August 1st 20xx

A young trainer, around my age, came out of the shrubbery to our left with an excited look on his face. He was a bit shorter than I was, maybe about as short as May was. His ginger hair hung messily over his freckled face. His arms were covered in scratches and he looked like he had been out in the woods since this morning. His shoes were dirty and leaves clung to his baggy pants. Three Pokeballs hung off of his deep red belt and a fourth one was clutched between his thin fingers.

"Woah! Cool Ralts, dude! You have got to battle me!" The trainer stepped closer and leaned toward Elizabeth, trying to get a better look.

"How did you get one? I thought you could only find them near Petalburg!" His bright green eyes were fixed on Elizabeth. "Can I touch it?"

I took an exaggerated step backward, trying to reclaim what little of my personal space this guy had left me with.

"Woah, man calms down," I requested with my arms raised. "I found her near Oldale, and I don't know about the touching part, she is a bit shy around people." I tried my best to sound nonchalant and respectful.

"Can I…take a picture of it?" He asked somewhat more politely. "I'm Mitch, by the way. My friends are huge Gardevoir fans, they are never gonna believe me…unless I take a picture."

"Gardevoir? Is that what you're gonna evolve into, Elizabeth?" I looked at her with my brow raised. She nervously looked back and forth between Mitch and me and then shrugged.

"Tell you what, since you want to battle and take a picture of my…Ralts, how about this." I crossed my arms, trying to look cool. "If you beat me, you can take a selfie with her."

"Oh, it is so on, dude!" Mitch squealed excitedly and held out his fist.

It took me a second to realize he was asking for a fist bump. I awkwardly obliged.

We both took a couple of steps back, leaving plenty of space between us for a proper battle.

"How many Pokemon do you have?" Mitch asked, staring at my nearly empty belt.

"Just two, my Mudkip and Eli…I mean my Ralts," I pointed at the little darling on my shoulder.

"Is it cool if I fight your two with my four?" He pointed at his belt. "I really want that picture," Mitch laughed awkwardly.

Normally I wouldn't have agreed to such unfair terms. This was going to be my first-ever Pokemon battle. Sure I played a lot of Pokemon video games, like the one about the Enigma Chamber, the Sigma Jewel version of that old handheld game, and tons of others. By all means, I should've been nervous and sweating like crazy, but I felt none of that. I felt confident. Nay, I was oozing with it. My heart began to pump excitedly as I felt a rush slowly building within my core, spreading through my body, setting it ablaze!

"You better make that six, pipsqueak!" I declared and reached for Tide's ball.

"You're on…tall…pants! I'm sorry, I'm not good at insults," Mitch retorted. "Go! Sweaddle!"

"Sewaddle?" I was taken aback by the unfamiliar name.

A small yellow and green bug Pokemon appeared in front of me. It looked like a leafy caterpillar of some sort. I was convinced Wurmple was the only bug Pokemon in the area. Then again, I did hear from my father that more and more non-native Pokemon had been appearing on the archipelago lately. Perhaps this was one of them.

I didn't even have to give the command, Elizabeth had hopped down from my shoulder and stood before the Sewaddle.

"Woah, uhm okay…Elizabeth! Blast that thing!" I ordered.

Elizabeth looked over her shoulder, and though her bangs were covering her eyes, I'm certain she had an eyebrow raised. Mitch also stared at me bewildered.

"I'm sorry…" I said sheepishly. "I don't know her attacks yet."

"Ralts, Ra," Elizabeth waved off my comment and cracked her fingers.

A powerful gust of wind slammed into the Sewaddle, sending it tumbling back toward Mitch. It rolled back to its belly and shook itself off. The psychic blast didn't do a lot of damage, but it shook Its confidence. The little bug was trembling in its leaf coat.

"Don't be scared, Sewaddle!" Mitch tried comforting it. "Use Bug bite!"

It scuttled towards Elizabeth. but before it could even close half the distance, it was blasted away by another burst of psychic energy. Had it not been for the pink glow surrounding Elizabeth, one would've thought a mini typhoon had smacked that caterpillar away. This time it did not get up.

