Chapter 18 – Bond

"Your movements are slowing down. Is that all you've got, Takeshi-sama?"

"Not by a long shot, Grayfia-san!"

Takeshi shouted as he aimed an uppercut at Grayfia, who took half a step back to evade it before countering with a demonic power-clad kick that sent Takeshi flying straight into a large boulder, a small burn appearing on his chest. Although Berserk Devastator was his equipped Sacred Gear, Grayfia seemed capable of getting past his armored skin almost effortlessly.

"Damn it…"

Takeshi winced as he got up, his eyes focused on his opponent. It was the afternoon of the fourteenth day ever since the Gremory group's training had begun. Takeshi and Grayfia were sparring near the entrance of one of the nearby caverns as a means for the former to acquire some more experience and attempt to get Berserk Devastator under control. So far, his attempts had proven fruitless for the most part.

After a brief lull, Takeshi ignited his greaves, launching himself in the air and landing next to Grayfia. He aimed a roundhouse kick at her, but the maid blocked him with her forearm before grabbing his leg. Spinning him around, she smashed him on the ground. Rolling out of the way, Takeshi evaded her punch, which opened a small crater. Swinging his leg, he unleashed a crescent-shaped wave of fire that Grayfia dispersed with a swipe of her hand. She aimed a thrust at his abdomen, but Takeshi crossed his arms to defend. The blow was still powerful enough to send him skidding backwards.

"Good thing I can't feel pain, or else I'd be screaming right now…"

Takeshi remarked with a lopsided smile as he dropped into a stance once again. Despite his persistence, he had been unable to even scratch Grayfia so far, let alone deliver a solid blow. He was well aware of her strength, but it stung his pride nonetheless.

[Your strength is still lacking, whelp!] Grendel said. [Let me play with her in your stead! I will demonstrate to you how to properly fight if you want to annihilate your opponent!]

Takeshi flinched and screamed as he felt Grendel's consciousness surfacing, attempting to assert dominance once again. Taking note of his state, Grayfia clicked her tongue as she formed a magic circle, with several energy chains shooting out of it and binding Takeshi. Ignoring the youth's outraged howls, Grayfia snapped her fingers. The chains shocked him, with Berserk Devastator and Cataclysm Zone dematerializing. Takeshi fell on his knees, hissing as he grasped his aching chest.

"No good…" Takeshi groaned, doing his best to ignore the stabs of pain that came rushing at him all at once. "It's no good at all. I can keep myself under control for a bit longer…but once Grendel becomes active, I can't push him back."

Takeshi stood up, stifling a cry of pain as he raised his fists.

"One more time, Grayfia-san." Takeshi said. "I can still go on."

"I'm not sure that's advisable." Grayfia frowned. "You look like you're ready to pass out at any moment. Perhaps a break is in order."

"One more time." Takeshi insisted, his gaze unwavering. "Please."

Grayfia sighed at the young man's determined expression.

"Rias-sama had mentioned you were stubborn, but I never thought it would be to such a degree." Grayfia said as a thin sheet of demonic power surrounded her body. "Very well. But this is the last round. You've tortured your body enough for one day."

Takeshi nodded, summoning Cataclysm Zone and Berserk Devastator. Taking a deep breath and doing his best to remain calm so as not to give Grendel any footholds, he observed his opponent once again. Grayfia wasn't moving an inch, but even so, the pressure she was exuding was almost overwhelming. However, he refused to be deterred.

Let's go with this!

Takeshi charged, his fists raised. Grayfia also raised her arms to defend, but then Takeshi came to a halt all of a sudden.

"Promotion, Bishop!"

As the Evil Pieces within him adjusted themselves, Takeshi thrust his arm forward, unleashing a massive wave of fire at Grayfia. The older Devil was unperturbed, forming a large defensive magic circle to shield herself. Several fireballs also flew at her from behind the conflagration, but missed their mark and went past her. Her instincts warned her of something amiss as the conflagration subsided, but at that moment, a tremor that shook the area caused her to stumble.

"There!"

Takeshi, who had stomped on the ground and had caused the tremor, shouted. The fireballs that had flown past Grayfia had stopped in midair, but now aimed at her back, bombarding her position. Not wasting this chance, Takeshi shot fireball after fireball, finishing with a powerful flame blast that engulfed the entire area, melting the rocks all around.

"How was…that…?"

Takeshi wheezed out, feeling exhausted from the exertion.

"Not bad. I did not expect you to use the Bishop's trait there and attack me from long-range."

Grayfia's voice was heard from within the smoke cloud. Once it dispersed, it revealed a cluster of half-melted ice pillars, with Grayfia standing in their midst. Upon taking a closer look at her, Takeshi noticed that an ember was dancing at the hem of her dress, which she extinguished with a small stream of water.

"I did it!" Takeshi cheered. "It's not much, but I managed to mark you at last, Grayfia-san! Next, I will—"

Before he could say anything else, Takeshi doubled over, spitting out a mix of blood and saliva. His Sacred Gear dematerialized, leaving him gasping for air as the feeling of pain struck him at full force once again. Gritting his teeth and refusing to cry out, Takeshi forced himself into a sitting position.

"This is the limit, Takeshi-sama." Grayfia said, offering him a bottle of water. "Any more and your life might be in danger."

"Thank you…Grayfia-san…" Takeshi wheezed out, downing the bottle in one go. "While I'm nowhere near mastering Berserk Devastator…at least I'm starting to get used to the increased gravity and the hypoxic environment. My endurance seems to have increased as well."

"You've worked hard, Takeshi-sama." Grayfia said. "Almost too hard, I would say. Are you that driven to defeat Riser-sama that you'd risk damaging your body beyond repair? And don't get me started on all these attempts to sneak out at night for extra training."

"I thought I could escape your notice, but Grayfia-san is peerless…" Takeshi said, rubbing his neck. "It's a given that I'll do anything I can, push myself as much as possible. President's freedom is riding on this match. Not to mention, I have to become stronger if I want to move forward."

"Move forward, is it?" Grayfia said. "However, where do you wish to go?"

"Eh?"

"Blindly moving forward means that it's very possible for you to hit a wall or tumble down a cliff or end up somewhere you did not wish to go." Grayfia said. "What is the future you are aiming for, Takeshi-sama?"

"My future…?"

Takeshi frowned. All this time, he had been fighting for his survival and for his newfound friends' sake. But something told him that this wasn't the answer Grayfia was seeking. What he aimed for as a human had no bearing any more. In that case, his goal as a Devil…that was something he couldn't figure out as of yet.

"I…"

"You don't have to answer right now." Grayfia said. "However, you should put some more thought into this. The now is important, but one cannot neglect what comes next. Now then, since you're spent, how about we visit the others and see how they're doing? I would tell you to go back to the mansion and rest until dinner, but I'm sure you would remain here and keep training once I'm gone. We can't have that."

"You know me well." Takeshi grinned as he stood up. "Lead the way, Grayfia-san."

Grayfia nodded as she headed towards the forest, with Takeshi following after her.

"But man, I can't believe the sky above us is fake." Takeshi remarked as he looked at the slowly sinking sun. "Magic can do some amazing things, that's for certain."

"If you're that impressed with this, then you're going to love the Underworld, Takeshi-sama." Grayfia said. "Its sky used to be purple day and night, but the Devil Kings adjusted it and created a fake moon to mimic the human world for the Reincarnated Devils' sake. It would be terribly disorienting for them and have adverse effects on their mental health if they had to adjust to a completely different circadian cycle."

"Yeah, I can understand that." Takeshi said. "I mean, if this fake sky didn't depict the passage of day and night here, I would have completely lost track of time."

"Right."

Grayfia said. At that time, the sounds of battle could be heard ahead of them. Emerging from the forest, they arrived at a rocky terrain filled with several outcrops and small fissures. Koneko and Yuuto could be seen in the distance, fist and sword clashing against each other, while Chiharu was observing them.

"Oh, if it isn't Takeshi-san and Grayfia-san." Chiharu raised her hand in greeting. "Done with your training?"

"Reached my limit to be accurate." Takeshi said with a lopsided smile. "How are these two doing?"

"They're getting there." Chiharu said. "Watch for yourselves."

Takeshi and Grayfia turned their sights at the mock battle unfolding before them. Yuuto was dashing forward, his steps sure and steady as he navigated the rough terrain and attacked from multiple directions. As for Koneko, she was surrounded by a thin sheet of pale aura, deflecting Yuuto's blades with her punches and counterattacking, though the Knight was too fast for her. Just as she moved closer to him, several blades suddenly shot out from the ground and struck at her, but failed to get past her defenses.

