Chapter 33: Shroud of Mystery, Pt 2
"Wow…there's so much history," David said, as they were curled up together on the couch, reading the large tome.
"I know...I remember learning about some of it when I was being tutored as a Princess, but I found it so boring," Snow replied. He smiled.
"Let me guess...you were more interested in being in the garden with the flowers and animals?" he asked. She grinned.
"You know me so well," she replied, as she pecked him on the lips.
"My tutor always got frustrated with me, because she said it was unbecoming of a Princess to dig in the dirt and cavort with wildlife. But my mother was always in her garden...I guess it made me feel close to her," Snow recalled. He kissed her hair.
"I'm sorry you lost her so young," he replied.
"Thanks...but you were younger than me when you lost your father," she said.
"Yeah...but he wasn't much of a father. He was drunk in most of the memories I have or too busy tending to the farm to have much time for me," he replied, as he sighed.
"I wanted to be different with Emma...I promised I would be," he said sadly.
"And you would have been…" she assured him.
"I know you would have been wonderful with her...you are wonderful with her now," she added.
"I don't know…" he said.
"Well, I do. When we first started talking about having kids...it was never your skills as a parent that I worried about. It was mine. I always knew you'd be great at it," she replied.
"And you would have been too...and you are to her as well. You were there as a friend to her when she needed one the most," he said.
"And now...she's finally letting us in slowly. As her parents. You said she would come around and you were right," she replied, as they shared a tender kiss. The timer went off and he took their dinner out of the oven. Snow brought the book over to the table and they ate together, while she still skimmed the contents of the book. As they were finishing, David started making cocoa when Snow called him back to the table.
"David…" she said, as he returned to the table.
"What is it? Did you find something?" he asked.
"These are my grandparents, King William and Queen Katherine. I never knew them and they died before I was born," she replied.
"And this is your mother...but who is this woman?" he asked.
"This can't be…" Snow said.
"Princess Narcissa...first heir to the Throne. Your mother had an older sister?" he asked.
"No!" she exclaimed.
"I mean...not that I was ever told. This is completely new to me! I've never seen this portrait. The one I've seen is just my mother and my grandparents," Snow said.
"Looks like Gold was right...she was erased," he said, as he turned the page and there was a full sized portrait of Queen Narcissa, who was identical to Narcissa Blake.
"This is her...Narcissa Blake," he said.
"My Aunt…" Snow realized.
"Does it say what happened to her?" she asked. He shook his head and turned the page.
"No...just that there was a merger of the Kingdoms after your mother married your father," he said, as the next page was a portrait of Leopold and Eva together.
"I don't understand...why would my mother never tell me she had a sister?" Snow asked.
"Well...it must have bad enough to find a way to erase it from history…" he answered.
"I...I just don't understand how she ended up in the Land Without Magic," Snow said.
"Me either...and it's not in the book. We should probably go tell Gold," he replied, as he made the call.
Solana worked late that night, preparing for Emma's arrangement in the morning and she sighed, as she pushed back from her desk.
"Oh, I know you didn't do this, honey and I can't for the life of me figure out how that woman got free," she said, as she stood up and looked out the window. The clock was moving now and she recalled the moment that her memories had been inadvertently returned to her.
Flashback
"And I told you that if you go through with your little lawsuit against my client, I'll litigate you into the poor house!" Solana shouted into her phone, as she stopped on the street.
"Mmhmm...that's what I thought. You send those papers to my office," she said, as she hung up the phone and noticed the sign for the new dress shop.
"Oh...it's about time this town got a decent dress shop. Maybe I can stop sending away to New York for my pantsuits," she said, as she peered in the window and dropped her phone.
"Oh hell…" she cursed, as she bent down to pick it up, but not before she got a whiff of the pink poppies that were growing up through the cracks in the sidewalk. That's when it all came rushing back to her.
She shook her head at the memory. She had freaked out a little after that and when she started going around town asking questions, it must have gotten to the wrong person, because one trip to get a drink at the Rabbit Hole in order to figure out her next move almost landed her in the mental ward. It was a bit of a blur after that. With all her memories coming back, she had gotten drunk and when she was drunk, she was even louder and more outspoken than when she was sober. And that was saying something.
Then Snow or Mary Margaret had come along and rescued her from Nurse Ratched putting her in a room with rubber walls. She had almost wept at seeing the young woman that she had watched from afar. She wanted nothing more than to be Snow's fairy Godmother, but was forced out of the role. Then she was forced to watch Blue muck up everything, put her in danger, and then betray her in the end.
But that wasn't the only problem. Somehow, Queen Narcissa had gotten free and outside the curse. And now she was here, for revenge, Merryweather was sure.
She knew the two Queens were likely behind the murder in order to frame Emma and ultimately hurt Snow deeply.
"You are not going to hurt my little Snow this time...and Blue can't stop me from stepping in this time," she murmured, as she went back to work with determination.
