Killua has a couple of questions for Mikkel, mainly ideas he wants to be humoured, while Mikkel is testing a mechanism on the Yo-Yo, trying to perfect it.
The man was working on the piece that connected between the sides of the Yo-Yo, trying to build a winding mechanism. He was sure he looked strange right now, one clip in each hand, looking through a magnifying glass as tried to slot a small bar into the cylinder.
"Strange question…"
"Stranger than how I look right now…" the man's jaw was slacked, a permanent look of confusion.
"Have you ever built a Chocolate fountain?"
Mikkel's eyes flicked up, "Huh… I wasn't expecting that." He then looked back down, "Can't say I have, but if you to ask me to build one. I'd say no…"
Killua pouted.
"I can tell you're pouting. I'm a Metalsmith, not an engineer…" He paused for a moment so that he could slide the bar across, "You're going to need someone like Rosalia's wife. She's an engineer."
"Who…?"
"Sarah Servedio…" The small click told him he was done. Putting the clips down, he moved the magnifying glass out of the way, "She's actually, studied Electrical Engineering. I may be able to make the components… but I won't be able to make it heat up."
"Could you… make it…"
"No… Not without a design in place. Grab advice from her, get a general idea and I'll help you make one." He grabbed two sides of the Yo-Yo, locking the connection piece into one side. He then proceeded to hook the thread to a small hook before locking the other side of the Yo-Yo to the bar. Wrapping the wire around the rod, he then handed it to Killua "Give it a whirl…"
Killua flicked his wrist, watching the Yo-Yo slide down the string before locking in place, "How do I rewind it?"
"Like a car belt. For the moment, bounce it or tug at it then let go… otherwise, once it's gotten the finishing touches, it'll be a simple click." Killua did as he was told, pinching the string, he bounced it, the string winding back around the Yo-Yo till it hit his fingers. The force made him reel his hand back in surprise "Ouch…"
"That's the Ecriurium for you…"
"I assume you'll be making sure I won't be hurting myself every time I wind it back up?"
The man rolled his eyes at the boy's sarcasm, "Pass it here…"
The man pulled the string back slightly. Next, he produced a small ring with two clips on the outside. Wrapping the piece of string around the bottom of the ring, he curled it around it before pulling a small touch out of his desk and a thin piece of wire.
Adjusting the temperature on the dial, he brought both to the ring, melting drops of the wire to the ring. Putting the torch down, he inspected the ring, making sure it had completely solidified.
As a final test, to make sure everything was okay, he flicked the wire, causing the Yo-Yo to swing from side to side, "Try again…" He threw it to Killua.
Killua caught it with ease, slotting the ring around his finger. It fit nice and snuggly on his index finger. Grabbing the Yo-Yo, he threw it out, the thread unwinding before snapping in place, the Yo-Yo inches away from hitting the wall, he flicked his wrist, watching the Yo-Yo rewound as he kept his hand flat.
The Yo-Yo smacked the metal ring, the object suffering no visible damage. He repeated the process, always achieving the same result every time, "It works wonderfully…"
Mikkel smiled with a look of pride, "Glad you like it… now for the clip, it does nothing outstanding, for the moment. But it has three mode clicks. Towards the left, towards the right and double-tap. You can double-tap both sides for the same result. But with Rosalia's help, each function achieves a different result. Left extends the cable more than your original throw, while right pulls it towards you. Double-tap causes it to rewind."
"Nice…" Killua beamed brightly, "I can't wait to show Daniel the result." He rewound the Yo-Yo one last time before placing it on the desk, "One more to go I guess…"
Mikkel gave a nod, "Now, about that chocolate fountain… may I ask why…?"
"Because if I make one, Daniel promised to make me a chocolate lava fountain cake…"
"Uh-huh…" The man took in that information, "You must like chocolate… if you're going out of your way to make a chocolate fountain, for a chocolate cake."