"Yuuto-sama seems to have expanded his Sacred Gear's area of effect to a degree." Grayfia remarked as Yuuto conjured Flame Create and Cyclone Call, unleashing a large fire tornado at Koneko while several Needle Edges sprouted from the nearby rocks and shot their blades at her. "Moreover, he can move far better compared to when he started, where he would make a wrong step and stumble, showing fatal openings. Good."

"Koneko-san has also improved." Chiharu said as the white aura surrounding Koneko intensified, with her punches scattering the tornado and shattering the blades. "She can use her Touki to enhance all her physical abilties now. It's still weaker compared to focusing on an individual trait, but it'll show great results in the future once she becomes more proficient with it. She is struggling with using her heightened sensory abilties while using Touki at the same time, but we'll work on that as well."

At that moment, Yuuto jumped in the air, creating a magic circle underneath his feet to propel himself higher. Four Blast Ogres materialized around him, with Yuuto using his demonic power to launch them at Koneko. She responded by forming white orbs in her hands and throwing them at the incoming blades. The ensuing explosions shook the area and caused the three onlookers to wince.

"That's new." Takeshi remarked upon seeing Koneko's counter. "These weren't demonic power blasts, right?"

"Yes, these are ki bullets." Chiharu said. "Not as effective as direct ki transfer through contact, but still very damaging if they hit you. I've been teaching that to Koneko-san as well for more options during combat."

Takeshi nodded, returning his attention to his fellow Devils' spar. Although it seemed it could go either way, Yuuto misjudged one of Koneko's moves and lost his footing, receiving a powerful blow that sent him crashing into the ground. Before he could get up, Koneko was on top of him, ready to drive her fist into his stomach.

"That's enough!" Chiharu shouted. "The match is over! It's Koneko-san's victory."

"Still not completely used moving around in such unfavorable terrains…" Yuuto grimaced as Koneko helped him up. "That was quite the nasty blow, Koneko-chan. Feels like everything is spinning…"

"…No holding back." Koneko said. "That's what we said at the start."

"Maybe we should revise that policy…"

Yuuto groaned as Koneko brought him to Chiharu, who used her ki to stabilize him. As Yuuto let out a sigh of relief, Koneko noticed Takeshi and Grayfia, rushing to them.

"…Grayfia-san, Senpai." Koneko gazed at Takeshi, frowning. "You overdid it again, didn't you? I can tell. Your ki flow is all messed up."

"Eh, it's more of the usual." Takeshi said. "I see you guys have been making progress as well."

"I still need a lot of work." Yuuto said, letting out a relived sigh once Chiharu was finished pouring ki in him. "I have extended the range the territory I can materialize my swords in, but not by much. Not to mention, I'm still having issues navigating anomalous terrain. Keeping my focus, being mindful of the surroundings, and regulating the flow of demonic power in my feet is no small task."

"…My progress is slow as well, but it's coming along." Koneko said. "Chiharu-san is a good teacher. She's also been showing me a healing method to restore lost lifespan through ki. I'm confident I've grasped the basics, so maybe we should give it a try tomorrow."

"Oh, that's great news!" Takeshi said in an enthusiastic manner. "With this, I won't have to worry about using Dead Shore Advent. Perhaps I—"

"…Don't get carried away, Senpai." Koneko cut him off, a stern expression on her face. "Even if the healing method works, that doesn't mean you're free to damage your body however you wish."

"I know, I know." Takeshi said. "However, being able to use the Balance Breaker with a little less reserve will be a relief to be honest. Still, since there is such a healing technique, how come you're not using it on me yourself, Chiharu-san?"

"I'd…rather not." Chiharu said, a faint blush on her face. "You'll understand when we try it tomorrow."

Takeshi was curious, but decided not to press her for answers.

[How annoying.] Nidhogg growled. [Looks like I have to put in a bit more effort in order to consume your life and break your soul. Oh well, exerting myself should be a nice change of pace.]

Devil King forbid you actually gave up here, Nidhogg.

"What about Berserk Devastator?" Yuuto asked. "Any progress on that front?"

"Very little." Takeshi said, feeling his spirits sink once again. "No matter how much I push back, Grendel's hatred and bloodlust will always overwhelm me. It feels like I'm trying to alter the course of a river with my bare hands. Honestly…I'm starting to wonder if it's possible to overcome Grendel's influence at all."

"Takeshi-kun…"

"Senpai…"

Yuuto and Koneko had matching worried expressions on their faces as they looked at Takeshi, while Grayfia seemed impassive as always. Chiharu, however, had a thoughtful expression, looking as if she was pondering something.

"Takeshi-san…perhaps you're approaching this the wrong way."

"Eh?" Takeshi said. "What do you mean, Chiharu-san?"

"The way you describe Grendel's influence is very similar to what we Senjutsu practitioners feel when using our powers." Chiharu said. "We are also bombarded by the negative energies abundant in nature, which is why we are prone to go on a rampage. To push back against the torrent of malice is impossible. That's why we opt for a different approach."

"…Staying centered at all times and making our spirit unbendable." Koneko said, her eyes opening wide. "This…couldn't this work for Takeshi-senpai's case as well?"

"Exactly." Chiharu smiled. "Takeshi-san, instead of pushing back against the current, you should instead imagine yourself as a stone in the middle of the river. Let the waves of hatred wash over you and leave you behind while you remain immovable. That could be the key to overcoming Grendel."

"Make my mind and spirit immovable…" Takeshi frowned. "It could work, but I'm not sure how I'm supposed to do that."

"Several meditation exercises have been developed by sages over the course of several centuries to aid us Youkai who study Senjutsu in not losing ourselves to malice." Chiharu said. "Koneko-san has been using them so far, and so have I. My suggestion is that you devote some time from your training to study them and learn to fortify your mind. I don't know if this will work, but it's your best bet right now."

"So it would seem." Takeshi said, feeling a little hopeful. "In that case, I'll be in your care as well, Chiharu-san. I really hope this works."

"It should, but it also depends on your resolve." Chiharu said. "But I don't think there will be any problems on that front."

"Isn't that great, Takeshi-kun?" Yuuto smiled. "If all goes well, you might even manage to unlock Berserk Devastator's Balance Breaker."

"That would be nice, but I'd settle for not losing control while using Berserk Devastator at least." Takeshi said. "So, you guys are done for today as well?"

"…Yes." Koneko nodded. "It's almost time for dinner after all."

"In that case, we'll go ahead to check out how Rias-sama and the others are doing." Grayfia said. "We'll see you back at the mansion."

Leaving Chiharu, Koneko and Yuuto behind to tidy up, Takeshi and Grayfia entered the forest once again. After walking for a couple of minutes, they arrived at a waterfall pouring into a small river. Next to it, Rias, Akeno and Pandora could be seen training. The first two were flying above the waterfall and shooting Destruction and thunder at each other, while Pandora was next to the river and was manipulating the water through the aid of Water Spirits, which could be seen as small blue lights surrounding her.

"I see Akeno-sama is still not using her true power." Grayfia commented as she watched Akeno use a burst of speed to appear behind Rias and launch a thunderbolt at her, only for Rias to create a Destruction shield that blocked the blow. "This is troubling…"

"What is this about Akeno-san's true power and heritage?" Takeshi asked as Rias formed a spear of Destruction, hurling it at Akeno along with her shield, which had transformed into a spinning disk. "I've tried to ask her about it, but I haven't found the chance to yet."

"It's not my place to speak about this." Grayfia said as Akeno raised a stone wall to shield herself. "It's a sensitive and personal matter that you'd better hear from Akeno-sama herself first."

Takeshi was even more curious, but chose not to press Grayfia for answers. Chances were, he wouldn't get any. Meanwhile, Grayfia had stepped forward, clapping her hands to get everyone's attention.

"Rias-sama, Akeno-sama, Pandora-sama, that's enough for today." Grayfia said. "It's almost time for dinner."

Following Grayfia's call, Rias and Akeno ceased attacking and landed next to her. Pandora released her Spirits as well and stood up, walking up to them.

"You look terrible." Pandora remarked upon seeing Takeshi. "Pushing yourself too much again?"

"Why does everyone keep saying that?"

"Because we know your work ethic, that's why." Rias said. "I want you all to grow stronger, yes, but not destroy yourselves in the process. As important as this match is, I would never forgive myself if something irreversible happened to any of you."

"I'm sorry if I'm worrying you." Takeshi said. "But when I commit to something, I give it my one hundred percent maximum effort. That's my policy."

"I have a feeling our definitions of one hundred percent don't match…" Rias sighed, rubbing her temples. "Just…try not to accidentally kill yourself while training. Please?"

"You got it."

At that moment, Akeno snuck behind Takeshi, embracing him.

"Ah, my oasis~." Akeno smiled while resting her head on Takeshi's shoulder. "I've been so exhausted as of late. Maybe you'd be willing to give me a massage later and help me…relieve some pent-up frustrations, ufufu~?"

