Chapter 29 – Progress

"So, if I understand this right, Gasper-kun is a half-human, half-Vampire hybrid? And that's why he has a Sacred Gear?"

"That's right. Because of his unique Sacred Gear and heritage, he's quite powerful in his own right. The biggest issue is his lack of control and timidness."

Rias responded thus to Takeshi's question. Currently, the Occult Research Club was assembled in their clubroom, with a cardboard box making sniffing noises placed next to one of the sofas.

"A blond Vampire with the power to stop time…" Pandora remarked. "You don't happen to also have a collection of stone statues of half-naked Aztec bodybuilders in the basement, President?"

"…No." Koneko said from her position on Takeshi's lap. "Before you ask, we don't have a collection of severed women's hands in the attic either, Senpai."

"Let's not get distracted, everyone." Takeshi said, turning to Rias. "If Gasper-kun has the abilties of a Vampire and the power to stop time, I'm surprised how you managed to reincarnate him by using only a single Bishop piece, President."

"I managed it because the piece I used wasn't a normal one." Rias said. "It was a Mutation Piece."

"Mutation…?" Takeshi frowned. "You mean those rare pieces that allow one to reincarnate servants with potential power beyond the master's capability?"

"That's right." Rias said. "Due to a certain bug within said pieces, the safety protocols don't function as they should and the piece's amount of stored demonic power is greater than normal. That's what enables irregular reincarnations using only that singular piece. Beelzebub-sama is aware of this issue, but left it as is, treating it as an amusing feature. Or perhaps it was calculated for some reason… Bottom line is, I was lucky enough to possess a Mutated Bishop among my set and used it on Gasper."

"However, as you've seen just now, the problem is Gasper-kun's ability." Akeno said. "Not only is he unable to control it, but its power fluctuates wildly as well. It's possible he could freeze the time of the entire school if Forbidden Balor View activates during one of its high-power spikes."

"Not only that, but its power has the potential to increase even more in the future." Rias said. "It's to the point where he could even attain Balance Breaker down the line."

"Balance Breaker while he has so little control over his power as is?" Xenovia frowned. "This is definitely a recipe for disaster."

"Despite that, the higher-ups seem to think I can control it somehow as I am now." Rias said with a derisive smile. "I wonder if they hope…no, that's not something Gasper should hear…"

"Couldn't you use your ability on him, President?" Yuuto suggested. "Lock the power of Forbidden Balor View with it?"

"There's no point in doing that." Rias said. "Even if I could lock his Sacred Gear, it would manifest again once my ability wears off. I can't offer a permanent solution like that."

"E-Everyone's talking about me like I'm not here… I don't like that…"

A faint voice came from the cardboard box next to Takeshi. He nudged it with his foot as he spoke.

"If you don't like it, you're free to participate in our conversation, Gasper-kun." Takeshi said. "It's about you after all."

"Eeekkkk! N-No way!"

"Gasper is quite the prodigy all things considered." Rias said. "Even though he's a hybrid, he comes from a distinguished family of noble Vampires and is very familiar with their abilties. He's also well-versed in magic and there's his time-stopping Sacred Gear to consider. If he overcomes his issues, I'm sure he will become very powerful."

"What about the weaknesses inherent to Vampires though?" Pandora asked. "The physical abilities of an average Vampire are greater than those of an average Devil, but they have plenty of weaknesses in return. Most important is their great vulnerability to sunlight. Will Gasper-kun be alright?"

"Gasper belongs to the category of Daywalker Vampires due to a mutation present in his blood." Rias said. "Moreover, because of his status as a hybrid, he doesn't share the same weaknesses as other Vampires, though his strength is somewhat diminished in return. However, he still feels uncomfortable under the sun."

"I hate the sunlighhhht!" Gasper wailed. "It'd be better if the sun just vanished from the skyyyyy!"

"I won't argue there, but you need to get out more regardless." Takeshi said. "How else will you attend class and socialize with others?"

"A-Attend class!? Socialize!?" Gasper shouted. "W-What are you saying, Senpaiiiii!? I hate the air and light of the outside world! I can't stand crowds of people! Just let me remain a boy living inside a cardboard boooooox!"

"I think he got a little too attached to his box." Pandora said. "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea…"

"What about his diet?" Takeshi asked. "Vampires need to drink blood, right? Or is it different for him since he's a Dhampir?"

"It is." Rias said. "As a half-Vampire, he doesn't need to drink blood that often and can ingest normal food. If he drinks once every ten days, he will be fine…though he seems to have an aversion to blood as well."

"I hate blooooood!" Gasper shouted. "I hate fish, and liver as wellllllll!"

"Boy, you sure have quite a few dislikes." Takeshi remarked with an annoyed expression. "What are we supposed to do with a Vampire who doesn't want to fight, doesn't want to get out of his box and won't even drink blood?"

"…Nothing to be done." Koneko said. "Gya-kun is a good-for-nothing Vampire after all."

"N-No wayyyy!" Gasper cried out. "Koneko-chan is a meanieeee!"

"We should get started on Gasper's training right away…is what I want to say, but Akeno and I have been summoned by my brother." Rias said with a dissatisfied expression. "Something about receiving instructions for the upcoming summit. Yuuto, my brother has asked for you as well. He said he wants to hear about your Balance Breaker in greater detail."

"Devil King-sama is interested in my Holy Demonic Sword?" Yuuto asked. "I guess it's only natural due to its uniqueness. Sorry, Takeshi-kun, but it looks like I'll have to leave Gasper-kun to you and the others."

"Leave it to me." Takeshi said, giving him a thumbs-up. "I'll do what I can for my new Kouhai. The others are here too, so I'm sure we'll come up with something."

"I'm sorry I'm dumping this on you, everyone." Rias said with an apologetic expression. "I promise I'll do my best to be back as soon as possible."

"We can handle it on our own." Xenovia said as she bumped her fists, opening the cardboard box with the trembling Gasper inside. "First, we'll start by thoroughly discipling you, Gasper. A weak man is no good after all. It's been some time since I last fought against a Vampire, so I'm feeling a little excited."

"F-Fight!?" Gasper yelled. "N-No wayyyyy! I don't want to fight the user of Durandal! I-I'll be destroyed in an instant!"

"Don't scream like that, Gasper." Xenovia said. "Perhaps I should try an exorcism as well. I have some vials of holy water and a cross stashed away. But maybe I should attack with garlic too for maximum effectiveness?"

"Hiiiii!" Gasper shrieked. "E-Exorcism!? Garlic!? Noooooo!"

"You might want to come back sooner rather than later, Rias." Takeshi said with a deadpan expression as he observed the strangely driven Xenovia and the frightened Gasper. "Otherwise, there might not be a servant left for us to help if we let Xenovia have her way."

"Well…I'm counting on you to not let her go too far, Takeshi." Rias said as she whispered into his ear. "I promise I'll make it up to you later."

"Now I'm feeling even more motivated." Takeshi grinned. "I'll do my best to not let Xenovia exorcise Gasper…or have Xenovia exorcise herself by accident…"

Once Rias, Akeno and Yuuto had taken their leave, Takeshi, Koneko, Pandora and Xenovia carried Gasper outside despite the latter's protests. Dumping him on the ground, Xenovia drew out Durandal and swung it at the box. Having sensed the incoming danger, Gasper jumped out of the box and started running with tears running down his eyes.

"That's the spirit." Xenovia said with an intense expression as she began chasing after him. "A strong mind begins from a strong body. That's why, run till you drop, and then some! Unless you want to feel Durandal's sting on your body, Gasper!"

"Eeeek!" Gasper cried out. "This girl is crazyyyyy! I-I'll get exorcised heeeeere!"

Meanwhile, next to Xenovia, Koneko was also chasing after Gasper while holding garlic in her hands.

"…Gya-kun, you have to eat lots of garlic as well if you want to be healthy."

"Noooooo! K-Koneko-chan is bullying meeeee!"

Takeshi and Pandora observed the scene unfolding before them with half-lidded eyes.

"Should…should we help him?" Pandora suggested with an uncertain look. "I'm not sure frightening him to death is the best course of action here."

"Perhaps not, but who knows?" Takeshi said. "This method might produce some unexpected results, so let them play around for now. I'll intervene once Gasper reaches his limit, or if it seems like the girls are going too far. Koneko-chan is fine, but Xenovia's eagerness worries me a bit…"

"Yo, Ryuugamine, Othrys-san! How's it going?"

