Pokemon Academy: Beginning of Beginnings

Chapter 1049

"Elise!" Cynthia shouted. "Use wing attack!"

"Swellow!" Elise flapped her wings and flew towards Maria, spinning through the air. As she approached the Mareanie, Maria prepared to strike back. She launched a burst of sludge at Elise, using venoshock to take advantage of the poison.

But to Maria's surprise, her attack had no effect. That was because Elise was far too quick. She swiftly evaded the venoshock with turcks and spin and swung her wing, hitting Maria in the face hard. Maria cried out in pain and was knocked backwards, rolling across the ground and coming to a stop. She struggled to get back up, before succumbing to her injuries.

"Maria!" Blake cried.

"Mar…" Maria groaned, passing out.

"Yes! We did it!" Cynthia cheered.

"Whoa, that's some power," Julia said, raising her eyebrow curiously. "That must be Swellow's Guts ability kicking in."

"Exactly right, Julia!" Cynthia nodded enthusiastically. "Thanks to Guts, Elise's strength was significantly increased! And that's not all… we won't succumb to the poison! So come on, Blake, send out your next pokemon!"

"I will, I will," Blake said, recalling Maria to her pokeball. He thought for a moment about who he wanted to use next before settling on his best option. "Ruru! Go!"

"Gal!" Ruru emerged from her pokeball, and the fur on her body began to crackle with electricity. She scurried towards Elise.

"Ruru, use discharge," Blake ordered. Ruru began to crackle with electricity, preparing to release it towards the Swellow.

Cynthia was prepared for that. She knew Elise had a limited utility against Electric type pokemon, but she had her reasons for keeping her in.

"Elise, quick attack," she ordered. Elise flapped her wings and shot forward, dancing through the sky. She slammed into Ruru and knocked her backwards. With the boost from Guts, Elise's quick attack was incredibly powerful.

"Galvantula!" Ruru buzzed. She released her electric discharge, and the current of electricity slammed into Elise, shooting her out of the sky. Cynthia winced as she saw her Swellow plummet to the ground, hitting hard.

"Elise!" She cried. Elise struggled to her feet and flapped her wings, taking to the sky again. She flew around the air, feeling the drain from her poisoning.

Elise doesn't have much time left, Cynthia judged. If we're going to do this, now's the time. Come on, Elise, just hold on a little more!

"Elise!" She shouted. "Now!"

"Swellow!" Elise turned back to Ruru and flapped her wings, summoning a powerful burst of wind. The air tore around her, swirling in a gale.

"What's going on here?"

Julia, Reiner, Nick, and Will turned to see who it was. To their surprise, it was Elaina, staring at the battle in confusion.

"Elaina?" Nick asked. "What are you doing? You're already up?"

"I felt something on the wind," Elaina muttered.

"Well, you're just in time," Julia said, turning back tot he battle. "Cynthia's about to use a powerful Flying type attack."

Elaina's eyes narrowed. "Uh, no, she's not. This move is something else."

"Defog!" Cynthia ordered. Elise released the wind, but it didn't rage towards Ruru and sweep her up like a Flying type move from Elaina would be. Instead, it swept over the field, blowing away the toxic spikes that Maria had set down.

"What's this?!" Blake gasped. Cynthia smirked.

"That's the power of defog! You've seen it plenty! The toxic spikes were flung away, and now the rest of my team is safe!" She boasted.

"That might be true, but it'll cost you," Blake warned. "Right, Ruru?"

"Galvantula!" Ruru had been building up electricity in her fur this entire time, and now she had the energy stored and ready to release.

The current of electricity slammed into Elise, electrocuting her. Combined with the poison that was running through her, it was more damage than the Swellow could withstand, and she collapsed in a heap on the ground.

"Sorry Elise," Cynthia apologized, recalling her Swellow. "But you did really good. Thanks for clearing away the toxic spikes, and you even managed to take out Maria. I couldn't have asked for a better showing!"

She raised her head, a wild smile on her face. "This is just the kind of battle I love! Let's do this, Blake! Leon, come out!"

"Gligar!" Her Gligar growled, emerging from his pokeball. He was gliding through the air, claws raised and tail swinging towards Ruru.

"Nice one!" Reiner cheered. "With a Ground type pokemon, Cynthiawill definitely have the edge against an Electric type like Ruru!

Blake clearly thought so as well, because he recalled Ruru to her pokeball immediately.

"What's the matter, Blake?" Cynthia smirked. "Running in fear?"

"Something like that," Blake said. "Go, Cory!"

Blake sent out a pokemon that was much more suited for this exchange than Ruru. His Crawdaunt gnashed his claws angrily, scuttling forward.

"Another Water type," Cynthia scoffed. "How predictable! Leon, use swords dance to boost your attack!"

"Gligar!" Leon spun through the air, sharpening his pincers against themselves to increase his attacking power.

