The screen began to bubble and boil as the familiar silver door rose from it's depths, the thick purple chains corroding and breaking apart as the door opened up and bathed everything in dark purple.
From the tainted light, came a single red eye that glared at the screen before the door slammed shut and everything became static, a crumbling rose symbol appearing every so often as the title began to form.
The Ruinverse: Chapter Fifty Five, Weiss, The Great And Powerful.
Xxxxxxx
-Remnant, Solitas, Mantle-
The sun shone down within the crater known as Mantle, its citizens living impoverished or crap-filled lives in 'the slums' but overall, they were happy to have working jobs or are alive to see another sunrise.
Light shone on the mile long pipes, tethered to the floating 'island' of Atlas above, as for all the world, this day would be another normal blip in the cosmic clock known as reality.
Creek.
Creeeeeek.
Citizens closest to the tethered pipes blinked in confusion, as if they heard something buckling under its own weight yet couldn't pinpoint the source of the noise for a brief moment.
Creeeeek.
Clank!
Bolts broke apart as the metallic sheets lining the pipes began to be pulled in an upwards direction, like a string being pulled or a tripwire being tightened.
Clank!
SNAP!
SNAP!
And in an instant, the pipes were ripped apart from their foundation points, causing massive damage to the nearby structure as many of Mantle's citizens looked on in confusion and horror.
For without the tethers, how will Atlas remain afloat or worse yet….will it be able to remain in the air at all!?
As some of the downtrodden of Mantle's lower mining facilities looked upwards towards the sky, they saw the floating city of Atlas…moving high into the sky!?
"What in blazes?" muttered one of the faunus workers as they were busy pushing a trolly full of Fire Dust out of the mines, only to see the accused city of Atlas rising higher into the air.
But within the span of a few minutes…a loud hissing sound could be heard all across the city, like bubbling pops of grease against a frying pan.
And it was getting louder and louder with every second.
SIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSS!
"Wait….is it….shit!" the faunus yelled in horror before running away. "ATLAS IS FALLING!"
"Oh my gods!"
"AHHHH!"
"I DON'T GET PAID FOR THIS!"
As humans and faunus ran for their lives, the island city began to accelerate towards the ground, its own Hard Light 'barrier' sparking with superheated flames.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
With the sound louder than any explosion before or since, the two cities became one once more, explosive material raining back down along with millions of tons of ash, soil, bedrock and liquified Dust, buildings sinking deep into the crater along with anyone unlucky enough to be caught in the fissures.
Dust covered the screen as the sound of snapping metal echoed in the background, followed by the screams of millions, all crying out for their lives before being snuffed out by the merciless hands of death.
(Several minutes later)
The dust began to settle as everything…laid in ruins, the great structures of the Solitas continent laid broken and submerged in the enlarged sink trap, continuously 'sucking' in anything not connected to the ground as the barrier protecting Atlas laid half broken, the generators still functioning in some parts but allowing other spots to fail.
Mantle fared no better, as everything was buried under tons of rock, steel and mangled bodies, a sign of destruction even greater than the Grimm themselves.
Yet in this apocalyptic landscape…there were survivors, those that either held onto Atlas' building for dear life, those currently away on airships, individuals hidden in the 'Donut' at the time of the collision or, for those in Mantle, civilians that were hidden away in deep mine tunnels miles away from the impact crater.
All of them were conjugating a few miles away from ground zero, each one bloodied or badly hurt from the initial collision and subsequent explosive impact, as they were scared, fearful, confused and trying to regain their bearings.
Wooosh.
Some of the survivors looked up and saw the Atlasian fleet, previously stationed a few miles away for a military drill, floating above them as smaller Atlasian Dropships began to land in front of the survivors.
WOOOOOSH!
Click.
From these airships calm various members of the Atlasian Military, each one holding their weapons in the ready position as General James Ironwood walked out, his face trying to mask his shock and disbelief over the previous few minutes of destruction.
'By the gods….such destruction.' Ironwood thought while trying to rationalize this sudden event, getting nothing in return as a result. 'Just how did this happen? The relic was supposed to keep this from happening…and the Gravity Dust was supposed to kick in as well….? Just what just happened?!'
