Chapter 13 – Counterattack

"You're looking low on energy, Takeshi-kun. Maybe you should have skipped school today after all?"

"Don't be ridiculous. A small thing like attempted possession by a malevolent Dragon isn't a valid excuse for me to miss a school day."

"No, normally, that would be a perfectly valid excuse…"

Such a conversation was taking place between Yuuto and Takeshi. The two young Devils were sitting in their classroom, enjoying lunch break while digging into their respective lunch boxes. Yuuto's earlier comment had been prompted by Takeshi's general condition, since the latter was looking sluggish and exhausted throughout the whole day so far.

"It's only been three days since then." Yuuto continued. "No matter how effective our healing methods are, you shouldn't push yourself too much. You won't be doing yourself or us any favors if you collapse in the middle of work, or worse, in the middle of battle."

"Don't worry, Yuuto." Takeshi made a dismissive gesture. "I can handle a little exhaustion just fine. If I feel like I can't, I'll go to the nurse's office and rest for a bit. But considering what occurred in the past days, I don't think I can afford to relax."

"An attack by Stray Exorcists equipped with some sort of hi-tech armor was something we couldn't have predicted." Yuuto said after making sure that no-one was eavesdropping. "It was a difficult challenge, but we gleaned several important bits of information from that fight."

"One, we know for sure now that we're targeted." Takeshi started raising fingers. "Two, we know that our enemy is the Grigori organization, or at the very least, some faction that has splintered from them. Three, that mysterious girl, Pandora, is definitely involved with them. It's a lot more than we were aware of three days before."

"What's concerning is their endgame." Yuuto frowned. "If they're targeting President and us, it stands to reason that they're after the Student President as well. But they can't be expecting to take us down with just Stray Exorcists wearing power suits. Is their plan connected to the manner in which they caused the natural disaster that struck Minano?"

"In that case, Pandora might be a crucial part of it." Takeshi said. "My memories of that fight are a bit fragmented, but I seem to recall that she could control the elements in some manner. However, at some point, her power went haywire, striking down one of her allies."

"Interesting." Yuuto said. "This might be something we can capitalize on when we next encounter them."

"Bring it on…is what I want to say, but first, I need to figure out how to better control Berserk Devastator so as not to have a repeat of last time." Takeshi said, clenching his fist. "Plus, I can't say I'm looking forward to fighting the Stray Exorcists again. One of them has bats in the belfry for sure."

"You're talking about that Freed fellow you told me about before, right?"

"I can see why a guy like him was exiled from the Church, considering he's a raving lunatic." Takeshi said. "Are all Stray Exorcists like him on some level? Because I'm really not looking forward to taking on an entire group comprised of mental asylum patients."

"Some are probably a bit too bloodthirsty like him, which is why they didn't fit in the Church's environment." Yuuto said. "But I believe most of them simply lost their faith for one reason or another and had no other choice but to seek refuge in Grigori. Otherwise, they'd be hunted down by the Church. I can't say I blame them for that…but this doesn't change the fact they're still our sworn enemies."

"Indeed." Takeshi said. "But if the Grigori are involved in this, there's a chance we might go against Fallen Angels as well, no? Troublesome enemies in their own right. If I remember well, while our demonic power is super effective against Angels, it's a bit less effective against Fallen Angels."

"It's as you say." Yuuto nodded. "Fallen Angels are also called the denizens of twilight for that reason. Because they've allowed their bodies to be dyed in sin and vices, they've obtained a higher tolerance to demonic power compared to their pure counterparts. But that didn't come without a cost to themselves."

"Ah, that's right." Takeshi said. "Because of that, their light is not as potent as that of a pure Angel's. Guess that's why the light poisoning I received, while pretty severe, didn't quickly reach life-threatening levels."

"The Stray Exorcists, who use the holy power of Fallen Angels as fuel for their weapons, are somewhat of a lesser threat compared to Church Exorcists because of that." Yuuto said. "However, their unscrupulous methods and general disregard for collateral damage evens things out. In any case, regarding the Fallen Angels, the general rule is that between an Angel and a Fallen Angel of the same level, the former's holy power will be more dangerous to us."

"If there are Fallen Angels hidden around Minano, what do you think their overall level will be?" Takeshi asked. "Middle-class? High-class? Or perhaps higher?"

"I can't say for sure." Yuuto shrugged. "It depends on their numbers as well. If there are several High-class Fallen Angels here, or worse, if there's an Ultimate-class Fallen…we'll have no choice but to run away for dear life. Though I doubt that's the case."

"Oh? How come?"

"Because the Fallen Angels have the lowest population among the Three Factions." Yuuto explained. "They were hit pretty hard during the Great War, which left them even more decimated compared to the Angels and Devils. My bet is that their strongest members are stationed in the Underworld to protect their territories from an attempted invasion by us, which is why they shouldn't be able to spare too many high-level members on their missions."

[Tch, so the delicious meal will turn out to be a simple appetizer? How annoying! Bring on all the strong guys I love so much!]

"That makes sense." Takeshi said, ignoring Grendel's complaints. "But that also depends on this mission's importance for them. If the Fallen Angels are on the warpath for some reason and this is the critical first strike…we might be in for a nasty surprise after all."

"Let's hope that's not the case." Yuuto said. "In any case, the scheduled communication we'll receive from Grigori's representative later on should clear things up a bit."

"Would be nice if it was that easy…"

"Hey, hey, what's wrong, you two?" Aika, who slipped into the chair next to Takeshi, said. "Why the long faces and serious expressions? You're making the rest of the class anxious."

Taking a look around, Takeshi noticed that a subdued atmosphere was indeed hanging around the classroom. Most students were eating their lunches with nervous, or in some cases, scared expressions on their faces. Takeshi clicked his tongue upon realizing he had not been minding the flow of draconic aura from his body, which was trickling out. Taking a deep breath, he forced most of the excess inwards. The effect was immediate as everyone seemed to relax at once.

"Phew, that's better." Aika said, wiping her brow. "Seriously, to think you can bring down the whole class's mood like that… Maybe you are demon-possessed after all, Ryuugamine?"

"Maybe." Takeshi shrugged. "But if I am, that says a lot about you, Kiryuu. Who in their right mind would approach such a person and sit next to them?"

"A very brave, charming and resilient person like me." Aika stuck a pose while grinning. "As such, I come bearing a message from Fukuda-san of Class 2-C for Kiba-kun. She'd probably be here herself, but with the big, bad Ryuugamine in the way, that's a bit difficult."

Takeshi rolled his eyes at that, while Yuuto leaned forward with a curious expression.

"So, what does Fukuda-san want with me, Kiryuu-san?"

"Oh, more of the usual." Aika said. "She wonders if you're free today because she wants to invite you out to karaoke with her friends. I told her there's no chance in Hell since Ryuugamine and Kiba-kun are a couple, but—"

"Kiryuu…" Takeshi growled, glaring at his classmate. "If you're spreading these sorts of dumb rumors, I swear I'll—"

"Oh, relax a bit, would you?" Aika said. "I'm just joking. It's not as if the girls need my help to come up with material about you two…"

"What was that?"

"Nothing!" Aika said, turning to Yuuto. "So, about your answer, Kiba-kun…"

"Sorry, but tell Fukuda-san that we're very busy with club activities these days, so I can't join her." Yuuto said. "Perhaps some other time."

"Hm, I see, I see." Aika said, pulling out a notepad and writing something on it. "That one makes it…the fiftieth rejection of a girl's invitation by Kiba-kun. Well, at least Fukuda-san can take comfort in being a milestone number. See you later, Ryuugamine, Kiba-kun."

With that, Aika left the classroom, leaving the confused Takeshi and Yuuto behind.

"…What was that all about?"

"Beats me." Takeshi shrugged. "Just Kiryuu being Kiryuu, I guess. We should hurry up and finish eating. Lunch break is almost over."

Yuuto nodded as both young men turned their attention back to their respective lunch boxes.

Later, at the Occult Research Club…

"Good, you're both here."

Rias said as Takeshi and Yuuto entered the clubroom. As usual, Akeno was next to her while Koneko was sitting in one of the sofas, eating youkan.

"The Student President isn't here yet?"

