Int. Cafeteria. Day.

Imogen and Fiona are chatting away with Declan sitting with them, but not really following the conversation.

Imogen:

I checked out some romantic recipes, but many of them had veal in them and I don´t think it´s right that a baby cow should have to die, just so we can celebrate our anniversary!

Fiona:

Me neither. No food that involves animals, who should still have their entire lives ahead of them!

Imogen:

It´s only okay if they´re very close to dying from old age anyway and you´re really doing them a favor, by putting them out of their misery!

Fiona:

I agree. In that case it´s okay!

Declan is busy looking over at Holly J, who´s eating her lunch with Sav and Mia. Holly J tries to avert his gaze, but is finding it hard to. When he smiles at her, she gives him the finger under the table though, which only makes him smile.

11. Ext. Restaurant. Evening.

Holly J is waiting eagerly for her date to show up and makes wide eyes, when she sees a limo pull up by the curb in front of of her.

Holly J (to herself):

Whoever it is, he sure knows how to make an entrance!

Declan comes out and she looks surprised.

Holly J:

Is this some sort of sick brother/sister thing, I´ve gotten myself in the middle of?

Declan:

I wasn´t planning on any date happening at first. I´ll take it as an extra bonus though.

Holly J:

You were behind all this? Why would you drive your sister crazy like that?

Declan:

For her own good. I´ll explain it all to you inside, if you´ll let me.

She looks like she´s warming up to him a tiny bit.

Holly J:

Okay, since we´re here anyway and my stomach is rumbling!

Declan:

They do a very delicious duck in there. Shall we?

He opens the door for her and she steps inside with him following right after her.

12. Int. Imogen´s Room. Evening.

Imogen and Fiona are making out, before they head off to the movies.

Fiona:

We need to leave soon or we´ll miss the previews.

Imogen:

Just a minute more, okay?

Fiona smiles to herself.

Fiona:

You are really hard to say no to, you know that?

Imogen:

I try to be.

Fiona:

Imogen, I don´t know if I can put into words, what you mean to me. I love you.

Imogen:

I love you too.

Imogen keeps kissing her, but Fiona gently pushes her off and looks her deeply into the eyes.

Fiona:

You don´t get what I meant. Immy, I´m completely out of control, out of my mind in love with you! A year ago I was so lonely, that I didn´t know if I wanted to go on living and now thanks to you, if feels like every day is a long wonderful dream, that doesn´t end.

Imogen smiles at her nice words.

Fiona:

You´re amazing and special in all of the right ways, no matter what anyone else thinks about you. If they can´t see that you´re practically an angel in disguise, then I pity them, because to me you are. A sometimes slightly weird and always very quirky angel, but an angel all the same.

They give one another a small kiss.

Imogen:

I don´t know if I can follow that up, but here goes! Fiona, when I was a kid, I was always teased by kids my own age for being different. I never got invited to any birthday parties and all of my own birthdays only consisted of me with my family, because I never had any real friends to speak of. I think that´s where some of my stubbornness not to want to be like everyone else comes from, but it´s also in big part my dad who would keep telling me, that someday someone would come along, who would love my quirks and see them as a positive. I have to admit that there´s been lots of times, especially before I became friends with Bianca, where I started to doubt him, but I´m glad now that I stuck in there and stayed true to myself. Because if it hadn´t, then it wouldn´t have led me to you, who´s brought such a light into my life, that there´s no way for me to explain, what you´ve done for me. Do I love you back? Heck yeah, more than you could ever understand.

They smile at one another and look very in love.

13. Int. Restaurant. Evening.

Declan and Holly J are having dinner at the same place, he ate with Fiona at.

Holly J:

There never was a guy to begin with, was there?

Declan:

There was. An old friend of mine, who owed me a favor.

Holly J:

What was your plan then?

Declan:

To get Fiona to come out to our parents, until I decided that it was more important that you and her made up. Life´s too short to have enemies over the silliest of things, don´t you agree?

Holly J:

Like someone walking in on someone else in the shower, perhaps?

Declan:

It really was an accident.

Holly J:

Yeah, right! I´ll believe that the day Fiona shows up for school in sneakers, which we both know would never happen!

They smile at one another.

Declan:

She´s really happy here. Finding real friends in Imogen and Bianca has done incredible things for her, compared to what she was like that last time in New York.

Holly J:

I´m glad, that it´s worked out for her, despite the unwelcome welcome, I gave her, when she first arrived at Degrassi.

Declan:

Do you feel guilty over it?

Holly J:

It wasn´t one of my finer moments. If this helps her, then I´m glad to do my little bit for her and her girlfriend.

Declan:

She told you, did she? Does it bother you, that she´s gay?

Holly J:

No, not at all. Does it with you?

Declan:

Holly J, until I someday have children of my own, I can´t imagine that there could ever be anyone in this world, that I will love as much, as I love my sister. There is nothing I wouldn´t do to make her happy. She deserves only the best in life and I intend to do everything I can to make that happen, whether she´s straight, bi, lesbian, trans or something else, I haven´t thought of. None of that matters to me the slightest, when it comes to her.

She looks impressed with his answer and he smirks a little in the knowledge, that he´s already gotten her to warm up to him and no clue, what his plans are.