"Cory, aqua jet!" Blake ordered. Cory shot forward with his pincers raised, and slammed into Leon, striking him with his claw. Leon cried out in pain and tumbled backwards, but he didn't fall. His defenses were naturally high.

"This is interesting," Elaina mused. She was curious about Blake's battle. It wasn't every day that she got to witness another trainer fight in front of her, so it was natural to be excited. Especially considering that her friends were doing the fighting.

…Well, Blake was her friend, anyway. As for Cynthia… well, a girl could hope, couldn't she? …Not that she WAS hoping of course. It was just a curiosity.

"Okay, Leon, use agility next! We need to make it a little hard to hit you," Cynthia ordered.

"Not good!" Blake realized. He saw what Cynthia was building up towards, and he wasn't going to let it happen. If this worked, then Cynthia would sweep the rest of the battle away, no sweat. "Cory! You need to use bubblebeam to hamper his movements!"

"Craw!" Cory nodded, raising his pincers. He fired a barrage of bubbles, filling the air with foamy bubbles that served as a minefield.

"You're going to need more that a few obstacles to hamper us!" Cynthia boasted. "Leon, use acrobatics!"

With the aid of his agility, Leon danced through the air, evading the floating bubbles heading his way. He twisted and turned through the sky, using moves that were clearly borrowed from Elise. And in a second he was right upon Cory, ready to strike.

"Gligar!"

"Crawdaunt!"

The two pokemon shouted in unison. Leon swung his pincer at Cory, who countered with his own. Their pincers skipped off each other, but Cory took the brunt of the attack and stumbled back, wincing in pain from the strike.

"Cory!" Blake cried out. Acrobatics was a powerful attack under normal conditions. But aided with a swords dance it was even stronger.

"Just the opening we were looking for!" Cynthia crowed. "Now, Leon! Use baton pass to pass those boosts onto our next pokemon!"

With a growl, Leon began to glow, returning to his pokeball. Cynthia caressed it happily, turning to Blake and smiling.

"So what now?" Blake asked, intrigued despite himself. "Is that going to be bad?" He knew it was. After all, the perfect pokemon for dealing with Cory was Tristan. And Tristan was a powerful pokemon. If he wanted to win, then he'd need to come up with something.

"She's definitely going with her Breloom," Will said.

"That's right," Julia grinned. "It should be good!"

"…Go, James!" But Tristan wasn't the pokemon Cynthia decided to rely on. To everyone's surprise, she sent out her Loudred instead. James beat his chest ferociously and let out a roar, stomping towards Cory.

Blake didn't know what to make of that.

"You didn't use Tristan?" He asked in disbelief. Weiss was his strongest choice against Tristan, and with how powerful he would be from Leon's boosts, he wasn't sure that they'd be capable of winning the battle.

But Cynthia had chosen a different pokemon instead. How odd.

"Just you watch!" Cynthia said, not at all concerned with the fact that she was using James instead of Tristan. "James, use thunderpunch!"

"Loudred!" James roared, charging at Cory. He raised his fist and electricity surged across it. Lumbering forward, he prepared to strike Cory, moving far quicker than his opponent.

"Cory!" Blake shouted. "Dodge you're your aqua jet!"

"Crawdaunt!" Cory covered himself with a veil of water, increasing his speed enough to evade James' strike.

Cory dodged the fist, and raised his pincer to counter. He swung a powerful crabhammer into James's side, pinching down hard on the pokemon's bulky body.

"LOUDRED!" James cried in pain. He swung his fist, smacking Cory hard and knocking him off. Cory stumbled back, opening up the opportunity for James to attack.

"Now go! Thunderpunch!" Cynthia cheered. James barreled forward, raising his fist and swinging it at Cory, hitting him head-on.

"CRAW!" Cory wailed in pain as the body electrocuted him. He collapsed to the ground, panting, but he wasn't done yet.

"Razor shell!" Blake ordered. Cory raised his pincer and a long blue blade erupted from his claw. He swung it at James, hitting him directly and slicing deep into the Loudred, badly injuring him with a powerful blow.

"That was a critical hit," Nick winced. "That's not good."

"Do your best!" Elaina shouted, supporting Blake fully.

"Thanks, Elaina!" He nodded to her. Cynthia's eye twitched in frustration.

"Come on, let's do this already!" She growled. "James, use echoed voice!"

"Loudred!" James roared, firing a sonic shockwave that pulsed through the air, hitting Cory directly. Cory cried out in pain.

"Craw!" Cory howled, raising his pincer in defiance.

"Bubblebeam!" Blake ordered.

Cory fired a barrage of bubbles at the approaching Crawdaunt, who lifted his arms to protect himself from the attack. But he didn't fall back. Electricity surged through his arms as he lumbered forward, and he swung a powerful punch at Cory, hitting him directly.

"CRAWDAUNT!" Cory cried out in pain.