Genshirou, who was approaching from the side, said as he greeted his fellow Devils.

"Hello, Saji-san." Pandora nodded at him. "Are you doing well?"

"Pretty good all things considered." Genshirou said with a proud expression. "I was praised by Student President for my exploits during the Kokabiel mess and received a good evaluation from the higher-ups. Thanks for putting in a good word for me, Othrys-san."

"Don't mention it." Pandora said. "I only spoke the truth. You fought well against that six-winged Fallen Angel."

"So, what are you doing here, Saji-kun?" Takeshi said, taking note of his jersey, army cotton gloves and small shovel. "Maintenance on the flower bad or something?"

"Pretty much." Genshirou said. "With the upcoming summit between the Three Factions, it falls to the Student Council to make the school as presentable as possible. We don't want to make a bad impression to all the big-shots coming here."

"You were stuck with the odd jobs, eh?" Takeshi patted Genshirou's back. "Sorry to hear that."

"Eh, it's alright." Genshirou shrugged. "Someone has to do this after all. More importantly, I heard that Rias-senpai's sealed servant, some sort of shut-in Vampire, was released today. Are they here?"

"Over there." Takeshi pointed at the fleeing Gasper. "It's the kid being chased by Xenovia and Koneko-chan."

"Xenovia-san seems very enthusiastic about this…" Genshirou said with narrowed eyes. "Hey, is this alright, Ryuugamine? Also, is that a girl she's chasing? You lucky bastard, you got a cute, blond-haired girl in your club now? Man, with all these beauties gathering around you, I can't help but feel jealous."

"Considering you're the only guy in Student President's Peerage, you really have no reason to envy me on that regard." Takeshi said. "Also, despite appearance, Gasper-kun over there is a guy. He just likes to cross-dress."

Genshirou gaped at that, staring at Gasper with an incredulous look on his face.

"…No way." Genshirou said with a flat tone after a few seconds. "There's no way that's true, Ryuugamine. I mean, no matter how I see it, that's a girl over there. A girl, I tell you. What kind of swindling is this!? Also, why would a shut-in wear girls' clothes!? You'd wear them because you'd want to show off to someone, no!? What's the point otherwise!?"

"Don't ask me." Takeshi shrugged, turning his gaze to the chase still going on. "Gasper-kun looks like he's halfway to Heaven. I should probably step in right about now."

After saying so, Takeshi stood up, Cataclysm Zone and Mayhem Striker materializing with a flash of light. With a jump, he landed between Xenovia and the panting Gasper, blocking Durandal with his axe. He winced as he struggled to withstand the pressure due to the strength Xenovia was putting behind her blow.

The boost to her strength from her Rook piece is no joke…

"Takeshi?" Xenovia frowned. "Why are you interfering?"

"Because Gasper-kun looks ready to pass out." Takeshi said. "I think the spartan training menu is enough for today. That also means no more teasing him with garlic, Koneko-chan."

"…You're no fun."

Koneko pouted, but she put down the garlic. Behind Takeshi, Gasper leaned on the wall, crying out 'I-I'm saveeeed!' with tears running down his eyes.

"Oh, looks like you servant Devils are having a lot of fun there."

The one who had spoken was a black yukata-clad Azazel, who appeared all of a sudden without anyone noticing him. Almost everyone jumped back in alarm, with Xenovia brandishing Durandal, Genshirou bringing out Absorption Line, Pandora summoning her Spirits, Koneko enveloping herself in Touki and Gasper rushing to hide behind a nearby tree. Takeshi was the only one who wasn't alarmed in the slightest, dismissing his Sacred Gear and turning to the older man.

"Hey, Azazel." Takeshi raised his hand in greeting. "Still trespassing into other people's territories without regard for the rules, I see."

"You're a little too young to be a stickler for the rules, kid." Azazel grinned. "What, it's not like I'm planning anything bad here, you know? I was just bored, and while I was taking a stroll around town, I decided to check out the interesting Sacred Gears Sirzechs's little sister has assembled."

"H-Hey, did you just say Azazel, Ryuugamine?" Genshirou said while glaring at the man. "The Governor of Fallen Angels, that Azazel?"

"In the flesh." Takeshi said, gesturing at everyone to put down their weapons. "Relax, guys. This nosy fellow isn't here to fight. If he wanted to do so, we'd all be in deep trouble."

"What the Evil Dragon User said." Azazel said. "You all seem rather skilled, but you're not anywhere near my level yet. So, is the wielder of the Holy Demonic Sword here? I'd like to observe his unique Sacred Gear if possible."

"If you're looking for Yuuto, he's not here." Takeshi said. "Even if he was, you can't seriously expect us to let you analyze his Sacred Gear, or anyone else's for that matter, when you're still technically our enemy. Unless you're planning on inviting us to Grigori, which is another whole can of worms you don't want to open."

"…Sheesh, talk about a stubborn fellow." Azazel sighed while rubbing his neck. "It's a shame that the Holy Demonic Sword boy isn't here, but what to do. In that case, how about I give you a helping hand with your current problem? This should be an excellent way to display my sincerity."

Before Takeshi could question him, Azazel turned his gaze towards the tree Gasper was hiding behind.

"The Vampire over there." Azazel called out to Gasper, who let out a startled gasp in response. "You're the possessor of Forbidden Balor View, right? Let me take a look at you."

Azazel appeared in front of Gasper with a burst of speed that made it seem like he teleported. The young Vampire fell on his butt from the shock, staring at Azazel with a fearful gaze. Takeshi grimaced at his inability to follow the Fallen Angel's movements, a sentiment shared by Xenovia and Koneko judging from their stern expressions. Genshirou and Pandora were more apprehensive, glaring at Azazel with wary expressions. Meanwhile, the Fallen Angel was busy peering into Gasper's eyes, a small magic circle in front of him as he analyzed him.

"How curious…" Azazel muttered. "Unlike other recorded cases, the embedded limiters don't seem to be working as intended, resulting in a higher and unstable output that also damages the user. Is this a result of an incomplete subspecies manifestation, or has some foreign element been assimilated into the Sacred Gear…? The invocation through sight seems to be operating just fine, but as things stand, it's a double-edged sword that will deal damage to friend and foe alike if its power is left unchecked."

After muttering on his own for a while, Azazel turned to Genshirou and focused on his Sacred Gear. Genshirou tensed under the Fallen Angel's inquisitive gaze, but said nothing.

"The Devil over there, that Sacred Gear of yours is one of Vritra's, Absorption Line, right?" Azazel said. "That's perfect. You can connect your line to this Vampire and drain the power of his Sacred Gear. Once it reaches manageable levels, he can start practicing with it in a safer way."

"Absorb power…directly from a Sacred Gear?" Genshirou looked at his Sacred Gear with a confused expression. "It can do something like that as well? I thought I could only drain the opponent's power…"

"Seriously, both the recent Sacred Gear wielders' knowledge and the Underworld's research regarding Sacred Gears are seriously lacking…" Azazel let out an exhausted sigh. "Absorption Line can connect to any object and scatter its power. Moreover, the line can be detached from the owner's side and be attached to another person or object in the vicinity while retaining its capabilities."

"Seriously…?" Genshirou said with an amazed expression. "Then, I can connect the line to one of my comrades after having captured an opponent…and the enemy's power will flow into them?"

"That's right." Azazel said. "If your power grows, both the number of lines you can produce and the rate of absorption will increase. To be expected from the most versatile Dragon King. Even in this state, his power is no joke."

"This is a significant breakthrough…" Takeshi muttered. "With this, we might be able to make some progress with Gasper-kun's training."

"Other than draining the Sacred Gear's power, you could also try to strengthen the user himself in order to be able to better contain the excess power." Azazel suggested. "Since he's a Vampire, drinking the blood of the Evil Dragons' host should do wonders for him…probably."

"Probably?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean probably? Are there going to be side effects or something?"

"I'm not certain about that." Azazel said. "If it was the blood of the Heavenly Dragons' hosts for instance, it would be a safe powerup. Your blood however…it's been tainted by corrupted draconic aura. There's no telling what sort of effect it might have on the Vampire. It could give him an even greater power boost…or it could poison him. The fact that the foul aura you're giving off is more potent compared to the last time we met leads me to believe you've unlocked yet another Balance Breaker. Am I wrong?"

"You're not." Takeshi said. "Unless push comes to shove then, we'll rely on Saji-kun to drain the power of Gasper-kun's Sacred Gear down to manageable levels."