"Woah! I don't know what that was, but I like it!" I cheered and pointed my Pokedex at Elizabeth.

The dex scanned Elizabeth and after a few seconds of loading and static, it finally brought up the move she had just performed.

"Confusion! Nice! Now I know what to call out!" I declared excitedly and pocketed my Pokedex.

"Alright, bring out the next one!" I boasted.

"Okay, THAT is a pretty tough Ralts," Mitch stated after withdrawing his downed Sewaddle. "But I know how to deal with psychic types."

"What, your friends gave you a trainer's guide to hunting 'Gardevoirs' or something?" I scoffed and straightened my posture.

"Go! Poochyena!"

Elizabeth took a step back and raised her arms defensively. She must've been aware of the weakness her species had against dark-type Pokemon. The small black shuck growled as it stared down its opponent. The hairs on its back rose and its eyes locked with Elizabeth. Elizabeth looked surprised and lowered her arms. The Poochyena growled, taking even such a subtle movement as a threat.

"Mitch, is your Poochyena okay? It looks…mad…" I started hesitantly.

"I…I don't know, it never reacted like this. It only ever snarls like this when it's around bigger Pokemon, like my brother's Mightyena and Bisharp," He replied.

"Use…Tide," Elizabeth's words echoed in my mind. "This one…sees," She added.

Though usually hyped about Elizabeth's ever-increasing telepathic prowess, this request unsettled me. I've always felt safe around her, but right now I was beginning to feel queasy. Perhaps I slept wrong when I saw out of the lake. I couldn't put my finger on it.

My hand was already on Tide's ball by the time I fully processed her request. As if my body was following someone else's orders.

"Alright, Elizabeth, I'm switching you out," I said nervously.

She hesitated for a second but then turned her attention toward me. Her expression was soft and sweet, almost as if she was aloof. This quickly made the knot in my stomach untwist and with it, my confidence returned. She floated backward and stood by my leg as I prepared to switch her out.

"I hope you're not still sleeping in there! Come on out, TIde!"

"Mudkip!" Tide yelped and hopped in front of me.

Mitch's Poochyena glanced at Elizabeth standing next to me before setting its eyes on its next opponent.

"That's one big Mudkip," Mitch pointed at TIde. "What do you feed it?"

"Mu? Mumumu? MUDKIP!" Tide cried out furiously.

Underneath all that laziness and unending hunger was the unmistakable shine of pride. True, Tide was on the larger side, but no one would say it to his face. Well, they could, but they wouldn't get away with it.

"Mud! Mud! MUDKIP!"

"Big mistake, Mitch! Tide, water gun!" I exclaimed.

In all honesty, I wouldn't have even needed to order the attack. He looked as if he was going to explode any minute!

A powerful jet of water sent the snarling pooch toppling backward. Tide immediately rushed forward and slammed into it, knocking the Poochyena to its side. The black shuck rolled a few feet but then quickly got back on its feet.

"Our turn! Pocchyena, Bite!" Mitch countered.

The Poochyena shook its head and ran towards Tide with a ferocious howl.

"Tide, blast it again!" I barely got the words out by the time Mitch's Pokemon crossed the distance.

It leaped at Tide, ready to bite down on his head, but Tide was quicker. He blasted the ground with a quick burst of water that flung him backward, just enough to stay out of reach. The Poochynea landed face first on the now muddy terrain. The moment TIde landed, he shot forward and slammed his head into the Poochyena's noggin with a loud thunk. That little mutt went out like a light.

"Woah…" Mitch sighed and recalled his Poochyena. "What do you feed that Mudkip?"

"A lot." I gave a snarky reply.

Tide yipped victoriously and trotted back to my feet. He sat down and eyed Mitch, still clearly upset about being called out.

"Sheesh, sorry little dude," Mitch apologized.

Tide huffed and turned away. He must've picked that up from Elizabeth. I've only known her for a few days, but I managed to find out several different ways to push her buttons. She gets flustered easily, most often she just blushes and turns away, but she can become rather 'huffy' at times.

"Alright, Mitch. Third time's the charm?" I quipped and crossed my arms.