"Cory!" Blake cried. He grabbed his pokeball. "Quick, I'll return you for now, so-"

"Crawdaunt!" Cory barked angrily, turning and glaring at his trainer. The gleam in his eyes was an adamant one.

Blake didn't know what to say to that. His pokemon clearly wanted to stay in the fight, could he really deny him the opportunity? With that, he nodded his head and let him stay inside.

"Admirable, Blake," Cynthia nodded in respect.

"…This is really something, wow," Will said, shaking his head. "That Crawdaunt took two thunderpunches directly, and boosted with swords dance too, and he's still able to keep fighting, wow. I can't believe it."

"That's because Marion trained her well," Julia said.

Reiner narrowed his eyes. "…But that's not necessarily going to work out for the best right now," he judged, staring at the electricity that was running over Cory's carapace. "I think that last hit paralyzed him."

"Oh, no!" Nick gasped. "That's not good!"

"Come on, Cory!" Blake shouted. "Let's keep going! Aqua jet!"

Cory lowered his head and charged at James. Water rose up around his damaged carapace and he raised his pincers to strike at James.

"James, use thunderpunch!" Cynthia ordered, but knew it was probably futile. After all, even with Cory's paralysis, aqua jet made him far faster than James could hope to be.

But then they had their big break. Before Cory was able to slam into James, his body seized up and began twitching. The water around him swirled to a halt and he couldn't move forward no matter how hard he tried.

"Uh-oh, it's the paralysis," Will winced. "That's not good."

No, it certainly wasn't. With the paralysis, Cory's body couldn't move properly, which left him vulnerable just long enough for James to take advantage. James let out a howl and ran forward, driving his fist into Cory's chest. He discharged electricity into Cory's body, zapping him hard, finally overwhelming the Crawdaunt's defenses.

Cory collapsed to the ground, electricity twitching across him. He couldn't continue fighting no matter how hard he wanted to.

"You did good, Cory," Blake said, recalling his Crawdaunt. They were tied at having lost two pokemon apiece, but Blake wasn't about to let it end here. He was just getting started and he had a good idea what to do. "Ruru!" He shouted, sending his Galvantula back out. "Let's do this!"

"Galvantula!" Ruru chattered, landing on the ground. Electricity surged over her body as she built up a current to discharge.

"James, we're going to have to retreat for now," Cynthia commanded. James was her trump card and she didn't want to lose him so easily.

But Blake wasn't about to let him get away. Cynthia raised her pokeball to call him back, but Ruru was too quick. She spit a burst of spider webbing out of her mouth, covering James in sticky white thread that impeded his movements and made it impossible for Cynthia to call him back to his pokeball for another pokemon.

"James!" Cynthia cried as her Loudred thrashed against the spider webs, trying to break free. But he couldn't get away. And now that he was bundled up in Ruru's threads, that left him perfectly vulnerable to her attacks.

"Discharge!" Blake ordered. Ruru sent a discharge of electricity through the air. The current struck the thread and the spider webbing was immediately electrocuted, turning into an electroweb attack that shocked James badly.

"NO! James!" Cynthia cried. James remained standing, but was clearly injured. He clutched his side and tried to look tough, but he couldn't keep up the façade for long.

"Ruru, thunder wave," Blake ordered. He needed to do something to make up for the stat advantage that James had. But much to his disappointment, even with the spider webs James wasn't so weakened that he couldn't get away. He leapt over the arc of lightning and landed on the ground, letting out a roar of anger.

"Fire punch, now!" She ordered.

Flames burst up on his fist and he charged right at Ruru.

"Ruru, use agility to evade!" Blake ordered. Ruru skittered away, dodging James's attacks, evading them easily. Ruru was fast with her agility and she easily put some distance between the two of them. Then she built up more electricity, but of a different sort.

"Electro ball!" Blake ordered.

"Oh, that's a good one, Reiner applauded.

"Definitely," Will nodded. "And thanks to the paralysis it's going to be a powerful move for sure, which isn't good for Cynthia."

James was faster than usual thanks to the boost he'd been given from Leon. But Ruru was naturally faster, and had the same boost to her speed. Factoring in the paralysis from the thunder wave, and there was no doubt that this attack would be a powerful one.

The orb of electricity struck James directly, electrocuting him. He let out a wail of pain and fell forward, unable to withstand the power of Ruru's electric moves.

"No, James!" Cynthia cried, seeing her pokemon faint before her very eyes. She'd been counting on James to carry her all the way to the end, but he was already defeated.

"So much for that," Blake said. He felt strange. It was like he wasn't fighting the Cynthia he was used to fighting. "Well, come on them. What's next?"

So, what's next for the fight? What pokemon will Cynthia use to defeat Blake and his team? She's been trying hard not to rely on Tristan, but if she wants to win, she might have to risk it after all. This is going to be a tough situation, that's for sure. Hopefully she'll be able to think of something to keep her edge, or this is going to be difficult!