"That is the safest way for now." Azazel nodded. "But man, three Balance Breakers unlocked is an unheard-of feat. I'm sure Vali will be ecstatic once he finds out about that. Oh, and since we're on the subject, I hope he didn't cause any problems for you when he came to inspect this school last time."

"No, not really." Takeshi said. "It was nice seeing him in a less tense environment…though I totally won that basketball game."

"…Not again." Koneko sighed. "Just let it go already, Senpai. Otherwise, you two will really come to blows next time you meet."

"With this, my good deed for the day is done." Azazel said. "As for you, Ryuugamine Takeshi, feel free to drop by Grigori's labs any time you wish. I'd love to study Cataclysm Zone now that it has progressed to this stage."

"Yeah, I don't see that happening any time soon."

"Suit yourself."

Azazel said as he took his leave, disappearing into the forest as silently as he came. Once he was gone, everybody relaxed and let out relived sighs.

"So, that was the infamous Azazel." Xenovia remarked, wiping the sweat from her brow. "Even though he wasn't directing any killing intent at us, the pressure coming from his body was overwhelming."

"As expected from the Fallen Angel Governor." Pandora said. "If he had been the one to attack Kuoh, the result might have been very different…"

"More importantly, we now have a method that can help us with Gasper-kun." Takeshi said. "What do you say, Saji-kun? Do you think you can help us out here, at least for an hour or so? I'd really appreciate it."

"I don't know…" Genshirou frowned. "I still have to tend to the flower bed…but I guess I can spare some time for the newcomer's training. Not to mention, I want to test out the new possibilities of my Sacred Gear as well. But in exchange, I want you to help me with the flower bed next time."

"You've got yourself a deal." Takeshi said as he turned to Gasper, who was still shivering. "Now then, Gasper-kun. I know you must be exhausted and frightened, but how do you feel about trying out Azazel's method? There are no guarantees, but you might be able to start getting the hang of controlling your Sacred Gear."

"C-Control…" Gasper muttered. "Will I b-be able to do it? E-Even though I'm a shut-in V-Vampire that only causes trouble…?"

"That depends on you." Takeshi said. "However, I think there's nothing to lose here."

Gasper looked uncertain, but eventually nodded in a timid manner. Takeshi turned to Genshirou, who nodded and shot his line at Gasper, wrapping it around his forehead. As his Sacred Gear's power was slowly being drained, Takeshi turned to Koneko.

"Could you borrow some volleyballs from the gym's storeroom, Koneko-chan?" Takeshi asked. "We're going to need them for Gasper-kun's target practice."

"…I'm on it."

Koneko said, running into the forest. Once Genshirou's Sacred Gear had drained enough of Gasper's power and Koneko had returned with the volleyballs, Takeshi beckoned at everyone to pick up a volleyball before turning to Gasper.

"OK, the objective of this exercise is simple, Gasper-kun." Takeshi said. "We'll be throwing these balls at you, and you'll be using your Sacred Gear to stop them in midair. Of course, we'll make sure not to aim at you directly, right, Xenovia?"

"Hey, why are you addressing me specifically?"

"I wonder why." Takeshi remarked with a deadpan expression before turning to Gasper again. "You got all that, Gasper-kun?"

"Y-Yessssss!" Gasper said. "I-I'll do my bessssssst!"

"In that case, on my mark, ladies and gentlemen!" Takeshi said as all he and his companions picked up the volleyballs. "Ready, aim…fire!"

After saying so, Takeshi, Pandora, Koneko, Xenovia and Genshirou threw their volleyballs at Gasper. Despite his evident fear and reluctance, Gasper stood his ground, freezing two balls that came into his field of his vision while the others sailed past him. The practice continued like this, with Gasper's rate of success fluctuating between passable and abysmal. Moreover, if he accidentally froze someone or a part of their body by looking at them, he would run screaming into the forest while shouting 'I'm sorryyyyyy!'. Takeshi was forced to go after him several times and coax him into returning back to practice.

This is going to be a long and harsh road… Takeshi thought as he brought Gasper back to the others for the umpteenth time. But there's no other way. If he gets a little confidence and starts getting used to his Sacred Gear, I'm sure he can make good progress.

"It looks like you're working hard, everyone." Rias said, emerging from the forest while carrying a basket filled with sandwiches. "Why don't you take a break for now? I'm sure you're all starving."

Everyone gathered around Rias, with the exception of Gasper, who sat further away from the group with Genshirou's line still wrapped around his head and draining the excess power that had built up in him.

"This is delicious!" Genshirou exclaimed, digging into his sandwich with an expression of pure bliss. "If only I could enjoy Student President's food as much as I do this…"

"From the way your expression has fallen, I assume Sona hasn't improved her cooking one bit." Rias said with a sympathetic expression. "I feel for you and the others, Saji-kun. I can't understand how Leviathan-sama enjoys Sona's abhorrent creations so much."

"Is Sona-senpai that bad?"

"Let me put it this way." Rias responded to Takeshi's question. "She's as terrible with cooking as you are with singing."

"Ouch." Takeshi grimaced. "That bad, huh?"

"…I hope we never have to taste any of her…creations in the future then." Koneko said while shuddering. "Why hasn't anyone pointed this out to her?"

"Like I said, Leviathan-sama enjoys the taste of Sona's food." Rias said. "If word gets out that we criticized her and she changes its flavor as a result…I don't even want to imagine what sort of temper tantrum she'll throw."

"Looks like I need to not only train my body, but my stomach as well if I want to stand next to Student President…" Genshirou muttered as he stood up, dismissing his Sacred Gear. "Thanks for the meal, Rias-senpai, but I really need to get back to tending to the flower bed. Later, everyone."

"Thanks for the help so far, Saji-kun." Takeshi said. "I'll make sure to give you a hand as well later. Can I count on you in the future?"

"As long as I have time, sure." Genshirou said. "Good luck with the newcomer, Ryuugamine."

Once Genshirou had left, Rias turned to Gasper, who was sitting under the tree and looking like he as trying to blend into the background.

"Now then, Gasper." Rias said, clapping her hands. "Your power should have been regulated to the perfect level thanks to Saji-kun and your eyes look like they can handle a bit more strain. I'll accompany you as well from now on, so let's continue practicing. Everything starts from putting in effort after all! Now, show me your fortitude, Gasper!"

"Y-Yessss, President!"

"As always, Rias is relentless when it comes to training…"

Takeshi chuckled as he and the others resumed Gasper's training alongside Rias.

Later…

"Man, I sure miss Azazel's contracts…"

Takeshi remarked with a disappointed sigh after teleporting back to the clubroom following yet another successful, but low-paying contract. Although he acknowledged that he couldn't act all spoiled and expect every contract to be a gold mine the way Azazel's contracts had been, that didn't prevent him from longing for these times.

"Good job once again, Takeshi." Rias said after reading the questionnaire that had appeared on her desk. "There are no more clients asking for you tonight, so you're dismissed. I'll stay here and wait until Yuuto, Akeno and Pandora are done, and then I have to compile a report for my brother. Looks like my compensation to you will have to wait a little longer."

"That's alright, Rias." Takeshi said. "To be honest, I'd like to try talking to Gasper-kun a bit. We were so busy with his training that we didn't have time to sit down and have a good face-to-face talk."

"Do you…do you think you can help that child?" Rias said with a hesitant expression. "Every member of this Peerage had their own scars to bear, but Gasper has probably had it much worse than anyone else here."

"Now that you mention it, how did you meet Gasper-kun, Rias?" Takeshi asked. "Vampires are known to be notoriously xenophobic, so you can't have run into him in their territories."

"No, I'm afraid our first meeting was similar to the one I had with Yuuto." Rias said with a downcast expression. "Gasper…from the time he was born, his life was filled with misfortune. His mother died at childbirth, and the noble Vampires shunned him for being a half-blood. Their stance on blood purity is much more severe compared to us Devils, so you can imagine how Gasper was treated."

"On top of that, he had a time-stopping Sacred Gear he was unable to control, which would have caused more than a few inconveniences." Takeshi remarked. "I wouldn't be surprised if they took drastic measures against him after viewing him as too much trouble."

"Right." Rias said. "The House of Vladi exiled Gasper from Vampire territory, with him wandering around for a bit before having the rotten luck to encounter a pair of individuals belonging to a Vampire-hunting clan. They attacked Gasper and left him for dead. Fortunately, I was touring the human villages in the outskirts of Vampire territory in the hopes of seeing one at the time, which is how I came across the dying Gasper and reincarnated him."