"General." said one of the soldiers, breaking the man's train of thought in the process. "Your orders?"
He turned to the soldier and took a silent breath. "Search for survivors, help those that need it and get me anyone, both Atlasian and Mantleian, that can explain to me how this happened."
"Yes, general." they all said before scattering across the broken wasteland of dirt and metal, all the while Ironwood was hoping that his Ace-Ops team would make it here in time for the relief effort, given they have been called away from Atlas on a mission of great importance.
That mission….involving Ozpin and his Fall Maiden.
'Damn it Ozpin, you had to call my best Specialists to Vale for a small 'scare'. All the while my CITY fell and destroyed another one of MY cities!' He thought as he saw many of the survivors looking at him with fear and distrust, a byproduct of both his own actions as one of Atlas' pillars and the complete destruction of their homes and lives. 'This is going to be a long relief effort…especially when the Grimm will show up eventually. Ugh, could this day get any worse than it already has?'
Woooooooooosh.
Looking up towards the east, Ironwood noticed something moving towards the ruined cities, that being a small slim white airship with four X-shaped nacelles on either side of the ship, black rectangular glass on the cockpit, two small wings behind the upper nacelles, four long blue banners with the SDC emblem steaming out from the nacelles, gray points on each of the nacelles, and three rectangular lines on the sides of the fuselage.
'Wait, an SDC Airship? But the only ones that were outside the city belonged to Specialist Winter and I know for a fact that Jacques was in Atlas when it collided with Mantle.' He thought as the ship moved closer and closer to his location. 'But who else would….wait. Could it be?'
WOOOOOOOOOSSSH!
The sound of engines echoed across the area as the airship landed a few feet away from the general, a gray ramp moving outwards from the snowflake emblemed hatch onto the dirt covered ground.
Clank.
Clank.
Clank.
Clank.
From the airship came a short pale skinned young woman with long white hair that was pulled back into an off-center ponytail, pale blue eyes, a B cup chest and small ass, wearing a white long sleeved high collared military coat with black snowflake-like patterns on the long trail and sleeves along with black lining, a white long sleeved hip length military dress with a pentagon-like opening over the chest, a light gray undershirt with a black snowflake emblem in the center, black armbands on the shoulders, a white peaked military cap with a deep white snowflake symbol near the top along with a black icicle-like symbol overlapping it, sapphire blue shades hanging from the opening of her dress, white gloves, four black belts around her waist, stomach and shoulders with gray buckles, light gray pantyhose, white high heeled shoes and had a dark gray rapier with a four pronged hilt and a revolver-like chamber in between the prongs containing different colored Dust crystals within them, attached to her right hip as she walked towards the surprised general with a frown.
"General." she said with a cold and completely frustrated tone. "What have you done!?"
"Ms. Schnee, I had nothing to do with this…devastation."
"Likely story." She frowned while staring him down, despite being shorter than the man by a few inches, causing some of the survivors that were burying their deceased friends and family to take notice. "But who else would cause this disaster? To our cities no less."
"Do not insinuate that I had anything to do with Atlas' collision with Mantle." he narrowed his eyes, finding the youngest Schnee sister more annoying than her father, in so many ways. "And you have no say in matters like this."
"Oh yes I do. Especially when I'm the only one with authority here, given my family was killed off by a near planetary bombardment." She frowned while taking a deep breath. "And until my dear 'sister' arrives back in…the ruins of her own home, I'm technically the acting CEO of the SDC, and as the SDC is an 'ally' to the Atlasian Military, this IS a personal matter that I must be invested into, General."
Both glared at the other, having mixed feelings about each other since the day they first met.
For Ironwood, the Schnee was more ambitious and arrogant than even Jacques Schnee himself, making her a deadly wild card in the political and economic battleground.
And for Weiss Schnee, the 'robotic' general was just an idiot in a long line of idiots that dare to call her foolish or insignificant in the long run.
Antithesis to the other, oil to water, Grimm to their humanity. They always butted heads for a long time and yet….in the face of the complete destruction of two of Solitas' major cities.
