Rao her head was killing her. But for the most part this was turning out to be the most restful sleep she could remember having with such a killer hangover as Alex burrows deeper into the circle of warmth snuggled up along her back. The mixed flavors of leather, spiced vanilla and something akin to a puzzling yet tempting blend of scotch and leftover coffee ticked her nose.
"Are you always this snuggly after running away from a long time coming and deeply needed conversation, Danvers?"
And just like that Alex's warm happy bubble burst faster than a speeding bullet.
"Go away." The waking mother mewed with all the venom of a purring kitten as she rolled over in an honest attempt to get away from the husky voice seeming to also be waking from a much-needed rest.
"Happy to right after you open up for me."
Alex was about to force her eyes open when the cool touch of an ice chip wet her dry lips.
"Don't be like that it's just some chilled looking sporty drink someone thought to drop off when we were sleeping." Maggie huffed when Alex's lips remained pressed into a hard line, her eyes still closed though her posture was less relaxed than a few seconds before so the waking detective at least knew the other woman was aware enough to be annoyed with the current situation.
Not that Maggie had much say in it considering it was Alex herself holding the detective hostage at moment. The sneaky agent having maneuvered so close into the separating space Maggie had attempted to put between them before dozing off herself ending with the estranged pairing becoming as entangled as they could possibly get whilst still wearing their respective layers of clothes.
"We still need to talk Danvers," Maggie sighed. Untangling herself enough to roll toward the wall before sitting up completely letting her mismatched Batgirl and Flash logo sock clade feet hang off the edge of the bed. "There's so much you should know." She stood and stretched arms over her head, attempting to restart the blood flow after Alex's prolonged snuggle session. She released a tired groan despite how restful her sleep had been. "Please Alex, can we just talk about this." She tires one last time without looking over her shoulder.
"I know enough." Alex snaps back in answer as she rolled to the opposite side of the shared bed toward the doorway. She tried to stand but sank back to the edge of the bed when her knees start to buckle this time from fatigue despite how truly rested, she felt. Angrily Alex huffed as she grabbed another few ice cubes just for something to do other than glare at the wall or try not to watch Maggie's reflection in the glass wall opposite her. "And I'm straight," Alex growled, chomping hard on the ice as angry tears stung her eyes
"Could have fooled me." Maggie mumbled under her breath too low for the hung-over agent to dream of hearing her whilst also wondering if her comeback of "Well so is spaghetti until it's wet, Danvers." remark will get her a punch to the jaw given the trembling state of Alex's fists against her side.
"I like paskety." A child's voice interrupts as if he had heard the snarky comment passing through Maggie's mind making both women turn as one in the direction of the doorway. "Mama, can we make some for dinner?" the boy continues his eyes hopeful as they stare past Maggie towards the other woman in the medbay with her.
"RyRy." Alex sniffs the broken waver in her voice coming for an inertly different reason as she drops at once to her knees as the four-year-old races as fast as he was able into her already waiting arms.
"Mama." The boy echoes his arms locking gingerly around his mother's neck as he snuggles against her.
"How long have you both been standing there?" Maggie questions her eyes falling to the one she knew to be 'Major Lane' until she was grained first name privileges
"Long enough to tell you've still got it bad for one another." Lucy answered her arms still crossed loosely over her front now she didn't have Alex's kid against her hip to give the boy a better view of the strange woman taking a nap with his mama.
A light tugging on the sleeve of her shirt draws Maggie's attention from making any kind of "Yeah right" comeback at the knowing smile Lois Lane's little sister was giving her. Not that Maggie believed Major Lane would believe her if she said anything. Not even she would believe herself if she had.
"Hello." The young boy greets when Maggie's eyes find his own. "I'm Ryan." He tells her with a wide child's smile as he appraises her "Dats my Mama." He goes on pointing over his shoulder towards a now chuckling Alex.
"Hi, there, Ryan" Maggie echoes after an approving nod from Alex over the child's shoulder as Alex herself takes a few more ice chips to let dissolve on her tongue giving the other two time to at least greet one another before she intervenes.