Akeno's smile became wider as she tightened her embrace, pressing her breasts on Takeshi's back and grinding her cheek against his.

"Well…" Takeshi muttered, struggling to keep his blush in check. "Since my Senpai is so tired, then perhaps I—"

"OK, that's enough." Pandora said, a somewhat annoyed expression on her face as she separated Akeno from Takeshi. "Joking around is all well and good, but you're causing trouble for Takeshi, Akeno-san."

"Am I?" Akeno smirked. "Because from what I could tell, he seemed to enjoy it. Oh, perhaps you're jealous, Pandora-san? Aw, you shouldn't be. There's plenty of Takeshi-kun to go around. All you have to do is ask. I'm sure he wouldn't say no to a beauty like you, ufufu~."

"He's not some object to pass around." Pandora countered. "Also, I'm not jealous or anything. I just find all this teasing a waste of time."

"Sure you aren't." Akeno said. "Also, why are you so certain I'm only teasing him, hmmm?"

"If you're trying to get a reaction out of me, you'll need to try harder." Pandora said. "I'm not so easily flustered."

"Oh, is that a challenge?" Akeno said, licking her lips. "I might just—"

"Enough bantering." Grayfia cut off Akeno. "I would like to know the results of your training so far. Pandora-sama, is the spell formula I designed to suppress the curse working well?"

"To a degree, yes, though the curse always ends up eroding the formula and slipping through it." Pandora said. "Still, it's progress. I can use my powers for longer amounts of time compared to before. Even without the formula, I can hold the curse back for a bit longer through sheer willpower. Funny how some things seem impossible only because you've never tried them before…"

"What about the issue about you being unable to use Spirits in the Rating Game?" Takeshi asked. "Any progress on that front?"

"I think I've found a solution for that as well."

Pandora said as she lifted her finger. A small number of crimson orbs emerged from it, with a small ember appearing on her fingertip afterwards.

"Since the human body is comprised of all elements to a degree, I figured I could attract and store a number of Spirits within my own." Pandora said. "I can only hold a small number of them, but it should allow me some autonomy on the battlefield. Of course, I won't be able to fire powerful attacks, since the quality and quantity of elemental attacks is dependent on the number of Spirits around me, but I'll manage somehow. Plus, I can still use whatever Spirits are present in the Rating Game Field, along with my own demonic power."

"But hosting Spirits within your body…isn't that dangerous?" Rias asked. "What happened if your curse makes them go berserk? They could tear you apart from the inside out."

"That won't happen." Pandora assured Rias. "As long as they're in a dormant state and I'm not actively using them, the curse will not trigger. Still, there's a lot of room for improvement."

"Excellent work, Pandora-sama." Grayfia said before turning to Rias. "What about you, Rias-sama? How goes your training?"

"I'm still having trouble condensing the Power of Destruction." Rias admitted. "Because of that, my constructs are brittle and lose their shape after a few seconds. The battle you saw against Akeno was my best performance so far."

"What about the Gremory clan's trait?"

"Even less progress there…" Rias let out a dispirited sigh. "I can't regulate the amount of power I unlock in myself to reduce the strain as of yet. Moreover, while I can lock someone in place, it takes a lot of energy and concentration to do so. The more I practice, the more surprised I am I managed to pull it off when fighting that contraption."

"Life or death situations can't be compared to training." Grayfia said. "Perhaps I should divide my attention between you and Takeshi-sama. If I put more pressure in you, we might see greater improvement."

"Somehow, I'm not looking forward to this…" Rias said, feeling a chill go down her spine. "Still…if that's what's needed for me to grow stronger, then I will face whatever you throw at me, Grayfia."

"That's the spirit, Rias-sama." Grayfia smiled. "As for Akeno-sama…I see there hasn't been any progress on the most important front."

Akeno said nothing, biting her lip with a frustrated expression.

"I have already said my piece before, so I feel no need to repeat myself again." Grayfia said. "Almost half the deadline has passed. You must make up your mind sooner rather than later."

"You know it's not an easy decision, Grayfia." Rias said. "Akeno has a lot of issues to work through. Forcing her like this is—"

"Life waits for no-one." Grayfia cut off Rias with a harsh look. "You have been too lenient with her, Rias-sama. It may have been acceptable thus far, but not anymore. She cannot keep running from what she is, not when Koneko-sama has embraced her true self. Holding back her master makes her a failure of a servant."

"Grayfia!" Rias shouted, a furious expression on her face. "You are overstepping your boundaries!"

As the two women glared at each other, Takeshi edged closer to Pandora.

"…Are you as lost as I am?"

"…Maybe even more." Pandora whispered back at Takeshi. "Akeno-san did seem to be struggling with something during training, but I have no idea what."

Just as it seemed that Rias and Grayfia would come into blows, Akeno stepped between them.

"Rias…it's alright." Akeno said with a low voice. "Grayfia-san is not wrong. I need to find my courage sooner rather than later…"

"Akeno…"

"I'll be heading back first with your permission to prepare dinner." Akeno said to Grayfia. "Will you help me, Pandora-san?"

"Sure thing."

Pandora said as she followed after Akeno, leaving Rias, Takeshi and Grayfia alone.

"So…are you two going to fight now or something?" Takeshi asked. "Because I don't want to get caught up in that."

"No." Grayfia said, bowing to Rias. "My apologies, Rias-sama. Perhaps I was too harsh."

"But not wrong…" Rias sighed. "Akeno's issue is a delicate matter that I hoped time would heal…but that's a luxury we no longer have. I'll talk to her later, see if I can help her in some way. If possible, could you give it a shot as well, Takeshi? Your sincerity does seem to work wonders on people at times."

"I can try, but it's a bit too difficult if I don't know what's going on exactly." Takeshi said. "Plus, with all this training and studying, there have been no opportunities to speak to her in private."

"In that case, I shall create one." Grayfia said. "Once our study session for today is complete, I will send Akeno-sama out to check the condition of the barrier. You can follow after her and speak to her then."

"Sounds like a plan." Takeshi said. "Now, as to whether Akeno-san will open up to me or not, that's something I can't tell."

"Trust me, I have a good feeling about this." Rias smiled. "Now then, let's go back to the mansion as well. I don't know about you, but I'm sore all over and famished. Dinner and a bath after that sounds wonderful."

"Ditto."

"Speaking of baths, perhaps you'd like to join us, Takeshi?" Rias suggested, a sly smile on her face. "I'm sure the rest of the girls wouldn't—"

"Absolutely not." Grayfia interrupted Rias. "The young lady of the Gremory family should not be showing her bare skin to any man other than her partner. Please excuse Rias-sama's thoughtless words, Takeshi-sama."

"It's alright, I didn't take this offer seriously." Takeshi said. "Even if all the girls in the Club were somehow alright with it, there's no way Chiharu-san would agree to this. Wasn't that your goal, President?"

"You're a bit too shrewd for your own good…" Rias grumbled. "Spoil my fun, would you?"

The trio arrived at the mansion almost at the same time as Chiharu, Yuuto and Koneko did. The group took their seats in the dining table while chatting, with Akeno and Pandora bringing in the dishes after a while. Once they had served everyone, the two girls also sat down.

[Thanks for the food!]

After everybody said that, they started digging into the bountiful meal, with Koneko and Pandora having taken the bigger portions for themselves as usual.

"This is delicious!" Takeshi remarked as he took a bite from a piece of boar meat. "I never thought wild game could taste so good! It was worth hunting those boars down, President!"

"Good to hear that my efforts weren't wasted." Rias smiled. "You should try the soba though. Pandora herself was the one that made it."

"Yes, and she was very enthusiastic about it." Akeno smirked. "I wonder if you're trying so hard because you want to appeal to a certain gentleman, ufufu~."

"That's not it!" Pandora shouted with an exasperated look. "Seriously… I just thought I should pull my weight in the Ryuugamine residence. Learning how to cook seemed like the obvious choice, since Shiori-san is usually busy with work and we eat leftovers or order takeout most of the time."

"I appreciate that, though you don't need to push yourself, Pandora." Takeshi said as he slurped some noodles, his eyes opening wide. "…On second thought, maybe push yourself a little. This is very good, certainly not something you'd expect from an amateur. I wouldn't mind eating like this every day."

"Is that so? I'm glad…"

Pandora murmured, a pleased expression on her face. Next to her, Koneko was eyeing her with a suspicious look, while Akeno was giggling.

"Where's Grayfia-san?" Yuuto asked. "Shouldn't be sitting with us? And what about Chiharu-san?"

"Grayfia insists on following the Underworld's customs, which forbid servants from sitting in the same table as their master." Rias said with an annoyed look. "She really is a stickler for the rules."