They still acted like bitter enemies.
"Ms. Schnee, this doesn't concern you. Please, leave." Ironwood frowned, his eyes slightly glazed from the subconscious use of his semblance.
"Oh so you don't want my help? How typical of you." she frowned while shaking her head. "A heartless cyborg to the end."
"Don't. Push. It."
She rolled her eyes before looking at the devastation, her expression cold and filled with 'remorse'. "How many have survived?"
"I don't know. Maybe less than a few hundred, even less. It takes time."
"Then you better get started." Weiss said before her semblance activated, causing several glyphs to appear around her like platforms. "I will check the east, you check the rest of the ruins. Don't get in my way."
The older man frowned at her impudence as several arm-like ice constructs appeared from the Weiss' glyphs and started removing rubble in search of survivors. 'One of these days I will get her arrested for treason, just one day.'
(Some hours later)
"Thank you." said a bloodied man, his entire right arm cut clean off from shrapnel, as an Atlasian soldier helped him out of the rubble.
All around the broken and near empty rubble, the same scene was being placed but with variation as some were dragged out of deep pits, pulled off of hanging pipes by their legs, dangling from accidental cable nooses near the ruins of grand hotel windows, screaming in pain from under the engines of busted vehicles, trying to amputate their own limbs to escape a potential Dust related explosion or buried again in the dirt due to their grievous wounds and imputation body parts.
It was a….war zone, one won by no victor except for unconquerable death.
Fear, pain, grief and anger filled the minds of the survivors, both human and faunus, as Ironwood looked on with mixed emotions.
He could fall to his knees now and cry out in rage at the perpetrators of this atrocious act of terrorism….yet, he couldn't. He mustn't.
The Grimm would sense and hone into this place if he allowed emotions to best him. He needed to be strong, be the hero that Remnant needed.
Yet….how could he? He had no plan, no idea of how to rebuild two cities, especially Atlas, whose Dust and technological advances were needed to keep the Kingdoms placated and safe from the monsters hiding in the shadows of their ethereal mistress.
"General." one of the soldiers said while walking towards the man. "We have located nearly all the survivors."
"How many?"
"...less than two hundred, and that was for Mantleians."
"What about Atlasians?"
"...only fifty two." he said gravely, his tone sounding a little choked and forced. "And sir, we found the body of Doctor Polendina."
"...where?"
"Sir?"
"Where was the body?"
"In the ruins of his pharmacy, his body was covering…an android, well a prototype of it." the soldier said with a confused tone. "I think it was called PENNY or something but…he was shielding the body with his own. Died instantly from a broken spine."
"...don't touch it until all of the bodies have been found. Then prepare a mass grave for them all." He said while his eyes glazed again. "We will prepare them a memorial stone on the site, but do not touch the bodies beforehand, understood?"
"Um….yes sir?"
'I only hope this would help inspire hope to the survivors.' he thought before hearing the sound of shouts and cursing on his right, causing him to turn and face a large crowd of angry people, both from Atlas and Mantle, moving towards him with anger in their eyes. 'What the?'
"Traitor!"
"Murderer!"
"Tyrant!"
"You killed my family, you monster!"
"Faunus worshiper!"
"Anti human sympathizer!"
"Butcher of Atlas!"
Ironwood blinked in confusion before seeing the ring leader of this group walking besides the angry citizens. "Ms. Schnee. What is going on here?"
"This is an intervention." she said coyly while the crowd looked ready for a fight.
"Intervention? What are you talking about?"
"You really don't know?" she said with a smirk, moving her left hand into her coat's inner right pocket before taking out a white Scroll. "How unfortunate, looks like I have to jog your treacherous mind a little."
The man frowned before seeing the Scroll forming a 3D semi Hard Light construct of….a golden staff with a diamond shaped gem on the bottom and tip.
"Does this help refresh your memory, thief?"
"How-"
"It doesn't matter. The staff is safe and you, James Ironwood, have violated the trust of Atlas and Mantle for far too long." She said while some of the survivors began to pick up rocks, only for her to raise her left hand up, keeping them steady in the process. "To think, you've been lying to all of us for years, just to have legitimacy to the throne."