"Are you a police lady?" the boy asks pointing to Maggie's badge resting on the side table along with the rest of her unloaded personal items Maggie hadn't exactly wanted to take a nap with. Her newly given NCPD badge, her service weapon, cell phone, the keys to her new apartment as well as her prized motorcycle.
"I am." Maggie nodes "Detective Maggie Sawyer newly transferred from GCPD." She introduces holding out her hand for a handshake.
But instead of the boy's following 'What's that mean, GCPD?' question as she'd expected Ryan's eyes go owl-like in awe with an excited "You were a detective in Gotham?"
Even Alex seemed surprised by her son's knowledge of the acronym.
"I have a friend from there. Or had I did have one." the boy amends then gives a clarifying "she moved a few days ago. Maybe you know each other?" Ryan wonders
"I might." Maggie agrees a little more hopeful at the 'she' rather than 'he' wording of the questioned comment the same time Alex is giving a questioning "Who do you in Gotham Ry?" of her own a few paces away from the detective and her (Alex's) young son. Her tone layer with motherly mistrust at the sudden insight into her son's more personal life.
"Can you tell me your friend's name?" Maggie probes for her considering Ryan's suddenly panicked expression at his mother's question.
"Detective D." Ryan answers matter of factly after a reassuring smile from his auntie Lucy. The younger Lane sibling stepped in to quiet Alex's continued "who the hell does he know from Gotham, Luc?" "Who's this so-called detective that's been talking to my son?" questions. "Why haven't any of you told me my son's been talking to some random stranger? Has Winn done a background search on their account? Have you?" the mother demands to know.
Lucy stopping the overprotective stream of questions with a flat "Stand down, Alexandra." That had even Maggie going still in awe at the other woman's commanding tone. Lucy's next words came far less threatening now Alex seemed to be too stunned to speak. "Like anyone in our family would let anything happen to your kid. Honestly, Danvers, you have got to relax."
"I don't know her real name." Ryan confesses in a whisper his eyes still on Maggie rather than his upset Mother, but the cop can see a sudden stab of pain growing in the young boy's expression. The upset crinkle she'd only seen so long ago when a then-teenaged Alex had been debating what drink flavor to get at the hockey rink concession. "My uncle Winn said I shouldn't tell computer people much about me cause they could use it to hurt me. Even my name so I haven't asked what hers is either."
"Wise advice." Maggie nods with a slight smile.
"Hey Ry?" Winn popped around the corner a tablet held aloft in his hands "Sorry to interrupt," Winn hurries on mostly due to Alex's mild glare over Lucy's shoulder as the hungover agent nursed more shaved ice as Ryan rubs a hand against his forehead with the heel of his hand with a soft groan as if he were on the tipping edge of a major headache of his own. "but uh you have a message, buddy. Looks important." The computer genus smiles "I know, I know I should have told you sooner, but Papa bear had me on another really super important project and well you know how crazy things can get around here." He defends now cradling his tablet like a shield at the cooled anger Lucy was watching him with on the other's behalf.
Ryan dropped Maggie's hand giving a departing. "Nice to meet you." Over his shoulder as he ran towards Winn for a forgiving hug only to stumble to a stop at the door to meet Maggie's eyes with a hopeful "you're coming over for paskety right Miss Maggie?"
"I'd be honored to, Ryan." Maggie smiles one of her full dimpled ones that has Alex's heart giving a fluttered flip in her chest to see outside of a picture or her own memories. "but shouldn't you ask your mama if it's alright with her, first kiddo?" Maggie reminds seeing Lucy and Winn both give an amused smirk out of the corner of her eye.
All eyes turn towards Alex then as the agent in question chews in agitation on a few more flavored ice chips.
"Please mama!" Ryan asks pulling out his best 'Danvers's puppy eyes'
"Fine." Alex gives in her words garbled thanks to the melting ice in her mouth as she meets her young son's gaze. "She can come"
This time Ryan's tackled hug was aimed once again at his mother. "Thanks, Mama." The boy grins giving a departing wave in Maggie's direction with a pleased "See you later Miss Sawyer."