"I ran into Chiharu-san earlier, and she said she'd be heading to the baths first." Akeno said. "She'll have dinner later."

"…Never expected she would be the one training me." Koneko remarked. "Life works in strange ways."

"Tell me about it." Takeshi said. "When we first met, she was ready to crack my skull open. Our subsequent encounters during the Oni incident weren't exactly pleasant either."

"What's this about an Oni incident?" Pandora asked. "I'm kind of curious about it."

"Listen and be amazed!" Takeshi said in an enthusiastic tone. "This happened a few weeks before you joined us, Pandora. At that time, we—"

The Gremory Peerage spent the rest of the dinner recounting their battle against the Oni led by Hisaya to their newest member, who was listening to them with a rapt expression. Once they were done with both the tale and their food, and after they had taken a bath, they moved to the room that had been converted into a classroom in order to resume their studies under Grayfia's guidance.

"That should be enough for today." Grayfia said after the allotted time had passed. "You may all retire to your rooms now. Akeno-sama, if possible, I would like you to check the condition of the barrier while I regulate the environmental spells. It seems to be holding well for now, but I'd rather be absolutely certain."

"Of course."

Akeno said as she stood up, heading outside. Grayfia and Rias glanced at Takeshi, who nodded at them as he and the rest of the Peerage left the classroom and headed towards their room.

"Don't mind me and go ahead, Yuuto." Takeshi said to his roommate once they arrived in front of their room. "I need to talk to Akeno-san."

"Talk to her?" Yuuto frowned. "Is it about the issues she's been having with her powers? Was that the reason Grayfia-san sent her out to inspect the barrier?"

"That's right, and this was also President's request." Takeshi said. "She's a friend, and a person I consider important to me, so I can't bear to watch her be distraught like that. If there's something I can do for her, even if it's just listening to her troubles, I'm willing to do it."

"Then go." Yuuto said. "Akeno-san is like family to me like the rest of you. Nothing would make me happier that seeing her reconcile with her past. I would speak to her as well…but it would be rather hypocritical of me to offer advice about not letting old wounds influence you."

"One of these days, you and I also need to have a serious discussion about your past, Yuuto." Takeshi said. "What I said about Akeno-san applies to you as well."

"Perhaps we should." Yuuto smiled. "But right now, Akeno-san's matter comes first. Go."

Takeshi nodded as he exited the mansion after making sure no-one was around. Sensing the faint trail of aura that Akeno had left behind, Takeshi spread his wings and took flight as he followed after it. After a few minutes, he arrived at the edge of the barrier, where Akeno could be seen kneeling and examining one of the magic circles there. Sensing his approach, she turned her gaze to the sky.

"Takeshi-kun?" Akeno said with a quizzical look once Takeshi landed next to her. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to see you, Akeno-san." Takeshi said. "We're all alone here, so I thought this was a good opportunity to talk to you."

"Ara, ara, talk to me, you say?" Akeno said, a sly smile on her face. "What could be so important that you needed us to be away from the others? Could it be something that shouldn't be seen by them? Perhaps…something naughty? Oh my, what should I do? A poor maiden like me is all helpless before the savage Dragon eager to devour me."

"Helpless is one thing you are not." Takeshi said while grinning. "No, I'm afraid it's something that will be uncomfortable for you. Akeno-san…what exactly is this power of yours Grayfia-san keeps mentioning?"

Akeno's expression fell following Takeshi's words. If one looked at her closer, they could see that her hands had started trembling.

"I can tell this is a difficult subject for you." Takeshi said. "It's obvious that it's tearing you up inside. That's why, I want to understand your circumstances and support you in any way I can. You're an important person to me after all."

"…Are you sure about it?" Akeno said in a small voice. "You…might hate me for it. If that happened, I—"

"That will never happen." Takeshi cut off Akeno, a resolute expression on his face. "No matter what your secret is, I could never despise Akeno-san. I swear I'll accept everything about you. That's why, there's no need to be afraid or act reserved. I'm here for you, always."

Akeno seemed to ponder this for several seconds before turning to Takeshi, a hesitant expression in her face.

"You…really won't reject me, Takeshi-kun?"

"Never." Takeshi nodded. "I promise."

Akeno closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. Then, she spread her wings. While the right one was that of a Devil's, the left one—was the black, feathery wing of a Fallen Angel. Suffice to say, Takeshi was very surprised by this revelation."

"Fallen Angel…" Takeshi muttered. "Your father was a Fallen Angel, Akeno-san? You're a hybrid?"

"…That's right." Akeno said, averting her gaze. "I should apologize here for the lie I told you before. My father isn't dead…at least not in the literal sense. His name…is Baraqiel."

"Baraqiel!?" Takeshi's eyes opened wide. "Akeno-san…you are the daughter of a Fallen Angel Cadre?"

"Yes…" Akeno said. "My father…Baraqiel met my mother after he was injured during a mission in Japan."

"Injured?" Takeshi frowned. "What kind of monster was able to injure a Fallen Angel Cadre?"

"If I'm not mistaken, Baraqiel was leading an archeological survey and was attacked by a horde of hostile Youkai." Akeno said. "Disoriented and wounded, he collapsed near my mother's cottage. She chanced upon him and nursed him back to health. Eventually, they fell in love…and the end result was me."

Akeno let out a sad smile before continuing to speak.

"We were the image of a perfect family back then…though my father had to be absent for long stretches of time due to his work. It was at that time that the relationship was discovered by the Himejima family, whose members didn't take too kindly at the thought of my mother being 'soiled' by a Fallen Angel."

Akeno's expression turned bitter at that point. Recalling their previous conversations, Takeshi could guess why.

"They sent sorcerers and Onmyouji to take back my mother and drive away my father." Akeno said. "Baraqiel defeated them…but some of these people held a grudge afterwards. They informed Baraqiel's enemies of the location of our house, and they came after us. My father…wasn't there when we needed him most. Because of that, my mother was murdered in cold blood while trying to protect me. The only reason I'm still alive is because she used the last of her strength to teleport me away before setting fire to the house, taking her killers with her…"

Tears were glistering in Akeno's eyes as she grabbed her black feathers, looking like she wanted to tear them off along with her wing.

"After that…I wandered around Japan, making a living by exorcising evil spirits, until I was found out by members of my family." Akeno said. "Like I've told you before, I would have died at that time if it wasn't for Rias's intervention. She took me in and gave me a new home, making me part of her Peerage. But even then…I still couldn't get rid of these cursed wings. Well, I guess this appearance suits me and my dirtied blood."

Akeno let out a humorless laugh before turning to Takeshi.

"Pathetic, isn't it?" Akeno said with a derisive tone. "I know that Grayfia-san is right, that I can't keep running away from what I am…but I don't want to depend on that hateful power. My father's power of light…it only serves to remind me of the reason for my loss and how he failed us… More importantly, can you still accept me after seeing this, Takeshi-kun? You too have suffered at the hands of Fallen Angels just like so many other people before you. There's no way you have a good impression of them, do you?"

"Of course I don't, but that's neither here nor there." Takeshi said. "We're taking about you, the kind, stylish, mischievous, dependable and graceful Senpai of mine. You might be half-Fallen Angel, but the fact that I care about you hasn't changed one bit. Hell, if anything, you look even more beautiful and mesmerizing than usual with that black wing."

"Takeshi-kun…" Akeno said, her cheeks reddening. "Even though I have the blood of a Fallen Angel…you can forgive that?"

"There's nothing to forgive, because there's nothing to condemn you for." Takeshi said as he walked closer to Akeno, clasping her hands in his. "I understand where you're coming from in regards to your power, but ultimately, that power isn't your father's, and it's not cursed either. It's part of you, the girl called Himejima Akeno, and as such, I love it as well. That's why, nothing would make me happier than seeing you love everything about yourself as well and move forward."

Akeno said nothing at first, but then suddenly dove into Takeshi's chest, wrapping her hands around him in a tight embrace.

"A-Akeno-san!?"

Takeshi was surprised and flustered by Akeno's sudden embrace as the raven-haired girl rested her head in his chest.

"…You are unfair, Takeshi-kun." Akeno murmured, her voice barely a whisper. "If you say all this, how can I not become serious about you…?"

"What was that, Akeno-san?"

"I said, can you hold me as well?" Akeno said, staring into Takeshi's eyes. "Please…share some of your strength with me."

"If it's strength you want, you can have as much as you want."

Takeshi said as he wrapped his arms around Akeno, bringing her closer to his body. Akeno let out a content sigh as her wings wrapped around the auburn-haired youth.

"Also…one more thing…"

"What is it?"

"Can you…call me Akeno…?" Akeno said, her face beet red. "No honorifics or anything, with as much affection as possible. Please?"