"No, not yet." Rias responded to Yuuto's question. "She got held up by some urgent Student Council business, but she'll be here shortly along with her Peerage. Until then, you can all relax."

"Easier said than done…"

Takeshi muttered, sitting next to Koneko. The white-haired girl looked at her plate, and then back at Takeshi, a conflicted expression on her face, before offering a youkan to him.

"For me?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow, looking surprised. "That's shocking to say the least. You usually don't share food. What brought this on?"

"…If you don't want it, give it back."

"No, no, I'll take it." Takeshi said, gulping down the youkan in one go. "Thanks a lot, Koneko-chan."

"…No problem."

"How's your body doing, Takeshi-kun?" Akeno asked as she sat next to him. "Are you sure you should be up and about like that after your ordeal? Maybe you should rest a bit more."

"I can still keep going no problem." Takeshi said. "Don't worry about me."

"…I can't help but worry." Koneko said, clasping Takeshi's hand. "Senpai is really bad at taking care of himself."

"What Koneko-chan said." Akeno said, taking his other hand in her own. "I fear you're pushing yourself too much at times. You don't have to prove anything to us, or to anyone else for that matter. The thought of losing you because you tried to do too much…it frightens me."

Takeshi was surprised by Akeno's heartfelt tone, as well as the hints of some other emotion behind her passionate gaze, which was gone as fast as it showed though. He smiled as he squeezed both girls' hands in return.

"It's nice to have people who care so much for you." Takeshi said. "I understand that you're concerned about me, and I appreciate that very much, but I'm also worried about you. If something happens to you and I'm not there to help, that's something I would regret for the rest of my life. That's why, pushing myself a bit is a small price to pay as long as you're safe."

"That's not fair…" Akeno pouted, a slight blush on her face as she rested her head on Takeshi's shoulder. "What am I supposed to say in the face of such passionate determination?"

"…Senpai is a cheater."

Koneko grumbled as she leaned closer to Takeshi's body as well, her face also a bit red. Upon seeing this scene, Rias smiled with a mischievous look on her face.

"Such a heartwarming scene indeed." Rias grinned. "All this love in the air gives me all sort of fuzzy feelings. What about you, Yuuto?"

"It certainly feels peaceful to say the least."

Yuuto smirked as he drank his tea. Both Akeno and Koneko separated from Takeshi in haste, matching embarrassed expressions on their faces.

"Aw, it's over already?" Takeshi smiled. "Shame. And I was just starting to get comfortable there."

"Ara, ara, if you want us to cuddle more, then you only have to ask." Akeno let out a sly smile, having regained her composure. "But I would prefer a place that's not as…crowded as this clubroom, ufufu~."

"…Akeno-senpai is a hard opponent. But I won't lose…"

Koneko mumbled so, clenching her fists with a determined expression on her face. At that moment, a knock was heard on the door, with Sona stepping inside along with the rest of her Peerage.

"Sorry I'm late, Rias." Sona said, an apologetic expression on her face. "My business took a bit longer to conclude than I expected."

"Don't worry about it, Sona." Rias said. "We still have some time until the scheduled contact from the Fallen Angels' side."

"This should be a good opportunity then." Sona said. "Saji, Nimura, step forward."

Following Sona's order, two unknown individuals hidden behind the other Peerage members Takeshi was already familiar with stepped forward. One was a young girl with a slim figure that had brown hair styled in long twin ponytails and green eyes, a confident smile on her face. The other was a young man with short blond hair and grey eyes, who seemed to be of similar age to Takeshi and Yuuto. Both of them wore Kuoh Academy's uniform, though the girl also wore a pair of green clips in her hair and stripped green stockings.

"These two are my newest servants." Sona said. "Introduce yourselves, you two."

"I'm Nimura Ruruko, a first-year student in Kuoh Academy and Student President's newest Pawn." Ruruko waved. "I happened to chance upon the Student Council training a while back, and I asked to be reincarnated as a Devil once I learned their circumstances. Nice to meet you all!"

"Chanced…upon them?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "I find that hard to believe. Student President, didn't you place barriers around the area you guys were training?"

"I did, yet Nimura here slipped through them somehow." Sona said. "Perhaps an ancestor of hers was blessed with special abilities, and she inherited some part of them. Either way, I was intrigued by that and the light-hearted manner in which she asked me to join us, which is why I brought her to my Peerage."

"To request becoming a Devil in such a manner, I can only say that you're very courageous and strong-willed, Nimura-san." Yuuto remarked. "Not many people would react like that upon finding out Devils are real."

"Ehehe, thank you, Kiba-kun."

Takeshi couldn't help but agree with this estimation since his first encounter with the Gremory Peerage had resulted in him fainting from the shock.

"I'm next then." The young man next to Ruruko said. "My name is Saji Genshirou, a second-year student and Student President's Pawn. Unlike Nimura though, I consumed four Pawn pieces. Pleasure to meet you, guys."

"Oh, the same Pawn as me, and also a guy from the same year as Yuuto and me then?" Takeshi seemed intrigued. "But if you took four pieces, your Sacred Gear must be quite unique, Saji-kun."

"Ryuugamine…" Saji muttered, a wary expression on his face. "I had heard the rumors, but didn't believe them until now. To think you really were a Devil… Looks like people's intuition cannot be underestimated."

"Hey, for your information, I only became a Devil recently." Takeshi countered. "Before that, everything was my damn Sacred Gear's fault."

"I heard about that too." Genshirou said, a serious expression on his face. "You're the bearer of Cataclysm Zone, the current Evil Dragon User. Because of that, you're liable to go on a rampage, right? However, if you try to harm the Student President, you're going to have to go over my dead body first!"

[What an utter fool. Though there is a familiar scent coming from him…]

[Does this scrawny brat really think he can stop us? But it's not like I hate motivated guys like him!]

"Relax, I don't intend to harm anyone other than our enemies." Takeshi said, ignoring Nidhogg and Grendel's comments. "That's why, we should get along as fellow Pawns…though my count is higher than yours, so feel free to request advice from your senior whenever you feel like it, Saji-kun."

"You've only been a Devil for little more than two months, Ryuugamine!" Saji exploded. "Why the Hell would I ask for advice from you!? You think you're better than me!? Also, don't get too cocky just because you're Rias-senpai's only Pawn!"

"Saji, enough." Sona said. "This is not the time or place for petty arguments."

"You too, Takeshi." Rias said. "Don't provoke your fellow Pawn for your amusement."

"Yes, Student President…"

"Right, right." Takeshi waved his hand. "Sorry about that, Saji-kun. I really hope we can work together to protect our town and our comrades."

"We'll see."

At that moment, the magic circle in the clubroom shone. Both Rias and Sona's expressions became more serious as a result.

"It's time." Rias said. "Akeno?"

"I've confirmed the source of the incoming transmission." Akeno said, a harsh expression on her face. "It's Grigori's official line. The Fallen Angels are attempting to contact us."

"Saji, Nimura, step outside for now." Sona said. "Since you two are recent additions, the Fallen Angels shouldn't know about you just yet. I'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible."

Both Genshirou and Ruruko nodded, exiting the clubroom. As for Sona, she stood next to Rias, with the two heiresses nodding at each other. Once they were ready, Rias channeled her demonic power to the magic circle. The next moment, the holographic image of a tall man wearing a black robe with detailed accessories appeared there. He had long, black hair, red eyes and pointy ears, along with a pale complexion.

[Greetings, Devils of Kuoh Town.] The man said. [I am Kokabiel, one of Grigori's Cadres. It's a…pleasure to make your acquaintance.]

"That guy's a Fallen Angel…?" Takeshi whispered to Yuuto. "He looks more like a Vampire if anything."

"Trust me, he's a Fallen Angel alright, and a notorious one at that." Yuuto whispered back. "He's one of the beings whose name is recorded in the Bible and a survivor of the Great War."

"I am Rias Gremory, the next heir of House Gremory and the overseer of this territory." Rias introduced herself. "Next to me is Sona Sitri, the next heir of House Sitri. Thank you for your prompt response to our query."

[Think nothing of it.] Kokabiel said. [This was only proper, since it appears some rogue elements from our side have been causing you trouble. We also want this incident dealt with sooner rather than later, and have our stolen property returned to us as well if possible.]

