Thank you so much for all of the reviews on the last chapter, reading all of your comments makes me smile so much. I am so glad you are all still enjoying these prompts.
This prompt was requested by Duck. This involves Emily and Arthur from my story The Second Time Round (just in case anyone is confused). Thank you so much for requesting, I really hope you all enjoy.
Several years ago, Sheldon never saw himself settling into family life. Although he knew that having children with Amy was something he wanted, he wasn't sure he would take well to fatherhood and the traditional family life. However, the little family that he and Amy had created were now his whole world, he felt a fierce love that he never thought was possible to feel and an overwhelming need to protect and look after them.
Now, after busy day at work they were the first people he wanted to see, the only people that could put a smile on his face. His family home was his little haven, his security blanket and tonight was no different. Pushing the front door open, it was music to his ears to hear Amy and Arthur laughing in the kitchen at the end of the hallway.
"Oh look daddy's home" Amy looked up and smiled at her husband as he appeared in the doorway.
"Hi daddy" the two year old looked up momentarily from the mixing bowl and waved his hand towards Sheldon. The kitchen looked slightly chaotic, mixing bowls, spoons and various ingredients were laid out. Cake mixture and flour were splashed around the kitchen surfaces and up the walls making Sheldon twitch at the mess however, Amy remained completely calm and in control.
"What's going on here?" Sheldon asked making his way over to Arthur who was stood up on his small stool so that he could reach the kitchen surface.
"We're baking a cake, aren't we" Amy spoke enthusiastically, ruffling Arthur's hair.
"It's for my birthday" Arthur turned to tell Sheldon, wobbling a little and very slightly loosing his balance.
"Please be careful" Sheldon warned placing his hand on his little boys shoulders in order to steady him. "Amy are you sure this thing is safe?" he asked in hushed tones. His children were his world and if he had it his way he would have them wrapped in bubble wrap twenty four hours a day in order to keep them safe. Amy was almost at the opposite end of the scale, of course she worried but she was more than happy for them to climb and explore, she always told Sheldon it helped build character.
"It's fine" she waved her hand in his direction. "Hey, what did I say, no more cake mixture" she told Arthur as she saw him dip his spoon into the cake batter for what must have been the tenth time.
"But I like it" he pouted, his lips puckered and his eyes narrowed. In that moment he was his mother's double.
"I know you like it but you can't go filling up on cake batter before dinner" Arthur huffed in response as Amy tidied up around him.
"Where's Em?" Sheldon asked, opening the fridge and pulling out a bottle of water. His daughter always made her presence known when he returned home from work, she was quite the daddy's girl and always wanted to fill him in on her day.
"Upstairs, cleaning her room" Amy replied, as she continued to clean and supervise Arthur with the cake batter. Sometimes, when Amy was in the zone like this, Sheldon often found that he would get in the way and more often than not it was best just to leave her to it. He figured he could maybe help by going to seek out Emily.
—
When he reached the top of the stairs, he could see Emily's bedroom door was wide open however, the little seven year old couldn't be seen. Often, she would be sat at her little desk doing her homework but as Sheldon crept closer, he could see that she was busy tiding, placing her dolls into one particular box.
"Hi" Sheldon spoke as he appeared in the doorway, leaning against it. She turned quickly to face him, her little plaits swinging in the process.
"Hi" she mumbled. There was something not quite right, Sheldon knew it. Normally, she would be so bubbly and excitable, he couldn't be sure but she seemed a little off.
"Can I come in?" he asked still hovering in the doorway, her back was to him now as she continued to tidy away her dolls. With a nod from Emily, Sheldon made his way into his little girls room and took a seat on the edge of her bed, with its fluffy blankets and pillows her bed always seemed so plush and soft. "What's wrong?" he asked nudging her gently in the back with his foot.
"Mumma always make me tidy my room" she mumbled.
"And that's why you're in a huff?" Sheldon asked. In the past seven years, the little girl before him had taught him so much. Never really one to notice people's feeling or emotions, Emily had totally changed that, made him become more intuitive simply because he cared how she was feeling. The thought of her being sad about something broke him and her happiness gave him a whole overwhelming emotion that he never knew it was possible to feel.
"She makes me do it all that time" she sighed, placing the lid on her box of dolls.
