Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for the reviews on the last chapter. I feel like I need to apologise to the guest who requested this prompt as I feel it's taken me ages to get this up.
I really loved writing this one and thought it was such a good idea and a little different yet also totally on topic to what I normally write! I hope it's all okay for you.
Enjoy reading!
Amy wanted a baby. It really was as simple as that. She wanted a baby with every fibre of her being, there was a need and longing inside of her for a tiny little person to call her own. All of her friends had babies and children of their own, now it was her turn and she really didn't think she would be able to shake that feeling until she was holding her beautiful son or daughter in her arms.
Oddly, it had been Sheldon who had first broached the subject about trying for a baby. Amy never asked but she knew that Penny giving birth to her son, Lucas had definitely stirred up some kind of emotion in him, some desire to be a father that had suddenly been awoken. Of course, she jumped at the chance. She always thought she had simply been waiting for the right time but in that moment, she realised what she had been waiting for was Sheldon to want this just as much as she did.
Everything in their lives was micro managed, routine and structure was how Sheldon Cooper very much lived his life but for this, for the most life changing, scary and amazing journey they would ever go on, they had opted for the relaxed and casual approach. Amy didn't want the pressure, she didn't want to lose those intimate moments with Sheldon and replace them with simply making a baby. Amy had stopped taking her birth control but that aside they had decided to let the rest play out.
"Do you think we should start taking all of this a little bit more seriously?" Amy asked over breakfast as she nursed her cup of tea in her hands, the mug held close to her as if it's warmth was bringing her comfort. Sheldon had known she was deep in thought, the way her eyes were narrowed and her brow was furrowed often meant she was mulling something over.
Even after all these years, at times she was still a total mystery to him and this morning was one of those times. He waited a while before responding, his brain desperately trying to help him out before he finally asked "take what more seriously?"
"Trying for a baby" she placed her mug down on the kitchen counter, the ceramic making quite the clatter against the surface. It had been four months since the tiny packs of pills had been thrown away and still Amy was no closer to achieving her dream of being a mother than she was on that very day.
Little did Sheldon know that Amy had secretly been taking tests, once a month or sometimes even more than that, just when she felt a little different, a part of her dared to hope that she was finally pregnant but instead she was met with the word 'negative.' No baby. It was a strange emotion, to suddenly miss and hanker after something that was never even there in the first place and yet Amy felt that pain every single time she took a test.
"I thought you were happy with how things were going" he nibbled a corner of his toast. Amy had never once given him any reason to doubt that she wanted to do things differently or maybe she had and he had simply just missed the signs. He still did that a lot.
"I am" she shrugged, he continued to look at her like she wasn't making any sense. "Well, I guess I'm not. Not really." She could feel the tears stinging her eyes and she willed them to disappear, this whole baby thing clearly meant more to her than even she realised. "It's been four months Sheldon. Four months and there still isn't a baby." She sighed loud and heavy, like she had the whole weight of the world on her shoulders.
"But I thought you said you didn't want to put pressure on us" he would have quite happily obliged to a schedule but for once he let Amy take the lead with this.
"I know, but that was then" her hands reached out for the tea again, like she needed the comfort. Unusually for her, she knew she was being impatient, making a baby was not an instant thing and she knew that maybe they just needed a little more time but also, maybe they could do just a little more to make it happen sooner. "I guess we could try doing things a little differently" she felt nervous to even broach the subject.
"Okay, like what?" he asked, turning to place his buttery plate in the sink.
"Tracking my cycle. Making sure that we make the effort to actually try when I'm ovulating and at my peak fertility," she explained, that was the sensible, logical place to start. Sheldon opened his mouth to speak but Amy beat him to it. "I know what you're going to say, that I didn't want it be like this. That I didn't want it to become a case of just making a baby but I'm not saying that we only have to have sex when I'm ovulating we can still try at other times too, it'll just be good to know when we're really at our best."
"Okay, that makes sense" Sheldon nodded. Despite Amy only broaching the subject now, he knew she had been thinking this through for a while and although it wasn't completely strictly scheduled, he did relish in the opportunity to adhere to a routine even in intimate moments with his wife.
"And…" she took a sip of her tea as she mulled over the next thing she was about to say. "I don't know how you'll feel about this one but we could…well…we could try some different positions" her cheeks flushed pink as she said those words, even though he was her husband and she really could tell him anything, she always found it tricky discussing anything that took place in the bedroom.
Sheldon coughed and spluttered out his tea, maybe Amy should have waited until he had stopped drinking before she landed this on him. He coughed again and hit his chest before finally pulling himself together. "Different positions?" he asked, voice rising in pitch. Their sex life had always been fairly basic, always great but they were never very adventurous.
"Yeah" she nodded, a small smirk danced on her lips, amused by his reaction. "I was researching last night and there's some position that are supposed to be really effective for conceiving" she had no idea whether these would work but at this point, she was willing to try anything.
"We could try that" Sheldon nodded. He walked round the kitchen island and stood before Amy. "I know this means a lot to you, I don't mind what we do to make it happen" he smiled, "within reason, obviously," her heart melted for a brief moment. This Sheldon before her was a completely changed man when compared to the guy that she met in the coffee shop all those years ago.