"Then, are we correct to assume that the Stray Exorcists who attacked Rias's group did so without authorization from the Grigori?" Sona said. "That you and the other Cadres had no knowledge of this?"

[As I've already explained to your superiors, that is indeed the case, Sona Sitri.] Kokabiel said. [An unknown perpetrator stole the prototype battle armors we had been developing and abducted one of our newest recruits, the young Pandora. We are not sure why those Fallen Angels acted in such a manner though. Perhaps they believe they can gain Azazel's favor by eliminating two prominent young Devils such as you.]

"Is that so?" Rias narrowed her eyes. "I was under the impression the Governor General was averse to conflict. Attacking us like that seems counterproductive if those Fallen Angels want to be acknowledged by him."

[Who can say what goes through the minds of fanatics?] Kokabiel said. [If I didn't know any better, I'd say they know something I don't, but that's impossible. Azazel has been pretty vocal about his desire to maintain the status quo.]

"Where do you stand, Kokabiel-sama?" Sona asked. "Do you also wish to maintain the status quo like your leader?"

[Azazel's desires are my desires as well.] Kokabiel said. [No matter what his orders or policies are, I will carry them out without fail. That's how it's always been, and that's how it will always be. But enough about that. Our problems are the rogue Fallen and the stolen properties, no? With your permission, we'd like to dispatch a team to Minano City in order to capture or eliminate the traitors.]

"Dispatch a team, you say?" Rias asked. "Who will be leading this team? You?"

[Unfortunately, the other Cadres and I are rather busy with other projects and responsibilities, so we cannot intervene here.] Kokabiel said. [Moreover, I do not think the Shinto Gods would look kindly upon us enemy leaders entering their country. No, the one who will be dispatched is Zephon, an experienced Middle-class Fallen Angel whose tracking skills should be perfect for this mission, along with several Exorcists from our side.]

"I've heard mentions of him before." Sona said. "He's been serving directly under your Governor General for a couple of centuries now, right?"

[It appears the information network of the Devil King Leviathan cannot be underestimated.] Kokabiel let out a lopsided smile. [Yes, Zephon is one of Azazel's trusted retainers. He will ensure that those rebels are found and dealt with posthaste.]

"I see." Rias said. "You may dispatch whomever you wish under one condition; they won't enter Minano City or approach our territories in Kuoh under any circumstances. They may investigate the surroundings, but the city limits will be left to us. Should we see any Fallen Angels or Exorcists approaching us, our policy will be to shoot first, ask questions later."

[Hoh?] Kokabiel smirked. [Do you not trust us, Rias Gremory?]

"Forgive us for being leery, but we've had quite a few close calls over the past couple of months." Rias said. "That's why we're erring on the side of caution here. It's not as if our faction and yours are on friendly terms after all. We're still at the cold war stage."

"What Rias said." Sona added from the side. "We won't stand for more potential enemies roaming around in our territories."

[I suppose that is acceptable, if a little insulting.] Kokabiel said. [In exchange however, I would like to make a request.]

"What is it?" Rias asked. "If it's within our power, we will fulfil it."

[I would like you to capture Pandora alive and return her to us.] Kokabiel said. [I'm certain her powers are being used against her will. That's why, we would appreciate it if she was rescued.]

"What is that girl's power exactly?" Rias asked. "Judging from what my servant told me, she has the ability to control the elements through some manner. I assume that she's responsible for the disaster that struck Minano?"

[That's probably the case.] Kokabiel said. [Pandora's power allows her to control the various Spirits that are abundant in nature, which in turn enables her to manipulate the various elements. However, she's under a curse inherited from her predecessor, the Pandora from Greek Mythology, that causes the Spirits she wields to go berserk after a certain amount of time passes after using them.]

"Interesting." Sona said. "What does Grigori want with her though? I thought your organization focused on Sacred Gear research first and foremost."

[I'm not privy to that information.] Kokabiel said. [I assume her powers will be useful to Azazel for his pet projects, but I know nothing beyond that. Even if I did though, you can't expect me to share with you the inner workings of Grigori, yes?]

"I guess not." Rias said. "Very well, we shall do our best to seize Pandora. However, I will prioritize my Peerage's life above all else. If it's too much of a risk to capture her, we'll eliminate her instead."

[Understandable.] Kokabiel said. [Zephon and his team are already en route to Japan. If our side finds anything else about the rogues, we'll be sure to contact you. Well then, farewell.]

With that, Kokabiel's projection disappeared, causing everyone present to let out a relieved sigh. At the same time, Ruruko and Genshirou rejoined the rest of the Devils.

"So that's a Fallen Angel Cadre…" Tsubaki wiped her brow, a nervous expression on her face. "Even as a projection, his presence was intimidating."

"No kidding." Ruruko said. "Even though I couldn't see him, my legs wouldn't stop shaking…"

"More importantly, can we trust what he says?" Momo asked. "About this whole situation being the result of a rogue group?"

"There's no way we can trust his words." Akeno said with a serious expression. "Fallen Angels are experts when it comes to deceit and betrayal. He's probably withholding information in order to set a trap for us. I wouldn't be surprised if that group he's sending here acts as reinforcements to the ones that already attacked us."

"Perhaps that's the case, though it's too soon to tell." Sona said. "Truth be told, I would be more reassured about the Fallen Angels' intentions if the one who contacted us was either Azazel or Shemhazai, the Vice Governor of Grigori. However, Grigori's representatives said they were both occupied with other important matters and directed us to Kokabiel, the only Cadre available."

"Why these two specifically?" Takeshi asked. "I mean, they're Fallen Angels as well, and this might be a scheme involving the entirety of Grigori. What makes them more trustworthy?"

Rias and Sona looked at each other, nodding before turning to the rest of the group.

"What I'm about to say should not leave the confines of this room under any circumstances until the time is right." Rias said. "The truth is…over the past decades or so, Azazel and Shemhazai have been arranging secret meetings with both our Devil Kings and the Seraphs of Heaven. Their purpose is to reduce the number of small-scale skirmishes and lay down the foundations for a more permanent peace between the Three Factions."

Matching expressions of surprise and amazement appeared on everybody's faces following Rias's words.

"To avoid potential complications from our side, our leaders are negotiating without knowledge or consent from the Assembly." Sona continued. "That's why it's imperative you all remain silent about this. We trust you, and we trust that you all understand the need for discretion."

"That, and the fact that the noble Devils would pay no heed to the words of a Reincarnated Devil." Rias smiled. "Still, it won't be a secret for much longer since we're expecting a major breakthrough soon."

"Peace between the factions…" Takeshi muttered. "That's nice and all, but still, are we certain that the Fallen Angels aren't deceiving us on that front too? You know, playing the long con until they're ready to strike at us for maximum damage?"

"Takeshi-kun has a point." Akeno said. "The Fallen Angels have a notorious reputation for good reason. This whole affair sounds like a nasty trick."

"The possibility isn't zero." Sona said. "However, keep in mind that the Fallen Angels were the first to withdraw from the Great War. Azazel and Shemhazai have also been very forthcoming when it comes to providing information or diffusing tense situations so far. It's because of them that we avoided several close calls that could have potentially restarted the Great War over the past years. My sister believes in their intentions for the most part, so I choose to do the same."

"Eh, Student President…?" Genshirou raised his hand, speaking in a timid manner. "If knowledge of these negotiations is restricted only to our leaders…how does your sister know about them?"

"That's because my older sister is the current Devil King Leviathan."

"L-Leviathan!?" Genshirou screeched. "S-Student President's older sister is the current Leviathan!? That's the first time I'm hearing that!"

"Amazing!" Ruruko whistled. "Student President has a much higher standing than I imagined."

"So, President's brother is the Devil King Lucifer, and Student President's sister is the Devil King Leviathan." Takeshi said with an amazed expression. "Nope, doesn't sound any less unbelievable when I say it out loud."

"…Fate works in strange ways."

Koneko said from the side, still eating her youkan.

"In contrast, we know next to nothing about Kokabiel's intentions." Rias said. "He claims to follow Azazel's will, but that could very well be a lie. Kokabiel was one of the Fallen Angels' fiercest warriors, so it's hard to believe that he would be on board with peace."