"I once spent 200 million Jenny on ChocoRobo-Kuns… So, yes?"
The man slowly looked up, shocked from what he had heard "You spent…" He shook his head, dismissing the story entirely, "Nope. I don't want to hear that again. You're as bad as Vastorie, but he pisses his money away… you eat yours away…"
"I rather not be compared to a…" sexual deviant…? A pervert? Nah… I can fit those descriptions as well. I rather go the basic route "I rather not be compared to my partner's father. I'm no daddy…"
The man snorted, caught off guard by the boy's excuse for why he'd rather not be compared with Vastorie, "Noted…"
Mikkel worked in silence for a time, eventually completing the second Yo-Yo, "Alright, give the second a whirl, see how I went."
Killua flicked the Yo-Yo out, the weapon stopping at the same point as the first one he used. When he recalled the Yo-Yo back, it stopped like the other one. What exactly was stopping it from cracking the ring, breaking the very thing holding it together "So… how exactly does this ring work? So far, it doesn't crack under the combined force of Ecriurium and Nesceathuim. What exactly is stopping it?"
Mikkel offered the boy a sly smirk, "The easiest way is to combine that same force of two Ecriurium, which will cancel out each other. However, that wouldn't work given that it was combined with Nesceathuim, so, what's the next easiest way? What's a stronger material that takes impacts, without suffering from a reflective force or… a heavy impact?" He held out his hand.
Killua put the Yo-Yo back in the man's hand.
Smiling giddily, the man pulled the string back slightly, running his finger around the ring, "You'll notice if you had a keen eye for these types of things. This isn't a pure metal ring. Sure, the ring itself is made from Nesceathuim… But technically, Stone Rubber is wrapped around it. So, once it hits the ring, it bounces, rather than smacks it with the full force of the Ecriurium. Just make sure you let it hit the ring before you grab and swing it out again. The rubber will absorb the impact. However, if you try to catch it, your palm will take the brunt of the impact when it comes swinging back. So…"
The man slid the ring on one of his fingers, throwing it out. When the Yo-Yo recoiled, it hit the ring. Closing his hand around the Yo-Yo, he threw out the weapon again. He repeated the process, always pulling back his palm right after throwing out the weapon.
Throwing it out one more time, he smirked at the boy, "If you throw it hard enough, the speed build-up from the Ecriurium, will give any dumbass thinking of grabbing it mid-flight, an unwelcome surprise."
The man pulled out a thick piece of Rekril, placing it a little far from the wall. Grabbing the Yo-Yo, he threw it straight at the thick sheet of metal. Killua heard it, a loud clank from two metals colliding. When the Yo-Yo recoiled, he saw the large dint, the metal slightly caved in.
The boy whistled at the impact. This is thousands of times better than the original Yo-Yo I had…
Mikkel then removed the ring from his finger, handing the Yo-Yo back to Killua "I would make you try, but I'm scared of you damaging my workshop. But trust me when I say this; how the finished product turned out, I think it'll suit your intended goal. Although, I advise practising with it first, before thinking of using it against someone else."
Killua took the Yo-Yo, smiling giddily at the finished product he can't wait to show it off to Daniel.
"Also, it's not completely impervious. Two Ecriurium colliding with each other at the same speed, will cancel out the speed build-up strength. Although, as I said, if they're using only Ecriurium, theirs will shatter after the cancellation. However," The man's smile widened, "If you hit it at the right angle, you can cause it to speed up instead. Also, someone build to take impacts or are using things stronger than Rekril, will also be able to defend themselves. But like you saw with the thick plate, it'll still damage it, just not break through it."
"Also…" The man once more interrupted himself, "Time to test the final feature. Try using your ability on it."
Killua pinched his finger around the Yo-Yo, lighting up the object with his Nen ability. Sparks of electricity shot through the string, the specks of lightning flickered through the Deep Ocean Glass, aspects of the object glowing brightly.