Emma was dozing off that night in her cell when she heard footsteps. She opened her eyes and saw August standing there.
"How the hell did you get in here?" she asked, knowing that Neal had locked up for David when he left with Henry. August smirked.
"I have my ways," he said.
"Yeah...well, you're lucky that you're out there and I'm in here, because I owe you a punch in your big, lying nose," she replied. He smirked.
"So you believe…" he said.
"And I would deserve that punch," he admitted.
"You think?" Emma asked hotly. He pulled a chair out and sat down in front of her cell, as she noticed him grimace in pain.
"What's with your leg?" she asked. He smirked and pulled his pant leg up and she saw that it was wooden. Her eyes widened.
"You can see it...you really do believe now," August said.
"Uh yeah...I guess," she replied.
"And yet the curse isn't broken yet," he said, with a disappointed tone. She rolled her eyes.
"Sorry to disappoint...but I don't know how the hell to break it. Trust me, I would if I could, because I think it would get me out of this jail cell," she said.
"Yeah...the Queen must be scared if she cooked up this kind of plan to get rid of you," August replied.
"Why are you here?" she asked.
"I guess I thought we should finally talk...and I should apologize. It was my father that lied to your parents. I took your mother's place in the wardrobe and then I abandoned you in the group home when I was supposed to stay with you," he replied.
"You were a kid...he shouldn't have put that on you," she admitted.
"But yeah...all the other stuff you did after that was pretty crappy," she added. He nodded.
"You're right...coming between you and Neal was a really crappy thing to do. I just got scared that you'd never find this place and break the curse," he said.
"Yeah...so I hear," Emma said.
"I know your parents, Emma...they're going to get you out of here, no matter what," August replied, as he stood up.
"Weren't you just a kid then?" she asked curiously.
"I was...but I remember them well and you might think that it was childhood idolization, but they both live up to their heroics. They beat Regina...the Evil Queen and managed to ensure she couldn't hurt them in that world any longer. They were preparing for you. I remember helping out in the nursery," he replied.
"She couldn't hurt them in that world…" Emma said.
"So she found a way to bring them to another one," he replied, as he stood up.
"Tell me everything you know...and I mean everything," Emma said.
"I know that Tamara wasn't who she seemed," August replied. Her eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"I mean that I ran into her in Hong Kong a few years back," he replied.
"Hong Kong?" Emma asked, with a furrowed brow. He nodded.
"She was there looking for a man called the Dragon, just like I was," he explained.
"The Dragon?" she asked, with a raised eyebrow.
"Word all over Hong Kong was that he could give you a miracle cure for any ailment. For the right price, of course," he replied. She rolled her eyes.
"Of course," she said.
"So...Tamara was looking for a cure for something?" Emma questioned.
"No...but I was. This was before I knew you were my only hope, but I didn't have the money. She did," August replied. Her eyes widened.
"So...not only do you lie, but you steal too?" she asked. He looked at her.
"That's rich coming from you," he said.
"Sounds like if it hadn't been for you mucking things up, I would have had my parents," she countered. He smirked.
"Touché," he said.
"So...you stole her money?" she asked. He nodded.
"Yep...and I got the cure. It was the real deal too. Not sure who this man really is or if he came from our land, but his magic is real," he replied.
"Then how come your leg is still like that?" she questioned.
"Because she caught up to me and stole the potion back. I kept tabs on her and a few days later, she went back to the old man," he explained.
"And?" she asked.
"She confronted him about it...she said that she had it tested and none of the substances in it were anything recognizable from this world," he replied.
"So?" she asked.
"So she declared that it was magic, which was unholy and stated that it had to be destroyed, along with him," he replied. Her eyes widened.
"She killed him?" he asked. He nodded.
"Stabbed him...and thought he was dead. But he wasn't...guess he really is magical," she replied. Emma shook her head.
"I'm sorry...but what does all of this have to do with anything?" she asked.
"Everything Emma. Tamara hated magic and she was out to destroy it. Being with Neal...that wasn't an accident. She was playing him the whole time to find this place," he replied.
"And destroy it?" Emma asked.
"It and everyone along with it and she wasn't working alone," August replied.
"Then who else was she working with?" Emma asked.
"I don't know...I never met anyone else in her circle, but now that she's gone, others may come looking for her," August replied, as he got up.
"What about Narcissa Blake? Do you think she has a part in this?" Emma asked.
"She may have," David said, as he and Snow appeared there, along with Mr. Gold and Neal.
"Uh...looks like I should be going," August said, as he attempted to walk out, but David stopped him with a hand to his shoulder.
"Sit down Pinocchio," he ordered with a stern look. August reversed course and took a seat, all while feeling Neal's glare shooting through him.
"What's going on?" Emma asked.
"We're not sure...but we think we know who Narcissa Blake really is," David replied.
"Who?" Emma asked. Snow looked at her.
"My Aunt," she replied.