"Individuals can change though." Reya pointed from the side. "Maybe he's being honest."

"Please." Akeno scoffed at Reya's words. "Fallen Angel and honest are two words that don't belong in the same sentence."

Akeno-san seems to have a serious grudge against Fallen Angels. Takeshi thought. I wonder why?

"Zephon's presence is the only reassuring thing due to his affiliation with Azazel, which puts my mind at ease a bit." Sona said. "Still, I will contact my sister and have her demand to speak to Azazel or Shemhazai regardless of their circumstances about this matter. She will probably march into Grigori's headquarters if needed."

"Eh, is this allowed?" Takeshi asked. "One of our leaders barging into the Fallen Angels' headquarters…isn't that cause for war? Why can't she just contact Azazel directly through magic circle or something?"

"My sister is in charge of the Foreign Affairs department, so she's allowed a certain degree of freedom when moving in neutral or enemy factions as long as she doesn't make a scene." Sona explained. "As for magic circles, the everyday ones we use have a limited range. Large-scale formations are needed for longer distances, both due to range and due to requiring a large number of encryption spells to prevent hacking or tampering. You wouldn't want a communication magic circle being rewritten into a teleportation one."

"Ah, I see." Takeshi said. "In that case, when will she be able to speak to Azazel?"

"It will take some time." Sona said "She's currently on a diplomatic visit to the Celtic Pantheon along with the rest of her Peerage for some very important negotiations."

"Seems too convenient…" Rias frowned. "Did the rogues time this with Leviathan-sama's visit and the Grigori's top two being unavailable?"

"If that's the case, those rogues have a frightening amount of information, as well as considerable backing." Sona said. "More importantly however, what will we do from now on?"

"I'll tell you what we won't do, and that's sit around and wait for the enemy to ambush us again." Rias said, taking out a piece of paper. "This time, we'll be taking the fight to them."

"That's…one of the leaflets we give to our prospective clients?" Yuuto frowned. "Why are you showing that to us, President?"

"Because I placed a specialized leaflet on one of the retreating Exorcists, branding him and his armor with our personal seal." Rias smiled. "Both seals' power is low to avoid being discovered, but once they've gathered enough energy from their surroundings, they will let out a pulse that will enable us to pinpoint our enemies' hideout. Once they do, we'll strike. That should be around tomorrow night if my calculations are correct."

"Excellent work, Rias." Sona praised her friend. "Coming up with this in the heat of battle couldn't have been an easy feat."

"Thank you, but I was already preparing this ever since Takeshi encountered Pandora." Rias said. "I only had time to create the one specialized seal before the Exorcists attacked us, so I couldn't pass it around to the others like I planned at first."

"Looks like it's time for payback." Takeshi grinned, bumping his fists together. "What about Pandora though? Are we going to capture her and deliver her to the Fallen Angels like you said we would, President?"

"I'm reluctant to do so, since we would be delivering a potentially powerful weapon to the Fallen Angels' side." Rias said. "However, if Kokabiel's claims are legitimate, I wouldn't want to cause an incident with Grigori over her. Plus, we could use more information about this whole affair, and she might be willing to provide us with what we need. That's why, let's try capturing her."

"Someone also needs to keep an eye on the group the Fallen Angels have dispatched in case they try to backstab us." Sona said. "I propose that we suspend all contracts in Kuoh Town for tomorrow and move to Minano. While your Peerage launches an assault at the renegades' base, we'll be monitoring the situation from your temporary base and assist you if needed."

"Sounds like a plan." Rias said. "I don't like the idea of leaving Kuoh undefended, but it seems like all the action is in Minano. The Sitri Peerage watching our backs will be reassuring."

"I've only been a Devil for a few days, and I'm already participating in a dangerous battle…" Genshirou sighed. "What kind of rotten luck is this?"

"Welcome to this wild ride, Saji-kun." Takeshi patted his fellow Pawn's shoulder. "It's only going to get crazier from here on out, so you'd better brace yourself."

"Even crazier?" Genshirou said with an incredulous expression. "Seriously? Now I'm really starting to regret becoming a Devil. Who's going to take care of Kaho and Gengo if something happens to me…?"

"It's settled then." Sona said. "We'll head to your temporary base and add to its defenses, as well as expand the surveillance spells. Will you be joining us?"

"We'll do so later." Rias said. "First, there's an important issue we need to resolve."

"Very well."

Sona said as she and her Peerage took her leave. Then, Rias turned to Takeshi.

"You might have guessed it, but your recent rampage presents a serious issue, Takeshi." Rias said. "Unless we understand what triggered it and how we can prevent it from happening in the future, you're a liability on the battlefield."

"Harsh…but true." Takeshi said. "So, what are we going to do about it?"

"Field tests." Rias said. "Follow me, everyone."

The Occult Research Club exited their clubroom and gathered in the back of the school building. There, Rias turned to Akeno, who nodded and conjured a large magic circle on the ground. Placing her hand forward, Rias added yet another magic circle around it before addressing Takeshi.

"We've created a barrier that should be able to prevent your power from leaking outside should you lose control again." Rias said. "It's also designed to restrain you. Step in there if you would and activate Berserk Devastator."

"Will do."

Takeshi entered the magic circle formation, standing in the middle. Immediately afterwards, a semi-transparent barrier formed around him, sealing him within its confines. Taking a deep breath, Takeshi summoned Cataclysm Zone, but hesitated there. Memories of his previous rampage flashed through his mind, along with the nasty sensation of Grendel invading his mind. Before he realized it, his hands were trembling and he had begun hyperventilating.

"Takeshi?" Rias asked. "Is something wrong? Are you alright?"

"I'm…I'm fine…" Takeshi said, struggling to control himself as he wiped the sweat from his brow. "Here goes nothing…"

Gathering his courage and overcoming his hesitation, Takeshi summoned Berserk Devastator. Much to his relief, he didn't seem to be losing control. Grendel was also silent.

"There doesn't seem to be a problem yet, President." Takeshi said, throwing a few quick jabs. "I'm still in control."

"So, simply summoning the Sacred Gear won't trigger your berserk state." Rias said. "What about using its abilities?"

"Way ahead of you." Takeshi said, having ignited his gauntlets and throwing small fireballs at the barrier. "Everything seems to be working fine."

"Then perhaps…your emotional state is the issue?" Akeno suggested. "Why don't you try recalling what you felt back then, Takeshi-kun?"

"That time, I was…"

Takeshi did his best to remember what had happened back there. The young couple being slaughtered by the Stray Exorcist Freed, his anger at his demented attitude and complete apathy, the pain and fury after being bound by the Exorcists' weapons…

[Oh, back for more, are you? Who am I to deny your request!?]

Takeshi's body spasmed as he felt his hatred grow. At the same time, he shuddered upon realizing that Grendel's consciousness was trying to invade once again. He howled as he fell on his knees, with the magic circles flaring up and shooting out several chains that bound his body.

"Takeshi!" Rias cried out. "What's happening!?"

"Everyone…!" Takeshi said through gritted teeth, "I think…we've got a hit…!"

"…Fight it, Senpai!" Koneko shouted. "Don't let him consume you!"

"Doing…my best…!"

"We can't just stand here and watch him suffer!" Yuuto said. "We have to do something!"

"Yes, but what…?" Akeno bit her lip, a pained expression on his face as she started at the writhing Takeshi. "Maybe I could try to exorcise Grendel…but I don't think my mother's teachings will be useful here."

Takeshi howled as Berserk Devastator started spitting flames that bounced off the barrier's walls. As his rage started mixing with Grendel's rage and overpowering him, a crazy idea came to him.

"Come…Mayhem Striker!"

It was a desperate gamble based on nothing but instinct. However, much to Takeshi's surprise, it worked. Mayhem Striker attempted to materialize, only for Cataclysm Zone's gems to start flashing in an erratic manner and sparks flying from it.

[Error.]

Following that announcement, an energy pulse shot out of Cataclysm Zone, causing all of Takeshi's Sacred Gears to vanish and him being launched backwards on the barrier's walls as the restraints around him were shattered.

"Takeshi!" Rias shouted, dismissing the barrier and rushing to his side at once alongside the others. "Are you alright?"