"Well, maybe you shouldn't be so messy" he was joking but as Emily looked at him with her bright blue eyes, he could see she didn't find him funny. "Arthur's messy and she never makes him tidy up" she huffed.
The past two years had been life changing for everyone. Sheldon and Amy adjusting to life with two children was hard work but it was times like this where they underestimated the affect it had on Emily. She loved her brother so much and was an amazing big sister but she really was just only seven and still little herself.
"Emily, Arthur is two. He's just a baby" Sheldon tried to reason with her. He had now moved and was sitting down on the floor next to her. Scanning the room, he realised that even if Emily wasn't keen on tidying she had done a pretty great job, he felt rather proud. "Believe it or not, you were that small once" he draped his arms around her, half expecting her to shrug him off but instead, to his surprised she simply flopped into his side, her head falling against chest.
It had been five years since Emily was as small as Arthur, since she was this tiny little person that amazed him everything single day. She still did amaze him. He couldn't believe how much she had grown, how quickly time had passed.
"We did everything for just like we do for Arthur" he explained. Emily gave a defeated sigh, almost as if she was telling her father she knew he was right. "I guess when you grow up, you have to start doing more things."
"I don't like growing up daddy" she muttered sadly. It was in that moment that a thought suddenly dawned upon him, an idea that would subsequently benefit them both.
"I think I might have an idea"
—
"I need to talk to you about something" Sheldon started to broach his idea with Amy that evening in bed. With dinner, cleaning the kitchen, bathing the kids and putting them to bed there had barely been a moment for them to speak to one another.
"I already don't like the sound of this" Amy spoke as she turned the page of her book, not lifting her gaze from its content.
"I haven't even told you what it is it yet?"
"I know" Amy said as she closed her book and placed it on her nightstand, she turned on her side to face Sheldon, her elbow propped up with her head resting on her hand. "There's just something in your tone" she smiled up at her husband who wasn't aware of the tone he adopted when he wanted something.
"How do you feel about giving Emily pocket money?" he asked. "You know for doing chores and little jobs around the house."
"Sheldon, she's a seven year old that has everything. What would she spend money on?" Amy asked.
"I don't know" he shrugged. "Missy and I used to just go to our local store, she'd buy sweets and I comic books" he explained. Amy smiled as her husband recalled a fond childhood memory, being an only child and with parents that were a little unconventional, she couldn't relate to his experience however, found it all adorable.
"That's sweet" she smiled, already coming round to the idea. "I guess it would give her an incentive wouldn't it?" she knew how grown up it would make Emily feel to receive a little bit of money.
"Exactly, and it doesn't have to be a lot. Just a dollar here and there" Sheldon added. He was just about raise another point with Amy however, his wife was one step ahead when she saw the small smile on his lips and the glint in his eye.
"You want to make a contract, don't you?" she sighed, rolling her eyes. There had been various moments throughout their relationship where a contract had come into play, since Emily had been born Amy had almost been waiting for the day he started writing contracts with her.
"Can I ?" he asked like an excited child.
"Would it really make you happy?"
"More than anything" he beamed. As Amy nodded her head, Sheldon couldn't recall a time he'd been more excited. For him, creating a contract with his child was just the epitome of sheer delight.
—
"So I get money for doing chores?" Emily asked as she sat at the kitchen table with her father the next morning. Sheldon had read the contract (which he had woken up extra early for in order to construct) to Emily however, the majority of it had gone straight over her head.
"Yes" Sheldon nodded. "It says it right here in section A" he explained pointing with his pen to where it was outlined. "Does all of this sound okay?"
"Yeah" Emily nodded with a smile.
With a smile as wide as his whole face, Sheldon signed the contract on the dotted line at the bottom of the page. Once finished, he pushed the piece of paper across the table to Emily.
"If you sign there" Sheldon told her, pointing to the line opposite his own signature.
"I don't know how to do that" she replied. At just seven years old, she was yet to adopt a signature of her own.
"Just write your name" he proudly watched her as she took hold of the pen and neatly wrote her full name in her best handwriting. Despite her age, she was a beautiful writer.
Mimicking her fathers previous move, Emily scooted the paper back across the table to her father. Their first contract, the first of many more to come was finalised.
Thank you so much for reading. As always comments are always welcome and so appreciated.