Takeshi couldn't help but find her attitude adorable. Her usual 'big sister' atmosphere was gone, and her timidness made his heart skip a bit. Resolving himself, he looked into Akeno's eyes as he poured all the affection he could into his voice.

"…Akeno."

A radiant smile appeared on Akeno's face as she buried her head into his chest, snuggling up to him. The two of them remained in this position for several minutes before separating.

"Thank you, Takeshi-kun." Akeno said. "You saying that you care for me even after learning what I am, and saying that you love every part of me, even the ones I hate…it gave me some courage. I think…I can confront my power with greater resolve now. In fact…"

Akeno raised her hand towards the sky, frowning as she focused. A lightning bolt shot out of her hand, with chills going down Takeshi's spine. He could sense the unmistakable feeling of holy power coming from that attack.

"That was…" Takeshi said. "You mixed the power of light with your thunder?"

"Yes…though it still needs a lot of work." Akeno said, grimacing as she clenched her aching fingers. "But this is the first step. I…won't run away from what I am anymore."

"I'm glad." Takeshi smiled. "As expected, the cheerful and driven Akeno-san is the best."

"This is thanks to you." Akeno said. "And what kind of Senpai would I be if I didn't give you a reward for your hard work?"

Before Takeshi could say anything, Akeno kissed him on the cheek, taking a step back with a mischievous expression on her face.

"Since we have a game to focus in, this is just an advance payment." Akeno said with a sly smirk. "Look forward to the rest at a later time, ufufu~."

After saying so, Akeno spread her wings and took flight, leaving a flabbergasted Takeshi standing rooted on the spot while touching his cheek. Slapping his cheeks to shake himself off his stupor, Takeshi also spread his wings and took flight, heading back to the mansion. Unbeknownst to him, someone else had watched the exchange between him and Akeno.

"…I can't afford to take my time."

Koneko, who was hiding in the nearby foliage, said with a determined expression while clenching her fists.

The following day…

"Ow! What gives!?"

Takeshi cried out after having received a smack on his head from a thick branch.

"You weren't concentrating enough. Let's take it from the top."

The one who had spoken was Chiharu, her expression stern. It was afternoon of the fifteenth day, and the two youths had come to a clearing after Takeshi had finished the group training alongside the rest of the Gremory Peerage. He was currently attempting the meditation exercises Chiharu had suggested the previous day, but wasn't having much luck so far. More often that not, he would receive smacks on the head and would have to start all over again.

"Remember, you need to keep your focus in your center, in the pure desires within you untainted by negative thoughts or vices." Chiharu said. "If you can accomplish that, you will be unaffected by whatever malice comes your way from Grendel or the other Evil Dragons."

"Easier said than done…" Takeshi grumbled as he sat down cross-legged once again. "Will I manage to do this until the deadline?"

"That's up to you." Chiharu said. "You have the advantage of being unable to sense ki, which makes this somewhat easier for you compared to us Youkai. It's not easy being focused when you can sense an underlying current of malice at the edge of your consciousness, swirling all around you."

"Yeah, that would be distracting." Takeshi said, closing his eyes. "Let's try this once again…"

The next couple of hours passed with Takeshi struggling to focus, receiving blows from Chiharu at infrequent intervals whenever his thoughts strayed. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't maintain this state of concentration for more than a few minutes.

"That's enough for now." Chiharu said. "Just remember to practice on your own during your spare time, and especially when sparring against Grayfia-san and the others. With that done, let's move to the other portion of the training. Are you ready, Koneko-san?"

"…As ready as I'll ever be."

Koneko stepped out of the forest, heading towards the two youths. Much to Takeshi's shock, she was wearing a thin white cloth that was barely covering her private parts and nothing else. Her cat ears and tail were also visible, with the latter flicking left and right.

"Koneko-chan, that attire…"

"…It's easier to transmit ki through this." Koneko said while fidgeting. "Takeshi-senpai…should also…"

Koneko's words trailed off as her face turned beet red.

"Should also…what?"

"You should take off your shirt." Chiharu said. "Skin-to-skin contact is the most efficient way to transmit ki between individuals. But since we can't have a lady like Koneko-san be naked with a man, that cloth of hers is the best option. Now then, I will leave you two to it. Just do it as we practiced, and you'll be fine, Koneko-san."

"…Yes."

After Chiharu took her leave, Koneko approached Takeshi, looking at him with an expectant look. Takeshi took off his shirt and stared at Koneko.

"So…do I need to do anything else, or…?"

"…No, this is fine." Koneko said. "Excuse me."

White aura surrounded Koneko's body as she leaned down and embraced Takeshi. He let out a sigh of relief as he felt his fatigue slowly vanishing, being replaced with a sensation of warmth and bliss. He felt as if he was taking a warm bath at the ideal temperature.

"I could get addicted to this…" Takeshi admitted. "Even my insides feel like they're getting warmer."

"…This is healing-type Senjutsu." Koneko smiled, her face still flushed. "I will recover Senpai's lost lifespan without fail. After all…I would be very sad if Senpai vanished, and so would a lot of other people. That's why, I'll work day and night to heal you."

Koneko hugged Takeshi even tighter after saying that. Her tail had also wrapped itself around his arm, caressing it. Without thinking about it, Takeshi's hand had started caressing Koneko's head, with the latter letting out a soft purr in response.

"Don't worry, Koneko-chan." Takeshi said. "I won't go anywhere. I intend to spend the rest of my life next to you guys after all."

Koneko said nothing, staring at Takeshi with an almost feverish gaze. From his part, Takeshi could feel the warmth inside him having turned into a raging conflagration as he gazed back at his fellow Devil. It was as if his and Koneko's feelings were resonating and intensifying under the influence of Senjutsu.

Abandoning his inhibitions and driven by instinct and desire, Takeshi leaned forward, capturing Koneko's lips in a chaste kiss. He marveled at how soft they were before letting out a surprised gasp at Koneko deepening the kiss, her hands locked around his neck as she drew him closer. Their kiss continued for a few seconds until they both pulled back, staring at each other with matching flushed expressions.

"Koneko-chan…"

"Takeshi-senpai…"

As if obeying some sort of unspoken signal, the two young Devils started kissing once again. Takeshi began caressing Koneko's thigh, while her hands were trailing his chest and heading lower and lower. His thoughts clouded by lust and arousal, Takeshi was about to push Koneko down until—

"Oi! What the Hell are you two doing there!?"

Chiharu, who had come to check up on them, shouted at the two Devils, her face practically steaming. Takeshi and Koneko stopped kissing, staring at the fuming Chiharu for a couple of seconds. Then, Takeshi turned back to Koneko and pulled her in for a third kiss, seemingly dismissing Chiharu.

"H-Hey, don't ignore me and start another round in front of me!" Chiharu shrieked. "Stop this at once!"

Chiharu rushed at the two of them, separating them and glaring at Takeshi.

"What is wrong with you!?" Chiharu shouted. "Why the Hell wouldn't you stop!?"

"Why would I stop?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "I was enjoying this very much, and so was Koneko-chan. Am I wrong?"

"…You're not." Koneko said with an embarrassed expression, fidgeting on the spot. "Still…it's no good to inconvenience others…"

"Ah, I see. My bad then. I couldn't hold myself back."

"Time and a place, Takeshi-san…" Chiharu said with an exasperated expression. "Come on, Koneko-san. Let's make you presentable before that Dragon-in-heat over there tries to sink his claws in you again."

"Once you're done, could you come back here, Koneko-chan?" Takeshi said, raising his hands once Chiharu shot him a nasty glare. "I'm not going to start another make-out session…or more. The two of us need to talk about this, that's all."

"…It's alright, Chiharu-san." Koneko said. "We won't let ourselves get carried away."

"See that you don't." Chiharu said. "Romance and the like can wait until after the game. You don't have the luxury to be distracted."

Takeshi nodded as Chiharu and Koneko took their leave. After a couple of minutes, Koneko returned back to him, now dressed in Kuoh Academy's uniform once again. She sat across from him, still looking embarrassed. Takeshi was pretty flustered himself now that he had the chance to calm down, but was determined to press on.

"So, about those kisses…" Takeshi said, a slight tremble in his voice. "It should be obvious, but I'll say it nonetheless; I love you very much, Koneko-chan. Not just as friends, but as a girl. The same goes for you, I guess?"

"…Yes." Koneko nodded. "I also love you like that, Takeshi-senpai. Being around you is always fun, and you make me feel safe like no-one else can. That's why…I want us to take our relationship to the next level…"

"Nothing would make me happier…but are you sure?" Takeshi said with a foreboding expression. "I swore to myself that I won't lose to the power of the Evil Dragons, but something like that happening is still a very real possibility. I don't want you to get hurt, either physically or emotionally…"

"…You won't lose." Koneko said. "Senpai is the strongest person I know. Even in the unlikely possibility this ends in a tragedy, I won't regret it. Better to have some happiness and fond memories I can look back to than be tormented for not having confessed to you sooner. The latter…would be truly unbearable for me in the long run."