"Been…better…" Takeshi groaned as he forced himself on a sitting position. "Looks like we found…the secret ingredient. It's rage. The angrier I get…the easier it is for Grendel to take control of me while I use Berserk Devastator."

"That's scary." Yuuto said. "But how did you snap out of it just now?"

"Forced Cataclysm Zone…to bring out Mayhem Striker as well." Takeshi said. "The Sacred Gear couldn't handle both sub-Gears active at the same time and was overloaded…resulting in its deactivation. Or something to that effect at least. I'm not sure…if that's how it worked."

"The important thing is that it worked." Rias said. "But the berserker state being fueled by rage…it's kind of obvious in retrospect, but that doesn't make it any less difficult to handle. It's easy to lose yourself in rage when fighting. You may have to restrict yourself to Mayhem Striker for now."

"Even then, I'm not sure it's safe." Takeshi said. "I was using Mayhem Striker when fighting the Exorcists, but Grendel forcibly dismissed it and summoned Berserk Devastator once I had built up sufficient rage. Guess I'll just have to do my best to control myself."

"Yes, but for now, you should take a break." Rias said. "You're already exhausted from Grendel's previous rampage, and this experience must have been aggravating as well. You're getting tonight off, which means no contracts or any other Devil-related work."

"What!?" Takeshi stood up at once. "There's no need for that! I—"

"Rest!" Rias cut off Takeshi, a stern expression on her face. "That's an order, Takeshi. Don't make me strap you down on your bed by force."

"Ufufu, I'd be glad to do the honors." Akeno said, licking her lips. "A little bondage play never hurt anyone…too much."

"…Takeshi-senpai." Koneko grabbed Takeshi's sleeve with a pleading expression. "Please, listen to President."

"It's for your own good, Takeshi-kun." Yuuto said. "You know that, don't you?"

"…Fine, I'll rest." Takeshi sighed, a resigned expression on his face. "Can't do anything when you're all ganging up on me like this. But you'd better not leave me out of the coming fight!"

"I'm not, since you're a valuable member of this group." Rias said. "That's exactly why I'm urging you to take it easy. There's really no need to push yourself."

"OK, but if should anything unusual happen, call me. Alright?"

"You got it."

Takeshi said as he left the old school building grounds and headed back home.

Meanwhile, at Grigori Headquarters…

[You believe the Devils are suspicious of you, Kokabiel-sama?]

"They would be utter fools if they didn't suspect something was amiss."

Kokabiel responded, seated in an elegant chair inside a semi-circular chamber reminiscent of a church's interior. Before him were the holographic images of Turel and a Fallen Angel of average build with sharp, elfin features, brown hair spiked up and light brown eyes.

[As expected, they requested that Zephon's team doesn't approach the city limits or interfere with them in any way.] Turel said. [We could have potentially caught them in a pincer attack, but alas, it appears things won't be that easy. Speaking of which, where are you right now, Zephon?]

[I've just entered the country.] Zephon said. [It won't take much longer until I arrive at your location. Once I do, I will begin preparing Plan B for deployment. The Spiritron Engine is complete, I presume?]

[Yes.] Turel nodded. [Plan A is almost good to go as well. Everything should be ready around tomorrow night. Pandora's done her job well. It was worth picking her up, Kokabiel-sama.]

"It was, which is why I asked for the Devils to spare her." Kokabiel said. "But even if they don't, we don't really need her to go through with our plans anymore. More importantly, Azazel and Shemhazai still remain unaware?"

[As you requested, I redirected all incoming calls from the Underworld's Foreign Affairs department and the Devil Kings' offices to Fallen Angels affiliated with us.] Zephon said. [They should still be in the dark about our scheme, especially since they're both busy investigating that ancient ruin outside the coasts of Africa we uncovered alongside the White Dragon Emperor. Moreover, with the Devil King Leviathan busy on a diplomatic mission as well and with the help of our collaborators in the Underworld, we have a small window we can operate within before she returns from it and demands answers.]

[I'm still concerned.] Turel said. [Can we trust those Devils? Also, what happens if the heiresses pressure the other Devil Kings to further question Grigori? In that case—]

"That won't happen." Kokabiel said. "The current Devil Kings won't move until Leviathan is back in fear of causing more tension between the Underworld and Grigori. Their hesitation and our Devil collaborators will keep right where we want them. As for the issue of trust, of course, I don't trust them. However, trust doesn't factor in this. I will use everyone willing to be used. More importantly, what about the fabricated recording? Is it ready?"

[Not yet, but it's coming along.] Zephon said. [Just as you requested, the recording will depict Azazel-sama giving special orders to Turel and me, asking for the extermination of the two heiresses' Peerages in order to test our new anti-Devil weaponry. Once the Devils send out search parties to investigate the aftermath of the battle, they will conveniently discover those orders while analyzing the encrypted communication magic circle in the remnants of our bases in Minano.]

[Said bases will have been destroyed in order to prevent information leaks.] Turel smirked. [Alas, it seems we will not be thorough enough though. Such a terrible blunder on our part.]

"Excellent." Kokabiel smiled. "I will continue to monitor Grigori Headquarters and keep everyone in the dark alongside our allies for as long as possible. I'm leaving the eradication of the Devils to you two. With any luck, this incident will be enough to trigger the Second Great War we are striving towards if we play this just right."

[We will not disappoint you, Kokabiel-sama.]

[These Devils are as good as dead.]

The holographic images of Turel and Zephon disappeared, leaving a smiling Kokabiel sitting alone in the chamber.

The following night…

The Occult Research Club and the Student Council had all gathered in the library that served as the former's temporary base, gazing at a large holographic projection of the city.

"Shouldn't be long…" Rias muttered. "Assuming they haven't discovered the seals, we should be getting a reading any second now. What about the team dispatched from Grigori, Sona? Do we have eyes on them as well?"

"As agreed, they have not entered Minano." Sona said. "They have set up a base at the summit of the nearby mountain and have dispatched patrols in the surrounding area. Our familiars are observing them as we speak. I assume yours are in Kuoh?"

"Yes." Rias said. "We cannot leave our territory completely unprotected after all. I've also contacted Kiyome-san and asked her to have some of her beasts patrol the borders as well."

"Kiyome-san?" Sona said. "I'm surprised she agreed to this. She's not very forthcoming when it comes to dealing with us."

"She owned me one from a previous contract, so we are even with this." Rias said. "Plus, she understands the gravity of the situation and doesn't wish for Kuoh to turn into a warzone any more than we do."

"True enough."

While the two heiresses were discussing, Koneko turned to Takeshi.

"…How's your body, Senpai?" Koneko asked. "All good?"

"Just like you all insisted, I spent all day and night resting." Takeshi said. "Now I'm back at full strength and ready to kick some Fallen Angel butt!"

[Yes, let me out!] Grendel's voice echoed. [Let's enjoy another glorious slaughterfest together!]

[I don't think so.] Nidhogg said. [You've had your fill of fun, Grendel. It's my turn to feast on the corpses of our foes.]

[Don't get in my way, Nidhogg!]

[You took the words right out of my mouth, Grendel!]

While Takeshi did his best to tune out the arguing Evil Dragons in his head, a certain area of the holographic projection lit up.

"There you are." Momo, who was observing the projection alongside Reya, said. "Location confirmed. The signal is coming from a partially buried parking building in the northeast area of Minano."

"They set up shop in the region that was hit the hardest, eh?" Rias said. "Looks like your luck has ran out though. Sona, I'm leaving observation to you. Also, once we begin the attack, notify the Grigori team that we've discovered the location of the enemy and tell them to be on alert for any stragglers. If they're really on our side, they can be useful in that way."

"Leave it to me."

"Alright, everyone." Rias said, a fierce expression on her face. "It's time to retaliate at last. Let's blow them away all at once!"

[Yes!]

All Devils shouted as one. Forming a magic circle beneath her, Rias beckoned at her Peerage to join her, with the magic circle transporting them on top of a damaged block-of-flats that overlooked the parking building.

"It looks like only the first three floors are visible from here." Yuuto remarked as he conjured a Demonic Sword with a large eye on its guard, bringing it near his eyes and observing the building through it. "I'm detecting four more floors that are buried underneath. There's also some movement from several heat signatures, but I can't make out their numbers. There's some sort of interference."