"What throne? What are you talking about!?" he yelled, his paranoia kicking in at the worst possible moment, given the Relic of Creation was now public knowledge.
"You know, the throne of Mantle's monarchy." she deadpanned. "The Staff of Mantle was a gift given to the King of Mantle after the Great War, given by the King of Vale as a sign of peace between them. And, looking at the lack of publicity and public knowledge of this sacred object, it means either it had been displaced or, in all likelihood, was stolen BY you."
"W-What!? I would never-"
"Thief!" yelled one of the survivors, a young goat faunus with a missing left arm. "You stole the staff and lied about the Gravity Dust!"
'How did they find out about THAT!?'
"Oh General." Weiss sighed while putting the Scroll away. "How you pulled the wool over our eyes for years, thinking that taking the staff and then using its aura siphoning abilities to power Atlas' anti gravity generators was a great idea. Brilliant even, but you didn't realize that it had a limit and THIS."
As the woman extended her arms outwards, the crowd seemed to become even more angry at the man, their eyes seemingly filled with long repressed anger and hate for his actions.
"Was it. The staff's powers failed, and you allowed this to happen." She frowned. "You allowed Atlas and her sister city to die, just to cover your own ass."
"Ms. Schnee. I would never allow such a thing to happen in my life, and even if I did that, WHY would I even do it!? There were several million people in those cities!"
"Because you were drunk with power. You have two seats on the council, power over the Huntsmen and military, had a stranglehold on the SDC and had ties with the greatest scientists on this planet. Yet, you wanted more and this disaster was all orchestrated for you to become king, and it all started with the staff." she said coldly while Ironwood started to see red. "You wanted the staff to legitimize your rule over the people, if they survived that is, and to keep suspicion off you, you came up with 'Gravity Dust generators' to placate them. A nice tactic if you were dealing with a moron, but I am a Schnee, I know Dust when I see it and flying in the air for years without a resupply of Gravity Dust, one of the rarest Dust crystals on the planet? That is hogwash. Simply hogwash from a paranoid tyrant wannabe."
"...you little. I would never-"
"Arrest him!"
"Kill him instead!"
"He destroyed our homes!"
"Murderer!"
Weiss raised her left hand upwards, silencing the group while Ironwood's soldiers moved towards the group. "Good men and women of the military, why do you follow a thief that would allow the destruction of your homes, your families, to be protected from righteous fury? He calls upon you for aid yet he allows robotic life to take your place when the time arises. He isn't worth the time and effort needed for loyalty."
The soldiers stared at the Schnee while the general moved his hand towards his pistol.
"Even now, when a peaceful revolution will be inevitable, he is willing to add more blood to this hallowed ground." she said while giving the soldiers a deadly glare. "Stand aside and let the people topple this man of tin before he destroys the last remains of Solitas' great legacy."
They looked at the woman before lowering their weapons, just as Ironwood felt the ground shake under his feet.
CLANK!
CLANK!
CLANK!
"General. You might have become a king of 'ruins', but you no longer have an army." Weiss chuckled as numerous massive yet slim white humanoid android-like mechs with circular shoulder guards and hip guards, a circular upper body with cyan blue lines on the upper chest, shoulders, and hips, a red 'Y' shaped visor, a semi insectoid head, long blade-like fingers attached to the triangular shaped hands, thin black skeletal metal strands and gears attached to the midsection like muscle fibers, four thin yet thick rectangular feet with triangular claws near the toe and heels, and had a white gear-like circle emblem with a single staff in it's center on it's upper left leg, landed all around the survivors, breaking the foundation with their weight as their visors glowed bright red. "However, I do. Meet the Grand Paladins, the ultimate force of good, all made by my anonymous benefactor."
Fisssss.
Fissss.
The tops of the mechs' backs opened up, revealing several golden human sized cockpits in the process as blue steam exited from the pressurized holes.
"People of Atlas, people of Mantle. Enter my Grand Paladins, pilot them against the General." she said while the survivors stared at the machines with mixed emotions. "Take matters into your own hands and strike down the parasite that destroyed your homes, your lives, and bring about a glorious revolution!"