Lucy quietly followed Ryan and Winn out of the room having spotted Eliza hovering close enough to see into the glass-walled room without those inside spotting her even if they had been paying enough attention to do so.
"So, this is the newest member of the Danvers clan huh?" Lucy chuckles greedily holding out her hands for the dozing puppy nestled against Eliza's shoulder.
"Hello to you too Lucy." Eliza huffs with a laugh as she passes over the napping puppy.
"Hey, Mama Bear." Lucy grins already pressing a few soft kisses to the puppy's head as she gives the chuckling mother beside her a one-arm hug considering her left was cradling a sleeping puppy.
The hug was cut short when a leather clade blur that was a hurried Maggie speed walks passed them pulling Eliza's attention. Or maybe it was the upset sniff the mother catches along with the fresh tear tracks she's spotted in the quick flash of Maggie's face as she passed.
"First Alex now you, huh?" Lucy jokes following Eliza's gaze to Maggie's retreating back. Maya wakes up with a tired yawn as Eliza gives a guilty "Seems so" before she jogs away to catch up with the fleeing cop as Lucy bends to set the squirming dog in her arms down on the floor.
The puppy shakes out her coat as she gives a curious sniff of the air as her head tips upwards giving Lucy a lopsided smile as only a puppy could manage.
"Keep that up and I'm stealing you, cutie." Lucy warns dropping to her knees to scratch the stretching pup behind her ears. Maya gave Lucy's fingers a playful nibbling with sharp puppy teeth with a few not so intimidating growls as she nuzzles against the kneeling woman's hand until her ears twitched as her attention was pulled back towards the opened door of the DEO med ward.
Lucy immediately follows the scrambling puppy one hand instinctively dropping to the nonexistent weapon at her hip whist has her cursing under her breath when her searching fingers only touch the elastic of her borrowed sweatpants having surrendered her weapon to her sulking girlfriend once Lucy had re-entered the DEO main hub.
"S…since when have we allowed…puppies?" Alex asks through her tears as Maya climbs rather deliberately into the upset agent's lap.
"You're in her snuggle zone, Danvers deal with it." Lucy laughs sliding down the wall to sit beside her upset friend as Maya makes it her mission to cover every part of Alex's face the pup could currently reach with comforting puppy kisses.
"Is she yours?" Alex asks obviously trying not to giggle at the adorableness of the wriggling puppy now rolled onto her back in Alex's lap in an attempt to have her stomach rubbed.
"Don't tempt me." Lucy chuckles reaching over to give Maya's offered stomach a few soft scratches only for the growing dog to immediately roll back to its paws with a warning bark as it presses closer against Alex's supporting arm.
"Hey, easy little one." Alex calms slipping easily into a soft Kryptonian wording at the sudden show of aggression. It was becoming second nature considering how often she finds herself needing it with her sisters. Linda in particular given her younger sister's quick temper. "Easy." Alex repeats as those mismatched green and brown eyes look up into her own. The trust she finds in them reminds her so much of the look her son had worn when she'd first laid eyes on him. "You're safe," Alex promised just as she had with Ryan that first meeting.
"So, what did Sawyer say that got you all water worky?" Lucy probes propping her arm on her bent knee getting a little more comfortable on the floor with her back pressed against the cool glass of the wall behind them.
"She didn't. This did." Alex defends holding up an aged-looking envelope. Her name and childhood home address were written plainly a crossed it's front. "she said she'd already found the right words about how she feels about me. About us a long time ago. Now it was my turn to see how I felt about her."
Lucy exhales a long breath "That's… that's sure something." She says not knowing how to handle the current shift in the mood around them as Maya continues her adorable attempt to use Alex's thumb for a chew toy. "What are you gonna do?"
"Have dinner with her and Ryan cause we've already agreed and he seemed so excited neither of us wants to hurt him by Mags not showing up." Alex sighed rubbing her puppy teething hand over her face with a tired sigh. "After that. I don't know." She sighed resting her head against Lucy's shoulder. "I just don't know."