"Not surprising if this is the enemy's main base." Rias said. "Koneko, can you discern anything else with your Senjutsu?"

"…I can sense the holy aura of Fallen Angels." Koneko frowned, her cat ears twitching. "Five at least. There's also a… disturbance in the lowest level. It feels the same as it did around the dam."

"Pandora." Takeshi said. "Are the Fallen Angels trying to do something with her ability? Maybe cause another natural disaster, but on a grander scale?"

"If that's their plan, then we came at just the right time to ruin it." Akeno said, a small magic circle in her hand. "The surrounding area seems to be deserted, and I've set up a human-warding and silencing barrier around us, so we're good to go. How should we proceed, President?"

"Well, since we have a clear shot at the top floors, I say we take it." Rias grinned as she formed a large sphere of Destruction in her hand. "We'll clear a path and charge straight to the lower floors."

"Starting things with a bang, eh?" Takeshi grinned, summoning Mayhem Striker. "Just the way I like it."

Following Takeshi and Rias's example, Yuuto conjured a large number of Blast Ogres next to him, with Koneko grabbing some of them, while Akeno summoned a large magic circle crackling with electricity.

"Fire!"

Following Rias's command, everyone unleashed their attacks. The first three floors were struck by a combination of Destruction, thunder, ash waves and explosions that ravaged them. Takeshi thought he heard some agonized cries coming from the direction of the parking building, but couldn't tell for sure.

"That should be enough for a greeting." Rias said as the Peerage ceased their attacks. "Let's go, everyone."

Spreading their wings, the Devils took flight and landed at the topmost floor of the wrecked building. Jumping inside one of the many holes, they landed on the damaged second floor, where fires were still burning as a result of their attacks and several corpses could be seen scattered throughout the area.

"Damn Devils!"

Two Exorcists, who had survived the earlier barrage, raised their pistols and fired at the group. Rias clicked her fingers, forming a defensive magic circle that shielded them from the bullets. Before the Exorcists could react, Yuuto had rushed at them, his Demonic Sword tearing through their bodies with ease.

"…There doesn't seem to be anything else on this floor or below it." Koneko remarked. "I'm sensing human auras rushing from the lower floors to the fourth floor though. The Fallen Angel signatures aren't moving from the bottom floor. There's also someone else there. Pandora probably."

"In that case, let's take a shortcut."

Takeshi said as his ash wave slashed the floor, opening a large hole. The ashes moved down, opening another hole on the floor below. Takeshi jumped into it, with the rest of the Peerage following after him. They landed on the fourth floor just as a large number of Exorcists clad in battle armors were rushing in from the lower floors.

"There they are!" One of them shouted. "Waste these filthy creatures!"

The Exorcists raised their rifles and opened fire, with the Gremory Peerage rushing behind concrete pillars and scattered debris to take cover. Taking note of the scattered wrecked cars, Yuuto smirked as he conjured a new Demonic Sword.

"Let's do it, Magnet Pulse!"

Yuuto pointed the sword at the cars, lifting them up and tossing them at the Stray Exorcists. They screamed and scrambled out of the way as cars rained on them. Taking advantage of this, Takeshi formed two long, curved ash blades around his axe's two ends and threw it. The spinning ash wheel tore through six Stray Exorcists with ease before returning to Takeshi's hand. At the same time, Koneko closed the distance and began pummeling the opponents. Each strike would result in an Exorcist spitting blood and falling to their knees. A group of them raised their rifles and aimed at Koneko with the intent to bring her down.

"Ara, ara, I can't let you do that, you naughty children."

Akeno smirked as she shot several icicles at the rifles' muzzles, jamming them and causing them to blow up when fired. Yuuto conjured a new Demonic Sword and stabbed it on the ground, with a large amount of water gushing out of it and dousing the Exorcists' feet. Before they could react, the electrical charge from Yuuto's lightning-clad Demonic Sword and Akeno's thunder was transmitted through the water, taking down a dozen Stray Exorcists in one go.

"Damn it!"

Six Exorcists cursed as they pulled out their light swords and charged at the Gremory group. However, several ash tendrils wrapped around their feet, sending them tumbling down. Before they could recover, Takeshi landed in their midst, with Mayhem Striker tearing through armor and flesh with ease. An Exorcist aimed his pistol at Takeshi's blind spot, only to receive a demonic power-clad kick that shattered it. With a swing of his axe, Takeshi decapitated the attacking Exorcist.

"Focus on the Gremory wench!"

Another Stray Exorcist shouted as eight of them aimed their high-powered rifles at Rias, shooting powerful light beams at her. However, Rias was unfazed, her defensive magic circles blocking the attacks with ease. Pointing two fingers at the Exorcists, Rias started shooting a hail of bullet-shaped Destruction orbs. Despite their lower power, they were sufficient in breaking through the Exorcists' defensive gear, leaving their bodies full of holes as they fell dead to the ground. An Exorcist materialized a large shield with a defensive magic circle on it and tried to ram Rias, only to receive an oversized Destruction sphere that vaporized his right side in one go.

"Sorry, but we can't waste too much time with you!"

Yuuto said as he conjured another Demonic Sword, releasing copious amounts of smoke at another group of Exorcists. While they were disoriented, Yuuto formed his segmented Demonic Sword, Snake Fang, and the rapier-shaped Starlight Flash, shattering their weapons with the former and piercing through their hearts or heads with the latter.

A few steps away from Yuuto, Koneko had lifted a large piece of debris, using it as a makeshift shield to protect herself from the Exorcists' light rounds. Once she had approached closer enough, she tossed it at them, forcing them to scurry. They didn't have a chance to go far as Koneko pounced on them, the faint aura of Touki enveloping her fists as she broke an Exorcist's neck. Another received a double knee facebreaker, while a third was grabbed by his legs, with Koneko flying up and slamming him head first on the concrete. A fourth pulled out a pair of light whips and swung them, but Koneko weaved between them and reached her opponent, using her tail to trip him. She then smashed her fists on his chest, caving it in.

"Ufufu, this is like shooting fish in a barrel."

Akeno said with a beatific smile, shooting thunderbolt after thunderbolt at the Exorcists. Each strike was lethal, turning the Exorcists into a charred mess. Clasping her hand together, she formed a mud torrent that swallowed a group of seven Stray Exorcists and hindered their moves, allowing Rias to finish them off with her Power of Destruction.

"What the Hell is wrong with these Devils!?" An Exorcist cried out. "They're way too strong!"

"Fall back! Fall back!"

Seven Exorcists turned around and tried to retreat, only for Takeshi to land in front of them.

"You won't escape!"

Raising his axe high, Takeshi summoned an ash twister around him that consumed five of the screaming Exorcists, sending them crashing on the ceiling with numerous burns and cuts throughout their bodies. The other two aimed a pair of Gatling guns at Takeshi, only for the young Devil to channel demonic power in his vocal chords and let out an aria, blasting them through a half-broken pillar and into a wall. The Exorcists crumbled to the ground, their armor broken and blood dripping from their ears, eyes and mouth.

"…What was that?" Koneko said as she approached Takeshi, rubbing her eyes. "Even my ears are ringing."

"A new move I, cough, thought of." Takeshi said, coughing a bit. "Channeled demonic power in my voice to create a powerful sound blast. Neat, eh?"

"…So, you've finally found some use for that demon voice of yours, Senpai." Koneko shuddered. "I feel sorry for these Exorcists."

"No kidding." Yuuto said. "I wasn't in the line of fire, and I still felt my body trembling."

"That just proves this move's effectiveness." Takeshi remarked, and then frowned. "But Demon Voice… It's not a bad name, though I'm leaning towards Death Phoneme…"

Meanwhile, Rias and Akeno had sent out several orbs of light, illuminating the entirety of the floor.

"There doesn't seem to be anyone left alive here apart from us." Akeno said. "Can you sense anything, Koneko?"

"…No." Koneko said. "Only the Fallen Angels and Pandora in the last floor."

"Then let's not keep them waiting." Rias said. "Takeshi, if you would."

"With pleasure."