'They can't seriously believe her lies, Ozpin gave the relic to my predecessor, yes, but the island was floating long before I was born.' Ironwood thought while feeling a little nervous. 'They would have to lose all sense of logic and common sense to follow her….oh no.'
And that was when he realized the most human thing that humanity had up its arsenal.
When humans lose everything and are pushed into a corner.
Clank.
Clank.
Clank.
They will lose themselves to their need to survive…..at any cost.
Zoooom.
As the mechanical giants, their pilots having scrambled into the cockpits, despite their own injuries, and sealed them shut, began to boot up, the Atlasian soldiers began to turn their weapons upon their former commander as Weiss smirks with glee.
"It looks like the people have spoken." Weiss said before pulling out her rapier and pointed it at Ironwood. "Fire when ready, and my good people, we will discuss the matter of leading government officials once I secure us a proper base of operations."
Click.
Click.
The mechs' clawed arms quickly shifted forms, transforming into massive triangular anti-personnel automatic cannons, as Weiss quickly lowered the rapier and turned around.
"FIRE!"
BAM!
BAM!
BAM!
BAM!
A rain of Dust bullets and plasma blasts consumed the figure known as Ironwood as the Schnee began walking away from the ensuing gunfire, her smile quickly forming into a twisted grin of excitement and happiness.
'One step in my plan complete, all I need now.' she thought as the screen faded to black. 'Is to finalize my ascension, my rise to Queen….no…Empress of all Solitas!'
BAM!
BAM!
BAM!
BAM!

Bio: In this timeline, the third child of the Schnee family, Whitley Schnee, never was born which caused Jacques Schnee to, after failing to get Winter Schnee to become invested in the SDC, pool all his time, resources and energy into Weiss' early development at the age of five. Through his rigorous training, Weiss gained the secret knowledge of the SDC, more control over the Dust trade networks, the perfect tutors to teach her all forms of combat, and, unintentionally, an insatiable ambition that rivaled even Jacques himself, causing her to think that she was always right and that no one, not even her father, could oppose her will. Thus, seeing the 'corruption' of the Atlasian government, decided to take over Atlas, but instead of using bribes like her father, she chose the path of absolute power and force. To do so, she hunted down the estranged Atlasian scientist Arthur Watts and financed his Atlasian Paladin-290 project in secret, asking only to improve upon the project itself by using her company's Dust mines and trade networks to get raw materials for a legion of robotic foot soldiers that were loyal only to her, dubbing them Grand Paladins. However, a legion of robotic warriors wouldn't be enough to acquire the 'Atlasian Throne', thus she took careful steps to acquire it, leading her to learn about the Relic of Creation and its location, via a bug in Ironwood's office, and, after killing Fira, the Winter Maiden, using a crystalized Fire Dust mixed with Cenitaur blood, that she acquired from one of her father's secret SDC laboratories, to cause the woman to experience spontaneous combustion in a bid to gain the powers of the Winter Maiden and successfully stole it, which allowed her access to the relic and caused the entire city of Atlas to collide with Mantle, destroying both cities in the process and killing thousands. This great disruption caused the survivors to question the Atlasian government and anyone associated with them, allowing Weiss, her army of Grand Paladins ready for deployment, to 'resolve' the situation by declaring that James Ironwood knew about the Relic of Creation, a sacred relic of the King of Mantle according to her, and that he created the lie of 'Gravity Dust' generators to keep the people from finding out his 'theft' and how he was now 'king' of a ruined Atlas due to his own paranoid mind. Calling for a revolution, she swayed the people with her lies and allowed them to kill Ironwood in cold blood, electing herself the new Empress of the United Atlas/Mantleian Kingdom as she uses her army to 'keep the peace'. Her goal fulfilled, she would be content for a while, before her ambitions changed from conquering Atlas to conquering the entire world, giving her the excuse to wage war against the other Kingdoms, planning to make everyone bow down before an Atlasian Empire. Oh, how the great and powerful rise and fall…all hail the empress.