"You have a knack for stumbling upon unique individuals, don't you, Rias?" Takeshi smiled. "Good thing you do, otherwise me, Akeno-san, Yuuto and Gasper-kun would be six feet under right now."

"It's a shame that I needed to be there in the first place." Rias said with a melancholic expression. "It would have been far better if they didn't need to suffer as they have. But there's no use wishing for the past to be undone. In any case, the harsh treatment he received while living in Vampire territory is the root cause of Gasper's issues. It won't be easy to bring him out of his shell."

"But you won't stop trying, will you?"

"Of course not." Rias said. "There's nothing I wish more than to have that child laugh and play alongside us without reserve. Perhaps all of us together will be able to accomplish what I've failed to do on my own so far."

"You bet we will."

Takeshi said while grinning. He then exited the clubroom and headed for Gasper's room. Much to his surprise, he came across Koneko, who had turned away from the sealed door and was about to leave.

"…Senpai?" Koneko raised an eyebrow upon taking notice of Takeshi. "What are you doing here?"

"The same thing as you I guess." Takeshi said. "I wanted to see if I could chat with Gasper-kun for a while. You know, have him get used to me and the others a bit. Did you talk with him?"

"…A bit, but only behind the door." Koneko said. "Gya-kun is scared of stopping others with his Sacred Gear…and scared of how people will treat him because of that."

"Yeah, it makes sense he feels that way." Takeshi nodded. "If someone were to stop me like that…I would probably feel suspicious and wary of that person to a degree. Gasper-kun seems harmless for the most part though, so I don't think this applies to him. There's also the fact that he can't affect me, for now at least, so maybe he'll be a bit more willing to talk to me face-to-face."

"…One can hope." Koneko said with a small smile. "Senpai seems to be talented on that department after all. Perhaps you can get Gya-kun to open up to you as well."

"We'll see." Takeshi said. "Are you heading back?"

"…My contracts are done for the night, so yes." Koneko said. "Meet you at your place later?"

"Sure thing."

Takeshi said as he gave Koneko a quick peck on the lips. Once Koneko had left, Takeshi turned his attention to the double doors in front of him and knocked once before addressing the sole occupant of the room.

"Gasper-kun, it's Takeshi. I want to talk with you for a bit. Can I come inside?"

"S-Senpai…?" Gasper's trembling voice came from behind the door. "I d-don't think this is such a good idea…"

"It'll be alright." Takeshi said, manifesting Cataclysm Zone. "Even if you use your ability, you won't be able to stop me. That's why, there's no need to be afraid. Also, I won't do anything bad to you, I promise. I'm just worried about you."

Gasper was silent for a few seconds, but then spoke.

"…W-Would it possible…to stay in my box?" Gasper said. "I won't close the lid…but it's the only way for me to relax…"

"No problem, Gasper-kun." Takeshi said. "Whatever makes you comfortable."

"T-Then…come on in."

Takeshi opened the door and stepped inside Gasper's room. Just like the young Dhampir had said, he was sitting inside his cardboard box, his arms wrapped around his knees as he stared at Takeshi with a fearful expression. Takeshi assumed he was afraid he might stop him despite his resistance to it so far. Sitting down cross-legged in order to be on the same level as him, Takeshi addressed Gasper.

"Is that cardboard box you're holing up really that comfortable for you?" Takeshi said. "Doesn't it feel all stuffy and claustrophobic in there?"

"N-Not really." Gasper said. "It's like an oasis for me in here. Feels like m-my worries are floating away …"

"I see." Takeshi said. "So, how did you feel about training today…apart from Xenovia and Koneko-chan's extreme methods, I mean. Do you feel a little more confident now?"

"I…don't know…" Gasper said with a downcast expression. "All I know is that I'm causing trouble for President and e-everyone else… I'm a useless shut-in that can't control his Sacred Gear… While you guys were busy fighting the Fallen Angels a while back…I was in here trembling like a c-coward… No-one should be bothering with someone like m-me…"

"If that was the case, President should have disposed of me long ago." Takeshi pointed at himself. "I'm the possessor of Cataclysm Zone, the prison that holds the seven worst Dragons to have ever lived. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more troublesome person than me in all the realms. Trust me, you pale in comparison."

"T-Takeshi-senpai is the E-Evil Dragon User!?" Gasper shrieked, further sinking into the cardboard box. "P-Please don't eat me! I don't taste good, I swearrrrrrrr!"

"No, no, I'm not going to eat you or anything, Gasper-kun…" Takeshi said, letting out an exasperated sigh. "That would go contrary to my goal to tame the power of this Sacred Gear and master it completely."

"Master it…?" Gasper said, having calmed down a bit. "Senpai…is actually trying to control the Evil Dragons…?"

"You bet I am." Takeshi said. "I've already managed to subjugate three so far, and I won't stop until I've taken control of all seven. However, I won't deny that there are still times where I'm scared. Times when I'm not sure I can do it. Even so, I will keep moving forward."

"W-Why…?" Gasper said. "How…do you have the strength to say such things…? If it was me…the fear of failure would have paralyzed me… A-Also, aren't you afraid…that you might change into someone completely different in the end…? That the you who masters your power…may lose something i-important in the way to the goal…?"

"Even if that's true, it doesn't change anything." Takeshi declared. "I will still strive to uphold my rules and protect those important to me. I'm certain that will never change. What about you, Gasper-kun? Do you have a reason to fight? You said you were dissatisfied with staying behind, so why don't you make standing next to us your goal?"

"I…do I have that r-right?" Gasper said with an uncertain expression. "I want to help P-President, repay her for what she's done for me. But when my power causes her and the others to stop… I hate it… When I see the faces of those I care for being stopped…I can't s-stand it. I can't help but feel they find me a b-bother… I'm scared…that one day, she'll say I'm more t-trouble than I'm worth…"

"If she hasn't said that for me after all the trouble I've caused her, there's no way she'll ever say this to you." Takeshi said. "Also, you're not alone, Gasper-kun. Me, Pandora, Koneko, Akeno-san, we all know how it feels like to have a power that you hate and/or can't control. Heh, feels like a common feature in this Peerage. But that's why you can depend on us. We will never hate you or turn you away."

Gasper didn't respond as Takeshi kept talking.

"However, if you don't want to fight or anything like that, you don't have to force yourself." Takeshi said. "What I and the others want above all else is for you to be happy. President has told me about the harsh life you've led so far, so I can say with certainty that you deserve this."

Takeshi rubbed Gasper's head, prompting the latter to let a faint smile.

"You are kind, Takeshi-senpai…" Gasper said. "Why…do you care for me…even though we've just met…?"

"You're my precious Kouhai." Takeshi smiled. "It's my responsibility as your Senpai to look after you. Do I really any other reason? More importantly, what do you want to do?"

"For President and e-everyone else's sake…I…want to t-try controlling my power…" Gasper said, a hint of resolve in his expression. "Staying behind while everyone else r-risks their life…I don't want that! Next time…next time, I w-want to prove…that even a useless shut-in like me can do s-something…!"

"Oh, that's a good answer fitting for a real man!" Takeshi grinned as he patted Gasper's back. "If you've found your determination, I'll accompany you until the end, Gasper!"

"Y-Yesssss, Senpai!"

"Look like you managed to get Gasper-kun to open up a bit. Not bad, Takeshi-kun."

Yuuto said with a smile as he entered Gasper's room. Takeshi noticed that he was holding a Holy Demonic Sword in his right hand for some reason.

"Pardon the intrusion." Yuuto said as he sat down next to the other two boys. "I wanted to try something that President suggested before."

"Does it have something to do with your Balance Breaker being active right now?"

"Yes." Yuuto nodded. "With my power raised like this, it should be possible for me to resist Gasper-kun's time stop as well. That way, we can have a conversation, at least for as long as I can keep my Balance Breaker active."

"Not bad, President." Takeshi said. "As expected from one of the women I fell in love with. Now then, since all guys from the Gremory group are present, why don't we have a little chat between men to strengthen our bonds?"

"Oh, that sounds a bit interesting." Yuuto said. "What do you have in mind?"

"I was thinking we could talk about girls, but since this'll probably turn into me monologuing, let's skip that." Takeshi said. "How about we talk about our dreams and plans for the future then? I'll start first. I plan on becoming an Ultimate-class Devil and receive my own territory from the Devil Kings! Oh, but branching into directing is also a small ambition of mine. I'd love to direct a tokusatsu show one day!"