"Looks like you've made your resolve, so I won't say anything else." Takeshi smiled. "As for me, I have one more reason not to lose now. However, I'm curious about something."

"…What is it?"

"Why now of all times?" Takeshi asked. "Chiharu-san had a point about us keeping our heads in the game. Couldn't you wait until after the battle with Riser?"

"…I could…but I got anxious." Koneko admitted, a nervous expression on her face. "With several girls trying to get closer to you, Senpai will probably end up with several women, so I wanted to be the first to confess to you…be a little more special than the others in your memories. Think of it as my selfishness."

"You make it sound as me having a harem is a done deal." Takeshi said. "You'd be alright with that?"

"…As long as you give me my fair share of love and affection, I don't really have a problem with it." Koneko smiled, and then blushed again. "Besides…you can't expect me to deal with your lust on my own for the next ten thousand years. No matter how durable I am, my body will break in the end…"

"Oi, oi, do you think I'm some kind of sex-crazed brute?" Takeshi frowned. "I would never treat Koneko-chan, or any other girl for that matter, in a rough manner."

"…I know." Koneko said. "Being gentle is one of your best qualities after all. Just know that whether you want me alone or want to acquire a harem…I will stay by your side and support you as much as I can either way."

"Having a girl like you care for me so much, I'm quite the lucky guy, aren't I?" Takeshi grinned as he stood up, with Koneko following suit. "I may be inexperienced, but please take care of me from now on as my girlfriend, Koneko-chan."

"…Take care of me as well, Takeshi-senpai." Koneko smiled. "My boyfriend."

"I like the sound of that."

Takeshi said as he leaned down, giving Koneko a quick kiss.

"Sorry, couldn't hold myself back again." Takeshi chuckled. "I'd take my time, but I think our chaperone in the distance would blow her fuse if I did. Perhaps we can continue this another time."

"…I'll hold you to that." Koneko said. "I have to get back to training now. You do your best as well, Takeshi-senpai."

"Count on it."

Once Koneko was gone, Chiharu emerged from the forest and approached Takeshi.

"Done with your confession, or whatever that was?"

"Yeah, thanks for giving us some time alone, Chiharu-san." Takeshi said. "I appreciate it."

"Just try to do your best and focus here." Chiharu said. "I know you must be all giddy and stuff now that you have a girlfriend, but you can't afford to be distracted here. Our time here is coming to an end soon."

"I know, but it won't be a problem." Takeshi said as he sat on the ground again. "If anything, I'm feeling even more motivated to succeed now. I can't let my girlfriend cry after all."

"Is that so?" Chiharu said. "In that case, I expect to see some marked improvement here. Show me what you've got, Takeshi-san."

"I will!"

Takeshi said as he took a deep breath and closed his eyes, doing his utmost to focus.

A week later…

"I can't sleep…"

Takeshi grumbled, having lost count of the times he had tossed and turned in his bed. In the bed next to him, Yuuto was sleeping without a care in the world. He couldn't help but feel envious. The closer they got to the game, the more anxious he seemed to become. He figured this was inevitable due to the stakes involved.

"I wonder if I could sneak into Koneko-chan's room…"

Takeshi dismissed that idea as fast as it came. Not only would it be rude to interrupt his now-girlfriend's sleep, he was certain Chiharu, her roommate, would not appreciate the intrusion. He had no desire to get his skull bashed in by the female Oni's club.

"Another sleepless night it is then…"

Resigning himself, Takeshi got up and went to the kitchen, preparing a cup of tea. He hoped it would help him relax, though he wasn't expecting much from it. After taking a few sips, he stepped outside, heading for the patio. While Grayfia had expressly forbidden him to engage in any strenuous training during the night, that should not include his meditation exercises. But upon arriving at the patio, he encountered an unexpected individual standing there.

"President?"

Takeshi called out to the crimson-haired girl, who turned to him. She was wearing a red negligee, had her hair tied in a ponytail and was holding a book in her hands. He couldn't help but admit that her current look was even more alluring than usual.

"Ara, Takeshi." Rias said. "Couldn't sleep either?"

"Yeah, I'm feeling a bit jittery." Takeshi said, frowning upon noticing the glasses in Rias's face. "You've got bad eyesight, President?"

"No, this is just to get me in the mood." Rias said as she took off her glasses. "I feel like I can concentrate better while I have them. I wonder if this means I've lived in the human world for too long."

"Is that a bad thing?"

"Not at all." Rias said. "Like I said before, it's been a privilege living here."

"I see you've been reading about Rating Game tactics." Takeshi said, pointing at the book in Rias's hands. "Let me guess, you're also getting more and more nervous as the time for the game approaches?"

"You got me…" Rias sighed. "This game is my big chance, not only to escape from my arranged marriage, but also to prove that I'm a worthy member of the Gremory family."

"I'm not sure I'm following." Takeshi said. "Why would you need to prove yourself worthy?"

"Because…everyone else in my family excels in something." Rias said with a downcast expression. "My father, the head of the family, distinguished himself during the Great War and is well-respected in the Underworld. My mother is renowned as the strongest female that came out of the House of Bael, and her business sense is unmatched. My older brother is regarded as the strongest Devil ever and holds the position of Devil King Lucifer. Grayfia, my sister-in-law, is also famous for her combat prowess throughout the Underworld."

"Wait…sister-in-law?" Takeshi said, a surprised expression on his face. "Grayfia-san is your brother's wife?"

"That's right, I forgot to mention that, didn't I?" Rias said. "Yes, Grayfia is also part of the family. You couldn't have guessed it from her everyday behavior, but that's how it is. She fully immerses herself in her role as a maid, and only acts as a member of the household when she's on leave. These times…she's truly a force to be reckoned with…"

Rias shivered, as if recalling some painful memory.

"The things you learn…" Takeshi muttered. "I think I see what the problem is. With so many excellent family members around you, you can't help but compare yourself to them and feel like you're coming up short. Don't you think you're being a little too hard on yourself though? You're still very young, even by human standards. I'm sure you'll grow to be an excellent individual on par with them."

"That's what I keep telling myself, but it doesn't make me feel any better." Rias said. "Would it make you feel any better if you were in my shoes?"

"Probably not." Takeshi admitted. "But beating Riser in the game…that's not enough to raise your standing, is it?"

"No, but it's a good start, and the first step towards my dream." Rias said. "I…aim to become the Rating Game Champion in the future. If I can accomplish this, something that no other member of my family has done, I feel like I can truly step out of their shadow and stand with pride among them."

"That's quite the difficult goal." Takeshi said. "The current Champion, Diehauser Belial, has been undefeated for about three centuries, hasn't he? They say only our Devil Kings are capable of defeating him. Taking him down will be a challenge."

"It will, but that's what makes it worth it." Rias said, letting out a sly smirk. "I hope you're not getting cold feet, Takeshi?"

"As if." Takeshi snorted. "If anything, I'm feeling even more pumped up now. If that's your goal, I swear I'll do my utmost to make you the King of the Rating Game, President."

"Thank you, Takeshi." Rias smiled. "With your help and everyone else's, I feel confident I can do it. You are someone who can become the ultimate Pawn after all."

"Ultimate Pawn, eh?" Takeshi rubbed his chin. "That doesn't sound too bad. You understand though that after I become independent, I might go after the title of Champion myself, right?"

"If that happens, then at that time, let's both fight with everything we've got, and may the best King win." Rias said, holding out her pinky. "Promise?"

"Promise." Takeshi smiled, entwining his pinky around hers. "No regrets, no matter what the result might be. Just know that I will truly show no mercy at that time."

"I know." Rias said as they let go of each other's fingers. "It's one of your best and worst qualities at the same time."

"I guess it is." Takeshi chuckled, but then his expression became serious. "President, about the matter with Riser…I've been curious about something."

"What is it?"

"Why are you so against marrying him?" Takeshi said. "I mean, sure, he seems arrogant, overbearing and a womanizer…but he has a point about the situation of your household. Taking your position into account as well, can you really afford to turn him down?"

Rias was silent for a few seconds before answering.

"Takeshi, do you remember that talk we had back at the Ferris wheel?" Rias said. "When I told you about how I feel about carrying the Gremory name, how people don't look at you as a person, but as an extension of the family?"

"Yes, I do." Takeshi said. "What about it?"

"I…always had this dream ever since I was little, you see." Rias said with a sad smile. "That I would meet someone who would see me as Rias the individual and love me for that, not for my family name or the advantages it brings to him."