Mikkel stuck his arms up, cheering loudly when it didn't circle back up the string of the weapon "It should work better now. Rather than circling constantly around the user and weapon, it now shoots like a bolt of lightning down to the core, the core being the Elengate which absorbs the impact. Then hitting objects with your Yo-Yo, it causes it to expel the charge. One thing you'll notice from this change, is you won't have to keep flooding the weapon with your aura…"
His expression shifted into a wide grin "The old Yo-Yo was designed like an electric fence… yours now, however, works more like a rechargeable stun gun now. Charge it whenever you like, with as much electricity as you want, without needing to flood it constantly through not only yourself, but the weapon as well. So, what you think?!"
"Look… I don't say this much… but thank you so fucken much! This shits over the ones my family got for me."
The man offered a smirk at the compliment, "I'm glad you like how it turned out. Just let Daniel know about what's happening with his weapons, and I should be done in the next few coming weeks. I'll finish off assembling the spear, then finish the handle on the whip, which I believe I figured out how to avoid Daniel getting shocked as well. I just need to reseat the rubber in the handle properly."
"Alright, I'll relay it to him. Are you going to reveal the finished product of his weapons together… or as individual pieces?"
"I don't mind, ask your partner how he'd like the reveal."
"I'll ask him then…" Killua shifted his posture, "After I show him the Yo-Yos first. He's been waiting to see them for a while." As the man chuckled to himself, Killua raised a point, "But I just wanted to say… we've been thankful for the things you've done for us."
The man gave a courteous nod, a small smile forming along his lips, "Try saying that after the weapons have been completed. If one of them breaks right at the end, I'll feel like shit…"
"If one of them is going to break, definitely going to be the whip."
Letting out an insufferable groan, he waved the boy off, pulling out one of his drills so he can get to work on the spear "Don't forget…"
"I won't…" Killua left through the door, heading up to see how Daniel's going.
"~"
Killua gave a knock on the door, peeking his head inside the room. Daniel was still at work, cutting grooves into the handle for the axe. When the boy looked up, he smiled at his partner, "So, how did it go?"
Killua's expression widened, "It's done!" He revealed the two Yo-Yos. His partner stopped working, coming closer to see the design he had kept hidden for so long. When he was close enough, Killua handed one of the Yo-Yo to his partner.
Daniel inspected the first Yo-Yo, taking note of the shimmering blue colour that twinkled under the light. It didn't overpower the image underneath it; it gave it a brilliant shine that accentuated the overall design.
What caught his eye, however, was what had been etched in. It was two expressive figures, one a wolf, the other a theatre mask. On the first side he inspected, the wolf showed signs of sadness, while the theatre mask looked concerned.
When he flipped to the other side, the expressions flipped. The theatre mask was now sad, while the wolf looked concerned. On closer inspection, the image made him realise something about the piece "Wait… it's us, as in your sister and I. It… It's a sad, yet beautiful idea. One looking out for the other, always caring for the other. Have you shown Alluka yet?"
"Not yet…" The boy took the Yo-Yo out of his partner's hand, to instead off the second piece, "I wanted to show you first because you'd appreciate it."
The same rules applied to the second one. This time, however, one was happy, while the other was acting cheekily, appearing almost mischievous. It was as though one had planned on teasing the other, but instead, they were smiling from the act "I love them…"
"That's not all…" Killua took the other Yo-Yo, showing off the features Mikkel had explained previously to him. But then he shifted the conversation, showing off some of the ideas the man had implemented.
He flicked out the Yo-Yo, letting it dangle down the string. Mikkel had made a small change, the image staying static, while the outer ring rotated ever so slowly, "One of the changes he made, was the outer ring. He mentioned that if I hit it at the right angle, I could cause it to spin faster, therefore, making the next attack more powerful. I must be careful, when returning it, as the speed build-up, adds to its strength, even on return. If anyone dares to try and catch it, it'll hurt them. It's such a small change… that ultimately makes it better than the original I got through my family. The ring abruptly ends the spinning feature. It'll bounce, causing the impact to go through the rubber, rather than if I were to catch it with my hand. I tried catching it earlier, and it hurts… not enough to leave a mark, maybe a bruise later. I could only imagine the damage it'll cause if I throw it around seriously."