"T-Tokusatsu…?" Gasper said. "Are these the t-transforming heroes I've been hearing about from some of my online c-clients?"

"The very same." Takeshi said. "Crafting a show that will move the hearts of children and adults alike, that would be amazing! Hmmm, but I've also been thinking about studying law and becoming a prosecutor down the line…"

"Looks like Takeshi-kun's got some solid ideas about his future already." Yuuto said. "As for me…I've been thinking about trying my hand in writing recently."

"Writing?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "First time I'm hearing that. What brought this about?"

"Lately, I've been thinking a lot about my future…and about the past as well." Yuuto said. "I'm done obsessing with revenge, but I still want to do something for my deceased friends. That's why I thought…that I could perhaps write stories about them using what I know about their personality and future goals as basis. My small way of honoring them and ensuring they live on in some form, as well as giving them the life they never had the chance to live."

"That sounds wonderful, Yuuto." Takeshi said. "I think you should go for it. Hey, maybe you could consult Shinra-senpai at some point. Saji-kun told me once that she's an avid reader and has written a couple of short stories of her own."

"Is that so?" Yuuto said. "Perhaps I could ask Saji-kun if he can arrange a meeting with her in the future, preferably after the conference is over."

"T-Takeshi-senpai and Yuuto-senpai are amazing for looking ahead like this…" Gasper said. "I don't really have a g-goal, but if I had a w-wish…there was a good friend who helped me w-while I was shunned by everyone back home. If p-possible, I'd like to see her a-again…and maybe bring her to this c-country as well."

"A girl, eh?" Takeshi said, a sly smirk on his face. "How unexpected. This sounds like a fascinating story. Why don't you tell us a bit more, Gasper? I'm a little curious."

"W-Well…we first met w-when I was six…"

Like that, the three boys spent the next two hours engaging in small talk among themselves.

Two days later…

"It's been some time since I last visited this place…"

Takeshi remarked as he stopped his motorcycle in front of the steps leading to the old shrine Akeno was using as her residence. Waiting for him there was Akeno herself, who was dressed in a shrine maiden's outfit and was sporting her usual sly smile.

"Welcome to my humble abode, Takeshi-kun." Akeno made a small bow before twirling around once. "You said before you wanted to see me wearing a shrine maiden's outfit, so here it is, your long-awaited moment. How do I look?"

"Far better than I could possibly have imagined." Takeshi said while checking her out. "It fits you to a T, Akeno-san. Beautiful, sacred and elegant at the same time, you truly look like a Yamato Nadeshiko. It kind of makes me want to kidnap you and lock you away in a display in order to gaze at you every day."

"Ara, ara, I'm glad it's to your liking." Akeno said with a pleased smile. "Maybe I could wear this outfit during…other occasions as well, ufufu~."

"We…we probably should get our mind out of the gutter for now." Takeshi said, slapping his cheeks once to focus. "There's an important meeting coming up after all. Are the representatives from Heaven here? Also, what about Rias? Is she coming too?"

"They arrived a few minutes ago." Akeno said. "Rias won't make it in time, probably due to her final meeting with Sirzechs-sama and Grayfia-san dragging on more than expected. She apologizes for that, but it can't be helped. The conference will start in a couple of days and there are several details that still need to be hammered down."

"What about you, Akeno-san?" Takeshi asked as the two youths climbed the stairs. "Shouldn't you be there with Rias?"

"She can do just fine even without me supporting her." Akeno said. "Moreover, I have to greet the person coming here as the highest-ranking member of the Peerage after Rias. To do otherwise might be considered an insult."

"Sounds like we'll be meeting a pretty important person from Heaven." Takeshi said. "Who is it?"

"You'll find out soon."

After Akeno said that, the two youths passed the archway and entered the courtyard. Waiting for them there were three individuals. One of them was Leon, and the other two were girls that looked about the same age as him, or perhaps slightly older. One of them was a stern-looking individual with long black hair tied up in a ponytail that reached her hips and indigo eyes, who wore a plain white shirt, jeans, a denim jacket and a red scarf around her neck. On her left hand, she held a Jian-like sword with a black-colored blade and a semicircular gold hilt.

The other person looked like a high-class lady with pale blond hair that seemed to be shining and kaleidoscope-like eyes that seemed to change color every second. She wore an elegant dark blue and black dress with several Enochian symbols embroidered on it. Although she was inhumanly beautiful, there was something about her that sent chills running down Takeshi's spine.

[That sword…] Orochi growled in Takeshi's mind. [Kusanagi, the blade that bastard Susanoo tore from my stomach during our first encounter. No, that's probably a replica imbued with holy power, but still…the original was supposed to be mine, a weapon refined and doused in my venom, and that asshole stole it! What the Hell!? Respect the property of others, damn it!]

To be fair, you had it coming. Takeshi thought. Moreover, when it comes to spoils of war, vae victis.

"Yo, Takeshi." Leon greeted his friend, with the two of them bumping their fists together. "How's it going? Everything alright?"

"Same as usual." Takeshi said, glancing at the girls behind him. "Who are the lovely ladies over there? Comrades of yours?"

"Let me introduce them." Leon said. "The black-haired girl is Amakusa Kaori, a descendant of the renowned Amakusa Shirou Tokisada and a member of the Catholic Church. The blond-haired one is Dia Serrano, a member of the Orthodox Church like me."

"Nice to meet you."

Kaori made a small bow as she said so, her stern expression remaining unchanged. Next to her, Dia also inclined her head, but said nothing. Whether it was because she was shy or because she didn't wish to associate with Devils at all, Takeshi couldn't say due to her serene expression.

"You're one lucky bastard, you know?" Takeshi grinned as he put his arm around Leon's shoulder. "Partnering with two beauties once again? The other male Church agents must be green with envy."

"Servants of Deus Trinity-sama are trained not to succumb to their base impulses." Kaori remarked. "We are not as tainted or hedonistic as you Devils."

"Pleasant attitude you've got there, Amakusa-san." Takeshi remarked. "Reminds me of another thick-headed former Church agent. It's a bit nostalgic to be honest."

"Let's not start arguing, you two." Leon said. "There's someone important from our side who wants to meet you, Takeshi."

"That's what you said in your message when you asked me to come here, but nothing more than that." Takeshi said. "Who's this important individual?"

"That would be me."

Turning to the side, where the voice had come from, Takeshi saw a handsome man with long blond hair and green eyes standing there. He was wearing an extravagant white robe with a gold finish, and a shining halo was hovering above his head. His most eye-catching feature however were the twelve golden wings growing from his back, illuminating the area with a divine light.

"It's a pleasure to meet you in person, current Evil Dragon User Ryuugamine Takeshi-kun." The man said with a smile as he approached Takeshi, offering his hand for a handshake. "I am Michael, the current leader of Heaven and chief of all Angels."

"…Michael?" Takeshi said with a shocked expression, shaking the man's hand in reflex. "You mean…the Michael!? The Archangel Michael recorded in the Bible!? You are him!?"

"Indeed I am." Michael chuckled. "I understand your shock, but this is an informal meeting, so there is no need to stand on ceremony. I am here because I wanted to speak with you for a bit."

"Speak…with me?" Takeshi pointed at himself. "What for? Is it because of what I am?"

"It's related to that." Michael said. "If you would be so kind as to accompany me inside the shrine, I will explain everything. Inquisitor Leon, would you join us as well?"

"Of course, Michael-sama."

Leon responded with a curt remark. Takeshi noted that his friend's expression was stiff for some reason, but couldn't dwell on that now. Guided by Akeno, the three men were brought into the main shrine. After surveying the surroundings for a few seconds, Michael turned to Takeshi.

"For starters, I would like to thank everyone in Rias Gremory's Peerage on behalf of Heaven for their invaluable assistance during the Kokabiel incident." Michael said, making a small bow. "Our united front averted what could have been a major and unsalvageable diplomatic incident, and it also became the impetus for this important conference. Once again, you have my gratitude."

"On behalf of Rias-sama, we thank you for your praise." Akeno said as she and Takeshi bowed. "We are more than happy to have helped in stopping our common foe."

"Now then, onto the main reason I requested this meeting." Michael said, taking out a small black box from his robe and offering it to Takeshi. "I wish to give this to you, Ryuugamine Takeshi. Consider it a gift from Heaven due to your contributions in the recent battle."