Rias turned her gaze up, looking at the starry sky.

"I know I shouldn't complain about my lot in life, that I shouldn't be selfish." Rias said. "There are so many people that have it so much worse than I do, that they don't enjoy the privileges as I do. Having my marriage partner decided for me seems like a small price to pay for my good fortune. Even so…I can't help but wish for it. My responsibilities to my family complicate my feelings, but I still want to cherish this small dream of mine."

"I take it that Riser doesn't meet your conditions then?" Takeshi asked. "Is it because of his behavior? Or the fact that he has a harem?"

"Riser can be arrogant, but he's much better than some other Devils I know." Rias said. "About the harem, while I would prefer a monogamous relationship, I would have no issue with it as long as my partner cherished me. No, the problem is that Riser doesn't see me as an individual, only as a means for more clout and prestige in the Underworld."

"But it's not like he's going to be the next head of the House of Gremory, right?" Takeshi said. "I mean, you're still going to be the head if I understand the Underworld's customs correctly. Also, how can you tell he doesn't care for you as Rias?"

"I might be the head, but Riser will still be connected to the Gremory and Bael families, both venerated Pillars in their own right, through this marriage, as well as have a personal connection to my brother, the current Lucifer." Rias explained. "Combined with his status as a member of the Phenex family, his personal influence and weight of opinion will soar."

"I see." Takeshi said. "No wonder he's so keen on having this marriage go through."

"As for him not caring about me as a person…I could tell that from the way he spoke to me all these times we met prior to this confrontation." Rias said. "Oh, he was charming alright, to the point where I almost fell for his act the first couple of times we met. But I saw through him and understood his true intentions in our subsequent meetings. Like I said before, I am confident in my ability to judge one's character. I can tell that Riser doesn't care for me. At best, he lusts after me."

"I'll take your word for it." Takeshi said. "But weren't there any other ways to break this engagement? Did it have to be a Rating Game?"

"Well…" Rias hesitated a bit there, her cheeks reddening. "At one time, I considered…losing my virginity. If I was soiled…then perhaps my parents would be forced to call off the engagement…"

"Oh…" Takeshi said, feeling embarrassed as well. "Well…I'm glad you didn't go thorough with it. Your first time should be with someone you love, not some random dude in the streets."

"It wasn't going to be someone random…" Rias muttered, her blush becoming more prominent. "I…thought of approaching you…"

"…Wait, what?" Takeshi said, feeling confused. "Me? You were going to try and seduce me to sleep with you? I thought you'd go to Yuuto first or something…"

"Yuuto is like a younger brother to me, so I could never ask him." Rias said. "Even if I had, he would have denied it due to his honor as a Knight. You, I might be able to convince easier. Not to mention…I wouldn't mind it if it was you…"

"Oh…is that so…?" Takeshi said, coughing in his fist in an attempt to compose himself. "However, you didn't go through with it in the end. What changed your mind?"

"The fact that such a desperate measure was unlikely to work…" Rias sighed. "Plus, I couldn't bear to put you in a position where you might suffer the Phenex family's wrath. Many nobles are already looking for an excuse to dispose of you, and I would rather spend eternity in Cocytus than be the reason for it."

"Kind and thoughtful as always…" Takeshi smiled, but then his expression fell. "Meanwhile, my recklessness brought this upon you. If I hadn't acted in such a rash manner, perhaps we could have avoided this."

"Or perhaps we'd all be dead." Rias said. "Either way, we can't change the past, only do all we can now for the sake of the future."

"It's as you say." Takeshi nodded. "Do you believe we can defeat Riser and his Peerage, President?"

"If you asked me before this training camp, I would say that the odds weren't in our favor." Rias said. "But now…now I'm feeling more confident. Still…I can't help but worry. That probably makes me a failure as a King…but I don't want you all to suffer for a petty reason like my selfishness."

"Hey, what's wrong with being selfish?" Takeshi said. "We are Devils, aren't we? Living according to our desires is what we do. If your family is trying to impose their selfishness upon you, then why shouldn't you fight back against that, President?"

Takeshi clasped her hands, startling Rias, before continuing.

"Moreover, I can tell you this with confidence." Takeshi said. "I will always fight for your sake no matter who your opponent is. Not because you're my master, and not because you're the Princess of Gremory either. But because you're Rias, the gentle and kindhearted Devil girl that accepted me and put her faith in me despite the prejudice of the world against me. Her, I will defend until my last breath as her Pawn, because she's one of the best girls I know."

Takeshi did his best to make sure his tone conveyed nothing but sincerity. These were his true feelings without a shred of falsehood. Much to his surprise, Takeshi noticed that Rias's face had turned as red as her hair for some reason.

"Is this how it feels…?" Rias murmured, and then placed her hand on Takeshi's cheek. "Takeshi…don't make it sound like you're going to die for my sake. Live. Stay with me, for as long as we both live."

"It's a promise." Takeshi smiled. "I will always come back to you, no matter what."

Rias showed a radiant smile in return, making Takeshi's heart beat faster. Before he realized what was happening, his hand was at Rias's waist, and the crimson-haired girl seemed to be leaning closer to him, her warm breath hitting his face. But before they could go further—

"Rias-sama, Takeshi-sama, there you are. I was wondering where you two had gone."

Grayfia's voice caused both youths to flinch and step away from one another in a hurry.

"Right…so, I'll be going back to my room now." Takeshi said in a hurry, feeling flustered. "Nice chatting with you, Rias…I mean, President!"

"Yes…this was a good talk…"

Rias said, still in a daze. Once Takeshi had taken his leave, Grayfia let out a sigh as she approached Rias.

"That wasn't a simple talk between a master and her servant, was it?" Grayfia said. "You were in quite the compromising position just now. Rias-sama…do you perhaps have feelings for Takeshi-sama?"

"Even if I have…is that really your business, Grayfia?" Rias said with a serious expression. "My family might think my body is theirs to sell, but my heart is mine to give to whomever I wish."

"The Gremory family has nothing to do with this." Grayfia said, her expression softening. "I'm worried about you because of Takeshi-sama's unique circumstances. I wouldn't want you to experience heartbreak…or worse."

"I've made my decision long ago." Rias said with a resolute expression. "No matter what anyone else says, I will stand by Takeshi's side and support him until the end. Whether it's as his master and friend…or something more."

"Good grief, you're so much like your brother…" Grayfia let out an exasperated sigh. "Both of you fall deeply in love and follow your heart wherever it takes you, consequences by damned. This has been your family's worst trait…and also your best. Just…promise me you'll be as careful as possible, Rias."

"I'll do my best, sister." Rias smiled. "Now, let's go inside. The night wind is getting kind of chilly."

Grayfia nodded, following Rias back to the mansion.

Three days later…

"I think I've got it at last…"

Takeshi said, a wide grin on his face. He was currently in the small lake near the mansion, practicing with Berserk Devastator under the watchful eyes of Grayfia and Chiharu. Despite having equipped it for more than an hour and having sparred with both women over the course of it, he had yet to lose control. He could still feel Grendel's influence seeping in, but his attempts to establish dominance had been foiled by Takeshi's clarity of mind, a result of his daily meditations. Like Chiharu had said, he truly felt as if he was a stone in the middle of a river, unmoving as the currents of hatred washed over him.

"Great work, Takeshi-san." Chiharu said with a smile. "It seems your efforts over the past few days have paid off. You appear to have a much better control over your Sacred Gear now. If you were studying Senjutsu, you'd be ready for the next step in learning how to control your ki."

"Shame I can't do that." Takeshi said as he shot several fireballs at the waterfall. "Apart from me not being a Youkai, taking in the malice and savagery of the surroundings while I host several evil entities within me…that would not be a good combination."

"True." Grayfia said. "Still, learning to control yourself in that manner is enough. Grendel's constant interference would be a fatal flaw, both in the game and in battle."

"However, I'm still not satisfied." Takeshi frowned. "Why haven't I unlocked the Balance Breaker yet? If rejecting the Evil Dragons' temptations is the way, shouldn't I have gained access to it by now? What gives, Grendel? Not willing to admit that you've lost to me?"

[Lose?] Grendel growled. [Me, lose to a whelp like you? Don't get carried away, brat! I was just biding my time and gathering strength for this!]

Suddenly, Takeshi felt as if his consciousness was being pulled inwards. Without warning, he found himself in the large hall serving as Grendel's mindscape. Said Evil Dragon was sitting on the throne in the other end of the room, a savage grin on his draconic features.

"Let me guess." Takeshi said. "You brought me here because you want to admit defeat in person and hand me the Balance Breaker?"

[There's a limit to bad jokes, brat.] Grendel said as he stood up. [No, I'm just taking the even more direct approach. If my influence isn't enough to get you to rampage, I'll simply break your mind by pulverizing you here!]