Takeshi summoned an ash wave once again, opening three more holes in the floors below that led straight to the bottom floor. The Gremory group jumped down, with Rias and Akeno having conjured defensive magic circles around them to shield the group in case of a surprise attack. They landed on the parking building's seventh floor, encountering a peculiar scene.

"Welcome, Devils. I would like to say we were expecting you, but that would be a lie."

Standing a few meters away from the Gremory Peerage were five Fallen Angels, matching sinister smirks on their faces. Right behind them was a large magic circle formation, with Pandora kneeling in its middle. Floating around the formation was a large number of multi-colored orbs, illuminating the entire area with an eerie light.

"Fallen Angel Turel and his lackeys, I assume." Rias said. "I'm sure introduction are pointless from our part, so I'll get straight to the point. Why are you targeting us?"

"We are Fallen Angels, and you are Devils." Turel said. "We are simply fulfilling our purpose. Does there need to be another reason for us to do battle?"

"Even though your leaders are opposed to war?"

"First time I'm hearing that." Turel said. "Are you perhaps misunderstanding something, Rias Gremory? The hatred for you Devils runs quite deep in Grigori. That's why we've come here to eliminate you and strike yet another blow against your detestable race."

"Looks like you are fanatics alright." Rias narrowed her eyes. "In that case, I'll make things very simple for you. Stop whatever ritual you're trying to conduct and surrender along with the girl back there. If not, you will face the consequences."

"You know that's not going to happen." Turel said as he spread his four wings and twelve light spears formed around him, hovering in a circular formation. "If you want to stop us, then you're going to have to kill us!"

"That can be arranged!"

The one who said that was Akeno, launching several thunderbolts at the Fallen Angels. They all dodged the attack, with Turel countering by throwing his light spears at the Devils, forcing them to split up. Each Fallen Angel went after a specific Devil, with Turel facing Rias as he sent several light spears at her while she countered with a hail of Destruction bullets.

"Alright!" Mittelt laughed, pulling out an ornate gun and aiming it at Koneko. "Let's try out this new toy!"

Several bullets were shot at Koneko, who evaded them with ease and aimed a punch at Mittelt. However, her instinct screamed at her to dodge. She barely avoided the bullets, which had curved and were aiming at her back. Just as they passed by her, they exploded, releasing smoke that temporarily blinded her. A cruel smile appeared on Mittelt's lips as she conjured a light spear and threw it at Koneko. Using her Senjutsu, Koneko sensed the incoming attack and leaped back, only for more bullets to come at her.

"Annoying…"

Koneko grimaced as she spread her wings and took flight, with both Mittelt and several more bullets in pursuit. Some distance away from the two, Yuuto was facing Dohnaseek, who was armed with a pair of scissor-shaped blades that had two deformed heads placed at the bottom of the hilt and were oozing dark aura.

"Quite the unique weapon you've got there, Fallen Angel!" Yuuto remarked as yet another of his blades was shattered by Dohnaseek's blades. "Not used to something like that from you people!"

"It's not our usual style, but it gets the job done!"

Dohnaseek performed a number of thrusts, which Yuuto evaded by the skin of his teeth. Discarding his shattered blade, Yuuto conjured another Demonic Sword, whose blade shot forward, aiming at Dohnaseek's head. However, the Fallen Angel, as if having predicted this move, placed one of his swords in the trajectory of the launched blade, deflecting it.

Yuuto continued with Rust Order, hammering the scissor blades at various spots. However, the Demonic Sword seemed to have no effect on Dohnaseek's blades. Yuuto was forced to fall back once the Fallen Angel's blades started getting past his guard and coming a little too close to his body. Conjuring several daggers and throwing them at Dohnaseek to distract him, Yuuto created another sword as he examined his opponent.

What's going on? Yuuto thought. It's almost as if he can see the future. Is this those peculiar blades' ability?

Yuuto didn't have time to think this further as Dohnaseek attacked him once again.

"Stand still, damn you!"

At the other end of the area, Akeno snarled as she launched thunderbolt after thunderbolt at Kalawarner. However, all of them missed their mark as the Fallen Angel seemed to have the ability to move from place to place in an instant. Kalawarner launched a light spear at Akeno, who threw another thunderbolt at it. However, the spear vanished mid-flight and reappeared on Akeno's left, with her quickly conjuring a defensive magic circle to shield herself. Upon striking the magic circle, the light spear exploded, blowing Akeno to the side. She shot several fireballs randomly around her, but Kalawarner avoided them with ease.

"What's the matter, little girl!?" Kalawarner grinned. "Our game of tag getting a little too much for you!?"

"Shut up!"

Akeno conjured a large number of icicles around her, throwing them at Kalawarner. The Fallen Angel snickered as she vanished from her spot once again and appeared above Akeno, kicking her in the head and sending her crashing down. The young Queen called upon her Knight trait on instinct, rolling out of the way and evading the three light spears shot at her.

"This…is bad…"

Akeno wheezed, her eyes darting around as she struggled to keep track of Kalawarner who was appearing and disappearing at random all around her.

"Is that all the infamous Evil Dragon User's got!? I'm disappointed!"

Takeshi, who was facing the Fallen Angel Raynare, grimaced as he was pushed back by yet another wind blast shot by the silver gauntlets she was wearing. She followed with a pair of light spears aimed at his legs, which Takeshi shattered with a swing of Mayhem Striker. He rushed at Raynare, only for the Fallen Angel to launch another blast of pressurized air towards the ground, launching herself up and sending Takeshi skidding backwards. She followed with more light spears, which Takeshi parried, falling back as he did so.

"However, you're not bad-looking." Raynare said, licking her lips. "How about you become my plaything? I promise to show you a wonderful time."

"Sorry, but you're a bit too rotten for my tastes." Takeshi said. "I think I'll just eradicate you without fail! Promotion, Queen!"

As the characteristic of his Evil Pieces changed, Takeshi launched several spinning ash spears at Raynare, followed by an oversized ash claw. However, Raynare surrounded herself with a wind barrier, scattering the ashes, and shot a light spear at Takeshi that spilt into several dagger-shaped light weapons. Takeshi had the ash-enveloped Mayhem Striker spin in front of him, deflecting the light daggers. Raynare followed with a powerful wind blast that blew away Mayhem Striker and sent Takeshi flying, with the young Devil crashing on a pillar. Summoning the axe back to his hand, Takeshi shot several crescent-shaped ash blades at Raynare, which the Fallen Angel also scattered.

"It's no use." Raynare smiled. "You should have taken my offer, brat. Now, you will join the rest of your comrades in death!"

[This is a waste of time, whelp.] Nidhogg snorted. [Use the Balance Breaker and wipe this lowly crow off the face of the Earth already.]

[No, let me out!] Grendel bellowed. [I will turn her into a charred mass of flesh no problem!]

Both of you, shut up!

Takeshi shouted in his thoughts as he used his Knight trait to evade Raynare's wind blast.

"Looks like this is the end, Rias Gremory." Turel said, controlling several light spears like autonomous attack units and having them come at Rias from various directions. "Your pathetic servants are about to fall, and when they do, you're next. And after you, it's the Sitri Peerage's turn."

"Fool." Rias scoffed at Turel's words as she vaporized two light spears with an orb of Destruction while shielding herself from another with a defensive magic circle. "If you think that my servants are weak enough to be taken down by your petty tricks, you're in for a rude awakening!"

True enough, the tide of the battle seemed to be slowly shifting all around them. Akeno, who was starting to get exhausted from throwing elemental attacks around her to keep Kalawarner at bay, suddenly smiled, much to her opponent's surprise.

"What's this?" Kalawarner frowned, forming a dense light spear in her hand. "Are you planning something, little Devil?"

"Preparations complete."

Akeno said as she snapped her fingers. A large number of magic circles formed around the two combatants, creating a makeshift cage, with four more forming around Akeno. She then shot two powerful thunderbolts that struck the magic circles and started ricocheting off them at random.

"This is…!" Kalawarner cried out with a panicked expression as she struggled to evade the random attacks by teleporting from place to place. "You maggot! You set this up while launching all these spells at me!"