Mitch's confidence was probably nearing the earth's core by now. He was looking directly at the spot where his Poochyena had been knocked out. I'm guessing he gambled his chances of beating me with that, but Elizabeth was smart enough to tag out. Or scared enough. Maybe she knew dark types held an advantage over psychic types. She didn't like the way it was looking at her. Even while Tide was smacking it around, I could feel a mixture of malice and unease oozing out of her, and coating my spine in its cold, contemptuous embrace.

"Look man, you can give up now and we can call it a day," I egged him on, seeing he was contemplating the same thing.

His expression went from anxious to frustrated. He glanced at Elizabeth and then at the remaining Pokeballs on his dirty belt. He must've wanted that picture. I kinda felt bad for him. In all honesty, I would've let him take a picture with her before we even started, but I couldn't tell him that. Not when I had already asserted how cool I was. Plus…Elizabeth was watching.

"How 'bout this? You play one more Pokemon and I'll give you two free turns without counter-attacking," The offer sounded less cool once I said it out loud. I was starting to feel really bad. I didn't want to continue stomping his self-respect into the ground.

"Well alright, not very traditional, but you're on…" Mitch hesitated.

"Eric Pitt…" I said my name. He was so focused on getting that picture of Elizabeth that he didn't even ask my name before picking a fight with me.

"You are so on, Eric Pitt!" Mitch reached for another Pokeball.

"You know, I was pretty lucky to catch this one after everything that happened in Oldale town."

"What happened in Oldale town?" I had no idea what he was on about, I was just there a few days ago and everything was fine.

"What you haven't heard?" Mitch lowered his arm, eager to explain this Oldale mystery. Honestly, I think he was just happy to talk to another human being.

"Some of the rangers found an entire pack of Zigzagoons dead!"

My arm began to itch at the mention of those snappy little Pokemon.

"Not even eaten, just dead! Decimated! Some were crushed under trees, others were mangled beyond recognition! Only three from that pack remained alive, but one of them had an injured spine." Mitch explained with gruesome detail. "Pretty scary, huh?"

"That's terrifying!" I exclaimed.

I could feel my stomach turning in fear at the grim fate that befell these poor creatures.

"I was in those woods like three days ago! Hell, I was attacked by three Zigzagoon!"

"Woah are you serious?!" Mitch's eyes lit up with excitement.

"Did you see what did that to them? Was it those weirdos in red and blue pajamas that have been popping up lately?"

"No, but I saw trees rattling and big bursts of wind rushing through the woods. That's how I found Elizabeth!" I explained and pointed to the little fairy by my feet.

"Do you think it was chasing your Ralts too?" Mitch eyed her intensely.

Elizabeth hid behind my leg.

"No, it was the Zigzagoon that was chasing her. Pretty sure they were gonna eat her if I didn't intervene." I replied.

"Woah!" He gasped. "No wonder she is so attached to you."

Mitch stared at the Pokeball in his hand.

"Do you think she would be up to fighting a Zigzagoon?" He asked sheepishly.

His confidence was long gone. I'm certain he was trying to hype up his Zigzagoon by telling the Oldale ordeal, but knowing that Elizabeth had a harrowing experience with that kind of Pokemon shook him quite a bit.

"What do you think, Elizabeth? Do you think you can fight a Zigzagoon?" I knelt down to ask her.

She stared at me silently, contemplating her answer, then she looked at Mitch. He raised his hand in a friendly gesture. I think he was trying to make the situation less tense.

"Yes…I fight," She finally replied. "I fight…with you!" She turned to Mitch pointing.

"What the hell?!" Mitch grabbed the sides of his head.

I've gotten pretty used to Elizabeth's presence in my mind. I no longer saw it as an intrusion. Sometimes I still felt her poking around in there, but all it did was make my head all tingly. As if she was massaging my brain. A weird image for sure, but it was more comfortable than you'd think.

"I heard a voice in my head!? I heard a girl's voice in my head!" Mitch continued to freak out. "Wait! No way, NO FREAKING WAY!"

'Here we go…' I thought to myself.

"Dude! Your Pokemon just talked! She talked! And she sounded so cute!"