With speed unbefitting of its massive frame, Grendel lunged at Takeshi, with his fist sending him flying an crashing on the wall. Takeshi crumbled on the ground, spitting out blood. He tried to summon his Sacred Gear, but there was no response.

"Of course it wouldn't be so simple!"

Takeshi cried out as he scurried out of the way, evading Grendel's charge. However, the Dragon's tail struck him, sending him flying once again. Spreading his wings, he took flight and shot a large number of fireballs at Grendel.

[Mediocre!] Grendel laughed as the fireballs failed to even mar his scales. [Let me show you how it's done!]

Grendel's stomach expanded as he opened his maw wide and shot three massive fireballs at Takeshi. He avoided the first two, but the third struck him head-on, sending him crashing on the ground with his body singed all over. Not giving him a chance to rest, Grendel grabbed him from his feet and started throwing him around like a ragdoll, laughing like a maniac the whole time. Takeshi almost blacked out a couple of times, but retained consciousness through sheer force of will. Growing bored, Grendel tossed Takeshi up in the air and kicked him with all his strength, sending him crashing on the stone wall behind him.

[Pathetic.] Grendel snorted as Takeshi fell on the ground, his body beaten all over and his breath coming out in short gasps. [Truly pathetic! You thought you could dominate me with such feeble strength!? Did you get a big head because that pitiful moron Nidhogg submitted to you!? Don't make me laugh, whelp! You don't understand our true terror! Someone like you could never match up to us!]

Instead of answering, Takeshi stood up abruptly and shot a powerful blast of demonic power at Grendel's face. The Dragon was unfazed as his tail struck Takeshi once again, sending him flying and crashing in a large dining table.

[It's useless.] Grendel said. [You can't defeat me. Your mind will shatter, and I will take control. Then, I will enjoy myself to the fullest by playing with your friends outside. Ah, I hope they can give me a lot of satisfaction! It's been ages since I've felt a decent amount of pain! But since one of them is really strong, there's no way I won't enjoy a good, old-fashioned battle to the death!]

"Damn crazy Dragon…" Takeshi wheezed out, glaring at Grendel. "But you're…a bit premature. I'm still here…and there's no way I'm letting you win, Grendel!"

[Brave words, but what can you do!?] Grendel laughed. [Your mind can't take much more of this. You'll break before long, and I'll be free to wreak as much havoc as I want!]

The mind…?

Takeshi wondered, and then his eyes opened wide.

That's right… This isn't the real world, but a mindscape. Physical strength, endurance, demonic power, Sacred Gears, none of that matters here. In that case…!

Takeshi stood up and closed his eyes, spreading his arms wide.

[What's this?] Grendel frowned. [Are you giving up? That's boring, whelp! Struggle a bit more, cry out a bit more! How am I supposed to be satisfied with a conclusion like this!?]

Takeshi said nothing, prompting Grendel to snort.

[Suit yourself then.] Grendel said. [Let's hope your friends outside will be more of a challenge!]

Grendel rushed forward, delivering a powerful straight at Takeshi. Much to his shock however, Takeshi remained rooted on the spot, his blow looking like it had inflicted zero damage on him. Grendel snarled as he struck him with his tail, followed by a series of kicks and several fireballs that engulfed Takeshi's body. Despite his efforts though, Takeshi remained unmoving and unharmed.

[Impossible…] Grendel muttered. [This is impossible! Why isn't it affecting you!? Why aren't you hurt!? What did you do, whelp!?]

"You can't harm me anymore, Grendel." Takeshi smirked as he opened his eyes. "I've figured it out, and it was quite simple in retrospect. The me standing here is just a projection of my mind inside the Sacred Gear. In that case, as long as I will myself to be untouchable to your attacks, you cannot affect me. It's the same principle as finding my center during all these mediation exercises."

[Ridiculous!] Grendel howled. [You think you're stronger than me!? That you can reject my will!? If so, you're in for a rude awakening, whelp!]

Grendel redoubled his efforts to take down Takeshi, the entire hall around the two turning into a scorched, broken mess as a result of his furious assault. However, it was all for nothing as Takeshi was once again unaffected by his blows.

"It's over, Grendel!" Takeshi declared in the midst of this onslaught. "This match—is my win!"

In response to his declaration, several chains erupted from the ground, binding Grendel's limbs and forcing him on his knees.

[This is…shit!] Grendel screamed in outrage as the chains tightened around him. [Are you joking me!? This damn Sacred Gear acknowledges the brat over me!? Don't screw with me! I haven't lost yet! I can still fight!]

Ignoring the writhing Grendel, Takeshi walked past him and sat on the oversized throne, grinning as he looked at the bound Dragon.

"Ah, it's good to be the king." Takeshi said. "Looks like your one hundred percent streak is broken, Grendel. From now on, your power is mine to control."

[Damn you…] Grendel growled, hatred evident in his eyes. [Don't think this is over, whelp! I will drag you down from there and show you a Hell beyond your worst nightmares! Count on it!]

"Yeah, yeah, sure you will." Takeshi said, making a dismissive gesture. "But for now, I'm eager to try out that new Balance Breaker. Let's see what you've got for me."

Takeshi closed his eyes as he felt his consciousness being pulled upwards. Meanwhile, the bound Grendel let out a low chuckle.

[Oh, I wouldn't be so excited if I was in your shoes, whelp.]

"What's wrong with him?" Chiharu said, kneeling next to Takeshi with a frown. "It's been almost ten minutes. Should we be worried?"

"Something is happening with the Sacred Gear, that's for sure." Grayfia, who stood next to her, said. "For better or for worse, I believe this is the critical moment. We should—"

Grayfia stopped talking as she felt a large amount of power building up in Takeshi's body. Acting on instinct, she grabbed Chiharu and leaped backwards. The next moment, massive amounts of scorching aura erupted from Takeshi's body, burning everything around him and vaporizing the water in the lake. A pillar of fire erupted from Takeshi's body next, obscuring him.

"Is that…the Balance Breaker!?" Chiharu cried out. "Has he unlocked it, or is he going on a rampage!?"

"We'll find out soon, I guess."

Grayfia said. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the other members of the Gremory Peerage flying towards them, having sensed the outburst of power and what it signified. Then, a voice echoed from inside the pillar.

[Atrocity Rise! Crime Force Awakening!]

The pillar of fire swelled briefly before dispersing, revealing an armored form standing amidst the scorched earth. Said armor was thick and colored dark green with green gems attached to the chest, forearm, foreleg and shoulder portions. Three horn-like protrusions could be seen growing from the shoulder armor, an armored tail extended from the back, a single horn protruded from the helmet and silver energy lines were running through the gauntlets, greaves and chest, forming a star-like pattern in the latter's case. A pair of wings also extended from the back of the armor.

"Takeshi!?" Rias shouted, taking a few tentative steps forward. "Is that you in there!?"

"…Senpai!?" Koneko said, joining Rias. "Please, answer us!"

"Be careful, everyone!" Grayfia said, surrounding herself with demonic power. "There's a good chance that's Takeshi-sama has lost control!"

After a few seconds had passed, the armor's helmet retracted, revealing Takeshi's smiling face.

"Hey there, everyone." Takeshi said. "Why the serious and grim faces?"

Following his words, the raging aura around Takeshi died down, with everyone relaxing as a result.

"Thank the Devil Kings…" Akeno let out a relieved sigh. "It's him."

"You sure had us worried there." Pandora let out a smile. "You did it, Takeshi."

"As expected from my friend." Yuuto smiled. "You managed to tame Grendel despite the odds being against you."

Meanwhile, Takeshi was still grinning as he bumped his fist into his open palm and spoke.

"Phase Two…complete."

This concludes Chapter 18. First, in response to your questions.

To Rai of bladeedge: Takeshi's childhood friends will feature in the next arc. That's all I can say for now.

To Ryukipendragon: Something to that effect will happen since the final Balance Breaker will be able to use all abilities from the previous Balance Breakers on top of its features.

The Gremory group's training continues here as everyone struggles to improve. In terms of relationships, Takeshi has gotten even closer with Rias and Akeno, and has entered into an official relationship with Koneko. Grendel's Balance Breaker has also debuted here, with its form being inspired from the concept art of Deathwing's human form in WoW Cataclysm. I've also made a page for Cataclysm Zone in DxD Fanon wiki, so feel free to check it out.

Now then…onto less pleasant matters. A couple of days ago, I was diagnosed with testicular cancer, news that had quite the adverse effect on my mood. Thankfully, this type of cancer is highly treatable, but it's still a stressful ordeal for me. As such, future releases might be a little slower until I've finished my treatments, but that will depend on my overall mood.

Well, that's all for now. The next chapter will be the start of the Rating Game. Until then, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