"A gift?" Takeshi said as he extended his hand, grabbing the box. "I'm not sure I—"

Takeshi's words were cut off as he felt a splitting headache assaulting him for a moment the moment he touched the box, wincing from the pain. It was as if new information was forcing itself into his brain with all the subtlety of a power drill.

"…You…do you know what this is, Michael-sama?" Takeshi said to Michael, a severe expression on his face. "What its function is…and what could happen if I use it?"

"I am well aware of all that." Michael said, a troubled expression on his face. "I confess I do not understand what Father was thinking when he created it. Perhaps he saw much farther than anyone in Heaven was aware of, including me. Regardless, I am convinced this is the right time for it to be passed on."

"Why?"

"Because I feel this is the turning point of the current era." Michael said. "Several Longinus possessors with unique circumstances and never-seen before abilities have been born over the past years, there is a great amount of unrest beneath the surface of our world, and for the first time in millennia, the Three Factions are sitting down to negotiate in good faith as equals. I can feel in the depths of my being that, for better or for worse, change is coming. That, of course, includes you and your current state."

Michael showed a gentle smile as he resumed speaking.

"Among your predecessors, you are the most unique one so far, having managed to make the vile Grendel submit and unlock three Balance Breakers at this point." Michael's smile became a bit wider upon seeing Takeshi's astonished expression. "Oh, don't be so surprised. I may not be as knowledgeable about Sacred Gears as Azazel, but even I can discern certain information from the quality and quantity of your aura."

"As expected of the almighty Archangel-sama, I suppose." Takeshi smirked. "Even if you say I'm unique though, I'm not sure that justifies handing this object to me. I'm still quite dangerous after all."

"You could say this is my gamble." Michael said. "You seem like a man of integrity, and Inquisitor Leon trusts you implicitly judging from his reports. I believe you will not misuse what was given to you, and that your future actions will have a positive effect when it comes to shaping the coming era. Moreover, with the upcoming leader gathering, it's better for all of us to be as prepared as possible for anything."

"So, it's supposed to be some sort of insurance then?" Takeshi said, glancing at the black box in his hand. "Are you perhaps expecting some sort of attack from outside then? Or maybe even from the inside?"

"This conference is a historic event, but also an ideal target for those who seek chaos." Michael said. "I cannot dismiss any possibility, for doing so might compromise the safety of those under me."

"In that case, I guess I too should have as many cards to play as I can." Takeshi said as he conjured a small magic circle, placing the box in it. "Thank you for this, Michael-sama. I will do my best to use it wisely."

"It is heartening to hear you say that." Michael said. "With this, my business here is concluded. I must take my leave now, for there are many things I need to look over in preparation for the summit. Inquisitor Leon, would you join me?"

"With your permission, I would like to remain here, Michael-sama." Leon said, his gaze focusing on the wall behind the Archangel. "I would like to speak with my friend here if that is alright with you."

"Of course." Michael said with a smile, though Takeshi thought he detected a hint of sadness in his expression. "I will have warrior Kaori and warrior Dia accompany me, and you can join us when you are ready."

"Thank you, Michael-sama."

Leon made a small bow. The four individuals stepped out of the shrine, with Kaori rushing to Michael's side. As for Dia, she approached Leon with slow steps, grabbing his sleeve and whispering something to his ear. Leon seemed to blush a bit before nodding, with Dia letting out a faint smile in response. After Michael, Kaori and Dia conjured a magic circle beneath them and vanished, Leon turned to Takeshi.

"I promised you some explanations about my origins after the Kokabiel battle and I intend to deliver." Leon said. "We should have a seat first though. This could take some time."

"In that case, would you like me to make you some tea?" Akeno suggested. "You're my guests here, so it's only proper that I treat you."

"I wouldn't mind some." Takeshi said. "The tea made by Akeno-san is exquisite."

"Since it's so highly recommended, I would like some tea as well if it's not too much trouble."

"No trouble at all." Akeno responded to Leon. "I'll be right back."

Once Akeno entered the shrine, Takeshi turned to Leon with a curious look on his face.

"So, is there some sort of friction between you and Michael-sama?" Takeshi asked. "You looked uncomfortable around him."

"You noticed, huh…?" Leon sighed. "I'll get to that later. First, let me start with a question. Do you know the term Miracle Child?"

"Can't say that I do." Takeshi said, and then frowned. "Oh, but didn't Kokabiel say something about that during our battle? He called you one, didn't he? Is it perhaps the term for Human/Angel hybrids like you?"

"You are correct on some level." Leon explained. "Miracle Children are indeed the offspring born from the union of an Angel and a member of another race, an incredibly rare phenomenon that happens once every four to five centuries."

"Why are these children such a rarity?" Takeshi asked. "No, to begin with, I thought Angels couldn't engage in sexual acts without falling and becoming Fallen Angels."

"There are exceptions to that rule, but the conditions required for intercourse between the prospective pair are very strict." Leon said. "First, a barrier has to be placed on the location where the act will occur, with the Angel and their mate having to pray the night before engaging in the act to purify their bodies. During the intercourse, the Angel and their mate aren't allowed to have lecherous thoughts while engaging in the act. They must remember the teachings at all times and have the mind of a Saint, as the intercourse must be initiated out of pure love. Only then will the Angel not fall, allowing the couple to conceive a child."

"Thank the Devil Kings I was reincarnated into a Devil." Takeshi said while whistling. "I don't think I would have had the mental discipline or fortitude to fulfil all these conditions while having sex with a beautiful female Angel. I'd probably cause her to fall in record time. No wonder such births are so rare."

"Yes, which is why the Church sought for a way to circumvent these requirements." Leon said. "That was when a proposal was brought forth about twenty two years ago based on an important event of our religion, the Annunciation. In the past, Deus Trinity impregnated the Virgin Mary using his divine power alone, incarnating into this world as the aspect of the Son, a human vessel with incredible power. The suggestion was to use the holy power of various Seraphs to replicate that feat and impregnate female warriors and nuns, who would in turn give birth to Miracle Children without the need for intercourse. That was the start of the Theotokos Project, a way for Heaven and the Church to bolster their ranks with exceptional warriors…or at least that was the surface reason."

Leon had a dark expression on his face as he kept talking.

"I only see the full picture now that I found out about Deus Trinity's death." Leon said. "Because he was the only one who could create new Angels, Heaven was incapable of increasing the Angels' numbers the way Fallen Angels and Devils do. The Theotokos Project was the answer to this issue, with Raziel-sama of the Seraphs supervising it."

"Why not opt for a reincarnation system like the one we Devils use?" Takeshi asked. "That would have saved you a lot of time and trouble."

"It seems attempts were and are still being made, but they've been unsuccessful so far." Leon said. "More importantly, the Theotokos Project had another grand goal; to create a replacement for the deceased Deus Trinity."

"A…replacement?" Takeshi frowned. "Humans were trying to create a God? That never ends well…"

"Well, not exactly a replacement." Leon said. "Perhaps a descendant is a more accurate word. There were sacred objects imbued with Deus Trinity's lingering aura all around the world, so the idea was to collect that aura and use it to impregnate a chosen woman that would give birth to the Second Christ. The rest of us born from this project…we were guinea pigs meant to fine-tune the process in order to ensure its success when Deus Trinity's divine power was used as the 'father'."

"If they had to refine the process, that means there were failures at first, no?" Takeshi narrowed his eyes. "Perhaps even deaths? If so, this is starting to sound a lot like the Holy Sword Project, and I have some very strong feelings towards that particular Church screw-up."

"You and me both." Leon scowled. "Unfortunately, like you suspect, the Theotokos Project generated its own substantial body count. Dozens of volunteers died while being infused with the Seraphs' holy power, and many of them suffered miscarriages that also led to deaths at times. In hindsight, it was only natural. The virgin birth of the Son was a miracle originating from a God, and humans, despite what they might think at times, are not Gods. Even the Seraphs are incapable of mimicking the Lord's accomplishments. In the end however, there were successfully births. I, Subject Seven, was among them, and so were the girls you met just now."

"You were the seventh?" Takeshi said. "How many successful births did this project yield?"

"Ten, and the final result was the one they sought." Leon said. "A child with the potential to take the deceased Deus Trinity's place. The project was discontinued after that when several higher-ups considered the mounting body count unacceptable, especially since successful births were still few and far between and the birth of Subject Ten was a close call that resulted in their mother's death. There were also rumblings and outrage from high-ranking members of the clergy, who considered the notion of trying to mimic a God's miracles or creating one heretical and blasphemous, which also contributed to the project's termination."