"Guilty as charged~." Akeno smirked as a thunderbolt ricocheted off one of the magic circles in front of her. "I've already grasped the range of your mysterious teleporting ability, about ten meters in all directions. I don't know if you can use it indefinitely, but if you can't, it's a matter of whether your concentration or your usage of it runs out first."

"Damn you!"

Kalawarner tried to throw a light spear at Akeno, but was struck by one of the ricocheting thunderbolts, letting out a cry of pain. Before she could gather herself, she was struck once again, falling on the ground with burns throughout her body.

"Game over."

Akeno said, conjuring a rock spear and piercing Kalawarner's chest. The Fallen Angel let out a strangled cry before drawing her last breath.

"Too fast…!"

Dohnaseek said through gritted teeth, beads of sweat running down his brow as he struggled to defend himself against Yuuto's assault, who was coming at him from every angle possible. The Knight had conjured Gravity Nail on one hand, using it to reduce his own weight, and Cyclone Call, his wind Demonic Sword, to reduce air resistance. This combo had enhanced his speed to the point where Dohnaseek was incapable of following his movements even with the limited precognitive ability of his blades. He had already received numerous cuts throughout his body, with blood gushing out of them.

"This is the end!"

Yuuto exclaimed as he formed a third Demonic Sword, clamping it with his teeth. Dohnaseek saw his next move, but was once again too slow. One of his blades was struck by Gravity Nail, sending it sinking into the floor, the other was blown away by Cyclone Call, and Yuuto's third sword, a bone-like long blade, was surrounded by demonic power and was aimed at the Fallen Angel's throat, severing his head from his body. Dohnaseek's headless corpse collapsed on the floor, with Yuuto standing triumphant above him.

"Damn pipsqueak! Give it up already!"

Mittelt cried out in frustration, her bullets failing to inflict any damage to Koneko once again. Instead of using it for enhancing her attacks, the young Nekomata had spread her Touki throughout her body instead, raising her defense even further. Because of that and her Rook trait, Mittelt's bullets had been rendered useless, bouncing harmlessly off Koneko's body.

"…Look who's talking."

Koneko said with an annoyed expression, tearing out a half-broken pillar next to her and tossing it at Mittelt. The Fallen Angel responded with a light spear, shattering the pillar. A fireball that came out of the ensuing smoke cloud struck her gun, melting the muzzle. Before Mittelt could react, Koneko was upon her, her ki having gathered in her fingers and forming long claws. She slashed the Fallen Angel's body, opening several deep gashes as Mittelt screamed in pain. Without missing a beat, Koneko turned around and grabbed her face, smashing her on the ground. She then twisted Mittelt's neck, breaking it.

"…That's that."

Koneko said, wiping her hands clean of the Fallen Angel's blood.

"Looks like I can't afford to slack off here!"

Takeshi exclaimed, a wide grin on his face as he charged at Raynare. The Fallen Angel aimed her gauntlets at him, releasing another powerful wind blast with the intent of blowing him back again. However, several ash talons formed around Takeshi and connected to his body before burrowing into the floor, keeping him anchored. Gathering a large amount of demonic power in his feet, Takeshi generated an explosion beneath him that propelled him straight to Raynare.

"What!?"

Her hastily constructed light spear was shattered by Takeshi's vertical slash, with his following horizontal slash cutting through Raynare's gauntlets and opening deep gashes on her arms. The Fallen Angel screamed as she fell on her knees.

"Victory was never an…ugh!"

Just as he was about to finish her off, Takeshi winced and stumbled, feeling a familiar presence trying to invade his mind.

[This bloodlust!] Grendel laughed. [Good, that's very good, whelp! Let me consume that passion of yours and show you how it's done!]

"Get…the Hell out, Grendel!"

Takeshi roared, dismissing both Mayhem Striker and Cataclysm Zone. Taking advantage of his distracted state, Raynare spread her wings and flew away through the hole in the ceiling. Turel, who was still fighting Rias, showed an irritated expression upon seeing the state of the battle around him.

"Useless, all of you." Turel grimaced. "And the formation still isn't complete… Since I don't fancy dying just yet, I think I'll take my leave now!"

Turel took out a small sphere from his pocket and crushed it. A bright light was emitted from it, temporarily blinding Rias and the others. Before they could recover, Turel had also escaped.

"Blast it!" Rias cursed, conjuring a communication magic circle. "Sona, can you hear me? It's Rias. We took care of most of the enemies, but two of them escaped."

[I'll contact the Grigori agents outside.] Sona said. [They may be able to catch up to them and take them down.]

"Please do." Rias said, dismissing the communication magic circle and landing next to Akeno, who was examining the magic circle formation. "What have you got for me, Akeno?"

"It's just as Takeshi-kun suspected." Akeno said. "The magic circle is designed to draw out and amplify the girl's power. If it was complete, the Fallen Angels could cause a natural disaster on par with one caused by the Longinus Zenith Tempest."

"That might have been enough to kill us if we were caught in it." Rias said. "Can we disable the formation?"

"It shouldn't be too hard." Akeno said, demonic power gathering in her hand. "I've seen Fallen Angel magic circles before. President, I need you to channel demonic power at the exact areas I'm about to show you."

"Alright."

Both girls got to work, channeling their demonic power at various parts of the formation. Meanwhile, Takeshi, Koneko and Yuuto were surveying the area, still on high alert for any potential attacks or other surprises. After a couple of minutes, Rias and Akeno's work was done, with the magic circle formation shattering and the Spirits surrounding it vanishing into thin air. In the midst of all that, Pandora remained unresponsive as the Devils cautiously approached her.

"…You stopped it, huh?"

Pandora said, raising her head. Her eyes briefly glowed as almost every member of the Gremory Peerage relaxed at once.

"So beautiful…" Yuuto said, looking like he was in a daze. "I…we should let her go, President."

"Yes…" Rias murmured. "She shouldn't—"

"Oi, snap out of it!"

Takeshi shouted. Realizing that Pandora had done something to his friends, he dashed towards her and knocked her out before anyone could react. The effect was instantaneous as everyone flinched, looking like they had just awoken from some stupor.

"…What…what was that?" Koneko said, a troubled expression on her face. "I felt…compelled to offer everything to that girl."

"It looks like the Fallen Angels left out a few things regarding Pandora's abilities." Yuuto said. "This feeling…it was almost like the time that Succubus charmed me."

"There seems to be some sort of explosive spell cast on her." Akeno said, placing her fingers on Pandora's throat and revealing a pattern comprised of arcane symbols. "It's also designed to monitor the subject and inflict pain. More Fallen Angel magic from what I can tell. Shouldn't be too hard to dispel that as well."

Akeno traced the symbols, with them being erased once her finger passed over them. After a few seconds, the pattern vanished completely.

"It should be safe now." Akeno said, wiping her brow. "However, I'm not sure what other spells the Fallen Angels might have placed on her. We should confine her in our temporary base until we're sure there are no other surprises in her."

"Agreed." Rias said. "For now, she's our captive. Akeno, restrain her, and then prepare the teleportation magic circle."

"At once, President."

While Akeno was busy with securing their prisoner, Rias received a call from Sona.

[Rias, it's me.] Sona said. [Our familiars caught sight of a short battle taking place outside Minano. Zephon intercepted the two fleeing Fallen Angels and eliminated them. We've just received word from him confirming the kill.]

"That's good to hear." Rias said. "We've captured Pandora, which means that this incident might be coming to an end. The others and I will join you shortly."

[Understood. See you soon.]

"Was that the Student President?" Takeshi asked. "What did she say?"

"Apparently, the Fallen Angel Turel and that female Fallen that escaped were killed by Zephon." Rias said. "Once Pandora is conscious, we'll see if she can shed some more light on all this."

"One can only hope…"

Takeshi muttered as he and the rest of the Gremory Peerage stepped inside the transportation magic circle along with the unconscious Pandora, vanishing from the area.

This concludes Chapter 13. A difficult chapter to write for a variety of reasons, so I'm glad it's finished. Regarding that bit of trivia at the beginning of the chapter, the part about Fallen Angels and their relation with holy and demonic power is complete headcanon. The whole Angels are vulnerable to demonic power thing, I believe that was mentioned somewhere in canon, but I'm not sure so take it with a grain of salt.

Well, that's all for now. As always, please read, review, favorite and follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