"It means a lot to you too though right?" she asked, suddenly feeling nervous that this was just for her benefit. She reached up and placed her hands on his shoulders.
"Yeah of course, it does" looking into his blue eyes, she found herself falling deeper in love with him. It was always the case whenever they spoke about potentially having a baby or becoming a family. Something about the topic of conversation made Amy turn to mush, she couldn't wait to watch him become a father, she couldn't wait to witness the first time he laid eyes on or held their son or daughter. She knew, he would be incredible.
—
It was two weeks later when after observing some cell from a brain she had just dissected, Amy got a notification from an app on her phone. It from the fertility tracking app that she had uploaded as soon as she had finished her conversation with Sheldon all those weeks ago.
Seeing that now, right now, was the best time to try felt like an early Christmas present. It also felt like too much of an opportunity to pass up on so with her heart racing a little, she peeled off her gloves and removed her lab coat and made her way across the campus to find her husband.
Gently, she tapped her knuckle against his door however, she was too eager to wait for him to tell her to come in. She was a little worried that he would already be at lunch but as she carefully opened the door, she saw him stood in front of his whiteboard. There was something about him already that made her heart go all a flutter, she loved that after all these years he still did that to her or maybe it was just because she knew that they were potentially about to make a baby.
"Hi" she smiled. It took all the will power in the world to stop herself from throwing herself at him.
"Hey" he stepped back from the whiteboard, observing his work. Amy knew from the way his head was titled just slightly to the left, from the way his fingers were holding his chin and from how deep in concentration his eyes were that he was still very much in work mode. She wouldn't have been surprised if he hadn't even twigged on yet that the little 'hi' she let out was actually from her. "Something doesn't look right here but I can't put my finger on what. Does it look okay to you?" he asked, finally turning his attention to her.
"Mmm sure" she nodded her head quickly, Sheldon's work was the last thing on her mind right now. "Guess what" she saddled closer to him, a playful look in her eyes and a goofy smile on her face.
"What?" he asked
"I'm ovulating" Sheldon wasn't sure he'd ever seen her look happier. "Well, I'm three days away which means that right now I'm at my most fertile" she didn't wait for a response. Instead, she rose up on to her tiptoes and kissed him, long and hard. For a moment, Sheldon responded, moving his lips in time with hers, before suddenly releasing where he was and what he was doing.
"Amy, Amy" he managed to speak in between breaths as he kissed her. "Amy, what's going on?" he placed his hand on her shoulders and monetarily was able to back away.
"We need to have sex" she told him rather bluntly, she even surprised herself.
"But we're at work. We're in my office" he gestured to the space around her, he knew that trying during this point in Amy's cycle was important but he didn't think she would ever suggest something like this at work.
"I know but we'll probably only have time for a few times tonight…"
"A few times?" he wasn't sure he had enough stamina for any more than one session tonight. How hard was Amy going to work him? How tired was he going to be after all of this? Nobody had told him that making a baby was such a tiring process.
"Yeah" she nodded. "Over the next few days we need to try as many times as we can" she explained. She grabbed his shirt and pulled him close to her, kissing his lips yet again.
"You make it sound so romantic" he muttered against her lips. He didn't back away this time. He could already feel her hands tugging at his shirt, her fingers working quickly to unbutton it.
"You need to take your pants off" she told him, as she removed his shirt and began kissing his neck, peppering his skin with wet kisses. Everything was so desperate and urgent so different to how they normally did this kind of thing.
"Where are we supposed to do it?" he asked, hastily fiddling with his belt buckle. The clang of the metal somehow seeming louder than ever. They both surveyed the scene, he was half expecting it to dawn on Amy what they were actually doing and for her to suddenly back down but that never happened.
"I don't know" Amy shrugged. "Here" she nodded in the direction of his desk. She'd never had sex on a desk before, that was only something she'd ever seen in Hollywood movies. Glancing quickly between Sheldon and his desk, she took her hand and swiped a few objects onto the floor, clearing space for them. It was no way near as swift and smooth as she had seen in the movies, if anything it was a little clumsy and heavy handed. "I've always wanted to do that" she laughed before Sheldon's lips were suddenly on hers.
—
"I can't believe we just did that" Amy sighed breathlessly from where she sat on the edge of his desk, her skirt that just moments ago was bunched up to her waist now smoothed beneath her. She ran her hands through her hair, desperate to make it look a little neater than it felt before she went back out into the hallway.
Buttoning up his shirt, Sheldon glanced at the door before turning back to Amy all wide eyed. "We didn't lock the door" he couldn't believe they had been so reckless and caught up in the moment. "Amy, anyone could have walked in," what if president Siebert walked in, they could lose their jobs. What if Leonard or any one of the guys walked in, he would never live this down.
Amy laughed at how much of a state he seemed to be getting himself into. "Nobody would have walked in. We'd have known" he was stood between her legs, a few buttons still undone on his shirt, chest still visible. Amy could have easily gone for round two there and then. "I hope we made a baby" she smiled, pecking his lips.
"If we did, do we have to tell her that she was conceived on my desk" Amy's heart skipped a little beat at the use of the word 'she', did he picture their future with a little girl or was it just a slip of the tongue.
"We don't have to tell her where she was conceived at all" Amy replied. "Actually, with that in mind, maybe we should just stick to the bedroom"
