Garfield
Garfield isn't stupid. He knows that peace never lasts long, but he's still surprised how quickly it fades. They'd already been through so much; couldn't the universe just give them a break? Why did they have to go through so much when other kids didn't?
It's nearly time for lunch when the library door opens. Ms. Kinders enters with a man in a striking police uniform and Mr. Wayne.
"Good morning children," Ms. Kinders smiles. Raven gets up and goes to the stacks. "Raven?"
"Just leave her," Richard gets up from his seat at the table. Garfield stands up too.
"This is police chief Gordon and I believe you remember Mr. Wayne," Ms. Kinders says. The police chief approaches their table and puts a hand out for Richard to shake, then Garfield.
"I wanted to come down here today to thank you young people for your response to the unfortunate events that happened at the charity ball." Chief Gordon says. He reaches into his suit jacket and pulls out three small white boxes. He hands one to Richard, then Garfield and puts the last one on the table.
"Why are you giving me this?" Richard opens his box first. It's a medal. Like the kind Batman and the Justice League receive all the time on TV in front of city hall.
"You all acted with bravery and valor. Garfield Logan, you risked your own life to give Vinnie Grigori first aid. Richard Greyson, you shielded your friend from the first shots and then, after the trauma kept a level head and continued to look after your friends. That is no short feet. Raven Roth, you protected over seventy people from the bomb blasts, including the Flash." Garfield can't see where Raven is, but he doubts that she appreciates the police Chief's thanks. Richard clearly doesn't.
"We just did what anyone would do," Garfield shrugs. The police chief smiles.
"You're a fine young man. I hope that you know that." Chief Gordon says.
"I don't mean to be rude, but if that's all..." Richard glances at the shelves again.
"I understand, your friend is not interested in the attention this brought on." Chief Gordon frowns. He looks at the shelves too and so does Mr. Wayne.
"Actually... With all the attention, there have been more people hanging out around the house... Reporters and weird people and stuff... Could you maybe arrange for your officers to drive by sometimes? At night?" Garfield asks. Richard gives him a grin and he knows it was the right thing to say.
"Already in the works." Chief Gordon says. He gives Garfield another big smile.
"Garfield, you're so thoughtful," Ms. Kinders pats him on the shoulder.
"It was good seeing you again," Mr. Wayne says. He looks at Richard, but Richard seems to be ignoring him.
"You too," Garfield says for Richard. The adults leave and Garfield goes over to the shelves where Raven has folded herself into a tiny ball.
"They're gone," he says. She doesn't move. He touches her arm, but she still doesn't move. Richard grabs his shoulder and pulls him away. Best to just let her sulk when she's like this.
Garfield looks at his medal and isn't sure how to feel. Part of him is happy. He's a hero now, like Batman. He saved someone's life. Because he acted like a hero Mr. and Mrs. Dayton had come to see him. Was all that worth the price of what happened? He looks at Richard. Richard is holding his medal too.