"Are you sure it's alright to reveal all these secrets to me?" Takeshi said. "Shouldn't the details of this project be classified or something?"

"Maybe it's not, but I'm sick and tired of secrets and lies." Leon said. "Besides, judging from Kokabiel's words, the Fallen Angels already know several details about it, and I would bet your leaders aren't oblivious to it either."

"Perhaps you're right…" Takeshi said. "So, since we're on that subject, I'm curious about something. The Seraph who donated his power for your birth, who was he?"

"You met him just now."

"I…you're kidding me, right?" Takeshi said with an incredulous expression. "Michael? The Archangel Michael is your father? Damn, human royalty has got nothing on that… Does that make you, like, a prince of Heaven or something? Next in line to rule them all if your old man croaks by any chance?"

"Nothing like that, and in fact, this relationship has only brought a ton of unwanted baggage for me…" Leon sighed. "An absentee father, a bunch of superiors salivating at hitting the jackpot by having the 'son' of Michael possess the Boosted Gear as well, and several members of the clergy trying to suck up to me in order to take advantage of my supposed connections to Heaven so that they can curry favor with the Seraphs. Trust, having my parent be Michael-sama has only been a source of constant headaches so far."

"Family issues doesn't even begin to cover this mess…" Takeshi muttered. "But if you had so much potential, how the Hell did you end up in Japan with Olivia-san for that one year? You'd think the Church would start training you like there's no tomorrow as soon as you learned how to walk."

"That's because my mother, bless her, sealed my powers shortly after I was born." Leon said with a smile. "She wasn't too keen on having her son being raised as a weapon for the Church. Because of that, I was branded as defective and a failure, an odd case that had failed to inherit any powers, which is why I was left alone."

"But that didn't last, did it?" Takeshi asked. "You said to me before that your talent was discovered and that you were recruited by the Orthodox Church. What happened?"

"Shortly after we returned back to England, I went out on my own to explore a ruined mansion near our house." Leon said. "There, I was attacked by several Barghests that had made the ruin their territory. I was almost mauled to death by them, but at that time, the seal broke and my full powers were released. Honestly, I was pretty freaked out when a red gauntlet appeared on my hand and red wings grew from my back out of the blue. Thanks to my awakened powers, I took down the Barghests and rushed back home, feeling confused and terrified.

"I bet Olivia-san freaked out big time when she saw you."

"She did, because she knew what would come next." Leon said. "The Church had been keeping an eye on us all this time just in case. When they noticed my power, they rushed to recruit me and inducted me into the Exorcist Order despite my mother's protests. For the next years, I received training, went on quite a few missions, rose to the position of Inquisitor, partly due to my lineage, and was eventually dispatched to Japan to recover the Excaliburs. The rest is history."

"Your tea is ready."

Akeno, who had returned in the meantime, placed two steaming cups on the table before taking her leave again. Takeshi assumed she wanted to give the two of them privacy. After taking a sip from his cup, Leon let out a satisfied sigh.

"This is very good." Leon said. "I daresay it's one of the best cups of tea I've ever had so far."

"Right?" Takeshi grinned as he took a sip as well. "Our Akeno-san is an expert at this after all. Back to the matter at hand, weren't you resentful when the Church forced you to fight for them? Didn't you hate them for treating you as they did? I know I would have been."

"Oh, trust me, I was plenty resentful in the beginning alright." Leon said while frowning. "I despised my circumstances, and I hated my existence. I hated that I was born to be a weapon, and I hated all these powers I was granted. They were nothing but a burden that prevented me from living a normal life. I was never motivated during training when I first started, and I would often be scolded for my lack of progress. But a few months later…everything changed."

Leon took another sip from his cup before continuing.

"I was part of a team that was dispatched to contain a Vrykolakas outbreak in northern Greece that was close to one of our major Churches." Leon said while looking towards the sky. "My inexperience and sloppy training really shined there. I would have been killed by these monsters if it wasn't for several of my teammates, a couple of whom were my friends too, who laid down their lives to save mine."

Leon gripped his cup tighter, a pained expression on his face as he kept speaking.

"…It was my weakness and my immaturity that got them killed." Leon said through gritted teeth. "If I had studied and practiced seriously…I could have saved them, and perhaps saved even more lives that day. That's when I truly understood my shortsightedness. Resentful as I was of my circumstances, I couldn't let others suffer for my grudge. If I didn't stand on the battlefield, someone less talented than me would have to take my place and potentially lose their life. Most Church warriors are upstanding individuals who fight to protect the innocent and uphold the teachings. Letting their lives be lost because of a brat's temper tantrum was unacceptable."

"That sounds just like my overly responsible friend." Takeshi said with a smile. "After that, you threw yourself into training in order to improve yourself?"

"More or less." Leon said. "In any case, that's everything regarding my boring past."

"No, no, if your past is boring, then what should I call mine?" Takeshi said. "Thanks for sharing all that with me, Leon. Trust me, I don't intend to reveal anything regarding what you just told me to anyone else unless you give the OK."

"Even if your master or the Devil Kings were to order you?"

"I don't see any reason they would do so, but even then, I would say nothing." Takeshi said. "Rias might get a bit annoyed, but she'll understand, I'm sure."

"Thanks, Takeshi." Leon smiled. "Since we're in the subject of secrets…you think you can tell me what Michael-sama gave you just now? He never mentioned anything about a gift, only that he wanted to meet you when he briefly spoke to me about you."

"Something dangerous." Takeshi said with a serious expression, looking around for a bit. "It's like this…"

Takeshi whispered something to Leon's ear, with the Red Dragon Emperor paling.

"I see…" Leon muttered. "Definitely a last resort among last resorts. I hope you don't have to use it, but if he gave it to you…it's almost guaranteed there'll be trouble in the conference."

"I pity the idiot who decides to launch an attack on the place where some of the strongest members of our respective factions are present." Takeshi said. "But if those hypothetical enemies do come, so much the better for me. Long-winded discussions get boring after a while when you're not participating. Some action will be perfect for stretching my shore muscles."

"I, on the other hand, wish that this summit proceeds without any problems." Leon said. "But if we have to fight, then we will fight. With that said, I'll be taking my leave now. I'll see you again at the meeting."

"Have fun in the meantime." Takeshi smirked. "Preferably with Serrano-san in a nice, secluded place. You seemed a little embarrassed around her. Is she perhaps your girlfriend? Hm?"

Leon said, his face having turned into an impassive mask as he and Takeshi bumped fists, with Leon vanishing in a flash of light. A while afterwards, Akeno emerged from the shrine and approached Takeshi.

"Are you done with your talk?" Akeno asked. "Don't worry, I made sure not to eavesdrop or anything. I'm not so boorish as to intrude in a personal talk between two friends."

"That thought never crossed my mind, Akeno-san." Takeshi said, drinking the rest of his tea in one go. "Since the official business has concluded, how about the two of us go out for an early lunch? It will be my treat."

"Actually…I already had something else in mind." Akeno said with some hesitation. "If you don't mind, I'd like you to accompany me somewhere for a bit. It's a special place for me…and I'd appreciate it if you were there too."

"Of course." Takeshi said. "Escorting a beautiful lady like Akeno-san is always a privilege."

"Ara, ara, you always say the nicest things." Akeno smiled. "In that case, shall we be off, my dashing escort? Ufufu~."

Takeshi smiled as Akeno put his arms around his, conjuring a teleportation magic circle beneath them that let out a bright flash of light. Next thing he knew, he was standing outside of a graveyard which was filled to the brim with gravestones as far as the eye could see.

"This place…" Takeshi said as he looked around. "Is this perhaps where your mother…?"

"…Yes." Akeno said with a somber expression. "It's the anniversary of her death, so I came here to pay my respects like every year. I understand this might be a tad too depressing for you, so if you want to wait here of head back—"

"Don't be stupid." Takeshi said, entwining his hand with hers. "It's a given that I'll stay with you. Lead the way, Akeno-san."

"…Thank you, Takeshi-kun."

Akeno squeezed his hand once as the two started walking towards the small temple next to the graveyard. Once they had thoroughly washed their hands in the basin there, they collected water in a pair of pails that Akeno brought out from a magic circle and headed into the graveyard. After passing through several gravestones with a number of sakura trees growing between them, they arrived at a small one where the name [Himejima Shuri] and a date of death were engraved on it.