"What else did he change?"
"The shimmering blue comes from the crushed Deep Ocean Glass. However, the Auzinite was built into the design, rather than coated over it. It made it more difficult to cut into it, so when I accidentally cut myself, that was why Mikkel suggested the Etching Blade, as you know."
"I know… but why these images?"
Killua awkwardly scratched the side of his face, blushing from the thought "Mikkel said to choose something I liked… I don't have a specific like just love. Thinking about it, I guess I could've drawn an image of ChocoRobo-Kun, but I'm glad I didn't. I like how it turned out… It just… fits."
The boy found himself looking at one of the weapons with a small smile "I like to think of it as having Alluka and you by my side, the three of us as one… or together, technically. Two Yo-Yos and I equals three. But the more important matter is it won't be limited to one piece. It's not Alluka designated to one Yo-Yo and you on the other, with me using one at a time… which ultimately means, I'll always be picking one of you first."
Killua shifted his stance, his grip tightening "Look… I'd hate to force you to share the same expression within the same space, both being sad at the same time would've felt not only horrible, not right. I know you, not only love Alluka as though she was your sister, she has come to understand and love you like you were her brother too; it wasn't just me anymore. I'm a little jealous at the prospect, that you have found a way to wedge yourself into this family dynamic. I'd always believe it just be us two, Alluka and myself, eventually. But Gon changed that… then you, changed it again. So, like our new dynamic… I needed to alternate them. One will always be trying to comfort the other, much like we already do… which lead to the final product." I'm breaking character… acting like someone new, unknown to myself. But the more I let myself go, to go with the flow… the less I see these thoughts as strangers inhabiting my mind, and as memories, I've just learned to be comfortable with…
He found himself holding up the Yo-Yo, fingers grasping the final product "I wanted to think like my partner would, to romanticize the design choice. I knew you'd like it… and for me, it'll just you know…" The boy's eye met his partner's, "it'll fit perfectly."
There was a moment of unspoken silence between them, the words mainly sinking into Daniel's entire being. It felt more like a clock ticking loudly behind them, the world moving on without them. But in their eyes, it was something completely different. Everything outside of their bubble had now become pointless.
The bond they have will be shared with Alluka, not in a manner where they'll be explicit with the girl, but rather it needed to be more open and loving with the younger girl.
Killua needs to have that brotherly relationship with her, to not only be protective but more open to the idea, that even though Alluka has or requests conflicting ideals from him… he'll be receptive to changes in their relationship.
Much like his partner, Daniel will also need to change slightly. It won't be about making Killua happy, it's about making sure Alluka was also happy, not that he already does that. But he'd need to think more about her, not just because of his relationship with her brother.
Daniel pulled his partner into a tight hug, one hand resting against the boy's back, while the other held his head. He planted small kisses on his boyfriend's neck, repeating how thankful he was to be in this type of relationship.
Killua slowly brought his hands to his partner, placing them in the same spot as Daniel had. But the one on his lover's back moved up and down, coaxing the boy into an unstoppable smile.
Neither one was ready to move, but given what happened during their act of intimacy, and what was happening now, Killua understood the sense of competency. It was like how when every single piece of the jigsaw that was placed down, not only fit in place, but the image it was presenting was making more sense with every fragment.
Something happened that day that made him less scared of their future outcome.
The bond had grown to a new height. Choices that Daniel made now made more sense to him due to their latest discovery. The fear, the appeal, needs, love and understanding all lead to one point.
Provided that they were prepared to do this together, they'll get through it… in one breath.