Elizabeth lowered her arm and look at me confused.

"It's not like I played it cool the first time you talked to me," I retorted. "Mitch!"

"Yeah?" He snapped his attention to me.

"We gonna battle or what?" I scooped up Tide so Elizabeth wouldn't have to worry about him while fighting.

"Right! Yeah, Yeah! I am so getting that picture!" He was so excited, I thought he was gonna pass out at any moment.

"Go Zigzagoon!"

The familiar brown and cream-colored shape plopped out in front of us.

"Za-Goon!" It barked and locked its eyes on Elizabeth.

I could tell she was tense. Her tiny soft hands were clenched into fists and her posture was rigid. Her shoulders rose rhythmically as her breathing picked up.

"You ready, Elizabeth?" I asked in an uncertain tone.

No answer.

"Alright, Zigzagoon! We have two free turns, let's not waste them!" Mitch called out.

"Tackle attack!"

The little ferret Pokemon charged forward with surprising speed, but it was suddenly halted in its tracks. It winced and refused to move as if its legs were bolted to the ground. A cold unfamiliar pain erupted in my mind. I gasped and grasped the sides of my head. It felt as if an Icicle had pierced my skill and stapped into my brain. My psychic connection to Elizabeth was severed in a swift, and cruel motion.

"Raltsss…" Elizabeth whispered callously.

"What? Uh…Uh, try it again, Zigzaoon!" His bold expression quickly faded into one of concern.

The Zigzagoon tried to move, it barked and yelped and tried to twist itself free from the ground, but nothing it did could make its legs budge. It locked eyes with Elizabeth and began to whine. It didn't even try to act tough and bark at her, it just whined and trembled in pure, primal terror.

"Alts," She stated.

Elizabeth unclenched her right hand and rose it to point at the Zigzagoon, still frozen in place. The air around her began to shift and dance. Her dress began to flow from the pressure she was creating. Dust kicked up and pebbles rolled as if the ground itself tried to escape her presence.

"Uh, dude! I don't like this, make it stop!" Mitch requested.

"Dude, we give up! Make your Ralts stop!"

"Elizabeth, enough!" I demanded and stepped forward.

She snapped her head towards me. Elizabeth stared at me for a few seconds, I could see her small chest rise and fall rapidly as if she had just run a mile. Her expression softened and she relaxed her arms. The Zigzagoon was finally able to move again and it hurried back to its owner. Mitch picked it up, but it was still trembling.

"You did good, take a rest okay?" He quietly comforted his Pokemon.

Tide was squirming uncomfortably on my shoulder, so I let him hop back down on the ground. He was looking at Elizabeth with an expression I hadn't seen him wear once. Concern.

"Mudkip, mud!" He yipped at me.

I could once again feel Elizabeth's presence in my mind. It felt different. I could still tell it was her presence, but it felt…forced. It is hard to describe. I could feel that same warm tingly feeling envelop my brain, starting at the back of my head and then spreading all over my cranium. You know when someone you care about is faking a smile? You can still tell it's a smile, and it can be just as warm and loving as the real deal…but you know it's forced. It was like that. Something was not right with her.

"He said…he wants to go…back in his ball…" Her words sounded jumbled.

She wasn't very good at English. To be fair, she had been learning it by browsing the contents of my mind for the past two or so days. But…

"Hey man, you good?" Mitch hollered.

"You've been staring at the ground for like a full minute…"

"What?" I snapped out of my stupor and looked at him.

"Oh sorry, I think I zoned out for a bit," I scratched the back of my head and averted my gaze.

"Hey, where's Tide?" I looked around confused.

"On your belt, dude. You put him there?" Mitch explained and walked closer. "You sure you're okay? It's pretty hot out here on the main route, you been drinking enough?"

"Yes…Yes, I think so," I replied and looked at my belt.

Sure enough, Tide's ball was right there.

"You still want that picture?" I broke the awkward silence.

Mitch contemplated for a second, clearly shaken up by our battle.

"Your Ralts is a little freaky, but she's pretty cute." Mitch squat down and took a closer look. "May I take a picture with you?"