"Hello again, mother…"

Akeno said with a small voice as she joined her hands in prayer, with Takeshi doing the same. After that, they retrieved their pails and started slowly pouring water onto the gravestone, carefully washing it. Once they were done, Akeno conjured another magic circle, taking out a bouquet of white chrysanthemum flowers and placing on it on the grave. She then lit the candle and offered incense that she had also brought out from the magic circle. Takeshi and Akeno joined their hands in prayer once again for a while before Akeno spoke.

"I can't believe a year has already passed since the last time I was here." Akeno said. "As you can see, I'm doing well…thanks to you. I've started my third year in Kuoh Academy alongside my best friend, and some new members have joined our club. It's really become much livelier than before. We've also had some tough battles, but we've managed to pull through in the end. The current year certainly seems to be filled with excitement so far."

Akeno chuckled for a bit, and then a sad smile appeared on her face.

"…I miss you." Akeno said, her voice breaking a bit and tears forming in her eyes. "A day doesn't go by without me wishing you were here. I wanted to tell you all this in person…for us to laugh, cry and get angry about things together…"

Takeshi put his arm around Akeno's shoulder, bringing her closer to him and stroking her head as she cried. Right now, her persona as the Queen and older sister of the group had disappeared, leaving behind only a lonely and hurt girl near his age. Feeling like he should also say something, Takeshi turned to the gravestone.

"Erm, Shuri-san…" Takeshi said with some hesitation. "Hello there. I'm Ryuugamine Takeshi, Akeno-san's…friend. I…am extremely grateful that you brought Akeno-san to this world and protected her back then. She has become an important person to everyone and me, and I can't imagine how our lives would be without her. Truly, thank you."

Takeshi bowed once before continuing.

"You don't have to worry about Akeno-san, Shuri-san." Takeshi said with a resolute look. "In your place, I swear I will protect her. Not only that, but I promise that I will also make her happy for sure. I won't ever let her experience such sadness again. You can count on that."

"Takeshi-kun…" Akeno murmured, a healthy blush on her face. "That speech right now…it sounded a bit like a confession… Do I dare hope…?"

"I don't think there's any reason to delay…well, us any longer." Takeshi said with a smile. "Maybe this wasn't the best place or time for this, but I felt the need to make my intent clear in front of Shuri-san. But if it's an inconvenience or terrible timing on my part, I apologize and—"

"Takeshi-kun." Akeno placed her fingers on his lips, silencing him. "Please stop talking and kiss me already."

"Right away, ma'am."

Takeshi smirked as he leaned forward, his lips overlapping with Akeno's. She pressed closer to him, moaning a bit as his tongue entered her mouth, deepening their passionate kiss. Both seemed set to devour each other, their lust rising and their moans becoming louder as they grinded against one another. Seeing that they were getting carried away, Takeshi broke the kiss, stroking Akeno's cheek.

"Aw, why did you stop?" Akeno pouted. "We were just getting to the good part."

"While I appreciate your fervor and passion, this really isn't the time or place." Takeshi said. "I wouldn't want your mother to start haunting me because we went too far on a sacred place such as this."

"Oh, I wouldn't worry about that." Akeno said with a smirk. "She was quite passionate herself at times, with little regard for her surroundings. Still, you have a point there. However, since I'm your girlfriend now, I have a request, Takeshi-kun."

"What is it?" Takeshi said. "If it's within my power, I will grant it."

"It's nothing too extravagant." Akeno said. "I want you to drop the '-san'. Call me Akeno from now on like you did in the mansion back then. Please?"

Takeshi couldn't help but find her begging and expectant expression adorable. He wanted to tease her a bit, but couldn't find it in him to do so now.

"You got it…Akeno." Takeshi said, with Akeno showing him a bright smile in response. "However, in exchange, you must drop the '-kun' as well. It's not fair if I'm the only who does it."

"Sure thing…Takeshi." Akeno said while giggling. "Ufufu, it truly feels like our relationship has progressed. It's making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside."

Akeno then dove into Takeshi's embrace, wrapping her hands around him.

"…Don't ever leave me." Akeno said with a muffled voice. "I don't want to lose another important person. Promise me…promise me you'll stay with me always."

"It's a promise." Takeshi said, stroking her head. "There's no way I'll ever leave you alone, Akeno. Even if I have to fight Death himself, I will always come back to you and the others."

"If you break that promise, there'll be Hell to pay, mister." Akeno warned him with a playful smile after the two separated. "I will scour all realms, find the resting place of your soul and give you pain beyond your wildest dreams. You can count on it."

"Scary." Takeshi smirked. "It's a good thing I don't intend to give you any reason to treat me in such a manner."

"Good boy." Akeno said, rubbing Takeshi's head. "I'm done paying my respects, so we should head back. Having our first lunch together as boyfriend and girlfriend…for some reason that makes me incredibly happy, ufufu~."

"In that case, let's not waste any time."

Takeshi said as he put his arm around Akeno's waist, conjuring a magic circle beneath them. One flash of light later, the two of them found themselves back in Akeno's shrine. Waiting for them there were Rias and Koneko, an impatient expression on the former's face and an impassive one on the latter's case.

"Finally." Rias said. "I was wondering where you two had gone…and now I'm left wondering why Akeno's clinging to you like that, Takeshi."

"…Suspicious." Koneko remarked with a frown. "Akeno-san looks like she's glowing."

"Ara, ara, the secret is out already." Akeno giggled. "Well, it's like this."

Akeno grabbed Takeshi's face and pulled him into a searing kiss, with Rias and Koneko letting out surprised gasps. Akeno separated from him after a few seconds with a mischievous expression on her face. Takeshi let out a sigh before turning to the other two girls.

"…Not the way I was planning to break the news to you, but it can't be helped now, I guess." Takeshi said as he put his hand on Akeno's shoulder. "Akeno and I have just become lovers."

"Ufufu, I really like the sound of that, Takeshi."

Akeno chuckled as she scooted closer to him with a content smile on her face. Rias and Koneko looked at each other, letting out a resigned sigh.

"…It was bound to happen sooner or later." Koneko said. "Akeno-san has been aiming for Senpai for quite some time."

"Yes, this was to be expected." Rias said. "However, I'm worried that she'll turn Takeshi into some sort of beast…or rather even more of a beast than he already is…"

"Ara, ara, would that be so bad, Rias?" Akeno smiled. "I'm sure you'll both grow to love it in the end, ufufu~."

"Just keep things in moderation, Akeno…" Rias said, rubbing her temples. "In any case, since my meeting is done, I was planning for the three of us to go out and have lunch, but I think it's only fair that we leave you two alone for now. It's your first outing as a couple after all."

"…But you will make it up to us." Koneko said while staring at Takeshi. "We have needs too."

"That's a given." Takeshi said. "Thank you for your understanding, girls."

Rias and Koneko nodded with a smile as they teleported away.

"Give me a few minutes, Takeshi." Akeno said. "I need to change into something more casual first, and then we'll be on our way."

"Take your time, Akeno-san."

Once Akeno had left, Takeshi took out the black box Michael had given him, staring at it with an intense look.

"I suppose I should prepare myself in case the worst does happen…"

Takeshi muttered as he turned his gaze to the sky, where clouds had started to gather.

This concludes Chapter 29. First, in response to your questions.

To Disappointed: I understand you're not pleased with Takeshi's decision to join the Devils. However, keep in mind that, in-universe, he didn't exactly have a wealth of options available. He questioned the Devils' Peerage system before and has a rudimentary understanding of how unfair it is. However, trying to join some other faction, if he even knew where to look for them, would be an instant death sentence due to his status as the Evil Dragon User and the general 'kill on sight' policy this entails. As such, he went for the option with the greatest chance of survival.

To Ryukipendragon: Yes, the final Balance Breaker will be extremely powerful because it combines the power of all seven Evil Dragons, not just Crom Cruach. That's three Heavenly Dragon-class beings plus four above Dragon King-class beings, so it's quite formidable.

To yliaster: Inserts songs for Leon and Vali, eh? For Leon, I'd use Kakusei from Kamen Rider Blade, and for Vali, Roots of the King from Kamen Rider Kiva.

Gasper's training in mastering his Sacred Gear finally begins, though it will be a long and arduous process like in canon. The details behind the Church's Theotokos Project that gave birth to Leon and others similar to him have been revealed here. The other seven subjects will also debut at some point later down the line. Also, Akeno and Takeshi have finally become official because I think I've dragged that out long enough.

Well, that's all for now. As always, please read, review, favorite, follow, but most of all, enjoy!

See you all next time!
