A/N: Here's another chapter and I'm glad to say I'm only a day late in posting it. That's progress people. Well, anyway, I hope you like it and do let me know what you think.
Enjoy ^^
Hermione admitted she had thought about avoiding Remus. However, she didn't do it. It would lead to too many stares, too many questions, too many complications and she couldn't have that. So she tried to act like usual, like nothing had changed.
Remus, however, wouldn't let her get away with it so easily.
Part of their group were in the library studying together. They had been there for some time and some of them, such as James, Peter, Sirius and Marlene had left already, tired of looking at the pages in front of them.
Remus stood up, saying he needed another book. On his way back to his seat, however, he dropped a small piece of paper in front of Hermione. One sentence: 'We need to talk'. She looked at him and saw that he was watching her. She nodded, almost unnoticeable.
Hermione didn't know how much time had passed. It could have been half an hour or it could have been two hours, she wouldn't be able to tell. Eventually though, Lily and Alice put away their stuff and told them they were heading back to Gryffindor Tower. "You coming with us?" Lily asked.
"No, I want to finish this," Hermione said , pointing towards the book that was lying in front of her.
"Remus?"
"I'm with Hermione. I'll head back when I finish this."
"Okay, but don't overwork yourselves."
"We won't." And with that the two witches left and Hermione was left behind with Remus. It was silent. He kept looking at her and she let out a sigh. "What do you know?" she asked him.
"A few things. Though I have a feeling that I don't know enough."
"Not here," she told him and started to grab her things. He looked at her for a moment before she said, "Room of requirement." If she needed to talk about this with him then at least it would be somewhere where no one would be able to hear them.
The brunette cut straight to the chase, not beating around the bush. She wanted to know where she stood, what he knew and she wanted this conversation to be over with.
"So what did you hear yesterday?"
"The entire conversation." He was honest, had no reason to lie. He knew she knew he had been listening in. "The only thing I don't understand is why you're giving memories to Dumbledore."
"I can tell you later. What did Dumbledore tell you?" Before he could answer, she added, "It's very important to not leave out anything. I need to know exactly what he told you."
"He told me about the Order, told me he wanted me to join when we leave Hogwarts." Hermione's eyes widened. Technically she knew this would happen, knew they had all been in the Order. Yet, a part of her had thought – or better said hoped – that maybe Dumbledore wouldn't do so this time around, knowing how things would play out.
"He wants you to join?"
He nodded. "And he told me that you're also joining after graduation."
"Also? So you've already made your decision?"
"I did."
"But –"
"Don't try to change my mind because it won't work. Besides, seeing as you're also joining, it would make you look like a hypocrite. Or am I wrong?"
Remus was right. She could try to talk him out of it but she knew him well enough to know that it would be futile. Once he made up his mind there was no changing it. Stubborn. The lot of them, every single marauder.
"So he told you all about the Order?"
"He did."
"Then what else do you need to know? I'm sure everything's been said that needed to be said."
"I need for you to tell me the truth. I know you've been hiding something ever since you came here, I just can't figure out what it is. However, I think it's something to do with those memories you're giving to Dumbledore. So why are you giving memories to him? What are you hiding?"
He didn't look at her like he was accusing her or like he distrusted her. No, the look he was giving her was more like he was concerned, imploring. He was concerned for her, worried.
Hermione sighed. She didn't know how much she could tell him, if she could tell him anything. Then again, it was her call to make, right? And this timeline was now also hers, she couldn't go back home. She had to stay here.
The brunette dragged a hand through her hair. Should she tell him? The entire truth or only some parts? Would he even believe her if she told him? Would he freak out? No, this was Remus they were talking about. He would use his brain, analyse everything logically. He might be surprised but he wouldn't freak out.
But then there was still one more thing. Would he keep quiet about this to his best friends? She couldn't risk more people finding out, it would only complicate everything.
Some sort of desperate groan passed her lips. Hermione looked him in the eyes and told him, "What I'm about to tell you cannot leave this room. No one can know about this, not even Sirius or James or anyone. Is that clear?"
He appraised her, taking in her appearance, her tone of voice, the look in her eyes. She was as serious as he had ever seen her. He just nodded, "I promise that nothing of what you're about to say will leave this room." The least he could do was assure her that her trust in him wasn't misguided.
Another deep breath and then, "I'm from the future."
She looked at him, silence filling the room. She saw the transitions on his face as if she was reading a book: disbelief, the puzzle pieces starting to fit together, realization, understanding.
"You're from the future," he told her. It wasn't a question, it was a statement. She nodded. It took a moment but then came the questions. "How? Why are you here?"
She answered everything to the best of her abilities, telling about what a threat Voldemort was in the future, the battles she had been fighting since first year. However, she didn't tell him everything.
She didn't tell him how Peter betrayed the Potters, didn't tell him that James and Lily and countless of others would die, didn't tell him that Sirius would go to Azkaban, didn't tell him that Harry was James and Lily's son. She only told him the things that would justify her being here and helping the Order. Nothing more. She couldn't risk everything being out in the open, she just couldn't.
"So you got here while a battle was going on and you can't go back?" She nodded. "And you're giving Dumbledore memories so that that information can help the Order fight Voldemort now?" Once again she nodded. "And all the things that don't fit, Fred and George, you staying in the castle, you finding this room, is because you're from the future?"
"It is."
After a moment to let it all sink in, he pulled her in a hug. "Oh, Hermione, how did you last as long as you did without telling anyone?"
She hugged him back, grateful for the comfort he offered. "I didn't have much of a choice, did I?" Pulling back she said, "Remus, remember what you promised me. You absolutely can't tell anyone anything about this."
"I know. I won't."
They stayed there for a while, letting it all sink in, talking. It seemed like something clicked then. "Did you know I was a werewolf because you knew me in the future?"
She nodded. "To be fair, I did manage to figure it out on my own though."
"So the werewolf friend you were talking about –"
"Was you, yes."
"Was that also how you knew that James and Lily would get together?" Now he was looking at her with a teasing-like mischievous look in his eyes and an amused smirk on his lips.
"Maybe." He gave her a look. "Okay, yes." He just let out a laugh, head thrown back and everything. He knew what he had just been told was the truth, that it was real but even so, it still seemed a little unbelievable.
By the time they entered the common room it was almost deserted, only their friends and a few sixth years still awake.
"Where have you been?" James asked as they both of them took a seat.
"Studying in the library, didn't Lily tell you?"
"Hermione, I told you not to overwork. Studying until almost midnight is exactly that, overworking. The same goes for you Remus."
"Calm down, Lily. We just wanted to make sure we covered everything we had to," Remus replied as he sent a look Hermione's way.
"Well I'm glad you're back. I need my daily dose of cuddles." As he said it, Sirius almost pulled her into his lap, burying his head in her neck, taking in her scent. Hermione knew how sweet Sirius could be but at times it still surprised just how soft he could be, especially after all the stories she had heard about how big of a flirt he had been. She liked this version of him much better.
"Sometimes you really remind me of a dog. The only difference is that now that I know everything, every sign is so much easier to categorize as dog behaviour," the redhead told him matter-of-factly.
"Say what you want, Evans," he told her without any bite, not having called her that in a long time. "I don't care. I just need my Mione cuddles."
Hermione let out a chuckle, relaxing a little. It had been a rough day and the thought of cuddling up with Sirius didn't sound so bad. On the contrary, it sounded very, very good. So that's exactly what she did, ignoring all the comments that came their way.