He was weirdly polite, but in all fairness this whole afternoon was weird.

Elizabeth nodded and began to float. She was hovering just below eye level and looked at Mitch with a patient smile.

"Awesome!" Mitch quickly retrieved his phone from the back pocket of his dirty cargo pants. "Get in here, dude!"

I shifted closer, framing the picture so that Elizabeth would be the centerpiece.

"Done! Thanks, dude!" Mitch took my hand and shook it graciously.

I looked at Elizabeth and smiled at her softly, making sure to mentally thank her for her patience. Mitch looked at his phone and stared at the image with his brows furrowed.

"Something wrong?" I raised an eyebrow, expecting him to request a few more pictures to REALLY show off to his Gardevoir enthusiast friends.

"I think the lighting may have been off or something…" He stated in a dull tone. "But it is great. I thank you for this…picture…"

Mitch silently pocketed his phone and began walking toward the Forest with a blank expression on his face. This didn't feel right. He was ecstatic to be seen in the same picture as a Ralts, just moments ago, and now he was just walking away looking like he just witnessed the most mundane thing in the world. I turned my attention back towards Elizabeth. She was floating right next to me, bobbing up and down as she tried to maintain her current elevation. She noticed I was staring at her and turned to face me as well.

"Is Eric okay?" Elizabeth wondered sweetly. "Did…Elizabeth do something? Did…I…do something…wrong?"

"No…No, I was just…" I fumbled with my words, trying to piece together everything that just happened. "I uh…never mind. That was weird, but then again I guess this is part of the adventure too," I gestured to where Mitch headed off.

"It is…okay? Can we adventure together…more?" Elizabeth asked meekly and floated closer, fidgeting with her fingers.

I snickered and rolled my eyes.

"You are so totally weird, you know that?" I poked her stomach playfully.

"Weird…as in bad?" She grabbed my finger and stared up at me with those deep vermillion eyes.

I could feel my heart skip a beat at the innocence of this sweet girl…Pokemon.

"I like weird. Weird is good," I explained and helped her back on my shoulder with my other hand.

"Weird…is good," Elizabeth whispered to herself as we began to walk toward Petalburg. "Eric…likes weird,"

"Eric likes Elizabeth," I corrected her, having overheard her quiet monologue.

Elizabeth began to fidget, feeling embarrassed about being called out. I could feel different emotions oozing out of her and into me. Surprise, embarrassment, and excitement pooled out of her in a colorful torrent of emotions. My heart was racing and my cheeks flushed as a familiar warmth began to wrap itself around my body, caressing my heart and mind.

"Elizabeth…likes you too…" She leaned against my face, lightly scraping my temple with her horn. "I…I stay with you…and Eric…you stay with me…"

I leaned my head against hers, welcoming her affectionate display. The relentless summer heat no longer seemed so harsh, and neither did the terrain I walked on. Everything felt just right. Just as it should be. Elizabeth and I continued our journey, knowing that no matter what we may face, we'll face it as it should be…together.

Author's note:

You are probably thinking "Hey where the hell was chapter 7? It's the 28th, not the 15th! :(" Yeah. Sorry, things have been a little hectic lately. I took part in the Inktober challenge and I was way too preoccupied with that to write this month's chapter. Also, there was university stuff, work, and writing my own ACTUAL book (Which will hit the shelves in early 2025).

I'm sorry I kinda blipped without warning. It wasn't my intention. Eric and Elizabeth is still dear to my heart, but it's no longer my only priority like it were in 2019-2021. I've got a lot on my plate and a lot of adulting to do. I'm using this series to become a better author, that's why I always ask for feedback. But it's no longer the only thing I write, so while I do want to maintain a regular upload schedule, you should expect some blips and blops along the way.

Thank you for your understanding!

And leave a review on what you think of the series so far and how I could improve!

Love you guys!

Ps: Next time, if I can't make it on time, I'll leave a note at the bottom of the Author's notes section!

(2022-11-17) - Hey guys! I don't think I can make it this month, I have never been more preoccupied in my entire life. The grind is real! Only got one full day a week to myself and I am usually too tired to do anything by then. Hope you can understand!
